- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Wednesday.
- 0:15It's the 7th of January. Angie, it's good to have your
- 0:18company. Thank you for inviting me into
- 0:20your day, no matter what it looks like.
- 0:23I hope you're doing well. And as we continue reading
- 0:26through the book of Luke together, you are probably
- 0:29noticing these chapters go for a while.
- 0:31And most people, if you ask them which author wrote most of the
- 0:35New Testament, they would say it's Paul for sure.
- 0:40But actually, in terms of the number of words written, it's
- 0:43Luke. Luke and Acts are these
- 0:46incredible books with so much in them, the ministry of Jesus and
- 0:52in the birth of the church, such an important part of our story.
- 0:56And he does not skip any of the good stuff.
- 0:59And today we have another chapter just chock a block full
- 1:03of the most incredible things as Jesus walks and shares and heals
- 1:08and loves and confronts and is confronted.
- 1:12So without any further ado, let us settle in, let us follow with
- 1:17Jesus disciples and hear and see what our Lord and Saviour does.
- 1:21Ah, what a privilege it is to be able to do this with you,
- 1:24friend. You ready?
- 1:26Yeah, me too, Holy Spirit, change us with your words so
- 1:32that we can be more like you, amazed at your love for us.
- 1:38All right, let us read together Luke Chapter 9.
- 1:51One day Jesus called together his 12 disciples and gave them
- 1:55power and authority to cast out all demons and to heal all
- 2:00diseases. Then he sent them out to tell
- 2:03everyone about the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
- 2:07Take nothing for your journey, he instructed them.
- 2:10Don't take a walking stick, a traveller's bag, food, money or
- 2:14even a change of clothes. Wherever you go, stay in the
- 2:18same house until you leave town. And if a town refuses to welcome
- 2:22you, shake its dust from your feet as you leave to show that
- 2:26you have abandoned those people to their fate.
- 2:30So they began their Circuit of the villagers, preaching the
- 2:33good news and healing the sick. When Herod Antipas, the ruler of
- 2:38Galilee, heard about everything Jesus was doing, he was puzzled.
- 2:43Some were saying that John the Baptist had been raised from the
- 2:45dead. Others thought Jesus was Elijah
- 2:48or one of the other prophets risen from the dead.
- 2:51I beheaded John, Herod said. So who is this man about whom I
- 2:57hear such stories? And he kept trying to see him.
- 3:03When the apostles returned, they told Jesus everything they had
- 3:06done. Then he slipped quietly away
- 3:09with them toward the town of Bethsaida.
- 3:13But the crowds found out where he was going, and they followed
- 3:16him. He welcomed them and taught them
- 3:19about the Kingdom of God. And he healed those who were
- 3:22sick. Late in the afternoon the 12
- 3:25disciples came to him and said, send the crowds away to the
- 3:28nearby villages and farms so they can find food and lodging
- 3:32for the night. There is nothing to eat here in
- 3:34this remote place. But Jesus said you feed them but
- 3:39we only have 5 loaves of bread and two fish.
- 3:42They answered. Or are you expecting us to go
- 3:45and buy enough food for this whole crowd for there are about
- 3:485000 men there? Jesus replied, Tell them to sit
- 3:53down in groups of about 50 each. So the people all sat down.
- 3:59Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward
- 4:02heaven and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into
- 4:07pieces, he kept giving the bread and fish to the disciples so
- 4:12they could distribute it to the people.
- 4:14They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward the
- 4:18disciples picked up 12 baskets of leftovers.
- 4:24One day Jesus left the crowds to pray alone.
- 4:27Only his disciples were with him, and he asked them, Who do
- 4:31people say I am? Well, they replied, some say
- 4:35John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say You were
- 4:39one of the other ancient prophets risen from the dead.
- 4:43Then he asked them, But who do you say I am?
- 4:48Peter replied, You are the Messiah sent from God.
- 4:54Jesus warned his disciples not to tell anyone who he was.
- 4:58The Son of Man must suffer many terrible things.
- 5:01He said He will be rejected by the elders, the leading priests,
- 5:05and the teachers of religious law.
- 5:07He will be killed, but on the third day he will be raised from
- 5:11the dead. Then he said to the crowd, If
- 5:15any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your
- 5:18own way. Take up your cross daily and
- 5:21follow me. If you try to hang on to your
- 5:24life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for
- 5:28my sake, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you
- 5:33gain the whole world? But are yourself lost or
- 5:36destroyed? If anyone is ashamed of me and
- 5:39my message, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when
- 5:43he returns in His glory and in the glory of the Father and the
- 5:47holy angels. I tell you the truth, some
- 5:51standing here right now will not die before they see the Kingdom
- 5:55of God. About 8 days later, Jesus took
- 5:59Peter, John, and James up on a mountain to pray, and as he was
- 6:04praying, the appearance of his face was transformed and his
- 6:08clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly two men, Moses and
- 6:13Elijah, appeared and began talking with Jesus.
- 6:17They were glorious to see and they were speaking about his
- 6:21exodus from this world which was about to be fulfilled in
- 6:24Jerusalem. Peter and the others had fallen
- 6:27asleep. When they woke up, they saw
- 6:30Jesus, Glory, and the two men standing with him.
- 6:34As Moses and Elijah were starting to leave, Peter, not
- 6:37even knowing what he was saying, blurted out.
- 6:40Master, it's wonderful for us to be here.
- 6:43Let's make 3 shelters as memorials, one for you, one for
- 6:46Moses, and 1:00 for Elijah. But even as he was saying this,
- 6:51a cloud overshadowed them and terror gripped them as the cloud
- 6:55covered them. Then a voice from the cloud
- 6:58said, This is my son, my chosen one, Listen to him.
- 7:05When the voice finished, Jesus was there alone.
- 7:09They didn't tell anyone at that time what they had seen.
- 7:15The next day, after they'd come down the mountain, the large
- 7:18crowd met Jesus. A man in the crowd called out to
- 7:21him. Teacher, I beg you to look at my
- 7:24son, my only child. An evil spirit keeps seizing
- 7:28him, making him scream. He throws him into convulsions
- 7:32so that he foams at the mouth. It batters him and hardly ever
- 7:36leaves him alone. I begged your disciples to cast
- 7:39out the Spirit, but they couldn't do it.
- 7:42Jesus said. You faithless and corrupt
- 7:45people, how long must I be with you and put up with you?
- 7:50Then he said to the man, Bring your son here.
- 7:54As the boy came forward, the demon knocked him to the ground
- 7:57and threw him into a violent convulsion.
- 8:00But Jesus rebuked the evil spirit and healed the boy.
- 8:04Then he gave him back to his Father.
- 8:07Or grip the people as they saw this majestic display of God's
- 8:11power. While everyone was marvelling at
- 8:14everything he was doing, Jesus said to his disciples, Listen to
- 8:19me and remember what I say. The Son of Man is going to be
- 8:24betrayed into the hands of his enemies.
- 8:27But they didn't know what he meant.
- 8:28It's significance was hidden from them, so they couldn't
- 8:31understand it and they were afraid to ask Him about it.
- 8:36Then his disciples began arguing about which of them was the
- 8:39greatest. But Jesus knew their thoughts,
- 8:42so he brought a little child to his side.
- 8:44Then he said to them, anyone who welcomes a little child like
- 8:48this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me also
- 8:54welcomes my father who sent me. Whoever is the least among you
- 8:58is the greatest, John said to Jesus, Master, we saw someone
- 9:05using your name to cast out demons, but we told him to stop
- 9:09because he isn't in our group. But Jesus said, don't stop him.
- 9:13Anyone who is not against you is for you.
- 9:18As the time drew near for him to ascend to heaven, Jesus
- 9:22resolutely set out for Jerusalem.
- 9:25He sent messengers ahead to a Samaritan village to prepare for
- 9:28his arrival. But the people of the village
- 9:30did not welcome Jesus because he was on his way to Jerusalem.
- 9:34When James and John saw this, they said to Jesus, Lord, should
- 9:39we call down fire from heaven to burn them up?
- 9:42But Jesus turned and rebuked them, so they went on to another
- 9:46village. As they were walking along,
- 9:49someone said to Jesus, I will follow you wherever you go.
- 9:53But Jesus replied, foxes have dens to live in, and birds have
- 9:57nests, but the Son of man has no place even to lay his head.
- 10:03He said to another person, Come follow me.
- 10:07The man agreed, but he said, Lord, first let me return home
- 10:10and bury my father. Jesus told him, let the
- 10:14spiritually dead bury their own dead.
- 10:17Your duty is to go and preach about the Kingdom of God.
- 10:21Another said, yes Lord, I will follow you, but first let me say
- 10:25goodbye to my family. But Jesus told him, anyone who
- 10:30puts a hand on the plough and then looks back is not fit for
- 10:33the Kingdom of God. Jesus, thank you for all that
- 10:48you are and all that you teach us.
- 10:51Thank you for the fact that everything that you do and say
- 10:55you do on this trajectory, walking toward Jerusalem,
- 10:59walking toward that final moment where you give up everything out
- 11:04of love for us. And while much of this teaching
- 11:08sounds hard, like not being able to bury their father or not
- 11:11being able to say goodbye to their family, Lord, you make the
- 11:14point that it's your Kingdom that is the most important
- 11:17thing, far above anything else. And so, Lord, I pray that you
- 11:22change the eyes of our heart, that as we see the world around
- 11:27us, we would not see it in the way that the world does.
- 11:30That we would not be pushing for our own glory and our own
- 11:34successes, but that we would see your Kingdom as the greatest
- 11:38thing that we could ever strive toward.
- 11:42And that in fact, it's those that the world would rate as the
- 11:46least who are the greatest in your Kingdom.
- 11:50So Lord, help us daily give up our desire for greatness here in
- 11:55our lives on earth and desire greatness in your Kingdom,
- 12:00because greatness in your Kingdom is your glorifying and
- 12:04your greatness. And so we displace you at the
- 12:08pinnacle of our lives, and we worship you, Jesus, and we give
- 12:12our lives once again as a living sacrifice for you.
- 12:14And we pray all of this in your wonderful name, Amen.
