- 0:51if you've not already, to pick up your copy of What Made the
- 0:54Golden Age Shine? I gotta ask quite a bit why someone so relatively young
- 1:00was interested in the Golden Age of entertainment and what made the Golden Age Shine.
- 1:03Takes a look at what makes the Golden Age of entertainment so special and
- 1:08worthwhile. It is available as an ebook for ninety nine cents in the Kindle
- 1:14Store, the eyebook Store, and the Nook Store as well well. Now
- 1:18it's time for today's episode of Nick Carter, and we once again have three
- 1:22lost episodes between last week's show and this week's. So here now from September
- 1:27fifteenth of nineteen forty six is the Case of the Blue Mink and all for
- 1:37today's thrilling Nick Carter adventure. The case is of Blooming presented by All Dutch
- 1:42Glass. Our story opens Nick and PASTI are entering a large department store very
- 1:48early in the morning. I didn't know you were attained by the Fur particular
- 1:52Association. Soon you've probably forgotten Past here. It's been years since they've had
- 1:56occasion to call on it. Oh, this new series of Firth that's is
- 1:59really serious. And you think this department store is the best place to catch
- 2:02up with them. I do, except for the biggest losses of any store
- 2:06in town so far. Come on, here's the elevator. Oh poor,
- 2:09please. And you think I'll be able to spot if I see one?
- 2:13I hope. So. As a rule, women with steel furs had a
- 2:16large receptacle of some kind, the bag or bundle, in which they can
- 2:20hide the furs while they make their getaway. Also, they have a sort
- 2:23of shifty look about them. You watch closely. You've had a lot more
- 2:27experience with the crooks and more sales girls. I hope you're right. I'll
- 2:30try anyway. All right, come on, this is a pretty good one.
- 2:36Miss Cheryl. The detective on this floor said she that's right, you're
- 2:39miss Cheryl. Yes, And this is his bo who's going to be a
- 2:44new sales girl. Oh well for a while. Anyway. I only hope
- 2:47I can make good. I'm sure I hope so too. Now you'll come
- 2:52with these go and I'll sure you ready to leave the thing? Oh just
- 2:54a minute, miss Cheryl. Me suppose I see a customer who looks suspicious?
- 3:00What do I do? Call Miss Cheryl? If you can and call
- 3:01me, then keep your eyes open and don't leave the customer for a second.
- 3:06That you can help it. All right, Nick, I hope this
- 3:07works. Push me luck. That's huger common sense, Patsy. That's always
- 3:10better than luck. So long, Nick Carter speaking Nick. This is Patsy.
- 3:27Ah, Patsy, how do you like being a clerk at the department
- 3:29store? And now that you've had a full day of it, Nick,
- 3:30I think maybe I have one of those thirties here Now she's got a big
- 3:34bundle, just the way you said, and she's acting queer. Where are
- 3:37you calling from? I'm using the phone right here in the fur department.
- 3:39She can see me, but she can't hear what I'm saying. Anyone else
- 3:42there? No the other girl who's usually here at this time. I had
- 3:45to leave early, went home at four thirty and I can't find miss Cheryl
- 3:49anywhere. There's just this one customer here, and she's she's acting awful suspicious.
- 3:53All right, Patsy here for you do. Start her alonglet her see
- 3:57everything in the place, but keep her there until I got uh huh.
- 4:00What does she look like? Well, she's a rather large woman dressed in
- 4:02a brown suit and dark red hat with a yellowish sort of primming on.
- 4:06It. Has a big bundle down up and wrapping paper and small bundle and
- 4:11a handbag. Oh, she has a largela pel pin in the form of
- 4:14a horse's head. I ought to recognize her from manuscription. I'll be there
- 4:16in five minutes. Never look at it. Maybe I'll know her when I
- 4:18see her, right, Nick, goodbye waiting on me. Miss. I'm
- 4:24sorry to keep you waiting. I was trying to get some other fur pieces
- 4:28brought over from my warehouse. They just got some new ones in in their
- 4:30beauties. Do you like anything you've seen so far? Ned? But I
- 4:35want something more expensive. Well, I suppose you look around and see if
- 4:40you find anything that suits you better. I think I will. You don't
- 4:43need to wait. I'll let you know if i'll find it is. Oh,
- 4:46that's quite all right, I have nothing else to do. Oh nice,
- 4:49I'll tell you what I really like. When I was coming in the
- 4:53stall this afternoon, I saw just the next piece I wanted in the left
- 4:57hand main window. Do you suppose you could get it for me? I'm
- 5:00sorry, madam, but I'm not supposed to leave the deparm But that's exactly
- 5:02what I want. Won't you please see if I can take a look at
- 5:05it. As you can see, madam, there's no other girl here to
- 5:08watch the stock. I couldn't leave just now, but there are no all
- 5:11the customers either. Couldn't you make an exception just this one? I'm sorry,
- 5:15madam. Isn't there something here that would suit you as well? You're
- 5:18a smart girl, aren't you smart? For your own good? This time?
- 5:23How do you mean, Matt? Just this? Oh? Won If
- 5:45Patsy's just taken about this woman, Nick, he could be you know,
- 5:48I doubt if you'd call me well unless you were sure of the fact at
- 5:53it. But you know women always hat Yes, what are you stopping for
- 6:02me? That's the woman pats A call about it? You sure, I
- 6:04am? The description misses exactly? Come on, Nikki, you you can
- 6:09arrest her without some kind of evidence. I'm not going to arrestler. Well,
- 6:11no, we're going to follow her. I want to find out where
- 6:13she goes we didn't watch. Then I'll find some excuse to take a look
- 6:15into that bundle she's carrying. Uness, I'm greatly mistaken. They're firs stolen
- 6:18furs. When you look at that line at the ticket window, I've never
- 6:32knew so many people went to the offer just fifteen half an hour before the
- 6:38performance starts. So why in the world you had to get us down here
- 6:41so early? I can't see. Well, I had to be here to
- 6:43see if that woman walks through this lobby, Miss Boone. And suppose we're
- 6:46wrong about this, oh, missen mis Sheryl, How can we be wrong?
- 6:49It was right after that woman left that we found that water gum folded
- 6:53up in this envelope? Didn't we right where she was standing when she knocked
- 6:56me out? And it wasn't there before? Yes, that's true, but
- 7:00we don't really know. It's a ticket broker's envelope. And cause the four
- 7:03seats for tonight's performance here at the opera, don't we yes? And with
- 7:06the tickets that we're in. This envelope belong to her. She'll be here
- 7:11tonight and I'll recognize him. Oh I wish mister Cotter went here. Oh
- 7:16so do I. But I've been calling in for the past three hours and
- 7:20no answer. What's even Wodo's gone? So we've got to find out for
- 7:26ourselves who's sitting in R two, four, six and eight. I guess
- 7:29you're right, miss Bowen, But don't you worry. We'll work it out
- 7:33somehow. Oh look at that gorgeous for a coat on that girl just going
- 7:41in. It's blue, it's blooming. That's all blooming. That was stolen
- 7:47from our store. Are you sure? Certainly? I am. It's the
- 7:50only one in this city. There are only three of them in the world,
- 7:54and the other do are privately owner the West coast of bed Nuts.
- 7:56A little girl wearing it couldn't be a third room. She's got off,
- 8:00That's all I know. We've got to get inside and get back. Yes,
- 8:03but how about nothing I'm going in the label? Oh no, it
- 8:09won't. The first thing a thief does is to change the lining and the
- 8:13label. You've got to be sure before you accuse her. But I am
- 8:16sure, that's cool. In a minute, where she's sitting in R four,
- 8:22one of the seats, looked on the envelope. Ooh, she's a
- 8:26thief, but she's not the one who was in the store. We've got
- 8:28to wait here and see who sits in those other three seats. Then we
- 8:33can capture them all at once. We've been following this deal through all these
- 8:48little towns for a heck of a while. Now do you think she's gone
- 8:50anywhere? Either she's taking a very roundabout way to where she's going, or
- 8:54she knows we're following her, and I am going to see where she goes.
- 8:58And it takes all night. The whole first act is over, and
- 9:13nobody is in those other three seats, and I'm not going to wait me
- 9:15longer. I want that. Wait. She's going into the lobby and she's
- 9:20leaving the coat my seat. Let's go down and casually take it, take
- 9:28it? What about her? We want her to come on? Follow me?
- 9:31I have an idea. But easy now, and no, no,
- 9:35don't hurry now, let's just sit down here in these end seats. I
- 9:41don't like this. I don't like it either, but I think it's the
- 9:43best way well, now what, we'll get up and the coke goes with
- 9:52us. What this nobody's watching. You've got more news than anybody. I
- 10:00have a saw. And now walk up the aisle slowly, don't hurry.
- 10:03Yeah, that's you. See that girl who had the coat. Yes,
- 10:09she's over there, the drinks dead. If she should you won't come over
- 10:15here behind this pillar. Now here's my idea. She must be one of
- 10:20the thieves, but she's not the one I want. You take the code
- 10:22back of the store and I'll wait here and follow her after the show.
- 10:26Maybe she'll take me to the rest of the game. But she'll make a
- 10:28wheel of a fuss. On't you find out? Like a coat's gone?
- 10:31Which is stolen code, isn't it? So let me look at the label.
- 10:35Oh, this is a parent's label. There never was a blooming coat
- 10:39made in Paris. That's what I told you. The thieves change the label,
- 10:43so it must be the coat stolen from your store. Now you go
- 10:46ahead and i'll hold you. Want to stay healthy, you just walk quietly
- 10:50after the one on the left. Don't look around. Hey, you can't
- 10:56walk run, I'll be right behind you. Come on, that'sy bell of
- 11:00walks. Here's sir, I guess we better. That's it? Ah,
- 11:11you see that dark blue sid dianapuste a little way. The tall girl gets
- 11:15in the front seat, the short one gets in fact, no argument.
- 11:18Where where are you taking us? You'll find out by and by when you
- 11:22do your more like it. I got movie. In the case of the
- 11:33Blue Mink Patsy, together with ras Ali Errol, though detective for a big
- 11:37department store, recovered a blue mink coat which had been stolen from the store
- 11:41while Nick and Waller were on the trail of a suspected purpeep. But just
- 11:46as the girl got the coat back, they were pounced into a strange car
- 11:50at the point of a gun, bound for an unknown destination. The time
- 11:54is now a few minutes after intermission. Sergeant Matheson of the Metropolitan Police has
- 12:00just arrived at the office of the off the House and answer to a summer
- 12:03The coat is a beautiful blue fur coat. Look, mister hell By,
- 12:11and I can't make heads and tails out of this. Watch this blue fur
- 12:13coach. He keeps talking about. I don't know sort you're gonna mention.
- 12:18After the first accident order when this girl says a ball. You can hear
- 12:20three blocks of women. Yeah, here's we can make out you had a
- 12:24blue fur coat that disappear. She's been practicing stics ever sad. Remember you
- 12:28could get the story out of it. There's some job you wish you on
- 12:31me? All right? Here? What's your name? Bomb Wood? All
- 12:37right, gus? See what happened? I have a loop circle. I
- 12:43go outside to get a drink too. When I go back, it's gone.
- 12:48And she was kidding me. A you mean the coat was stolen?
- 12:52No, no, no, I do not feel it. No no,
- 12:58no, no, I don't mean that. Did somebody steal it from you?
- 13:01Yes? They steal it? And we need more? Did you see
- 13:07who tuk it? No good? I got to get a here before,
- 13:13but I couldn't get away from a pussy old game up front. I'll say
- 13:18there is just when intermission is about half over. I saw a man forced
- 13:22two girls to walk out of the lobby and get into a bluesy dan park
- 13:24just down the buck, and I could see you had a gun in his
- 13:26pocket, and I heard him say, when you find out where you're going,
- 13:30you won't like it. All right? Wait a minute, Wait a
- 13:31minute, you're sure of this. Yes, yes, I'm the dorman here.
- 13:35You know, I was downing just outside. I heard it, as
- 13:37friends, I can hear you out. Kind of a man was he?
- 13:39He was, well, he was an ordinary man, like a businessman on
- 13:46a pretty hot boil, he was. And one of the girls had a
- 13:48blue firt coat with it, a blue coat. Did you say bluefirt coat?
- 13:52Yeah, that's what I said. Why so two girls stole Gussie's coat?
- 13:56Then somebody stole them, and you're described these girls? Oh, yes,
- 14:01yes, it's one of them. Was the sort of a Yeah,
- 14:13I want that description of the two girls sent out to all precincts at once.
- 14:16Yes, sir, let me know as soon as anyone gets a lead
- 14:20on them. Yes, sir, I want my school. Now. Look
- 14:24here, Gussie, I brought you down here to headquarters so I could talk
- 14:28to your quiet like without nobody button in. Now, where'd you get that
- 14:31coach you had? Oh? Please, mister, I do not see it?
- 14:35Oh hello, Nick, what you got there? Bunch of fir all
- 14:39stolen? Patsy called me from the department store where I planted her and told
- 14:43me a customer she had was acting funny. Yeah, the world when I
- 14:46started down to have a look at this woman. I met her coming out
- 14:48of the store. I recognized her from passy description and followed it. She
- 14:52led us write to the old factory building where they remodeled the stolen furs.
- 14:56I found the workmen they're realigning the coach and brought them both in. Nice
- 15:00Nick, say, you're on a stolen per case yourself, right, Nick?
- 15:03One with a twist to it? What the twist? Well, it
- 15:05seems that Gussie wore this blue furd of the opera and a couple of girls
- 15:09stole it from her and some fellow the dorman says was hanging around before pulls
- 15:13the gun on the two dames and forces them into his car. Looked as
- 15:16if he was waiting for him. Any descriptions of the man girls, Yeah,
- 15:20the dormant at the opera saw the whole thing. One of the girls
- 15:22is about forty five, short, kind of blonde, gray hair, blue
- 15:26eyes, wore a dark blue suit without a chaw. But you know what,
- 15:31Nick, The description of the other girl fit Patsy. But hi,
- 15:33George, I believe it worried it you think it was? Mate? Heavens
- 15:37Patsy and miss Cheryl a f lord detective at the Star doing a little detecting
- 15:41on their own. Man, it may be in trouble, real trouble.
- 15:45I remember now, as Cheryl told me, a blue mink cork was stolen
- 15:48from the store a couple of weeks ago. Somehow they got on the trail
- 15:52of it, and someone got on that trail. We've got to find out
- 15:54about this in a hurry. Gussie, Who's cork was it? Do?
- 15:58I got the ged you she killed me? Show you certainly do? Gotta
- 16:02tell me and quick? It was the lady how it hurts for she always
- 16:07gets smooth for coats all the time. So I just took this Wonterpool the
- 16:15up all with anybody home when you left. It was the littest girl,
- 16:18Virginia. She maybe you could see me. Did you know where father mother
- 16:22were tonight? Oh? Yes, her mother left her the telephone numbers.
- 16:26It was in Oakdale. Yeah. What are you gonna do? Nick?
- 16:30Find out if it is Virginia called her mother to tell her Gussie's taking a
- 16:33coat from what Gussie says today life that she did to go out with a
- 16:37coat. Yeah, but Nick, I read this is Nick Carter. I
- 16:41want to find out if a call was made tonight from the Tutton residence and
- 16:45Cedar Ridge to some place in Oakdale. Here's that right? For the love
- 16:49of Pete, Nick, what's the connection between this kid and a guy kidnapped
- 16:53and Patsy looked? Maddy Gussie said, Missus Dutton was always getting new fur
- 16:56coats, didn't see. Yeah, well that looks like part of the fur
- 17:00gang. So if this kid phoned her mother that Guessie was wearing her new
- 17:03fur coat, her father was probably the head of the gang. Drove into
- 17:06town as fast as he could to get it back before it was spotted as
- 17:07a stolen coat. Why sure got to the opera house after the show started,
- 17:11so he hung around. That would a dormant saw it? Yeah,
- 17:15I probably missed Guessie in the crowded in a mission, but saw Patsy and
- 17:18miss Cheer, so he took them and the coat, which is what he
- 17:21really wanted. Well for the day. Wait wait, wait, what's that?
- 17:23Operator? Other was about seven fifteen? Thank you, that's all.
- 17:32See Dunton got to call her on seven fifteen. He could have driven down
- 17:37on about an hour and a half. They should get him to the opera
- 17:40house after the show started chicks. Yeah, but look, Dick, if
- 17:42Dunton has got the girls, he certainly wouldn't take them to his home.
- 17:47And where would he take him? And what would he do with him?
- 17:49Matters that we've got to figure out and fast. What did dirty old place
- 18:03business? It was going to lock us up somewhere. He might have picked
- 18:07a pleasanter place in this. We well, maybe we could figure out some
- 18:11scheme to let somebody know if we can comes back in this. Huh,
- 18:18what do you tell somebody else about the coat? Did you? No?
- 18:22Yes, yes we did right after we found it. And hold you tell
- 18:26speak up. I called Nick Carter and gave him all the detail. I
- 18:32thought, So somebody's been here and taken all the first and worn't in a
- 18:34storage fall in the basement with my tailor away too. Just call his home
- 18:38and they haven't seen him. Do know what's happened to him? Why did
- 18:41you tell this? Carter? And no funny business? Oh well you see
- 18:45we we told them. How soon you stop stalling? If you want to
- 18:48live a while longer, give us the details and make it snappy. Well,
- 18:52the girl had the coat of the offer. Do this your names?
- 18:55And when I called him. I told him your names and where you live?
- 18:59Where do I get my hands on that? Gussie? I'll ring a
- 19:00netlick was a chicken stealing my cocon clap and everything she knows? But what
- 19:04do we do now? Eddie think? Yeah, I have it, young
- 19:11lady. You're gonna call you Nick Carter on the phone. There's an old
- 19:15abandoned hunting shack out in the woods about two miles off Root forty seven.
- 19:19You're gonna tell him you've caught the first evening that you're stuck on. While
- 19:32Nick is conferring with Maddie at headquarters, walders it in Nick's office, waiting
- 19:36for the next development in the case. Nick got his office, Nick got
- 19:41his first assistant to Waldo McGlenn speaking is Nick and Walder. This is Patsy.
- 19:45Oh no, Patsy, he ain't. Can I help you put him
- 19:48on? Will you? I tell you? Nick ain't here? Do you
- 19:52want to go? Nick? Oh? I'm so glad you're there. Nick.
- 19:56This is Nick. It's all right. We've caught the first these we
- 19:59were after. But this ain't Nick. Patsy carefully, very carefully, this
- 20:03is extremely important. You must be crazy for namelessness. We chase the thieves
- 20:07way out of town in the Cheryl's car, and just as we finally caught
- 20:11up with them, we ran out of gas. Nick, I want you
- 20:14to come out and bring us all back to town. I don't dare leave
- 20:18the thieves look for any gas because they might get away. But we caught
- 20:21them thieves. We'll get these directions straight, Nick, better write them down.
- 20:26Write them down now. We're near an old hunting shack on a small
- 20:30side road that turns off Route forty seven, about three miles north of Woodmere
- 20:37North. You got that, yeah? Yeah. The shack is about two
- 20:41miles in off the main road. We'll be waiting for you inside the shack.
- 20:45Hurry up, will you, Nick. It's awful lonely out here.
- 20:49Hurry. He's offul worried about you. Yes, about two miles. But
- 20:55we caught them, Nick, palloluja. We caught the Brooks five. Well,
- 21:00if that ain't the crazy I gotta get this to Nick immediate here.
- 21:06Hell lujah, caught the crooks' the sities. This is Wado. He's Nick
- 21:14here. Yeah, sure, hold on here and nugget swallow. Nick,
- 21:19I just got the dog gone. This message from Patsy, passy, where
- 21:23I keep your shirt hand while I tell you this is She kept calling me
- 21:26nick. I told her it was Waldo. But what did she say?
- 21:30She said she got the thieves and ran out of gas in an old hunting
- 21:34sad about two miles out on a small road that turned off Route forty seven,
- 21:38about three miles above Woodmean, and she's waiting there for you. Is
- 21:42there anything else that's hard? Do you know how she ended up? Well?
- 21:47Naturally not? What was it? She says? Hallelujah, we caught
- 21:51the crooks. Hallelujah. You sure sure? I'm sure? I et deef
- 21:55you know. Thanks Walldo, goodbye, Grab your hat and your gun,
- 21:57Marry, we're going places. You're sure the whole thing is a frame up?
- 22:11Cars, I am mad. I told you. When Patty wants me
- 22:12to know she's in trouble, she uses the word hallelujaes I'm we're in the
- 22:15conversation. We set that up years ago. Probably the guy who kidnapped her
- 22:18Meters sent the message exactly. He thinks he set a trap for us and
- 22:22that we'll walk into it. Well, we'll string the trap on him.
- 22:26That's dead. It was about time for a friend. Carter to her,
- 22:37rhyme, all the lights you changed your plan. Let the car stop out
- 22:45the shank. When I start walking in, I'll freaking them off. A
- 22:48chance with this moon and I can see them. You are you all right?
- 23:02She was going to kill us after he shut you? Hey, you
- 23:04shut up, shut up with you. I about the guy. That's pretty
- 23:08bad, Maddy. How do you live to pay that penalty? I'm happy
- 23:11to say. And after I finished talking to you, or rather in the
- 23:25world, though, he took us to that shack to wait. Oh,
- 23:29Nick, I was scared. She certainly welcome to call, but not so
- 23:32much on her own account. She was afraid that you might I was afraid
- 23:36somebody might get hurt, maybe killed, and I didn't want it to be
- 23:41the wrong person. Well that's how comm Oh just think if Gussie hadn't borrowed
- 23:47the blooming Patsy and I might not be he oh please, that's not exactly
- 23:52a cheerful thought. Actually, there's one thing I still don't understand. When
- 23:56you two found that ticket broker's envelope with the Saints marked on it, why
- 23:59didn't you go to the police and that are trying to handle it? Yourself.
- 24:00Well, well, to tell the truth, Nick, I just didn't
- 24:03think of it. I suppose it's because well, as a rule, we

- 24:22Carter Master Detective, produced and directed by John McGregor, is a copyrighted feature
- 24:26by Sweet and Smith's Publications Incorporated. Lon Clark has starred as Nick, with
- 24:30Charlotte Manson featured as Patsy. Matty is played by Ed Latimer, waldo by
- 24:36Humphrey Davis. Script written by John McGregor, storylined by Peggy Mayer. This

- 24:48A case that really gets Patsy involved is a lot of fun and I enjoyed
- 24:55this as the case got worked from both hands. Of course, of course,

- 25:04crooks would notice. But in this case we're able to work it in in
- 25:12a way that was, I guess believable enough. Well, now we turn
- 25:17to listener comments and feedback and we have a new review in the iTunes store.
- 25:22Music Lover seven to one two rights. I'm a big fan of this
