- 0:11Hello, friends, it's Shaun here. It's Tuesday, it's the 19th of
- 0:16August, and it's great to have your company as we continue
- 0:19reading through this fascinating story in the book of Acts.
- 0:23And you will hear again and again when the apostles get
- 0:27pulled in front of a crowd or pulled into a very scary hall
- 0:31with all sorts of cranky Sadducees and Pharisees staring
- 0:34down at them, and they are asked to describe what they're doing
- 0:38and why they're doing it. They give these speeches not
- 0:41just about Jesus, but they give these speeches that start with
- 0:44the patriarchs and talk through the faith of the Israelite
- 0:48people and then present Jesus as the logical next step in this
- 0:54journey with God. Because they're trying to
- 0:56convince them that Jesus and what he brings is not some new
- 1:00flesh in the pan, but this is the same God.
- 1:03This is the the promises foretold long ago coming good in
- 1:08the person of Jesus. So this is not a new religion.
- 1:11They say this is your religion. This is the age old religion of
- 1:15God walking with his people. And this Jesus is their God.
- 1:19So next time they start at the very beginning, you can go, ah,
- 1:22that's why they're doing it. So let us put down whatever it
- 1:26is that's gurgling away in the back of our minds.
- 1:30Come before our God to hear His words to us.
- 1:37Let's do it. Let's read together Acts chapter
- 1:394. While Peter and John were
- 1:50speaking to the people, they were confronted by the priests,
- 1:54the captain of the temple guard and some of the Sadducees.
- 1:57These leaders were very disturbed that Peter and John
- 2:00were teaching the people that through Jesus there is a
- 2:03resurrection of the dead. They arrested them and since it
- 2:07was already evening, put them in gaol until morning.
- 2:11But many of the people who heard their message believed it so The
- 2:14number of men who believed now totalled about 5000.
- 2:19The next day the council of all the rulers and elders and
- 2:23teachers of religious law met in Jerusalem.
- 2:26Anas, the high priest was there, along with Caiaphas, John
- 2:30Alexander and other relatives of the high priest.
- 2:34They brought in the two disciples and demanded By what
- 2:38power or in whose name have you done this?
- 2:42Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers and
- 2:47elders of our people, are we being questioned to day because
- 2:51we've done a good deed for a crippled man?
- 2:54Do you want to know how he was healed?
- 2:56Let me clearly state to all of you and to all the people of
- 3:00Israel that he was healed by the powerful name of Jesus Christ,
- 3:06the Nazarene, the man you crucified, but whom God raised
- 3:10from the dead. For Jesus is the one referred to
- 3:14in the scriptures where it says the stone that you builders
- 3:18rejected has now become the cornerstone.
- 3:22There is salvation in no one else.
- 3:25God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be
- 3:30saved. The members of the Council were
- 3:33amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for
- 3:37they could see they were ordinary men with no special
- 3:39training in the Scriptures. They also recognised them as men
- 3:43who had been with Jesus. But since they could see the man
- 3:47who had been healed standing right there among them, there
- 3:50was nothing the Council could say.
- 3:52So they ordered Peter and John out of the council chamber and
- 3:56conferred among themselves. What should we do about these
- 4:00men? They asked each other.
- 4:02We can't deny that they have performed the miraculous sign
- 4:05and everybody in Jerusalem knows about it.
- 4:08But to keep them from spreading their propaganda any further, we
- 4:12must warn them not to speak to anyone in Jesus name again.
- 4:17So they called the apostles back in and commanded them never
- 4:21again to speak or teach in the name of Jesus.
- 4:25But Peter and John replied, Do you think God wants us to obey
- 4:29you rather than Him? We cannot stop telling about
- 4:34everything we have seen and heard.
- 4:36The council then threatened them further, but they finally let
- 4:41them go because they didn't know how to punish them without
- 4:43starting a riot. For everyone was praising God
- 4:47for this miraculous sign, the healing of a man who had been
- 4:51lame for more than 40 years. As soon as they were freed,
- 4:56Peter and John returned to the other believers and told them
- 4:59what the leading priests and elders had said.
- 5:01When they heard the report, all the believers lifted their
- 5:04voices together in prayer to God.
- 5:07O sovereign God, Creator of heaven and earth, the sea and
- 5:12everything in them. You spoke long ago by the Holy
- 5:15Spirit through our ancestor David, your servant, saying, why
- 5:21were the nations so angry? Why did they waste their time
- 5:24with futile plans? The kings of the earth prepared
- 5:28for battle. The rule is gathered together
- 5:31against the Lord and against His Messiah.
- 5:35In fact, this has happened here in this very city, for Herod
- 5:41Antipas, Pontius Pilate, the governor, and Gentiles, and the
- 5:45people of Israel were all united against Jesus, Your holy
- 5:49servant, whom you anointed. But everything they did was
- 5:53determined beforehand according to your will.
- 5:58And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your
- 6:02servants, great boldness in preaching your word.
- 6:05Stretch out your hand with healing power.
- 6:08May miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your
- 6:13holy servant, Jesus. After this prayer, the meeting
- 6:17place shook and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 6:22Then they preached the Word of God with boldness.
- 6:26All the believers were united in heart and mind, and they felt
- 6:31that what they owned was not their own, so they shared
- 6:34everything they had. The apostles testified
- 6:37powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God's
- 6:40great blessing was upon them all.
- 6:43There were no needy people among them because those who owned
- 6:46land or houses would sell them and bring the money to the
- 6:49apostles to give to those in need.
- 6:52For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed
- 6:56Barnabas, which means son of encouragement.
- 7:00He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of
- 7:03Cyprus. He sold the field he owned and
- 7:07brought the money to the apostles.
- 7:18Lord Jesus, help us to remember that your Spirit is 1.
- 7:22Not of timidity, but of boldness.
- 7:26And Lord, you ask us to step into scary places and to speak
- 7:30your truth. Oh, and for us to do that, we
- 7:33are going to need your help. Holy Spirit, come, come and fill
- 7:38us with your truth and your boldness and bravery so that
- 7:42when the time comes, we can open our mouths and speak.
- 7:46Speak with authority and boldness so that people can hear
- 7:50us and know that this is beyond us.
- 7:54But this is from you, our wonderful, loving present God.
- 8:01Thank you that you choose to engage our world, and thank you
- 8:04that you use us as part of how you do this.
- 8:09So we just surrender our lives to you and pray that you use us
- 8:12mightifully or quietly or anywhere in between, however you
- 8:18please. Because you are our God and our
- 8:20Saviour, and we love you and we worship you, and we pray all
- 8:25these things in your wonderful name, Jesus, Amen.
