- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio The Bible Study Podcast, Episode nine fifty nine. Today,
- 0:08Speaker 1: The Bible Study Podcast continues the study of the Gospel
- 0:11Speaker 1: of Luke as we finish up chapter twenty two. Welcome
- 0:23Speaker 1: to the Bible Study Podcast. I'm your host, Chris Christensen.
- 0:26Speaker 1: I hope I'm not getting too ahead of myself that
- 0:28Speaker 1: I say we're going to finish up chapter twenty two today,
- 0:31Speaker 1: but we're going to finish up Monday Thursday and start
- 0:33Speaker 1: getting into good Friday. But first a word from this sponsor.
- 0:38Speaker 1: So we left off with the last Supper, so we're
- 0:40Speaker 1: going to pick this up. In verse thirty nine, Jesus
- 0:43Speaker 1: prays on the Mount of Olives. Jesus went out as
- 0:46Speaker 1: usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him.
- 0:50Speaker 1: On reaching the place, he said to them, pray that
- 0:52Speaker 1: you will not fall into temptation. He withdrew about a
- 0:56Speaker 1: stone's throw behind them, knelt down and prayed, Father, if
- 0:59Speaker 1: you were willing take this cup from me, yet not
- 1:03Speaker 1: my will, but yours be done. An angel from heaven
- 1:06Speaker 1: appeared to him and strengthened him, and, being in anguish,
- 1:09Speaker 1: he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops
- 1:12Speaker 1: of blood. Falling to the ground. But he rose from
- 1:16Speaker 1: prayer and went back to the disciples. He found them asleep,
- 1:19Speaker 1: exhausted from sorrow. Why are you sleeping? He asked them,
- 1:23Speaker 1: get up and pray so that you will not fall
- 1:25Speaker 1: into temptation. And so this is one of those very
- 1:30Speaker 1: famous stories from Luke from this particular week here where
- 1:36Speaker 1: Jesus is about to face the cross. And we'd say
- 1:40Speaker 1: that Jesus is fully God and fully man, and fully God.
- 1:45Speaker 1: He knows that he will defeat death, but fully ban
- 1:48Speaker 1: he knows that going through it is going to be agony.
- 1:50Speaker 1: It's going to be a particular type of agony. The
- 1:53Speaker 1: Romans used crucifixion because it was cruel and it was torture.
- 1:58Speaker 1: As he is looking for it in time to that,
- 2:01Speaker 1: he is certainly not looking forward to that, And so
- 2:04Speaker 1: he asks God, is there some other way if you
- 2:10Speaker 1: are willing take this cup from me? Otherwise not my will,
- 2:13Speaker 1: but yours be done. If there's any other way we
- 2:16Speaker 1: can do this, if there's any other way we can
- 2:18Speaker 1: get to what we're trying to do to restore the
- 2:23Speaker 1: relationship between God and man, let's do that. But there wasn't.
- 2:29Speaker 1: This was the only thing that would solve that, that
- 2:33Speaker 1: would close that rift. And so he says, Father, you're
- 2:39Speaker 1: will be done, and an angel comes and strengthens him.
- 2:42Speaker 1: He will need that strength, and Luke the physician, points
- 2:46Speaker 1: out that as he prays earnestly, he's literally sweating blood.
- 2:52Speaker 1: That's how much stress he is in in this moment.
- 2:57Speaker 1: And of course he's not getting a lot of help
- 2:59Speaker 1: from the disciple, who he finds have fallen asleep. They're exhausted.
- 3:03Speaker 1: It's interesting in Luke's account, they're exhausted from sorrow, which
- 3:08Speaker 1: is interesting. He said, some sorrowful things at the last Supper?
- 3:12Speaker 1: Have they sunk in? Do they have some clue what's
- 3:16Speaker 1: going to happen? So get up and praise that you
- 3:19Speaker 1: may not fall into temptation. Jesus arrested. While he was
- 3:23Speaker 1: still speaking. A crowd came up, and the man who
- 3:26Speaker 1: was called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them.
- 3:29Speaker 1: He approached Jesus to kiss him, but Jesus asked, Judas,
- 3:33Speaker 1: are you betraying the son of Man with a kiss.
- 3:36Speaker 1: When Jesus' followers saw that what was going to happen,
- 3:40Speaker 1: they said, Lord, should we strike with our swords? And
- 3:43Speaker 1: one of them struck the servant of the high priest,
- 3:45Speaker 1: cutting off his right ear. But Jesus answered, no more
- 3:50Speaker 1: of this, and he touched the man's ear and healed him.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of
- 3:57Speaker 1: the temple guard and the elders who had come for him,
- 4:00Speaker 1: am I leading a rebellion? That you have come with
- 4:02Speaker 1: swords and clubs. Every day I was with you in
- 4:05Speaker 1: the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand
- 4:07Speaker 1: on me. But this is your hour when darkness reigns.
- 4:13Speaker 1: And we talk about dark deeds being done in the dark,
- 4:17Speaker 1: and this is one of those where they have been
- 4:20Speaker 1: afraid to arrest Jesus during the day because of fear
- 4:24Speaker 1: of how the crowds will react. They wait until they
- 4:28Speaker 1: can get him alone. And they get him alone with
- 4:31Speaker 1: the help of Judas, Judas who has sold him out
- 4:34Speaker 1: for pieces of silver. Judas comes up and goes to
- 4:40Speaker 1: kiss Jesus. Now this would be a kiss on the cheeks.
- 4:42Speaker 1: It's a very common thing in those days, as it
- 4:45Speaker 1: still is in some other cultures. And Jesus says, will
- 4:49Speaker 1: you betray me with a kiss? And remember Jesus had
- 4:53Speaker 1: just told the disciples the apostles to take swords and
- 4:58Speaker 1: take bags and things. So they got two swords with him,
- 5:01Speaker 1: which we learned at the Last Supper, and so one
- 5:04Speaker 1: of them thinks, oh, we must be supposed to use it,
- 5:07Speaker 1: or maybe a couple of them do, because they say,
- 5:10Speaker 1: should we strike with our swords, and one of them
- 5:12Speaker 1: does before they even get an answer, cutting off the
- 5:15Speaker 1: ear of a servant. And so the last public healing
- 5:19Speaker 1: that Jesus does in scripture is this healing of one
- 5:25Speaker 1: of the people who has come to arrest him, the
- 5:30Speaker 1: servant of the High Priest, and he heals his ear,
- 5:34Speaker 1: restores it, and then allows himself to be arrested. But
- 5:40Speaker 1: now without pointing out to these people that you're doing
- 5:44Speaker 1: these dark deeds in the dark. You're doing this when
- 5:47Speaker 1: darkness reigns. I'm not leading a rebellion. You didn't have
- 5:51Speaker 1: to come with clubs and swords, and you could have
- 5:55Speaker 1: just arrested me in the temple. Continuing on, Peter disowns Jesus,
- 6:02Speaker 1: then seizing him, they led him away and took him
- 6:04Speaker 1: into the house of the High Priest. Peter followed at
- 6:07Speaker 1: a distance when some there had kindled a fire in
- 6:10Speaker 1: the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Peter sat down with them. A servant girl saw him
- 6:16Speaker 1: seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him
- 6:20Speaker 1: and said, this man was with him, but he denied it. Woman,
- 6:23Speaker 1: I don't know him, he said. A little later, someone
- 6:26Speaker 1: else saw him and said, you are also one of them. Man,
- 6:29Speaker 1: I am not, Peter replied. About an hour later, another asserted,
- 6:33Speaker 1: certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Peter replied, man, I don't know what you're talking about.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. The Lord
- 6:44Speaker 1: turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the
- 6:47Speaker 1: word that the Lord had spoken to him before the
- 6:51Speaker 1: rooster crows. Today you will disown me three times, and
- 6:55Speaker 1: he went outside and wept bitterly. Peter is a two
- 7:00Speaker 1: minds here. Peter wants to know what's going to happen
- 7:02Speaker 1: with Jesus, and so he's following on trying to learn this.
- 7:08Speaker 1: But he doesn't want to be arrested. He doesn't want
- 7:11Speaker 1: to go through whatever Jesus is going to go through,
- 7:14Speaker 1: and so he is trying to do it, sneaking in
- 7:18Speaker 1: and pretending like he is not associated with Jesus, and
- 7:23Speaker 1: he has called on it. He's called on it three
- 7:25Speaker 1: times by people who recognize that he's from Galilee. Some
- 7:29Speaker 1: who recognize him apparently and say, this is somebody who
- 7:32Speaker 1: I've seen with Jesus, and Peter denies it. And we
- 7:37Speaker 1: understand why Peter did that. But remember this is the
- 7:41Speaker 1: same Peter who said to Jesus just a few hours
- 7:45Speaker 1: ago that I'm ready to go with you to prison
- 7:49Speaker 1: and to death. It is an easy thing to say,
- 7:55Speaker 1: it is a hard thing to do, and so Peter
- 8:00Speaker 1: falls short of his expectations for himself. Jesus never said
- 8:08Speaker 1: Peter today, you need to be willing to go with
- 8:11Speaker 1: me to prison and death. Now he will eventually follow
- 8:15Speaker 1: Jesus in that fashion. It was Peter who set those expectations.
- 8:20Speaker 1: This is who I am. I am somebody who is
- 8:23Speaker 1: that good a follower that I'm willing to follow you
- 8:26Speaker 1: to prison and to death. But he wasn't, not yet
- 8:31Speaker 1: at least, and he is heartbroken. It is difficult when
- 8:36Speaker 1: we confront ourselves sometimes and we don't live up even
- 8:41Speaker 1: to our own expectations. When we realize we are flawed
- 8:47Speaker 1: and we are broken, but we are. We are not perfect.
- 8:52Speaker 1: We do fall short of what God expects, and I
- 8:55Speaker 1: think more easily fall short sometimes of what we expect
- 8:59Speaker 1: of ourselves. The guards mock Jesus. Then the men guarding
- 9:03Speaker 1: Jesus began mocking and beating him. They blindfolded him and
- 9:07Speaker 1: demanded prophesy, who hit you? And they said many other
- 9:11Speaker 1: insulting things to him. Now, these guards are not the
- 9:16Speaker 1: Roman guards. These would be the guards for the Jewish leaders.
- 9:21Speaker 1: And they are told by the Jewish leaders to go
- 9:23Speaker 1: arrest this man. And they're told by the Jewish leaders
- 9:26Speaker 1: that this man is a false prophet. That's why they're
- 9:29Speaker 1: going to arrest them. And so they're getting with the
- 9:33Speaker 1: program here. They're beating up Jesus because that's the thing
- 9:38Speaker 1: to do, because that is acceptable in the crowd they're in,
- 9:43Speaker 1: because they think that he is in the wrong. It
- 9:47Speaker 1: is interesting to see what people will do in groups
- 9:51Speaker 1: that they wouldn't think about doing on their own, and
- 9:54Speaker 1: how being in a crowd can lower or resistant to
- 9:57Speaker 1: doing the wrong thing. I don't know what these guards
- 10:01Speaker 1: were like normally, but I don't necessarily assume that they
- 10:06Speaker 1: were always bullies and always cruel. But maybe they were
- 10:11Speaker 1: we don't know Jesus before Pilate and Herod. And now
- 10:16Speaker 1: we're finally into Good Friday, into the morning of Good Friday.
- 10:20Speaker 1: At daybreak, the counsel of the elders of the people,
- 10:23Speaker 1: both the chief priests and the teachers of the law,
- 10:25Speaker 1: met together, and Jesus was led before them. If you
- 10:29Speaker 1: are the Messiah, they said, tell us. Jesus answered, if
- 10:32Speaker 1: I tell you, you will not believe me, and if
- 10:35Speaker 1: I ask you, you would not answer. But from now on,
- 10:38Speaker 1: the son of Man will be seated at the right
- 10:40Speaker 1: hand of the Mighty God. They all ask, are you
- 10:43Speaker 1: the son of God? He replied, you say that I am.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Then they said, why do we need any more testimony?
- 10:50Speaker 1: We have heard it from his own lips. Now granted
- 10:57Speaker 1: they haven't actually heard it from his own lips. He said,
- 11:01Speaker 1: you say that I am. But this was never going
- 11:04Speaker 1: to be a fair trial. You don't do a fair
- 11:07Speaker 1: trial in the middle of the night or at daybreak,
- 11:09Speaker 1: or you don't arrest the person. This is not intended
- 11:12Speaker 1: to be a fair trial. This is a kangaroo court.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Jesus was guilty before he walked in, and then they
- 11:18Speaker 1: were just trying to figure out guilty of what. We'll
- 11:23Speaker 1: leave Jesus there and we'll continue on next week with
- 11:28Speaker 1: the rest of Good Friday, including his being before King
- 11:32Speaker 1: Herod and being before Pilot. But with that, we're going
- 11:35Speaker 1: to end this episode of the Bible Study Podcast. If
