• 0:54
Speaker 1: It started off with me having one of those you know, senior moments, apron moments, I came out here before either one of you were here and I vacuumed the studio.
• 1:04
Speaker 1: Don't ask me what possessed me to do that, but I think it was the dead leaves that had been in here for six months.
• 1:10
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, but at any rate I vacuumed it and all of a sudden I look outside and there's Mars, who's already backed into the driveway to unload stuff for the studio yeah for the studio.

• 1:48
Speaker 5: Patrick, a very good Saturday morning to you, sir, good morning to you guys.
• 1:50
Speaker 5: How are you doing?
• 1:51
  Speaker 1: Very well.
• 1:51
Speaker 1: Thank you very much.
• 1:53
Speaker 1: The Complete Book of AMC Cars, the History of American Motors Corporation.
• 1:57
  Speaker 1: I forgot 54 to 88.
• 2:00
Speaker 1: Yes, you know, for whatever reason, I thought that American Motors was before that, but it was Nash before that, was it not?
• 2:10
Speaker 5: Nash well, nash-calvinator Corporation and the Hudson Motor Car Company.
• 2:15
Speaker 1: Oh Hudson as well.
• 2:17
Speaker 5: I forgot about the Hudson.
• 2:18
  Speaker 1: I did not.
• 2:19
Speaker 1: I'll never forget about the Hudson because Lori Brown, who I went to school with, I think in the fifth grade, her mother had a Hudson Hornet and when she took me to school I was never so embarrassed and I slouched down in the back seat not that you can see me anyway in that great big beetle looking thing and I was always embarrassed by it.
• 2:40
Speaker 1: But that's my memory of the Hudson Hornet.
• 2:44
  Speaker 5: Look at that.
• 2:44
Speaker 5: Hudson was an amazing car.
• 2:46
Speaker 5: They had a really good performance reputation in the 20s and 30s and then they regained it in the 50s with the Hudson Hornet.
• 2:55
Speaker 5: They dominated NASCAR for four years in a row.
• 3:00
Speaker 1: And that's another thing that I do remember, those early videos of film actually of NASCAR on the sands in Daytona, and who was up front?
• 3:09
Speaker 1: Was it Tim Flock?
• 3:11
Speaker 1: Is that who it was?
• 3:12
  Speaker 1: Yep, Tim.
• 3:13
  Speaker 5: Flock.
• 3:13
Speaker 5: How did I remember that?
• 3:14
  Speaker 5: I don't know.
• 3:14
Speaker 5: Marshall Teague was a big winner with that and in that period, 51 to 54, if you weren't driving a Hudson Hornet in nascar, you were not getting any money.
• 3:28
Speaker 1: What did they do?
• 3:29
Speaker 1: Were they straight sixes?
• 3:31
Speaker 5: yeah, they had a big.
• 3:32
Speaker 5: It was a 308, straight straight, six, flathead, no less, yeah.
• 3:36
Speaker 5: But um, what made it so good was a car sat almost a foot lower than other cars.
• 3:42
Speaker 5: That's right step down body style that every car has nowadays.
• 3:47
Speaker 5: But they were the first one and it was a simple thing where an engineer said hey, you know, we've been welding the floorboard onto the top of the frame rail.
• 3:58
Speaker 5: Why don't we weld it to the bottom of the frame rail?
• 4:00
Speaker 5: Because then we're going to get more, you know more room inside the car, and that lowered the car so much that the car out handled anything on the road.
• 4:09
Speaker 5: Nothing could could catch it, except on a straightaway.
• 4:12
Speaker 5: An old v8 could catch it on a straightaway, but they couldn't keep up with it in the corners that's really cool.
• 4:17
Speaker 1: What a great story that is.
• 4:18
Speaker 5: And then 54 is hudson, hudson motor company and nash, and they were two of the largest independent American automakers.
• 4:27
Speaker 1: I do remember very distinctly in my early childhood the Nash Rambler.
• 4:31
Speaker 1: I think it wasn't because of the styling, I think it was the name.
• 4:36
Speaker 5: The Rambler, yes yeah, yeah, historic name.
• 4:40
Speaker 5: You know another car had that name years before and was very famous name it had.
• 4:45
Speaker 5: You know another car had had that name years before and was very famous.
• 4:46
Speaker 5: But the thing about the nash rambler was when you, when the, when we exited world war ii, anybody who wanted to buy an american car had pretty much one choice you could get a big car and that was it.
• 4:57
Speaker 5: And um nash motors said you know we're having all this.
• 5:01
Speaker 5: Suburbia is opening up, people are moving out of cities and housewives all of a sudden.
• 5:06
Speaker 5: They're not gonna be able to walk down the street to the butcher shop or the grocery store.
• 5:09
Speaker 5: They're gonna need their own car.
• 5:11
Speaker 5: So they came up with this smaller car that was much easier to handle and it sold like like hotcakes.
• 5:19
Speaker 5: It was just amazing because back then the Rambler was just known as a smart car for very intelligent people.
• 5:28
Speaker 1: So when did the transition take place from Nash Kelvinator Rambler to AMC?
• 5:36
  Speaker 5: May 1st 1954.
• 5:38
Speaker 5: That's when American Motors was formally established.
• 5:42
Speaker 5: But they had been in discussions for over a year and the decision to merge had been made earlier.
• 5:48
Speaker 5: And it was all because Henry Ford II in 1953, mid-1953, he said he made a vow.
• 5:56
Speaker 5: He said I am going to make Ford cars the number one selling car in America or I'm going to kill the company doing it.
• 6:04
Speaker 5: And he started shipping cars to his dealers without orders.
• 6:07
Speaker 5: He would just send them you know 50 cars and say you got to sell these because we're going to bill you at the end of the month.
• 6:13
  Speaker 5: Oh boy.
• 6:13
Speaker 5: And Chevrolet of course had to go in with that.
• 6:16
  Speaker 5: Plymouth did too.
• 6:17
Speaker 5: And everybody the low-priced three cars were selling like crazy.
• 6:22
Speaker 5: And it killed the independents Nash, hudson, packard, studebaker, willis-overland.
• 6:28
Speaker 5: They got creamed by this and it was known as the sales war of 1954.
• 6:34
Speaker 1: So the only choice that they had was to merge.
• 6:37
  Speaker 5: That was it.
• 6:38
Speaker 5: So Studebaker merged with Packard Willis-Overland had a unique situation in that they had the Jeep and there was nothing on earth that could compete with Packard.
• 6:44
Speaker 5: Willis Overland had a unique situation in that they had the Jeep and there was nothing on earth that could compete with the Jeep.
• 6:49
Speaker 5: They were okay, but they stopped making automobiles.
• 6:53
Speaker 1: Well, let's talk about your book, the 54 to 88 portion of AMC, which is a homologation of several brands.
• 7:01
Speaker 1: But they really came into their own, I think, in the 60s, when the competition heated up among Chevrolets and Fords, namely Camaro and Mustang.
• 7:13
Speaker 5: Yeah, they had a president in 1964, Roy Abernathy, who ran this commercial that said the only race that American Motors is interested in is the human race.
• 7:23
Speaker 5: And you know they were plugging this economy-sensible car image just as the muscle car market was taken off and it killed them.
• 7:35
Speaker 5: It really hurt the company very badly.
• 7:37
Speaker 5: Finally, in 1968 they were able to feel the javelin and a few months after that the two-seat AMX and that really started to change people's perception of American Motors cars.
• 7:47
Speaker 5: You see, there were four big American car companies and of those four only two could feel the two passenger sports car chevy with the corvette and american motors with the amx.
• 8:00
Speaker 5: So amc got this images.
• 8:03
Speaker 5: You know this is an innovative car company.
• 8:06
Speaker 5: They're able to do something that ford and chrysler couldn't even do wasn't it a day late in the dollar short though?
• 8:12
  Speaker 5: no, it really.
• 8:13
Speaker 5: It was a halo car.
• 8:14
Speaker 5: It sold fairly well.
• 8:16
Speaker 5: It was a tremendously successful uh race car and you know people love and when, when people say you know amc cars are not collectible, they don't get any money.
• 8:27
Speaker 5: A good, a good, you know, number one amx will fetch 60 to 80 thousand dollars.
• 8:33
Speaker 5: You know, wouldn't without breaking a sweat.
• 8:34
Speaker 5: Nowadays, absolutely, people do like them, yeah.
• 8:37
Speaker 5: And then you know they followed up with that with the Gremlin in 1970.
• 8:41
Speaker 1: We all love the Gremlin.
• 8:44
  Speaker 5: Who doesn't like a Gremlin?
• 8:45
  Speaker 5: I mean, if you don't like a Gremlin, you're a communist.
• 8:48
  Speaker 5: Oh, that's right.
• 8:51
Speaker 5: And the thing about the Gremlin is, you know, chevrolet, everybody knew Chevy's going to bring out this small car, a subcompact, to compete with the Japanese, and Ford's going to come out with a small car to compete with the Japanese, and they're both coming out in 1971.
• 9:07
Speaker 5: And then in 1970, complete surprise, american Motors brings a Gremlin on April Fool's Day in 1970, just to make it comical.
• 9:15
Speaker 5: And they beat everybody to the punch.
• 9:19
Speaker 5: And you know, this is a company everybody thought was marginal.
• 9:21
Speaker 5: It was, you know, on the verge of going out of business and they bring out the first american subcompact car before anybody else and they killed it.
• 9:28
Speaker 5: Yeah, they should have, they should have, they should have spent more money developing that over time.
• 9:35
Speaker 5: Yeah, you know they, they, uh, they had this mentality that, well, we've got a volkswagen here, we never have to change anything.
• 9:42
Speaker 5: But you know, on american cars you do, you have to change it.
• 9:45
Speaker 5: And they were late getting a four-cylinder engine.
• 9:47
  Speaker 5: That was unforgiving.
• 9:49
Speaker 2: Yeah, the picture on the cover that's uh, you like that?
• 9:53
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a racing version with parnelli Jones.
• 9:55
Speaker 2: Did he drive that in racing, or am I mistaken?
• 9:58
Speaker 2: I don't recall if Parnelli Jones did, but Mark, donahue, donahue, mark.
• 10:02
Speaker 2: Yes, okay, I was thinking Parnelli, so what?
• 10:07
Speaker 5: Mark Donahue was very successful in racing with that and with the Matador.
• 10:15
Speaker 1: Why did AMC choose to build their cars in kenosha?
• 10:21
Speaker 5: there was a car company in kenosha called um uh, the thomas b jeffrey company, and they built a car called the rambler and uh in the early part of the auto industry in around 1916,.
• 10:35
Speaker 5: The president of General Motors was unhappy with his position there.
• 10:39
Speaker 5: He wanted to own his own company.
• 10:41
Speaker 5: So he quit the presidency of GM if you can imagine such a thing even though he was very successful and they would have kept him there for another 10 years.
• 10:49
Speaker 5: He quit and he bought the Thomas B Jeffery Company, which was in Kenosha.
• 10:53
Speaker 5: They had a big factory, one of the biggest factories in the country and the most modern one, and that's what he wanted.
• 11:00
Speaker 5: His name was Charlie Nash, so he bought the company and he renamed it Nash Motors Company.
• 11:06
Speaker 5: And then they stayed there because they had a really well equipped large factory with plenty of room to grow.
• 11:12
Speaker 5: They had their own body plant.
• 11:14
Speaker 5: They made their own axles, their own engines, transmissions, everything they made.
• 11:18
Speaker 5: 92% of the car was built within the factory.
• 11:25
Speaker 1: Kind of like Henry did at Rouge River.
• 11:26
  Speaker 1: Yes, exactly Interesting.
• 11:29
Speaker 1: I assume that you at least touch on this in your book.
• 11:32
Speaker 1: Yes, Good, I was thumbing through it.
• 11:35
Speaker 1: Mr Mars brought and you know I was thumbing through it.
• 11:37
Speaker 1: Mr Mars brought it in this morning.
• 11:39
Speaker 1: I was thumbing through it.
• 11:40
Speaker 1: You have some absolutely wonderful photographs in here.
• 11:43
Speaker 1: I don't know where you came up with all of this, but this is really.
• 11:48
Speaker 5: Let's touch on that for a second.
• 11:49
Speaker 5: This is my kind of book.
• 11:51
Speaker 5: You made me so happy.
• 11:53
Speaker 5: I have um, the world's largest uh archive of american motors historical information and photographs, and part of it is I have 20 000 american motors press photos black and white in color and you know what they look like.
• 12:08
Speaker 5: They're all eight by ten and etc.
• 12:10
Speaker 5: So when I did this book I went through when I said I want to pick the photos I like the best and I spent a lot of time on it and I'm glad you like them.
• 12:19
  Speaker 1: Yeah, very good.
• 12:19
Speaker 1: Well, you know I can tell that you have spent an enormous amount of time on.
• 12:23
Speaker 1: What a great book.
• 12:23
Speaker 1: Whether you're an AMC fan, a Hudson, it doesn't make any difference, just a car guy.
• 12:29
Speaker 1: If you're a car guy, this is the kind of book that you want to have, a book that you want to have.
• 12:34
Speaker 1: What a great gift this would be for any car guy.
• 12:36
Speaker 5: Did you go look in the 1969 section the Scrambler Rambler?
• 12:42
Speaker 4: Yeah, find that one, the Scrambler Rambler.
• 12:46
Speaker 5: It was going to be the last year they were going to build the Rambler and somebody said, hey, why don't we take the AMX 390 V8 and 4-speed and stuff it under the hood of the very lightweight Rambler American and have Hurst, do all the you know, put it all together, beef up the suspension, everything, put a tachometer outside the car on the hood and let's see what happens.
• 13:08
Speaker 5: You know Actually, no, no, no, that was on the machine, but they had a hood scoop on it.
• 13:13
Speaker 5: Wild, red, white and blue Yep Paint job.
• 13:16
Speaker 5: All right, that's not custom, that's how they came from the factory, yeah.
• 13:19
Speaker 4: I remember that yeah, I was telling them earlier before the show started.
• 13:22
Speaker 4: We had a guy in town there when we were growing up.
• 13:25
Speaker 4: You know he had one of those and I mean everybody.
• 13:29
Speaker 4: Just he would come out on Saturday night and everybody just would look at it and swarm around it just to look at it.
• 13:34
Speaker 4: He never would race anybody.
• 13:35
Speaker 4: He was smart enough not to ever actually street race anybody.
• 13:42
Speaker 1: But everybody was just in awe of that car.
• 13:44
Speaker 1: Well, on page 117, my heart throb.
• 13:46
Speaker 1: Sherry Lewis the puppeteer, and she's in the Gremlin.
• 13:50
Speaker 1: What a great photograph.
• 13:51
Speaker 1: I kid you not.
• 13:52
Speaker 1: I mean, at least for my age age, that uh, this is uh really neat.
• 13:57
Speaker 4: Truly, he was good with my age one yeah yeah I'm only.
• 14:02
Speaker 5: I'm only 49 years old well yeah you got me beat by working hard.
• 14:06
Speaker 4: You've been working hard patrick.
• 14:08
Speaker 2: How long did it take you to write the book?
• 14:11
Speaker 5: I took me about a year and and a lot of it was with my partner on the project, tom Gashi.
• 14:17
Speaker 5: He did a lot of the writing, I did a lot of the research, I did all the photography, or most of the photography.
• 14:22
Speaker 5: It's the first time I've done a book like this with a co-author and it was just a real pleasure.
• 14:30
Speaker 5: It helped us get the book to market faster.
• 14:34
Speaker 5: I've had some health issues over the last year, so it helped me a lot.
• 14:35
Speaker 5: Where helped us get the book to market faster, and I've had some health issues over the last year, so it helped me a lot.
• 14:38
Speaker 2: So where can we get the book, as Christmas is coming?
• 14:42
Speaker 5: Well, the best place to get it is.
• 14:45
Speaker 5: There's a website called wwwold O-L-D-E, because I'm in New England, that's how they taught us to spell old Old Milford M-I-L-F-O-R-D Press, p-r-e-s-s dot com.
• 15:00
Speaker 5: That's my company, oldmilfordpresscom, and you can get an autographed copy if you'd like.
• 15:06
Speaker 5: Just order it online and it'll go out from my facility and it'll be autographed and you'll enjoy it.
• 15:14
Speaker 1: I think Well, I'm sitting here enjoying it, right now just thumbing through the pictures.
• 15:19
Speaker 1: I mean, you know, this is my kind of stuff.
• 15:21
Speaker 1: I like Hemings Publications and this is kind of reminiscent of some of the Hemings Publications because we've got pictures.
• 15:29
Speaker 5: Well, I've worked for Hemings for 30 years now, so there you go, I get the connection.
• 15:35
Speaker 5: I'm not on the staff, I'm a freelance writer.
• 15:37
Speaker 5: That's what I've done most of my life.
• 15:39
Speaker 5: Yeah, a freelance auto writer, which you know, that's somebody who can make a living doing that.
• 15:46
  Speaker 5: It's rare.
• 15:48
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 15:49
Speaker 5: I've had a column with them for I don't know how many years 20 years probably in Hemings Classic Car Magazine, and I've been a feature writer with them even back in the days when they had the old Special Interest Autos Magazine.
• 16:02
Speaker 5: So yeah, I guess I don't know if I got the Hemings touch from them or if they've got the Foster touch from me, let's go with the second one there.
• 16:14
Speaker 1: Yeah well, it's a wonderful book.
• 16:16
Speaker 1: It's a true honor and pleasure to meet you and you know what?
• 16:21
Speaker 1: Let's touch base and see what else you've got working out throughout the year.

Speaker 5: This is my 35th book and they're all about cars.
• 16:30
Speaker 5: Well, you know what?
• 16:33
Speaker 1: I think that what we need to do is just let you pick and choose, and here's what we're going to talk about the next time you talk to us.
• 16:38
Speaker 1: You just pick and choose.
• 16:39
  Speaker 1: That's a good idea.
• 16:40
Speaker 1: I like that idea.
• 16:40
Speaker 1: That's been great Thanks for having me on, patrick.
• 16:43
Speaker 1: Thank you so much and enjoy your time.
• 16:45

• 16:49
Speaker 5: Yes, when we're done with this, I have to go out with the John Deere and pick up leaves.
• 16:54
Speaker 5: Well, and I've got leaves that are up to my knees.
• 16:57
Speaker 1: Yeah, well, it's that time of year and lucky you.

Speaker 1: I made the mistake.
• 25:34
Speaker 1: I don't it a kind of a mistake, I think in the faux pas in the?
• 25:40
Speaker 1: In the bowels of my mind it wasn't a mistake, but it's another story for another day.
• 25:45
