- 0:01Je Langwad is our Broncos insider Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five Pro Football the
- 0:07Insider. I've covered the league a little while Jeff from leg Wall. His
- 0:11appearances are always must listen radio. You learn a lot on Altitude Sports Radio
- 0:17ninety two five. We knew how the first part of the draft was going
- 0:22to go, and then as it went, you just never know how how
- 0:25things are going to shape up. But you know, right there around pick
- 0:29twelve, I get a phone call and I'm just extremely excited and honored for
- 0:34it to be the Denver Broncos. And I truly can tell you this,
- 0:37if I could pick, uh, you know where I wanted to go,
- 0:40I was going to pick Denver because of the relationships that we had built throughout
- 0:44the process. You know, I just felt like it was a great fit
- 0:48for me. And I'm just excited to get that phone call. Yes,
- 0:54that is new Broncos quarterback bow Nicks drafted with the number twelve overall selection.
- 1:00That's right. Sean Payton has chosen to place his eggs into the bow Nicks
- 1:07basket, joining us right now to discuss he is with us on the Ramos
- 1:11Law Hotline. Car accident you need Ramos Law medical doctor and attorney Ramoslaw dot
- 1:15com. It is NFL reporter for ESPN R pal Jeff Lagwald. What up,
- 1:21Leggy? How are we doing? Follows? We're doing good? Jeff
- 1:25bon Nicks was selected by the Denver Broncos at number twelve. Why do they
- 1:30do that? I guess desperation, you know, opportunity met desperation, and
- 1:38and you know they've they've longed for a quarterback, quarterback of the future,
- 1:44a long term solution, and in a historic first round, unlike any other
- 1:49first round I've ever seen in my career, they made bow Nicks the sixth
- 1:55quarterback off the board of twelve picks. So we are to believe that of
- 2:00the twelve highest graded players in this draft, the Denver Broncos had six quarterbacks
- 2:05among them. So it's just unlike anything I've ever seen. And you know,
- 2:12if they get it right, no one's going to care or remember or
- 2:15any of it. But I think bo Nicks is going to need every bit
- 2:20of his composure and maturity to come into a situation where so much is going
- 2:24to be expected of them. Yeah, Leggy, you had bo Nicks rated
- 2:29as your number thirty nine prospect in your top one hundred. This year,
- 2:32the Broncos take him there at number twelve. You use the word, but
- 2:37I kind of wonder about the balance on this a little bit. Is it
- 2:39just that Nicks was an unusually good fit for Denver so they had to take
- 2:45him at twelve or was it the speckles of desperation that were all over it?
- 2:51Probably both, Nate. I mean, that's there's a school of thought
- 2:53in the in the scouting world that value is always in important, but that
- 3:00if you see your guy, take your guy, you know, don't don't
- 3:04mess around and trade down eight nine spots to get an additional pick or two,
- 3:09and then you know, somebody else takes him and then you're left with
- 3:15with nothing. You know. The issue is is really that this was in
- 3:21the illogical first round overall league wide, and there's I've never encountered a team
- 3:29in my thirty seven years of doing this that had six quarterbacks with first round
- 3:34grades on them before any single draft I've ever reviewed or been a part of.
- 3:39It's never happened, or I've never had a team official scout, GM
- 3:44coach. I've never had one person from one NFL team tell me in one
- 3:50NFL draft, they had six first round grades on quarterbacks. So this this
- 3:53draft was historical. We've never seen anything like it. The only comparison and
- 4:00we have is the gold standard in eighty three. You know, which three
- 4:04of the six Hall of say three of the six quarterbacks taken in the first
- 4:09round or Hall of famers, and yet only two of those guys were taken
- 4:12in the top ten. All right, Leggy, how I was reading your
- 4:20draft evaluation online? How soon should we expect him to start? I mean,
- 4:26what what does this do to the quarterback competition? And I guess may
- 4:30and I kind of asked a question yesterday, why did you trade for Zach
- 4:33Wilson? Then? I mean, this is I keep coming up with the
- 4:36Josh McDaniels twenty ten analogy of you know, you started with Kyle Orton,
- 4:42then they added Brady Quinn, then they go and draft him Tebow because Josh
- 4:46just loved being around the guy. How soon should we expect bo to start?
- 4:50Is he the expected starter? Do you think coming into camp? Where
- 4:54does this all rank? Oh? I don't think we you know, we
- 4:58gotta see every buddy on the field and see what happens. But you know,
- 5:02the fact he's a little older, the fact he's played more games than
- 5:09perhaps any Power five quarterback is ever going to play because of the COVID situation.
- 5:15You know, there was a long time when Philip Rivers is fifty one
- 5:18games was like the unreachable thing, and Nick's had sixty one. So he's
- 5:26got a part of his resume that other guys don't have that give him an
- 5:29advantage. You know. You couple that with a coaching family and all of
- 5:34those things. He's got a little bit of a head start compared to you
- 5:40know, maybe a guy who's played one or two years full time. But
- 5:45we also don't have any data at all about how Sean Payton will handle a
- 5:49rookie quarterback. Nobody's ever seen it. I've told people I know people who've
- 5:56coached with Sean who have told me even they don't know how it will go,
- 6:00or how he will handle it, or what his timetable will be.
- 6:03So a lot of us is kind of just wait and see. I mean,
- 6:08certainly in the public domain, you're gonna have the constant you know,
- 6:12anybody anytime somebody who isn't named bo Nix throws an interception where you're you're gonna
- 6:17hear people asking when is bo Nick's gonna play? All right, let me
- 6:21follow up with this too, because I've tried to explain this. You've talked
- 6:26to me about it. Sanford's talked to me about it. Others have talked
- 6:30to me about it. What's the throw that most concern you that bo is
- 6:33going to need to make that his arm doesn't seem that he's not good at.
- 6:39How about I put it that way, what are the throws that he
- 6:42will struggle with? Some of it we don't know yet, and you know
- 6:45a lot of it is it's just the data saying. You know, in
- 6:47the Oregon offense, it's hard to find the the NFL deep out, you
- 6:54know, it's hard to find the the skinny posts, you know, the
- 7:00slot fade. You just don't see a lot of the intermediate and deep part
- 7:05of the field. I mean, again, a third of his completions this
- 7:09year, a third we're at the line of scrimmager, behind the line of
- 7:13scrimmage. I mean that skewed data. Now, the Broncos say they took
- 7:17all of those throws out of the equation and he still fared very well in
- 7:21their analytics. So Their contention is one of the criticisms of scouts of Knicks
- 7:30has been armstrength and the ability to push the ball to the far hash.
- 7:36Their contention is they addressed that in the private workout and saw what they needed
- 7:42to see when they took all the short throws out of the equation. Talking
- 7:47to Jeff Lagweld here, after round one of the NFL drafts, the six
- 7:51quarterbacks go in the top twelve. The top three were certainly predictable. Pennix
- 7:58at number eight to Atlanta was a stunner. Minnesota moved up a pick to
- 8:01get JJ McCarthy at number ten, and then the Broncos take their guy bone
- 8:05Nicks at number twelve. All of that said, leggy, accurate, quick
- 8:11processor game manager. Again, normally you can find those kind of guys in
- 8:16this second or third round, but the Broncos chose to take him at number
- 8:20twelve. What specifically about bon Knicks do you see where you're like, Okay,
- 8:24this absolutely can work in a Sean Payton offense. Well, that's what
- 8:30I mean. He his the fit is he doesn't take sacks. It's he's
- 8:37really really that may be his biggest awareness strength. Right now, I've taken
- 8:43last year, Leggie. That's pretty impressive. He understands where pressure is coming
- 8:48from, he understands what he needs to do with it, and he understands
- 8:50it before the snap, which in that you know, look, you got
- 8:54to give him all the credit in the world. That is a that is
- 8:58a hot commodity quarterback, and it is hard to find, and it doesn't
- 9:03really develop as much as coaches always hoped it does. You know, a
- 9:07lot of it is like pass rushers. You know, you can either sack
- 9:11the quarterback or you can't. You know, you can either have the ability
- 9:15to process pre snap where the pressure is coming from, or you don't.
- 9:18And he's really good at that, and he moves the ball, he gets
- 9:24the ball out, and as we all know with the decision to release Russell
- 9:28Wilson, those two items are pretty damn high on Sean Payton's list. Don't
- 9:33take a sack and get the ball the hell out. And he does those
- 9:37two things very well. All right, If he's going to do that even
- 9:41better, he's going to need guys to throw to Courtland Sutton. We'll see
- 9:46how that story plays out. Still kind of a question mark in the tight
- 9:50end position. Third round leg. He doesn't look like they're going to be
- 9:54getting into the second round lest some wacky happens. Let's say they sit pat
- 9:58like they did last night. Who is going to be available that he could
- 10:03actually get some offensive help with in the third round, which I know is
- 10:05tough to project, but do you think it'll be like who do you think
- 10:11they'd even target in the third round? At this point, you can't really
- 10:15target any even that's look how many picks they are away from seventy six,
- 10:20you know right now, it's you know, they're one run from having a
- 10:24you know, one run at a position from having a restack almost you know,
- 10:28if six pass rushers go in the you know, in a twelve picks
- 10:33fan in the second round, then you know you're you're stuck. But there
- 10:37should be a tight end who could contribute pretty fast. There should be a
- 10:41receiver or two, and there should be an edge player two and you know,
- 10:48maybe a corner. But it's you know that this draft sinds out pretty
- 10:54fast in the day three, So I think you're going to see teams really
- 10:58digging in and not moving around the board much unless they see specific guys they
- 11:03want. So they're gonna have to see how it falls, but I think
- 11:07they'll have a look at those positions. Talking to Jeff Legweld here, as
- 11:11we're said to get round two under way this evening, Broncos will pick in
- 11:13the third twelfth pick of the third round. That's number seventy six overall.
- 11:18Leggy from a macros perspective, taking a look back at round one, who
- 11:24impressed you last night? Which picks did you really like? There was a
- 11:26lot of chalk in this draft, But now looking back on it, whose
- 11:31work did you like in round one of the draft? Yeah? I think
- 11:35the teams that were patient and did the proverbial trust the board did very well.
- 11:41I mean, and you know, the Raiders ended up with a top
- 11:46three, top four player on a lot of teams boards, one pick after
- 11:52the Broncos. So I thought they did at aut Chicago, you know,
- 11:56they just stayed put. They took the quarterback they liked, and they got
- 12:03one of the top three receivers, you know, they so you get to
- 12:05bracket that, you know. I thought Dallas Turner was a great pick,
- 12:09would have been a great pick here. Uh. He was one of my
- 12:11favorite players on the board, and I thought I thought the corners. The
- 12:16top two corners went a lot later than I thought they would, And I
- 12:20think the teams that got those guys will be will be pretty happy. Yeah,
- 12:24there's good players all over the teams. We were talking about this before,
- 12:28Leggy. I mean, look at Philadelphia. They we talk about the
- 12:31Eagles as a trade up candidate with Denver to go and get to the corner.
- 12:33They just hung out in twenty two and the guy fell directly into the
- 12:37lap. Yeah. May I mean the the Ravens have made a living,
- 12:41Yeah, just sitting and waiting for awesomeness to fall their way. And they
- 12:45did it again. And this is and you know and this isn't you know
- 12:48all bow Nicks did with an answer to the phone and say yes, thank
- 12:52you. But the issue for the Broncos and the big picture is how many
- 12:56Pro Bowls did you leave on the board? Uh? Because they had when
- 13:01their pick rolled around, they had whoever was the best, the highest rated
- 13:07defensive player on their board, whoever it was was available. So the top
- 13:13three edge rushers were available, the top two corners were available, the best
- 13:16tight end was available, and two of the best receivers were available, and
- 13:20they took a player they likely had ranked behind all those guys, whether they'll
- 13:26ever admit it or not. Real quick, Jeff, you spin me back
- 13:33to that. You know what, We're tight. Just let Jeff go.
- 13:37It's all right, we'll save it from Monday. Jeff, how about that
- 13:39one. Your draft's all done? Well, We'll never let you go,
- 13:41Jeff, because we love you, but we will talk to you on Monday.
- 13:45We appreciate it as always. Excellent draft breakdown, Jeff leg Waald,
- 13:50Thanks man, Thanks hellos
