Transcript
- 0:01Aspiration is frequently confused with the form of vital
- 0:04desire that wants some kind of spiritual development,
- 0:08experience or result. Aspiration, however, originates
- 0:13in the psychic being, while desire stems from the vital
- 0:16being. The characteristics of the two
- 0:19are therefore dramatically different from one another.
- 0:23It is human nature that we start by concentrating on the external
- 0:27personality and its wants, needs, desires and
- 0:31predilections. It is thus virtually inevitable
- 0:35that even when a true aspiration arises, initially it is mixed
- 0:40with the vital desire to attain, to accomplish, to succeed.
- 0:46Aspiration, however, does not demand, does not push, but opens
- 0:51itself, becomes receptive to the higher force and invites it to
- 0:56transform the nature. It is in the nature of a pure
- 1:00flame in the heart, and it does not expect or want anything, but
- 1:06makes itself ready for the divine force to work in the
- 1:09being, taking whatever time is needed as well as accepting
- 1:14whatever circumstances take place along the way.
- 1:20There is an apocryphal tale of the divine singer Narod, who is
- 1:23travelling the world. He came across a Yogi deeply
- 1:27concentrated in severe austerities, able to go into
- 1:31deep meditation and overcome the pull of the body, life and mind.
- 1:36As he concentrated 1 pointedly on liberation, he asked Nara to
- 1:41tell him how long it would take for him to achieve liberation.
- 1:46Nara replied that it would be just four more lifetimes.
- 1:50The Yogi became disconsolate and bemoaned his fate that he worked
- 1:55so hard but failed to achieve his liberation promptly as a
- 1:59result of his efforts. We see here the admixture of
- 2:04desire in his efforts. As Norad continued on his way,
- 2:09he came across a devotee singing and dancing ecstatically.
- 2:12In his feeling for the divine, he too asked Norad when he would
- 2:17achieve liberation. Narod pointed to a large tree
- 2:21and indicated that as many leaves as were on that tree
- 2:26would be the number of lifetimes for his liberation.
- 2:29Hearing this, the devotee burst out into song, ecstatic dance
- 2:33and weeping for joy, exclaiming, After such a short time, I will
- 2:38see my divine lover, a celestial voice proclaimed.
- 2:44You are liberated now. This devotee had a true
- 2:48aspiration not tainted by desire for immediate results.
- 2:54Sri Orobindo reminds us that it is the Divine which carries out
- 2:57the Sadhna. When we are able to shift to the
- 3:01Divine standpoint, we leave the ego, its ambitions, desires and
- 3:07wishes behind, and we allow the pure flame of aspiration to rise
- 3:12up and invite the Divine to carry out its intention in the
- 3:16being, Trior Ovindo notes quote. Aspiration should be not a form
- 3:23of desire, but the feeling of an inner soul's need and a quiet,
- 3:28settled will to turn towards the Divine and seek the Divine.
- 3:33It is certainly not easy to get rid of this mixture of desire
- 3:36entirely, not easy for anyone, but when one has the will to do
- 3:44it, this also can be affected by the help of the sustaining
- 3:50Force. End Quote.
