- 0:00Let's try this again. The book of Nahim, the
- 0:05introduction. So why read this book?
- 0:09Have you ever been angry? Not just annoyed, but really
- 0:11angry. Perhaps a friend has been
- 0:14cruelly victimized by a bully. Perhaps you've worked for a boss
- 0:18who puts people down to make himself or herself look good.
- 0:21Perhaps you've been the target of racial slurs.
- 0:24Whatever you've been through, the book of Nahum will remind
- 0:27you that God is in control of history and will not allow evil
- 0:32to persist forever. Who wrote the book Nahum?
- 0:37An otherwise unknown prophet whose name means comfort.
- 0:43To whom was it written? Although the book may seem to be
- 0:46addressed to the Assyrians, Nahum's message was actually for
- 0:51God's people, the nation of Judah.
- 0:55When was it written? Between 663 BC when Assyria
- 1:00conquered Egypt, and 612 BC when Nineveh, the capital of Assyria,
- 1:06fell to the Babylonians. Although Nahum's ministry was
- 1:11probably near the end of this period, since he represented the
- 1:15fall of Nineveh as imminent, this was approximately 100 years
- 1:20after Jonah had delivered God's message to Nineveh.
- 1:25I think it's interesting that Nineveh was the capital of
- 1:29Assyria and it fell to the Babylonians.
- 1:33And so I think that's kind of interesting what was happening
- 1:39in the world at this time. Assyria had defeated the
- 1:41northern Kingdom of Israel in 722 BC.
- 1:45Now, approximately 100 years later, the southern Kingdom of
- 1:48Judah was ruled by Manasseh or Josiah, depending on when when
- 1:53Nahem's ministry is dated. How was it or why was it written
- 1:59to assure people that evil does not endure forever and that God
- 2:03will one day fulfill his plan to permanently restore good?
- 2:08What to look for in Nahum? Mercy and judgement, both of
- 2:13which reveal the character of God.
- 2:17Look for for ways these seemingly opposite traits
- 2:21actually reflect God's consistent stance towards his
- 2:26people. So let's start with a prayer
- 2:29before we get into the 1st chapter.
- 2:31Dear God, please be with us as we read through the scripture,
- 2:35as we read through the words that you gave to Nahum.
- 2:38Please let our eyes be opened and our minds be opened to
- 2:42receiving wisdom from the Holy Spirit and also to be able to
- 2:48apply things that are stated here to our own lives and how we
- 2:54can learn from what you've given Nahem.
- 2:58We ask for this in Jesus name, Amen.
- 3:02So a prophecy concerning Nineveh, the book of the book of
- 3:07the vision of Nahem the Alkoshite, the Lord is a jealous
- 3:14and avenging God. The Lord takes vengeance and is
- 3:18filled with wrath. So gosh, just starting there.
- 3:23I mean it, you know, it's it talks about the kind of the
- 3:27juxtaposition of God's mercy and judgement.
- 3:31Well, this certainly starts out that way.
- 3:33He's So we should read a couple things from the study book about
- 3:39this. So what is a prophecy?
- 3:41The Hebrew word for this word is related to a Hebrew verb meaning
- 3:45to lift up, carry, and is possibly to be understood as
- 3:51either lifting up one's voice or carrying a burden.
- 3:56Such Old Testament prophecies often contained a message of
- 4:01doom. Is God wrong to be jealous?
- 4:06In its usual sense, jealousy is a sinful trait, but the word can
- 4:12also denote A godly quality. In this second sense, God is
- 4:17jealous. The word is related to the word
- 4:20zealous for people's faithfulness.
- 4:23God's jealousy shows his love, not selfishness or lack of
- 4:29control. God's righteous jealousy causes
- 4:33him to take vengeance on those who hurt his children.
- 4:38So we'll go back to Scripture. The Lord takes vengeance on His
- 4:43foes and vents his wrath against his enemies.
- 4:47The Lord is slow to anger but great in power.
- 4:53The Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished.
- 4:58His way is in the whirlwind and the storm, and the clouds and
- 5:04the clouds are the dust of his feet.
- 5:07He rebukes the sea and dries it up.
- 5:10He makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel whither, and
- 5:19the blossoms of Lebanon fade. The mountains quake before him,
- 5:23and the hills melt away. The earth trembles at his
- 5:28presence. The world and all who live in
- 5:31it, who can withstand his indignation, who can endure his
- 5:37fierce anger. His wrath is poured out like
- 5:41fire. The rocks are shattered before
- 5:44him. See, a lot of people don't like
- 5:47to talk about this aspect of God, this character of God, and
- 5:54they only want to talk about him as love or they want to separate
- 5:58him and say, oh, he was different in the Old Testament.
- 6:00Well, Scripture tells us that God doesn't change, he's the
- 6:04same. And if we read the whole Bible,
- 6:08we see that God is both. And if you really think about it
- 6:13from a logical sense, you would have to be if there's evil in
- 6:17the world, then God would need to show love, but also show
- 6:23wrath or have wrath occur because evil hurts.
- 6:30You know, it impacts the love aspect.
- 6:32So it has to be dealt with. And so it to me, it just seems
- 6:36like it's not really hard to understand how God can be both
- 6:40because he's not taking out vengeance or anything on his
- 6:43children. In fact, it switches the in
- 6:47verse 7 and it says the Lord is good, a refuge in times of
- 6:53trouble. So there's trouble going on
- 6:56around us and the Lord is a refuge and he is good.
- 7:00It's the, the when trouble occurs around us, it's, you
- 7:05know, there's several, there could be several things
- 7:09according to the Bible. It can be consequences of
- 7:13actions. It can be the evil one trying to
- 7:18test 1 of God's people, like in the case of Job, or it could be
- 7:24something that God allows to draw people closer to him.
- 7:29Because a lot of times people, you know, we get opportunities
- 7:32to get close to God, but we don't do it.
- 7:35So if we keep ignoring him, he's going to keep making, he's going
- 7:39to keep shaking us up a little bit more to get our attention.
- 7:43And it's not for bad because if we think about ultimately what
- 7:47he wants to do is he wants us to come to him so that we can be
- 7:51his children in the Kingdom of God.
- 7:53That's the purpose behind all of this.
- 7:56But sometimes we're just so stubborn and we just keep
- 7:59ignoring God that he has to send calamity to us to to make us
- 8:05wake up. But then there's the other
- 8:08circumstance where Job, who was always righteous and always did
- 8:12good things and God had, you know, it actually said in
- 8:15Scripture, he said, I think it was Satan that said, yeah, of
- 8:19course he loves you because you always had some sort of hedge of
- 8:23protection around him. And but he was righteous to God.
- 8:27Like he loved God and he showed God he was a righteous man.
- 8:31It's, you know, his faith in action was shown and and so he
- 8:36believed in God and therefore his actions reflected that.
- 8:40And so it wasn't anything that Job did, but Satan being the
- 8:46accuser, challenge God about Job and just said, well, you know,
- 8:51you've just been great to him. So he's not going to turn away
- 8:54from you or he's he's there has no reason to turn away from you.
- 8:58But let me at him and then you'll see how he turns.
- 9:02I mean, that was like Satan's kind of play on this.
- 9:05And then God was like, OK, but you cannot have his soul, but go
- 9:08ahead. And he allowed Satan to test
- 9:12Job, but and Job didn't understand what was going on and
- 9:15he kept pleading with God, but he never turned away from God.
- 9:19And that's a great example for us that if and when we go
- 9:22through things like that, we shouldn't turn away from God
- 9:26because there is a blessing. In fact, at the end of the book
- 9:28of Job, God like doubly blessed his life as a result of him
- 9:33staying true to God and keeping his relationship with God rather
- 9:39than rejecting God. Because we all have that choice
- 9:42when bad things come about, what what we do after that.
- 9:47So anyway. But God is a refuge in times of
- 9:52trouble, certainly in the world. Like Jesus said that in this
- 9:56world we will have trouble but trust in him because he's
- 9:59overcome the world. So when we have trouble, the 1st
- 10:03place we should go to is God. I mean, it just makes sense.
- 10:07Like immediately go to God. Because God, if we are his
- 10:11children, he's going to protect us.
- 10:12He's going to give us a refuge. He's going to make a way for us.
- 10:17And he, this is, this is the way God is.
- 10:21And it shows us this throughout history.
- 10:24So he cares for those who trust in him.
- 10:28But with an overwhelming flood, he will make an end of Nineveh.
- 10:35And Nineveh is in the in the country of Iraq.
- 10:40And I think it's interesting because I didn't really know
- 10:44where Nineveh was originally, but it's it's in Iraq.
- 10:47And also Babylon was in Iraq. And so then it just kind of
- 10:53leads me to wonder, is there something about this place that
- 10:59keeps like spawning these evil people that are coming from it?
- 11:05It's a question that's not really answered in the Bible,
- 11:07but we just see it repeatedly occurring here.
- 11:11So anyway, he said in here, he said, but with an overwhelming
- 11:15flood, he will make an end of Nineveh.
- 11:18He will pursue his foes into the realm of darkness.
- 11:23Now, that seems like a little bit further than just a battle
- 11:28between. I mean, it is a battle, but it's
- 11:31more like a spiritual battle because the realm of darkness, I
- 11:35mean, that's usually like a place where God sends people as
- 11:40in judgement. So it says he will pursue his
- 11:43foes into the realm of darkness. Whatever they plot against the
- 11:50Lord, he will bring to an end. Trouble will not come a second
- 11:56time like when God does this, when he takes his vengeance.
- 12:01And I really do believe that this is about like the end of
- 12:04the age when this happens because it says, you know,
- 12:07trouble will not come a second time.
- 12:10So when God takes care of it, it's over.
- 12:13God is the final authority. They will be entangled.
- 12:17They will be entangled among thorns and drunk from their
- 12:21wine. They will be consumed like dry
- 12:24stubble from you. Nineveh has has one come forth
- 12:32who plots evil against the Lord and devises wicked plans again,
- 12:39that's, you know, this, this Nineveh, there were a lot of
- 12:43sinful people there and that's why God sent Jonah there.
- 12:47Jonah didn't even want to go there, but he hit that's what
- 12:50God wanted him to do and he made it happen.
- 12:52And like the study Bible said it was 100 years before this.
- 12:55So within 100 years time, they're turning back again.
- 12:59It's just, you know, none of these things seem to last very
- 13:02long on this earth. I mean, there's very few people
- 13:05that stay true to God, and I think we kind of see that today
- 13:10too, you know? Anyway, this is what the Lord
- 13:15says. Although they have allies and
- 13:18are numerous, they will be destroyed and pass away.
- 13:23Although I have afflicted you, Judah, I will afflict you no
- 13:26more. Well, Judah has Judah or the
- 13:30Jews have suffered throughout history and that's still has
- 13:37happened and is happening today. So that's again why I think this
- 13:44is talking about more at the end of the age that I will afflict
- 13:47you no more. There's going to be a time when
- 13:49all this stops. Now I will break their yoke from
- 13:53your neck and tear your shackles away.
- 13:57The Lord has given a command concerning you, Nineveh.
- 14:01You will have no descendants to beat, to bear, to bear your
- 14:06name. I will destroy the images and
- 14:10the idols that are in the temple of your gods.
- 14:15I will prepare your grave, for you are vile.
- 14:21Look there on the mountains, the feet of one who brings good
- 14:25news, who proclaims peace. So as soon as I read that, I
- 14:30think immediately about Jesus, because Jesus brings everlasting
- 14:35peace. When God is saying, you know,
- 14:36that there's never going to be anything, that God's going to
- 14:41take care of this. There will not be a second time.
- 14:44It's going to be 1 and done. That's only going to be at the
- 14:49time when Jesus returns. And so celebrate your festivals,
- 14:53Judah and fulfill your vows vows.
- 14:57No more will the wicked invade you.
- 15:00They will be completely destroyed.
- 15:05Well, that hasn't happened yet. And so when I was thinking about
- 15:09look there on the mountains, the feet of one who brings good
- 15:13news, who proclaims peace. So I know this talks, I mean
- 15:18about there's a about evangelism, evangelization is
- 15:25talked about in that way. But I think this also refers to,
- 15:30I mean, especially here refers to Jesus at this time.
- 15:33And see, I'll read the verse that makes me think that it's
- 15:37from Zechariah, another prophet, Zechariah 14, verse 4.
- 15:41On that day, his feet talking about Jesus will stand on the
- 15:46Mount of Olives east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of
- 15:50Olives will be split in two from east to West, forming a great
- 15:56valley with half of the mountain moving north and half moving
- 16:01South. So let's see because the the
- 16:09prior verse to that says then the Lord will go out and fight
- 16:14against those nations as he fights on a day of battle.
- 16:21So this is yeah, if I go up to Zechariah 14 verse one and start
- 16:26there and read down maybe to get the full context.
- 16:29And because this is talking about the Lord comes and reigns,
- 16:32and it's in Ezekiel 3839, Mark 13, Revelation 20 through 22 are
- 16:41also things that are compared to these verses.
- 16:45So a day of the Lord is coming, Jerusalem, when your perceptions
- 16:50will be plundered and divided up within your very walls.
- 16:56This is kind of reading that right now next week we have
- 17:01this, I don't know what's going to happen, but this UN meeting
- 17:05actually in one week from today on the 23rd and they are talking
- 17:10about, I mean it's on the agenda.
- 17:11I don't know how official it will become, but they did have a
- 17:14vote last Friday about the two state solution dividing land
- 17:21between Israel and Palestine. And the nations that voted there
- 17:26were, I think 142 that voted for it and maybe like 10 against it
- 17:32or 12 against it, I'm not sure. And then there were another like
- 17:3510 or 12 that with withheld their vote.
- 17:39But the majority is believing that they should divide the land
- 17:46of Israel in the name of peace and security.
- 17:52And Scripture also tells us when they say peace and security
- 17:56comes sudden destruction. So this is interesting that
- 17:59Zechariah says, Zechariah 14, a day of the Lord is coming,
- 18:03Jerusalem, when your possessions will be plundered and divided up
- 18:08within your walls. I will gather all the nations to
- 18:13Jerusalem to fight against it. The city will be captured, the
- 18:19houses ransacked and the women raped.
- 18:24Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the
- 18:28people will not be taken from the city.
- 18:32Then the Lord will go out and fight against those nations as
- 18:37he fights on a day of battle. On that day his feet will stand
- 18:42on the Mount of Olives east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of
- 18:45Olives will split in two from east to West, forming a great
- 18:49valley with half of the mountain moving north and half moving S
- 18:53You will flee by the mountain valley, for it will extend to
- 18:57Azel. You will flee as as you fled
- 19:02from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah, king of Judah.
- 19:07Then the Lord my God will come and all the holy ones with him.
- 19:14So this is going to be like this is that that final battle that
- 19:20God has with final battle of good and evil.
- 19:24On that day there will be another neither sunlight nor
- 19:28cold frosty darkness. It will be a unique day, a day
- 19:34known only to the Lord, with no distinction between day and
- 19:40night. When evening comes, there will
- 19:43be light. On that day, living water will
- 19:46flow out from Jerusalem, half of it east to the Dead Sea and half
- 19:52of it West to the Mediterranean Sea.
- 19:56In summer and in winter the the Lord will be king over the whole
- 20:04earth. On that day there will be 1 Lord
- 20:08and His name, the only name. The whole land from Giba to
- 20:13Rimmon South of Jerusalem will become like Arabia, but
- 20:19Jerusalem will be raised up high from the Benjamin Gate to the
- 20:24site of the first gate to the corner gate, and from the Tower
- 20:28of Hananel to the royal wine presses, and will remain in its
- 20:32place. It will be inhabited.
- 20:35Never again will it be destroyed.
- 20:38Jerusalem will be secure. This is after Jesus returns.
- 20:43This is the plague with which the Lord will strike all nations
- 20:47that fought against Jerusalem. Their flesh will rot while they
- 20:52are still standing on their feet.
- 20:55Their eyes will rot in their sockets and their tongues will
- 20:59rot in their mouths. On that day people will be
- 21:02stricken by the Lord with great panic.
- 21:06They will seize each other by the hand and and attack one
- 21:10another. Judah too will fight at
- 21:13Jerusalem. The wealth of all the
- 21:15surrounding nations will be collected, great quantities of
- 21:19gold and silver and clothing. A similar plague will strike
- 21:23horses and mules, the camels and donkeys, and all the animals in
- 21:27those camps. Then the survivors from all the
- 21:31nations that have attacked Jerusalem will go up year after
- 21:37year to worship the King, the Lord Almighty, and to celebrate
- 21:42the festival of Tabernacles. If any of the people of the
- 21:48earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord
- 21:51Almighty, they will have no reign.
- 21:54If the Egyptian people do not go up and take part, they will have
- 21:58no reign. The Lord will bring on them the
- 22:00plague he inflicts on the nations that do not go up to
- 22:03celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles.
- 22:06So we see here that when Jesus returns we will be people will
- 22:10be going to Jerusalem to celebrate the Festival of
- 22:13Tabernacles during the Millennium reign of Christ.
- 22:17This will be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all
- 22:20the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Festival of
- 22:23Tabernacles. On that day.
- 22:26Holy to the Lord will be inscribed on the bells of the
- 22:29horses and the cooking pots in the Lord's house will be like
- 22:33the sacred bowls in front of the altar.
- 22:36Every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to the Lord
- 22:40Almighty, and all who come to sacrifice will take some of the
- 22:46pots and cook in them. And on that day there will no
- 22:49longer be a Canaanite in the House of the Lord Almighty.
- 22:54Well, that was the whole chapter 14 of Zechariah.
- 22:56But again, this is when his feet will be on the Mount of Olives
- 23:01and, and it says, look, they're on the mountains.
- 23:04The feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace.
- 23:10That's Jesus. So anyway, again, Jesus is all
- 23:15over the Old Testament, but we don't always see it right away.
- 23:21So let's go through questions and answers, and then I will end
- 23:24this chapter. Our tornadoes and earthquakes
- 23:27signs of God's anger. We should caution against making
- 23:32an automatic connection between natural calamities and the wrath
- 23:36of God. It is clear, however, that God
- 23:40has a passionate commitment to righteousness, and He becomes
- 23:44angry when confronted with unrighteousness.
- 23:48Whether a particular natural calamity is a direct act of God
- 23:52against a community or country is something known only to God
- 23:57unless He reveals a connection. Does God have mood swings?
- 24:03No, although here it seems that he does abruptly ship from wrath
- 24:08when he was talking like the first part of his wrath, and
- 24:10then it said the Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble.
- 24:14It might be difficult at times to see how God's love can be
- 24:19compatible with His judgement, but God never changes.
- 24:23His character and actions are consistent throughout human
- 24:26history. He loves people and hates
- 24:29injustice. Who would plot against God?
- 24:33Perhaps Sennacherib. And I've been saying that name
- 24:37for so so wrong and it's hard to.
- 24:41Sennacherib, I believe is the way it's supposed to be stated.
- 24:46The Assyrian king who defied God and threatened Judah during
- 24:51Hezekiah's reign. Another possibility is Asher
- 24:55Banapal, a later Assyrian king who conquered Egypt and subdued
- 25:01Judah's king Manasseh. Or the verse could refer
- 25:06generally to nation to the nation of Assyria itself, with
- 25:11all its brutally ambitious kings.
- 25:14Some think the phrase suggests an evil spiritual power behind
- 25:19Assyria's aggression. That's something that today
- 25:23everybody seems to, well, not everybody, but a lot of people
- 25:27still have a hard time getting their heads around that, about
- 25:31the spiritual battle that we are in and to see things for what
- 25:36they are, to have spiritual discernment of this.
- 25:39But Ephesians chapter 6, verse 12 tells us that we wrestle not
- 25:45against flesh and blood. It's not against human beings
- 25:48that we are in conflict with. There's a spiritual aspect and
- 25:55maybe I just, it actually helps me to deal with people because
- 26:01if you think about it, if you think that all of us are sinners
- 26:07and we are all like disobedient to God until the point where
- 26:14our, our eyes are opened and we decide that we don't want to be
- 26:19that way anymore And we ask for forgiveness and we repent and
- 26:25receive the Holy Spirit. Then the Holy Spirit, the power
- 26:29of God starts working in our lives and starts changing us
- 26:34from the sinful ways of our past.
- 26:37We become a new creation. Just like Jesus said, you must
- 26:41be born again to enter the Kingdom of God.
- 26:44No one can enter the Kingdom, Kingdom of God unless they are
- 26:48born again. That's in John chapter 3.
- 26:50So unless we are filled with the Holy Spirit and we become a new
- 26:55creation, we can't get into God's Kingdom.
- 27:01And that's what Jesus himself said.
- 27:04So there is. I listened to what Jesus said.
- 27:10So anyway, this we, this whole thing about for our struggle is
- 27:17not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers.
- 27:21This isn't like all rulers, but against the authorities, against
- 27:24the powers of this Dark World and against the spiritual forces
- 27:30of evil in the heavenly realms. Just like what Job experienced
- 27:36if Satan was up there and he has people that are aligned with him
- 27:40as well. They are all under the control
- 27:42of God. That's The thing is that they
- 27:44cannot do anything without God giving him permission.
- 27:47So it, you know, like ultimately pray our prayers to God matter
- 27:55and God will take care of this. Like we have No Fear when we
- 28:00have the Holy Spirit because we have the Holy Spirit residing in
- 28:02us. We are a new creation.
- 28:04We don't have to fear these kinds of things because we have
- 28:08the armor of God. It is God's protection that we
- 28:11have. And it says in in Ephesians 6,
- 28:15verse 11, put on the full armor of God so that you can take your
- 28:20stand against the devil's schemes.
- 28:23The devil is scheming to. He's seeking, killing and
- 28:29destroying. That's what he wants to do with
- 28:30people. And the reason I say this is
- 28:35because I want people to know you are not helpless.
- 28:40All we need to do is trust in God to be born again, to have
- 28:46the Holy Spirit, and then we don't have to fear these things
- 28:49because it will be God acting on our behalf.
- 28:53We just trust God. We put our faith in God.
- 28:55We know scripture, I mean it talks about all the components
- 28:58of the armor of God. But if we are just ignorant to
- 29:03this, if we're blind to this, we have no idea that there's an
- 29:08enemy, an unseen enemy targeting us, trying to destroy us, and we
- 29:16don't see it. So we how do you fight something
- 29:20you don't see? If you're if your knowledge is
- 29:26blinded, if you, if you are, if you are ignorant of the fact of
- 29:33this, you won't even think about this.
- 29:35You'll think it's all natural causes that are happening and
- 29:39you won't even think that maybe it's something I'm not seeing
- 29:42here that's active, that's trying to destroy.
- 29:46And like I said, that really helps with people because then
- 29:49you can see beyond the person. You can say they're just being
- 29:53used by God's enemy to come against me and they don't even
- 30:00know it. So we can't.
- 30:03And, you know, we were in the same condition until we have
- 30:09spiritual discernment, until we are born again and we have the
- 30:12Holy Spirit that reveals these things to us.
- 30:16And then we can see that what spirit is actually influencing a
- 30:22person because we are either being influenced by the Holy
- 30:25Spirit or we are in rebellion to God.
- 30:28And we've given the enemy access to our lives.
- 30:31And that affects us. It affects how we interact with
- 30:36other people and we all came from that.
- 30:40So we should have empathy for each other knowing that we
- 30:45ourselves came from that condition too.
- 30:48But it's again like trying to share the good news that you
- 30:53don't have to be stuck there. All you need to do is turn to
- 30:56God and receive the Holy Spirit and God will begin changing our
- 31:04lives and being that safe refuge for us.
- 31:12And we don't have to go through the, the, the battles like that.
- 31:16If we just trust God and just know that he will.
- 31:22He's a, he's a God of like he keeps his promises.
- 31:25So there's so many things about it that I, I guess that's really
- 31:31all I need to say about this right now.
- 31:33But let's go to the next question.
- 31:35Why does God afflict people he loves when Israel betrayed her
- 31:42commitment to God? So there, it's kind of like
- 31:45Israel's not being obedient to God.
- 31:48God allowed Assyria to destroy the northern Kingdom of Israel
- 31:54and afflict the southern Kingdom of Israel, of the southern
- 31:58Kingdom of Judah until Judah repented of her unfaithfulness
- 32:05and cried out for deliverance. See, God will give us more.
- 32:09It's not, you know, He. Because ultimately, if we're so
- 32:14stubborn that we don't see the little things when God's trying
- 32:18to gently say, hey, turn to me, turn to me and we just ignore
- 32:23Him, we don't even realize that the the stuff in our life is a
- 32:27consequence of our actions. So we just keep on going and
- 32:31we're like, gosh, I don't know why all this stuff is happening
- 32:33to me. Well, if we knew the Bible, we
- 32:37would know why it's happening and then we can pray about it
- 32:42and say, God, please take this from me, please deal with this.
- 32:46Please address this, or please give me wisdom on how to do
- 32:50this. But ultimately, before we even
- 32:53ask God to do anything, what does it say here about what
- 32:57Judah did? Judah repented of her
- 33:00unfaithfulness and cried out for deliverance.
- 33:03That's like, I don't want this anymore.
- 33:06So we have to humble ourselves, recognize that we are, you know,
- 33:13acting like an enemy of God and ask for forgiveness and say,
- 33:17take this away from me, the deliverance of this, like, you
- 33:21know, repenting of unfaithfulness.
- 33:23Are we not being faithful to God?
- 33:25Are we doing things that he says don't do?
- 33:29And if so, then we need to change that.
- 33:34When God's people cry out in repentance, God keeps forgiving,
- 33:39loving, and working to restore the broken relationships.
- 33:44God's loving discipline is at work today in those who who are
- 33:50committed to Him. So again, it it requires A
- 33:54commitment to Him. If we are not committed to Him,
- 33:58how can we expect that He's going to be protecting us
- 34:01because we've chosen to be an enemy of His.
- 34:04We're at war with him when we are rebelling against him.
- 34:08That's not showing love to God. So how can we think, OK, I'm
- 34:13going to do these things against you, but now life got tough and
- 34:18now help me, help me get out of this.
- 34:20Like I don't want to change my ways, but just take the stuff
- 34:23away from me. That doesn't work according to
- 34:26the Bible. According to the Bible, we have
- 34:28to 1st recognize what we're doing and go to God about it.
- 34:35So how did how did God afflict Judah?
- 34:38God put his people into the hands of a cruel foreign army.
- 34:43Assyria became God's tool to punish and cleanse and punish
- 34:50and cleanse Judah. This thus fulfilling the
- 34:53prediction that foreigners would dominate God's people if they
- 34:59were unfaithful to Him. And boy, there's a lot of
- 35:03references, a lot of biblical references about that statement,
- 35:07and I think we might want to read that again.
- 35:10Foreigners would dominate God's people if they were unfaithful
- 35:16to him. Talk about needing a revival,
- 35:21needing to turn to God. And these foreigners, they're
- 35:27not. It's not just like these are
- 35:31like mean people, evil people, cruel people.
- 35:35It says a cruel foreign army. That's what it is.
- 35:38It's not just, you know, other Christians from another country
- 35:43or something like that. No, that's not what this is
- 35:46talking about. This is talking about evil, like
- 35:49God allowing evil whenever he talks about foreign.
- 35:52It's not in the Bible, it's not about race.
- 35:56It's not about the things that people make it into today, color
- 36:00of people's skin and all that stuff.
- 36:01No, these are usually people who are worshipping another God, not
- 36:06him. They are worshipping another
- 36:08God. Those are what foreigners are in
- 36:11the Bible. They're people who worship
- 36:13something else other than God. So God did it to to them and he
- 36:21will, He will do it like God doesn't change.
- 36:24Why would he treat us any different than the way he treats
- 36:29treated Judah? I mean it shows God's character,
- 36:32shows how God responds when we are disobedient.
- 36:38So then it talks about like when would this peace come?
- 36:42Some see two contexts in which this promise could be fulfilled.
- 36:47First, the people of Judah heard great news of coming
- 36:51deliverance. Nineveh would be destroyed and
- 36:54Assyrian forces would suffer their final defeat soon
- 36:58afterwards. And that was fulfilled in six O
- 37:009 BC. Nineveh was so completely
- 37:03destroyed that it's runes were not identified until 1845.
- 37:10The second context of this promise of peace tells the good
- 37:15news of the Messiah. Jesus Christ breaks the power of
- 37:19evil and will achieve final victory at his second coming.
- 37:27So this study Bible references the feet of one who brings good
- 37:33news. It's talking about more like
- 37:36people. But I kind of see this as more
- 37:38like Jesus is going to bring, you know, because it says the
- 37:41feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace.
- 37:45Like Jesus will be announcing his authority over the earth.
- 37:49He will be the king and he will pronounce peace.
- 37:52I mean, I think that's the ultimate feat of the one.
- 37:55And that'll be on the Mount of Olives.
- 37:58Like I said, the study Bible will refers us to Isaiah 52
- 38:03verse 7 and says how beautiful on the mountains are the feet of
- 38:08those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good
- 38:13tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion your God reigns.
- 38:20So again, that is when Jesus takes over like that God is will
- 38:24be reigning that's and there will be salvation will that
- 38:28salvation only comes through Jesus.
- 38:30So that's all talking about Jesus and that's in the book of
- 38:33Isaiah chapter 52. Then in Romans it talks about
- 38:39this the feet also Romans 10 verse 15 and how can anyone
- 38:44preach unless they are sent as it is written.
- 38:49How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.
- 38:55So it also reflects on the good news that are shared, that are
- 39:01that are shared. So anyway, that's the end of
- 39:04Chapter 1. So I'll end now and we will
- 39:07start with Chapter 2 the next time.
