Latest / How To Protect The Ocean / US Government Rolls Back Environmental Protections for Energy Drilling
Transcript
- 0:02Just when I thought the last episode I
- 0:04did was bad enough where I talked about
- 0:06opening up marine protected
- 0:07areas in the US to fisheries,
- 0:10now we have opening up and rolling back
- 0:12regulations, all regulations, as many as
- 0:15possible, to ensure that
- 0:17energy needs can be met in the US.
- 0:20We're going to talk about why this is
- 0:21such a bad idea and why I'm not surprised
- 0:24again of the rollback of regulations by
- 0:26this administration,
- 0:27but what it can do on this episode of the
- 0:29How to Protect the Ocean
- 0:30podcast. Let's start the show.
- 0:35Hey everybody, welcome back to another
- 0:37exciting episode of the How to Protect
- 0:38the Ocean podcast. I'm
- 0:39your host, Andrew Bowen.
- 0:40And this is the podcast where you find
- 0:41out what's happening with the ocean, how
- 0:43you can speak up for the ocean,
- 0:44and what you can do to live for a better
- 0:46ocean by taking action.
- 0:48I am here out of my office and in sunny
- 0:51Negril, Jamaica on vacation with my
- 0:53family and some friends.
- 0:54I have a lovely time here. It is
- 0:56beautiful. This beach
- 0:57is absolutely amazing.
- 0:59I'll share some pictures as we go through
- 1:02this B roll here as I'm talking.
- 1:04But today we're going to be talking about
- 1:06the rollbacks that have come back, come
- 1:08through on the White House website,
- 1:11where we're talking this rollback of all
- 1:14regulations that have to do with impeding
- 1:18the development of
- 1:19energy needs for the US,
- 1:21including oil drilling and natural gas
- 1:23drilling. This has been a contentious
- 1:25issue for a long time before Donald Trump
- 1:28got in the first time
- 1:29and for a long time.
- 1:31There's a reason why a lot of these
- 1:33regulations have been put into place. The
- 1:35Marine Mammal Protection Act and others,
- 1:36Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, a lot of
- 1:39these different mags and Stevenson's Act.
- 1:41All these regulations have been put into
- 1:43place to protect the environment because
- 1:45in the past in the 70s, especially when a
- 1:47lot of these were put in, we started to
- 1:49see a decline in fisheries.
- 1:51We started to see in fish stocks, we
- 1:53started to see a decline in marine
- 1:54mammals in general and even like large
- 1:57sharks and so forth.
- 1:58So putting together all those protections
- 2:01brought back the sharks like the great
- 2:03white shark brought back a lot of the
- 2:05fish that would ensure that sea lines
- 2:09were able to be fed and marine mammals were able to be fed.
- 2:10And they could prosper and that's what
- 2:13brought the great white sharks back along
- 2:15the west coast anyway.
- 2:16And so when we see regulations like this
- 2:19be rolled back, we forget the past. We
- 2:21forget why they were
- 2:22put in the first place.
- 2:23And now with energy needs being so high,
- 2:26especially with this US administration
- 2:27with their drill baby drill type of
- 2:30motto, they don't care about environment.
- 2:32They just want the least amount of
- 2:33regulations. And this will happen. I've
- 2:35explained the last episode. This is what
- 2:36happens with developers
- 2:37is they want to go fast.
- 2:40They want to move as quickly as possible
- 2:42to satisfy their investors and they want
- 2:44to make as much money as possible.
- 2:45They don't care what gets in their way,
- 2:47especially with the environment. We've
- 2:48seen that with oil companies
- 2:49before. They just don't care.
- 2:51They know that oil spills are a part of
- 2:53their business plan and they are OK with
- 2:56it and they just don't care.
- 2:58And it's frustrating as someone who loves
- 3:01the ocean so much, someone who loves the
- 3:02planet so much, anyone of you probably
- 3:04say, hey, you know what, this sucks.
- 3:06This is not fun to see. And it's not fun
- 3:09to see any of this happen, which is why
- 3:11it's so important to vote and to
- 3:12understand who you're voting for and to
- 3:15make sure that you're voting for the
- 3:16right people that are going
- 3:17to protect the environment.
- 3:18Doesn't matter. Each side of the aisle
- 3:20has people that want to protect the
- 3:22ocean, want to protect the environment.
- 3:24They're hunters, they're fishers. They
- 3:26enjoy the environment just like anybody
- 3:28else. Their kids enjoy the environment.
- 3:30But we need to vote for the same people,
- 3:32right, for the people that want to
- 3:34protect the environment and understand
- 3:35that you can develop the economy and you
- 3:38can protect the economy as
- 3:39well as protect the ocean.
- 3:42Right. It's really that simple and
- 3:43protect the planet. However, we just seem
- 3:45to divorce the two every single time and
- 3:48it sucks. It sucks to see.
- 3:50But this is what's going to happen
- 3:51essentially now, the way they're doing
- 3:53it. And I'll link to the website where
- 3:55this information can be found.
- 3:57But essentially, you're looking at a way
- 4:00of sun setting these regulations. So not
- 4:03just eliminating the regulations
- 4:04outright, but essentially every five
- 4:06years, they will be these regulations,
- 4:08environmental regulations, especially get
- 4:10in the way of energy will be reviewed by
- 4:12the federal department and which is in
- 4:15charge of this type of regulation.
- 4:17So say the Marine Mail Protection Act
- 4:19will be monitored by, I believe it's NOAA
- 4:21or some division within NOAA on a
- 4:24vacation here. I haven't done all the
- 4:25research. I've just tried to
- 4:26react to this type of news.
- 4:29But regardless, they'll roll back every
- 4:30five years. They'll wonder, hey, is this
- 4:32really worth it? Is this going to be in
- 4:34the way of other regulations? Do we allow
- 4:37it to continue for another five years? Do
- 4:39we revisit it in five years?
- 4:42Do we make it stronger or roll back some
- 4:44of those regulations to allow for maybe
- 4:46we'll protect a little bit of the marine
- 4:48mammals that are not in the way of energy
- 4:50needs and which is drilling and so and
- 4:52seismic surveys to for oil exploration or
- 4:55do we just let it go?
- 4:57Do we just not renew it? That's the case
- 4:59every five years for these environmental
- 5:01regulations, which is very difficult.
- 5:03Now, there are some stipulations. I
- 5:05believe the Clean Water and Clean Air Act
- 5:08cannot be just taken away
- 5:10by executive order alone.
- 5:11There are some legal frameworks within
- 5:13there. And I'm sure there's some other
- 5:15legal frameworks with other protections.
- 5:17But there is somebody that can be taken
- 5:19out through this executive order. And
- 5:20they will be looking at Endangered
- 5:22Species Act, Max and Stevenson's Act,
- 5:24Marine Mail Protection Act.
- 5:25These all can be rolled back or
- 5:28deregulated. And just based on who's in
- 5:31charge of each department, I wouldn't be
- 5:33surprised to see this happen within the
- 5:36next any amount of years, even next few
- 5:39months, who knows? It doesn't mean that
- 5:41every five years, I think it's a maximum
- 5:43of five years. It sounds like each of
- 5:45these regulations can be visited at any
- 5:47point within those five years. So, you
- 5:49know, be ready, be ready to see some of
- 5:52these regulations go down very quickly.
- 5:54Or be reviewed very quickly within the
- 5:57next few months. It seems like this
- 5:59organization is this administration is
- 6:01moving very, very quickly. And guess
- 6:03who's in charge of looking after this
- 6:05doge Department of Government Efficiency,
- 6:08I think is what it's called. But doge is
- 6:09in charge. So they're going to lead with
- 6:11the department in question that has
- 6:13managed the regulation and they're going
- 6:15to decide whether this is going to be in
- 6:17the way and slow down the process of oil
- 6:19exploration and oil drilling. And this is
- 6:22what's going to happen for the next five years.
- 6:23And this is what's going to happen for
- 6:23the next at least four years unless
- 6:25midterms can change some things. But this
- 6:28is what's going to happen. And we need to
- 6:29hear your voice. This is where it counts
- 6:32for all the American citizens that want
- 6:34to change and want to make sure that the
- 6:37environment your ocean is protected and
- 6:39the animals that live within is
- 6:40protected. This is your chance to stand
- 6:42up to a government that wants to
- 6:44deregulate, wants to defund a lot of
- 6:47environmental initiatives. And this is
- 6:49just not cool. We just need
- 6:50to make sure that we stop this.
- 6:52I'm not an American citizen, but
- 6:54definitely want this to stop. And I don't
- 6:57want these regulations, the hard work
- 6:59that a lot of people put in to protect
- 7:00the ocean to protect the environment. I
- 7:03don't want to see this happen where it's
- 7:06all this work, all this funding, all this
- 7:08protection of the ocean
- 7:10goes out by the wayside.
- 7:12And we're going to see degradation and
- 7:14rain protected areas have been opened up,
- 7:15like as I mentioned in the last episode.
- 7:17And now we're going to start to see it
- 7:19get worse. Right. We're going to start to
- 7:21see, you know, the Remap Protection Act
- 7:23that maybe disappear. Some of the
- 7:25Magnuson-Stevens Act, rollbacks, a lot of
- 7:28regulations either deregulated or roll
- 7:31back or gutted. It is going to be gutting
- 7:33just to see how this portrays in the
- 7:35future. Short term gain, right? Not
- 7:38looking for long term prosperity.
- 7:40And so we'll see what happens, but I'd
- 7:42love to hear what you think. I'd love to
- 7:44hear your thoughts on this. Do you think
- 7:46that we should be deregulating every one
- 7:48of these protections and every one of
- 7:50these regulations? Do you think we should
- 7:51get rid of them? Do you think most of
- 7:53them will be sunsetted after a while?
- 7:54They'll just be like, hey, we're done. We
- 7:56want to make sure we can drill.
- 7:58The disappointing part here is the fact
- 8:00that it's going to take a long time to
- 8:02put these acts back. That's where it
- 8:04becomes a real hardship because I've seen
- 8:07it happen before. We had it here in
- 8:08Canada. They gutted the Fisheries Act.
- 8:10They changed it. But now it's for oil and
- 8:12gas needs. It took a long time before the
- 8:14next government can put it back in place.
- 8:17They did make it stronger. They did have
- 8:19a consultant process and a review
- 8:21process, but it took about five or six
- 8:23years to put it back. And that was
- 8:25difficult during that time.
- 8:27And so we're going to have a lot of
- 8:27development that probably happened in the
- 8:28amount of fish habitat and the amount of
- 8:30fisheries and just environmental habitat
- 8:33that was degraded during that process was
- 8:35probably ridiculous. We still don't even
- 8:37know the effects yet. And that was 10
- 8:39years ago. So this is a warning from
- 8:41Canada saying, hey, this could be really
- 8:43bad in the future. We can lose a lot of
- 8:45animals. We can lose a lot of endangered
- 8:47species during this time when we
- 8:50deregulate. There's a reason why these
- 8:51regulations are in there for the first
- 8:53place in the first place and to
- 8:54deregulate them is not good. So anyway, we're going to be doing a lot of things.
- 8:57That's it for me. I'd love to hear your
