- 0:18I'm Jessica and this is ATC presents.
- 0:20Their Bucky Rambles. Were a couple of friends review
- 0:22Korean dramas on a very special episode.
- 0:25I have my guest today. Alex from the Holly been
- 0:29podcasting Gasps how are you Alex?
- 0:31I'm doing great. Thank you for having me.
- 0:33How are you? I'm so happy for you to be.
- 0:35Here, we have been very friendly all over the socials for a while
- 0:38now and I'm just so excited who have a fellow podcaster on and
- 0:43to talk about a very special drama.
- 0:44It is the very first sangguk AKA historical kdrama that were
- 0:49covering on the biblical rumbles podcast ever.
- 0:52So I just wanted to break it in with a wonderful guest who was
- 0:57willing and able to watch a psychic.
- 0:59That is not One's cup of tea. If you don't know Alex she has
- 1:04her own podcast, a k-drama podcast or Holly you podcast,
- 1:09and she is just wonderful. Please go give her podcast a
- 1:13listen. Please go give it a follow.
- 1:14All over the socials as well. Alex, what was your introduction
- 1:18to kdramas? So my introduction was one that
- 1:22I think was one for a lot of other people.
- 1:24It was Boys Over Flowers. Yes, but I didn't watch it.
- 1:29Until like the end of 2018. So it's like lately to the game.
- 1:34Wow. Okay, so you watched it almost a
- 1:37decade after it was aired. Yes, I was actually in grad
- 1:42school. So I was working full-time and
- 1:44doing grad school and I was online.
- 1:47But my school got hit by a hurricane.
- 1:49So we were out of class for like a month was my last semester.
- 1:53Wait, well, hurricane was this? Because I live in Florida, it
- 1:55North Carolina. I don't.
- 1:57Ok. Ok.
- 1:58So as well as goes, yeah. Got you, I don't remember which
- 2:01one it was, but the name of it was, but it was one of those.
- 2:03Like I was I'm I was in North Carolina at the time but I was
- 2:06Inland. So it was fine.
- 2:08Yeah. But like obviously my school
- 2:10wasn't like it. Wilmington got hit really hard
- 2:12like you can't even get in for the longest time.
- 2:14So no school for a month and that was the first time in
- 2:18almost two years. I had free time.
- 2:20So I was like, I don't know what to do and I'd like to just kind
- 2:23of Netflix and I was like, you know what, I had heard a Boys
- 2:26Over Flowers from the from, like the manual or the mango or
- 2:29whatever. Yeah.
- 2:29Yes, says like I'm gonna watch this and then at the same time
- 2:35as when M Garden was airing. Oh shit.
- 2:38That's right. The Chinese remake.
- 2:40Yes. So I literally went from from
- 2:42Boys Over Flowers, like binged it because it was amazing.
- 2:45Even, you know in 2018 it was it's so good.
- 2:49Like it's bad. Like it's cheesy but it's great.
- 2:52And and I went straight from that to like Meteor Garden, and
- 2:55that's not just big step up to like, it is like the end of your
- 2:59same story. Over again.
- 3:00It's the same thing but they made some improvements like
- 3:03surgical Cuts is just very good. Very well done and I can't
- 3:07believe you just got skip to like you know it's hot.
- 3:10I don't think I made the jump to like a Mandarin language drama
- 3:15for like years. They took no really I'm too yeah
- 3:19almost wasn't immediate like you've made the jump real fast
- 3:22II, jumped ship from Korean dramas like immediately.
- 3:25So with that and I just went through like Taiwanese dramas
- 3:28for a while like for a Longtime the Taiwanese dramas are like a
- 3:32whole other ballgame. Yeah.
- 3:34Nice. Yes I did that.
- 3:36And it wasn't until I got into Kpop later.
- 3:38That I kind of went back to the Korean dramas.
- 3:42Nice. Okay.
- 3:42Full circle. Full circle, love it.
- 3:47Yes. So if you if you don't know
- 3:49about Kate Boys Over Flowers, I highly recommend you go research
- 3:53it. I not sure that I would still
- 3:55this day, I'm not sure if I would say, watch Boys Over
- 3:58Flowers but it is foundational for so many people foundational
- 4:01for me. It was like my second kdrama
- 4:03ever and I came out of that drama loving it and I was madly
- 4:08in love with Lee Min-ho right? I mean so yeah yes so there is
- 4:14if That was a tree that would definitely be a ring on the
- 4:16trees like the Lehman haut de Lulu era.
- 4:20So anyway, in that era, oh good, I love to hear it.
- 4:29Thank you so much for giving your background on kdrama.
- 4:32I am going to ask this of more guests as they come on because I
- 4:35think that's always a fun question to ask.
- 4:38How did you even get here? Because it's nice.
- 4:40Never like a natural. Like, well, I was watching.
- 4:44Ting. Once Upon a Time on ABC, Family,
- 4:46and then they showed a kdrama right after the show ended and
- 4:50is very natural. No, and never, it's not like
- 4:52that, not that easy. Again, I'm going to go into some
- 4:58housekeeping really fast before we get started.
- 5:00So if this is your first time listening, go ahead and

- 5:36You guys are wonderful. All right, so we're going to get
- 5:39started talking about the synopsis and the are day and all
- 5:43that for the Ground clown so I'll read them.
- 5:46I'd Ramallah synopsis. I have cut it down tremendously
- 5:49because it was long and weirdly written.
- 5:51So here's here goes, Jocelyn is in a state of disorder, due to
- 5:56uprisings in a power, struggle surrounding King, even to avoid
- 6:00assassination, a clown named Hassan who looks almost
- 6:03identical to the king is brought to the Palace to take his place.
- 6:07Now, Hassan is nervous that someone in the palace will find
- 6:09out, he's not the real King. He falls in love with the
- 6:12beautiful queen. You saw.
- 6:15So the crown clown originally aired from January to March
- 6:182019. It's 16 episodes long and I
- 6:22believe you both watched it on Netflix, so it's currently
- 6:24available on Netflix. If you want to watch it yourself
- 6:27it has Kim. He won as the Director.
- 6:30She is a very prolific director because she's directed Vincenzo
- 6:35soundtrack. Number one and Little Women,
- 6:37which is currently airing right now in the year 2022.
- 6:41And actually we just covered Vincenzo like an episode or two
- 6:44two ago in this currencies and that we're on.
- 6:46So that's wonderful. You can just scroll back in your
- 6:48podcast feed and listen to another Kimmy.
- 6:50One drama. The ground clown was written by
- 6:54Kim Sun duck and there's not much info on the screen writer.
- 6:58I think that he wrote another Saga but it's quite unclear.
- 7:02So I'm not going to go ahead and say, like he wrote this, I don't
- 7:05know, and it's co-written by shouldn't happen.
- 7:09She is a wonderful screenwriter who wrote Hometown, Ted chaough
- 7:13from 2021. So, I kind of get the feeling
- 7:16that Kim Sun duck. It's brought a lot of the
- 7:19historical and Saga aspect of it.
- 7:22And then she known wrote, probably a lot of the more
- 7:26tender moments throughout the show because of how her work on
- 7:29Hometown, chatter child. Let's just divide that I get, is
- 7:32very good show Stars. Yes, I'm Tasha definitely watch
- 7:36it. The show Stars Yeo Jin, goo as
- 7:40Hassan and King Ethan he's been in about 13.
- 7:44Movies including Hawaii a monster boy which is an action.
- 7:47Since this action suspense thriller with an All-Star cast
- 7:51and he's been at about 25 TV shows, he's played pretty much
- 7:56every vert younger version of an actor.
- 8:00You could possibly think of and he was a prolific child actor.
- 8:04So it's kind of weird for a lot of people to see him grown up
- 8:08and play a more mature roles. We did Cover a judging go drama.
- 8:14Last Is it on their back? And that was beyond evil.
- 8:16So that was the 2021 drama. I think for 2022 people might
- 8:21recognize him from link. Eat love kill you might
- 8:25recognize him from hotel, de luna, my Absolute Boyfriend.
- 8:28A lot of Dramas, he's very, he's got a very well-known face.
- 8:32I would feel like you could probably be like oh, it's that
- 8:35guy. He's co-star.
- 8:38Is he saying? As she plays Queen Stone?
- 8:41Also a child actor. And she's been in dramas since
- 8:462002, and you might see her recently in the Reds leave from
- 8:512021, which was up for a bunch of facts on the wards and was
- 8:55really well, received, critically, and commercially.
- 8:59And recently, I think she's on the currently airing drama.
- 9:03The law Cafe. Are you watching the law Cafe?
- 9:05I'm not, I've never even heard of it.
- 9:10Fair enough. Fair enough.
- 9:11I'm not going to knock you for watching.
- 9:13Curly, are you drama? I am constantly trying to play
- 9:15catch-up. So yeah, that's a whole nother
- 9:19story for me. A lot of kdrama washers, but you
- 9:22saying is a great actress, the supporting actors.
- 9:26I'll go through two of them because there's a lot of actors
- 9:29in this drama but just two of them.
- 9:31Kim Seung Ki young as Chief secretary and he's been in like
- 9:36nineteen movies, including the pirate. / Royal treasure from
- 9:40this year 2022. And I think this is pretty big.
- 9:43He started memories of murder from 2003.
- 9:47He played Detective salt alien Big deal.
- 9:51He's been about 14 TV shows, including most recently
- 9:54racketboy is from 2021. And then, we also have one.
- 9:58Hey, he'll as she's to the left State Chancellor, buzz, buzz
- 10:04word in any psychic trauma. He's another crazy.
- 10:08Great idea. She of kdrama and K Cinema.
- 10:13He's been in about fifty two movies.
- 10:14He's been acting since the 90s. I think I saw him last in
- 10:18Peninsula from I need 20, which is the train to Busan Sequel and
- 10:24then he's been in 47k, trembles including winter Sonata from 20
- 10:312002. My name is Kim Sam Soon with
- 10:34hyeongbin from 2005 Cain and Abel, which is such an
- 10:37underrated kdramas knee. He's been in lie to me, which
- 10:41was my first kdrama ever jealousy.
- 10:43Incarnate searched www from 2019, which we also covered this
- 10:48season on the pod. P on Netflix.
- 10:51That's a 2021 drama. And I think most recently
- 10:54forecasting love and whether off from this year 2022, you watch
- 10:58that one? No, no I did not.
- 11:02So I sometimes my tone gives away like how I feel, but I'm
- 11:06not a song kong person so it takes me a while to go through
- 11:11his filmography. If I even like get there and
- 11:16then POC menu and I was like, you know, whatever she's doing
- 11:19like Same thing over and over. I love her and I actually have a
- 11:23little bit of a weather nerd, so I was like, super excited about
- 11:25it and I made it like four episodes before I dropped it.
- 11:28Oh shit. Okay, so I'm okay and yeah
- 11:32thinking yeah no I really need a maybe post hurricane because
- 11:36I've watched her kdramas post hurricanes and those are such a
- 11:39weirdo state that you're in but here watching a gauge on.
- 11:43Okay, so we are on the other side of who's behind the camera
- 11:48and who's in front of the camera.
- 11:49Alex, tell me, what are your general thoughts on the crowned
- 11:53clown? So, the first episode took me
- 11:57three weeks to watch because I hated it and I actually ended up
- 12:01really enjoying the show somehow good night.
- 12:04All right, the the first episode was miserable to get through.
- 12:07But after that, I think all the side characters are what sold it
- 12:11for me. Like, honestly.
- 12:12Like, I love you. Oh, jingle.
- 12:14Like, he was one of the first actors that I probably
- 12:16recognized in movies or in dramas because I watched Hotel
- 12:21Del Luna and Absolute Boyfriend, like back.
- 12:24To back and do my son. And I was like because I really
- 12:27liked it, but I was like, just great and that was also my
- 12:29introduction. I you I had no idea who she was
- 12:31and Hotel Del Luna, right. Right.
- 12:36Are you the fairy goddess Queen? Right?
- 12:38No idea. I was like, oh, she's great.
- 12:40I love her and then everyone was like, yeah, no kidding.
- 12:45So how does I was really excited?
- 12:47Because I'm not a big like, like historical drama person anyway,
- 12:51but I was like, it's not looking good.
- 12:52It's fine and and know No, he did not carry the show for me at
- 12:56all. Um, really okay.
- 12:58So um, the the character development of like the the side
- 13:02characters though when getting to know them I just I loved it.
- 13:05It was there so good and like a eunuch Joe was adorable.
- 13:11Yes. So there's some people that
- 13:12you're like you leave a drama and you're like they are some of
- 13:16the heart of the show he and he was so cute what's adorable?
- 13:21I would die for that man. He is Lovely.
- 13:25Just absolutely wonderful. Okay.
- 13:28So you were sold on the side. Characters weren't really even
- 13:32though you loved you didn't gu you were not sticking around to
- 13:35finish the show necessarily for him.
- 13:38His acting was great, like, absolutely like being able to
- 13:40play two characters and make them feel like, two different
- 13:43characters is such a hard thing to do, but but I just, I hated
- 13:48both the characters. Well, let me ask that, like, why
- 13:53did you Hey, those characters because he is playing two
- 13:57different routes. So so the OG King, I don't
- 14:02remember Lee. Hyung.
- 14:05Yeah, without getting too much into spoilers.
- 14:09He's just kind of a jerk all over like, no matter what he was
- 14:12mean to literally everybody. And I'm like, I just not here
- 14:16for the toxicity. Like, yeah, it's sort of, it
- 14:21makes sense. Like, as you kind of get to know
- 14:24more More like, what's going on? It makes sense, which is why I
- 14:27think it got better for me towards the later in the show.
- 14:30When you start to figure out everything out a little bit more
- 14:32but like in the first episode where it's just like, he's just
- 14:34like doing his thing. Killing a lot of people and I'm
- 14:38like, this is pointless. Um, okay, I see you weren't
- 14:43quite gelling with like the political know I'd about it all,
- 14:46okay. And then for like, Hassan, he he
- 14:51got better towards the end, but it was like, I don't know what
- 14:56it was about him, but it was just like he was just kind of
- 14:58like doing things that didn't make sense and not always
- 15:00listening to people. And then just Which I mean, I
- 15:04guess it fits his character like, like it makes sense, but I
- 15:07just didn't like, like, I everybody's infatuated with him
- 15:12for some reason and I just wasn't like in the show, like,
- 15:14people were like, oh, I kind of love you, You're great.
- 15:17And I'm like, is he? Okay.
- 15:22So let's put a, put a book Yak on that because I really wanna
- 15:26dissect that. But for my general thoughts, I
- 15:30thought this was one of the best Saga books I have ever watched
- 15:32in my life. Of that.
- 15:34You got me so worried because you were sending me messages
- 15:37saying, it took me three weeks to finish episode one, and I was
- 15:40like, what? Like that it started it yet and
- 15:44I was so worried. I was like, oh shit, what am I
- 15:46gonna do? I don't have like three weeks to
- 15:49just spend on one episode. So I was like, really bugging.
- 15:53So I watched this show within a week.
- 15:59All 16 episodes within a week. Took me no time.
- 16:01Had no issues getting through the episode.
- 16:03Thuds episode 1 was I found a very great episode, really good
- 16:08ended on a cliffhanger. Showed you everything you needed
- 16:11to know all the players involved.
- 16:14The factions or the political aspects that are at play here
- 16:18and I think ultimately I was sold on this.
- 16:23The story that's basically inspired by Mark Twain's The
- 16:26Prince and the Pauper. Blueprint where someone is
- 16:34replacing another person. There's doppelgangers involved.
- 16:37And even though it's kind of one-sided because the king
- 16:40doesn't replace the clown, you know what I'm saying?
- 16:44I would have been sired. That would be you know what?
- 16:48The way to the right things but they didn't do that.
- 16:52It was just one-sided. Really liked you watching Goos
- 16:57acting. Yeah.
- 16:58It was a great away Blown Away by his acting.
- 17:02I thought that he just had so much versatility.
- 17:06One side of him was alarming and unhinged and then the other side
- 17:11was incredibly endearing and righteous.
- 17:13And I think the scenes that really spoke to me for his
- 17:17performance were the ones where he was acting against himself
- 17:20and there were precious few of them but they were so
- 17:23captivating to watch him playing off of himself, which again,
- 17:28Parent Trap that somehow because there's no way that he's in the
- 17:31same frame at the same time. So it's really cool because he's
- 17:35probably playing off of nothing when he's filming it but then
- 17:39they you know CG is superimposed whatever both of them in post
- 17:45and it's just really cool to see him play.
- 17:49This really crazy King who actually existed like a lot of
- 17:55these characters and politician. Ins are based on real-life
- 18:01politicians of you're in Korea. So, I caught a like, oh my God.
- 18:05Now it's like a semi historically accurate, not
- 18:08historically accurate with a, with a clown taking over the
- 18:10Kings, but doc, doesn't, that's not part of the history.
- 18:13But I do like when I like when Saga Cooks, take a seed of like
- 18:19a story in history and blow it out of proportions and that's
- 18:24what this show is, I didn't have that much issue.
- 18:28With the political aspects, I find that over time.
- 18:32I have gotten a lot more comfortable with Palace,
- 18:36politics and etiquette, and all that crap.
- 18:39That's in the historical. Dramas, if you had asked me 10
- 18:43years ago, what I thought of this drama or whatever and you
- 18:48made me watch it back then I probably wouldn't be so up on it
- 18:51because of all of the political machinations that are happening
- 18:55throughout the show. Yeah, I think that was a lot of.
- 18:58My problem is, I've only watched like two or three other like
- 19:00historical dramas. Okay.
- 19:02All right, let me know if you had any questions later on in
- 19:05the spoiler section because I can try and answer them for you.
- 19:08I was trying to figure out stuff too but then I was like I had
- 19:11this thought in my head I was like man I don't know if Alex
- 19:14has watched a lot of Psychics. Maybe this is like a like tough
- 19:17anyway. What can talk about that later?
- 19:18But you know one thing that I know 10 years ago I would have
- 19:22liked as much as I loved today was the romance between Hassan
- 19:27And the queen. Um, what did you think of that?
- 19:32I felt really bad for the queen early on when it was like she
- 19:36doesn't really know what she's getting into.
- 19:38Um, okay. Because like, she's just clearly
- 19:41like falling for him, but I wasn't sure how I was going to
- 19:45end. So I was like, this is going to
- 19:47maybe devastate her at some point.
- 19:49Um, so I feel really bad for her on that end, but the actual like
- 19:53Rome edits from itself. I'm a sucker for romance.
- 19:56I was here for it. I was here, I was like eating it
- 19:59up like it was a five course meal as well.
- 20:02I loved you so long as the queen, I had only seen her
- 20:06before in the red sleeve, which is another Saugatuck, from a
- 20:09recent Saga house. Like she is amazing in the red
- 20:14sleeve uncredible show, incredible performance.
- 20:16And I thought, when I saw her as a queen and this y'all was like,
- 20:19what is homegirl going to do? Because she has in my personal
- 20:23bias opinion, or whatever. She has huge shoes to fill and
- 20:27they're her own shoes. What am I gonna do if she was,
- 20:30like, knock if she's not that good?
- 20:31Good in this. She was great.
- 20:33She was great, she was wonderful Queen, I found her character.
- 20:36So quiet, graceful, gentle sweet, a dignified and all these
- 20:43aspects that sometimes in Saugus, you don't have a love
- 20:47interest that meets all of these things, wonderful criteria.
- 20:50You know, she was very intelligent and intuitive,
- 20:54especially when it came to Palace Affairs and etiquette.
- 20:57And ultimately, I admired how she had a way with words.
- 21:00I found that she was a Rate Sweet Talker.
- 21:03Yeah and she had the most romantic things to say.
- 21:07I was like, homegirl. He is whipped already.
- 21:10You don't need to do this. Like this is extra and it was
- 21:14just beautiful, beautiful. I think that to your point to
- 21:20talk about some of the other side characters, I found that in
- 21:23general, most of the characters were painted in Shades of Gray.
- 21:28There were not like black and white good and bad characters.
- 21:31So I think on the surface there are but if you look a little
- 21:35closer, you're like, wow, these people have valid motivations or
- 21:40they have a really interesting backstory that makes them
- 21:44interesting to juxtaposed against the other person that's
- 21:48on the good, you know, quote unquote team for the, you know,
- 21:52clown. And I love that about the show
- 21:55that you can. You can chew on the fat a little
- 21:58bit on the other side characters.
- 22:01And not just Is he oh my God, I'm messing up.
- 22:04His name, haasan's clown character and his doppelganger
- 22:08with the King. I think the last couple things
- 22:13that I'll say, is that I found this show to be kind of, how do
- 22:21I put it? Like, it was kind of like a loss
- 22:24of Innocence story in more ways than one.
- 22:27Yes, and that's really compelling to me.
- 22:29I don't feel like, hey, dramas necessarily are known for
- 22:33painting pictures of like, loss of innocence.
- 22:36And, you know, learning trial by fire.
- 22:40Fire and stuff like that. It's usually the person is the
- 22:45protagonist is Good from the beginning and they just have a
- 22:49lot of hardships, but they're still good throughout.
- 22:51And sometimes in this show, that's not the case.
- 22:55Like they go through a lot of moral quandaries and they have
- 23:01they asked a lot of questions of themselves and others.
- 23:04So I found that really great, you know, in a in any drama.
- 23:07That's a good thing, right? No, I agree.
- 23:09I think they Did a really good job of that.
- 23:11And like you said, with the Shades of Gray on the
- 23:13characters, I'm a sucker for a great character.
- 23:15Like it's one of those, it's a huge character can technically
- 23:18go either way. It's not always clear that
- 23:20they're going to stay on like one side or the other and it
- 23:22like would make sense for them to jump ship somehow or have
- 23:26some sort of ulterior motive that even if it's not like the
- 23:28main villain side a false and they go Rogue somewhere else.
- 23:31Like I could have easily seen that happen quite a few times.
- 23:36Yeah, for sure. I think something that bothered
- 23:39a lot of About the show. Is that a night in mind this
- 23:43though was that it feels like a to act show.
- 23:46The first Eight Episodes is kind of one story and then something
- 23:51happens at the end of episode eight like Ron that time.
- 23:54And then the last half of the show is a whole different act
- 23:57with kind of a different goal. And I like that about the show.
- 24:02I am, I think it made sense for that to happen though.
- 24:06Because yes, I do too. I think the big thing that we're
- 24:09trying not to talk about is kind of granted in The Narrative of
- 24:14the show. Like you just kind of think.
- 24:16Yeah, this was going to happen at some point, but I think a lot
- 24:21of people found that when that happened it like lost some of
- 24:26the dramatic tension, if found it elsewhere, that's all they
- 24:32gained it elsewhere. So, that's how I wasn't an issue
- 24:35for me, but a lot of people An issue with that.
- 24:37Yeah, I think maybe if I didn't, oh, go for it in jibt, all in
- 24:40like three days. Oh, II might have had more of an
- 24:47issue if I was dragging it out and like had like a week in
- 24:49between episodes to process. Mmm.
- 24:51And notice that like difference between like episode a even and
- 24:55nine like that transition already.
- 24:57But I I feel like watching it all almost like a really long
- 25:00movie, it just made sense how it shifted and I didn't bother me
- 25:05either like like I honestly didn't even notice.
- 25:08Yeah, yeah, like I said romance was wonderful.
- 25:12The score on this show was stunning to me.
- 25:18I'm a huge like movies. Soundtrack score nerd or
- 25:22whatever. And so when a kdrama is a good
- 25:24score, I'm like I sit up straight like I'm like oh my
- 25:27God, they're actually doing something, it's not just OST
- 25:31like this is orchestral score, you know what I'm saying?
- 25:35Hmm. Did you feel any type of way
- 25:37about the osc or the score? So with that was T.
- 25:40I didn't. I only noticed one song that
- 25:42actually had vocals on it. Like only one of them like
- 25:44normally I am all about the osts.
- 25:46Yeah. And I don't quite a few.
- 25:48And so I was like, oh, like when that one song Hit, I was like,
- 25:51oh, wait a second, there's been no vocals.
- 25:53But I had to take some notes on, like the score itself.
- 25:56There were some songs that were giving me parts and Caribbean
- 25:58Vibes which took me out a little bit.
- 26:00Okay. So you're getting Hans Zimmer.
- 26:02Yeah. Hospital fives from it.
- 26:04Yeah. And I was like, I don't know
- 26:05where this is. Coming from.
- 26:06And then every time there was tension, the, the score they
- 26:09would use for that sounds like the Among Us sound like the
- 26:12nearer. Oh, okay, a nice smooth.
- 26:18Look at comparisons and so outside of that, like I thought
- 26:22the songs fit very well, it would just be like a few things
- 26:25that kept taking me out a little bit like, like the among us
- 26:28know. I never I didn't get that but
- 26:32I'm not, I have not really familiar with Among Us.
- 26:35So I'll, I'll see if I can clip it out of like the drama.
- 26:39I'd like a find it in, like a monkey.
- 26:41Yes. And send it to you and it to me.
- 26:43Yeah. Because it just, it's so much.
- 26:46Oh damn, what's your okay? So what trip me up was in the
- 26:50score they had a love theme and it was stunning gorgeous but
- 26:53what soon as they started playing at the melody was
- 26:56recognizable to me and I was like where the hell if I heard
- 26:59this before? Before I was going nuts, I'm
- 27:01talking like 3 a.m. I'm trying to get Google to
- 27:03recognize what this this melody is.
- 27:08Playing it on like a keyboard, piano app, on my phone, like
- 27:11trying to like figure it out. I was like, have I heard this in
- 27:14another score before is it a classical piece of music?
- 27:17I finally figured it out. So the Love Theme they used was
- 27:23Franz Schubert's serenade. Oh, is a classical piece of
- 27:27music from the 1800s and I I lost my shit, because, you know,
- 27:32it's been a couple of days of just like Mania trying to figure
- 27:35out where the score is from, where they took it from, where
- 27:38is it from all this stuff? Finally, I find it.
- 27:42And then it's on YouTube with, like, 61 million views on this
- 27:46like, and this YouTube video super serenade as soon as I
- 27:50start playing, I'm like, like I will start crying.
- 27:52Like I was that's it. That's lumpy a lot of people
- 27:55might recognize the Love Theme though because it's associated.
- 27:59Added with the classic four seasons, kdrama summer scent
- 28:03with seungheon young and Legend song.
- 28:07That's a very old, not very old, but it's a classic kdrama from
- 28:12back in the day. And I conveniently have never
- 28:15watched Somerset. So I did not have any issues
- 28:18associating. You know, the Schubert song with
- 28:22their love theme in the show. And in fact, I really liked how
- 28:25they kind of added and changed the song.
- 28:29Bit to fit you know this show and how they didn't just stick
- 28:34Schubert song in there. They re-recorded it you know for
- 28:37the show and I was in love with it.
- 28:40I am so happy that I found where the melody is from and you can
- 28:43look it up yourself. The entire score is available on
- 28:47Spotify, which is how I like I found it and I was like where
- 28:51this is what I the Mania started because I was like, okay I hear
- 28:54the Melody and I can't find it anyway.
- 28:57That's beside the point. Anyway, let me give you some fun
- 29:01facts about the show and then we can give our ratings and then we
- 29:05can dive into spoilers. How does this home?
- 29:07Sounds good? Okay.
- 29:09So there is a very, very professional, you know,
- 29:14well-researched list on Wikipedia that gives you the
- 29:18highest rated series on cable television for kdramas.
- 29:22And the crowned clowned is sitting at number 24, so it's
- 29:26the 24th. Highest rated series on cable
- 29:29television, which is really good.
- 29:31Had high ratings throughout, I, you mentioned, Prince and the
- 29:36Pauper. So the whole show Crown cloud is
- 29:40a remake of the 2012 movie, Masquerade, starring evm gun and
- 29:45the queen in that movie is played by Han hyo-joo.
- 29:50From where's on YouTube? W0 leading lady from W.
- 29:55Yeah so I conveniently have watched that movie and it is
- 30:00excellent. I can tell you.
- 30:02So if you are not fully want to, if you don't want to fully
- 30:06commit to Crown Cloud right now and you just want to get a taste
- 30:08of what the story is. You can always watch this
- 30:10two-hour movie which won best film and director at the 49th.
- 30:14Baek zyoung Awards. It is an excellent movie.
- 30:16Highly recommended, I might have to watch it now.
- 30:19Definitely watch it. It's good.
- 30:21I remember thinking like this is cool.
- 30:23I vividly remember watching the movie and going, this is cool.
- 30:26This is cool movie. I'm like, well done, almost
- 30:30everyone, like I said before, except for the clown, Hassan is
- 30:34based on a real historical figure of the Choson period And
- 30:38I have in my notes. I said this is a question to
- 30:40myself. Did this win any awards?
- 30:43Question mark question, mark, question, mark.
- 30:46It did, it did win awards at the 55th Back song.
- 30:49Arts Awards, judging, goo was nominated for best actor and
- 30:54actually didn't win. He didn't win.
- 30:55So it's just sad. But anyway, Kim Sung, Kyu, young
- 30:58witch who played he played? Chief secretary Hawks on.
- 31:02He was also nominated for best supporting actor in which is
- 31:05great. So, they were nominated.
- 31:07They were it's just an honor to be nominated.
- 31:09Just like it's an honor to be nominated for an Oscar.
- 31:14I wish that they had one and I think that's all for my fun
- 31:18facts. What would you rate this drama
- 31:22out of five Soju bottles? Three and a half.
- 31:26I think three and a half. Okay, I am in a rated. 4.5 4.
- 31:35So, 2 bottles out of, I love this show.
- 31:39I had a great time with it. I think that if you like
- 31:42political shows and you're definitely going to like it.
- 31:45If you're a fan of really good, sweet, humble romances then
- 31:51you're going to like the show and if you like yaojin goo,
- 31:55there is nothing that I can say that will deter you from
- 31:58watching the show you should definitely watch.
- 32:00This is like a Master Class. It's from your jinguk, I swear.
- 32:04Okay, so with that, I think we're going to get into spoilers
- 32:08right after this. You want to come in?
- 32:18All right Alex run the other side of spoiler.
- 32:20So anything goes where would you like to start about this show
- 32:24and talking all things spoilers? Gosh, um, the endings what's
- 32:32fresh on my mind but I kind of want.
- 32:33Okay, listen about the ending. So let's talk about this.
- 32:37I also had some qualms with this ending which is why I gave the
- 32:42show a 4.5 instead of a 5 Stars, the ending.
- 32:46And I mean ending is in the final 20 or so minutes of the
- 32:49chest. Not the full hour because a
- 32:52full, there's nothing wrong with the flowers.
- 32:54Just the last like, 20, 15, 20 minutes of the show.
- 32:57It was a bit agonizing because I didn't think they necessarily go
- 33:01that route. I mean to me, it almost felt
- 33:05like what else could they possibly throw at us?
- 33:08It's the say it to me. It was almost the same as if
- 33:11you're cooling down after a workout, you're trying to get
- 33:14your heart rate down, you're stretching your doing all this.
- 33:17And then, the trainer comes in out of nowhere.
- 33:20And I can't drop and give me Honey, that's what the last 20
- 33:22minutes of the show felt like, because like, for what?
- 33:25Why did they have to go that far?
- 33:27Yeah. They had me, they cut me.
- 33:30I was so happy with like how it was wrapping up and then it was
- 33:33like, yes, wait, yeah, wait what?
- 33:37Yeah, that's exactly how I felt too.
- 33:40I felt that they were going about it the right way.
- 33:44They had, you know, I will accept a bit of a Time jump.
- 33:48They had he ruled for what? Maybe like a year or so they
- 33:52kind of made it seem like it was only a short period of time but
- 33:56it could have been longer. It was kind of a big it was
- 33:59about a year because they had talked about At one point, when
- 34:05the gisaeng I can't remember her name, but when she was leaving
- 34:10at the end to go to somewhere else, three years.
- 34:13Yeah. Okay.
- 34:14So that's why I'm thinking it was only a year so he ruled in
- 34:18peace and prosperity for like a year.
- 34:20Then he leaves the throne to. Another Royal who is kind and
- 34:24shares, his values. Whatever, honestly, solid move.
- 34:28It's all I move. Not have no issues with that.
- 34:30Yeah, he never meant to pass on his bloodline anyway.
- 34:33He As which I found kind of like odd because I'm like whatever
- 34:37you're there already. You know?
- 34:38I'm saying if I had you had your at a theme park and you're like
- 34:41I'm not gonna ride that ride. Hey I hate tensions of writing
- 34:45the best right here which is character though.
- 34:47Of like he can. Yeah, he fixed everything and he
- 34:50peaced out. He what I liked was that he left
- 34:53the throne the monarchy better than how he found it.
- 34:56Yes, which I found really just in line with his character.
- 34:59Exactly. Like you said the queen, Has
- 35:03dethroned. Which is fine.
- 35:04She wanted it. I then I had a problem with that
- 35:08because the, yeah, because they made such a big fuss about being
- 35:11dethroned and then like they kind of glossed over it or
- 35:15they're like yeah sure we're going to let that happen to the
- 35:17move on and I'm feeling sitting was solid though because she
- 35:21wasn't Dethrone necessarily for anything that she did wrong.
- 35:25I think he probably dethroned her because she could no longer
- 35:29have children, which is a very valid reason in back in charge
- 35:33Dynasty to Dethrone a queen because he wanted a valid.
- 35:37Are yeah. I just uh so he dethroned her.
- 35:40I feel like she wanted to because she yeah.
- 35:42She said the reason she was like, okay, Dethrone me first.
- 35:46Yeah, he was like, wow, he kind of had this look like No And she
- 35:49was like if you leave and you leave me here without being
- 35:53dethroned, I will become the queen Dowager and I will never
- 35:56get to leave the palace. We will never be together.
- 35:58Yeah, like like okay of that little Logic, the logic behind
- 36:01it makes sense. I just feel like They skipped
- 36:04over a lot of drama that would have happened between her being
- 36:08dethroned and him just abdicating.
- 36:10Like, but he was a very easy discernment.
- 36:13I'll give you that. There's like that all of that
- 36:15they're like, okay, we're going to give their land, I can't do
- 36:19this. He desperately tried to keep her
- 36:21on the throne not have her dear owned for 16 episodes in the
- 36:27last 20 minutes. She's like, okay, go ahead, do
- 36:29it. It was a little bit like okay.
- 36:33Then he abdicates. Yeah which also isn't a big
- 36:35deal. Wasn't a big deal.
- 36:37He wanted they have they gave him a lot of reverence and the
- 36:41big walk out of the palace was great.
- 36:44I don't know if you noticed when he's walking out and there's
- 36:46other this giant Plaza, expansive, Stone Plaza, that
- 36:50he's walking down, he's walking in the direct center of it.
- 36:53And he makes a point of stepping off this Center path that he's
- 36:57on and on to like the regular, you know, area and what he's
- 37:02doing is stepping off the Kings path.
- 37:04Yes. So I love that.
- 37:06Yeah, that was really cool symbolic moment for him and I
- 37:10don't think a lot of people would necessarily know that if
- 37:14they hadn't watch a few psychics.
- 37:16But I found that very powerful where he was like, oh, wait, let
- 37:19me stop. And because it was him turning
- 37:23into a regular citizen again, and then he exits, and he's
- 37:25dressed in plain clothes and all the stuff that's great.
- 37:29On his way to the queen. This is when it gets bad, he
- 37:32attacked he's at Not by a gaggle of soldiers, who wanted to
- 37:36avenge the queen Dowager, and it's a mess like the Royal Guard
- 37:41officer Jang. I think is his name.
- 37:44Yeah, he dies say trying to save him because that was the way he
- 37:49wanted to go as well. He's like, I want to die like,
- 37:52protecting you. I, when I have this honorable
- 37:54death and all that shit, he had it fine.
- 37:56Give it to him. I cried over that, though.
- 37:58I loved him so much. He was great.
- 38:01He had a great Arc to because You know, initially he's
- 38:06throughout the show, he's very loyal and very, very stoic,
- 38:10which is the blueprint for a bodyguard in the Royal Palace,
- 38:14but he does take orders that he ends up, you know, negating or
- 38:20going against and he tries to kill him at one point like dumps
- 38:25him in the pit out in the middle of nowhere and wild and then he
- 38:28goes and picks him up and he doesn't kill him which is what
- 38:31the OG crazy. He wanted the doppelganger
- 38:35wanted and ultimately, he goes through, you know speaking to
- 38:40him. Casually not using honorifics to
- 38:43using honorifics with him and accepting him as the king and
- 38:46really showing loyalty fealty to Hassan, which is beautiful.
- 38:51A great Arc for the guy and that's why he follows him out of
- 38:54the palace. And it's like, you are you going
- 38:56to leave me behind? And it was very emotional and
- 38:59your least. He's like there was just like
- 39:01looking at each other that moment and then these Fucking
- 39:04fools. Come out of them brush and are
- 39:06just like for the queen. They order and you're like, for
- 39:08what war? He, I don't know where so the
- 39:13guard dies. Yeah, we're all heartbroken
- 39:16super obsessed son, gets shot by two arrows in the back.
- 39:20Keels over time. Jump two years later.
- 39:25I was like, no, they did not do this to us when they did the
- 39:29time Jump, I knew he was going to survive, but it was just
- 39:31like, really we're going to do Even in the time Jump, I thought
- 39:37that they would not do a so dirty that the way they did.
- 39:39Because you see the queen walking around this Village it
- 39:43with a deposed queen or whatever walking around the village,
- 39:46having a good time. The clowns are in town and you
- 39:49see his sister, and his, you know, friend Uncle will however,
- 39:53whatever you want to call him. Also doing the show in the town.
- 39:58And she's very emotional, gives gives away a couple of rings.
- 40:00She had Jade rings and she's like, oh, oh, you reminded me of
- 40:04my loved one, my beloved. And I thought when she went
- 40:08home, he would be there or something like that.
- 40:12She may be looking at his Compass, the one that she gave
- 40:16him and he would walk in the room like something like that.
- 40:19No, she just kind of, she just cries because he is legitimately
- 40:24missing in action. They never found his body, and
- 40:27as soon as I said, they never found his body, I was like, this
- 40:30is the dumbest shit that they could have pulled.
- 40:33In the final 20 foot 15 minutes of.
- 40:36I wish they had at least explain better where he was for two
- 40:40years because it was kind of, like, time passed.
- 40:42I was unconscious. It made no sense.
- 40:45Like what, what is the protocol when you find an injured man in
- 40:49the wild you can't wear, is there a hospital or something
- 40:54that he's been staying at 42 years?
- 40:56Based on the kdramas. I watched you just kind of take
- 40:58them in and deal with it and don't look for like family.
- 41:03I'm not sure who was rendering, care to him for two years for
- 41:07him to just be okay. He made it seem like I was
- 41:12asleep or something for all this time.
- 41:14Then when I woke up, I was too weak to run back to you, which I
- 41:21thought was funny. I was like, is that implying
- 41:22that he had physical therapy and Dynasty so that he can walk his
- 41:28way back to his girl. It was they try to make it I
- 41:32Guess fall in line with what they had promised each other
- 41:36before, which was he ended up taking the long way round, which
- 41:40was, that was the quote from her.
- 41:42She was like even if you take the long way around, I'll still
- 41:43be here for you. Yeah.
- 41:45But they like to they did not. He did not need to take the long
- 41:51way round. Okay like these this was done.
- 41:55I went through enough over 16 episodes.
- 41:58There was no need for them to pull this like dirty trick.
- 42:01I thought this was dirty D. Yeah, I wasn't a fan.
- 42:04It's really what it's like to cheer Gap and then he wasn't
- 42:07there. I was like really, really.
- 42:11So she said around and just like Pine for like somebody who she's
- 42:15had assumed was dead, but was never going to be sure because
- 42:18there wasn't a body so they're like, we found Master.
- 42:22We found officer Jang. Woo, didn't find him.
- 42:25We don't find The King and I was like, you're shitting me.
- 42:29Fuck out of here. Eyeless live, it, I was like, oh
- 42:31my God, they did not. Just do the.
- 42:33So anyway, the ending points taken for the fight, literally,
- 42:37the final 20 minutes or so show. Yeah.
- 42:41We're on the same page, sir. I think that we have to talk
- 42:46about the romance, so now that we've already like, talk through
- 42:49the ending of them because they do have a technically happy
- 42:54ending. Yes, the end up together.
- 42:56He does like return. I wasn't sure if they were going
- 43:00to, you know what, I feel the same way.
- 43:03I was kind of like this could end badly and it would still be
- 43:08a fair like a fear thing to do because the content of the show
- 43:12The Narrative and I was like this.
- 43:15Has a fair chance of men eating badly for both of them.
- 43:17They just don't end up together but luckily they did finally end
- 43:22up together. He took the long way around
- 43:25whatever I said before spoiler break that I really like the
- 43:29purity of the romance. There was just such a warmth and
- 43:34kindness and consideration that he showed toward her and she
- 43:39instantly gravitated towards him because she was living Like a
- 43:45zombie in the palace and she was not getting any warmth or
- 43:50kindness or consideration from the OG King and some moments
- 43:56between them are just a wonderful like he she trips over
- 44:00a stone and tries to play it off but he notices the pebble that
- 44:05he starts kicking them, he starts kicking all the rocks and
- 44:09Pebbles out from the path because he's walking out of her.
- 44:12I'll I was like, this is Is goals like this is I can see
- 44:19that he was written by a woman. You know what I'm saying?
- 44:21Hmm. I'm trying to, I have a really
- 44:24funny note. I don't have to there.
- 44:28He ends up. Oh, go ahead.
- 44:30Did you find it? There's in um, in one of the
- 44:33episodes when they're hanging out in the library and he's just
- 44:35staring at her. Oh, and it's my nose literally.
- 44:40Just I want a boyfriend that looks at me the way he's looking
- 44:42at her right now. That her so preciously and
- 44:47Tenderly and he ends up treasuring, her life above his
- 44:51own because he ends up taking a bullet for her so to speak.
- 44:55Yeah, he just reflexively Shield her from the arrows because the
- 44:58queen Dowager again, just trying to murder them.
- 45:02It's ultimately a relationship that gets built on trust and
- 45:06equity which I found really refreshing in a saga of drama
- 45:10because usually there is some sort of inequality between
- 45:15Between the male and female leads.
- 45:17And in this case even though he is playing royalty, there's so
- 45:23much Equity between them like she helps him read his reports
- 45:28written in Chinese characters. I'm just like this is a key to
- 45:32see there are no barriers between them as as there would
- 45:37be, there should be between them if he were a true Royal and she
- 45:42ends up helping with his kingly duties.
- 45:44Like that's very The, for the queen to be, so involved like
- 45:47that, and just be hanging out in the Kings Library.
- 45:49Things like that are just not usually done in the sagas.
- 45:53So it was very special, I think for both of them to not only get
- 45:59to know each other, but like get to know each other on a soul
- 46:04level which was really refreshing.
- 46:06They have start over halfway through the show.
- 46:08Basically. Yes.
- 46:09She's like, what is your name? Like she had no idea which I
- 46:12feel terrible about. Yeah.
- 46:15Yeah, I think that's where I would mentioned earlier.
- 46:17I felt really bad for her. I think it was everything
- 46:19leading up to, like that point where I was like, this isn't
- 46:22great especially when the, the OG can comes back.
- 46:26Oh yeah, so let's talk about that.
- 46:28So they have all these Great Moments between them because
- 46:32he's the replacement and actually a nice hazelnut thing
- 46:36where he's that, he's the couldn't Queen could make her
- 46:38wish at the bridge and so you gave her some hazelnuts.
- 46:41He collected. What should who has hazelnuts in
- 46:44there? It's leave.
- 46:45It was great, like, great moment of levity and says, oh, there's
- 46:50a legend that if you crunch on them, you'll start all the
- 46:53goblin that lives under the bridge, or in your house, who
- 46:56would then Grant your wish. So that comes into play in
- 46:59episode 20 with the terrible ending that we don't really
- 47:02like. But anyway, so the hazelnuts are
- 47:04great, she holds onto it. It's like a token for her and,
- 47:09you know, everyone's gravitating toward Hassan everyone's falling
- 47:13in love with Hassan, which we can talk about later, you see,
- 47:15I'm to be quite annoyed by that, you know, the real King comes
- 47:20back like an episode 7. He's mad as hell.
- 47:24Uh, nearly slices everyone up, you know, Hassan gets dumped
- 47:29into tiger pit up in the mountains to die and the real
- 47:33king is most upset by how the queen seems enamored by him how
- 47:39her whole demeanor and her health has even improved by
- 47:45Being near the clown and he fought.
- 47:48He's like most he's thinking back to interacting with the
- 47:51queen and queens, like smiling lovingly at him.
- 47:54Never seen that before. And he moves up the consummation
- 47:57date before the consummation date.
- 48:02He had already written up his decree to Dethrone her and
- 48:05behead her before. Even attending the consummation,
- 48:09how fucking vial is that? The hall they I was just like, I
- 48:13hope something happens. To stop this conservation
- 48:16because I was like, I'm going to have a major problem with the
- 48:18show that goes through. I was like, yes, sucks.
- 48:22If he was like nice to her, for like, five minutes, their whole
- 48:25relationship would be different like this.
- 48:27Let's talk about this because I think that I have a different
- 48:31view of the OG King and his relationship with the queen
- 48:35because she had some good memories with him before he took
- 48:40the throne, right? She was saying oh, he held my
- 48:44hand. Never in comforted me when
- 48:46things were kind of crazy in the whole sphere sphere that they're
- 48:51in and, you know, he told promise me that, you know, we
- 48:54would stick together. We'd stay together and it just
- 48:57kind of like generally nice stuff.
- 49:00We never see a full-on flashback of him being wonderful to her
- 49:05but she does. So it does seem like there's
- 49:07enough there from when they were crowned Prince and Crown
- 49:11Princess to carry her into this really crazy.
- 49:15Loveless marriage, when he's King.
- 49:19So I feel really bad for her because not only is she stuck in
- 49:24a Loveless marriage but he seems to not care for her anymore.
- 49:29The way that he used to. And there's some things that
- 49:32made me think maybe he still does care for her because early
- 49:36on, they show him going to her chamber or whatever in a fit of
- 49:41rage but he's there and he tries to like kiss her and she turns
- 49:44away Yeah and instead you think that a man who's having
- 49:49hallucinations acting crazy is going through crazy episodes of
- 49:55mania and rage. What?
- 49:57Just just rape her, you know what I'm saying?
- 50:00Like what what does he have to lose?
- 50:02There's nothing stopping him and he doesn't go so far as that he
- 50:07just kind of like tells her people think that It's me that
- 50:15doesn't want you, who would think that it's the other way
- 50:17around. Mmm.
- 50:19And I found that really poignant.
- 50:21Like, you know, yeah, he's okay with these rumors about her
- 50:24because who has the power in that relationship, it's really
- 50:27her the whole time. So no I agree that there's some
- 50:34glimmers that he does care for her right.
- 50:37Like I'll say I he's not completely at fault either
- 50:41because there's a lot of like the the paranoia and in the
- 50:43drugs and all that going on that causes him to be like that.
- 50:47Then there's like how long did it take for him to like, how
- 50:50long was he gone to detox me? Still came in as just like the
- 50:52most vile person I've ever seen. Probably lonely.
- 50:56Because I was confused too. I have No experience now, what
- 51:02not only were drugs but with opium in particular, but it
- 51:05seemed like he was smoking. Opium completely addicted to
- 51:09Opium plus they were throwing on some incense that was giving him
- 51:13hallucinations. So who know where the hell they
- 51:16got that, like, from whatever mushroom, they derive that
- 51:18incense from. But I felt extremely confused
- 51:23when again, he's up in the mountains, completely detox
- 51:28removed from the The drugs and he's still messed up.
- 51:32Yeah. I like I get the, like, the
- 51:34anger and stuff because I think at that point, it's kind of
- 51:36become just as personality to just always be angry.
- 51:38But like the, everything else that came with it where I was
- 51:41like the paranoia, some of that shit that used up but like he
- 51:44literally just don't trust anybody.
- 51:46Besides the one, dude. You shouldn't trust.
- 51:48The left State. Chancellor.
- 51:50Whatever is nice to lipstick chance late.
- 51:52Like guys, always a problem, never trust that guy.
- 51:57Look, if you are watching a saga, And the left State.
- 52:00Chancellor is a good guy, you're not watching a saga.
- 52:03Look like that's not. That's, that's always the guy,
- 52:06you gotta watch out for. Yeah, but yeah.
- 52:09And then it's like he came in and like the guns blazing mad
- 52:12that they did anything while he was gone.
- 52:14It was like what what what, what else?
- 52:17Right right, yeah. So, it was a lot of a little bit
- 52:22of questioning with his condition and how they've framed
- 52:26it because it seemed like once he was got off the drugs, He
- 52:29should be okay, but he wasn't no, not a still really paranoid
- 52:33still having hallucinations still seeing his dead little
- 52:36brother, like craziness. Speaking of the little brother
- 52:40that was all the way in episode 1.
- 52:42And I was pretty much heartbroken from episode 1 by
- 52:45this, this whole sequence that they had the Old King does Cameo
- 52:51by Jang. Hyuk, who's the old King
- 52:54complex? Daddy issues here, and I wasn't
- 52:58quite sure. or who everybody was because he had this queen who
- 53:04becomes obviously upon his death, the queen Dowager, she's
- 53:06a major player throughout the rest of the Moon, the movie, the
- 53:09rest of the show, and you had this half-brother and I thought
- 53:16originally that the king with the OG King were just keep
- 53:21calling him the OG King. But the OG King.
- 53:23I thought he was a legitimate Heir from the previous Queen,
- 53:28not the current Queen who becomes the queen Dowager, but
- 53:31that wasn't the case he was from similar concubine.
- 53:34Or oh, I didn't get that at all. Yeah, so I have to figure it out
- 53:40and look up the history. So he was not technically a
- 53:43legitimate heir. Because he came from some other
- 53:45concubine. But once the queen who was a
- 53:51Barren died, his dad married, the queen Dowager in the show
- 53:58who was significantly younger and produced children for him.
- 54:01So that's why he was threatened by that little half-brother at
- 54:06the beginning of the show because everyone considered him
- 54:09a legitimate Heir. And of course, You know, you
- 54:11have to think of the political aspect of it.
- 54:13It's a child, so you can do whatever you want.
- 54:16Like raise the child Harvey, white rule in the child's dead.
- 54:21So everybody who wanted something was gunning for the
- 54:26half-brother to be enthroned and that just didn't happen.
- 54:31No. Yeah, sad.
- 54:34That upset me. That upset me a lot did upset me
- 54:37when He makes his dad beg to spare the sun like the
- 54:42half-brother. And you see this complex like
- 54:48emotions running across the space because you see when he's
- 54:50telling his Bat his dad that's not how you ask for a favor on
- 54:53his deathbed and the dad like gets up and it's like I can't
- 54:58believe and it starts like, you know, giving a half-ass a
- 55:02begging. That was the King dies.
- 55:06He's sad. So there was anger before and
- 55:10then once the king finally dies, he's upset and visibly, you
- 55:15know, shaken by the King's death.
- 55:18So they're very complex daddy issues happening here which we
- 55:21never quite get into. We just don't, there's not
- 55:24enough time for it. I guess and there's a massive
- 55:26house cleaning upheaval Chief, counselor declares people
- 55:30Traders, whatever the little brothers arrested exiled.
- 55:34And then finally, poisoned. I just so emotional and sad
- 55:40because he's so young. That little brother is a child
- 55:43completely innocent. He loves his brother, he loves
- 55:46his brother. That's the thing.
- 55:48It's like he loves the OG King, like with unconditionally,
- 55:53there's nothing. He doesn't know what's going on.
- 55:57And you just feel so much for the kid cuz he's getting dragged
- 56:02away from his mom. He doesn't know why they're
- 56:04locking up in jail. Why?
- 56:06Doesn't know. And when he shows up when the
- 56:09oig king finally shows up, he runs that the kid runs out and
- 56:12he's like what took you so long like but just very pitiful.
- 56:16Yeah. And that hurt it her and it was
- 56:19unclear as well. If the OG King believed, the
- 56:25lies that they told about the little kid or he just accepted
- 56:30them because he wanted to kill his own brother out of hate or
- 56:34spite. I don't know.
- 56:35Yeah, it's very Clear, there's a lot that happened in that first
- 56:39episode, a lot of murder and that was like, I don't know who
- 56:42any of these people are. I'm not sure who I'm supposed to
- 56:44care about and I was like, and all I see it's just this one
- 56:50dude killing everybody. Yeah, my little, my only note
- 56:54for the first episode is literally the king and clown or
- 56:56both annoying. Oh, I didn't go so far as to say
- 57:01that if I have to hear, are you not afraid of the heavens one?
- 57:06More time. I think I'll just flip a table
- 57:09because they said that's so much throughout the show and
- 57:12especially in the first episode because that was when a lot of
- 57:15Carnage and stuff was happening. But I do like how in the first
- 57:20episode they introduced, of course, Hassan and they have
- 57:24this big juxtaposition between the two of them, where Hassan is
- 57:28just, so good-natured and kind, and fun, and charismatic.
- 57:32And, of course, episode ends with the meeting of the Angers
- 57:37and you have this great sequence of the king, just like get it OG
- 57:41King getting up and like going to stand, close to him with the
- 57:44light. I like the lamp in his face.
- 57:47They're both shocked. And they the way that y'all
- 57:52jingu is standing between the two of them, like it's vastly
- 57:57different. It is a very physical
- 57:59performance that I feel he's putting on and the demeanor
- 58:04everything about like the micro You know, facial changes that
- 58:08he's making between the two of them.
- 58:09It is a completely different character that he's putting on
- 58:13between the OG King and Hassan. And I love how the OG King is
- 58:18like, repeat after me like say this you fool, can't you play
- 58:21your role properly and he ends up saying the same exact line is
- 58:27the king. He wants him to pretend to be
- 58:29him for a second and he says the lie like you fool, can't you
- 58:33play a role properly and even It is the same because it's your
- 58:38jingu like saying the same line. It is still.
- 58:43A different performance. You know what I'm saying?
- 58:46Yeah, no. That was, even though I didn't
- 58:48necessarily like, either characters seojun, go just did
- 58:50such an amazing job of establishing that they are
- 58:53different people and there's a, there's a lot of movies, like,
- 58:57you mentioned, like, The Parent Trap earlier, like where it's
- 59:00very clearly. The same person just just
- 59:02they're playing the same person twice more or less, right?
- 59:05But no, he does such a good job of.
- 59:07It doesn't like you could have told me that you didn't go has
- 59:10like a twin and they were just both there and like I'd have
- 59:12been like that makes. Right.
- 59:14Okay. If I didn't know anything, I'd
- 59:15be like know. That makes a lot of people.
- 59:17A lot of people thought Lindsay Lohan, had a twin Yeah, it's the
- 59:21same kind of deal here. I feel like he just knocked it
- 59:25out of the park. He did.
- 59:27It was like, even just watching like the the two characters,
- 59:30like walk like the king had like the Swagger all the time, it was
- 59:33really funny. I was like I wouldn't expect him
- 59:35to and like because he's a king but men like because of his
- 59:39personality kind of makes sense. He has more of like a Swagger
- 59:41when he walks whereas Hassan was actually more like up, right?
- 59:46And proper and I think it's because he's more unsure of
- 59:48himself most of the time. So he's like I have to like Be
- 59:51this and I'm like if you had like five seconds to watch the
- 59:54king walk around like no. Yeah but yeah, it was absolutely
- 1:00:00riveting to see the two vastly different performances and I
- 1:00:05think that people don't talk about this a lot.
- 1:00:10Like I don't hear people talking about guilty and go in the
- 1:00:12clowns and the crown clown. No, I remember.
- 1:00:15It was really popular when it was airing and then like no one.
- 1:00:19Nothing. Yeah.
- 1:00:20Like where's the give the man his due?
- 1:00:23He's amazing. I wonder though if that's
- 1:00:24because like early. So, this is 2019 right early.
- 1:00:28Yeah. Early. 2019 was because Hotel De
- 1:00:32Luna came out immediately after and Absolute Boyfriend.
- 1:00:34I think was airing at the same time.
- 1:00:36So it was like so much back to Act like everyone jumped from
- 1:00:40the crown clown to like hotel de luna.
- 1:00:43I think so that might because he did a really good job in that
- 1:00:45too, in my opinion. I so I dropped hotel de luna,
- 1:00:50all, really? I it's one of my favorites.
- 1:00:53Like, I actually scary watching it before before.
- 1:00:57So it's, this is a total tangent, but I stopped watching
- 1:01:01hotel de luna because they were trying to make.
- 1:01:04I you like this really fabulous villain, And I was like, I don't
- 1:01:09see I you as a Villain Like period, she's not threatening in
- 1:01:12any manner. So she's so she's not a villain
- 1:01:14in the show. No, I understand.
- 1:01:17I get that from the promo and everything and the tiny Clips
- 1:01:20I've seen on social media. She's not the villain but she is
- 1:01:25kind of an antihero kind of dude and like it just wasn't working
- 1:01:29for me. I was like, she's a fairy, you
- 1:01:32know. No saying, knowing I, you know
- 1:01:34that that makes sense. I think going in being like, I
- 1:01:37have no, like, I went in because Him not her.
- 1:01:40I was like, I'm gonna watch this one because it's fantasy too
- 1:01:42because, you know, Jin goo. So yeah.
- 1:01:45Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:01:48I feel you. And it's a well like drama.
- 1:01:51I'm just um, one of those people.
- 1:01:53Anyway. Um, getting back to the ground
- 1:01:55clown. They kill off this poor little
- 1:01:58Palace. Maid and like episode two
- 1:02:00brutal, she get poisoned and I like how the queen is the only
- 1:02:06person who can be Near him. And she gently cleans his hands
- 1:02:10off because he still has all this blood on his hands and
- 1:02:13she's got such a calming effect on, not just him but on the
- 1:02:18audience, I feel. Because as soon as she enters
- 1:02:20the frame I'm like I'm just so calm and relaxed right now, like
- 1:02:25she's just very ethereal in that way.
- 1:02:30Something that was not ethereal at all.
- 1:02:31Was the heartbreaking episodes, like, 435 haasan's little sister
- 1:02:38gets raped. Oh my gosh, I the left State
- 1:02:41councillor, son. And I was just devastated.
- 1:02:44I was devastated. Like she goes, mute and
- 1:02:46everything from the trauma. It's just so bad.
- 1:02:50I am glad he got Punished a lot for that.
- 1:02:56I don't. So you were okay with it.
- 1:02:58We're not. Okay, but you felt like the
- 1:03:00punishment fit the crime. No.
- 1:03:02But at least something happened. Well, he made a fun distinction,
- 1:03:08though, not long after that because he gets scared and
- 1:03:10leaves the palace and it comes back after.
- 1:03:13You know he finds out what happened to the sister and
- 1:03:15everything and he's just full of Rajon wants to avenge her, his
- 1:03:21sister like rightfully so and he says I don't want to kill him, I
- 1:03:26don't just want to kill that dude.
- 1:03:29Like I want him to suffer and be punished for the crime that he
- 1:03:34committed not just for me to kill him for some of the thing
- 1:03:38or punish him for some other misdeed and I found that really
- 1:03:41interesting like it's almost delayed satisfaction.
- 1:03:45Yes and he waited What I'm saying?
- 1:03:48You waited all that time to have this opportunity on meant to
- 1:03:53punish him and brand him for being a rapist.
- 1:03:56And he not only did that but he established a new precedent.
- 1:04:00He was like, I'm going to change the law.
- 1:04:01How about that? And I was like damn like that is
- 1:04:05like King King material right there.
- 1:04:07Yeah, it was definitely a boss. Move of.
- 1:04:10We're just going to rewrite the law which the law should have
- 1:04:12been rewrote, where the bottom tier and the hierarchy, there
- 1:04:17doesn't. Matter what happens to them,
- 1:04:19like there's punishment for everything except them.
- 1:04:22Like are you kidding, didn't you just want to like, shoot the guy
- 1:04:25when the kid goes He standing in front of the King, right?
- 1:04:31He just got accused of rape and he did it.
- 1:04:33He's not denying that he did it, but he's like, it doesn't
- 1:04:37matter. I'm it doesn't matter because
- 1:04:40she's a low-class of kid, like, low-class girl, I was just
- 1:04:44matter. So, angry I was like, oh my God,
- 1:04:49I just want to throw hands at that point, right?
- 1:04:51And then they're still like human punish you anyway.
- 1:04:55I feel like he doesn't think of her as you know, and the King
- 1:04:59Hassan is saying like, oh, I'm gonna do all this and he's like,
- 1:05:02you can't your highest. You can't do that.
- 1:05:04Like, who the hell do you think you are?
- 1:05:07Like, telling me what I can and cannot do.
- 1:05:09Like, it was just mistake after mistake, after mistake with that
- 1:05:12kid. You taught.
- 1:05:15Let's talk about like how the side characters and everyone
- 1:05:18around. Hassan fell in love with him
- 1:05:20because you said earlier that, you didn't like that.
- 1:05:23So talk to me about that. Like, what do you, what do you
- 1:05:26think in there? I just I I don't know what it is
- 1:05:31about Hassan, this is really rubs me the wrong way, where I'm
- 1:05:33like, what honestly, I feel like if I was like in his presence to
- 1:05:36like in that I'd have been like the same of know this kids great
- 1:05:38like whatever. But the same time I'm like,
- 1:05:40everybody's like, oh we're gonna pretend you're the king for a
- 1:05:43while and we're gonna just fall in line and you're great and
- 1:05:46charming, and it's not like he's an actor.
- 1:05:48Of course, he's Charming. Like like, he's a clown.
- 1:05:51That's that's it sound like I hope, I don't know.
- 1:05:57I have trust issues. I guess.
- 1:05:58So I would have been like, I don't know.
- 1:05:59I want to trust this kid. And then like he had his moments
- 1:06:04where he was hot-headed to and he would go do really stupid
- 1:06:06stuff that they don't have to go get fixed or a lot of people
- 1:06:09were going to die that were trying to help him.
- 1:06:12It's like I also feel like he was very impulsive.
- 1:06:16Yes, decisive in ways that the people around him in the chief
- 1:06:20secretary more not and sometimes he it definitely worked outside.
- 1:06:24Yeah. Push things forward in a
- 1:06:26positive way and made good decisions, while he was on the
- 1:06:30throne. And what was cool was.
- 1:06:33Even though he had the chief secretary like, breathing down
- 1:06:35his neck, telling him what to say, telling him, you know how
- 1:06:38to comport himself and, you know, memorize this and you
- 1:06:42can't read and all this stuff as soon as he walks in, and he's
- 1:06:46sitting on the throne, whatever he says goes.
- 1:06:48Yep. So he can go Rogue and he does
- 1:06:51pretty heated of the time. And it was really entertaining
- 1:06:55to see as an audience member, but it was really satisfying to
- 1:06:59see also as an audience member because you have Tagging is here
- 1:07:03with an. In fact he's an infallible
- 1:07:05protagonist and everyone falls in love with him.
- 1:07:09Not just because he's so young Jin, goo and handsome and
- 1:07:13Charming. Um, they are moved by him and
- 1:07:16his impeccable moral compass by his righteousness and his caring
- 1:07:20attitude towards the people. Because he comes from the
- 1:07:24people, he is of that lower class and so he is making giant
- 1:07:28changes in the government, that is benefiting.
- 1:07:32Being not just the ruling class. It's benefiting everybody and
- 1:07:37it's throwing everybody in a tizzy.
- 1:07:40Yeah, I like the the side where it's the stuff that like helps
- 1:07:43the more common people like definitely like respect, but
- 1:07:46it'd be like the other things were.
- 1:07:47He just go have like a ranting like have a fit with like the
- 1:07:49queen Dowager because she likes lighted the queen or something.
- 1:07:52I was like, okay, I get it but I'm like I'll give you the right
- 1:07:56move dude. You that?
- 1:07:58Yes, he's kind of going head-to-head with the queen
- 1:08:00Dowager and there's a lot of tete-a-tete.
- 1:08:02It's between them where you're just like you don't really have
- 1:08:05the upper hand here. Yeah.
- 1:08:06So why are you dig yourself a deeper hole?
- 1:08:08Your other people are going to have to clean it up or you're
- 1:08:11gonna get somebody killed that. You're trying to not get killed,
- 1:08:14I don't understand where you're coming from.
- 1:08:16There is a long laundry list of achievements that Hassan did
- 1:08:20throughout the show and I have them here.
- 1:08:22So here let me know, let me know if I'm missing any so here go he
- 1:08:26saves the Queen's father from an unjust execution.
- 1:08:30So instead he exiled Him he saves the queen from analyzing
- 1:08:35herself because at one point she like took a dagger, she was
- 1:08:38going to stab herself because the whole thing he saves her, he
- 1:08:43recruits the lowborn Huggle, who's like the mathematician
- 1:08:47like I love Rehan character. He also has like crush on Hassan
- 1:08:52by the end of it was adorable, loved it on that vein.
- 1:08:58He literally steps all over the aristocratic some kumquats
- 1:09:01Scholars for A horse whole girls promotion because they weren't
- 1:09:05even letting him in the palace, like, makes no sense but he
- 1:09:09holds special stating exams were anybody?
- 1:09:12No matter their station. Could sit for the tax reform
- 1:09:16thing. We're only land owners will have
- 1:09:17to pay taxes, refuses to send tens of thousands of soldiers to
- 1:09:23Ming for their war. And he has these lines that are
- 1:09:27really wonderful. He's like as a father of this
- 1:09:30nation, how could I send? They're my sons to their death.
- 1:09:34That also like he takes ownership of the people and he
- 1:09:40really advocates for them. And at that point he tears all
- 1:09:44the ministers to personally go to war for me.
- 1:09:47If it's so important to them like why don't you just pick up
- 1:09:49and go and I'm like it's great he refuses to depose the queen
- 1:09:56because she has a little hissy after finding out that he's not
- 1:10:00the king and like just Leaves the palace to go visit her dad
- 1:10:05and Exile. And that was frustrating because
- 1:10:10it was not on his end, but on hers.
- 1:10:11Because, like, I get why she left and then, like, you gotta,
- 1:10:14like, save her basically, but he couldn't say why he wasn't mad
- 1:10:17at her. It was like, like, yeah,
- 1:10:20situationally aggravating true. He's like, he's not like, well,
- 1:10:25I'm not really who I said I was. So, she got mad and just like,
- 1:10:29jump shit. No, he can't say that.
- 1:10:30What he does is he blackmails the queen?
- 1:10:32Dowager's, so that she could return.
- 1:10:34No consequences, great idea. He refused to Simply kill the
- 1:10:41left State Chancellor's sun, which we talked about before he
- 1:10:44waits until he can be punished for the crime that he committed
- 1:10:48and sets a new precedent. All this great stuff.
- 1:10:51Then he at in the final, couple of vessels crushes, the coup
- 1:10:55from the giant villain team-up that I didn't because I was
- 1:10:58Queen, Dowager joins hands with the left state councillor.
- 1:11:02And one of the princes Prince, Jim peeing, or whatever was also
- 1:11:07in the mix and like, had develops the army of, like,
- 1:11:103,000 soldiers. It's like nuts.
- 1:11:12So, all these three people join hands and were trying to
- 1:11:17Dethrone him. That was so messy too, because
- 1:11:19they were all like plotting against each other.
- 1:11:21The same time. Nobody was like on their side.
- 1:11:24Like nobody was truly. Loyal to the other person.
- 1:11:29So there was a lot of like in squabbles between them and stuff
- 1:11:33which is fun like fun to watch. There's so much stuff, good
- 1:11:39stuff that he did and he also stopped the queen from analyzing
- 1:11:43herself a second time. This.
- 1:11:46Oh my God. That's right.
- 1:11:48The second time. And then he saves her.
- 1:11:51Like I said before, you took to two arrows in the back or
- 1:11:54something, one are on the back for her.
- 1:11:56Yeah, this is great. I really liked speaking of the
- 1:12:01queen in episodes 6 to 7 or so they go.
- 1:12:06A date out in the town. That was so cute.
- 1:12:10Is fucking wonderful. So they eat like a stew with
- 1:12:15tripe and pig's heart and it's kind of like low, not low
- 1:12:20quality cuts of meat, but it's just like common, a commoners
- 1:12:24meal and it's so sweet. How she eats it like a champ.
- 1:12:28He's like, what is this? And then he tells her what it
- 1:12:30is. She kind of makes a face and
- 1:12:31then she just he's like, well we don't have to eat her if you
- 1:12:33don't want to, she's just like already swallowing asleep.
- 1:12:36Great. And then she'd noticed that
- 1:12:39this, at this point, she's like noticing different things about
- 1:12:41him. And she's like, it seems like
- 1:12:43you've eaten this before and he's like, no, no, no.
- 1:12:46I have I haven't done anything yet.
- 1:12:49They go to buy the compass later and he haggles with the sales
- 1:12:53guy and she's like, it seems like you've done this a hundred
- 1:12:57times before it. He's like, I've never done that
- 1:12:59before. It's great.
- 1:13:01I really liked when he asked her when they were eating and he
- 1:13:04asked her, the question of like, which house would they want to
- 1:13:06stay? And she's like this one and he's
- 1:13:08like, that's the smallest one here.
- 1:13:10She's like, why exactly? Like so?
- 1:13:13I, we don't have to do anything besides turn our heads to see
- 1:13:16each other and I was like, oh, I want this kind of love.
- 1:13:18This is why I'm single. This is what a standard, such a
- 1:13:22good green flag, man, and such a wonderful well-spoken lady
- 1:13:27because she's just like, want that house over there small
- 1:13:30house while you want it. We just have to turn our heads
- 1:13:34to look at each other and it's so sad because in the X of the
- 1:13:37palace. They have entirely separate
- 1:13:40wings, that are far from one another.
- 1:13:44And so she's speaking from experience, she would rather be
- 1:13:49close to him and she would rather have this long commute
- 1:13:53home to be with him for longer periods.
- 1:13:56Of time is just like, uh, beautiful beautiful words and I
- 1:14:01adore the queen and that date that they had was just
- 1:14:05beautiful. I think in that episode though,
- 1:14:09he gets tossed in the pit, I think it's the tiger pit comes
- 1:14:16back. Can comes back.
- 1:14:18He gets tossed. In the tiger pit.
- 1:14:19Did you get like Dark Knight Rises Vibes or was that just me?
- 1:14:24Is it just me? It's been a while because he
- 1:14:27knows, okay, okay, so Dark Knight Rises, they throw Batman
- 1:14:32in a pit. Basically, I don't remember that
- 1:14:33at all. And he has to cut, not adapt it,
- 1:14:36but it's like almost looks like a giant well, and it's full of,
- 1:14:41you know, a bunch of other prisoners.
- 1:14:43And the only way to get out is to climb out and that's why I'm
- 1:14:47saying that this seeing kind of felt like Dark Knight Rises,
- 1:14:50because he climbs out of this It and bit by bit.
- 1:14:56He's almost out. There's a flashback of him,
- 1:14:59getting stabbed by the chief secretary and the chief
- 1:15:02secretary going, like, clown. Hassan is dead.
- 1:15:05You are now the king, like furniture, mattock, and just as
- 1:15:08he's about to, essentially, get out and be reborn.
- 1:15:13These wolves descend and pushing back down into the pit and I
- 1:15:17felt like, oh, this is like a metaphor.
- 1:15:19This is my thinking cap, right? This is like a metaphor for like
- 1:15:22the beasts of the political thing.
- 1:15:24But he's trying to overcome and they keep like tearing him down
- 1:15:27and all this stuff. Yeah.
- 1:15:29I quite like that seen and felt very important felt so bad.
- 1:15:33When he fell back down after like the wolves or whatever,
- 1:15:35showed up, I was just like, oh oh, oh he's in so much pain
- 1:15:38already. Yeah, no.
- 1:15:42Yeah. But the king comes back and that
- 1:15:45episode is crap because he tries to undo everything that Hassan
- 1:15:52did even if it was good. Out of spite or jealousy or so
- 1:15:56frustrating reassert himself into the mix and he imprisons
- 1:16:02the kissing lady and the Rain Man guy.
- 1:16:06All song, whatever his name is and the chief secretary has no
- 1:16:12choice but to come back and kneel before him and what the
- 1:16:16king says is. So just diabolical, he says, do
- 1:16:21not turn your back against me ever again.
- 1:16:23Should you be Tre me, I will crush all of your loved ones to
- 1:16:26death and see everything, your everything in your life.
- 1:16:32Everything you've worked for in your life, come to nothingness.
- 1:16:35And I was like, he said it with a smile on his face and I was
- 1:16:38like, Damn yeah, that is pretty bad, pretty Sinister.
- 1:16:44Yeah, he's just not a not a good guy all around let's put it.
- 1:16:48Let's finish talking about him because in the very next episode
- 1:16:50episode 8, the chief secretary kills him honestly, as much as I
- 1:16:55didn't like him that like death scene got to me.
- 1:16:58I cry. I was like, it is the emotion
- 1:17:02that the Betrayal, like, the whole, like death, like speech.
- 1:17:06Oh, like him, like fighting it. And I Like talking about how
- 1:17:10betrayed he feels and I'm like, yeah my heart.
- 1:17:15Why do I feel bad for you? Yeah yeah you feel satisfaction
- 1:17:22that he's dying because he's just gone gone, completely mad
- 1:17:28and you feel so much pity at the same time because his life could
- 1:17:32have been different. I was just saying like earlier
- 1:17:34like he seemed to have been gentle and somewhat carrying
- 1:17:38toward the queen. Early in their marriage.
- 1:17:40And he also did want to enact the tax, the landowners law
- 1:17:46initially. And that just goes to show that
- 1:17:49he was so twisted and different. By the end, there was just no
- 1:17:53saving him and the scene is so devastatingly beautiful.
- 1:17:58The way it's shot like throughout the show is just
- 1:18:00beautiful cinematography but this scene what them silhouetted
- 1:18:04against the beach and the waves and the overhead shots of them
- 1:18:08like from Drone or helicopter or something?
- 1:18:12Golden Light is just the right Vibe.
- 1:18:15It's just heartbreaking and that he died the same way that he
- 1:18:19killed. His little brother in episode 1.
- 1:18:22It's just so, so sad and chief secretary is pulling through an
- 1:18:27all-time performance here because it's almost as if the
- 1:18:32king had asked to be killed. Mmm.
- 1:18:35And he's doing it against his better judgment, right?
- 1:18:39He's doing it because he wanted to die and that's not the case
- 1:18:44at all. Chief secretary like took it
- 1:18:45upon himself to just kill the king halfway through the show
- 1:18:49and it's so sad and mournful, and especially when the OG King
- 1:18:54says I wish you were my father as he's like trying to fight it
- 1:18:58and talking about like all this. It just emotional.
- 1:19:02Yeah. You could tell they were at one
- 1:19:04point really close. So yes, yeah, he's I don't want
- 1:19:09to do it but he knows that he has to do it.
- 1:19:11It's all these things put together.
- 1:19:13Just make it very important point in seen on a production
- 1:19:18side. Did you catch what they did with
- 1:19:19the score there? What did they do with the score
- 1:19:22of the mining? Oh my God.
- 1:19:23Okay, so so as he like die. So the way every episode was
- 1:19:27ending at least on Netflix was like, the seemed like the
- 1:19:30episode would. And, and then they would have
- 1:19:32liked the the few like snapshots of like different parts of the
- 1:19:35like thing, and they would have some score playing.
- 1:19:37It would be different for most episodes.
- 1:19:38I think to kind of fit the vibe. There was no music playing at
- 1:19:41the end of that. So as he dies, it's all you hear
- 1:19:45is the beach waves. And then when they start doing
- 1:19:47the photos from earlier in the episode, it's just the beach
- 1:19:50waves. I just I really I'm just really
- 1:19:57oh my God, as far as I remember, that was the only episode.
- 1:20:01They didn't have some sort of score playing with the photos.
- 1:20:05It's it's done, right? You know what I'm saying?
- 1:20:07Like it was just really well. Yeah, it was done really well
- 1:20:11really well damn. Damn.
- 1:20:15Okay. Now going back to Hassan episode
- 1:20:1910 and 9 there's like a lot of love vowels exchanged between
- 1:20:24the queen and Hassan. And in episode 10 he does like
- 1:20:28the scavenger hunt for him because for her because he
- 1:20:31leaves all these notes in the library and I of course you have
- 1:20:34the Like I miss you, even when I'm looking at you, I miss you
- 1:20:37line. They meet at the highest place
- 1:20:40in the palace and they kiss and it's so sweet and she tells him
- 1:20:44that she wants to have his child.
- 1:20:46Listen. So it's she tells him that she's
- 1:20:52ready to have his child or whatever because she had been of
- 1:20:55course, denying him the entire time.
- 1:20:57She doesn't know yet that it's Hassan the clown it ends up that
- 1:21:03the queen dowager. has been poisoning the queen this whole
- 1:21:06time for like a few months and she's now infertile Heartbroken
- 1:21:12for her because that is like such a core part of what she's
- 1:21:15obligated to do as Queen. But like it's part of any of ya.
- 1:21:21Any other king would have had to Dethrone her, pretty much family
- 1:21:25to go have it and he's like, no, it's like that's like this
- 1:21:28matter to me. It's fine.
- 1:21:29Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:21:31And in fact, he goes out of his way to keep his secret so that
- 1:21:33the court doesn't demand that she be dethroned because she
- 1:21:36can't have any kids. I found this devastating Being
- 1:21:40in the best way possible, if you get my drift because it was
- 1:21:45proper drama and properly teased throughout the show so that when
- 1:21:49it came upon us, we weren't like, oh my God, this came out
- 1:21:53of nowhere. They're just pulling stuff out
- 1:21:54of their hats. No, no it was, this was earned
- 1:21:58and I really appreciated that not only did he stick by her but
- 1:22:02he, it wasn't like a factor for him.
- 1:22:06Like he it didn't affect his love for her at all.
- 1:22:09It's just It makes me feel better and their communication
- 1:22:13was excellent like throughout the rest of the the show.
- 1:22:17And you know, she is dealing with not just a loss but it's a
- 1:22:23loss for, you know, her identity.
- 1:22:26And the reason why she's giving even in the palace and I love
- 1:22:30how he just supports her unconditionally he's like, oh my
- 1:22:34god, of course he's upset. Of course he wants to kill
- 1:22:36everybody involved. Of course he goes and fights
- 1:22:39with the queen dowager. Right after he finds out and
- 1:22:41it's all, you know, yes, but it's never directed at her.
- 1:22:46Yes. You know, it's never know,
- 1:22:48victim blaming or what have you. There's nothing of that and it
- 1:22:52just deepens their bond, really? Yeah, I think that's definitely
- 1:22:56a turning point because she tried to keep it secret from him
- 1:22:58too, and that's fine. Like her like made was like, no,
- 1:23:01I'm gonna spill it be. That's my favorite thing is,
- 1:23:05when he comes up to the baby's like tell me what the hell's
- 1:23:07going on here? Why is the queen said?
- 1:23:08She just drops she goes. By right underneath these look,
- 1:23:11I'm so sorry but I'm sorry, I just have to be punished or
- 1:23:14whatever the languages and there's like, not a ton the
- 1:23:19Queen's, like had the secret for what?
- 1:23:21Two hours. Yeah.
- 1:23:24What's know, yeah, I liked it a lot.
- 1:23:27I liked it. She finds his writing The
- 1:23:29Secret, Gets Out, because she finds the scraps of paper that
- 1:23:32he's been practicing the Chinese calligraphy on and it's just
- 1:23:37that's when she leaves the palace.
- 1:23:38She had A really tough reaction to him.
- 1:23:42She's like, who the hell are? You don't touch me.
- 1:23:46How dare you? And she has this really visceral
- 1:23:49reaction II. Don't blame her.
- 1:23:52But it's such a hard point because I'm like, I'd been like,
- 1:23:55okay, I don't know who this guy is, but he's clearly better than
- 1:23:58what I had. Yeah, because she starts like
- 1:24:03trying to piece it together. Like, when were they switched?
- 1:24:05Yeah. And she does realize when the
- 1:24:08real king king. Came back and they had those
- 1:24:11really bad like consummation night that never happened and
- 1:24:15she's like, oh, that wasn't him, you know, she's realizing when.
- 1:24:20Yeah I got I was in. I feel like I personally
- 1:24:23probably would have like, maybe not in the best judgment just
- 1:24:27been. Like, no, I'm fine with this.
- 1:24:32Nearly getting raped guy, who actually treats me.
- 1:24:35Nice, you know? Like, that's the thing is, like,
- 1:24:39she is. And they were saying, the, the
- 1:24:41chief secretary was saying that she's gonna dump you as soon as
- 1:24:44she finds out who you are, because she is so upright and
- 1:24:49thermal and she, she does end up against her tiny against her
- 1:24:55guilty conscience, and she ends up doing like three days of
- 1:24:58mourning for the, the OG King because Of course, she doesn't
- 1:25:01even like this, like terrible to her and then she's like fully
- 1:25:05onboard. She's like, okay, you're you're
- 1:25:08the king, okay? I think it fits her character
- 1:25:11while it just putting myself in the position.
- 1:25:14I definitely would like no, this is fine.
- 1:25:17Yeah, like I did then on board way sooner.
- 1:25:20I would not have tried to throw myself off a cliff.
- 1:25:22No. Damn, it was something about her
- 1:25:24trying to run alive herself after that.
- 1:25:26That was just like oh girl don't like come on.
- 1:25:28He's a guy Under full team. Yeah.
- 1:25:30Yeah, he was just lovely to you. Just accept the man and move on
- 1:25:36the villain left State councillor catches Hassan in the
- 1:25:39lie with the dagger around episode 12 13 and originally,
- 1:25:44the left state councillor was like, oh yeah, you had, you had
- 1:25:46this dagger given to you by the Ming and all that stuff.
- 1:25:50Complete lap lie fabrication because it was gift from the
- 1:25:53previous King to commemorate him, becoming the Crown Prince
- 1:25:56whatever I loved. That's when he threw the two
- 1:26:02coins at the yes let's say counselor and was like I am that
- 1:26:06dog that cost two coins or whatever and reveals who's his
- 1:26:10true identity to him and his full of like, Vigor and
- 1:26:14confidence and like Swagger and you're just like, yeah, like
- 1:26:18damn get it. I think I was so concerned with
- 1:26:21what was going to happen next. I was I really like super like
- 1:26:24into the moment even though it was a really cool moment.
- 1:26:25But I was like, okay, you got a problem, why are you so chill
- 1:26:30about it? It to where you can be like,
- 1:26:31like this because well, I think he was just like, well, The Jig
- 1:26:35Is up like when we gonna do? Yeah, let me come into it, like,
- 1:26:38with a little bit of a Swagger and just own it, you know, own
- 1:26:43up to it. I just, it would have put me
- 1:26:45straight to panic. I'd have been like, oh no, I
- 1:26:48would have been crying. Like, I'm not a person that if
- 1:26:50someone yells at me, or start screaming at me for whatever
- 1:26:54reason. I just start crying, babe.
- 1:26:57You caught me in a lie. This is the second crying right
- 1:27:02there. Don't tell me the real king
- 1:27:04tried to so curious. You were forced to do this.
- 1:27:08Yeah, I don't think I would have taken out the two coins from
- 1:27:13them at the man who has my secret.
- 1:27:15Anyway, what was brutal as well? Was that they killed her, dad,
- 1:27:19the Queen's Dad after he was finally exonerated so close to
- 1:27:24like a real reunions and it's taken away.
- 1:27:28Oh my god. Um, But after that she Grieves,
- 1:27:32it's terrible but he tip but Hassan takes her to the beach
- 1:27:36and like episode 14. And I adore this conversation
- 1:27:41that they have not just the cinematography, in the way, it's
- 1:27:43just gorgeous, right? She says, I will engrave this
- 1:27:47scenery on my heart so that I may come back to it.
- 1:27:49Even after we return to the palace.
- 1:27:51And he says, when spring comes, let's go see the flowers and
- 1:27:55summer. We will stand in the rain
- 1:27:57together and in the fall. How about we go Gathering?
- 1:28:00And he's making plans, like, that's a year's time, right?
- 1:28:05To get back to the winter weather.
- 1:28:07Now at the beach and she says is much.
- 1:28:09She's like, it seems like we're gonna be together for a while,
- 1:28:12and it's just beautiful beautiful lines, very romantic
- 1:28:17and it soothes her, you know. And it also kind of hints at the
- 1:28:23ending right where they leave the palace because in all those
- 1:28:27scenarios of them standing in the rain together, seeing the
- 1:28:30Hours Gathering chestnuts, there's not really an
- 1:28:33implication that there in the palace, when they do that, they
- 1:28:36are free and outside of the restrictions of the palace.
- 1:28:39And so I think that was a hint at the ending, which is there
- 1:28:44free of the palace and all of the politicking that we had seen
- 1:28:50throughout the entire show. So I really like that, that's
- 1:28:55just so nice. I one of the top at things top
- 1:28:59scenes in the show. Chief secretary throws it in the
- 1:29:04queen. Dowager has faced a he killed
- 1:29:05her son in very classic like put salt in an open wound to get a
- 1:29:12confession out of somebody that details of how her poor innocent
- 1:29:17son died and she just loses it. And what's sad to me is that the
- 1:29:22root, the OG King was so blinded by paranoia, that he ordered the
- 1:29:28killing of this innocent kid, but Hassan is the one that has
- 1:29:32to pay the consequences for what his doppelganger did and I find
- 1:29:37that really interesting. I don't know if there's anything
- 1:29:40else you want to add to that because I feel like that's kind
- 1:29:43of like I don't know. There's something about that.
- 1:29:47That makes. Yeah no I mean I guess I hadn't
- 1:29:49really thought about that too much but yeah like when it came
- 1:29:52to the queen Dowager really her Vendetta was against the OG
- 1:29:55queen king. So everything she did was
- 1:29:58because of that. And how.
- 1:30:01Yeah, he was at the legitimate heir to the throne and and like
- 1:30:06that was her whole thing. So, Honestly her hatred towards
- 1:30:10his son wasn't really wanted. It was weird just because he was
- 1:30:14the wrong place wrong time. Hi.
- 1:30:17Yeah, she and I like we were saying before how certain
- 1:30:21characters had Shades of Grey. I feel like she has Shades of
- 1:30:23Gray because she has every right to be upset and angry that her
- 1:30:28son was killed like nevermind installing him on the throne.
- 1:30:32He was straight up mert. Yeah.
- 1:30:35And for no reason, obviously he had no Nothing no traitorous
- 1:30:41thoughts or anything coming from like the 10 year old or
- 1:30:43whatever. So I found that really
- 1:30:46intriguing to think that she had reason she was.
- 1:30:51Well, within reason to try and like overthrow Hassan even if he
- 1:30:55was the was the kind of like wasn't even the real King, it's
- 1:30:58just like you're representing pain to me, you've wronged me
- 1:31:04the where you are and the chief secretary found this really
- 1:31:09Important as well where he finally swears fealty to Hassan
- 1:31:13and that he reveals that he held back, trusting him for fear that
- 1:31:19the throne would corrupt him just like the OG King.
- 1:31:22But after everything Hassan remains righteous and empathetic
- 1:31:28and despite the chief secretary revealing that he unilaterally
- 1:31:33killed the OG King Hassan is like.
- 1:31:37Takes the blame. He's like, this is my fault too,
- 1:31:39for because I wanted to be king and it obviously means that one
- 1:31:44of us had to go. And it's when he says that you
- 1:31:48just see it like the gears turning in the chief secretary's
- 1:31:52head, and he just kneels down, he does.
- 1:31:55And then him, and then Haase, first time, Austin kneels down
- 1:32:00and that whole scene. Oh my gosh.
- 1:32:04When Hassan kneels down I'm just like this is too perfect.
- 1:32:08Like it's, it was such a moving moment of like mutual respect
- 1:32:13for each other. And and finally coming to a real
- 1:32:17understanding and Trust on both sides because there was a trust
- 1:32:20on either side. Yeah that was a I loved it.
- 1:32:25I really liked the secretary, I'm not gonna lie.
- 1:32:28It was like I didn't fully understand everything with him
- 1:32:31because I was like the, the one guy that died.
- 1:32:33I'd before the show started that they kept mentioning and then
- 1:32:36there was like that whole like group of people that they kept
- 1:32:39meeting out in the woods and like yeah he was an extremist
- 1:32:43leader we're inside. Yeah.
- 1:32:46Yeah, yeah and they didn't I feel like they didn't do as good
- 1:32:49of a job kind of like dealing with that whole subplot.
- 1:32:52Right? Because he was basically
- 1:32:54undercover. Yeah.
- 1:32:56In the government still trying to do his best, which get the
- 1:33:01agenda, but she was doing, but it was like they Really explain,
- 1:33:04like, who these other people are.
- 1:33:05Like, obviously like some sort of extremist but like, outside
- 1:33:07of that I was like there's some guy who died here's book, like I
- 1:33:13don't know. Like are you just common people
- 1:33:15or like exiled or like I did. That was one of my issues with
- 1:33:19the show I will say is like that whole like story arc just kind
- 1:33:22of came and went as needed without excite agree.
- 1:33:25Anything I agree. Yeah they did a bad job
- 1:33:29explaining like why he was meeting these people in the
- 1:33:31bamboo forest and Why they were mad at him?
- 1:33:34I guess, he liked because of his part in the killing of their
- 1:33:38leader. Yeah.
- 1:33:40And then, he stayed basically in power in the government while
- 1:33:44everyone else had to like, deal with it and like become peasants
- 1:33:47and try and make ends meet some other way and live their lives
- 1:33:50similar way. You know, they held it against
- 1:33:53him. Yeah.
- 1:33:54Like it sounded like a pretty valid what they did.
- 1:33:57But no. Yeah, but it was like, I wish I
- 1:34:00had some kind of like, Connection to it.
- 1:34:03Or I could care about these random people because it would
- 1:34:06make more sense. Why he's like, kneeling on the
- 1:34:09ground trying to ask for forgiveness.
- 1:34:11Okay. And I was like we can we can
- 1:34:13skip the sea. Yeah I mean it just wasn't
- 1:34:18written quite well. I think we're all ready towards
- 1:34:22the end game episodes though, in our, in our talk and I'm not
- 1:34:25sure if there's anything else you wanted to say about it.
- 1:34:27Other than this part was satisfying to me, I had no
- 1:34:31issues with Now the whole coup and then trying to work it out.
- 1:34:35How is Hassan going to strategize his way out of this?
- 1:34:38Without the chief secretary by his side, he's rising to the
- 1:34:41occasion. He's playing things out.
- 1:34:44They never find the treacherous letter and it gets thrown in
- 1:34:47their faces at the assembly. All that stuff.
- 1:34:50I found that fine perfectly a. Yeah, I think it's okay.
- 1:34:53I think from not understanding kind of that time period in like
- 1:34:57Korea too much of like oh sudden they keep meeting and they keep
- 1:34:59telling each other what they're going to do.
- 1:35:02I was like why why are you telling people what you're gonna
- 1:35:05do? Like why does it take so long to
- 1:35:07Dethrone the queen Dowager? Like there they even they in the
- 1:35:11end gate of episodes they were like you're not technically
- 1:35:13dethroned yet so you could just take the throne and she was like
- 1:35:17you're right there was some of that where I was like okay how
- 1:35:20long have they been talking about the throne in her?
- 1:35:22They had ample time to just send her away.
- 1:35:25She was banished to The West Wing.
- 1:35:26Like I don't understand there was a little bit of like
- 1:35:29questions there that were lingering.
- 1:35:33I think the last thing that I have in my notes had to do with
- 1:35:36Hassan having a one-on-one with the queen Dowager and it's a
- 1:35:41culmination for me all his troubles with his confidence or
- 1:35:46feeling inadequate or out of his depth in the palace are all gone
- 1:35:51here. He's literally standing
- 1:35:53toe-to-toe with her and there are there's no Rage or explosive
- 1:35:58outbursts to make him seem lesser than her, they're on
- 1:36:01equal. Playing fields and she's talking
- 1:36:05all this shit about social status and Royal Blood.
- 1:36:09And he's countering her with a full open heart and integrity,
- 1:36:14talking about Behavior. How can you act this way?
- 1:36:17And at one point, he says, like blood is all you have.
- 1:36:24And he wins like he wins there, talk their argument or whatever.
- 1:36:28In this tete-a-tete they have. And I was like, this is strong.
- 1:36:32That kingly shit that he's doing here.
- 1:36:35Then he just walks away. He's like by like no he's not
- 1:36:39really worried that she called him there to kill him like he's
- 1:36:41just there to buy time and show face and it's wonderful.
- 1:36:47I really like that. Yeah that was definitely a good
- 1:36:50team but yeah. Overall like the last like
- 1:36:52ending like the last few episodes with like the coup and
- 1:36:56everything it was like it was mostly well done.
- 1:36:58I would say Yeah, yeah, I would agree.
- 1:37:02Okay. And then we already talked about
- 1:37:04the last 20 minutes, so we don't have to do that.
- 1:37:07Um, is there any other God, any other notes that you have about
- 1:37:13the crown clown? No, I think that was those
- 1:37:16everything I just, I had like, these are just random like
- 1:37:19comments or really funny like when um, when the secretary
- 1:37:23stabs how soon to. So it's a mimic the scar from a
- 1:37:26bro right bro, but it was so funny when it And and has to go.
- 1:37:31So you're telling me not to run away or die and then why'd you
- 1:37:33stab me? And I was like, that's such a
- 1:37:35mood and then like my next note goes.
- 1:37:38Oh, there is a reason right? Well, I'm confused about, I
- 1:37:44guess. Why did he March him up this
- 1:37:46Giant mountain only to like drag him nearly to the edge of the
- 1:37:51cliff, and then stabbed him directly in the chest and give
- 1:37:54this super dramatic line. Like the Clown house on this
- 1:37:58bed, like the q word. Oh the king and for what like
- 1:38:02you could have just done this somewhere else.
- 1:38:04Like I don't know. It was it's for just a quick
- 1:38:07Harry. Yeah.
- 1:38:09It's for the nice. Yes, for the G.
- 1:38:10You know, just to show not for any particular reason to be like
- 1:38:15drag him up and he was like Breathing heavily heavily
- 1:38:18breathing, he had sweat all over him, like it was a trek to get
- 1:38:22up there, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:38:25I think it was a bit of symbolism, really of like, I
- 1:38:30think is where it comes from of, like, like the disclosure of
- 1:38:32like your real life and like, starting a new life, we're gonna
- 1:38:38more or less toss the old life off the off the cliff here.
- 1:38:42I think that was the point of that.
- 1:38:44If we're gonna do this here and also there's so many eyes in the
- 1:38:47walls of the palace that I feel like Kim just stop.
- 1:38:51And then they're like, it's just asking somebody to walk in right
- 1:38:54at the wrong moment. Yeah, here's my thing too.
- 1:38:58Is that they're often like Having important conversations
- 1:39:01between one another revealing conversations between one
- 1:39:04another. And I'm like so look the what
- 1:39:07the walls are literally made of paper saying.
- 1:39:11There's no way that there's nobody else that hears this and
- 1:39:16knows your story and the secret. So it was kind of funny to me,
- 1:39:21it's a recurring thing in socks with a like shut the doors.
- 1:39:24Everyone leave the room and I'm like, they're standing right
- 1:39:28outside the door. Like all of your everything's
- 1:39:30aren't there. Yeah I it's a silly problem.
- 1:39:35I have in like all of the historical dramas I watch but
- 1:39:38there is the the one with the E Min-ho.
- 1:39:44Faith. No, no, it's modern day.
- 1:39:47Like palace stuff and I'm living.
- 1:39:49I owe the king of tournament. Yes.
- 1:39:52Yes. I would, they actually pointed
- 1:39:54out in that one, they're like, because it's like somebody's
- 1:39:58literally standing there and they're like, yeah.
- 1:39:59I was listening on the other side of the wall, I was like,
- 1:40:03thank you. I'm glad it's acknowledged
- 1:40:04somewhere, right? It's literally a paper.
- 1:40:08It's literally like you could poke a hole through that.
- 1:40:12At and it'd make no difference anyway um I really appreciate
- 1:40:17you coming on the show and talking for an extended length
- 1:40:20of time on a very well done Saga.
- 1:40:22Look, I think you can agree. It's pretty well done.
- 1:40:25Despite your qualms with it and your low Hoops or for it.
- 1:40:29I would still recommend it to people who like this type of
- 1:40:32show because it's just not for me personally.
- 1:40:35Gotcha. But I think it was really well
- 1:40:37done. The acting was amazing.
- 1:40:39The production is amazing. Yeah.
- 1:40:41Even like the little Settle things with like the score, like
- 1:40:44with the the episode, where the King dies and then it's just the
- 1:40:48beach. Waves is all you here.
- 1:40:50Stop like I'm getting emotional, it's just so good.
- 1:40:55Well done. So no, I would still recommend
- 1:40:57it, even though I personally wasn't super super into it fair
- 1:41:03fair. I would definitely recommend it.
- 1:41:04I think it's actually quite underrated because I just don't
- 1:41:08see people talking about the crown clown, like, they should,
- 1:41:11you know, people talking about hotel do Luna same year.
- 1:41:13What are we doing? Why are we talking about the
- 1:41:15crown clown? Like, come on anyway.
- 1:41:18Yeah, thank you Alex, thank you so much for being able to watch
- 1:41:2116 hours of television with me. I had so much fun.
- 1:41:26Oh good. I'm so glad every day.
- 1:41:27So it was like, I had so much fun.
- 1:41:28I'm like, oh, that is music to my ears.
- 1:41:31I love to hear it. Where can people find you
- 1:41:33online? Alex.
- 1:41:34Um, well, the podcast is on all the platforms and then I am on
- 1:41:38Twitter and Instagram and I'm slowly getting it, a tick tock
- 1:41:42but I don't know. Doing so it's just kind of
- 1:41:44there. Yeah mostly on Instagram I think
- 1:41:46at this point. So okay nice so follower at all.
- 1:41:50Hull you been. Wow I'm so sorry at how you been
