- 1:36time now for Johnny ready with your call to San Francisco. Go ahead,
- 1:44please hello John, Yeah, I'm in Salt City. I'm surprised they have
- 1:49phones there. How does it look located at Jeweli on it I just got
- 1:53here. It looks terrible, and I haven't even located a hotel room,
- 1:57mister Gumby. If I have any lucky all, I'll be back in San
- 2:00Francisco by tonight. Where's that Joliet. I'll serve the subpoena on him if
- 2:05he's around. From what I've been able to pick up, there isn't much
- 2:07of a law enforcement agency here. You get that subpoena in his hands and
- 2:10he'll have to answer to it. He's still in this county even if they
- 2:15have to use state police to grab them. Okay, anything I can do
- 2:19for your year, Yeah, find out how a town like this ever got
- 2:22built? Tonight and every weekday night, Bob Bailey in the transcribed Adventures of
- 2:34the Man with the Action Packed Expense Account, America's Fabulous Freelance Insurance Investigator Ours
- 2:38Truly Johnny Dollar Expense Account submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, Joe Samuel Rubin
- 2:59and Associates and Show and Spoker's Majestic Building, Hartford, Connecticut. The following
- 3:02is an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the Salt City matter. It
- 3:12all started when Sam Rubin asked me to bodyguard Ed Julian Julian was supposed to
- 3:15be in San Francisco when I never saw him there. I saw his wife
- 3:20and his lawyer, and the insurance agent who had sold him the policy,
- 3:23but no ed Julian. And then a clerk at his apartment told me about
- 3:28Salt City. He didn't tell me much else. I found the rest out
- 3:30for myself. I checked my bag in a station locker and walked over to
- 3:36the Salt City bar and grill. Expense account had him twelve ten cents coffee.
- 3:42Just get it on the train. Yeah, a few minutes ago.
- 3:44Everybody calls me Connie. Everybody calls me Johnny. That's nice. Never seen
- 3:51you around here before? Well, I've never been around here before. Can
- 3:54I stay long? I hope not. No fault of yours. I blame
- 4:00you. Soon as I get a steak for myself, I'm pulling out to
- 4:02all kinds of funny things going on around here now. For instance, last
- 4:05week, I love mister Rena. I recognized him from the landry killing that
- 4:15he'd stood trial for in Baltimore in nineteen fifty. He still looked like his
- 4:20pictures, tall and quiet. I'd always wondered where he disappeared too, after
- 4:26his lawyer got him off with a broad jury. My name is Jim Reno.
- 4:30I run this restaurant. Everything all right, everything's fine, that's good.
- 4:35Good you. You would have some less too. It's time of morning.
- 4:41Sure, just the thing, Connie. Why don't you go back in
- 4:44the kitchen put some stew on the fire. Well, mister Reno, I
- 4:47don't cook, you know that? Learn? Yes, sir, yes,
- 4:51sir. You wouldn't be connected with the Salt City Smellerworks, would you,
- 4:57mister Reno. I own them with some other friends. Then you might know
- 5:02ed Julian. I understand, Yes, yes, I know it. He's
- 5:08out there at the Smeller Works, staying in a cottage right by the office.
- 5:11I'll call you a taxi if you like. Well, the last taxi
- 5:14driver I asked to drive me out there threatened to call a cop this town.
- 5:17It's better if I call you know, small town. Sure, finish
- 5:24your coffee, mister Donner. What I'll call a cab for you. I
- 5:29own the taxi company too. Expense account adam twelve ten more cents more coffee.
- 5:36While I waited for the cab to appear. Somehow, I wasn't surprised
- 5:42that Jim Reno had been able to read my name in the coffee grounds,
- 5:46but by that time I'd learned not to be surprised by anything in Salt City.
- 5:49I had him thirteen fifty cents tipped. The cab ride out to the
- 5:53smeller works was on, mister Reno. All the chimneys and snacks were dark
- 5:58and sullen against a gray storm gathering sky. The only sound was a gasoline
- 6:02generator somewhere. Lights were on at intervals across the smoky area. One dim
- 6:08light burning in a little yellow cottage just inside the main gate caught my eye.
- 6:13No one seemed around to ask questions of me, so I walked in
- 6:18ed Julian and another man I didn't recognize were sitting in chairs opposite each other.
- 6:25Neither of them moved or flicked an eyelash. They just sat there,
- 6:28propped up, staring at each other. I got closer and decided one could
- 6:31get surprised and Salt City. They weren't dead. Dead men don't perspire,
- 6:39dead men don't have pulses, dead men don't breathe. They were just kind
- 6:46of in between the people. Ever walk into a house in Salt City and
- 6:54find two men just sitting in a room quietly staring at each other, and
- 6:59they had to turn around and walk out. Shine, don don't fall down
- 7:04on your hands and knees and fall around the floor. I didn't. Don't
- 7:09start to laught yourself about nothing at all. Don't get creepy and perspire,
- 7:16and don't throp yourself up against the wall and wait for something to happen.
- 7:21Then and I could see somebody standing beside me looking down, and I couldn't
- 7:28move my arms and my legs, And that's pretty funny. Somebody else about
- 7:32it. Then it came to me. I was doing the laughing. The
- 7:36noise was coming out of me. Somebody move down and took my gun out
- 7:42of my shoulder holster. He was wearing gloves and dark glasses. And then
- 7:46all at once he had a fee, easy dollar, easy, I'll just
- 7:51take this, and sure I know all about it. That was all about
- 7:57it. Well, what what is this? What's you came to town looking
- 8:01for at Julian so you could protect him, maybe service at pena, get
- 8:05him in jail. Well, I don't need no protect me. You can
- 8:07see that. He don't need no subpoena. He don't need anything. Dolla,
- 8:13not now you hear me, You slip me something at the cafe.
- 8:20No, don't you worry about that. You see, Dolla, you were
- 8:22just out on a regular job for Sam Rubin. But you got in a
- 8:28fight in Ed's place in San Francisco, bashed up a couple of his boys.
- 8:31He came over to sell City looking for him. He walked in this
- 8:35place and Ed was sitting here talking to Chili Winters other fellow's Chilly Winners,
- 8:41and nah, you're getting it, Chilly Winters, a big powder from the
- 8:46east. Bad boy. Ed didn't want you to protect him, Diddy,
- 8:50Dalla, No, no he didn't. He didn't want to take the subpoena.
- 8:54No he didn't. So you argued with him, didn't you. Oh,
- 8:58you argued with him like you did with a pair of his boys in
- 9:01San Francisco. You beat them up. Well, Chili got into the argument
- 9:05here, now, didn't he. Chili might have pulled a gun on you.
- 9:09He was famous for that. I don't know what your and you had
- 9:13to protect yourself. You just pull out your gun and you shot him both
- 9:18like this. Oh no, no, well, Dollar, you just shot
- 9:28and killed Ed. Julian and Chili went us it's got a job as anyone
- 9:31in his town of a saw and I saw it. Yes, I'll have
- 9:37to call the police and an upsee reportal show they were drugged before they were
- 9:43killed. And how how are you going to explain that we don't believe in
- 9:48autops reports and Saw City all our police need is your gun. It won't
- 9:54working on a dollar, you know it will. He'll be rained and dieted,
- 10:00tried right here in Sault City. It'll be second degree or self defense.
- 10:05Maybe. Now, if I'd ha done it, some of the boys
- 10:07had done, it would have been all kinds of trouble from San Francisco to
- 10:11New York. This is the way it was triggered. This is the way.
- 10:16You walk right into it, right smack into pay You crazy fool,
- 10:24You can't do anything. Got to a street and tried to drag me up
- 10:28with him, and then both of us toppled over into a lamp when I
- 10:31had the lamp base in my ear out. In any other place, the
- 10:46next move would have been Toronto, the nearest police station. But from what
- 10:48I'd heard of the brand of law and order practice in Salt City, that
- 10:52wouldn't have been much help to me. Instead, I walked the three miles
- 10:56back to town, making my way over the crust of arroyos and cactus lands
- 10:58that seemed surrounded. I first stopped a Reno bar and grill, Oh my,
- 11:05what happened to you? That's about the longest story in history. Anybody
- 11:07around it's you and me. Johnny. My full name's Johnny Dollar. I
- 11:11have an insurance investigator. I came here to see it, Julia, and
- 11:13I saw him, saw him shot to death. Right now, listen to
- 11:16me. I saw him shot to death along with a man named Chili Winters
- 11:20about half an hour ago. Jim Reno did the shooting with my gun.
- 11:22I better call him. Wait, wait, now, listen to me.
- 11:26Remember I came in here from the station. I made a phone call from
- 11:28that booth outside there. Yeah. I sat down, had some coffee,
- 11:31two cuppies. We talked. I remember you remember putting anything in my coffee?
- 11:35Me? What are you talking about? Somebody did, probably Reno when
- 11:39he came up. Now, look, you said something about wanting to get
- 11:41out of Salt City. Shure, now's your chance. I'll get you out
- 11:45of here. You got a car, no, all right? Can you
- 11:48buy one for this three fifty. I think so, so do it.
- 11:52I'll wait here for you. You better not wait here. My room's across
- 11:54the street, second floor. Use the back stairway. I'll be there in
- 11:58a half hour. Expense account it him fourteen three hundred and fifty dollars one
- 12:03automobile nineteen forty eight finag The waitress returned with it in exactly one half hour.
- 12:07In another ten minutes the time it took it to pack two suitcases,
- 12:11we were on the road to San Francisco. I had him fifteen eighteen dollars
- 12:15and thirty cents gas and oil. It took us seven hours and twenty minutes
- 12:18to make it. I had him seventeen fifty dollars. I gave the waitress
- 12:22the car and the money, then went back to my hotel, showered,
- 12:24shaved, and changed clothes, and made a phone call. Ooh, Johnny
- 12:28Dollar, inspector. You'll want it for murder in Salt City. Police all
- 12:31over the state of looking for you. Yeah, I thought they might be,
- 12:33inspector. I'll be glad to explain all of it, but I need
- 12:37some time. Come on, Dollar, explain it and then we'll see if
- 12:39you're gonna have any time I listen to me. I was sent a salt
- 12:43city to be a patsy reno wanted to get rid of Ed Julian and Chili
- 12:46Winner to die. You never them whine, but you've got five minutes to
- 12:50get down here and turn yourself in on the lives. You go out on
- 12:52an apb I got out of the hotel in about twenty seconds. Caret pick
- 12:58me up and I spent it him fifteen three bucks transportation getting to Ray Gumby's
- 13:03office at eight Julian's Enterprises. No, Ray Gumpy it him sixteen eight dollars
- 13:07more cab fair, this time locating Ray Gumby's home address an apartment over in
- 13:11Berkeley. He took a long time to wentz No. I don't know how
- 13:22he ever made it with the two holes in his neck. He lurched forward
- 13:26in my car. Who did it, mister Gumby? Swift? Do you
- 13:31look? You met him? But it's apartment house? Keep by bup an
- 13:43oracle? What old bout? Why? Johnny? Why? It was a
- 14:03good question. Other Ray Gumby was a dead attorney, and Ed Julian and
- 14:07Chilling Winters were dead gunsels. Why everywhere I seem to go. People were
- 14:11dying hard, violently, without apparent reason why. I had one idea single
- 14:18thing, the feeling, the old feeling. It didn't explain anything. It
- 14:24was just there. Johnny Dollar, Johnny, this is Ellie. I've been
- 14:50worried to death about you. You might be even more worried when the papers
- 14:52come out. I'm wanted for murder. I listen to me. I don't
- 14:56have a lot of time to explain it to a policeman. Didn't kill anybody,
- 15:00Ellie, But I need help. Where can I meet you? If
- 15:03I remember right, there's a coffee shop over looking for you, all over
- 15:05town. Yeah, I suppose, so we better not pick any place like
- 15:09that. I have a blue Ford convertible of fifty two. You know where
- 15:11Fisherman's Wark is? Yeah, go there, watch for me. Expense account
- 15:24submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to Samuel Rubin, an Associates insurance Broker's Majestic
- 15:30Building, Hartford, Connecticut. The following is an accounting of expenditures during my
- 15:35investigation of the Salt City Matter. Expense account. I am nineteen twenty five
- 15:43cents car fair to Fisherman's War standing there in the light rain had occurred to
- 15:48me that forty eight hours had gone by since I'd last closed my eyes.
- 15:52I might have been reading a little when Eleanor Strawber showed up. Johnny,
- 16:00John Johnny, Yeah, Johnny, what have they done to him? Oh?
- 16:07Easy, hit easy, Hey, Look, maybe we'd better get out
- 16:10of here. Yes, this way all right? Fine? Fine, Johnny?
- 16:18What can I do to him? Didn't I tell you on the phone?
- 16:21I was wonderful murder? Yes's you going to ask me about that?
- 16:25You will tell me if you want to, Johnny. Oh, I'm going
- 16:27to tell you all right, And I want you to go to Inspector Dan
- 16:30Walsh the Hall of Justice and tell him go on, Well, some of
- 16:34it you know, some of it you don't know. I know I'm the
- 16:37cause of a lot of it. If I hadn't been so dumb as to
- 16:40sell that big policy to add Julian, you had no way of knowing.
- 16:44My job was to protect him, get him alive, keep him alive until
- 16:47the company could break their responsibility. And I've been trying to do that,
- 16:51But I had to find that Julian first. Sure. One of my best
- 16:55leads was an attorney named Ray Gumby. He hoped to get Julian into custody
- 16:59one way or another jail. That seemed a pretty good way for me to
- 17:02protect him. I got a tip from a hotel clerk that Ed was in
- 17:04Salt City with Jim Reno and some others. Go on Johnny Well. I
- 17:10took the train over to Salt City with a subpoenie to find it. He
- 17:12was there all right, but Jim Reno found me. First, he drugged
- 17:17my coffee, and when I went out to see Ed at the smell of
- 17:19Works, the drug began to work. I saw Ed and Chilly Winters.
- 17:23They were drug two. Reno came in a little while later and shot them
- 17:26with my gun. I got away from Reno. He was gonna haul me
- 17:30down and let the Salt City police charge me with murder. I think he
- 17:33owns the Salt City Police force. Two. I managed to get back here
- 17:37early this morning. I called the police and tried to explain all this here,
- 17:41but they wouldn't listen. I went over to see Ray Gumby. Elly
- 17:47Gumby was dying when I got there. He been shot twice. I don't
- 17:49know if the police know about him yet or not. Then I called you,
- 17:53who shot Gumby. There was those two thugs I'd tangled with over at
- 17:56that Junion's apartment. Swifty and Luke only names the reno killed Ed Julian and
- 18:02Chili went it. Yeah, anything else. One place the police won't be
- 18:07looking for you is my office. There's a nice couch there. You need
- 18:11some rest. She drove me over to her office, and ten minutes later
- 18:15I was asleep. About seven o'clock, I woke up, and for the
- 18:18first time in days, my head was clear, clear enough to think of
- 18:22a man with a pencil mark mustache who sold me information about Ed Julian being
- 18:26in Salt City. I found him in his rooms. Oh yeah, we
- 18:30got business. Well, please, my lapill, you worry about them,
- 18:36good and hard. I'm worried about the two men I saw murdered in cold
- 18:38blood in Salt City yesterday. I'm worried about the man who died in my
- 18:42arms early this morning. Most of all, I'm worried about myself. Please,
- 18:47I'll look. When you came to my hotel two days ago, you
- 18:49were taking a big chance about telling me where Ed Julian was. But it
- 18:53didn't make sense because your kind don't take chances what do you mean? I
- 18:57mean somebody paid you to look at me and tell me Julian was in Salt
- 19:00City. Oh no, mister Dollar. His wife didn't know he was there,
- 19:04the police didn't know he was there. No one but you. Now,
- 19:08once again, who paid you to tip me off that Ed Julian was
- 19:12in Salt City? Mister Dollar, just a clerk there. It was just
- 19:17as I explained. I happened to be working the switchboard and a call came
- 19:19in for mister Julian, and I just happened to over here lying I was
- 19:25in that Julian's apartment. His calls don't come through your switchboard downstairs. He's
- 19:27got a private line. Please, once more, who paid you to tell
- 19:32me that Ed Julian was in Salt City? No one paid me. Who
- 19:37was it? Told me? Oh? Is it mister Julil himself? What
- 19:52mister Julian Before he left town two nights ago, he told mister Smith to
- 19:57mister Luke all of us, it's difficult for you. And then he sent
- 20:03me a special delivery letter with fifty dollars in it and told me to go
- 20:06to you. I tell you he was in Sault City. Okay, Okay,
- 20:11relax what I don't want you to make a move. I just want
- 20:17you to stay where you are for the next half hour. Clear c expense
- 20:25account Adam twenty twenty cents. Phone call to Eleanor Strober. Johnny, are
- 20:29you all right? I'm getting better every minute. Did you talk to the
- 20:32police. Yes, they want to see you very badly. I'll go to
- 20:36see them as soon as I clear up some other business. Don't worry about
- 20:38me. Did you tell him about Ray Gumby. Yes, they found his
- 20:42body. You have an awful lot of explaining to do. Look, I
- 20:45got another pick up for them, not a body, just a hotel clerk.
- 20:49He's in his room at four to twelve Turk Street. I think it'd
- 20:52be out cold for another ten minutes. I just cocked him. Phone the
- 20:56police and tell him to send somebody out to pick him up. He's part
- 20:57of my story and he'll tell it and tell him to be sure and pick
- 21:00up Swift and Luke for Gumby's killing. Got all that, I think,
- 21:03See you later, Johnny. Take careful. It was dark by the time
- 21:15I arrived at the Skyline Apartments and took the elevator to the fourth floor.
- 21:21The place looked quiet and deserted. It was for the most part, except
- 21:25for Lorraine Julian. She looked about the same time, said Johnny Dallar.
- 21:33Isn't that your name? Yeah? What are you doing here? Didn't you
- 21:40ever expect to see me again? No? You better go. You shouldn't
- 21:45be in here. Headwalk in here. It isn't going to walk in Missus
- 21:48Julian. What do you mean I drop by to tell you you've been double
- 21:52crossed? Where's it? Chilling Winters was gunned in Salt City. Ed Julian
- 22:00was shot to death. Tool. I saw it happen, Missus Julian,
- 22:07some kind of a trick. It isn't so not Ed. You haven't seen
- 22:10the papers that listen to the radio. Then they all have the story by
- 22:12now. Yeah, yeah, all of it. Ed told you to keep
- 22:18me guessing when I came around looking for him, right, yeah, sure,
- 22:23maybe you didn't know, but you were helping Jim Reno put the finger
- 22:26on him. I don't believe you. Ed can't be dead. Maybe they
- 22:30can. Chili Winter is that it was Chili They wanted out of the way.
- 22:33They wanted Chili out of the way. Well, Chili and Ed are
- 22:38out of the way now, and Jim Reno's in command. What a fool,
- 22:44What a fool I've been. I I'd have done anything for him.
- 22:49He has me to catch you, get you to go over to Saul City.
- 22:59There's no way to bring him back, but you can help me get
- 23:03Jim Reno. Oh, how will you sign a statement? Anything? Get
- 23:07some paper? I wrote it while she sat there and helped me fill in
- 23:15the details. How had Julian and Jim Reno planned to get rid of Chili
- 23:19Winters? How ed Julian took Chili over to Salt City with him. How
- 23:23before he left he knew that Ray Gumby had a subpoena out for him,
- 23:26and that I, if tipped off, would eventually wind up in Salt City
- 23:29and be a patsy for the killing of Chili Winters. Only Jim Reno decided
- 23:33he'd be better off if Ed and Chili were both out of the way.
- 23:38You think this will do any good? Can we get Reno for killing it
- 23:42and a Salt City court? No, but it stands a good chance in
- 23:45this town. How about Gumby, Luke and Swift. I know why mister
- 23:51Gummy knew all about the enterprises, there had been any kind of investigations,
- 23:56so they just put him out of the way. Yeah, nice people,
- 24:00that's one trouble. You never usually ask about the people you fall in love
- 24:06with. You just go ahead and do it. We better find a noted
- 24:11republic. I have to turn myself into the police. A lot of things
- 24:15have to be explained to them. I think you better get over the Saul
- 24:19City and explain some things there though, mister Reno, Yeah, hello,
- 24:26Lorraine, that's tricks. You killed ed. Didn't this insurance man tell you
- 24:30that he shot Huh, Well, don't you worry. You got fifty thousand
- 24:37dollars coming to you now you want to thank him fifty A lot of money,
- 24:44Asy, sugar, I'm labler. Blow your head off. You kill
- 24:47dad? Oh, I did it for this fellow. I do kid only
- 24:52room for one guy in our business, and that's me. Kind of figured
- 24:57you'd be here, Della tough man. Come on you and me. We're
- 25:03going back to Saul City. Police said, I want to talk to you.
- 25:07I'm still your patsy. Huh, you're still it, brother. They
- 25:11want you as bad as everywhere I run things. Don't this thing might go
- 25:15off over Raine Yu see no, no, I still I'll call a doctor
- 25:30once. Once you said I look like a nice girl. Tell me that
- 25:37again. Please tell me yeah a nice girl. Expense account. I am
- 25:56twenty one one thousand dollars legal fees to get a lawyer to a explain formally
- 26:00what had happened. Adam twenty two one and thirty dollars Roman Board twenty three

- 26:30will you be back? Well, I'll have to appear his witness against Jim
- 26:34Reno when his case comes up. I am twenty four two bucks two drinks
- 26:45yep for Eleanor and me. Expense account total three and sixty two dollars remarks
- 26:52none, yours truly, Johnny Dollar. Remember there'll be another exciting story of
- 27:10yours truly, Johnny Dollar, beginning next Monday night next week. Proof that
- 27:15a dog's life sometimes isn't so bad. A case that starts out like a
- 27:19lark, just one big joke, but isn't Funny for long join us,
- 27:23Won't you Yours Truly Johnny Dollar? Yours Truly Johnny Dollar is starring Bob Bailey,
- 27:37is transcribed in Hollywood. Written by John Dawson, It is produced and
- 27:41directed by Jack Johnstone. Heard in this week's cast were Barbara Fuller, Gene

- 27:56Be sure to join us on Monday Night, same time and station. Other
- 28:00exciting story of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. Roy Rowan speaking Welcome back, Well.
- 28:45The scene where Johnny passes out pretty intense and I like how I like
- 28:52how he does it, you know, as he's basically just before he set
- 28:59up for the killing of Ed Julian. This is an episode that really does
- 29:04deviate a bit from the main source material. The main source for this episode
- 29:11that sighted is The Man Who Liked Mountains, which we played as our one
- 29:15hundred and seventeenth episode, and some of the main details here in terms of
- 29:22Big Ad going to this city to dodge a private investigator and the detective being
- 29:29set up for the frame, as well as the brutal beatings from the two
- 29:34thugs, all of those right out of that Jeff Reagan story. But there
- 29:40are a lot of changes in here different. For example, in The Man
- 29:44who Liked Mountains, the waitress was gone down Lea, leaving the scene up
- 29:52in the city. Here, obviously she lives, so a little less gratuitous
- 29:59death. There may also be another program that E. Jack Newman, who
- 30:07wrote these under a pseudonym, may be combining in here, because there's probably
- 30:12quite a few of his radio programs that we just don't have in circulation.
- 30:18All right, listener comments and feedback. Johnny emails it and to say het,
- 30:23I've been catching up on Johnny Dollar for the last couple of months and
- 30:26finally got to the Bob Bailey Johnny Dollars. I have to say I haven't
- 30:30been with I haven't been as thrilled with him as I hope, and I
- 30:34think I figured out the reason why Bob Bailey's voice is quite similar to that
- 30:41of Sean Hannity's and won't go into the hole details. He's little less than
- 30:47positive towards mister Hannity. I've not noticed that the similarity Bailey's accents, it's
- 30:53kind of hard for me to place, but Hannity's is much more straight New
- 30:59York City. But I've noticed in some ways there you'll hear people talk in
- 31:07voices and with accents the type of which you don't actually seem to hear very
- 31:14much. And I do wonder why that is in terms of the language.
- 31:22And I think that certain accents, the Southern and the New England, for
- 31:29example, remain pretty strong. Someone I thought it really sounded like Bob Bailey
- 31:34or Wally Meyer. But it's all a matter of perspective. Thanks so much
- 31:38for the comment. Then we have just a simple one word review. Love
- 31:41all the shows from iTunes. All right, Well, that will finish us
- 31:45up for today. We'll be back tomorrow with the line up and then join
- 31:51us on Monday for another Yours Truly Johnny Dollar series, and we'll be back
- 31:57on Friday. Doctor Tim return next week. In the meantime, Sendor comments
