- 0:00Once you get above the tipping point, and then you get that flipping of sentiment, people
- 0:06start buying dips rather than selling rips, it's not hard to construct a million dollar
- 0:09price tag.
- 0:10Do you think this signifies that something's going to break and they're going to need to
- 0:14print a load of money?
- 0:14The trend of yields is higher.
- 0:17Literally, the value of the collateral that backs the whole system goes down in price.
- 0:22It's the market saying that something's wrong with the bedrock.
- 0:25But what does Bitcoin do in that environment, do you think?
- 0:28There is a price or a value where your obligations are larger than your assets.
- 0:33You want to have assets outside the system because everything else is going to be debased.
- 0:37We're in an era where the monetary system is changing.
- 0:40The world is going to look very different on the other side of this thing.
- 0:42I believe this is a trial balloon where they're trying to see how willing are people to accept changes of this magnitude.
- 0:48There's an exit route.
- 0:49We've got a period of time here where you've got to fight back.
- 0:54You ready?
- 0:55Let's go.
- 0:55Let's get into it, checkmate.
- 0:56Good to see you, man.
- 0:57Likewise, man. Thanks for coming down.
- 0:59You were pretty dejected when I saw you outside,
- 1:01but we're going to save that bit for later.
- 1:04There's good reason for it.
- 1:05Let's start with Bitcoin, though.
- 1:08Are we in a bull or a bear market?
- 1:11Because the way I look at this is,
- 1:13I think the bear market,
- 1:15sorry, the bull market starts
- 1:17the day after the bear market bottom.
- 1:19The worst day of the bear is the start of the bull.
- 1:21I'm not this believer that you have to get past all-time high
- 1:23to go into a bull market.
- 1:24But like, is it too early to say we're in a bull market
- 1:27or do you think we are?
- 1:28So this is the right framework to think about it.
- 1:30So the way I've been describing it,
- 1:32you don't know when the bottom is in
- 1:35until months and months and months after
- 1:36and then you look back and go,
- 1:37oh, okay, it was obvious.
- 1:39We spoke very soon after we hit 60K in February.
- 1:44My view was, and I've been calling it
- 1:45the price pain capitulation.
- 1:47This is the point where everyone who's price sensitive
- 1:49just gave up and they all gave up at the same time.
- 1:52You can see it in just the amount of loss,
- 1:53the amount of coins that moved, the amount of fear.
- 1:56My inbox got slammed.
- 1:57There's a ton of different anecdotes and reasons.
- 1:59That was a point in time where if you've been through a capitulation before,
- 2:04your alarm went off and you go, ah, that felt different.
- 2:07That felt like June 2022.
- 2:09Yeah.
- 2:09Right, 17.6.
- 2:10We went to 15.6, but no one really, price-wise, no one cares,
- 2:13but the eight months have separated them.
- 2:15So there is a very good case to be made that that was the price pain capitulation.
- 2:20Now, if you go back and look at previous bear markets,
- 2:222015, we kind of revisited the low.
- 2:26I figured it was $250 or whatever it was.
- 2:28We didn't go below it.
- 2:29In 2018, we didn't.
- 2:31We basically bottomed and there was just like slow,
- 2:33multi-month grind higher and then April away we went.
- 2:36In FTX, we had June, kind of eight months of grinding
- 2:41with FTX in the middle of it.
- 2:42That one we did go lower.
- 2:44We did go lower than the previous,
- 2:46than the price paying capitulation.
- 2:47That's actually the only example we have where it went lower.
- 2:49And I think a lot of people, because recency bias is a real thing,
- 2:52look at 2022 and say it must be lower lows.
- 2:55May not be.
- 2:56We may pull back to 65 and bounce higher from there.
- 3:00We may pull back to 75 and set a higher low.
- 3:02So from my perspective,
- 3:04I've been saying there's about an 80% chance
- 3:06that we've actually got the bottom is in.
- 3:10That's my base case.
- 3:11So that is like we're in a bull market.
- 3:12We'll look back at it.
- 3:14But my view is that you build confidence.
- 3:16So we know unless Bitcoin goes to zero,
- 3:18we can all say that at some point in time,
- 3:20we're going to be back in a bull.
- 3:21so what we're trying to do is work backwards and say well at what threshold do you go from 50%
- 3:27to 60 to 70 to 80 and depends who you are like for me i spend all day in the data and i trust my
- 3:33own gut more than anything else and my own instinct on studying this stuff i've got about an 80% view
- 3:38that it's the bull is in play but it's going to take a long time like all like 2016 2023 2023 took
- 3:45us the whole year to get above 30,000. The whole year of just boring grinding and everyone was
- 3:52afraid that every cell was another lower high. But ultimately, the thing just wanted to keep
- 3:56moving higher. So my view is that if you want to go back and say, is it a bull? I would say yes.
- 4:0180% odds. 20% is still very meaningful, one in five. However, I would also say that once we get
- 4:08through the 80s, right? 78K is quite important. Short-term cost basis, true market mean, a bunch
- 4:13of on-chain levels, that's kind of the middle.
- 4:15That's the middle of everyone's cost basis
- 4:17where they feel if you get above to 85,
- 4:21people felt a brief sigh of relief.
- 4:23If you go to 85, you break through what I call
- 4:26the second line of defense, 200-day moving average.
- 4:28Suddenly, you're momentum, guys, with a Bloomberg terminal.
- 4:30Bitcoin shows up as a not-red asset.
- 4:33There's a bunch of things that just we get above
- 4:35a big supply cluster, people's cost base are there.
- 4:38Getting above 85, the bear case, in my view, is in trouble.
- 4:41The bears are also going to defend that level very, very hard.
- 4:45The last line of defense is ironically the same
- 4:48as the bull's last line of defense.
- 4:49We spoke about this again when we had Alec on...
- 4:5195K.
- 4:52Yeah, 80K in November.
- 4:53Okay.
- 4:5395.
- 4:54So the 50-week moving average, just super simple stuff, right?
- 4:58The classic Bitcoin bear is you break below the 50-week moving average,
- 5:01you visit the 200-week.
- 5:03We got to within 3% of the 200-week.
- 5:05The 200-week is now higher than where the bottom was.
- 5:07It's like 60.5 now.
- 5:09So even if we revisit the 200 week, it's not going to be a low, a low.
- 5:12But the other thing is once you get to 95,
- 5:15the bears are kind of in trouble, right?
- 5:18And you've already given up the 60 to 95.
- 5:20So by the time we get above 95,
- 5:22every man and his dog is going to agree it's a bull.
- 5:25I try to work backwards and say, well, if we get through 78,
- 5:28and by the way, I don't expect we'll do this the first time ever.
- 5:30It's always going to take a series of whacking our head against the ceiling.
- 5:34Get through it at 78.
- 5:35the odds of us going to 85 go up a lot.
- 5:38Once you get above 85,
- 5:40the odds of us going to 95 go up a lot.
- 5:42So it's almost like an exponential increase in the odds.
- 5:45And I'm looking at the way market structure looks at the moment.
- 5:47To my instinct, to my gut feel,
- 5:49I think that 60K was sufficiently bad
- 5:52that it scared a lot of people.
- 5:54Smart money's radars go up and go,
- 5:56okay, I need to accumulate.
- 5:57And something that I think happened on this rally,
- 6:00and I know this because I've received tons of these messages,
- 6:01people who go,
- 6:02So it turns out I didn't buy as much
- 6:06as I would have liked below 70.
- 6:07Where do you think the next dip's going to go down to?
- 6:10I'm like, ah.
- 6:11That's a signal.
- 6:11That's me in 2019.
- 6:13We got to 4K, 5K, 6K.
- 6:16I bought way too much at 14
- 6:17and then I got slammed in the second bear.
- 6:20But I kept buying through that process.
- 6:21I'm like, I think the tide has now changed.
- 6:23So that's my current view.
- 6:25But if you're 80%,
- 6:26what are the metrics that have hit
- 6:27that make you 80% sure?
- 6:29There's a bunch of things.
- 6:30I mean, let's just start technical, right?
- 6:31Let's just start with the technical models.
- 6:32Now, I'm no technical analyst, but I understand how it works.
- 6:35And the reason why I like to look at technical stuff on very big picture,
- 6:37I know that every man and his dog with an ETF, right?
- 6:41The TradFi guys aren't looking at the stuff that I look at.
- 6:42Yeah.
- 6:43But they're going to look at the weekly RSI, which got to 26,
- 6:46which is the lowest level it's been ever.
- 6:48And every time it's been below 30, it's been the bottom, like the bottom.
- 6:52So from a technical level, and even if we sell off again...
- 6:55Is that what these institutional people are really looking at?
- 6:57Oh, hell yeah.
- 6:58I mean, again, a lot of these guys, they just have filters, right?
- 7:02Their quant is in there doing all the weird numbers.
- 7:05But a lot of these guys have got a Bloomberg terminal.
- 7:07They see Bitcoin.
- 7:08Where is it relative to its 200-day moving average?
- 7:09When it flips, it goes from red to green.
- 7:11Suddenly, they've just got their eye on it.
- 7:12They don't care about stuff on the daily chop
- 7:15because they know, as everybody should learn eventually,
- 7:18some people don't, but as you should learn eventually,
- 7:20the daily chop just drives you mad.
- 7:23It doesn't mean anything.
- 7:24And everyone applies.
- 7:25I've got this like I guess a human psychology thing I use as an anchor.
- 7:29People love to take big macro stuff, the debasement trade,
- 7:34and they apply it to the next candle.
- 7:36They go, why isn't it going up?
- 7:38I don't get it.
- 7:39And they also take big picture things and they expect it to happen
- 7:43on a micro timeframe.
- 7:44We do the opposite as well.
- 7:45We look at the next red daily candle and go, oh, man,
- 7:49just another lower high.
- 7:50It's all over.
- 7:51The bears were right.
- 7:52and they compress and they extend small stuff to be very big.
- 7:57And the big guys, they've done this enough times.
- 7:59They just zoom out and they go, look, things massively oversold.
- 8:02Probably no longer expensive.
- 8:04If you just really zoom out and go like at 60K,
- 8:07I've got a mean reversion model that looks at on-chain, technical, trend.
- 8:11All of those models, if you put them together and aggregate them,
- 8:14I don't want to have bias for technical, bias for on-chain,
- 8:18bias for fast models, slow models.
- 8:20I use nine of them, take an average, right,
- 8:23work out where we are because I don't know
- 8:24which one's going to be perfect.
- 8:25None of them are.
- 8:27Going down to 60K was what I call Q10 event,
- 8:3010th quantile.
- 8:3210% of all days have been lower.
- 8:34In history, if you look at where Bitcoin was relative
- 8:36to all these things it oscillates around,
- 8:3810% of days were lower.
- 8:40Now, that means that 90% of the time it's higher.
- 8:42So that's a pretty good gauge.
- 8:45Like we've bottomed at Q4, Q5 in previous bears.
- 8:48That's 54K.
- 8:49That's the realized price right now.
- 8:51I see a lot of bears posting like,
- 8:54you know, this bear flag is going to break down to 45.
- 8:56Maybe.
- 8:57And I'll learn a lot if that's true
- 8:58because it's certainly not my base case.
- 9:00My model says that's a Q1 event.
- 9:02Now, can it happen?
- 9:02Yes, nothing's a zero probability,
- 9:04but am I going to make a base case
- 9:05on something that has only ever happened in 2011
- 9:08at $2 Bitcoin?
- 9:09I can't in my right mind do that.
- 9:12So I have satisfied myself that I'm not worried about 45K.
- 9:16If it happens, I'll learn from that experience,
- 9:17but it's not something that phases me at this point.
- 9:21If you already self-custody Bitcoin,
- 9:23you know the deal with hardware wallets.
- 9:24Complex setups, clumsy interfaces,
- 9:27and a seed phrase that can be lost, stolen, or forgotten.
- 9:30Well, BitKey fixes that.
- 9:31BitKey is a multi-sig hardware wallet
- 9:33built by the team behind Square and Cash App.
- 9:35It packs a cryptographic recovery system
- 9:37and built-in inheritance feature
- 9:38into an intuitive, easy-to-use wallet
- 9:41with no seed phrase to sweat over.
- 9:43It's simple, secure self-custody without the stress.
- 9:46and time named Bitkey one of the best inventions of 2024.

- 11:36You talk about realized price a lot. Why is that like one of the most important metrics?
- 11:40Right now, it's actually a very interesting metric.
- 11:43So the realized price, there's two on-chain models,
- 11:45three that I think everyone should understand.
- 11:47They're all the same idea.
- 11:48So let's start with the big boy.
- 11:50The realized price, rather than looking at every...
- 11:53So the spot price is every coin in the supply
- 11:56valued at the spot price.
- 11:57That's the market cap.
- 11:58The realized cap is every coin in the supply
- 12:01valued when it last moved.
- 12:02So Satoshi's million coins are big in Bitcoin terms,
- 12:05zero in realized terms.
- 12:07Now, that's an important...
- 12:08Hold that idea.
- 12:08Old lost coins, big in Bitcoin, small in USD.
- 12:13Someone who bought yesterday, his coins are worth 78.
- 12:15Someone who bought the top, 126.
- 12:17So the idea is that when coins move around the system,
- 12:19they're signaling they're not lost.
- 12:22And as they're revalued, some of them are cost basis changes,
- 12:25some of them are inflows, ETFs, all of that stuff.
- 12:28We can also then measure, so every coin has a cost basis
- 12:31based on when the UTXO was created.
- 12:34Aggregate them all together.
- 12:34What is the average purchase or acquisition price,
- 12:38in inverted commas?
- 12:38and this is where it starts to get funky and interesting
- 12:41from my perspective, it's not really an acquisition price
- 12:44because Satoshi's coins, they're valued at zero,
- 12:48but at 60K at the low, they hold $110 billion
- 12:52of unrealized profit.
- 12:55Now, in order to get to break even,
- 12:57which means we hit the realized price,
- 12:59every previous bear we've gone below the realized price.
- 13:02So tons of people are looking and saying,
- 13:03we haven't hit the bottom of the bear
- 13:05because we haven't gone below the realized price.
- 13:06the problem with that is satoshi can't take those one point uh 110 billion in profit but the guys
- 13:14who bought the top to get to break even you need 110 billion dollars worth of people who buy the top
- 13:18and hodl through it now the challenge with that is they do lock in the losses they reduce their
- 13:25unrealized loss because they go oh shit get me out of this thing right i don't want to hold it
- 13:28anymore so they panic so in order to over time as bitcoin gets bigger those locked unrealized
- 13:34profits, they actually create this like lowering effect because you've got all these coins that
- 13:40never contributed to the numerator, the realized cap, the value of every coin when they moved,
- 13:46but they will always have a big weight in the denominator. And if you know how a fraction works,
- 13:50if you've got a bigger denominator and a smaller numerator, you're going to have an underestimate,
- 13:54always going to be underestimating. And the bigger Bitcoin gets, the bigger that underestimation
- 13:59will be. Now, the model that I believe is when everyone says the realized price is the cost basis
- 14:05of everyone, it's the cost basis of every coin. But everyone is a human thing. That's a person
- 14:12behind the coin, a person behind the screen metric. That's what I call the true market mean.
- 14:17Now, Dave Puel and I developed this as part of our coin time economics framework.
- 14:21And what we try to do is we have this formula. Think about every coin of all of the coin days,
- 14:26One Bitcoin generates one coin day per day.
- 14:30If Satoshi's coins, they've only ever accumulated coin days.
- 14:33They've never destroyed them.
- 14:34The guy who spent yesterday has destroyed all of his coin days
- 14:37and he's only just starting to reaccumulate them.
- 14:39So that's the two ends of the spectrum.
- 14:41This guy's coin is much more active.
- 14:43Satoshi's is dead.
- 14:44So we literally use that health bar across the whole system
- 14:47and work out, well, where are the active investors?
- 14:49Let's get rid of all the lost coins and the early investors
- 14:53who have no cost basis.
- 14:55and we're arguing over where they're going to move with quantum.
- 14:58Let's look at what the average cost base is for active investors, 78K.
- 15:02What's Saylor's cost basis?
- 15:03Who's, I would say, a DCA-er.
- 15:05This is about 78K, right?
- 15:0675.
- 15:06Okay.
- 15:07What's the average for the ETFs in terms of the inflows?
- 15:0982.
- 15:10What's the average?
- 15:12I've got this model where I do like a difficulty regression
- 15:14between a regression model between difficulty and market cap.
- 15:18In the ASIC era, average cost all in to mine, about 82.
- 15:22So you're getting 82, 82, 78, 75, that zone.
- 15:28And then when you look at the supply distribution,
- 15:29there's a ton of coins in that 85 area,
- 15:33both from the tariff tantrum back in 25,
- 15:35but then also on the first sell-off that we had
- 15:37at the start of this year.
- 15:39It's the middle.
- 15:40That's the centroid.
- 15:41So all that is the reason that 85K is such an important level
- 15:43because we're getting above that.
- 15:44Correct.
- 15:45And then if you think about it, on the way down,
- 15:49and here's some fun facts for you.
- 15:50People worry about buying the top
- 15:52because they're worried about their losses going up.
- 15:55We had about $270 billion.
- 15:57At 60K, $270 billion of unrealized loss.
- 16:02Sounds like a big number.
- 16:03It's a quarter of a trillion dollars.
- 16:04Until you factor in that we had $900 billion,
- 16:07almost a trillion of unrealized profit evaporate.
- 16:11So people's portfolio that they didn't sell
- 16:14got smashed by almost a trillion.
- 16:17That's the painful part.
- 16:18So if you think about that centroid at 85, 70, 85,
- 16:24as price gets closer to that level,
- 16:26people who were previously counting out their bills
- 16:29and thinking, look at all this stuff I can buy,
- 16:31suddenly go, now I'm in winter.
- 16:34I've got to wait.
- 16:35I hate this thing, right?
- 16:37I can't believe I'm down 50%.
- 16:38Oh, shit, I've got to clear my leverage loan
- 16:40before I get liquidated.
- 16:41Like, people start feeling negative.
- 16:44The more cost basis levels you drop below,
- 16:46the more people start to compound and go, I think it's over.
- 16:50Now I'm in pain.
- 16:51Now I'm going to capitulate.
- 16:52Oh, shit, it's all over.
- 16:53I'm selling everything.
- 16:54So what you're doing is on the way back up,
- 16:58first line of defense, 78, second line, 85, third line, 95.
- 17:02As you get through those levels, there's technical models there
- 17:05that the dude with the Bloomberg terminal will see
- 17:07and the traders, the momentum guys.
- 17:09There's also levels that very often on-chain models
- 17:12that describe human behavior, where they feel.
- 17:15Once you get above the tipping point,
- 17:17you've now got a bunch of people who bought the bottom
- 17:19who now go, hey, I just got rewarded for that.
- 17:22And then the people who bought at 80K,
- 17:24they might take profits here and say, give me my money back.
- 17:27But if you get to 85, they go, ooh,
- 17:29maybe I should actually just haul through this now.
- 17:31And then you get that flipping of sentiment.
- 17:32People start buying dips rather than selling rips.
- 17:35So it's a process.
- 17:37Getting out the ass end of a bear market is a process.
- 17:39It usually takes the best part of a year.
- 17:42But everyone fantasizes over this bottom wick.
- 17:45and they won't do anything
- 17:46until getting to the bottom wick.
- 17:48Go back to my mean reversion model.
- 17:49I was beating the drum at 60K.
- 17:52I put out a piece called,
- 17:53literally at 60K,
- 17:54called Welcome to Deep Value.
- 17:56And my point was,
- 17:57I can't tell the future.
- 17:58I don't know if we go lower.
- 17:59But what I do know is that
- 18:00I don't have a single metric on hand right now
- 18:03that is in the bottom 20% of the cycle.
- 18:06If you just start DCAing over that last 20%,
- 18:09it means you've got an 80% chance of winning.
- 18:12Don't worry about the price.
- 18:13just be there for that bottom 80%.
- 18:15Even if we pull back to 75%,
- 18:17all of those folks are going to be very, very happy
- 18:19with their decision.
- 18:20So it's just about putting the odds in your favor,
- 18:22not worrying about this.
- 18:24Delete bears.
- 18:25Bears have no ambition
- 18:27because the problem with bears
- 18:29is that the best they can win is 100%.
- 18:31You can only short something to zero.
- 18:33And even then, we know that that's constrained.
- 18:35The upside is unlimited.
- 18:36So if you spend too much time listening to bears
- 18:39after most of the damage has been done,
- 18:41RSI getting to 26 on a weekly basis, sorry,
- 18:45that's a momentum sign.
- 18:46The downside momentum is no longer in their favor.
- 18:49It's just a bad short.
- 18:51Delete bears.
- 18:52Yeah, no, don't delete bears.
- 18:53Just ignore them.
- 18:54Ignore them, laugh at them.
- 18:55When we last did the show,
- 18:57I think Bitcoin was about 60K.
- 18:59It was pretty much the bottom.
- 19:00And I remember we were saying,
- 19:01this feels like deep value.
- 19:02And I'm not in the data like you are,
- 19:03but I've been looking at the Bitcoin chart
- 19:06for 10 years now.
- 19:07And so I just get gut checks every now and again.
- 19:09And at 80K, it doesn't feel like deep value anymore.
- 19:13But it does feel like things are sort of swinging.
- 19:15Like, I was desperately stacking as much as I could.
- 19:17I was doing anything I could to stack at 60K.
- 19:19That's kind of stopped for me right now.
- 19:20Yes, agree.
- 19:21But, like, if 85 is the next number that we need to get past,
- 19:23and then 95, like, how quickly do you think that can happen?
- 19:26And this is why the recovery from a bear takes ages.
- 19:29Because people like you and I, I'm the same, right?
- 19:31We're still, like, again, my main reversion index, it's 33.
- 19:35We're in the bottom third.
- 19:36Do you care if you got, like, if you walk into a casino,
- 19:38You know, let's say two thirds of the time you're going to win.
- 19:40Are you going to like not play?
- 19:41No, of course you're going to play.
- 19:42So it's still a good price,
- 19:43but it's no longer that I'm going to just like sell chairs mode.
- 19:47I'm not going to find what I can do.
- 19:49Leave your daily DCA plug in away because it's still good value.
- 19:52But like, am I putting big slugs in?
- 19:54No, I'm just letting the DCA just tap away.
- 19:57If we see anything with a seven handle again,
- 20:00right down to like a 75 or a 70 or a 60, anything.
- 20:03I mean, what are we at now?
- 20:04Like 76, five, I think.
- 20:06But that's the idea, right?
- 20:08There's a lot of people who are now expecting 40
- 20:12and they're now going, maybe I'll take 50.
- 20:15And if it comes to 65, then they might just take that as well.
- 20:18So what we really looking for is do we get the transition into a full buy the dip regime Now there a lot of things starting to inflect But to my view we more or less hit our ceiling at this like 80K zone
- 20:32You need to pull back.
- 20:34This is something that in like in markets,
- 20:36the bears at this point in time are going to get super excited on every red candle.
- 20:40Sometimes you must go down to go up because you generate,
- 20:44like we had, by the way, all of April, pretty sure it was April,
- 20:47we had a massive amount of short interest.
- 20:49People were just shorting this thing all the way from 65 up to 80.
- 20:53That's cooled off a bit now.
- 20:54They finally realized, oh, maybe I should go long.
- 20:56And you're starting to get this like degenerate traders
- 20:58just like going long at the top, going short at the bottom.
- 21:01But there's more and more people that realize I got too cute.
- 21:05It was at 60.
- 21:06I thought it was going to 58.
- 21:08I wanted my 58K gang.
- 21:10I wanted that just for the memes.
- 21:11Now it's at 80 and I didn't buy as much as I wanted.
- 21:13And those people, there's just a ton of them who are going to go, okay.
- 21:16I got too cute with the problem.
- 21:18I probably should have just DCA'd.
- 21:20Now I'm going to have to.
- 21:21And that's a hard feeling as well because that's me in 2019.
- 21:25I didn't buy anywhere as much as I would have liked
- 21:27in the 2018 bottom between 3 and 5K.
- 21:30I bought way too much at 14K.
- 21:32And then we had another bear market that ended in COVID.
- 21:35But, you know, really we chopped around 8K.
- 21:38It was kind of the average for that year.
- 21:40You know, 14K was not a good price.
- 21:42But now I look back and it's a great price.
- 21:43So, you know, it's just a game of timeframes.
- 21:46just don't get caught up in all the micro daily stuff
- 21:49and, you know, just unfollow bears.
- 21:51But how long do you think it takes?
- 21:53Because October 7th was pretty much the top, right?
- 21:56Which means it was October 6th at 6 p.m. UTC.
- 22:00I measured this because that's when all the four-year cyclers
- 22:03have their bids, right?
- 22:04Whatever the price will be on October 6th.
- 22:06That's the top.
- 22:06That's the bottom at 6 p.m.
- 22:09But so that's like eight months, seven months.
- 22:12You said it takes a year.
- 22:14Like, do you think we're close to getting out of this?
- 22:16Well, it depends because if the bull market's in play now,
- 22:18if 60K was the bottom, if we look back in six months
- 22:20and it was the bottom, then the bull market started in February.
- 22:23And by many metrics, we talked about this,
- 22:25the bull author is the bear that follows.
- 22:27If that thesis is correct, and again, all of this is a thesis,
- 22:30I can't predict the future, but that's my current working model.
- 22:33If that is the bottom, then this bear market has a lot of similarities.
- 22:36And this is the part that I think a lot of people miss.
- 22:39A lot of the under-the-hood damage, the realized loss, the fear,
- 22:44the losses that actually came into the system,
- 22:46the pain people experienced.
- 22:49I can tell you my inbox on that day told me
- 22:51from very serious Bitcoiners,
- 22:53I've heard this from other very serious Bitcoiners,
- 22:56I just had a message from people who were tenured
- 22:59and they were terrified, thinking it's all over.
- 23:02I'm like, that is the signal.
- 23:04That is the feeling that people just go,
- 23:07I'm so long this thing, I don't know, I think it's over.
- 23:09Like, oh, shit.
- 23:11That's the kind of event that really flushes out
- 23:13everyone who is price sensitive.
- 23:15If you're a tourist, you're gone. You're done.
- 23:17But it's crazy to me that tenured people would think like that.
- 23:20If you've been through the COVID crash
- 23:21and you've been through the FTX crash, this one was nothing.
- 23:24No, but I think this is where...
- 23:26This is why I like the psychological angle of all this stuff.
- 23:29Bitcoin was in a bear market versus other assets from January 2025.
- 23:34We topped versus bonds and fiat in October 2025.
- 23:39By the way, let's zoom out a little bit
- 23:42because Bitcoin's a long-duration asset.
- 23:44If we zoom out a little bit and look at Bitcoin's performance since the end of the 22 bear market,
- 23:48because that's a key point because everything went through a bear market, bonds included,
- 23:52and we suddenly move into a bonds are heading higher, rates are heading higher regime,
- 23:56a bond bear after a 40-year bond bull.
- 23:59The end of 2022 was a regime shift for the world.
- 24:02Not only that, you've got the US freezing Russia's reserves, gold, all that stuff.
- 24:06So end of 22 is a very good anchoring point to say what changed since then.
- 24:10Now, if you measure Bitcoin's performance, even up till today, including the bear, Bitcoin kicked ass.
- 24:172023 all the way through the end of 24, January 25, it topped out.
- 24:22Everything else started running.
- 24:24Gold, silver, equities, AI trade.
- 24:27They started outperforming Bitcoin.
- 24:28So people's emotions was this parabola envy.
- 24:32Yes, Bitcoin up versus fiat, but you don't think about your past gains.
- 24:37You only think about what you're not getting today, right?
- 24:39people live in the moment. So versus everything else, Bitcoin was in a bear market through all of
- 24:432025. And that's why I think November at 80k, we had a very, I think we did a pop then as well.
- 24:48That felt like another very meaningful flush out because we just had this like,
- 24:53this thing sucks. I might as well go and buy Nvidia, right? Get me out of this thing.
- 24:57So you've got this pent up frustration. And then February is just the final nail in the coffin.
- 25:01People are just like, I'm totally done. Now, everyone was talking about, everyone turned
- 25:04into a silver bug for a period of time.
- 25:06Very short period of time.
- 25:07That silver parabola matched Bitcoin's post-2023 performance.
- 25:12Yep.
- 25:13So in a way, silver kind of caught up.
- 25:15Also a speculative long tail, precious metal, sound money,
- 25:20caught up with Bitcoin's performance, including its bear market.
- 25:22So that just puts into perspective that, yes, silver went vertical
- 25:26to match Bitcoin after it went down 50%, you know,
- 25:29since that time period.
- 25:31if you zoom really in
- 25:33Operation Epic Fury
- 25:34Bitcoin is up 50% versus silver
- 25:37since then, it's up 20% versus equities
- 25:39it's actually doing like, if you drill down
- 25:41and say well Nvidia specifically, yeah once you get down
- 25:43to individuals, but you've got to look at these things
- 25:45in terms of like, what is a reasonable comparison
- 25:47over what time frame
- 25:48people love to measure, oh Bitcoin's the same
- 25:51price it was at the 2021 top
- 25:53it's like yeah what happened the last time it was the same
- 25:55cycle top price in a bear, it's kind of a good place
- 25:57to actually buy
- 25:58you know and by the way pro tip don't buy the top and then not buy the bottom because if you buy the
- 26:04top yeah your performance is going to suck in the bear but if you buy the bottom and you stop worrying
- 26:09about all these you know oh it didn't go up top to top bottom to bottom is what matters yeah the
- 26:14CAGR of the 200 week moving average is like 40 percent 35 percent the floor is increasing in 35
- 26:20everything else is just noise up and above that do you think we'll have the psychological level
- 26:25at 100K again?
- 26:26Because that was obviously
- 26:26a big thing on the way up.
- 26:27But now we've passed 100K.
- 26:29Do you think it'll still be something
- 26:29that plays a bit more?
- 26:30I don't think it'll be as meaningful.
- 26:31No.
- 26:31And, you know, look,
- 26:33I'm yet to find a satisfactory reason
- 26:36for why we just had so much selling
- 26:38above 100K.
- 26:39Truly, I've just settled on the,
- 26:41I've satisfied myself
- 26:42that 100K was a very special number
- 26:43for a lot of people.
- 26:44It was just stretches
- 26:45of all stretch targets.
- 26:45And we hit it.
- 26:46I remember when I first got into Bitcoin,
- 26:48people talked about 100K
- 26:49like they talk about a million now.
- 26:50Like it was this long shot thing
- 26:52that seemed like,
- 26:54don't get me wrong,
- 26:55I can see how a million dollars happens.
- 26:56But it still seems pretty far-fetched.
- 26:59And it was 100K when I first came into Bitcoin.
- 27:01I think there was people who had been holding from 2013, 2012.
- 27:04And that's just a huge number.
- 27:05It is a huge number.
- 27:06It is the point where further gains actually don't improve your life that much.
- 27:09Yeah.
- 27:10You know what I mean?
- 27:11And by the way, if Bitcoin goes to a million dollars,
- 27:13there's a lot of people listening to this
- 27:14who if you put yourself two cycles before yourself,
- 27:18and you'd be there now, right?
- 27:20That aspirational target a lot of people have,
- 27:22it's like now it's actually meaningful.
- 27:23And again, none of this is because we assume that Bitcoin must go to these levels.
- 27:27It's just a rational view of where fiat's going, the whole world, the whole Bitcoin case.
- 27:33It's not hard to construct a million dollar price target.
- 27:36It's kind of a base case of use it versus gold.
- 27:39It's just better.
- 27:40Is my son going to find Bitcoin more useful than gold?
- 27:43Of course he is.
- 27:44I mean, I found Bitcoin more useful than gold.
- 27:46It's a pain in the ass to move metals, which is a feature.
- 27:49It's also a massive bug.
- 27:51You know, the internet's a thing, guys.
- 27:54It's a real thing.
- 27:56Who's moving the price now?
- 27:57Because, like, people always talk about
- 27:59sailor buys not really affecting spot Bitcoin price.
- 28:01Like, who is going to take us from here to 85 to 95K?
- 28:04Yeah, I mean, I think people overthink this.
- 28:06A lot of institutions have, you know,
- 28:09I ran this study a lot.
- 28:10I'm well overdue redoing it,
- 28:11just looking at the ETFs and who their owners are,
- 28:1413F filings and the like.
- 28:15I did this way back in 2024, so it's long out of date.
- 28:19But the stats were like 20, 25%,
- 28:21was institutions and then when you look at the breakdown of those institutions disproportionately
- 28:26the most amount was held by like very very small firms you know some of them running like 100%
- 28:31their bitcoin hedge fund yeah um or they've got a five percent allocation once you go up to like
- 28:36the trillion dollar the multi-trillion dollar asset manager they're like 0.0001 percent
- 28:40guys going to 0.002 percent is like hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars like you just need
- 28:47the incremental accumulation and i think people fall into the trap of being like oh i was into
- 28:51individuals and it was companies it's got to be sovereigns next it's like it could also just be
- 28:55companies getting bigger you know like individuals for me i'm later in my life i'm later in my
- 29:00earnings career as you get older you tend to earn more money i'm buying more bitcoin i can't my
- 29:06capacity to buy bitcoin is significantly better than it was yeah the prices are higher i'm putting
- 29:10more dollars in and getting less bitcoin well that is also well yes there's also a component of like
- 29:15do you buy more because you understand this thing more and you know and that's why bear markets like
- 29:19this, you can actually ramp things up because you've got that conviction. But, you know,
- 29:24institutions do the same thing. Once you get through 100K, and here's the other story.
- 29:28Once you get through 100K, the institutions that don't have the nuts to step in now will step in,
- 29:33back in. Do you think risk adjusted, this is like the best Bitcoins I've ever been?
- 29:37Well, again, if we go down to 45K, it's a 2011 $2 Bitcoin. Based on my mean reversion study,
- 29:44you know, of course, it's not the same as $2 Bitcoin. But if you think about it,
- 29:47in order to go lower than where we are now,
- 29:50you needed catastrophic fraud
- 29:52and a complete evisceration of the whole lending market.
- 29:56Now, there's two things that I can see that could genuinely,
- 29:59let's say three things,
- 30:00that could genuinely be that risk factor that I can see.
- 30:03There's a fourth that's just macro, you know, world implode.
- 30:07Okay, fine.
- 30:08We're going to get to that.
- 30:08Yeah, down, go up.
- 30:11The other one is quantum turns out to be a real thing.
- 30:13Yeah.
- 30:13Right?
- 30:14I don't think there's anyone serious
- 30:15who thinks that's coming in the next couple of years.
- 30:16So at a minimum, we'll probably be higher should that ever show up.
- 30:21There's two others I was going to say there.
- 30:25Coinbase has a major hack.
- 30:27Major loss of custody failure.
- 30:30Huge black swan.
- 30:31I would say the most catastrophic thing that could happen.
- 30:33Treasuries.
- 30:34And then the other one is just Saylor has a problem.
- 30:38There is a game here where price goes down,
- 30:42the equity value goes to zero,
- 30:44and your preferreds.
- 30:46Because if you think about it,
- 30:47you've got the Bitcoin stack,
- 30:48you've got to subtract the debt,
- 30:49you've got to then subtract the preferreds.
- 30:51That's what's left in the equity stack, right?
- 30:53The MSTR share.
- 30:54There is a point in time
- 30:55where the equity does go to zero.
- 30:56And it's not when the price goes,
- 30:57when Bitcoin goes to 10K,
- 31:00the equity goes to zero much, much higher
- 31:02than where that is.
- 31:04And then stretch,
- 31:05sorry, not stretch,
- 31:06stride starts to get eaten into
- 31:07and then strike.
- 31:08There is a level where things go pear-shaped there, right?
- 31:12People don't like to talk about,
- 31:13but there is a real risk.
- 31:14If you subtract away and look where the equity value is zero,
- 31:17it is not where Saylor says price could go
- 31:20and the company would be fine.
- 31:21It's a lot higher than that.
- 31:22But what percentage would you put on that happening?
- 31:24Because it's got to be pretty low, right?
- 31:26I think it's low.
- 31:28Of the four risks I just illustrated,
- 31:31let's leave macro, of the three Bitcoin-specific ones,
- 31:34I think it's the most likely of the three.
- 31:36Quantum being the least likely.
- 31:37Coinbase, just because something can go very wrong there.
- 31:40That's another big risk.
- 31:42But yeah, Saylor having a real problem
- 31:43is, I would argue, the most prescient or most near term thing.
- 31:47But you're talking like a 2% risk or less?
- 31:50Yes, 2%, 5%.
- 31:51But again, it depends where the price is.
- 31:52And I think when you run the analysis
- 31:54and actually look at where that equity value is,
- 31:58I forget the actual number.
- 31:59I think from memory it's like in the 50s,
- 32:01in the 50Ks, like MSTR is like quite literally worth,
- 32:04well, it's worth zero because there's no equity left.
- 32:07If you went to liquidation,
- 32:08now people can put a premium in there
- 32:10because they're like, well, the company probably won't liquidate.
- 32:12They would actually just sell the Bitcoin to deal with it.
- 32:15But there is a world where MSTR had a pure,
- 32:19I'm going to do an equity analysis of what is left after obligations.
- 32:23The answer is zero.
- 32:25And it's as high as 50s.
- 32:26I need to check the numbers.
- 32:28And to be fair, I'm actually leveraging someone else's analysis here,
- 32:31which I won't take credit for.
- 32:32But having read their paper, I forget the exact number.
- 32:36But it is higher.
- 32:37Wow. That's kind of scary.
- 32:39It is. It is.
- 32:39so ETFs
- 32:42like how
- 32:43when we last spoke
- 32:44you were saying
- 32:45how strong they've been
- 32:46through this bear market
- 32:47is that still the case?
- 32:48we're about 3% off
- 32:49AUM all time high
- 32:50and Eric Balthunis
- 32:52was on
- 32:53Marty's pod
- 32:53the other day
- 32:54and he was saying
- 32:55cumulative flows
- 32:56I've been tracking
- 32:56cumulative flows
- 32:57and he was saying
- 32:58that is the metric
- 32:59because it's dollars in
- 33:00versus dollars out
- 33:01it got down
- 33:02at the all time high
- 33:03like at 50% down in price
- 33:05we were down 12%
- 33:0612 and a bit percent
- 33:07from the all time high
- 33:08of like 63 billion
- 33:09I think we're like 5% off all-time highs now.
- 33:12I would not put my money on ETFs
- 33:13being the best holders.
- 33:14The hodlers.
- 33:16The hodlers of this cycle, unquestionably.
- 33:18You just need to add a load of friction
- 33:20and people won't sell.
- 33:21No, I actually think that Eric's got a good point
- 33:23that a lot of these people are,
- 33:25either it's a very small position,
- 33:26they just don't care,
- 33:27or just the characteristic of people who buy ETFs
- 33:29is that they buy and hold it.
- 33:32It's a small part of their portfolio.
- 33:33They're willing to take the risk.
- 33:34Potentially going in retirement accounts.
- 33:36All the rest of it.
- 33:36Yeah, that's cool though.
- 33:38So are they the biggest buyer on the market at the moment?
- 33:41They're about equal with Saylor at the moment.
- 33:43So when you look at total capital flows, generally speaking, through all of the bull and all of the bear until very recently,
- 33:51when you look at spot sell side, it's been five times bigger than your ETF inflows on net.
- 33:57More than five times bigger than Saylor.
- 33:59Right now, Saylor, just in terms of the amount of money that strategy is pulling in, and the ETFs, they're approximately equal.
- 34:07they're about as large as in terms of the on-chain world
- 34:09in terms of the amount of flows.
- 34:10So they are very serious buyers
- 34:12relative to the amount of sell-side.
- 34:14We're seeing a massive decline in sell-side.
- 34:16From an on-chain perspective, there's two components.
- 34:19There's realized profit and realized loss.
- 34:21You can look at them as individuals.
- 34:22You can combine them together
- 34:23because they both take you with signal.
- 34:25A lot of on-chain metrics come from the perspective
- 34:27of holders or sellers
- 34:29because in order to print something
- 34:31on the on-chain perspective,
- 34:32you have to own the Bitcoin.
- 34:34So if you're realizing a profit,
- 34:36it means you think Bitcoin's going lower.
- 34:38If you are realizing a loss,
- 34:39it also means you think Bitcoin's going lower.
- 34:41It's a signal from the sellers,
- 34:42the seller side metric.
- 34:44So the amount of profit and loss
- 34:46being locked in right now is very, very small.
- 34:48Just comparatively speaking,
- 34:50we see this in not just late bears,
- 34:53very late bears,
- 34:55and all through early bulls,
- 34:562023s, 2016, some of 2019.
- 35:00Like the period where it goes nowhere
- 35:02and drives you mad,
- 35:04but the bottom's in.
- 35:05That's the kind of environment
- 35:06where it's just like no one cares.
- 35:07Peak apathy.
- 35:09Our free subscriber list for the newsletter, right?
- 35:11We've got paid and freeze.
- 35:13Freeze has just been like a straight lineup
- 35:15since we started the newsletter.
- 35:16There's always flows coming in.
- 35:18It's gone dead flat since February.
- 35:20No matter how hard we push,
- 35:21it's gone dead flat.
- 35:23Great sign, apathy.
- 35:25That's probably similar to the podcast.
- 35:27I would say the growth,
- 35:28apart from like standout guests,
- 35:30like this show will probably do quite well
- 35:31because we're here talking about the Bitcoin price
- 35:32and people want to know.
- 35:33but I think the amount of subscribers
- 35:36has definitely slowed
- 35:37because I think it gets to the point
- 35:38where people are just like,
- 35:39I'm not interested to hear about Bitcoin for now.
- 35:40I'll come back at 100K.
- 35:42On the Saylor thing,
- 35:44do you think there's an additional risk
- 35:47where he's actually custing
- 35:48some of his Bitcoin at Coinbase?
- 35:50I think they do custing some of it.
- 35:52Yeah, no, I think they do.
- 35:53But it compounds those two risks
- 35:54because the Coinbase one can also affect Saylor.
- 35:57I'm not worried about Saylor losing the coins
- 35:59in like a theft perspective.
- 36:01I'm just thinking from a capital stack perspective
- 36:03that they may have to sell literally
- 36:05to make the equity not zero anymore.
- 36:06Sure, but they can domino.
- 36:07Like if the Coinbase hack happens,
- 36:09that is one of your risks,
- 36:10even if it's very, very small percentage,
- 36:11that is going to affect Saylor
- 36:13and then what happens to them?
- 36:13Oh, yeah, I know.
- 36:14Do you think he should hold his own coin?
- 36:16No, look, I think there's reasons why they don't.
- 36:18I'm not going to speculate on why.
- 36:19I'm sure they've got their reasons.
- 36:21That's one of those things where like
- 36:22if you're betting on anything to do with strategy,
- 36:25it's inherently a long bet on Bitcoin.
- 36:28If anything goes wrong with Coinbase,
- 36:29that's just like everything's affected.
- 36:31Like, literally, it's the asteroid.
- 36:33So it's like, honestly, if it happens, what do you do?
- 36:36You go long.
- 36:37You go long because, like, it's complete and total disaster.
- 36:40It really can't get that much worse from that point onwards.
- 36:42It'll take a long time to recover, but, like, you know, asteroids here go long.
- 36:47If you hold Bitcoin, your phone number is one of your biggest vulnerabilities.
- 36:51SimSwap attacks are one of the most common attack vectors targeting Bitcoiners.
- 36:54Somebody socially engineers an employee at your carrier,
- 36:57moves your number to a new device, and they're into your account.
- 37:00It happens because traditional carriers put a human in control of your phone number,
- 37:04someone who can be bribed or tricked.
- 37:06But Cape is a US mobile carrier built from the ground up with privacy and security at the core.
- 37:11They don't ask for your name or social security number when you sign up.
- 37:14They collect the minimum data required, delete it as fast as possible and never sell it.
- 37:18When you sign up, you receive a 24-word passphrase, just like a Bitcoin wallet.
- 37:22That's the only way to move your number.
- 37:24Not a customer service rep, not even Cape's own staff can do it.
- 37:27You're the only person who controls your number.
- 37:29If you hold your own keys, you should hold your own phone number too.
- 37:33So head over to cape.co forward slash WBD and use code WBD at checkout for 33% off your first six months.
- 37:40That's cape.co forward slash WBD and use code WBD.
- 37:44Do you wish you could access cash without selling your Bitcoin?
- 37:48Well, Ledin makes that possible.
- 37:49They're the global leader in Bitcoin-backed lending.
- 37:52And since 2018, they've issued over $9 billion in loans with a perfect record of protecting client assets.
- 37:57With Ledin you get full custody loans with no credit checks or monthly repayments
- 38:01Just easy access to dollars without selling a single sat
- 38:05Ledin exclusively offer Bitcoin-backed loans
- 38:08With all collateral held by Ledin directly or their funding partners
- 38:11Your Bitcoins never lent out to generate interest
- 38:13I recently took out a loan with Ledin
- 38:15The whole process was super easy
- 38:17The application took me less than 15 minutes
- 38:19And in a few hours I had the dollars in my account
- 38:22It was super smooth
- 38:23So if you need cash but you don't want to sell Bitcoin
- 38:26head over to leden.io forward slash WBD and you'll get 0.25% off your first loan.
- 38:32That's L-E-D-N dot I-O forward slash WBD.
- 38:36Do you want to pay less in taxes and stack more Bitcoin?
- 38:39Of course you do.
- 38:40Well, by mining Bitcoin with Blockware, you can.
- 38:43Under section 168k of the US tax code,
- 38:45Bitcoin mining servers qualify for 100% bonus depreciation.
- 38:49This means every dollar you spend on miners can directly offset your income in a single year.
- 38:53And that's true for both business owners and W-2 earners.
- 38:56If you have $100,000 in ordinary income, you can purchase $100,000 in miners and potentially
- 39:01offset your tax liability entirely.
- 39:04Blockware's mining as a service does all the heavy lifting.
- 39:06They secure the rigs, they source the low-cost power, and they handle all the day-to-day
- 39:10maintenance.
- 39:11So you get to stack Bitcoin every single day while drastically shrinking your tax bill.
- 39:15Get started today at blockwaresolutions.com forward slash WBD and use code WBD for $100
- 39:21off your first miner.
- 39:23That's blockwaresolutions.com forward slash WBD.
- 39:26Should we get into the macro risks?
- 39:28Yeah, yeah.
- 39:28Because macro is interesting at the moment.
- 39:31Macro is very interesting.
- 39:32The one that's crazy to me,
- 39:33I think people when you talk about bonds
- 39:35think it's boring,
- 39:35but it seems to be like,
- 39:37it's the signal for everything.
- 39:38It's the bedrock.
- 39:39And 30-year yields in the US,
- 39:42the UK, Australia,
- 39:43I'm sure other places,
- 39:44are now above 5%.
- 39:45The trend of yields is higher,
- 39:48and why that matters
- 39:49is yields are inversely related to price.
- 39:52So if the price,
- 39:53or literally the value of the collateral
- 39:56that backs the whole system,
- 39:58goes down in price, higher in yields.
- 40:01It's the market saying that something's wrong
- 40:03with the bedrock.
- 40:04And so I think the UK is actually pushing 6%.
- 40:07It's like, is that the market saying,
- 40:09well, we actually, we saw inflation come back in the US.
- 40:12Is it the market saying they're scared about inflation?
- 40:14Is it them saying we think the debt is out of control,
- 40:17deficit spending is out of control?
- 40:19Is it all of these things?
- 40:20It's all of the above, yeah.
- 40:22It's basically the market saying
- 40:24we don't trust you anymore.
- 40:24Pretty much.
- 40:25I mean, if you think about it,
- 40:26at the highest level, there's obviously nuances,
- 40:29especially when you talk about the global reserve currency
- 40:31versus Japan.
- 40:33There's going to be certain nuances here,
- 40:34but higher yield means they can't attract enough buyers
- 40:38at that price.
- 40:40So the price must go down to find buyers,
- 40:43which means yield must go up.
- 40:45If you can lend if you can get financing at 5 someone might lend to you because you riskier at 6 And if you can get financing at 6 you might have to go to 7 You know and that lifts
- 40:55This is the thing.
- 40:56If the sovereign, the Aussie government needs to borrow at 5.5% for 30 a year,
- 41:02who's more likely to pay back the Australian dollars?
- 41:04The government with a printer or you, mister, with a job and a 30-year mortgage?
- 41:08You know what I mean? Like, it's...
- 41:11But do you think this signifies that something's going to break
- 41:16and they're going to need to print a load of money?
- 41:17It's a funny one because, and I'm talking to Nick Barty,
- 41:20honestly I rely a lot on Nick to process a load of this stuff.
- 41:23But my general framework, I think this whole,
- 41:27the way macro is traded, again, I'm a macro tourist, right?
- 41:30I try to puzzle things together as best I can.
- 41:33The thing I found very interesting is how assets haven't traded
- 41:36the way people expected them to.
- 41:38Oil, for example, should be much higher.
- 41:41Everyone's mental model should be much higher.
- 41:43Now, there's an argument to say that we're drawing down on inventories.
- 41:46I've listened to it.
- 41:47I think Doenberg's got a good perspective,
- 41:49which is that China's got a ton that they bought
- 41:51in the years leading up to this
- 41:53that they're now releasing back into the market.
- 41:55There's all sorts of like supply dynamics.
- 41:57Also, life just finds a way.
- 41:58You know, I've been using that line a lot from Jurassic Park.
- 42:01Life just finds a way.
- 42:02You know, when they sanctioned Russia,
- 42:05do you think Russian oil didn't leave Russia?
- 42:06Of course it did.
- 42:07They found ways to turn it Norwegian.
- 42:10You know what I mean?
- 42:10they fill it up in the middle of the ocean.
- 42:12Life finds a way.
- 42:14So I think oil prices have surprised people.
- 42:16There's still certainly risk that this war gets worse
- 42:19and then prices go up and then infrastructure gets damaged.
- 42:21Like, we're in no way in happy days.
- 42:25I think oil prices have surprised people.
- 42:27The geopolitical hedge, which is gold,
- 42:29has done terribly in this process.
- 42:31Why?
- 42:32Because it did really well leading up to it.
- 42:34It's just-
- 42:35Same reason Bitcoin-
- 42:35Or the inverse reason to why Bitcoin's done well.
- 42:37Go listen to a big gold podcast
- 42:39and replace the word gold with Bitcoin
- 42:41and they say, oh, yeah, gold's always the first thing people sell
- 42:44because it's highly liquid.
- 42:45Yeah, of course.
- 42:46It's also just like it got to an RSI on the monthly at 95
- 42:49because it's overbought.
- 42:51Like last time it was there was 1979
- 42:52and then it had a 20-year bear market.
- 42:54So, you know, I'm not expecting that,
- 42:56but someone's got to pull back.
- 42:58Equities, all-time high.
- 42:59But then you've got to break down
- 43:00which sectors of equities are doing well.
- 43:02Some sectors are doing terribly.
- 43:04Some are doing really well.
- 43:05So I think the market's trading in a very strange way,
- 43:08But also when you look at it's on low volatility.
- 43:11Bonds are going higher, but the move index,
- 43:13which is the bond volatility index, surprisingly subdued.
- 43:17It was very high after the 2022 bear market.
- 43:20It took really three years to cool back down.
- 43:22Yeah, it's spiking here or there.
- 43:24It spiked in March.
- 43:25It spiked a little bit recently.
- 43:26But a lot of this is happening on low volatility.
- 43:30The dollar, the US dollar, you give the kind of set of facts
- 43:34in front of us, you would expect the safe haven bid
- 43:37for the dollar to be pushing DXY well above 100,
- 43:39which is where things start to get painful
- 43:41for the rest of the world.
- 43:42It's floating around 99, 98,
- 43:45going to go below 98, back to 99.
- 43:47But why is this happening?
- 43:48Why is it not reacting the way you'd expect it?
- 43:50It's a good question.
- 43:51And this is where you start to put,
- 43:52this is why I don't believe all this,
- 43:54like, oh, they're manipulating markets.
- 43:55All markets manipulate on certain levels.
- 43:57When you've got the bond market
- 43:58telling you a similar story to the oil market,
- 44:01similar story to the dollar,
- 44:03to me, a lot of the macro trends are still in play.
- 44:05There's bigger things that outweigh it.
- 44:08Could it be that the world can actually handle $100 oil
- 44:11better than the world thinks?
- 44:13Could it be that there actually is the capacity to,
- 44:16maybe the loss of barrels isn't as big in there.
- 44:18You know, Saudi's got pipelines.
- 44:20And when you piece it all together, yes, it's a problem,
- 44:23but it may not be the end of world problem that's been pitched.
- 44:27Bond yields going up is no doubt a risk factor.
- 44:30I mean, if I look at it from Australia's perspective,
- 44:33Australia's got to, we have no energy.
- 44:34You know, like there's petrol stations that ran out of diesel
- 44:37and we're a very big country.
- 44:39It takes a lot of diesel to move stuff around.
- 44:40We consume a ton of it.
- 44:42And it got to the point where the Prime Minister is saying,
- 44:44you know, we're glad we secured X million litres,
- 44:47not barrels, litres of diesel.
- 44:50And you run on the back of a napkin, you're like,
- 44:52That's three days.
- 44:53One day.
- 44:54So you're telling me that it is so bad
- 44:56that you're willing to get on television
- 44:57and tell people you bought one day worth of diesel.
- 45:00That's crazy.
- 45:00No wonder your bonds are going higher because you're bankrupt.
- 45:03Australia's in a strange position at the moment
- 45:05we are and I'm hoping but I'm not
- 45:08hopeful that it's the
- 45:10kick in the nuts we need to go
- 45:12hey we should probably we dig a lot
- 45:14of stuff out of the ground we process none
- 45:16of it we are totally reliant on other countries
- 45:18to survive which is not really
- 45:20a good spot to be in
- 45:21that's cope
- 45:22that's cope
- 45:23explain the fact that you're saying you're hopeful
- 45:27I am hopeful
- 45:28I'm the optimist
- 45:30I think being a pessimist I think the bears
- 45:32have no ambition.
- 45:34Delete the bears.
- 45:35Ignore the bears.
- 45:36I think bears have no ambition.
- 45:37I mean, I'm hopeful.
- 45:38Sorry, I'm not hopeful it will happen,
- 45:41but I do hope that there's enough people.
- 45:42And I've had enough conversations
- 45:44with people who have no interest
- 45:46in any of this stuff,
- 45:47who have suddenly gone,
- 45:49really, we had no fuel on land?
- 45:52And like even the storage capacity, right?
- 45:55I think it's the IEA,
- 45:56requires you have 90 days worth of fuel.
- 45:58That's not on your shores.
- 46:00That's just on someone's shores.
- 46:01I think Australia's was in the US.
- 46:02That's purely just to flood the market with oil.
- 46:05It's a price thing. It's not a you have your supplies thing.
- 46:09I believe that we will now go through a process of saying
- 46:11we probably should have some reserves on land.
- 46:15Obviously.
- 46:16No shit.
- 46:18What do you think this is going to mean for Walsh coming in as Fed chair?
- 46:21Because everyone expected him to come in and cut rates,
- 46:24but that seems like he can't really do that right now.
- 46:26Yeah, look, I mean, I've never been a Fed watcher.
- 46:29I'm a civil engineer.
- 46:30I don't think the Fed matters, honestly.
- 46:32I think the Fed follows what the bond market does.
- 46:35I think they just follow the market.
- 46:37I think we're in a world, if you just take Lin's perspective,
- 46:41what they do with interest rates is kind of irrelevant.
- 46:43It's all in the short-term end.
- 46:46Honestly, who cares when the government's the one spending the money
- 46:49in fiscal dominance?
- 46:49It just doesn't matter, right?
- 46:51If banks were lending a ton of money, it would matter.
- 46:53I just don't think the Fed and central banks matter that much.
- 46:55But what do you think this means then for normal people?
- 46:57Do you think people can expect inflation to go higher over the next few years?
- 47:01And rates to go higher.
- 47:02And rates to go higher.
- 47:02I think it's going to punch.
- 47:04It's painful.
- 47:05Yeah.
- 47:05No, it is.
- 47:06And that's kind of the world I think we're moving towards.
- 47:09And it's one of those things for you to think about it.
- 47:12Bitcoin has thought about this stuff for a long time, but then to live it and feel it
- 47:15and experience it, it's a whole different thing.
- 47:17But what does Bitcoin do in that environment, do you think?
- 47:20So at the end of the day, what we're looking at is liabilities or obligations, getting
- 47:25two big, say, sailors set up, not that I'm saying it's equivalent, there is a price or a value where
- 47:32your obligations are larger than your assets. And the more people, this is why you want out of the
- 47:39system, gold, Bitcoin, this is why sound money, what sound money advocates always talk about,
- 47:44you want to have assets outside the system that are underbaseable because everything else is
- 47:49going to be debased. When the times get tough, go to Satmojo's thing. What is the problem? That
- 47:57the button exists and they're going to push the button. They're going to push the button because
- 48:00it's the only way they can do it. Now, ironically, Australia right now is attempting austerity
- 48:04by raising taxes. They're trying to not push the button, to be fair. But the problem is it's made
- 48:09everyone significantly poorer, will make everyone significantly poorer. We will see how much
- 48:13stomach they have for austerity because I think they're going to end up just reverting back to
- 48:17the printer. The worst scenario is they go austerity and the printer, because then you're
- 48:20just royally fucked. Because like with bond rates, so in the UK, I think it's the highest
- 48:26since the late 90s. US, higher since just before the financial crisis. If bond yields are like
- 48:33risk-free rate is five and a half percent or whatever, what does that mean for risk assets?
- 48:37Because they've got to really perform to be attractive. Well, gold has always traded inversely
- 48:42to the real yield on the 10-year until they froze Russia's reserves.
- 48:47We're in an era where the monetary system is changing, as we know.
- 48:50This is the period of tumultuous change.
- 48:53The world is going to look very different on the other side of this thing.
- 48:56If we're going through all of these structural reforms
- 48:58of what the savings currency is.
- 49:01Now, I'm very much in the world where you have to separate
- 49:04the global reserve currency, global reserve asset.
- 49:07One is medium of exchange, one is savings.
- 49:09We've actually seen this in a microcosm in just the Bitcoin crypto world.
- 49:12stable coins are the medium of exchange, Bitcoin's been the store of value.
- 49:15This breaking apart of those two components of money, I think,
- 49:19is we're separating the treasury from the dollar.
- 49:21The dollar will continue to be the medium of exchange.
- 49:23I think that's very, very clear.
- 49:25It's why Brent Johnson's, I think Brent Johnson is dead right
- 49:28with his milkshake theory.
- 49:30If you look back at all the money printing that's happened,
- 49:32all of COVID, everything, the wars, everything the US has got into,
- 49:37really the DXY hasn't softened in like decades.
- 49:43Just been stronger.
- 49:44Just staying around 100.
- 49:46It goes through ebbs and flows,
- 49:48but it really hasn't gone down
- 49:49the way a lot of people would have expected.
- 49:51Given how much of an exorbitant privilege
- 49:53they've exercised,
- 49:55the dollar's just not going down.
- 49:57Bonds are down 50 odd percent since 2022
- 49:59and going lower as rates go higher.
- 50:01So the asset is getting crushed
- 50:04and gold's up significantly.
- 50:05And by the way,
- 50:07Bitcoin is also up significantly over that period of time.
- 50:10It's down short term, but it is also up significantly.
- 50:12So my general view is, are we moving towards a world
- 50:16where we trust each other more?
- 50:17That we trust governments more?
- 50:18Absolutely not.
- 50:19Am I going to buy more government bonds in the road ahead?
- 50:22Am I going to buy more gold and Bitcoin?
- 50:23The answer is very, very clear to me.
- 50:25And so do you think that the asset side of that
- 50:29will be a mixture of things like gold and Bitcoin
- 50:31rather than one dominant?
- 50:33I think so, yeah.
- 50:34And I've used this example.
- 50:36I have gold and Bitcoin as my two primary holdings.
- 50:39Gold is the exact same trade.
- 50:41It's just slower.
- 50:42If it's down 20%, I'm not that fussed.
- 50:44Bitcoin being down 50%,
- 50:46I'd really hate to have to sell it to do anything.
- 50:48Down 50%, couldn't care less
- 50:50if I had to sell my gold down 20%.
- 50:51It's ballast.
- 50:52I'd never fully understand the reason you hold gold.
- 50:55Because you always say it's because
- 50:56you don't mind selling gold.
- 50:57But if you think Bitcoin has more of an upside,
- 50:59would you not rather have more Bitcoin
- 51:00and sell less Bitcoin in the future?
- 51:01No, Bitcoin is a longer duration.
- 51:03Even though gold's an infinite duration asset,
- 51:05Bitcoin is an even longer duration asset.
- 51:07So the way I think about it, I think it is improbable.
- 51:11And even if it does happen, gold going to $20,000 an ounce, right?
- 51:15Going to $5,000 is a double from its peak, more or less.
- 51:18I think that's in the cards.
- 51:20Is a double going to change my life?
- 51:23Probably not.
- 51:25Probably not.
- 51:26Bitcoin going from $100,000 to $1,000,000 or from $60,000 to $1,000,000, totally feasible,
- 51:33totally practicable.
- 51:34is that going to change my life? Yeah, big time. So what do I want to put, what do I save in Bitcoin
- 51:40for? My kid's school fees. He's eight months old. That's a long, that's 10 years away, right? So I've
- 51:45got 10 years to let Bitcoin do its thing. What about a house deposit? I may want that in the
- 51:51next three years, two years, one year. Gold, the right place for that deposit. Clearing my mortgage,
- 51:57my 30-year mortgage, Bitcoin. It's about duration, right? Gold simply doesn't have, it's got a lot
- 52:03growth in it. It just simply doesn't have the growth multiple that Bitcoin does. So I position
- 52:08my savings. That's why I just really don't care what either of them doing truly. But
- 52:11that was my general thesis. I don't want to hold cash. If, by the way, I go, okay, now is the time
- 52:18I really do want to start looking to buy and I'm going to auctions, it won't be in gold. It'll be
- 52:24in cash, in a term deposit somewhere or in a bank account. Because the idea is I now actually need
- 52:29the dollars, right? And I can't take the volatility. So it's me peeling back, where is my volatility
- 52:34tolerance? I'm willing to take volatility, right? On the correct timeframe. Okay, fair. Because I
- 52:40end up postponing my life because Bitcoin is not the price I'm willing to sell. Precisely. Yeah.
- 52:45Precisely. What if I don't want to postpone my life? We were talking about this at lunch.
- 52:48You may not want to postpone your life. And sometimes parts of life are more important than
- 52:53money. Yeah. And the dollars and the numbers and value of your assets. Sometimes you just actually
- 52:57You want to live.
- 52:58Sometimes you've got a family
- 52:59and their needs come before yours
- 53:00of saying, hey, I'd love to get to this value,
- 53:02but really want a house.
- 53:04Really want that holiday.
- 53:05Really want whatever
- 53:05because I've only got 80, 90 years here.
- 53:09And, you know, you get old eventually
- 53:11and you can't do those things.
- 53:12If you're not going to live it,
- 53:13what's the point of being here?
- 53:14Yeah, 100%.
- 53:15You said before the monetary system is changing.
- 53:18Like that's clearer than ever.
- 53:19And I think the stuff that's happening
- 53:21with Iran taking payment in Bitcoin is huge.
- 53:24It's wild, isn't it?
- 53:24It's wild.
- 53:25Have you seen the thing that came out
- 53:26in the last day or two, which is them-
- 53:28They've got like an insurance company
- 53:29that takes Bitcoin.
- 53:31Yeah, because Tether froze their stable coins.
- 53:33Exactly.
- 53:33Surprise, surprise.
- 53:34But do you think this is like,
- 53:35that we'll look back at this
- 53:36as being a pinnacle moment in the shifting-
- 53:38I don't know if this was the pinnacle moment.
- 53:40Honestly, this, you know, if we really look back,
- 53:45US freezing Russia's reserves in 2022 was the event.
- 53:48That was the thing.
- 53:49Everything else is just a transition towards sound money
- 53:52and then people realizing,
- 53:53do I want a piece of metal in my vault
- 53:55that I can't sell or do I want something that's liquid and digital,
- 53:59that's global and is actually, you know, think about it, it's kind of better.
- 54:03Oh, and by the way, I can actually do this multi-sig thing set up
- 54:06where I can have security around the world.
- 54:09We're in just that process of we're moving towards the sound money backing
- 54:13because it has to because of all those people just lose all trust.
- 54:17And then it's just a game between, you know, who's younger and who's older, right?
- 54:21Bitcoin will progress one funeral at a time.
- 54:23That's kind of the framework.
- 54:25The reason I do think it's a pivotal change is like,
- 54:27I agree it starts with the freezing of the Russian treasuries.
- 54:30Like that was, like Luke Graham calls it,
- 54:31the shot that was heard across the world.
- 54:33And I don't think Iran will be doing this unless that happens.
- 54:36Agree.
- 54:36But the fact that this is the first time we've seen Bitcoin
- 54:39in the wild being used in this way by a nation state,
- 54:43in a clear attempt to basically go around sanctions,
- 54:47I think is huge.
- 54:48I listened to a podcast many years ago.
- 54:50I didn't, to be honest, I can't even tell you what podcast it was,
- 54:53who the guy was, so whoever it was, good shout.
- 54:56He was an oil trader.
- 54:57And he was just, I found it amazing.
- 54:59He was discussing how oil tankers work.
- 55:01And they really are just merchants that just go,
- 55:03oh, there's oil over there.
- 55:04We'll go and pick it up.
- 55:05Here's the price.
- 55:06Okay, now we've got a buyer.
- 55:07It just-
- 55:08They're doing arbitrage.
- 55:09Doing arbitrage in physical world, right?
- 55:11And the idea is that you pull up somewhere
- 55:13on a port in Africa and you need to get the local currency
- 55:15and you got forex pairs and the banks freeze it.
- 55:18And he's like, Bitcoin's just such an amazing asset.
- 55:20When you really think about its use case there,
- 55:23head office in New York can wire the Bitcoin straight to someone on country X.
- 55:29They can get an exchange rate everywhere.
- 55:31And that's the other thing, right?
- 55:32Bitcoin's one of the few assets.
- 55:33Gold, the dollar, trades everywhere in every currency.
- 55:37You have a forex exchange.
- 55:38I mean, the Australian dollar does not have an exchange rate in most currencies.
- 55:41It's just true, right?
- 55:42So it's a kind of example of, yeah, digital is actually a lot better
- 55:48than a hunk of metal that you need bolt cutters to chop into.
- 55:52And it's highly liquid in most of the world
- 55:54and liquid to a degree in all of the world.
- 55:56I saw a video the other day.
- 55:58I'm not sure who the bloke was,
- 56:00but I've seen his face.
- 56:01He's, you know, a very renowned gold bug.
- 56:05He was standing there in front of a table twice as big as this,
- 56:07covered in these, like, 50-ton, you know,
- 56:10massive blocks of silver.
- 56:11And he's got this big bar of gold, and he goes,
- 56:13did you know that all this silver is worth half as much
- 56:16as this gold bar?
- 56:17And I just retweeted and said, bro, get a cold card.
- 56:19What do you do?
- 56:20Seriously?
- 56:21Like, look at all this metal. What are you going to do with it? Ridiculous.
- 56:24So I get it, final settlement. But like, guys, it's time to move on.
- 56:29And it'll happen. It's a process.
- 56:31Should we get on to the Australia fuckery?
- 56:33I think so.
- 56:34When I turned up today, you're normally like dead upbeat, super happy.
- 56:38I turn up today and you were dejected.
- 56:39It's been a shit week. It's been a shit two weeks.
- 56:42So loads of people listening won't know exactly what's happened.
- 56:45Do you want to just lay out everything that's happened?
- 56:47Yeah, sure. So first things first,
- 56:50none of this is signed into law yet.
- 56:52The odds are it is likely to happen, however.
- 56:55So short story is for, I think it's since 1999,
- 56:58we've had a capital gains tax set up in Australia
- 57:02where whatever your gain is,
- 57:04so you've got your cost basis of $100,
- 57:05you sell it for $200, if you held it for a year,
- 57:08that $100 is not taxable, you halve it,
- 57:10$50 is taxable.
- 57:12Now, this 50% cap gains accounts for a whole lot of things.
- 57:15The holding time, inflation over that period.
- 57:17there's also the idea that you kind of accrued the wealth
- 57:22over the whole holding time
- 57:23but you realize it on the same day that you sell it
- 57:25kind of accounts for all of those nuances
- 57:27but most importantly
- 57:29it allows people to save and grow wealth
- 57:31yep
- 57:32just to be clear
- 57:34so it's 50% cap gains
- 57:36if you hold an asset for over a year
- 57:37you get a 50% discount
- 57:38discount
- 57:38so then whatever's left over
- 57:40that $50 is times your marginal tax rate
- 57:43now we have a tiered tax system
- 57:45so the lower you are
- 57:46the lower your tax is.
- 57:48For very low-income people, this can resolve to less than 12%,
- 57:52which kind of is a good idea, right?
- 57:54You want people who have less money to be able to save better
- 57:56and have a more favorable system.
- 57:57The higher up you are, our top marginal tax bracket is $190,000.
- 58:02And $190,000, I mean, it's $0.70 to the dollar
- 58:06for Americans listening.
- 58:07So it's like $135,000.
- 58:10That's where you start getting slugged with 45%.
- 58:12Then we have the 2% Medicare levy.
- 58:13So your tax rate is 47%, marginal, above 135 US.
- 58:19Now, the Labor government, as in all their infinite wisdom,
- 58:23has come out with a budget.
- 58:24Now, the budget is not in effect,
- 58:28but Labor can push it through the, alone,
- 58:31can push it through the lower house, the House of Reps.
- 58:34And then the Senate, if they just pair with the Greens,
- 58:36and can anybody point to a situation where the Greens
- 58:39haven't supported more tax,
- 58:40they have exactly the amount of votes
- 58:42that they need to push it through the Senate.
- 58:43So this thing has a very clear path straight through.
- 58:46Now, Australia has the housing bubble of all housing bubbles.
- 58:49There's very few.
- 58:50I mean, Canada, you know what this is all about.
- 58:52I think Switzerland and New Zealand, we're all looking at each other going,
- 58:55who's the bigger idiot here?
- 58:57The median Australian house apartment dwelling countrywide is a million Aussie,
- 59:02720 US.
- 59:04That's the median.
- 59:05The median salary is 74K.
- 59:08The mean is 82.
- 59:09the median worker saving in a 5% bank deposit will take 40 years to save the deposit for a
- 59:18median house or apartment dwelling. Insane. Doesn't make sense. Now, there's going to be people saying
- 59:23move regional or whatever. It's like, yeah, that's fine. Obviously, we're talking about means and
- 59:27medians here. I'm not going to go through every state and country and city. So the idea is they've
- 59:31brought in this budget and they're overhauling our tax system. This is effectively a currency
- 59:37devaluation, more or less. But it's a very, they've pitched it saying it's going to benefit
- 59:42young people trying to buy housing. Now, there's a bunch of things in terms of negative gearing,
- 59:46where you can offset your, you know, if you're losing money on the rent, you know, you're kind
- 59:50of banking on the capital appreciation of the property. So you'll lose on the rent, offset your
- 59:53tax. I'm not going to talk about that. That's its own beast. But they snuck in there. The pitch is,
- 59:59we want to make it easier for young people to save for a house. The median young person has a low
- 1:00:04income, it's going to take them 40 years to save in cash for the deposit.
- 1:00:09So they have to save in assets.
- 1:00:11And these bastards snuck in there that they're going to put a, they're removing the 50% cap
- 1:00:15gains discount on all assets, ETFs, shares, Bitcoin, the whole lot.
- 1:00:20And you're going to get an indexation method.
- 1:00:22So that means your $100 cost basis goes up to $103 with CPI, then goes up another 3%,
- 1:00:28then goes up another 3%.
- 1:00:29So if you just think about that, if you hold it for a year in the current system, you would
- 1:00:33get, you make $100, you take off 50%, you've got $50, that's applied to your marginal tax rate.
- 1:00:40Now, you take off 3% and the $97 is added to your income at your marginal tax rate,
- 1:00:47and at a minimum of 30%. So the people who are on the lowest marginal tax bracket
- 1:00:50suddenly have to pay 30% gains, not 12 or 1 or 2 or 5, whatever that works out to.
- 1:00:56If you think about what this has done, and there's this system, they're only doing partial
- 1:01:00grandfathering, which is also a scam.
- 1:01:02As far as I'm aware, almost every tax
- 1:01:04reform in Australia,
- 1:01:06if you held assets under the old
- 1:01:08system, they remain under the old system.
- 1:01:11The problem is that the 1st of July 2027 you move you kind of index your value everything up to that point unrealized is at the 50 current system and everything from that point
- 1:01:22onwards is indexed.
- 1:01:24So here's the thing, they're not indexing your tax bracket, but they are indexing your
- 1:01:27capital gains.
- 1:01:29If you're someone like me who has, we kind of, I will straddle my 10-year goal of saving
- 1:01:34for a house, my 10-year goal of paying for my kids' school fees, my tax goes up by about
- 1:01:3840 to 50%.
- 1:01:40Just like the component.
- 1:01:41So that's effectively, when you look at it,
- 1:01:43they're already taking 25% more or less.
- 1:01:47When you do your marginal tax rate, 50%,
- 1:01:49they're taking about 25%.
- 1:01:50That goes up to about 40%.
- 1:01:52Insane.
- 1:01:53So they're more or less,
- 1:01:55for people who are on full indexation,
- 1:01:57which is young people,
- 1:01:58they've doubled the tax.
- 1:02:00So in order to get on the first rung of the housing ladder,
- 1:02:03you need to climb the principal ladder,
- 1:02:06the primary ladder, which is your asset portfolio.
- 1:02:08So the assets that you're saving in, they're now going to tax it two times as much.
- 1:02:13So for me, someone who straddles that world over the next 10 years, they're going to take about 20% to 30% of my savings.
- 1:02:19For someone who is coming into that system, if you're a startup, you start a successful business.
- 1:02:25It's worth half a million bucks.
- 1:02:27Your cost basis is zero.
- 1:02:29What's 3% CPI on zero?
- 1:02:31Also zero.
- 1:02:32So you owe the government full 47% of your sale price.
- 1:02:36and this is why you'll see a lot of memes of people inserting our prime minister and saying
- 1:02:41welcome to our 47 shareholder you take none of the risk you put none of the capital up front you pay
- 1:02:46none of the expenses but you show up on payday for 47 of the value so the great irony of this
- 1:02:53whole thing is that it locks in people who already own property there's just so many other layers to
- 1:02:59this people who already own property they get to keep all their negative gearing discounts
- 1:03:04and if you buy new homes off the plan, you also get to do the current tax setup.
- 1:03:11So what they've actually done is got all the young people who want to buy a home
- 1:03:14and said, you're now going to compete with 100% of investors all vying for new homes,
- 1:03:18not old builds.
- 1:03:20So the whole setup doesn't help young people save.
- 1:03:24I ran the numbers on depending on the growth of your asset.
- 1:03:27Now, most people, if you're on 5% or 10% or 15%,
- 1:03:32it's adding eight to five years to your savings goal.
- 1:03:37And that's if you're on the full indexation.
- 1:03:40If you're owning an asset that goes up 50% a year,
- 1:03:42which, guys, doesn't happen for a decade,
- 1:03:45then they take about a year.
- 1:03:47I ran another model saying, well, here's the current school fees,
- 1:03:50a typical private school.
- 1:03:51Now, by the way, owning a home and sending a kid to private school,
- 1:03:54These aren't what I would call high net worth, upper high net worth things.
- 1:03:58These are-
- 1:03:59This is middle class.
- 1:03:59This is middle class.
- 1:04:00I literally want to give my kid a good education type stuff.
- 1:04:03Aspirational things.
- 1:04:04Yeah.
- 1:04:04It adds, I worked at how many years, because school fees are 15 to 25 grand a year per kid,
- 1:04:10going up at 8%, the debasement rate pretty typically.
- 1:04:13And I asked the question, how many years of school fees,
- 1:04:15if I just buy one Bitcoin now at 100 grand Australian, it's approximately the price,
- 1:04:19how many years can I peel off to cover all the school fees?
- 1:04:24How many years of school fees is it worth if it goes up at X percent?
- 1:04:28The general framework is that this new tax system
- 1:04:30removes approximately one to two years' worth of school fees per child.
- 1:04:35So you go, how have you benefited me as a young person?
- 1:04:38I'm in my mid-30s.
- 1:04:39I've been saving to buy a house for a decade.
- 1:04:41You've added two to three years to my most optimistic case
- 1:04:44of when I actually step into the market,
- 1:04:46and my boy just lost a year of school fees.
- 1:04:49And by the way, I've got to pick between those two.
- 1:04:51If I buy the house, it's harder to pay for the school fees.
- 1:04:54And you just look at this and go, how have my framework was?
- 1:04:59I'm like, I'm no genius, right?
- 1:05:01I think about a lot of stuff.
- 1:05:03I'm smarter than your average bear, right?
- 1:05:05Enough to be an engineer at least.
- 1:05:07It took me five seconds to go,
- 1:05:08something's fucking wrong with this budget.
- 1:05:10And then it took me about 10 minutes
- 1:05:12to go through just with an LLM and say,
- 1:05:14can you just model this out just to stress test it,
- 1:05:17testing a couple of LLNs to make sure they're not hallucinating anything. Come back with the same
- 1:05:20numbers and go, it took me 10 minutes to work out that this is not going to benefit young people in
- 1:05:24any way, shape or form. In fact, it makes it considerably worse. I'm in the camp where you
- 1:05:28can look at this whole setup and go, for politicians, there's generally two reasons they make bad
- 1:05:33decisions. Incompetence, door number one. Malice, door number two. I fall on the spectrum where I
- 1:05:39think, generally speaking, I like to give them the benefit of the doubt of being morons and just
- 1:05:46being incompetent with a bunch of stakeholders involved, all that, you know. In this case,
- 1:05:52you're telling me not, and here's the kicker. They broke a lot of like, the electric promises
- 1:05:57they made was specifically, we won't do what we just did. Like, when you think about that as a
- 1:06:03business, right? If I was to make a big decision, like, I know, I'm going to start supporting
- 1:06:08Ethereum in my data. That's a huge reputational risk. It's also something I'm not going to do,
- 1:06:12by the way. But I would have gone through countless hours of study and thought. And,
- 1:06:17you know, if I'm going to make a big decision, it's going to change my reputation forever.
- 1:06:22I would think about it. If it took me five seconds of thought, 10 seconds with an LLM,
- 1:06:27you're telling me not a single staffer did this. And if the staffer did do this,
- 1:06:30and they're aware of it, then it's malice. So I just look at this and go, and I know there's
- 1:06:36going to be folks in the audience going, that's always malice. I'm like, yeah, that's fine. But
- 1:06:40In this case, it's really hard to argue against that.
- 1:06:43Do you think it's that they're so out of touch
- 1:06:44that these boomers think that the way people are saving their houses
- 1:06:47is by squirrelling money away in a bank account
- 1:06:49and not investing in assets?
- 1:06:50So this is what I've been puzzling over.
- 1:06:52Who are the people they're interviewing to come to this decision?
- 1:06:55Because I have in my mind's eye what they look like,
- 1:06:57and I'm pretty sure they shouldn't be asking those people
- 1:06:58anything to do with investing.
- 1:07:01It's quite interesting because the media,
- 1:07:04and you look at the propaganda arm, ABC,
- 1:07:08you look at how they're pitching this whole thing.
- 1:07:10you really had to work very hard to find anywhere they talked about the fact that they snuck it in for all assets.
- 1:07:16They did have a three-minute video that I watched where they talk about it.
- 1:07:19And they, and I shit you not, they make the suggestion that this might actually make investing in government bonds a more attractive thing.
- 1:07:27And by the way, to their credit, that is true.
- 1:07:30If you buy an asset that underperforms CPI inflation of 3%, you are correct.
- 1:07:35The current indexation method is much better for your tax.
- 1:07:38You're also poor.
- 1:07:39So you just look at this setup and go,
- 1:07:40they kind of want people to buy shitty government paper.
- 1:07:44And the higher your growth asset,
- 1:07:46the more indexation doesn't help you at all.
- 1:07:47Bitcoin goes up 25%, 20%,
- 1:07:49and you take a 3% indexation, it's irrelevant.
- 1:07:52You're a startup with a zero cost basis.
- 1:07:53Indexation does nothing for you.
- 1:07:55And you just look at this whole thing.
- 1:07:56This is a tax grab of all tax grabs.
- 1:07:59And ironically, people didn't vote for this
- 1:08:01because the election promise was,
- 1:08:02and by the way, I'm not going to pretend
- 1:08:04that I trust politicians in the first place.
- 1:08:06And I certainly didn't vote for Labor.
- 1:08:08But it's kind of interesting to see.
- 1:08:10I know there's been a lot of backlash.
- 1:08:11That's why you'll see a lot of millennials posting photos of Albo, right,
- 1:08:15with a triangle as part of a band saying, you know, good meme, Daz,
- 1:08:18saying welcome to the team for doing jack shit of the work and taking 47%
- 1:08:23because that's effectively what it is.
- 1:08:24It is much the same as a currency devaluation.
- 1:08:28They devalue the savings of all Australians who hold assets.
- 1:08:33There's a bunch of people out there who are gnashing their teeth saying,
- 1:08:35bro, just leave.
- 1:08:36We also have an exit tax.
- 1:08:37The day you get on the plane, you realize everything.
- 1:08:39So basically we've got a period of time here where you've got to fight back
- 1:08:42because if you don't fight back and you don't send an email,
- 1:08:46a politely worded email saying, listen here, dickhead,
- 1:08:49what are you doing?
- 1:08:50You can't support this to your local MP.
- 1:08:51You've got to do what you can.
- 1:08:53Yes, there's an exit route.
- 1:08:55That's one pathway.
- 1:08:56But the vast, vast majority of people simply are not going to pick up,
- 1:09:00leave their family, leave their friends, sell their apartment,
- 1:09:02sell their house, sell their clothes and move overseas
- 1:09:05and then pay an exit tax,
- 1:09:07which will take 30%, 40% of their assets anyway.
- 1:09:10Most people are just simply not going to do that.
- 1:09:13So what do we do in the meantime?
- 1:09:14Because you've got to make an uproar.
- 1:09:16In this instance, you just...
- 1:09:17And I'm not a...
- 1:09:17I don't go to rallies.
- 1:09:18I'm not a political dude.
- 1:09:19It's one of those things where they have truly, truly...
- 1:09:23Yeah, they're fucked over the average Australian.
- 1:09:24You've got to do something.
- 1:09:25But the indexing is a scam as well
- 1:09:26because we know the CPI numbers are caught to be favourable.
- 1:09:29Of course.
- 1:09:29Like, it's all a scam.
- 1:09:30They can raise taxes by fudging the CPI numbers.
- 1:09:34Your asset has a bad year.
- 1:09:36Let's just imagine there's some kind of hit to the AI sector in June 2027
- 1:09:41and all those assets sell off 50%.
- 1:09:43Bang, your index of the 1st of July 2027.
- 1:09:46That's your new cost basis.
- 1:09:47You don't get the 50% cap gains on everything before that.
- 1:09:50The accounting nightmare of the whole thing is just, yeah, it's wild.
- 1:09:53Do you think this will definitely go through?
- 1:09:56I think it's a very good test.
- 1:09:58So the reason why I wrote a piece on this called
- 1:10:01When the Government Pulls the Rug, which is free,
- 1:10:03so people can read it.
- 1:10:04For non-Australians,
- 1:10:07don't believe they're not cooking this stuff
- 1:10:09in your neck of the woods.
- 1:10:09Oh, 100%.
- 1:10:10So this is a warning shot.
- 1:10:13To be very fair to them,
- 1:10:15as much as I oppose it heavily,
- 1:10:17I think it's a terrible idea,
- 1:10:18at least they're levying just a straight tax.
- 1:10:21They're going to inflate the money as well,
- 1:10:22but at least they're saying
- 1:10:23we're going to tax you outright.
- 1:10:26What will be very interesting,
- 1:10:27they're attempting austerity.
- 1:10:29What will be very interesting
- 1:10:30is this is a trial balloon for the rest of the world.
- 1:10:32how willing are the australian people to accept tightening of the belts for somebody else's excess
- 1:10:39and my answer is not not and it's not because it's tightening the belt because you're going to
- 1:10:45the money away anyway 100 if you had of actually and this is the thing if they had have come out
- 1:10:50with a tightening the belt tax policy that wasn't an outright scam and helped young people like i
- 1:10:56don't know all the existing properties you can't negative gear as well and sorry we're not going
- 1:11:02grant like or we just limit it to property they would clearly never do that though because like
- 1:11:06australia runs on the housing market so here well and this is the thing that i think is very
- 1:11:09interesting i think they've just pricked the housing bubble because first of all most we were
- 1:11:14just running out of buyers the numbers were so high you know they talk about median to median
- 1:11:20income to property price um and i think five is where they deem it unaffordable they literally
- 1:11:26invented a new bracket for australia called impossibly unaffordable above 15 right sydney's
- 1:11:31the second most expensive place in the world short of Hong Kong.
- 1:11:34So you look at all these dynamics, you go,
- 1:11:35I think they've pricked the housing bubble.
- 1:11:37Why?
- 1:11:37Because people no longer have certainty.
- 1:11:39They know the rules are going to change.
- 1:11:40So to come back to your original question,
- 1:11:42I believe this is a trial balloon where they're trying to see
- 1:11:44how willing are people to accept changes of this magnitude.
- 1:11:48If they had to come out and put in hard changes
- 1:11:51that would be difficult for the economy to manage
- 1:11:53but were directionally correct,
- 1:11:56that really did give people who were younger an opportunity.
- 1:11:58And I think about this like I'm actually lucky
- 1:12:01that I'm going to straddle this system.
- 1:12:03The poor people who come into this thing
- 1:12:05who are young now have no hope.
- 1:12:07They're going to get hit with a full indexation.
- 1:12:09It's a scam for their whole career.
- 1:12:10It's wrong.
- 1:12:11So if they had have said,
- 1:12:13tighten your belts and done it correctly
- 1:12:14and done a bunch of modeling
- 1:12:15that when I run the numbers,
- 1:12:17I go, look, I may not agree with all of it,
- 1:12:19but directionally, fair enough.
- 1:12:21I'll support it.
- 1:12:22But they came out
- 1:12:23and they just slugged everybody with a true scam
- 1:12:25and it's like, I just can't.
- 1:12:26If you own Bitcoin today,
- 1:12:27after these rules come into effect,
- 1:12:28does the Bitcoin get grandfathered
- 1:12:30into the new system.
- 1:12:31No, so it's partial grandfathering,
- 1:12:33which again is a scam in its own right.
- 1:12:34Whatever the price is,
- 1:12:35let's say you just bought it,
- 1:12:3630 grand Aussie, right?
- 1:12:39Whatever that is in US terms.
- 1:12:40You buy 30 grand and the price is 100 grand
- 1:12:43on the 1st of July, 2027.
- 1:12:46That 70 grand gain times your Bitcoin value,
- 1:12:50that 70 grand gain gets the 50%
- 1:12:51and then your cost basis in the indexation method
- 1:12:54is 100,000.
- 1:12:55So then you tack on 3% or whatever CPI bullshit is.
- 1:12:58So that's why you're saying you straddle it.
- 1:12:59Correct.
- 1:13:00So if you think about it, if I was full indexation, the 97% of every gain every year is fully taxable.
- 1:13:08Whereas for me, the first part of Bitcoin's journey is 50% cap gains and then everything after that,
- 1:13:14which by the way, I don't buy, this is why it's a real scam.
- 1:13:18I didn't buy Bitcoin for one year.
- 1:13:20I bought it for my kid's school fees before I even had a kid.
- 1:13:23You know what I mean?
- 1:13:24I'm thinking more than a decade out, that decade is now going to be under the indexation method.
- 1:13:29Right?
- 1:13:30And sorry, it's actually getting beyond the point.
- 1:13:33The indexation method alone is a scam.
- 1:13:35Index the salary brackets.
- 1:13:36And you listen to the politicians on the news recently
- 1:13:39and they say, are you going to index salary brackets?
- 1:13:42They go, oh, no, I can't do that.
- 1:13:43It's like, what do you mean you can't do that?
- 1:13:44You can index your taxes,
- 1:13:46but you're not going to index people's incomes?
- 1:13:47I mean, malice.
- 1:13:48Yeah.
- 1:13:50What do you think Bitcoiners in Australia
- 1:13:52that aren't going to leave should be doing?
- 1:13:53Is this time to call your accountant?
- 1:13:54Get a good accountant.
- 1:13:56Yeah.
- 1:13:56And not because you're doing anything wrong,
- 1:13:58but because they know how the system works.
- 1:14:00And a wise man once told me that when you squeeze the right-hand side
- 1:14:03of the tax balloon, it creates opportunities on the left-hand side.
- 1:14:06Tax is a complex system.
- 1:14:08When something breaks or they change the rules over here,
- 1:14:12it opens opportunities over here, right?
- 1:14:14So a good accountant will understand the mechanics
- 1:14:18of how this stuff works way more than you and I do
- 1:14:21because it's not our job, you know what I mean?
- 1:14:23So find a good accountant.
- 1:14:25And the other one, the Australian Bitcoin industry body,
- 1:14:27they've got a whole page, click on the link on their site
- 1:14:30for Bitcoiners.
- 1:14:31They've literally got a template
- 1:14:31that you can send to your MP,
- 1:14:33a politely worded letter
- 1:14:34that just says,
- 1:14:35listen, I've run the numbers.
- 1:14:36It really just makes it
- 1:14:38a whole lot worse for young people.
- 1:14:39And if you're supporting it,
- 1:14:40really can't support you.
- 1:14:42I mean, borrowing against your Bitcoin
- 1:14:43has never looked so attractive.
- 1:14:45Yeah, there's also,
- 1:14:45I mean, yes,
- 1:14:46that's certainly an approach.
- 1:14:47There's trade-offs to that as well, right?
- 1:14:49However, it's custody.
- 1:14:51Some people just don't want debt.
- 1:14:52There's a bunch of layers to that.
- 1:14:54But at the end of the day,
- 1:14:55the system is disproportionately,
- 1:14:57I actually think this is more
- 1:14:59of a principled thing.
- 1:15:00you have pitched this as improving housing
- 1:15:02and improving affordability for young people.
- 1:15:04You have kicked the rungs out of the pre-ladder
- 1:15:08just to get on the first rung of the housing ladder
- 1:15:10for young people forever.
- 1:15:13It's just untenable.
- 1:15:14You just got to push back and say it is unacceptable.
- 1:15:17I mean, I guess the hope is that they have
- 1:15:18pricked the housing bubble,
- 1:15:19because if they have,
- 1:15:20the pressure they're going to get
- 1:15:21to not push this through will be unreal.
- 1:15:23Yeah, and that's why I said it's a trial balloon.
- 1:15:24We will see what the consultation process looks like,
- 1:15:28because it would amaze me if they didn't know
- 1:15:31that this pushback was coming,
- 1:15:33but then you get into the world of incompetence, right?
- 1:15:35Where they inflate their egos and say,
- 1:15:37oh, they're going to love it.
- 1:15:38And then it actually comes out and people go,
- 1:15:39nah, mate, this isn't it.
- 1:15:42So it'll be very interesting to see whether they back down.
- 1:15:44So this is a very Australia-specific thing,
- 1:15:47but I think the interesting part of this is,
- 1:15:49like, yes, it's fucked.
- 1:15:50Yes, it's a scam.
- 1:15:51But this isn't going to end in Australia.
- 1:15:53Absolutely not.
- 1:15:54Like, this is the kind of thing
- 1:15:55that will spread throughout the world.
- 1:15:56Correct.
- 1:15:56And I think it's very important
- 1:15:58and we push back hard.
- 1:15:59No, I agree.
- 1:16:00And it's very simple.
- 1:16:01Like, you know, my parents aren't overly politically active.
- 1:16:04I just, and by the way, neither am I.
- 1:16:06Yeah, me neither.
- 1:16:07No, I honestly couldn't care less.
- 1:16:08I wanted as little of the government in my life as possible.
- 1:16:11We're having conversations with them.
- 1:16:13They're saying this just, it can't be.
- 1:16:15Your kids are affected now.
- 1:16:16Yeah.
- 1:16:16And your kids' kids are affected.
- 1:16:18And the truth is, if this continues,
- 1:16:21if this system is put in place and not reverted,
- 1:16:24you roll this ball forward, my son goes,
- 1:16:26hey, how do I build wealth?
- 1:16:28The hard thing I've got to tell him is you probably have to go overseas.
- 1:16:31Yeah.
- 1:16:32That's kind of the point where it's at.
- 1:16:33Now, if that message resonates with you, you've got to speak up.
- 1:16:39Just talk to people.
- 1:16:40Help people understand that this actually doesn't help young people at all.
- 1:16:43It makes it considerably worse.
- 1:16:45And the simple mechanics is you've got to save in assets,
- 1:16:48otherwise it's going to take you 40 years.
- 1:16:49We were talking at lunch.
- 1:16:51You spend money on beer and whatever else up until 25.
- 1:16:54You start saving at 25.
- 1:16:56Okay, what's 40 years from there?
- 1:16:58You're 65 when you take your first mortgage.
- 1:17:00For 30 years.
- 1:17:01For 30 years.
- 1:17:02And at 95, you pay the bastard off.
- 1:17:05If that story doesn't make sense,
- 1:17:08then you've got to save in assets.
- 1:17:10So then you wind back the clock and say,
- 1:17:12you've just doubled the taxation on assets.
- 1:17:16And the high growth assets get hit the most.
- 1:17:18You buy government bonds, you won't have much tax
- 1:17:20because you didn't make much money.
- 1:17:22But what do high growth assets mean?
- 1:17:23growth
- 1:17:25innovation
- 1:17:26like opportunity
- 1:17:27don't you want Australians
- 1:17:28to be doing better
- 1:17:29by owning assets
- 1:17:30that are worth something
- 1:17:32and growing
- 1:17:33and you just look at all the incentives
- 1:17:35this sets up
- 1:17:37and you go
- 1:17:37you're actually going for serfdom
- 1:17:39this is feudalism at its finest
- 1:17:41and you just have to push back
- 1:17:43because it is a permanent thing
- 1:17:45right
- 1:17:45this goes into effect
- 1:17:46yes politicians can change it
- 1:17:47but hoping for some other mob
- 1:17:49to come in and change it
- 1:17:50so I don't pay any attention
- 1:17:53to the politics
- 1:17:53and especially Australian politics, to be fair.
- 1:17:55What has the pushback from the other parties been?
- 1:17:58I mean, they all push back no matter what it is,
- 1:18:00but I'm starting to see One Nation,
- 1:18:02which is your equivalent of your reforms, I would say,
- 1:18:06polling well ahead of the Liberals.
- 1:18:09They'll form a coalition. They'll have to.
- 1:18:11That's just common sense.
- 1:18:13I would say that if this goes...
- 1:18:15Look, I would say there's a decent chance
- 1:18:17that Labour has to wind this back.
- 1:18:19The degree to which they wind it back
- 1:18:21for people who are non-Australian and Australians,
- 1:18:23That is our pain.
- 1:18:24That is how much politicians are willing to take austerity.
- 1:18:26It's like an indication of how much is going to be
- 1:18:29the print versus the austerity factor.
- 1:18:31And then we're going to get a coalition.
- 1:18:33I would say if they push much of this stuff through,
- 1:18:35if it goes through in a lightweight version just for property,
- 1:18:37they probably won't touch it.
- 1:18:39If they push it through in its current format,
- 1:18:40I would hazard a guess that they get slaughtered
- 1:18:43in the next election and they'll pull it back.
- 1:18:45But the thing that's completely fucked about this is,
- 1:18:47like we were talking before, we both have companies
- 1:18:49that both operate in Australia.
- 1:18:50Like, I just made my company overseas.
- 1:18:51Like, there's no way that I stay in that jurisdiction.
- 1:18:55Of course.
- 1:18:55And like, is that what they want from this?
- 1:18:57Is that the outcome they want?
- 1:18:58And that's the thing.
- 1:18:59If you look at the incentives,
- 1:19:00that is the result they're going to get.
- 1:19:01So for you and I, it's harder
- 1:19:03because reincorporating somewhere is a whole lift.
- 1:19:08Everything can be done.
- 1:19:10Reincorporating is a different animal to,
- 1:19:12hey, I want to start a business.
- 1:19:13Start a business somewhere else.
- 1:19:14So my, and this is why the memes
- 1:19:17of sticking elbows head in your business
- 1:19:20and saying, welcome, Mr. 47% shareholder.
- 1:19:24Imagine seeing that from thousands of young people.
- 1:19:26Memes are powerful.
- 1:19:27Memes are very powerful.
- 1:19:28And it distills it.
- 1:19:30And you get the lefties who show up and say,
- 1:19:31it's not really 47%.
- 1:19:33It's like, okay.
- 1:19:33It's 46.5.
- 1:19:35The truth is it's 45, right?
- 1:19:36Because you pay yourself a salary of 150, 160,
- 1:19:40and then you sell your business for half a million.
- 1:19:42Well, okay.
- 1:19:43The 30 grand was at the marginal tax rate of 37%.
- 1:19:46Then everything else is 45 plus Medicare.
- 1:19:47So it's like, okay, it's 45.75 marginal, 47%, right?
- 1:19:54The whole meme is you're taking the whole pie.
- 1:19:57So memes work.
- 1:19:59So if you do see Australians posting some ugly looking bloke
- 1:20:03in their business photo saying 47%, give it a retweet
- 1:20:06because it's meaningful.
- 1:20:08It gets around the world.
- 1:20:09Yeah, it's sad to see.
- 1:20:11Very sad to see.
- 1:20:12And it's one thing to think about these things.
- 1:20:15You know, it's another thing to get punched in the face.
- 1:20:17And again, I think there's a lot of folks who would say, just leave.
- 1:20:21It's like, that's fine.
- 1:20:23The vast majority of people are not going to leave their families and friends.
- 1:20:27So therefore, and frankly, that's really the majority.
- 1:20:31If you're a 24-year-old single person, makes sense.
- 1:20:34Go nuts.
- 1:20:35But once your obligations build and your life changes,
- 1:20:39that is a lifestyle for some people.
- 1:20:41Picking up and moving to Thailand is a lifestyle for some people.
- 1:20:43It might be the correct decision.
- 1:20:45But that's not the decision most people are going to make.
- 1:20:47So my perspective is I want to talk to those people
- 1:20:50because that's the majority.
- 1:20:51I have the means to move.
- 1:20:53I'm probably not going to move because where else are you going to go?
- 1:20:56You know what I mean?
- 1:20:57You can move somewhere else and they'll also change the rules.
- 1:20:59You move to Europe and they run out of energy.
- 1:21:01You move to Thailand, you move somewhere in the third world
- 1:21:03and suddenly we have a food crisis.
- 1:21:05There are trade-offs everywhere you go.
- 1:21:09So yeah, people shouldn't be kicked out of their home.
- 1:21:12They can be, but there's a chapter between here and there
- 1:21:16where you just don't say okay and, you know, push back
- 1:21:19as a first port of call.
- 1:21:21Despite the government, Australia is a pretty good place to live.
- 1:21:23It's a great place to live.
- 1:21:24And the problem is we are the lucky country,
- 1:21:25we're just run by absolute buffoons,
- 1:21:28which much of the Western world is,
- 1:21:30but this is a particularly egregious example of you have
- 1:21:34to understand the mechanics and you did it anyway,
- 1:21:38which, I mean, I don't know what the...
- 1:21:41Politicians are for treason, but it's got to be close.
- 1:21:42I'm going to send a letter to politicians
- 1:21:45for the first time in my life over this.
- 1:21:46I think most Australians should be.
- 1:21:49If you're a Bitcoiner and you're affected, you should do it.
- 1:21:51If you've got kids, you should do it.
- 1:21:52If you're thinking about having kids, you should do it.
- 1:21:54If you're a kid, you should do it.
- 1:21:55Everybody should do it because every email they receive
- 1:21:58is noise until they get 1,000 of them.
- 1:22:01Because every email represents 100 people who didn't say anything
- 1:22:04or 1,000 people who didn't say something.
- 1:22:05You get 5,000 emails, 2,000 emails.
- 1:22:07That's a voter base.
- 1:22:09That's now an issue that people are going,
- 1:22:11oh, hang on a second.
- 1:22:12This is now a problem.
- 1:22:13And it's very, very simple.
- 1:22:15You must climb the asset ladder
- 1:22:17to become the first rung in the housing market.
- 1:22:19They've just doubled the tax on that.
- 1:22:21No way this helps young people.
- 1:22:23Kick it back.
- 1:22:24Yeah.
- 1:22:24What a depressing way to end the podcast.
- 1:22:27It's unfortunate.
- 1:22:27But Bitcoin's back in a bull market.
- 1:22:29Well, that's the theory anyway.
- 1:22:30That's my theory.
- 1:22:31But look, and truthfully,
- 1:22:33I know there's a lot of...
- 1:22:34This event blocked my whole creative process last week.
- 1:22:38And to this week, I'm still working my own way through it.
- 1:22:42There's a lot of Australians out there who feel much the same way.
- 1:22:44It sucks.
- 1:22:45It sucks.
- 1:22:46And the best way to think about it, for savers,
- 1:22:50it's a 20% to 30% currency devaluation.
- 1:22:52And they did it via a very insidious method,
- 1:22:56which they housing young people washed.
- 1:22:59And it just pure evil Housing young people is the Australian equivalent of patriot in America Oh absolutely No it is It is It the equivalent And you know housing is a religion So it interesting that they been they would also know that they going to give
- 1:23:14the housing market a bit of a shakeup.
- 1:23:16And that's the thing, because negative gearing, just not to carry us on, but negative gearing,
- 1:23:21most properties, they're 2%, 3% growth at the moment.
- 1:23:25They've slowed down a lot since the boom after COVID.
- 1:23:282%, 3% growth capital.
- 1:23:30I've done the run on some yields that you'll see.
- 1:23:33You can just go on websites and see what it's sold for,
- 1:23:35what it's rented out for.
- 1:23:37Yields are 1% to 2.5% from rent.
- 1:23:41If you're not getting and you're paying a 6.5% mortgage
- 1:23:44and yields are going up on a variable rate mortgage,
- 1:23:49there's going to be a lot of people looking at this and going,
- 1:23:50hey, no negative gearing, no bueno.
- 1:23:53And 45% of mortgages are currently being investors.
- 1:23:56So you've just kind of removed half the investors.
- 1:24:01It's funny because we often talk about like the big button
- 1:24:04where they can print the money.
- 1:24:05It has like massive negative consequences on society.
- 1:24:08Yep.
- 1:24:08Is that actually a better solution here than this?
- 1:24:11It's a good question.
- 1:24:13I mean, we don't know.
- 1:24:14This is a movie that you may watch or didn't watch.
- 1:24:16You can't tell what the counterfactual is because you have to live it.
- 1:24:20The correct, and again, to be very fair,
- 1:24:23The correct model here is something to do with austerity The problem is this is not the right setup for that austerity The correct austerity is not a if you already asset rich
- 1:24:35you're in a much better position, and if you're trying
- 1:24:38to grow any wealth whatsoever, you get twice as bad of a deal.
- 1:24:42That's not austerity. That's a scam.
- 1:24:45It isn't equalizing because it makes everyone poorer.
- 1:24:48It's a very communist approach to things, so it is an equalizer.
- 1:24:52the better way to do it would be austerity.
- 1:24:54I don't know what the model is.
- 1:24:56And some people said, hey, you should have come up
- 1:24:57with a better solution in my write-up.
- 1:24:58It's like, bro, it's not my job to come up with a solution,
- 1:25:01but I can tell you that the solution they came up with is dog shit.
- 1:25:03So I think it's about just understanding the boundaries of the problem,
- 1:25:07saying austerity is the thing we should do.
- 1:25:09Going through the deflationary bust is the thing we should do.
- 1:25:12We won't do it.
- 1:25:13They will revert back to the printing.
- 1:25:15This is why I think Australia is an interesting test case.
- 1:25:18We were also a test case of yield curve control in COVID.
- 1:25:20I think they were trying to manage the three-year yield or the seven-year yield
- 1:25:25or some weird bloody esoteric vehicle.
- 1:25:28And they got blown out, right?
- 1:25:29The market just took them to task.
- 1:25:31So that was the trial balloon for the yield curve control.
- 1:25:35Now, eventually they're all going to have to go there,
- 1:25:36but it's this journey of we know the long picture.
- 1:25:40We know the macro trend.
- 1:25:43People then compress all that macro trend into the next daily candle.
- 1:25:47It the journey between here and there that yeah Yeah trial balloons see how it works in Australia see how it works in the UK What the appetite for austerity What the appetite for taxes What the appetite for inflation
- 1:25:57You know, like, it's hard to tell which one's worse.
- 1:26:00Picture poison.
- 1:26:00They're all bad.
- 1:26:02Fuck.
- 1:26:02Yep.
- 1:26:03Welcome to the fourth turning, mate.
- 1:26:04I can't wait for the first turning.
- 1:26:06I know.
- 1:26:06Surely we don't have a long way.
- 1:26:07And that's the thing.
- 1:26:09The first turning is greener shoots, right?
- 1:26:11And it's the thing that you and I, right, millennials,
- 1:26:14generally speaking, we're the ones who are going to have to cop the prime.
- 1:26:16I mean, how many hundred year crises have we gone through
- 1:26:19since we left school, right?
- 1:26:20Every six weeks we've got one coming on.
- 1:26:22So it's one of those things where like it's our job
- 1:26:24to kind of go through the ringer
- 1:26:26and you're supposed to craft a better story for your kids.
- 1:26:30We are the first generation who's worse off than their parents,
- 1:26:32just mathematically.
- 1:26:34Make that the last time that happens, you know?
- 1:26:37Fuck yeah.
- 1:26:37Have some grit, do the right thing, push back,
- 1:26:40get your parents to push back,
- 1:26:42get your parents' friends to push back,
- 1:26:44write the damn letter
- 1:26:45because it'll take you 10 minutes
- 1:26:46and you just never know.
- 1:26:48It might just kick in the nuts that they need
- 1:26:51and then you vote the bastards out anyway.
- 1:26:53Fuck yeah.
- 1:26:53Fire it up.
- 1:26:54There you go.
- 1:26:54That's what we need to end the podcast.
- 1:26:56All right.
- 1:26:56Thank you, man.
- 1:26:57That's been awesome.
- 1:26:57Good on you, man.
- 1:26:57Thanks.
- 1:27:15Thank you.
