Transcript
- 0:02You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:05Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:07On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:11preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:14learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:17For Advent 2025 we are in a series called Brought to the
- 0:21Light, Advent for all who need it.
- 0:23This series is looking at the themes of Advent and how Jesus
- 0:26comes to us all. You can find more information
- 0:29about our church at fumccollingswood.org.
- 0:33Thanks for listening. I want you to close your eyes
- 0:40for just a moment and think back over the years to your very
- 0:47favorite Christmas present that you ever received.
- 0:51All right, go ahead. You got it in your mind.
- 0:57OK, You can open your eyes. It just helps you think for a
- 0:59minute. I want to hear a few of them
- 1:01shout out a few of your favorite gifts.
- 1:04Easy bake oven, sewing machine, a bicycle, a guitar, all kinds
- 1:15of good stuff. That's great.
- 1:17Chances are, chances are that. Whatever the gifts you thought
- 1:24of was, it was something that you wanted rather than something
- 1:30you needed, right? When I think back over some of
- 1:34the best Christmas presents that I have received, rarely do the
- 1:38gifts that I needed rank near the top of the list, right?
- 1:42It's not the new belt that I needed, or the kitchen appliance
- 1:46that replaces the one that burnt out, or the proverbial socks and
- 1:51underwear, right? They they don't often make it to
- 1:54the top of the list. It was the gifts that I wanted
- 1:59that stick out in my mind, The things I wouldn't have
- 2:02necessarily gotten for myself. The things that seemed maybe a
- 2:07bit indulgent, sometimes even the things I didn't know I
- 2:12wanted until I had it, right. And there's a reason for this,
- 2:16right? It's because there's a
- 2:17difference between a want and a need, even if society has
- 2:23blurred the lines of distinction between the two.
- 2:25Wants are nice. Needs are necessary.
- 2:31This whole Advent season, our sermon series has been focused
- 2:35on some of the needs that we have.
- 2:37Our need for hope and peace and joy and love.
- 2:41And we've talked about how those needs can only really be met in
- 2:47Jesus. We've talked about how Jesus
- 2:49doesn't just bring us hope and peace and joy and love.
- 2:54He is hope. He is peace and joy and love.
- 3:01He is our hope. He is our peace and joy and
- 3:06love. And it's in the person of Jesus,
- 3:09the God who put on our humanity, our flesh and bones, and and
- 3:15entered into the world that he created, that the deepest needs
- 3:21of our souls are met. And so the title for this
- 3:27sermon, Jesus for all who need him.
- 3:32It's a little bit tongue in cheek because the reality is,
- 3:36friends, we all need him, right? Who among us doesn't need hope
- 3:43and peace and joy and love? So God came to us and God came
- 3:51for us. I love how the gospel writer
- 3:55John describes God's coming to us in the person of Jesus.
- 4:00Spoiler alert though, because in John's reflection on the
- 4:05incarnation, that is Jesus taking on our our flesh and
- 4:09bones. In John's version, there are no
- 4:12angels, there are no shepherds, there's no stable or Manger.
- 4:17John doesn't even talk about Mary and Joseph.
- 4:23So I want you to listen to how John talks about God's coming
- 4:27into the world. And John calls him here the
- 4:31Word, right? So when you hear the Word,
- 4:33you're thinking about the second person of the Trinity.
- 4:37Here it is from John chapter 1, beginning in verse one.
- 4:42In the beginning, the Word already existed.
- 4:48Tim, can we throw that up there? As I read it, the Word was with
- 4:54God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with
- 4:59God. God created everything through
- 5:03Him, and nothing was created except through Him.
- 5:07The Word gave life to everything that was created, and His life
- 5:12brought light to everyone. The light shines in the
- 5:16darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.
- 5:21God sent a man, John the Baptist, to tell about the light
- 5:25so that everyone might believe. Because of his testimony, John
- 5:28himself was not the light. He was simply a witness to tell
- 5:32about the light. The one who is the true light,
- 5:35who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
- 5:38He came into the very world he created, but the world didn't
- 5:42recognize him. He came to his own people and
- 5:46even they rejected him. But to all who believed him and
- 5:50accepted him, He gave the right to become children of God.
- 5:54They are reborn not with a physical birth resulting from
- 5:58human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.
- 6:03So the Word became human, and He made his home among us.
- 6:08He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness and we have
- 6:13seen His glory, the glory of the Father's one and only Son, the
- 6:22God who created everything, that is the God who gives light to
- 6:30all of creation. He was coming into the world.
- 6:34John tells us the the word of God.
- 6:36Remember, that's how John describes God the Son, the
- 6:40second person in the Trinity, the the word of God who was with
- 6:44God, who was God. The word became human, He took
- 6:49on our humanity and he made his home among us.
- 6:54He literally, it says he literally pitched his tent among
- 6:58us. And it's in him, in Jesus, that
- 7:04we've been given the fullest revelation of God's glory and
- 7:09his character who God is. The baby born in Bethlehem,
- 7:18swaddled in some some rags, some clothes, lying in the Manger,
- 7:24was the God who came for us. The Word taking on our humanity
- 7:32and becoming Jesus was the eternal light shining into the
- 7:38darkness which could never and can never be extinguished.
- 7:43He is the one we need, each of us, all of us, no exceptions.
- 7:53And John says that Jesus was full of unfailing love and
- 7:57faithfulness or or grace and truth, as some translations put
- 8:02it. And he came for us.
- 8:06He is Jesus for all who need him.
- 8:11And friends, that's all of us, right?
- 8:15Because he knew that there was no other way that we could come
- 8:21to him. Because he knew that sin had
- 8:25broken us and we couldn't heal ourselves.
- 8:30Because even when we didn't want him, we still needed him.
- 8:38And on that holy night, the night of our dear Savior's
- 8:45birth, the light shone in the darkness, and God gave us the
- 8:53greatest gift He could have ever given us.
- 8:56He gave us Himself. And Jesus was born for us all,
- 9:05because we all need Him. Amen.
- 9:11And then would you pray with me? And then I'm going to invite
- 9:13Christine and Arya to come and and sing some special music for
- 9:18us tonight. God, we are so grateful that you
- 9:25were willing to come to us to redeem us and save us because we
- 9:31could never make our way back to you on our own.
- 9:35We needed you and so you gave yourself to us, and tonight we
- 9:42want to give ourselves to you in response to all that you've
- 9:47done. We want to offer our love back
- 9:50to you because you loved us first.
- 9:53Thank you for taking the first step toward us even when we
- 9:57couldn't even step towards you. Thank you for giving us the gift
- 10:02of your son. We pray this all in Jesus name,
- 10:08Amen.
