- 0:00Why do good people,
- 0:03righteous people, people of faith go through sufferings,
- 0:09especially sufferings at the hand of the
- 0:12wicked? Why do good people go through terrible
- 0:17trials such as divorce,
- 0:21leukemia, cancer,
- 0:24loss of a loved one? Why does God allow— seemingly
- 0:30he allows evil to prevail and the wicked to
- 0:33prevail and the innocent to suffer. Why does
- 0:37this happen? These are the questions we're going to
- 0:40delve in today as we look at Job chapter
- 0:4516 through 19.
- 0:48Join us. Welcome to the Daily Audio Torah.
- 0:52Today is August 25th. Now let's continue
- 0:55our journey reading through the entire Bible in 1 year.
- 0:59This week we are reading from the New Living Translation for the Old Testament
- 1:03and for the New Testament.
- 1:07Deuteronomy 13:1-18.
- 1:11Suppose there are prophets among you, or those who dream dreams about
- 1:15the future, and they promise you signs or miracles, and the predicted
- 1:20signs or miracles occur. If they then say, come, let us
- 1:24worship other gods— gods you have not known before— do
- 1:28not listen to them.
- 1:31The Lord your God is testing you to see if you truly love Him with
- 1:35all your heart and soul. Serve only
- 1:38the Lord your God and fear Him alone.
- 1:42Obey His commands, listen to His voice, and cling to
- 1:45Him. The false prophets or visionaries who try
- 1:49to lead you astray must be put to death, for they encourage rebellion
- 1:54against the Lord your God, who redeemed you from slavery and
- 1:58brought you out of the land of Egypt.
- 2:01Since they try to lead you astray from the way the Lord your God commanded
- 2:05you to live, you must put them to death. In this way,
- 2:09you will purge the evil from among you. Suppose someone
- 2:13secretly entices you, even your brother, your son or your daughter,
- 2:17your beloved wife or your closest friend, and says,
- 2:21let us go worship other gods, gods that neither you nor your
- 2:26ancestors have known. They might suggest that you worship
- 2:29the gods of peoples who live nearby or who come from the ends
- 2:33of the earth. But do not give in or listen.
- 2:37Have no pity and do not spare or protect
- 2:41them. You must put them to death. Strike the
- 2:45first blow yourself, and then all the people must join in.
- 2:50Stone the guilty ones to death because they have tried to draw you away
- 2:54from the Lord your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt,
- 2:57place of slavery. Then all Israel will hear
- 3:01about it and be afraid, and no one will act so wickedly again.
- 3:06When you begin living in the towns the Lord your God is giving you,
- 3:09you may hear that scoundrels among you are leading their fellow citizens
- 3:13astray by saying, Let us go worship other gods—
- 3:17gods you have not known before. In such cases you must
- 3:21examine the facts carefully. If you find that the report is true
- 3:25and such a detestable act has been committed among you,
- 3:29you must attack that town and completely destroy all its inhabitants,
- 3:33as well as all the livestock. Then you
- 3:37must pile all the plunder in the middle of the open square and burn
- 3:41it. Burn the entire town as a burnt offering to
- 3:44the Lord your God. That town must remain a ruin
- 3:48forever; it may never be rebuilt.
- 3:52Keep none of the plunder that has been set apart for destruction.
- 3:56Then the Lord will turn his fierce anger and be merciful to you.
- 4:00He will have compassion on you and make you a large nation,
- 4:03just as He swore to your ancestors. The Lord your God will be merciful
- 4:08only if you listen to His voice and keep all His commands
- 4:12that I am giving you today, doing what pleases Him.
- 4:16Job 16:1-19:29.
- 4:28Then Job spoke again, I have heard all this before.
- 4:32What miserable comforters you are! Won't you ever
- 4:36stop your flow of foolish words? What have I said that makes
- 4:40you speak so endlessly? I could say the
- 4:44same things if you were in my place. I could spout
- 4:47off my criticisms against you and shake my head at you, but that's
- 4:51not what I would do. I would speak in a way that helps you.
- 4:55I would try to take away your grief. But, as it
- 4:59is, my grief remains no matter how I defend myself. And it
- 5:04does not help if I refuse to speak.
- 5:08O God, You have ground me down and devastated my family.
- 5:12You have reduced me to skin and bones, as proof, they say,
- 5:16of my sins. God hates me and tears angrily at
- 5:20my flesh. He gnashes his teeth at me and pierces me with
- 5:24his eyes. People jeer and laugh at me. They slap
- 5:28my cheek in contempt. A mob gathers against me.
- 5:32God has handed me over to sinners. He has tossed me into
- 5:36the hands of the wicked. I was living quietly until
- 5:40he broke me apart. He took me by the neck and dashed me to
- 5:43pieces. Then he set me up as his target.
- 5:47His archers surrounded me and his arrows pierced me without mercy.
- 5:52The ground is wet with my blood. Again and again he smashed
- 5:56me, charging at me like a warrior. Here I sit in
- 6:00sackcloth. I have surrendered and I sit in the dust.
- 6:04My eyes are red with weeping. Darkness covers my
- 6:07eyes. Yet I am innocent and my prayer is
- 6:11pure. O earth, Do not conceal my
- 6:15blood. Let it cry out on my behalf.
- 6:18Even now my witness is in heaven. My Advocate
- 6:23is there on high. My friends scorn me, but I pour out my tears
- 6:26to God. Oh, that someone would mediate between God
- 6:30and me as a person mediates between friends!
- 6:34For soon I must go down that road from which I will never return.
- 6:39My spirit is crushed, and I am near death. The grave
- 6:43is ready to receive me. I am surrounded by mockers.
- 6:47I watch how bitterly they taunt me. You must
- 6:51defend my innocence, O God, since no one else will stand up for me.
- 6:55You have closed their minds to understanding, but do not let them triumph.
- 7:00They denounce their companions for their own advantage. So let
- 7:04their children faint with hunger. God has made a mockery of
- 7:08me among the people. They spit in my face.
- 7:12My eyes are dim with weeping, and I am but a shadow of
- 7:16my former self. The upright are astonished when they see me.
- 7:20The innocent are aroused against the ungodly.
- 7:25The righteous will move onward and forward, and those with pure hearts
- 7:29will become stronger and stronger. As for all of
- 7:33you, come back and try again, but I will not find a wise man among
- 7:37you. My days are over, my hopes have disappeared,
- 7:42my heart's desires are broken. They say that night
- 7:46is day and day is night. How they pervert the truth!
- 7:50I might go to the grave and make my bed in darkness,
- 7:53and I might call the grave my father and the worm my
- 7:57my mother and my sister. But where then is my hope?
- 8:00Can anyone find it? No, my hope
- 8:04will go down with me to the grave. We will rest together in
- 8:08the dust. Then Bildad
- 8:12the Shuhite replied, How long before you stop talking? Speak sense
- 8:16if you want us to answer. Do you think we are cattle? Do you think
- 8:20we have no intelligence? You may tear your hair out in
- 8:23anger, But will that cause the earth to be abandoned? Will it make the
- 8:27rocks fall from a cliff? The truth remains that the light
- 8:32of the wicked will be snuffed out. The sparks of their fire will
- 8:35not glow. The light in their tent will grow dark.
- 8:39The lamp hanging above them will be quenched. The confident
- 8:44stride of the wicked will be shortened. Their own schemes will be their
- 8:48downfall. The wicked walk into a net.
- 8:51They fall into a pit that's been dug in the path.
- 8:55A trap grabs them by the heel. A noose tightens
- 8:58around them. A snare lies hidden in the ground.
- 9:02A rope lies coiled on their path.
- 9:05Terrors surround the wicked and trouble them at every step.
- 9:09Their vigor is depleted by hunger, and calamity waits for them
- 9:14to stumble. Disease eats their skin. Death devours
- 9:17their limbs. They are torn from the security of their tent,
- 9:21and they are brought down to the King of Terrors. The home of the
- 9:25wicked will disappear beneath a fiery barrage of
- 9:28burning sulfur. Their roots
- 9:32will dry up and their branches will wither. All memory
- 9:35of their existence will perish from the earth.
- 9:38No one will remember them. They will be thrust from
- 9:42light into darkness, driven from the world.
- 9:45They will have neither children nor grandchildren nor
- 9:49any survivor in their home country. People in the west
- 9:53are appalled at their fate; people in the east are horrified.
- 9:58They will say, this was the home of a wicked person, the place of one
- 10:01who rejected God. Then Job
- 10:05spoke again, how long will you torture me? How long will you
- 10:09try to break me with your words? 10 times now you have
- 10:12meant to insult me. You should be ashamed of dealing with
- 10:16me so harshly. And even if I have sinned,
- 10:20that is my concern and not yours. You are trying
- 10:23to overcome me using my humiliation as evidence of my sin.
- 10:27But it is God who has wronged me. I cannot defend myself,
- 10:32for I am like a city under siege. I cry out for
- 10:35help, but no one hears me. I protest, but there is
- 10:39no justice. God has blocked my way and plunged
- 10:43my path into darkness. He has stripped me of my
- 10:47honor and removed the crown from my head. He has demolished
- 10:51me on every side, and I am finished. He has destroyed my hope.
- 10:55His fury burns against me; He counts me as an enemy.
- 10:59His troops advance; they build up roads to attack
- 11:02me. They camp all around my tent. My relatives
- 11:07stay far away, and my friends have turned against me.
- 11:10My neighbors and my close friends are all gone. The members
- 11:14of my household have forgotten me. The servant
- 11:18girls consider me a stranger. I am like a foreigner to them.
- 11:22I call my servant, but he doesn't come. I even plead
- 11:26with him. My breath is repulsive to my wife.
- 11:30I am loathsome to my own family; even young children
- 11:33despise me. When I stand to speak, they turn their backs
- 11:38on me. My close friends abhor me; those I loved have
- 11:41turned against me. I have been reduced to skin and bones
- 11:45and have escaped death by the skin of my teeth.
- 11:49Have mercy on me, my friends, have mercy, for the hand of God has struck
- 11:53me. Why must you persecute me? As God does?
- 11:58Why aren't you satisfied with my anguish?
- 12:02Oh, that my words could be written! Oh, that they could be
- 12:05inscribed on a monument carved with an iron chisel
- 12:10and filled with lead, engraved forever in the rock!
- 12:13But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives and that
- 12:17He will stand upon the earth at last.
- 12:22And after my body has decayed, yet in my body I will see
- 12:26God. I will see him for myself. Yes, I will see him with
- 12:30my own eyes. I am overwhelmed at
- 12:34the thought. How dare you go on persecuting me, saying it's
- 12:39his own fault! I warn you, you yourselves are in
- 12:42danger of punishment for your attitude. Then you will know that
- 12:46there is judgment.
- 12:511 Corinthians 16:1-24.
- 12:56Now about the money being collected for the Christians in Jerusalem.
- 13:00You Corinthians should follow the same procedures I gave to the
- 13:04churches in Galatia. On every Lord's Day,
- 13:08each of you should put aside some amount of money in relation to
- 13:11what you have earned and save it for this offering.
- 13:15Don't wait until I get there and then try to collect it
- 13:18all at once. When I come, I will write letters of
- 13:22recommendation for the messengers you chose to deliver your
- 13:25gift to Jerusalem. And if it seems appropriate
- 13:29for me also to go along, then we can travel together.
- 13:33I am coming to visit you after I have been to Macedonia,
- 13:37for I am planning to travel through Macedonia.
- 13:41It could be that I will stay a while with you, perhaps all
- 13:44winter, and then you can send me on my way to the next
- 13:48destination. This time I don't want to make just a short
- 13:52visit and then go right on. I want to come and stay a while,
- 13:56if the Lord will let me. In the meantime, I will be staying here
- 13:59at Ephesus until the festival of Pentecost,
- 14:03for there is a wide-open door for a great work here. And many people
- 14:08are responding. But there are many who oppose me.
- 14:13When Timothy comes, treat him with respect. He is
- 14:16doing the Lord's work just as I am. Don't let anyone
- 14:20despise him. Send him on his way with your blessings when he
- 14:24returns to me. I am looking forward to seeing him soon along
- 14:29with the other brothers. Now, about our brother
- 14:33Apollos. I urged him to join the other brothers when they
- 14:36visit you, but he was not willing to come right now. He will
- 14:41be seeing you later when the time is right. Be on guard,
- 14:44stand true to what you believe, be courageous,
- 14:49be strong, and everything you do must be
- 14:52done with love. You know that Stephanas and his
- 14:56household were the first to become Christians in Greece.
- 15:00And they are spending their lives in service to other Christians.
- 15:07I urge you, dear brothers and sisters, to respect them fully and
- 15:11others like them who serve with such devotion.
- 15:14I am so glad that Stephanas, Fortunatus, and Achaeus
- 15:19have come here. They have been making up for the help you weren't here
- 15:23to give me. They have been a wonderful
- 15:27encouragement to me, as they have been to you too.
- 15:30You must give proper honor to all who serve so well.
- 15:34The churches here in the province of Asia greet you heartily
- 15:37in the Lord, along with Aquila and Priscilla and all the
- 15:41others who gather in their home for church meetings.
- 15:45All the brothers and sisters here have asked me to greet you for them.
- 15:49Greet each other in Christian love.
- 15:53Here is my greeting, which I write with my own hand.
- 15:56Paul. If anyone does not love the Lord, that person
- 16:01is cursed. Our Lord come. May the
- 16:05grace of the Lord Jesus be with you. My love to all of
- 16:09you in Christ Jesus.
- 16:19Psalm 40:1-10. I waited
- 16:22patiently for the Lord to help me, and He turned to me and heard
- 16:26my cry. He lifted me out of the pit of despair,
- 16:30out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid
- 16:33ground and steadied me as I walked along.
- 16:36He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of
- 16:40praise to our God. Many will see what He has done and
- 16:44be astounded. They will put their trust in the Lord, Oh,
- 16:48the joys of those who trust the Lord, who have no confidence in
- 16:52the proud or in those who worship idols!
- 16:59O Lord my God, you have done many miracles
- 17:02for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list.
- 17:06If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would
- 17:10never come to the end of them.
- 17:14You take no delight in sacrifices or offerings.
- 17:17Now that You have made me listen, I finally understand.
- 17:22You don't require burnt offerings or sin offerings.
- 17:25Then I said, Look, I have come, and this has been written about me
- 17:29in Your scroll. I take joy in doing Your
- 17:33will, my God, for Your law is written on
- 17:37my heart. I have told all Your
- 17:41people about Your justice. I have not been afraid to speak out,
- 17:45as You, O Lord, well know. I have not kept this good
- 17:48news hidden in my heart. I have talked about Your faithfulness and saving
- 17:53power. I have told everyone in the great assembly
- 17:57of Your unfailing love and faithfulness.
- 18:04Proverbs 22:1.
- 18:07Choose a good reputation over great riches, for being held
- 18:12in high esteem is better than having silver or gold.
- 18:16I'd like to speak to you today from our reading from the Book of Job,
- 18:20and the eternal question that people
- 18:24have asked over the ages is, why do good people
- 18:28suffer? Why does God allow suffering
- 18:33in our lives? And Job is being very transparent
- 18:38and honest with God as he cries out to
- 18:42God and brings his charges before him.
- 18:46He is blaming God in a sense, bringing accusations
- 18:51against him, saying, this is you. You have allowed these
- 18:55terrible things to happen to me. He's lost his children.
- 19:00He's lost his home and his resources,
- 19:03his animals. He's sick. He's been struck with some
- 19:07kind of disease that covers his entire body.
- 19:10He is really in a lot of pain.
- 19:14And then while his spirit is crushed
- 19:18and he's near death, he's got some friends who come along and
- 19:22who are making matters worse, rubbing salt in the wound,
- 19:25so to speak. And who are blaming Job and saying, this is because
- 19:29you've sinned. This is why you're suffering. You have sinned.
- 19:32It's quite obvious. Your body is wasting away, and that is
- 19:37a sign of your sin.
- 19:41And so Job is having this conversation not only with God
- 19:44but with his friends, and he says to them, how long are you going to
- 19:48torture me? How long will you try to break me with your words?
- 19:54And he is just having quite
- 19:58a difficult time. So,
- 20:01how do we handle it? What is to be our response
- 20:05and our understanding when we go through suffering
- 20:10the way Job did? Whether it is a suffering of
- 20:13the physical body with a health setback,
- 20:18Whether it's a financial setback,
- 20:21whether it's a divorce or a death in the family,
- 20:27how are we to view suffering?
- 20:31It goes back to the beginning of the book of Job, and we look
- 20:34at why. Why is Job going through all this suffering?
- 20:37Job was a righteous man. He was not
- 20:41wicked or evil. He feared God. But there was a conversation that
- 20:45happened in heaven, and Satan came into
- 20:49the presence of God and he said, oh, the only reason Job
- 20:52fears you is because you have put a hedge of protection all around him.
- 20:56But take that hedge of protection away, allow me to
- 20:59afflict him, and then he will curse
- 21:03you and die. And so, God gives permission
- 21:07to Satan to begin to afflict Job
- 21:12because it's a test. It's a test of Job's
- 21:16heart. God believes— the
- 21:20Lord believes that Job is going to stay faithful and
- 21:24continue to cling to God and to follow Him no
- 21:29matter what his circumstances, whereas the devil believes,
- 21:33oh well, take away all of his blessings and his abundance
- 21:38and the favor you have on his life, and his heart will turn away from
- 21:41you. That's the test.
- 21:46So sometimes afflictions and sufferings come because
- 21:50we are being tested.
- 21:54Now, are we right? Some people
- 21:58do blame God when bad things happen— when their child dies of
- 22:02leukemia, when their spouse goes off into an adulterous affair and
- 22:05it ends in a divorce, and they have cried out
- 22:09and pleaded and interceded for that person to return
- 22:13and to come back to the marriage and for God to restore the marriage,
- 22:16and then it doesn't happen, or that person dies,
- 22:20and you pleaded and interceded for them to be healed,
- 22:25and ultimately they die. Some people, they do blame
- 22:28God, and they walk away from God. They blame Him. They accuse
- 22:32Him. So why do these things
- 22:36happen? Yes, God is ultimately in
- 22:40control. He is in charge. He is sovereign. He is El Elyon.
- 22:46But our afflictions and our sufferings come
- 22:50from the enemy, come from Satan. Satan is the one
- 22:54who brings the sin into the world. When we suffer because of
- 22:58sin, the sin done against us by another person,
- 23:01That's the enemy at work. When we
- 23:05suffer because of a human illness,
- 23:09again, God is sovereign. He allows things to happen.
- 23:13Nothing happens to us that hasn't been filtered through His hands.
- 23:18But sometimes we can give the enemy a permission slip
- 23:23if we have a sin in our own life.
- 23:28Whether it's pornography or lust or selfishness or greed or
- 23:32anger or fear, that opens the door and gives
- 23:36a permission slip to the enemy to afflict us.
- 23:40And so even when we go back to Job in the
- 23:44earlier chapters, we see that Job was afraid
- 23:48for his children. He was afraid
- 23:51that God was that something would happen to them. And so out
- 23:55of fear, he did daily sacrifices for them,
- 23:58and that fear gave an open door and
- 24:03a permission slip for the enemy to begin to attack.
- 24:07So one thing to check in your own heart: have
- 24:12you given any permission slips to the enemy? Is there
- 24:17any unconfessed sin in your life that
- 24:21you need to deal with or address.
- 24:27So if you are trying to control everything,
- 24:32control your family and control
- 24:36who your children marry and who your children interact with, or control—
- 24:42that's a lack of faith. You're not trusting God. You are not yielding
- 24:46and surrendering to God about things.
- 24:51Maybe it is idolatry, a form
- 24:54of idolatry. Are you putting your energy, your resource,
- 24:58and your time more into the screens than
- 25:01you are into the Word of God?
- 25:05Are you spending more time slaving away,
- 25:08working long hours at a job for the paycheck
- 25:12and for the 401, and God just gets your
- 25:16leftovers of your time and energy.
- 25:19Those are all idols of the heart, and idols are
- 25:23very, very, uh, they're a huge
- 25:27barrier between you and God. So the
- 25:33Lord does allow us to suffer, and there's different reasons
- 25:36for suffering. Sometimes we bring it on ourselves if we have allowed sin
- 25:40into our life. That gives the enemy a permission slip
- 25:45to afflict. Sometimes the sin has been done against
- 25:49us by another person, and we are then challenged to
- 25:53forgive that person and not allow a root of bitterness to
- 25:57take over. And sometimes there just is no easy
- 26:01answer. Why did that child die of leukemia at
- 26:05such a young age? Why did those people
- 26:09die in such a horrible manner on October 7th?
- 26:15Innocent civilians, Holocaust survivors,
- 26:19elderly, children, women.
- 26:24There's no easy answer. And yet
- 26:28it's a test. And ultimately,
- 26:32to pass the test, we must have our faith in God and trust him.
- 26:36We must trust Him. Not accuse
- 26:40Him. Not blame Him. But trust Him.
- 26:44And to simply say, Lord, I do not understand why this terrible thing has happened.
- 26:49It makes no sense to me, and it breaks my heart.
- 26:54But Lord, I choose to trust You no matter
- 26:57what. I choose to follow You and to walk
