- 1:25Speaker 1: I'm Chris Hansen. We start with a mysterious killer who
- 1:28Speaker 1: acted like a chameleon, charming to the public, a terror
- 1:32Speaker 1: behind closed doors. And it all begins in Illinois when
- 1:35Speaker 1: a woman goes over to a friend's place to do
- 1:38Speaker 1: a little house sitting. A missing woman was a heinous crime,
- 1:46Speaker 1: stalked by a mystery man.
- 1:48Speaker 2: He's a chameleon, he had two faces.
- 1:53Speaker 1: It's a case that will lead investigators on a dark odyssey.
- 1:56Speaker 8: He really thought he was an out smart the police.
- 2:00Speaker 1: It's the final destination that no one saw coming.
- 2:03Speaker 9: I felt sick to my stomach.
- 2:05Speaker 10: I've never felt that somebody was so guilty of a
- 2:08Speaker 10: crime as I did in this.
- 2:13Speaker 1: It's Monday night in Machesney Park, Illinois. Todd and Katrina
- 2:17Speaker 1: Smith are hanging out at home.
- 2:19Speaker 9: Everything was great.
- 2:21Speaker 1: In fact, the lovebirds just returned from an anniversary trip
- 2:24Speaker 1: to Washington, d C. Celebrating seven years of wedded bliss on.
- 2:29Speaker 9: Her wedding day. I mean, I was happy for them.
- 2:30Speaker 11: I was excited that, you know, this was the person
- 2:34Speaker 11: she wanted to spend her life with and she was
- 2:36Speaker 11: going to be able to be a stepmom to his
- 2:38Speaker 11: three children.
- 2:38Speaker 9: Then you know, he seemed like a good fit for her, and.
- 2:41Speaker 1: There's plenty to celebrate, including a possible new job for
- 2:45Speaker 1: missus Smith. The thirty year old HR coordinator lands a
- 2:49Speaker 1: huge interview scheduled for the very next morning, and while
- 2:53Speaker 1: Katrina finishes up some laundry, she hops on her husband's
- 2:56Speaker 1: computer to finalize the details.
- 2:58Speaker 3: There were a string of emails between herself and her
- 3:01Speaker 3: new employer.
- 3:02Speaker 1: After confirming her morning meeting, Todd says, Katrina heads out
- 3:06Speaker 1: to a friend's condo, where she's currently house sitting. The
- 3:10Speaker 1: next morning, the forty four year old insurance and investment
- 3:13Speaker 1: broker sends a text to his wife which reads, good
- 3:16Speaker 1: luck at your interview. You're going to be awesome. Oddly,
- 3:19Speaker 1: Katrina doesn't respond. The day comes and goes and still
- 3:25Speaker 1: no work. Todd is getting really nervous, and suddenly the
- 3:29Speaker 1: phone range.
- 3:30Speaker 11: I got a phone call on October twenty third, maybe
- 3:33Speaker 11: around like seven pm from Todd saying that you know,
- 3:37Speaker 11: he asked me if I had talked to my sister,
- 3:40Speaker 11: and I said no. He said she didn't show up
- 3:42Speaker 11: for work and he hadn't talked to her since the
- 3:45Speaker 11: previous night and her big interview.
- 3:48Speaker 1: She misses that too.
- 3:51Speaker 11: She's very responsible, so I was immediately concerned. I knew
- 3:55Speaker 11: something wasn't right. I felt sick.
- 3:57Speaker 1: To my stomach, But just how wrong was it?
- 4:00Speaker 11: I asked him if they had had a fight, if
- 4:02Speaker 11: there was anything going on, and he said no, everything
- 4:05Speaker 11: was great.
- 4:06Speaker 1: So then where is Katrina Smith? Paniced Todd heads to
- 4:10Speaker 1: the sheriff station.
- 4:11Speaker 7: During the initial interview with tat Smith, he indicated that Katrina.
- 4:16Speaker 7: On October twenty second, Katrina had been there at his
- 4:20Speaker 7: house to do laundry, and then she was also going
- 4:23Speaker 7: to get on the computer and send some emails out
- 4:27Speaker 7: for an interview for a new job.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Investigators checked Todd's computer and confirm the emails sent from
- 4:33Speaker 1: Katrina to her potential new boss.
- 4:36Speaker 7: From the emails that we recovered on the computer that
- 4:38Speaker 7: it shows that she did send out some emails to
- 4:42Speaker 7: set up the interview that was earlier in the day
- 4:44Speaker 7: on the twenty second, and then he sends one more
- 4:47Speaker 7: last email and then Katrina responds at ten fifty four.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Immediately, investigators begin a search of the area. Katrina's family
- 4:57Speaker 1: sets up a Facebook page entitled find a Smith Where
- 5:00Speaker 1: they organized volunteer search parties. The Winnebago County Sheriff's Department
- 5:05Speaker 1: officially classifies Katrina Smith as a missing person and takes
- 5:10Speaker 1: the lead on the investigation.
- 5:11Speaker 7: That was the same night the vehicle was found.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Katrina's abandoned Chevrolet Cruise is discovered at the intersection of
- 5:18Speaker 1: Obispo Road and Ventura Boulevard, about two miles from her home.
- 5:22Speaker 12: With her car being found added some urgency to a
- 5:25Speaker 12: fact that does isn't just a missing person.
- 5:27Speaker 8: There was something definitely not right.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Investigators on the scene believe the car has been white
- 5:33Speaker 1: clean and tow it in for forensic processing. But there's more,
- 5:38Speaker 1: a lot more.
- 5:39Speaker 7: Once the vehicle was recovered, there was evidence or a
- 5:41Speaker 7: trail of evidence that was recovered.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Then two days later, another startling discovery. Local law enforcement
- 5:49Speaker 1: and volunteer searchers find Katrina's wallet and cell phone just
- 5:53Speaker 1: feet from her abandoned vehicle and something.
- 5:56Speaker 7: Else bloody paper towels.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Friends and family rally around Katrina's distraught husband, Tom Smith
- 6:02Speaker 1: as he makes please for her safe return.
- 6:05Speaker 13: It's been horrible. I just wanted to come home.
- 6:10Speaker 2: He was in the media constantly. Every day. He would
- 6:13Speaker 2: conduct daily interviews practically with the news media.
- 6:17Speaker 1: With Katrina's husband and family seemingly making every effort to
- 6:20Speaker 1: find the missing Illinois woman, authorities begin to speculate that.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Was a stranger who perhaps broke into the home, or
- 6:29Speaker 2: who perhaps stalked her. Maybe it was someone from her
- 6:33Speaker 2: church who stalked her.
- 6:35Speaker 1: In fact, there was an acquaintance from church, a juvenile
- 6:39Speaker 1: who knew the Smiths through a church youth group. And
- 6:42Speaker 1: get this, just two years before Katrina went missing, this
- 6:45Speaker 1: peeping Tom was charged with allegedly stalking the Smith's neighbor
- 6:49Speaker 1: by peering through her bedroom window.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Coincidence, she knew that somebody was following and watching her.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Was this peeping Tom stalking their neighbor or was he
- 6:57Speaker 1: stalking Katrina? Coming up? Could this peeping Tom be responsible
- 7:03Speaker 1: for Katrina's disappearance or someone else, maybe perhaps a secret lover.
- 7:07Speaker 12: A boyfriend that Katrina Smith had started seeing on the
- 7:11Speaker 12: side with a violent past, the domestic istione with his wife.
- 7:17Speaker 1: We're back with more of today's special investigation. The secret
- 7:21Speaker 1: Stalker Katrina Smith vanishes just hours before a big job interview.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Her family immediately knows something's wrong because she really wanted
- 7:29Speaker 1: that job, police would find her car.
- 7:31Speaker 6: And it certainly appeared like it was wiped clean.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Thirty year old Illinois wife and stepmom Katrina Smith is missing.
- 7:43Speaker 2: No trace of her. She had disappeared.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Her friends and family are desperate to find.
- 7:47Speaker 9: Her, do anything we could to bring her home.
- 7:51Speaker 1: It's day four in the search for Katrina Smith. Her
- 7:54Speaker 1: husband Todd speaks out once again to the media camera's
- 7:58Speaker 1: role as he has overcome with emotion.
- 8:00Speaker 8: They said they'd be back later.
- 8:04Speaker 6: And let's be heard of her.
- 8:08Speaker 1: As Katrina's friends and family organize another search, frantically looking
- 8:12Speaker 1: for any clues that will answer the question where is
- 8:16Speaker 1: Katrina Smith?
- 8:17Speaker 7: We're all just trying to be there for one another
- 8:19Speaker 7: and trying to stay positive.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Katrina's sister makes a heartbreaking post on the Facebook page, saying,
- 8:26Speaker 1: in part, Sissy, I love you more than words can describe.
- 8:30Speaker 1: I miss you terribly and the pain that I feel
- 8:33Speaker 1: is unbearable. But detectives believe they may be one step
- 8:38Speaker 1: closer to finding the missing Mtchesney Park woman. They zero
- 8:42Speaker 1: in on a juvenile arrested in Katrina's neighborhood with a
- 8:45Speaker 1: reported penchant for peeping.
- 8:47Speaker 2: She had no enemies, She had no one else that
- 8:50Speaker 2: wanted to harm her.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Then Sheriff's detectives from Winnebago make us stunning discovery and
- 8:56Speaker 1: now there is another man they're looking at. It turns
- 9:00Speaker 1: out Katrina has a secret.
- 9:02Speaker 12: There was a boyfriend that Katrina Smith had started seeing
- 9:07Speaker 12: on the side.
- 9:08Speaker 1: That's right, this married stepmother is having an affair.
- 9:12Speaker 2: She was very private, She was very secretive.
- 9:17Speaker 1: His name Guy Gabriel, a married man from a town over.
- 9:20Speaker 12: Guy Gabriel is a coworker of Katrina's, so she ultimately
- 9:26Speaker 12: started having a relationship with while she was still married
- 9:30Speaker 12: with Todd Smith.
- 9:33Speaker 1: And when cops run a background check on Katrina's secret lover,
- 9:36Speaker 1: the uncover of violent past.
- 9:38Speaker 12: And there was some issues with him is involved in
- 9:41Speaker 12: domestic issue with his wife.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Police records reportedly reveal an arrest for domestic battery. The
- 9:47Speaker 1: responding officer describes the reported attack.
- 9:50Speaker 14: The first thing I noticed was she had a large
- 9:52Speaker 14: knot on her forehead. Her face was really red and
- 9:55Speaker 14: it looked like she had been crying. Her eyes were red. Also,
- 9:58Speaker 14: she had a couple of scratches that I could see
- 9:59Speaker 14: on her throat in her chest.
- 10:01Speaker 1: The attending nurse paints a similar picture of alleged abuse.
- 10:05Speaker 14: Said he hit her head into the ground and choked
- 10:11Speaker 14: her at one point.
- 10:13Speaker 1: But that's not all the dirt on Katrina's secret boyfriend.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Detectives retrieved text messages from her recently recovered cell phone,
- 10:21Speaker 1: and it's a powder keg of intel. On the night
- 10:24Speaker 1: Katrina goes missing, her secret lover God Gabriel sends her
- 10:28Speaker 1: a barrage of text messages.
- 10:29Speaker 8: There's something else going on here than just a missing person.
- 10:33Speaker 1: One of the texts to Katrina says what's wrong, and
- 10:36Speaker 1: yet another that reads have you told him you want
- 10:38Speaker 1: a divorce? That there's nothing left in you for him? Nothing.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Then the texts, which continue late into the night, appear
- 10:46Speaker 1: to take on in an aggressive tone when guy writes
- 10:49Speaker 1: he wants this his way, well newslash, he has no say.
- 10:53Speaker 2: All the while, we were all suspicious.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Then more explosive evidence and the missing woman's coworkers confirmed
- 11:01Speaker 1: to police that Katrina thought she was being stalked in
- 11:04Speaker 1: the weeks leading up to her disappearance.
- 11:07Speaker 2: She also shared that information with her cellular phone company.
- 11:10Speaker 3: She knew that somebody was following and watching her.
- 11:14Speaker 1: And that scared her. A text to her stepfather, just
- 11:17Speaker 1: four days before she vanished, revealed Katrina feared for her life.
- 11:23Speaker 1: In the text, she writes, do I have to have
- 11:25Speaker 1: my FOID card first before going to the shooting range?
- 11:28Speaker 1: FOYD is an acronym for firearm Owner Identification card. According
- 11:33Speaker 1: to her stepdad, Katrina wanted a gun for protection.
- 11:36Speaker 2: She did everything that she thought she could to protect herself.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Sadly, it may not have been enough. Katrina's coworkers share
- 11:44Speaker 1: a disturbing incident with police that occurred just two weeks
- 11:47Speaker 1: before Katrina went missing.
- 11:49Speaker 2: An individual drove through her work parking lot in disguise
- 11:53Speaker 2: and distributed several flyers.
- 11:57Speaker 1: That flyer was to expose her secret boyfriend and gone.
- 12:00Speaker 1: It was entitled guy expletive cat, which stated, in part
- 12:04Speaker 1: he was able to exploitive Katrina from HR in record
- 12:08Speaker 1: time and goes on to paint Katrina as a cheater. Yeah,
- 12:12Speaker 1: she's married with a family, but when I turned on
- 12:14Speaker 1: the charm, her legs fell open. But who is the
- 12:17Speaker 1: mystery man behind the X rated flyers?
- 12:20Speaker 2: He secretly followed her. We believe that he dumped flyers
- 12:25Speaker 2: at her workplace, so she was constantly being stalked by
- 12:27Speaker 2: this individual.
- 12:30Speaker 1: In Katrina's secret love affair. It's not so secret anymore,
- 12:34Speaker 1: and she had.
- 12:34Speaker 2: No idea that he was capable of these.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Things coming up. There's yet another suspect.
- 12:40Speaker 8: The amount of lies in de seat with him is amazing.
- 12:44Speaker 1: And Katrina was hiding another dark secret.
- 12:47Speaker 9: She really kept this out to herself.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Katrina and Todd Smith were married on paper, but in
- 12:54Speaker 1: real life they were done, and that split would remain
- 12:57Speaker 1: a secret from just about everyone until Katrina.
- 13:01Speaker 6: Mysteriously fell off the face of the earth.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Thirty year old Katrina Smith has been missing for two weeks.
- 13:08Speaker 1: I miss so much. Cops discovered the wife and stepmother
- 13:12Speaker 1: had a secret life and a secret lover, the ultimate
- 13:16Speaker 1: betrayal and constant terror.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Someone was tracking her.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Detectives interview Katrina's lover and coworker, Guy Gabriel. He claims
- 13:25Speaker 1: he was working the night Katrina went missing.
- 13:28Speaker 8: He was a very cooperative with the investigation.
- 13:31Speaker 1: While investigators check out guys alibi, they turned their attention
- 13:35Speaker 1: to a person no one first suspected, Katrina's husband, Todd Smith,
- 13:40Speaker 1: who's been on TV every day since her disappearance, begging
- 13:43Speaker 1: for his wife's safe return.
- 13:46Speaker 13: And thank everybody for all your efforts for coming up tonight.
- 13:52Speaker 3: He gave the tears, but I think the majority of
- 13:57Speaker 3: the public looked at him in real life is something's
- 14:01Speaker 3: just not right.
- 14:02Speaker 1: But odd behavior doesn't equal guilt. So would a big
- 14:05Speaker 1: old detective start digging? They wonder is Tod Smith really
- 14:10Speaker 1: a grieving husband or a killer crying crocodile tears.
- 14:14Speaker 8: Todd Smith, That's debatable. It's defensive. Who you talk.
- 14:18Speaker 12: To family friends, you might get different opinions.
- 14:22Speaker 1: It turns out Katrina isn't the only one who's been
- 14:24Speaker 1: keeping secrets. Todd, a forty four year old insurance and
- 14:28Speaker 1: investment broker, is hardly the money man he claims to
- 14:31Speaker 1: be around town.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Who is being sued in federal court by investors.
- 14:36Speaker 1: As seen in these court documents, Todd and his business
- 14:38Speaker 1: partners are accused of bilking clients out of nine hundred
- 14:41Speaker 1: and eighty three thousand dollars. In addition, he's indicted on
- 14:45Speaker 1: seven counts of mail fraud and ten counts of wire
- 14:48Speaker 1: fraud in connection with the alleged charge it. Todd leads
- 14:51Speaker 1: not guilty.
- 14:52Speaker 2: But no one knew that other than herself. That was
- 14:55Speaker 2: something that was not shared with family members. Everyone thought
- 14:58Speaker 2: that he made money, that he was the breadwinner.
- 15:02Speaker 1: In reality, Katrina supports Todd and his three daughters. It's
- 15:06Speaker 1: a shift in traditional gender roles and a strain on
- 15:09Speaker 1: the marriage.
- 15:09Speaker 3: And that's quite apparent that he was losing control and
- 15:14Speaker 3: losing his wife.
- 15:15Speaker 2: She realized that she needed to end the marriage, but.
- 15:19Speaker 1: You never know it. According to Todd's statements to detectives.
- 15:22Speaker 7: He stated that his relationship with Katrina was good, that
- 15:26Speaker 7: Katrina was just staying at a friend's house while she
- 15:28Speaker 7: was house sitting.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Not exactly.
- 15:31Speaker 2: She had moved out of the marital home approximately two
- 15:34Speaker 2: and a half weeks prior, and.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Todd is desperate to get her back. And how do
- 15:38Speaker 1: cops know this?
- 15:39Speaker 7: There was a card that was recovered from Katrina's vehicle.
- 15:44Speaker 7: He's begging for her not to leave him.
- 15:47Speaker 1: In the handwritten card, Todd writes, in part, I am
- 15:50Speaker 1: scared to death that you are going to start talking
- 15:53Speaker 1: to someone who will take advantage of the situation, and
- 15:55Speaker 1: he goes on to say I will do whatever it takes.
- 15:58Speaker 1: He ends the note with this sentiment, I want to
- 16:01Speaker 1: grow old with you. I love you and cherish you.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Katrina love Todd. And while the card appears to be
- 16:07Speaker 1: a love letter. Marilyn Hyde Ross with the Winnebago State's
- 16:10Speaker 1: Attorney's Office reads something entirely different.
- 16:14Speaker 2: It had subtle hints love you to death. You know,
- 16:18Speaker 2: can't live without you. I'll do anything, But reading between
- 16:22Speaker 2: the lines, it was a subtle threat.
- 16:25Speaker 1: And recovered text between Katrina and her secret lover Guy
- 16:29Speaker 1: reveals something happened between mister and missus Smith the night
- 16:32Speaker 1: she vanished. Gye texts, it will be over before you
- 16:35Speaker 1: know it, and then the healing begins. Then he writes,
- 16:38Speaker 1: it's your house. You either sell or He goes and continues,
- 16:43Speaker 1: did you tell him too little? Too late? Tell him
- 16:47Speaker 1: what to take? This wonder? Then they get news that
- 16:50Speaker 1: Katrina's purse has been found.
- 16:52Speaker 2: She had notes that were recovered regarding appointments with a
- 16:55Speaker 2: divorce attorney, and they were in her purse to.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Start piecing together. The night Katrina disappear, she went over
- 17:03Speaker 1: to do laundry and air some dirty laundry of her own,
- 17:06Speaker 1: asking Todd for a divorce. Authorities now believe the last
- 17:10Speaker 1: person who saw her alive was her husband, a man
- 17:13Speaker 1: she thought she knew, but as it turns out, he
- 17:16Speaker 1: was keeping some giant secrets of his own. Katrina didn't
- 17:19Speaker 1: even know her husband's real name.
- 17:22Speaker 9: He changed his name.
- 17:24Speaker 1: That's right, Tom Smith isn't even Tod Smith. His real
- 17:28Speaker 1: name is Todd Rapprager.
- 17:30Speaker 9: Pieces of information about his past that we didn't know.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Todd Rappracher changed his name to Todd Smith after being
- 17:36Speaker 1: convicted of arson as a teenager.
- 17:39Speaker 11: He had previously been arrested when he was seventeen for
- 17:43Speaker 11: trying to burn his family's house down while his family
- 17:45Speaker 11: members were in it.
- 17:47Speaker 1: He was sentenced to thirty months probation and required to
- 17:49Speaker 1: get a voluntary drug evaluation, something his wife's family says.
- 17:54Speaker 2: Katrina never knew he's a chameleon. He had two faces.
- 17:58Speaker 2: She had no idea that he was capable of these things.
- 18:02Speaker 1: What else is Todd Smith hiding? The Winnebago Sheriff's Department
- 18:06Speaker 1: wants to find out. They obtain a subpoena for Todd
- 18:08Speaker 1: in a warrant to search his home. He sees several items,
- 18:12Speaker 1: including his computer.
- 18:14Speaker 12: That was a gut instinct. It's almost like getting hit
- 18:17Speaker 12: in the stomach coming up.
- 18:19Speaker 7: He deleted and cleared his computer.
- 18:21Speaker 1: But detectives are determined to find the truth.
- 18:23Speaker 3: We will in fact see justice.
- 18:26Speaker 1: And it may be stranger than fiction.
- 18:28Speaker 2: She trusted the wrong person.
- 18:32Speaker 1: For weeks, Katrina Smith has been missing. Her husband would
- 18:35Speaker 1: make an emotional plea for her to come home on TV,
- 18:39Speaker 1: but some, including the police, were now wondering if those
- 18:42Speaker 1: tears were all an act. It's been seventeen days since
- 18:47Speaker 1: anyone has heard from the missing Illinois woman. Winnebago detectives
- 18:52Speaker 1: have their hands full chasing leads and potential suspects.
- 18:55Speaker 8: We had many, many calls come in. We followed up
- 18:58Speaker 8: on many leads.
- 19:00Speaker 12: There was an exhaustive investigation done on other people that
- 19:06Speaker 12: it could have.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Been, including the peeping tom arrested in Katrina's neighborhood.
- 19:12Speaker 8: He was cleared.
- 19:13Speaker 1: And what about Katrina's secret lover, Guy Gabriel.
- 19:16Speaker 8: There was some issues with him.
- 19:18Speaker 12: He's involved in a domestic issue with his wife, but
- 19:21Speaker 12: we don't feel that any involvement in this incident at all.
- 19:25Speaker 1: After uncovering secrets in the Smith marriage and Todd's dark
- 19:28Speaker 1: double life.
- 19:30Speaker 2: We were all suspicious that he was in fact the perpetrator.
- 19:35Speaker 1: While they wait for forensic results on item sees from
- 19:38Speaker 1: Todd's home, detectives are struck by the frequency of Todd's
- 19:42Speaker 1: news interviews every day for seventeen straight days, The seemingly
- 19:46Speaker 1: grieving husband has made emotional please through the press.
- 19:50Speaker 3: They did give him the airtime, and they continue to
- 19:52Speaker 3: present him as the grieving husband.
- 19:54Speaker 13: It's overwhelming, the outreach, the love and the support of everyone.
- 19:59Speaker 13: I'm deeply grateful, and I know Katrina would appreciate it.
- 20:06Speaker 1: There's just one problem.
- 20:08Speaker 3: I don't think he was that convincing.
- 20:10Speaker 1: And it's not just what Todd is saying is what
- 20:13Speaker 1: he's doing or in this case, not doing.
- 20:16Speaker 2: He would be in the search parties with strangers who
- 20:19Speaker 2: were diligently searching for her, and he really was not interested.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Katrina's family witnessed it firsthand.
- 20:27Speaker 11: We were all desperate to find her, do anything we
- 20:30Speaker 11: could to bring her home, and he was kind of
- 20:32Speaker 11: just a bystander.
- 20:34Speaker 1: Bystander reaving husband or killer. Authorities can't be sure and
- 20:38Speaker 1: subpoena the news footage from local stations as potential evidence. Meanwhile,
- 20:43Speaker 1: computer forensic analyst Detective Dave one As is tasked with
- 20:47Speaker 1: reviewing the information recovered from Todd's laptop.
- 20:50Speaker 7: He told me that he had completely deleted everything everything.
- 20:55Speaker 7: With today's technology and computer forensics, we were able to
- 20:59Speaker 7: recover all that, even if the data has been deleted,
- 21:02Speaker 7: we were able to recover that.
- 21:04Speaker 1: And it's a gold mine of jealousy and obsession. On
- 21:08Speaker 1: the laptop, cops recover three folders of interest, one entitled
- 21:12Speaker 1: KS one four one two, which is the date Katrina
- 21:15Speaker 1: allegedly met her secret boyfriend god Gabriel for drinks. And
- 21:20Speaker 1: then a second folder that appears to be related to
- 21:23Speaker 1: that X rated flyer that was distributed at Katrina's workplace.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Through the investigative work of the one nabag Ol'connie Sheriff's
- 21:29Speaker 2: department to find remnants of that flyer that was distributed
- 21:33Speaker 2: on his computer.
- 21:35Speaker 1: Then there's a third folder and it grabs the attention
- 21:38Speaker 1: of detected one as it's entitled super trackstick. But what
- 21:42Speaker 1: in the world is that?
- 21:43Speaker 7: A super track stick is a device or a GPS
- 21:47Speaker 7: device that is used to track a movement of a
- 21:50Speaker 7: person or a vehicle. A satellite signal will track every
- 21:55Speaker 7: movement by capturing GPS coordinates.
- 21:58Speaker 1: And one investigator click on the folder to see what
- 22:01Speaker 1: Ton's tracking. Ends up, it's not what he's tracking, but
- 22:05Speaker 1: who he's tracking.
- 22:07Speaker 7: He was tracking his wife for some time.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Try three years according to the tracking logs, but investigators
- 22:16Speaker 1: need physical proof that Todd has been stalking his wife
- 22:19Speaker 1: and pass on the information to the forensics team processing
- 22:23Speaker 1: her car. And when they check under Katrina's vehicle.
- 22:27Speaker 7: He took it off the car and he.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Forgot one small thing, but a big one for cops.
- 22:33Speaker 7: It's a wire that was located underneath Katrina's vehicle, So
- 22:37Speaker 7: we knew that something had been fixed to that vehicle.
- 22:42Speaker 1: But where is that tracking device now? Then cops got
- 22:46Speaker 1: a huge break.
- 22:47Speaker 7: There was some video that was recovered.
- 22:49Speaker 1: It's home surveillance video from one of Todd and Katrina's neighbor.
- 22:52Speaker 7: Where we see a small statue person walking southbound.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Detectives believe the image is of Todd, but it's grainy
- 23:01Speaker 1: and far away, so it could be anywhere. Then an
- 23:05Speaker 1: explosive moment in the case when the forensics on Katrina's
- 23:09Speaker 1: car come in.
- 23:10Speaker 10: In Katrina's car, we sprayed a chemical which reacts with
- 23:15Speaker 10: blood and when it does, it causes the blood to
- 23:19Speaker 10: luminess or glow.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Blood is everywhere as seen in these CSI photos and
- 23:25Speaker 1: the blood DNA.
- 23:27Speaker 10: Katrina's blood was identified.
- 23:29Speaker 1: But Tod Smith's blood or fingerprints are nowhere to be found.
- 23:33Speaker 1: At this point in the investigation, detectives can prove Todd
- 23:36Speaker 1: stalked his wife, but they can't prove he killed her.
- 23:39Speaker 2: And there was no one else. There were no other suspects.
- 23:42Speaker 8: It was him.
- 23:44Speaker 1: If only investigators had some concrete evidence linking Todd to
- 23:48Speaker 1: the murder of his wife.
- 23:49Speaker 7: We obtain a second search warn for the computer coming up.
- 23:54Speaker 7: That's when I started tracking him.
- 23:55Speaker 1: The perfect murder.
- 23:57Speaker 3: He thought he could outsmart everyone.
- 23:59Speaker 1: But there's one thing. Todd Smith for.
- 24:01Speaker 7: God, that was his biggest mistake.
- 24:05Speaker 1: Now to the conclusion of today's story, the secret stalker
- 24:08Speaker 1: Katrina Smith is missing and presumed dead, and police now
- 24:11Speaker 1: believe the man she married has been acting more like
- 24:14Speaker 1: a stalker than a husband.
- 24:16Speaker 6: But the big question was he a killer?
- 24:19Speaker 1: The authorities believe Tod Smith stalked and murdered his wife Katrina.
- 24:24Speaker 10: I've never felt that somebody was so guilty of a
- 24:28Speaker 10: crime as I did in this.
- 24:30Speaker 1: The uncovered suspicious GPS software on his computer. Now they
- 24:34Speaker 1: just need to find direct evidence linking.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Him to the murder, and we knew that it was ten.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Detectives learn about updated tracking software, and they get a
- 24:43Speaker 1: second search warrant for Tod's.
- 24:45Speaker 7: Computer to see if we can recover any additional information
- 24:50Speaker 7: or evidence that could you know, show us more of
- 24:53Speaker 7: that tracking information.
- 24:55Speaker 1: It's a success and a game changer for the prosecution's case.
- 25:00Speaker 7: We were able to pinpoint exactly where that tracking had
- 25:04Speaker 7: been tracking.
- 25:05Speaker 1: This time, the high tech software allows investigators to see
- 25:09Speaker 1: a new detail.
- 25:10Speaker 7: The tracking device shows them shows hundreds of pings, which
- 25:15Speaker 7: is consistent of somebody walking.
- 25:18Speaker 1: That's right on the night Katrina goes missing. Tom's GPS
- 25:21Speaker 1: device appears to move from Katrina's vehicle to a person's body,
- 25:25Speaker 1: and the coordinates show this mystery man is on the.
- 25:28Speaker 7: Move, somebody leaving the vehicle, removing the tracking device from
- 25:33Speaker 7: her vehicle, and then walking back to Tot Smith's residence.
- 25:39Speaker 1: Then detectives get a hunch and take another look at
- 25:42Speaker 1: that home surveillance video recovered from one of the Smith's neighbors,
- 25:45Speaker 1: and when they compare the GPS movements to the video,
- 25:49Speaker 1: get this It's an exact frame for frame match.
- 25:53Speaker 7: The pings show as he's walking on the sidewalk, it
- 25:56Speaker 7: shows when he's walking on the fields as he's crossing
- 25:59Speaker 7: over through.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Detectives believe the video captures Tod Smith on his way
- 26:04Speaker 1: home after he killed his wife. But why is the
- 26:07Speaker 1: tracking device tracking Todd?
- 26:09Speaker 7: He took it off the car and at that time
- 26:12Speaker 7: we believe that at that time he thought he was
- 26:16Speaker 7: turning it off and he turned it on instead, and
- 26:20Speaker 7: that's when it started tracking him.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Yes, Todd's perfect murder is being perfectly recorded, but he
- 26:27Speaker 1: almost got away with it except for one final action.
- 26:31Speaker 1: After murdering his wife.
- 26:32Speaker 7: The biggest mistake that night, he plugged in that tracking
- 26:35Speaker 7: device and it grabbed all the coordinates.
- 26:38Speaker 1: But before prosecutors can charge Todd with murder, they need
- 26:42Speaker 1: more direct evidence.
- 26:44Speaker 2: Proof that she was in fact murdered.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Then a grave discovery. A fireman is fishing on Illinois
- 26:51Speaker 1: Rock River and notices something caught on a log near
- 26:54Speaker 1: the river's edge.
- 26:56Speaker 8: Curiosity got the best of them, so he bolted over
- 26:59Speaker 8: to see what it was.
- 27:01Speaker 1: It's the body of a woman.
- 27:03Speaker 2: It was very decomposed. In order to identify her, the
- 27:08Speaker 2: investigators had to contact and look at dental records so
- 27:12Speaker 2: that we could actually identify her.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Tragically, it's Katrina Smith.
- 27:18Speaker 11: Was very devastating to even hear that she it was final.
- 27:24Speaker 11: Then you know it wasn't that she was missing and
- 27:25Speaker 11: we could bring her home alive, that she was gone.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Four days later, the autopsy results are in and the
- 27:32Speaker 1: corner makes a ruling.
- 27:33Speaker 7: Homicide and the manner of death blunt force trauma.
- 27:39Speaker 10: It was intensely brutal well, she was beaten over the
- 27:43Speaker 10: head and body and then thrown into a river.
- 27:46Speaker 1: But how was Katrina killed? Investigators still don't have a
- 27:50Speaker 1: murder weapon or do that. That's when they hear a
- 27:53Speaker 1: disturbing story from Todd's own children.
- 27:56Speaker 3: The defendant was there with his daughters and a friend
- 27:59Speaker 3: to collect items from the house. The defendant ordered another
- 28:03Speaker 3: friend to go collect the bat.
- 28:06Speaker 1: As in a Louisville Slugger aluminum baseball bat.
- 28:09Speaker 3: He was taken back in surprise and very upset that
- 28:12Speaker 3: the bat was missing from the garage and where was it?
- 28:15Speaker 3: The bat was already in our custody.
- 28:17Speaker 1: And only Crime Watch Daily gets invited into the evidence
- 28:20Speaker 1: room for a look at the alleged murder weapon.
- 28:24Speaker 7: The bat was actually against the wall in the corner
- 28:26Speaker 7: of the garage, leaning like this, and there was blood
- 28:32Speaker 7: on this side. It was completely consumed he was very
- 28:35Speaker 7: concerned that the police had the bat.
- 28:37Speaker 1: And when the blood DNA is tested.
- 28:40Speaker 10: Katrina's blood was identified on the baseball bat.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Now, with the alleged murder weapon, Katrina's body, forensics from
- 28:48Speaker 1: the computer and video surveillance, the Winnebago County DA's office
- 28:52Speaker 1: makes it official.
- 28:54Speaker 12: He's charged with the murder aggravated by aggravated domestic battery,
- 28:59Speaker 12: and concealment of a homicide.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Todd enters his please Our affiliate WTVO is in the
- 29:09Speaker 1: courtroom as Winnebago Sheriff's detective John Berg takes the stand.
- 29:14Speaker 1: He recalls the defendant's odd behavior during their initial interview.
- 29:18Speaker 8: He was rubbing with both hands at the side of
- 29:20Speaker 8: his head. He was looking down in kind of an
- 29:23Speaker 8: emotion like this.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Then, upon taking the stand, Katrina's secret lover God Gabriel
- 29:28Speaker 1: testifies about the text messages he exchanged with Katrina on
- 29:32Speaker 1: that fateful night.
- 29:33Speaker 15: I just says she was frustrated that he was grasping
- 29:35Speaker 15: his fraws and trying to.
- 29:38Speaker 8: Trying to talk her into.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Stan And when it came to Katrina asking Todd for
- 29:42Speaker 1: a divorce.
- 29:43Speaker 10: What she had told me about her apprehension to share,
- 29:47Speaker 10: and the reasons she wouldn't share was because she was
- 29:49Speaker 10: afraid of his reaction.
- 29:50Speaker 1: Then prosecutors enter into evidence those infamous news interviews.
- 29:55Speaker 13: It's been horrible.
- 30:00Speaker 2: To come home.
- 30:01Speaker 12: A man who murdered his wife and took part in
- 30:04Speaker 12: searches with the community, did multiple interviews with the news media.
- 30:12Speaker 8: The amount of lies and deceit with him is amazing.
- 30:18Speaker 1: The defense claims there's no direct evidence tying Todd to
- 30:22Speaker 1: the crime. Tod Smith's fingerprints and his DNA were not
- 30:25Speaker 1: found on the bat or other evidence, and there was
- 30:28Speaker 1: no eyewitness to the alleged murder.
- 30:31Speaker 10: The forensic evidence that linked Todd to the crime was
- 30:34Speaker 10: more so digital.
- 30:37Speaker 1: But the defense appears to be grasping at straws, claiming
- 30:40Speaker 1: Katrina's secret lover, God Gabriel is the real killer, telling
- 30:44Speaker 1: the jury Gabriel's alleged domestic abuse record is enough reasonable
- 30:48Speaker 1: doubt to warrant a not guilty verdict for their client.
- 30:51Speaker 1: But there's a big hole in that story. God Gabriel's
- 30:55Speaker 1: alibi is rock solid.
- 30:57Speaker 8: So it was determined that he was at work the
- 30:59Speaker 8: night of the end.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Leaving as the only suspect. The man who's been in
- 31:03Speaker 1: plain sight the entire time on the local.
- 31:06Speaker 8: News, Katrina was murdered by Todd Smith.
- 31:09Speaker 1: And in closing arguments, the prosecutor literally comes out swinging, Tommy, she's.
- 31:17Speaker 3: Down, she can herself miss hit. Ross took the bat
- 31:22Speaker 3: and sliftly graphically showed the jurors how many times he
- 31:28Speaker 3: had to swing the bat to do the injuries and
- 31:30Speaker 3: the damage that was done to Katrina.
- 31:33Speaker 1: After three weeks of testimony, a jury of ten men
- 31:36Speaker 1: and two women reaches a verdicts Bility, your first three murdered.
- 31:44Speaker 1: Katrina's broken hearted mother rejoices through the pain.
- 31:47Speaker 2: We are so grateful to the verdict today. We finally
- 31:52Speaker 2: have justice for my daughter Katrina.
- 31:55Speaker 1: Todd Smith is sentenced to fifty nine years behind bars,
- 31:58Speaker 1: which is a life sentence for the now fifty year old.
- 32:01Speaker 1: He plans to appeal the verdict, still clinging to his innocence,
- 32:05Speaker 1: reading a verse from the Bible in open court, So fine.
- 32:10Speaker 13: A why and a employ Although I I faily.
- 32:18Speaker 15: Asked to see or see her.
- 32:22Speaker 1: But while todd sits in prison, Katrina's family looks forward
- 32:26Speaker 1: to the future.
- 32:27Speaker 11: We want to just be able to move forward and
- 32:30Speaker 11: just always remember Katrina and just celebrate the person that
- 32:33Speaker 11: she was. Katrina was a beautiful person inside and now,
- 32:37Speaker 11: and she really made the world a better place just
- 32:40Speaker 11: by being in it.
- 32:43Speaker 1: To talk about the case and what could happen next,
- 32:45Speaker 1: we brought in Crime Watch Daily legal.
- 32:47Speaker 6: Analyst Jesse Webber.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Jesse, thanks for being here, Thank you for having man.
- 32:50Speaker 1: Smith got fifty five years for the murder, four years
- 32:53Speaker 1: for concealment of a homicide.
- 32:54Speaker 6: He faced life.
- 32:56Speaker 15: Explain that, well, that is basically a life sentence because
- 32:59Speaker 15: he is forty nine years old, and the judge said
- 33:01Speaker 15: he will serve that one hundred percent, which means he
- 33:03Speaker 15: won't get out even for good behavior.
- 33:05Speaker 1: There were a few unanswered questions raised by the defense.
- 33:09Speaker 1: For instance, whose fingerprints were on the bat?
- 33:12Speaker 6: Can that help in an appeal in her That's.
- 33:14Speaker 1: A great question.
- 33:15Speaker 15: The most important thing that they're going to try and
- 33:16Speaker 15: say is that the weight of the evidence was not
- 33:18Speaker 15: substantial enough to support the conviction because a his fingerprints
- 33:22Speaker 15: weren't found on the bat, the fibers that were found
- 33:24Speaker 15: on the bloody paper towels were not the same fibers
- 33:27Speaker 15: in his apartment. There were unidentified fingerprints in Katrina's car.
- 33:31Speaker 15: There was no direct eye witnesses, So they're going to
- 33:33Speaker 15: say there just wasn't enough. The evidence is insubstantial and
- 33:36Speaker 15: flimsy to support this conviction.
- 33:37Speaker 1: What do you think the chances are that he gets
- 33:40Speaker 1: a new trial.
- 33:40Speaker 6: It is an uphill burden for them. It is an
- 33:42Speaker 6: uphill battle.
- 33:43Speaker 15: So the chances that they will be successful are unlikely
- 33:47Speaker 15: because the forensic evidence in terms of fingerprints was kind
- 33:49Speaker 15: of flimsy. There were no direct eye witnesses. But when
- 33:52Speaker 15: you look at the history on his computer, he had searched.
- 33:55Speaker 15: He had a searchestory about bridges and she had been
- 33:57Speaker 15: found there, and then the history with the GPS, it's
- 34:01Speaker 15: coming together.
- 34:01Speaker 6: Legal analyst Jesse Webber, thank you very much.
- 34:03Speaker 1: As always, if you want more on this story, we'll
- 34:05Speaker 1: continue to follow it on our website, crimewatch Daily dot com.
- 34:11Speaker 1: Up next, a mother of two survives the unthinkable nine
- 34:15Speaker 1: gunshots to the body.
- 34:17Speaker 4: I said to myself, Wow, listen, it is I'm dying.
- 34:22Speaker 4: I'm gonna die.
- 34:23Speaker 1: The chilling attack caught on surveillance video. Who was the
- 34:27Speaker 1: man in disguise? You wanted her dead? Coming up now
- 34:33Speaker 1: to an incredible survivor story. A woman shot not once,
- 34:36Speaker 1: but nine Times. Today, she's reliving the horrible incident that
- 34:40Speaker 1: played out on a store surveillance camera. We're teaming up
- 34:43Speaker 1: with our local affiliate ktv I for the very latest.
- 34:46Speaker 1: Here's regrincel.
- 34:49Speaker 16: A dramatic scene unfolds on camera at the entrance to
- 34:52Speaker 16: a supermarket. Kat Hudson, scene standing, suddenly collapses to the ground,
- 34:58Speaker 16: her body riddled with bullets.
- 35:01Speaker 4: I said to myself, Wow, what is it.
- 35:05Speaker 2: I'm done.
- 35:06Speaker 4: I'm gonna die.
- 35:08Speaker 16: If he couldn't have her, then no one else would.
- 35:11Speaker 4: There's no reason I should be alive right now. Heavy
- 35:14Speaker 4: bullet was something that could have been serious.
- 35:17Speaker 16: Like prey. She has been hunted down and shot by
- 35:21Speaker 16: the man she once loved. It was an early morning
- 35:26Speaker 16: in March. Kat Hudson pulled into the store parking lot
- 35:29Speaker 16: where she works, but before the mother of two could
- 35:32Speaker 16: get inside, he.
- 35:35Speaker 4: Was there and this big, musty, massive guy who's bald,
- 35:39Speaker 4: and he had a long black wig.
- 35:42Speaker 16: Gone under the wig her estranged husband, Michael Hudson. Kat
- 35:49Speaker 16: says her husband changed after they were married, becoming possessive
- 35:54Speaker 16: and abusive. He trashed their house and destroyed almost everything
- 35:59Speaker 16: she had. She finally left, headed to Saint Louis, where
- 36:03Speaker 16: she got a new phone number, new home, and a
- 36:05Speaker 16: new job. She thought he didn't know her location, but
- 36:09Speaker 16: now he'd found her disguised and carrying a gun. Michael
- 36:15Speaker 16: tried forcing Cat into his van. When a coworker heard
- 36:18Speaker 16: the commotion ran out to help. Michael opened fire.
- 36:25Speaker 4: I remember that first hit because it made my arm
- 36:27Speaker 4: feel like it feels now, just complete utter numbness and
- 36:31Speaker 4: dead and weight.
- 36:34Speaker 16: And he wasn't done yet, far from it.
- 36:37Speaker 4: And I remember the stomach shots and holding my stomach
- 36:41Speaker 4: and there was a.
- 36:42Speaker 2: Ton of blood.
- 36:45Speaker 16: Shockingly, Cat was shot nine times. Her survival a miracle.
- 36:51Speaker 4: I definitely have shots under my arm and my grind
- 36:55Speaker 4: and my belly and artery was hit both here am I.
- 37:00Speaker 16: Growing Surveillance video obtained by our Saint Louis affiliate KTVI
- 37:05Speaker 16: shows Cat as she reaches the store's entrance, already shot.
- 37:10Speaker 16: What you can't hear is what she wanted everyone to know.
- 37:13Speaker 4: And I said, this was my husband, Michael Hudson. Make
- 37:16Speaker 4: sure he goes to jail.
- 37:18Speaker 16: About a minute later, she collapsed. Lucky for Kat, a
- 37:22Speaker 16: police officer across the street heard the gunfire and was
- 37:25Speaker 16: at her side within minutes.
- 37:28Speaker 2: There was a lot of blood.
- 37:29Speaker 5: You have to try and find where it's coming from.
- 37:33Speaker 16: One of the bullets had severed the artery in her shoulder.
- 37:36Speaker 16: Police officers used a blood clotting powder to save her life.
- 37:40Speaker 5: I just went to work trying to flip her over,
- 37:43Speaker 5: find where she was bleeding from, and get the quick
- 37:46Speaker 5: clot on it as fast as possible.
- 37:49Speaker 16: Paramedics rushed Cat to the hospital, where she spent days
- 37:52Speaker 16: in a medically induced coma. When she woke up, her
- 37:56Speaker 16: only concern was her two kids.
- 37:58Speaker 4: I was petrified, but he was going to go for them.
- 38:02Speaker 1: But he didn't.
- 38:03Speaker 16: Police say Michael Hudson took his own life. The crazed
- 38:07Speaker 16: gunman found dead in his vehicle about two hours after
- 38:11Speaker 16: ambushing his wife.
- 38:12Speaker 4: What was your reaction when you heard that he had
- 38:16Speaker 4: committed suicide? Well, as non Christian ath, it sounds, I
- 38:23Speaker 4: was relieved.
- 38:26Speaker 16: A restraining order had done little to keep Michael Hudson away.
- 38:29Speaker 16: Kat says Michael violated it several times but was never arrested.
- 38:34Speaker 4: It's not a perfect system at all. I mean, that's
- 38:38Speaker 4: going to be my life goal is to make changes.
- 38:41Speaker 16: For now, she's focused on getting better. The gunshots destroyed
- 38:45Speaker 16: the nerves in her arm and hand, and she'll need
- 38:48Speaker 16: lots of rehab to get movement back.
- 38:50Speaker 4: I still have a couple of bullets have I think
- 38:52Speaker 4: a bullet still in my chest and one and either
- 38:55Speaker 4: my belly or my groin.
- 38:58Speaker 16: Despite that, Cat has been tough by the outpouring of
- 39:01Speaker 16: support from total strangers. A local dealership gave her a
- 39:05Speaker 16: car so she could get back and forth to her
- 39:07Speaker 16: doctor's appointments.
- 39:08Speaker 2: I just want to give her a big hug, and when.
- 39:11Speaker 16: She is better, the officer who was first at her
- 39:13Speaker 16: side hopes they can meet again.
- 39:16Speaker 5: I'm just so happy she survived it. You know, it's
- 39:20Speaker 5: it's a miracle. Everything aligned right.
- 39:22Speaker 16: And Kat Hudson agrees it is a miracle.
- 39:26Speaker 2: Your loss a miracle.
