- 0:00Certain symbols instantly stir emotion in the human heart.
- 0:18A white flag speaks of surrender.
- 0:21A wedding ring speaks of covenant love.
- 0:24A cross reminds us of sacrifice and redemption.
- 0:28And after a storm passes, when sunlight breaks through the darkened skies, there appears
- 0:33another symbol that still causes people to stop and look upward.
- 0:38The rainbow.
- 0:39But the rainbow is far more than a beautiful phenomenon of nature.
- 0:45It is a message from heaven.
- 0:48Welcome to Traveler's Tales, produced by Enjoying the Journey.
- 0:51I'm your host, Greg Dowdy.
- 0:53Today our journey takes us deeper into the world of scripture.
- 0:57The Bible is not just a collection of verses.
- 1:00It is a record of real places, real people, and real events.
- 1:04Every city, every custom, every landscape carries meaning.
- 1:09And when we begin to understand the world behind the text, the truth of God's word shines
- 1:15even brighter.
- 1:16A special thanks to John Buckner for his insight into Bible culture and customs that help bring
- 1:22these biblical settings to life for us.
- 1:26In Genesis 9, Noah and his family have just stepped out of the ark onto a broken world.
- 1:32The storm is over.
- 1:34The judgment has passed.
- 1:36The earth is quiet.
- 1:38And it is there, in the aftermath of devastation, that God speaks these gracious words.
- 1:44I do set my bow in the cloud.
- 1:48What an astonishing statement.
- 1:50The Hebrew word used for bow is keshet.
- 1:55Throughout the Old Testament, the word most often refers to a weapon of war.
- 1:59It is the bow of a soldier that he would carry into the battle.
- 2:03It is the bow Jonathan handed to David as a sign of covenant friendship.
- 2:09Yet here in Genesis, God takes the very symbol of warfare and places it in the clouds.
- 2:15Why?
- 2:17Because God was declaring peace.
- 2:20The judge of all the earth was showing mankind that his weapon was no longer pointed down
- 2:25in wrath.
- 2:27The bow now faces upward toward heaven itself.
- 2:31The storm had ended, and mercy had spoken.
- 2:35God transformed an instrument of judgment into a symbol of grace.
- 2:41And every time clouds gather and rain begins to fall, God says, look up, remember my covenant.
- 2:48Remember my faithfulness.
- 2:51Friend, that rainbow is not merely about weather.
- 2:55It is about the character of God.
- 2:57All throughout Scripture, the rainbow becomes connected with the very glory of the Lord.
- 3:04Ezekiel saw the glory of God surrounded by the appearance of a rainbow.
- 3:09The Apostle John looked into heaven itself and saw a rainbow encircling the throne of
- 3:15God.
- 3:16Even in eternity, the rainbow remains near the throne as a reminder that our God is glorious,
- 3:23faithful, and true.
- 3:26Think about that for a moment.
- 3:27The rainbow stretches from Genesis to Revelation, from Noah standing on a flooded earth to John
- 3:34standing before a heavenly throne.
- 3:36The rainbow still testifies that God keeps His promises.
- 3:40And ultimately, the rainbow points us to Jesus Christ.
- 3:44Christ is the covenant God made with humanity.
- 3:48At the cross, judgment and mercy met together.
- 3:52The wrath we deserved was poured out upon Him so that peace could be offered to us.
- 4:00The abandoned bow in the clouds remind us that God delights in mercy toward those who
- 4:06come to Him by faith.
- 4:08That does not mean storms will never come.
- 4:11In fact, the rainbow only appears when clouds are present.
- 4:15And perhaps that is one of the greatest lessons of all.
- 4:19God does not promise a cloudless sky.
- 4:23But He does promise His covenant presence in the storm.
- 4:27Some of you today may be walking beneath dark clouds.
- 4:31There may be burdens, disappointments, fears, or unanswered prayers hanging over your life.
- 4:37But child of God, do not stare only at the storm.
- 4:41Look for His bow in the cloud.
- 4:44Look for the reminders of His faithfulness.
- 4:47The same God who kept His promise to Noah has never broken a single promise to His children.
- 4:54Every rainbow preaches a sermon that God remembers, God reigns, God is faithful.
- 5:02And one day the whole earth will be flooded again, not with water, but with the knowledge
- 5:08of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.
- 5:12Until that day, every promise will be fulfilled completely.
- 5:19Until then, when skies grow dark and a thunder rolls, remember this, our God has not abandoned
- 5:26His people.
- 5:28His bow still hangs in the clouds as a testimony of His mercy, His might, and His unchanging
- 5:34covenant love.
- 5:36So lift up your eyes.
- 5:38The storm is not the final word.
- 5:40The covenant of God is.
- 5:44Thank you for traveling with me today on Traveler's Tales.
