Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Richard Sherman Podcast. And what a
- 0:08Speaker 1: game on Monday night. I thought this division matchup would
- 0:11Speaker 1: be closer than it was. But Patrick Mahomes and obviously
- 0:15Speaker 1: the new addition K-9 dominated this game. The Kansas City
- 0:20Speaker 1: Chiefs and Spags defense looked phenomenal. You wondered what they
- 0:24Speaker 1: would look like when they lose Jalen Watson and Trent McDuffie.
- 0:29Speaker 1: two really good corners, and they're going with a very
- 0:32Speaker 1: young secondary, what would they look like after that? Well,
- 0:35Speaker 1: the answer is they still look damn good, and that's
- 0:38Speaker 1: for sure. Mansoor Delaney, who has a pick, his third
- 0:42Speaker 1: play of the game, gets injured later on, but Noel
- 0:45Speaker 1: Williams looked really good, just aggressive. Every time I looked up,
- 0:49Speaker 1: he was just jumping off the tape in the run game,
- 0:51Speaker 1: in the pass game, forced a couple penalties. They were
- 0:54Speaker 1: sticky in coverage. They were putting pressure. On Bo Nix,
- 0:57Speaker 1: all game long, they held the Broncos to two of
- 1:00Speaker 1: 12 on third down. When you're not executing on third down,
- 1:04Speaker 1: it's really tough to win these ball games. But I
- 1:08Speaker 1: didn't think they would run as much as they did.
- 1:10Speaker 1: I think they ran almost the first, they ran nine
- 1:16Speaker 1: times in the first 10 plays. And you knew they
- 1:18Speaker 1: were going to try to keep the ball out of
- 1:20Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes' hands, kind of keep him out of danger.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Let him kind of work his legs back into football,
- 1:26Speaker 1: you know, and not just put the game on his shoulders.
- 1:29Speaker 1: And Kenneth Walker gives them the ability to do that.
- 1:33Speaker 1: He had 23 carries for 173 yards and a 60-yard touchdown.
- 1:37Speaker 1: The explosiveness, the speed, all the things that made him
- 1:41Speaker 1: great in Seattle. The only issue was durability. And we
- 1:46Speaker 1: will see if running him this way causes any issues
- 1:49Speaker 1: down the line.
- 1:50Speaker 2: But he looked fantastic. He looked like he did.
- 1:53Speaker 1: At the end of last season and in the playoffs
- 1:55Speaker 1: for the Seattle Seahawks and why he got the Super
- 1:58Speaker 1: Bowl MVP. And if he can continue to play this
- 2:01Speaker 1: way and they can start to work in Xavier Worthy
- 2:05Speaker 1: and Taequann Thornton and Rasheed Rice. Rasheed Rice only had
- 2:08Speaker 1: two targets today, but broke a tackle and had a touchdown,
- 2:11Speaker 1: 13-yard touchdown in this game. Emmitt Johnson had a good
- 2:16Speaker 1: game backing up.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Kenneth Walker.
- 2:19Speaker 1: And they just look like, the Kansas city chiefs of all,
- 2:23Speaker 1: not even the Kansas city chiefs of all, they look
- 2:24Speaker 1: like a championship contender. Uh, if you look at this
- 2:27Speaker 1: Denver Broncos defense from last season, obviously they're without Jonathan Cooper.
- 2:31Speaker 1: He is on the exempt list, but this is one
- 2:34Speaker 1: of the top defenses in the national football league. And
- 2:37Speaker 1: they put up 31 on this defense and made it
- 2:40Speaker 1: look relatively easy. It didn't take any crazy, uh, Herculean
- 2:44Speaker 1: effort from Patrick Mahomes. It took a great running game,
- 2:48Speaker 1: a great plan and great execution. And, They played a
- 2:51Speaker 1: left tackle that was an undrafted player at left tackle
- 2:56Speaker 1: because of the injuries and things that have happened throughout
- 3:00Speaker 1: training camp. But if the Kansas City Chiefs can play
- 3:04Speaker 1: like this all season long, then again, people are going
- 3:06Speaker 1: to be upset because they will be right back in contention.
- 3:09Speaker 1: And that's why I thought, hey, if Josh Allen was
- 3:12Speaker 1: going to win a Super Bowl, it was supposed to
- 3:15Speaker 1: be last year when there was no Patrick Mahomes and
- 3:17Speaker 1: the Kansas City Chiefs. There was no Burrow, no Lamar.
- 3:20Speaker 1: No nothing to get in his way, but he didn't.
- 3:25Speaker 1: The other question in this game was Bo Nix and
- 3:28Speaker 1: the Denver Broncos, and what is Sean Payton going to do? Obviously,
- 3:32Speaker 1: he handed over the play-calling duties to Davis Webb. They
- 3:36Speaker 1: only scored 10 points in this game against a Kansas
- 3:38Speaker 1: City Chiefs defense that's super young. I don't think anybody
- 3:43Speaker 1: was expecting them to dominate in the fashion that they
- 3:45Speaker 1: did in this game. They caused multiple turnovers. They had
- 3:48Speaker 1: Bo Nix flustered the entire game. He dropped the ball
- 3:53Speaker 1: a few times, fumbled it, threw a pick to Mansoor
- 3:55Speaker 1: Delaney in what looked like two-man. The Chiefs defense had
- 4:00Speaker 1: four sacks. They just looked better. They looked like the
- 4:03Speaker 1: more dominant team. They didn't look like they were playing
- 4:05Speaker 1: young guys in the secondary. They looked like they were
- 4:07Speaker 1: playing veterans in the secondary. And if they look like that,
- 4:11Speaker 1: and the Denver Broncos continue to look like they did offensively,
- 4:14Speaker 1: because They were supposed to be better with Jalen Waddell
- 4:18Speaker 1: and the new weapons they got. And he was supposed
- 4:21Speaker 1: to be a big-time factor in this offense. Evan Ingram,
- 4:24Speaker 1: he factored in. He had a touchdown in the game.
- 4:26Speaker 1: But I think everybody was expecting more explosiveness from this offense,
- 4:31Speaker 1: and it just wasn't there. So, obviously, there's going to
- 4:35Speaker 1: be a conversation. There's going to be questions all week
- 4:36Speaker 1: for Sean Payton and Davis Webb. Like, do you continue
- 4:39Speaker 1: to let Davis Webb learn on the job and learn
- 4:42Speaker 1: while the season may become– a lot more dire. They
- 4:47Speaker 1: have a really difficult schedule coming up. They play the Rams.
- 4:52Speaker 1: I think they play the Niners. I think they play
- 4:55Speaker 1: the Jacksonville Jaguars. They play some really difficult teams that
- 4:58Speaker 1: could easily beat them if they play like they did tonight.
- 5:02Speaker 2: So I don't know.
- 5:03Speaker 1: There's some concern for me with these Denver Broncos. And
- 5:06Speaker 1: if you're a Kansas City Chiefs fan, I know everybody
- 5:09Speaker 1: else in the league is like, the Chiefs are back again.
- 5:12Speaker 1: I mean, I'm sorry to say it, but it looks
- 5:15Speaker 1: like that's true. Andy Reid is about to do it
- 5:17Speaker 1: again with a great run game, some really fast and
- 5:22Speaker 1: explosive receivers, and, of course, Travis Kelsey. Travis Kelsey is
- 5:27Speaker 1: still battling father time, had a 60-something yard run, and, hey,
- 5:33Speaker 1: you got to give him credit. He's out here still
- 5:35Speaker 1: being crafty, still doing his job, got open, made an
- 5:38Speaker 1: explosive play, almost scored on that play.
- 5:41Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know.
- 5:44Speaker 1: I don't know how he keeps doing it. I don't
- 5:45Speaker 1: know how the Kansas City Chiefs keep doing it. They
- 5:47Speaker 1: have great scouting. They have great personnel development, a development team,
- 5:52Speaker 1: because these guys, these young guys they draft, come in
- 5:56Speaker 1: ready to play, ready to make an impact. When they
- 5:58Speaker 1: get rid of two guys who played in, I think,
- 6:01Speaker 1: three Super Bowls, and then just reload more corners who
- 6:06Speaker 1: go out there and look like they did not miss
- 6:08Speaker 1: a beat, and Spags is calling it like he has
- 6:10Speaker 1: always called it, You got to tip your cap off
- 6:14Speaker 1: to this team. And on the other side, a defense
- 6:16Speaker 1: that has been dominant is missing one of the best
- 6:19Speaker 1: pass rushers in the league. But still, I don't think
- 6:21Speaker 1: you should be giving up 31 points. They couldn't stop
- 6:24Speaker 1: the run. They couldn't stop the explosive plays. They weren't
- 6:29Speaker 1: getting a ton of pressure on Patrick Mahomes. When they did,
- 6:31Speaker 1: he beat him with his legs. He beat him with
- 6:33Speaker 1: his legs multiple times. They called his touchdown back. He
- 6:36Speaker 1: turned around and got another touchdown. I mean, Patrick Mahomes
- 6:39Speaker 1: still got it. And you didn't see... any residual impacts
- 6:43Speaker 1: of that knee injury that he's coming off of. He
- 6:46Speaker 1: looked good. He looked confident. Obviously, he still has some
- 6:50Speaker 1: rust to work off, but man, Monday Night Football, this
- 6:55Speaker 1: start of the season was so exciting. It was so action-packed.
- 6:59Speaker 1: So many points, way too many points. I'm a defensive guy,
- 7:02Speaker 1: way too many points. I think hopefully there's some corrections
- 7:05Speaker 1: and teams get things together. Because if I see another
- 7:08Speaker 1: 59-point game from anybody, I don't know. I don't know
- 7:10Speaker 1: if I can watch that team. I'm talking so bad
- 7:12Speaker 1: about them on this podcast. That's for dang sure.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Football is back, folks.
- 7:16Speaker 1: And you need to change the way you invest in
- 7:19Speaker 1: the NFL this season. It's time to finally ditch your
- 7:23Speaker 1: old sportsbook apps. because Polymarket is here.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Polymarket is a legal prediction market now available in all
- 7:30Speaker 3: 50 states. And those old sportsbooks, they're a relic of
- 7:34Speaker 3: the past. On Polymarket, you can trade on all things NFL,
- 7:38Speaker 3: from the Sunday slate, to who wins rookie of the year,
- 7:42Speaker 3: to who performs the halftime show.
- 7:43Speaker 2: We hear from.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Listeners all the time about the sportsbook's Driving them crazy.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Trying to cash out live. They can block you as
- 7:51Speaker 1: often as they want. Holding your money hostage. Holly Market
- 7:55Speaker 1: gives you the freedom to cash out instantly.
- 7:58Speaker 3: If the momentum swings, you sell off of it in
- 8:01Speaker 3: real time. You are in control. No one can lock
- 8:04Speaker 3: you out. And you can also buy in anytime. So
- 8:08Speaker 3: when the market dips, like if a team starts slow
- 8:11Speaker 3: and drops to, say, 40%, that's not a loss. That's
- 8:15Speaker 3: when you buy in. At Polymarket, you can buy cheap
- 8:19Speaker 3: and ride the momentum back up.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Polymarket is so confident that you won't go back to
- 8:23Speaker 1: your old ways that they're issuing a challenge. They're giving
- 8:27Speaker 1: you a $ 50 bonus when you deposit just $ 10. Sign
- 8:31Speaker 1: up right now with the promo code Sherman.
- 8:33Speaker 3: That's polymarket.us and use promo code Sherman to get a
- 8:38Speaker 3: $ 50 bonus when you deposit just $ 10.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Man. What else can I say about this Chiefs team?
- 8:45Speaker 1: After everything I saw, the Buffalo Bills got a tough
- 8:48Speaker 1: win in Houston, a place they hadn't won in a
- 8:51Speaker 1: long time. The Cincinnati Bengals looked good defensively, caused a
- 8:57Speaker 1: lot of turnovers early, scored some points. Joe Burrow didn't
- 9:01Speaker 1: have his best game, but he's still Joe Burrow. So
- 9:03Speaker 1: that's still going to be a tough out. Baltimore scoring
- 9:06Speaker 1: 41 points. Derrick Henry still looks like King Henry. Who
- 9:11Speaker 1: is the class of the AFC? I think you still
- 9:14Speaker 1: got to put the Chiefs in it. I mean, you still,
- 9:17Speaker 1: you got to, the reigning AFC champions are the New
- 9:21Speaker 1: England Patriots. They did not look great against the Seattle Seahawks.
- 9:24Speaker 1: They scored only 10 points in the game. Drake May
- 9:27Speaker 1: looked really flustered. Looks like he hadn't figured it out
- 9:29Speaker 1: from the Super Bowl. And if teams keep attacking them
- 9:32Speaker 1: in the way that they did, A.J. Brown is out
- 9:34Speaker 1: for a little while. So I don't think they're the
- 9:36Speaker 1: class of the AFC right now, even though they're the
- 9:38Speaker 1: reigning AFC champions. the Jacksonville Jaguars have a case. I mean,
- 9:45Speaker 1: that receiving core is as deadly and dangerous as any
- 9:47Speaker 1: receiving core in the national football league. That defense is
- 9:50Speaker 1: as aggressive and opportunistic as any defense with, Josh Allen,
- 9:55Speaker 1: Hines Allen, Trevon Walker, Alua Khan. They have some playmakers
- 10:02Speaker 1: back there. And obviously our guy Travis Hunter is going
- 10:05Speaker 1: to be making an impact this season.
- 10:10Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know.
- 10:12Speaker 1: I just, it's hard to bet against the Kansas City
- 10:16Speaker 1: Chiefs when Patrick Mahomes is under center and he's healthy.
- 10:19Speaker 1: And now they have an incredible run game. The defense
- 10:21Speaker 1: looks incredible. I feel like the Kansas City Chiefs, there
- 10:27Speaker 1: were question marks coming in. I couldn't put them in
- 10:29Speaker 1: the top five without seeing what Patrick Mahomes and what
- 10:32Speaker 1: the plan was going forward. But, boy, I think they're
- 10:35Speaker 1: going to make a debut in my top five power
- 10:38Speaker 1: rankings this week because of how well they played this week.
- 10:41Speaker 1: And I don't think it's a fluke. This was a
- 10:45Speaker 1: sustainable way to play football. Great defense, great run game.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Look for explosives in a passing game. Catch people off guard.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. Deadly combination. Now you gave
- 10:56Speaker 1: him an explosive running back.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Good luck.
- 10:58Speaker 1: This AFC is going to be fun to watch. Football
- 11:02Speaker 1: is going to be fun to watch, for that matter.
- 11:04Speaker 1: I know this is going to be a great season.
- 11:06Speaker 1: It's already been a great season outside of too many
- 11:08Speaker 1: points being scored. But... The next game this week will
- 11:13Speaker 1: be us in Buffalo in the new stadium with the
- 11:17Speaker 1: Buffalo Bills.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Playing the Detroit Lions.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Getting to watch Josh Allen continue his MVP campaign. Can
- 11:26Speaker 1: the Detroit Lions shake off whatever that was in the
- 11:28Speaker 1: second half versus the New Orleans Saints?
- 11:31Speaker 2: We will see. Check out TNF tonight at 7 p.m. Eastern,
- 11:35Speaker 2: 4 p.m. Pacific. I will be there. You be there.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Our B-Square, as always, appreciate you joining me. You could
- 11:41Speaker 1: be anywhere in the world, but you're here with me,
- 11:43Speaker 1: and I will see you there.
