- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. I am excited today.
- 0:18We're in Psalm 119 and we are in the tenth section of Psalm 119.
- 0:24That is verses 65 through 72, verses 65 through 72.
- 0:30And in this portion of Scripture, as I've mentioned,
- 0:34Psalm 119, it's all about the Word of God from A-Z, if you
- 0:37will, in the Hebrew alphabet. And so all of these verses start
- 0:40with the Hebrew letter test, and they all talk about the Word of
- 0:43God. And today we are going to be
- 0:47seen in these verses kind of this theme that there is change
- 0:51that is needed. There's change that's needed.
- 0:54And you might be like, Oh yeah, absolutely, Brian.
- 0:58My my spouse needs to change. My coworker or my boss needs to
- 1:02change, my neighbors need to change, you know, their their
- 1:06habits and how late they're partying or they need to change
- 1:11how loud their music is or this nation really needs change.
- 1:15No, my friend, the biggest person in need of change in your
- 1:19life and in my life is me. And you might say, yes, Brian,
- 1:23you do need to change. I need to change too.
- 1:25But each of us individually need to change.
- 1:29We are not yet who God wants us to be fully.
- 1:34We are not showing fully who God is through how we live.
- 1:40That's who we were made to be. We're made to image God that we
- 1:44would be that reflection of the nature of our God towards other
- 1:48people and towards the world world around us.
- 1:51How do we become that? How do we fulfill what God
- 1:56created us to be? And the answer is through
- 1:59looking at the word of God and specifically listening to what
- 2:04it tells us about us. And so that's what we're going
- 2:07to learn in these verses today. Let's start in verse 65.
- 2:11Yahweh, you have treated your servant well, just as you
- 2:15promised. Teach me good judgment and
- 2:18discernment, for I rely on your commands.
- 2:21Before I was afflicted, I went astray, but now I keep your
- 2:26word. You are good and you do what is
- 2:30good. Teach me your statutes.
- 2:33The arrogant have smeared me with lies, but I obey your
- 2:37precepts with all my heart. Their hearts are hard and and
- 2:42sensitive, but I delight in your instruction.
- 2:46It was good for me to be afflicted so that I could learn
- 2:49your statutes. Instruction from your lips is
- 2:54better for me than thousands of gold and silver pieces.
- 3:00I love this section. It is just so.
- 3:03It's so poetic. Some really great word pictures
- 3:07all the way through. And so I'm I'm looking forward
- 3:10to dabbing into this with y'all. OK, we are looking at changing
- 3:16as a result of listening to the word of God, or if you will, the
- 3:19word of God as the teacher who tells us what we should be doing
- 3:24so that we can show others what God is like.
- 3:27I I love him. Verse 65, he says, Yahweh, you
- 3:30have treated your servant well, just as you promised.
- 3:34And this is true for every child of God.
- 3:38People have mistreated me. I have had, I've had teachers
- 3:44that mistreated me. I, I humorously think about my
- 3:48first driving test. I by no means a perfect driver.
- 3:53Ask my wife, ask, you know, my siblings.
- 3:56I'm not a perfect driver, but I have never gotten in an
- 3:59accident. I have never been pulled over,
- 4:04never had, you know, traffic violation thing.
- 4:06And but you would not know that from my initial driving test.
- 4:13The, the guy that gave me that test was just irate and I
- 4:19thought they did pretty good on the test.
- 4:22And he, he flunked to me and then just seemed to have a very
- 4:27sour face while while doing so. The next time that I went in and
- 4:32took the test passed with flying colors.
- 4:34And so I don't know what was up with that guy that particular
- 4:36day, but he, he was not happy with me.
- 4:40Or I can think about my, my English class in college.
- 4:45Actually, it was a second English class that he took
- 4:48because I took English in my local Community College, got
- 4:52phenomenal grades in in in high school, got great grades all the
- 4:57way through. But then when I went to Bible
- 5:00college, the English professor that was there, I think that was
- 5:04the only C that I maybe ever got in.
- 5:08I think that's correct. That was the only C that I ever
- 5:10got in college or in high school or I think in middle school too.
- 5:15And it was just wasn't due to lack of knowledge about English
- 5:20as my other classes indicated. It was just, hey, here's, here's
- 5:25a failing from a teacher. Humans fail us constantly, but
- 5:30God has treated us well. And there was no moment in my
- 5:34life where I can look back and say, God, you did wrong by me.
- 5:39Through this happening. I've had loved ones that have
- 5:42passed. I've had hard circumstances.
- 5:46My wife and I lost a child to to miscarriage back in 2021.
- 5:55I have experienced hard times, but as I've gone through all of
- 5:59those, I can echo here with the psalmist.
- 6:01God, you have treated your servant well.
- 6:03And if there's no other lesson that we can learn, then this
- 6:07lesson, it's verse 68. You are good and you do what is
- 6:11good. You are good and you do what is
- 6:15good. Let's remember when life gets
- 6:18hard that circumstances are difficult.
- 6:21Sin is awful and it destroys everything it comes in contact
- 6:25with. But God is good and he does what
- 6:29is good. So it's not a tribute sin or
- 6:32evil or wrong to God. Let's place that blame where it
- 6:36belongs, on Satan and on his work he wants to accomplish.
- 6:40That's not from our God because he is good and he does what is
- 6:43good. Sorry, that was a little aside.
- 6:45That's not the pain thing I was talking about with the word of
- 6:48God as our teacher, but just felt like the Lord is kind of
- 6:51leading in that way. I have fully forgiven both that
- 6:55driving instructor and my English professor, by the way.
- 6:59Totally fine with them. If I saw them today, I'd, I'd be
- 7:01thrilled to death to see him. No bad blood.
- 7:04I, I just as I was thinking about hey, mistreatment.
- 7:06Oh, yeah, I I remember some people that might have
- 7:09mistreated me in the past. Verse 66, the psalmist says,
- 7:13teach me good judgment and discernment, for I rely on your
- 7:17commands. God.
- 7:18I don't know how to choose between right and wrong here.
- 7:22There's a judgment call, there's a discernment call.
- 7:24I need to know, is this good or is this bad?
- 7:28And my indicators are totally off because sin has muddied my
- 7:33brain to where I think, Oh well, that can be excused.
- 7:37And really this is a good thing, even though God might say that
- 7:41it's a bad thing when you have to make judgment calls, when you
- 7:45have to determine is this a right or a wrong action for me
- 7:48to take? Is this a wrong or right
- 7:50conversation to be having, a wrong or right vocabulary to be
- 7:54using? You can go to the word of God to
- 7:57determine if something is right or wrong.
- 8:00So we need to listen to the word of God in order to figure out
- 8:03what is right and what is wrong. Verse 67, Before I was
- 8:07afflicted, I went astray, but now I keep your word.
- 8:12You want to get back on the right path.
- 8:15Maybe you've been away from the Lord for a while, or maybe
- 8:17you've really been struggling with some sin that it's kind of
- 8:20been ruling over you and you want to stop having sin.
- 8:24Be in charge of your mouth or your behavior or your thoughts.
- 8:30How do you get back on board? Listen to the word of God.
- 8:33It will teach you what you should be doing there.
- 8:36He says before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep your
- 8:40word. I love here.
- 8:41He's going to mention it again at the ending.
- 8:43He says I was going my own way, but then trouble came into my
- 8:47life and I realized this was God's goodness to me that I
- 8:51recognized I had a problem. And so now I have changed
- 8:56according to God's word as a result of the hardship that I
- 9:00went through. And he's going to mention it
- 9:02more later. So I I'll, I'll save some more
- 9:04comments for, for later on. But I think sometimes we resent
- 9:09trials and temptations. We resent when other people
- 9:13'cause us issues, when really it's God showing us.
- 9:18He's showing us our flaws. He's showing us the ways in
- 9:21which we're not like him. Because when someone says that
- 9:25thing, man, we're all up in arms.
- 9:27And when someone doesn't invite us to the party or when someone
- 9:31does says this thing that we're like, oh, I really bet they
- 9:35meant this. Our sin nature creeps on up and
- 9:40God uses those moments to show us, Hey Brian, you really
- 9:45operate in suspicion. Brian, you really operate in
- 9:49unforgiveness or in bitterness. And I'm showing you that this is
- 9:54what you do. And I want to show you a better
- 9:57way through my word. So don't resent the hard times,
- 10:00don't resent the afflictions. God wants to use His word to
- 10:04show you the better way. As a result, verse 68, you are
- 10:09good and you do what is good. Teach me your statutes.
- 10:13God, you are good. That's what your character is,
- 10:16and you do what is good. That is your actions, both your
- 10:19character, what's inside you, and your actions, what you do as
- 10:22a result of what's inside you. They are good and they're
- 10:25consistent. And then he says, teach me your
- 10:28statutes. God, show me how to be good,
- 10:31that my character would be good. And God show me how to do good
- 10:35in my actions. Make me like you.
- 10:39That's what we read in first Peter chapter 1.
- 10:41I think it's about verse 13, Be holy because I am holy.
- 10:46That's what the Lord says. So God, you're good.
- 10:49You do what is good. Help me to be good and do what
- 10:52is good. It's a desire to be like God,
- 10:55that His word would teach us to be like Him.
- 10:59Verse #69 The arrogant have smeared me with lies, but I obey
- 11:04your precepts with all my heart, God, with the the fullest sense
- 11:09of who I am. I'm going to press on following
- 11:12you regardless of what other people say then 70 Their hearts
- 11:18are hard and insensitive. They don't feel that like prick
- 11:23that conscience poking from the Holy Spirit when they are doing
- 11:28what is wrong, it says. But I delight in your
- 11:32instruction. Well, if we don't want to be
- 11:34like the arrogant who have hard and insensitive hearts, what
- 11:39does that mean for us? If I'm in delight in the
- 11:41instruction of God, then what does it mean that my heart is
- 11:43like, It means my heart is soft and it is sensitive that when
- 11:48God goes, shouldn't have, shouldn't have said that we go,
- 11:52oh God, I am so sorry. I'm going to make it right with
- 11:56that person. I'm going to apologize when God
- 11:59says you just passed on by and I told you to talk to that person.
- 12:06Or maybe, you know, you're at church and your natural bent
- 12:10would be I'm just going to avoid this person.
- 12:11God says no, no, no, go, go right to them.
- 12:14Express love, express the care of Jesus.
- 12:18You know, if you need to make something right with them, if
- 12:20you need to be like, hey, you said this and it really kind of
- 12:24hurt my feelings, do that. Be sensitive to the work of the
- 12:28Holy Spirit. Ephesians chapter 4, Paul tells
- 12:31us, do not quench the Holy Spirit of God.
- 12:34It is by him you are sealed until the day of redemption.
- 12:38So don't shut him up. He is with you until you die
- 12:42here, until Jesus comes back. So listen to the Holy Spirit.
- 12:45Don't shut him up. Don't have a hard and
- 12:48insensitive heart that can never be told that you are wrong.
- 12:51Have a sensitive heart that you can always be told when you're
- 12:55wrong. Now does that hurt?
- 12:57Absolutely. I was telling my wife earlier
- 13:00today, The closer that we get with the Holy Spirit, the more
- 13:07we recognize sin both in others and in ourselves.
- 13:13The problem is because we're human, that then results either
- 13:18in pride because we're like, oh man, I'm so much better than
- 13:22they are. Sometimes anger of oh, I can't
- 13:26believe they would sin in this way.
- 13:28Don't they know that that is bad?
- 13:30And so then we fall back into sin even as we recognize sin
- 13:35occurring in others. But then as we recognize our
- 13:39sin, if we're being led by the Spirit, the Spirit shows us
- 13:42that. And so then we grow a little
- 13:45closer to the Lord, but then we recognize more sin.
- 13:47And so this is the struggle that we go through, that even the
- 13:51closer you get to the Lord, you're not going to feel more
- 13:54holy. In fact, if you're actually
- 13:56holy, you are going to be more and more aware of your flaws and
- 14:02failures to be like God, God. And so as a result, our only
- 14:07salvation is Jesus, that we can't ever be holy enough.
- 14:12And so be aware that that sensitivity and that hurt and
- 14:16that process is all going to happen and it's going to happen
- 14:20in your life again and again. What's what's the counterbalance
- 14:24to this delight in the instruction of God that you are
- 14:27happy when someone goes, Hey, Brian, you're kind of a jerk
- 14:30when you said this, that I go, man, thank you.
- 14:34Sin puts the blinders on me that I don't know how I can improve.
- 14:39But when there is instruction from the Lord, when there is
- 14:43instruction from the mouth of his people, when there's
- 14:46instruction even sometimes from the mouth of those that don't
- 14:48know the Lord, but that the Holy Spirit is using them to grow
- 14:52you, that you go, man, yeah, I'm not being like God and how I'm
- 14:55doing that God, thank you. Delight in instruction, delight
- 14:59in in being told that you have done wrong.
- 15:03Don't delight in the wrong. Delight in being told what it
- 15:07is. Listen to it.
- 15:09Because if you don't listen to it, then you are like in James
- 15:13one that the guy looking at a mirror, he sees what he looks
- 15:17like and then he goes away and immediately forgets.
- 15:21And we don't want to do that. We want to be those that
- 15:23continually become more and more like Jesus.
- 15:27Verse 71, It was good for me to be afflicted so that I could
- 15:31learn your statutes. You want to learn, you're going
- 15:34to experience affliction. You're going to experience
- 15:36someone saying something against you.
- 15:38You're going to experience those extra bills, that thing that you
- 15:43didn't see coming. You're going to experience
- 15:45illness and health difficulty. But it is good to be afflicted
- 15:50so that you can learn the statutes of God because in the
- 15:53hard times, in the affliction, your flesh rises up and that
- 15:57shows you where the problem is. It's like when you are purifying
- 16:00gold or silver that you heated up to an incredible heat and all
- 16:04the gold sinks to the bottom and all the imperfections, all the
- 16:07impurities rise to the top and then that stuff can be scraped
- 16:10off. But it's only as the gold is
- 16:13melted and super heated. And so it is in our life that
- 16:16what remains of us is gold. It is purer than before the
- 16:22heat, the trial, the affliction, the sickness, the words from
- 16:25others before that came along. We are now pure as a result.
- 16:31Verse 72, instruction from your lips is better for me than
- 16:35thousands of gold and silver pieces.
- 16:38He says God hearing from you, hearing from the word, hearing
- 16:42from the Holy Spirit, this is far better than all the money
- 16:47that could be used here. I think 30 silver pieces was
- 16:51what Joseph and Jesus were sold for.
- 16:54And so this would be, you know, worth thousands of people.
- 16:59But here the psalmist says your instructions are so much better
- 17:04than any of the money and the gold and all of that.
- 17:08God, you and your ways, your character, your actions are
- 17:13better for me. Let's walk in that.
- 17:16Let's believe that today that God's word and God's way are
- 17:19better, that afflictions can be embraced because it shows us
- 17:23where the problems are so that the Holy Spirit of God can help
- 17:27us to erase those from our life. That we would be more and more
- 17:31like God. We would be like him who is good
- 17:34and who does what is good. Thanks for tuning in.
- 17:37Hope you have a wonderful day.
