- 0:25Welcome to Kick Ass Daily, where we bring news, trivia, fun
- 0:29facts, and more just for curious kids like you.
- 0:32Today we're talking about a topic that might surprise you,
- 0:35countries where summer happens in December.
- 0:38That's right, while many of us are bundling up in scarves and
- 0:41jackets, getting ready for the cold winter months, and maybe
- 0:44dreaming of snow, there are places in the world where people
- 0:47are heading to the beach, eating ice cream, and celebrating the
- 0:51warmest time of the year. Let's start at the beginning.
- 0:54Have you ever wondered why seasons are different in
- 0:56different parts of the world? The answer is all about the
- 0:59Earth and how it moves. Earth is shaped like a ball and
- 1:02it spins or rotates around an imaginary line called an axis.
- 1:08But here's the cool part. The axis isn't straight up and
- 1:11down, it's tilted. The Earth is tilted at an angle
- 1:14of about 23.5°. This tilt is the reason we have
- 1:19seasons. As the Earth moves around the
- 1:21sun during the year, sometimes the top half of the planet,
- 1:24called the northern hemisphere, is tilted towards the sun.
- 1:28Other times the bottom half, called the southern hemisphere,
- 1:32is tilted towards the sun. When you're half of the world is
- 1:35tilted towards the sun, you get more sunlight and it's warmer.
- 1:39That's summer. When your half is tilted away,
- 1:42you get less sunlight and it's colder.
- 1:44That's winter. Most kids listening to this
- 1:46podcast probably live in the northern Hemisphere.
- 1:49That's where countries like the United States, Canada, most of
- 1:52Europe, and much of Asia are found.
- 1:55In those places, December is usually cold and wintry.
- 1:58But let's take a trip to the other side of the world, the
- 2:01Southern Hemisphere. That's where the seasons are
- 2:04flipped. When it's winter up north, it's
- 2:06summer down South. Let's talk about some real
- 2:09countries where people celebrate summer in December 1st let's
- 2:13visit Australia. Australia is a massive country
- 2:17and it's famous for its beautiful beaches, unique
- 2:20animals like Kangaroos and koalas, and the Great Barrier
- 2:24Reef. In Australia, December is the
- 2:27start of summer. Instead of building snowmen,
- 2:29kids are going surfing, swimming and having barbecues outside.
- 2:34Schools in Australia usually have their long summer holiday
- 2:37from December to late January or early February.
- 2:40So December is a time for lots of outdoor fun.
- 2:43Did you know that in Australia some people even have their
- 2:46Christmas celebrations at the beach?
- 2:48Imagine opening presents in your swimsuit and enjoying a picnic
- 2:51under the sun. Next, let's travel to New
- 2:54Zealand. It's a group of islands
- 2:56southeast of Australia. New Zealand is known for its
- 2:59beautiful mountains, forests, and amazing wildlife like Kiwis,
- 3:04which are flightless birds. In New Zealand, summer also
- 3:07starts in December. Many families go camping,
- 3:10hiking, or spend time at the beach during the holidays.
- 3:14Since December is so warm, people often eat cold foods like
- 3:18salads, seafood, and even ice cream for their Christmas meal.
- 3:22Now, let's fly across the Pacific Ocean to South America.
- 3:26Several countries here have summer in December too.
- 3:29Let's stop in Brazil first. Brazil is the largest country in
- 3:33South America, and it's famous for its rainforests, soccer, and
- 3:37big cities like Rio de Janeiro. In Brazil, December is hot and
- 3:42sunny in most places. Many people go to the beach to
- 3:45cool off. In Rio, there's a huge fireworks
- 3:48show every New Year's Eve, and millions of people gather on the
- 3:52sandy beaches to watch. Some wear all white because it's
- 3:56believed to bring good luck. Argentina is another big country
- 3:59in South America with December summer.
- 4:02In Argentina, December is the end of the school year and the
- 4:06start of the long summer break. People enjoy outdoor sports,
- 4:09swimming, and going on vacations in Buenos Aires, the capital
- 4:14city. Parks and swimming pools are
- 4:16very busy in December because everyone wants to cool down.
- 4:20Let's not forget South Africa. South Africa is located at the
- 4:24southern tip of the African continent.
- 4:26It's known for its wildlife like lions, elephants, and zebras, as
- 4:31well as its beautiful coastlines.
- 4:33In South Africa, December is a popular time for families to
- 4:37travel to the beach or go on safari trips to see animals in
- 4:40the wild. Many people have picnics and
- 4:43barbecues, which they call Bryce.
- 4:45Schools are out for the summer holidays, and cities are filled
- 4:49with music and festivals. Now you might be wondering, are
- 4:53there other places where summer happens in December?
- 4:55Yes, some other countries in the Southern Hemisphere include
- 4:59Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay in South America, as well as
- 5:03Namibia, Botswana and Madagascar in Africa.
- 5:07All of these places have warm weather in December.
- 5:10Let's talk about holidays. You've probably heard a lot
- 5:13about Christmas and winter, with snow, hot chocolate and warm
- 5:17fires. But in the Southern Hemisphere,
- 5:19Christmas is a summer holiday. People might decorate palm trees
- 5:23instead of pine trees, and they might eat cold desserts instead
- 5:27of hot ones. In Australia, there's a popular
- 5:30Christmas song called 6 White Boomers, which is about Santa
- 5:33Claus using Kangaroos instead of reindeer to pull a sleigh in the
- 5:37hot Australian summer. In South Africa, people often
- 5:40have outdoor feasts and play games outside.
- 5:43In Brazil, Christmas lights and decorations are everywhere, but
- 5:47instead of snow, you'll see sand and sunshine.
- 5:50Here's a fun Did you Know moment.
- 5:53In New Zealand, there's a special tree called the
- 5:55Pohotagua. It blooms with bright red
- 5:58flowers in December and people call it the New Zealand
- 6:01Christmas Tree. Families have picnics under its
- 6:04shade during the holidays. Now, you might be curious about
- 6:07how people in these countries stay cool during the hot
- 6:10December days. In Australia, many homes have
- 6:13swimming pools and public pools are very popular.
- 6:16People wear light, comfortable clothing like shorts, T-shirts
- 6:20and flip flops. In Brazil, people eat refreshing
- 6:24foods like acai bowls, which are made from a purple fruit that
- 6:27grows in the Amazon rainforest. In South Africa, frozen treats
- 6:31like ice lollies are a favorite snack for kids.
- 6:34Let's explore how schools are different, too.
- 6:37In the Northern Hemisphere, students usually have their long
- 6:40summer vacation in June, July and August.
- 6:44But in countries like Australia and New Zealand, the big break
- 6:47is in December and January. That means their school year
- 6:51starts in late January or early February and ends in December,
- 6:55just before the summer holidays begin.
- 6:57Sports are also different in the summer months.
- 7:00In Australia, December is a big month for cricket, which is a
- 7:04popular sport there. Instead of playing in the cold,
- 7:07kids and adults are out on sunny fields playing under blue skies.
- 7:12In Brazil, soccer is played all year round, but December matches
- 7:16are often held in the evening to avoid the hottest part of the
- 7:18day. Now let's talk about nature.
- 7:21In the Northern hemisphere, plants and trees often lose
- 7:25their leaves in winter, and animals might hibernate or slow
- 7:28down. But in the Southern hemisphere,
- 7:30December is when flowers bloom, trees are green, and many
- 7:34animals are busy raising their young.
- 7:37For example, in Australia, it's common to see baby Kangaroos
- 7:41called Joey's poking their heads out of their mother's pouches.
- 7:45You might be wondering, if you traveled to one of these
- 7:47countries in December, would you feel the difference right away?
- 7:50The answer is yes. If you left a snowy city in the
- 7:54Northern hemisphere and flew to Sydney, Australia, you could
- 7:57step off the airplane and find yourself in bright sunshine with
- 8:01people wearing shorts and sandals.
- 8:03The time difference would be big, too, because Australia is
- 8:07many hours ahead of North America and Europe.
- 8:10You might feel jet lagged, but you definitely notice the summer
- 8:14weather. Here's another Did you know
- 8:16moment. Penguins live in the southern
- 8:18Hemisphere, too. In places like South Africa,
- 8:21Argentina, and even Australia, you can find Penguins enjoying
- 8:25the summer sun in December. Not all Penguins live in icy
- 8:29places. Some live on warm, sandy
- 8:31beaches. Let's review some of the most
- 8:34important things we've learned today.
- 8:36The reason some countries have summer in December is because of
- 8:39the way the Earth is tilted as it moves around the sun.
- 8:42When it's winter in the Northern Hemisphere, it's summer in the
- 8:46Southern hemisphere. Countries like Australia, New
- 8:49Zealand, Brazil, Argentina, and South Africa all have their
- 8:53warmest season during December. People in these countries
- 8:56celebrate holidays like Christmas and New Year's with
- 8:59summer traditions like going to the beach, having barbecues and
- 9:03eating ice cream. Schools have their long summer
- 9:05holidays in December and January.
- 9:08Plants, animals, and sports are all active during this time,
- 9:12making it a season full of life and fun.
- 9:14So next time you hear about someone celebrating Christmas at
- 9:18the beach or having a summer birthday in December, you'll
- 9:21know why. The world is a big, amazing
- 9:24place and there's always something new to discover.
