- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, breaky News. Hamas releasing a statement just moments
- 0:03Speaker 1: ago in response to President Trump's proposal seeking to end
- 0:07Speaker 1: the war in Gaza. Let's bring in CBS News Senior
- 0:10Speaker 1: White House correspondent At O'Keeffe outside at the CBS News
- 0:13Speaker 1: broadcast center. There ed, what can you tell us about
- 0:16Speaker 1: this statement from Hamas well?
- 0:19Speaker 2: CBS News has learned, Elizabeth that re sources knowledgeable with
- 0:23Speaker 2: the talks tell us that Hamas has accepted and is
- 0:26Speaker 2: ready to enter into further negotiations to discuss the twenty
- 0:32Speaker 2: point proposal that was put forth by the White House
- 0:34Speaker 2: earlier this week that was accepted by the Israeli Prime
- 0:37Speaker 2: Minister Benjamin and Yahoo. They said, in part in a statement,
- 0:41Speaker 2: out of concern to stop the aggression and the genocidal
- 0:44Speaker 2: war being waged against our steadfast people in the Gaza
- 0:46Speaker 2: strip and stemming from our national responsibility and essence, Hamas
- 0:49Speaker 2: is ready to talk. So that would appear if it's
- 0:53Speaker 2: interpreted as such by the White House to stave off
- 0:56Speaker 2: the threats that the President made earlier today. In the least,
- 0:59Speaker 2: the social media space saying that Hamas had until six
- 1:01Speaker 2: pm Eastern on Sunday to accept the terms of this
- 1:05Speaker 2: or face consequences and all caps saying that there would
- 1:11Speaker 2: be peace in the Middle East one way or the other,
- 1:12Speaker 2: in essence threatening them with further military action by Israel,
- 1:16Speaker 2: or perhaps even something more. White House officials had cautioned
- 1:19Speaker 2: that that was in essence just reiterating what the President
- 1:21Speaker 2: had said earlier this week, which was that if Israel
- 1:23Speaker 2: believes it's got to go in and continue or intensify
- 1:26Speaker 2: its military operations, they'd have the President's support to do so.
- 1:29Speaker 2: But now with tonight's statement tonight Middle East time, and
- 1:32Speaker 2: then this afternoon here in the United States, a single
- 1:35Speaker 2: that perhaps talks could very well begin in earnest soon
- 1:38Speaker 2: unclear who when, over what specifically, because all twenty of
- 1:43Speaker 2: those points were quite complex and could take days off
- 1:46Speaker 2: nott weeks to sort out each individually on the path
- 1:49Speaker 2: of the piece.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Yeah, those twenty points were complex, and I want to
- 1:52Speaker 1: ask you ed if you could just sum up some
- 1:53Speaker 1: of the biggest points made on that proposal from President
- 1:57Speaker 1: Donald Trump to negotiating table between these two.
- 2:00Speaker 2: I mean, among other things, it was the idea that
- 2:02Speaker 2: members of Hamas would renounce their membership in the group,
- 2:05Speaker 2: leave their weapons behind, and be given safe passages to
- 2:07Speaker 2: other countries. There was stuff like or key details, including
- 2:14Speaker 2: a sort of provisional government or entity that would run
- 2:17Speaker 2: the Gaza strip for a while while the Palestinian authority
- 2:20Speaker 2: reconstituted itself. There would be this so called Board of Peace.
- 2:25Speaker 2: They would be co chaired by President Trump and other
- 2:27Speaker 2: world leaders, including the former British Prime Minister Tony Blair,
- 2:30Speaker 2: to oversee the reconstruction not only physically of Gaza, but
- 2:36Speaker 2: of its political structure. And there would of course, perhaps
- 2:40Speaker 2: most critically and most immediately be in exchange of the hostages,
- 2:44Speaker 2: the handful that are still alive, the bodies of those
- 2:46Speaker 2: believe dead. And then Israel would in turn hand over
- 2:49Speaker 2: hundreds of prisoners that have been taken since October seventh
- 2:53Speaker 2: in exchange. So that's the key, critical first piece. And
- 2:57Speaker 2: then conceivably talks would continue, and you would also begin
- 3:01Speaker 2: to see the withdrawal of Israeli defense forces from Gaza.
- 3:04Speaker 2: So all of it again yet to be determined, subject
- 3:07Speaker 2: of great negotiation, but Hamas here signaling in the last
- 3:10Speaker 2: few minutes that in fact it is ready to do so,
- 3:13Speaker 2: and that should be seen in Israel and here in Washington.
- 3:16Speaker 2: It's quite an encouraging development. And we'll hear at some point,
- 3:19Speaker 2: probably from the President, whether it's in person or over
- 3:22Speaker 2: social media.
- 3:23Speaker 1: You know. The President ed as you know, has made
- 3:25Speaker 1: it no secret that he intends to be considered for
- 3:28Speaker 1: the Nobel Peace Prize. We know their committee is meeting
- 3:31Speaker 1: in about a week or so. What can you tell
- 3:32Speaker 1: us about the timing of all this.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Well, you know, you can't self nominate for something like that,
- 3:40Speaker 2: and certainly he has stoked conversation about whether or not
- 3:43Speaker 2: he should be considered for something like that. As you said,
- 3:46Speaker 2: they are meeting soon, and the White House has gone
- 3:50Speaker 2: to great lengths he himself, especially in recent weeks really
- 3:53Speaker 2: since he's really since the summer, to point out that
- 3:57Speaker 2: in their view, he has helped settle seven different inflicts
- 4:00Speaker 2: over the course of his first administration, and this one,
- 4:04Speaker 2: most recently the situation in Africa. There's also the one
- 4:09Speaker 2: between Armenian and Arzerbaijan. There were a handful of other
- 4:13Speaker 2: disputes in his first administration, and so they added up
- 4:16Speaker 2: and say there have been seven in different conflicts that
- 4:19Speaker 2: he's helped settle. This would be yet another one, and
- 4:22Speaker 2: of course the biggest, perhaps most complex, is the one
- 4:24Speaker 2: between Russia and Ukraine. Those are the two he vowed
- 4:27Speaker 2: to settle quickly. He has not been able to do so,
- 4:29Speaker 2: of course, but you know, if indeed talks are set
- 4:32Speaker 2: to begin, you could see a renewed push for him
- 4:35Speaker 2: to be considered for that. If not this year, certainly
- 4:37Speaker 2: next year.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Can you give us some context though, into the recent
- 4:40Speaker 1: conversations between President Trump and bb netan Yahoo over the
- 4:44Speaker 1: past month or so and how we got to this point.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Well, got aaron part because the President had some pretty
- 4:52Speaker 2: significant conversations with leaders of predominantly Arab and Muslim countries
- 4:57Speaker 2: in recent weeks and the lead up to the United Nations,
- 4:59Speaker 2: and while he was at the General Assembly meetings in
- 5:00Speaker 2: New York were they in essence reiterated that they're concerned
- 5:04Speaker 2: about this, they want to see the resolution of it.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Made clear that in their view, Israel cannot occupy the
- 5:09Speaker 2: West Bank, which is a separate location and situation from
- 5:14Speaker 2: the situation in Gaza, and reiterated that the hope of maintaining,
- 5:20Speaker 2: sustaining and expanding the so called Abraham Accords that were
- 5:23Speaker 2: established during his first administration, and that is greater Arab
- 5:26Speaker 2: Israeli cooperation and US engagement in that region where it
- 5:30Speaker 2: would be at risk were this conflict to continue. So,
- 5:34Speaker 2: with all that pressure, and with the President himself upset
- 5:36Speaker 2: with some of the steps that had been taken by
- 5:39Speaker 2: his including targeting Hamas leadership. When they were in Cutter
- 5:42Speaker 2: a few weeks ago for negotiations, Nenya, who came to
- 5:45Speaker 2: the White House on Monday, was handed this list of proposals,
- 5:50Speaker 2: got on the phone with the leader of Cutter and
- 5:52Speaker 2: apologized for that military strike. And then you saw Ntya
- 5:55Speaker 2: who pretty quickly say we are good to go with
- 5:58Speaker 2: this list if Tamas is as well, and we'll see
- 6:01Speaker 2: what we can do. Notably, what that twenty point list
- 6:05Speaker 2: doesn't include is explicit assurances that Israel won't one day
- 6:10Speaker 2: try to overtake An and occupy the West Bank. A
- 6:13Speaker 2: and also unclear what becomes of the Palestinian Authority, which
- 6:17Speaker 2: of course has been there for so long, not really
- 6:19Speaker 2: in charge of this situation in any way, uh, but
- 6:22Speaker 2: arguably a a political entity that could be stood up
- 6:25Speaker 2: to help run a re established and reinvigorated and rebuilt Gaza.
- 6:30Speaker 2: So again all of this subject to conversation, but Netanyahu
- 6:33Speaker 2: was made to understand at least on Monday, if not
- 6:36Speaker 2: before Uh that the President his lead negotiator for this,
- 6:40Speaker 2: Steve Whitcoffe. The administration overall was pretty serious about making
- 6:44Speaker 2: sure that attempts were still being made to get to
- 6:46Speaker 2: a peaceful resolution.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Ed Okaefe with that breaking news. Thanks so much, Ed,
