- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37We preach forgiveness of sins through the death, burial and
- 0:41resurrection and shed blood of Jesus Christ.
- 0:45But how do we live out this forgiveness?
- 0:48It says in the Beatitudes, blessed are the peacemakers, for
- 0:51they shall be called children of God, a peacemaker, someone who
- 0:56can step between two warring parties.
- 0:59The peacemaker initiates reconciliation when others have
- 1:03wronged them. The peacemaker is quick to
- 1:05repent when they have wounded others.
- 1:09You must have seen this. When 2 folks get into a heated
- 1:11debate, there's usually someone else who steps in trying to
- 1:14smooth things over and bring a little peace to the situation.
- 1:18Today, Pastor Clark has an inspiring message for you about
- 1:22the importance of being a peacemaker.
- 1:25Why not be the spark that encourages others to let go and
- 1:29move on? Arguments rarely lead to
- 1:32anything positive, but when you embrace forgiveness, you open
- 1:36the door for God to work through you in incredible ways.
- 1:40Now here's Pastor Clark in the book of Acts Chapter 15 as he
- 1:44continues his message ministry leadership fallout.
- 1:48It's interesting when Paul and Barnabas started having problems
- 1:51about John Mark, that they didn't say, well, you know,
- 1:54first of all, we should pray about this together.
- 1:58We should get some input from some of the other brothers that
- 2:00we just are with here in Jerusalem.
- 2:02How do we deal with this conflict in our relationship?
- 2:06We've been together all these years.
- 2:07God's used us. Many people have come to know
- 2:10Christ, and now we're getting mad and our pride is in the way
- 2:14and we're not allowing the Spirit of God to control our
- 2:17hearts. So there was much dispute.
- 2:20This wasn't a simple issue here, and there was problems between
- 2:27both of them in their hearts at this time.
- 2:30So you might say, well, who is wrong in this contention?
- 2:33Was it Paul or was it Barnabas more than the other person?
- 2:38Or was it both of them together? This confrontation became so
- 2:44sharp that they actually stopped on ministry together.
- 2:50And this happens in just about any kind of church you've
- 2:53probably ever been in. You see people that used to be
- 2:57there that served, that loved one another.
- 2:59They're no longer there. Or you see the doors shut of
- 3:02churches that used to be very vibrant.
- 3:04But because of contention and arguments and inability to be
- 3:08reconciled, the work of God is is thwarted and and destroyed.
- 3:13And we know who's behind all that.
- 3:15It's the evil one who wants to scatter the sheep, destroy your
- 3:19life as a Christian, destroy the integrity of the body of Christ,
- 3:23and close churches down. This heated disagreement, this
- 3:28difference of opinion was basically a difference of
- 3:32opinion. Paul didn't like John Mark for
- 3:35whatever reason anymore, didn't want to give him a chance.
- 3:39Barnabas was related to John Mark and he had a heart for him.
- 3:43He saw the potential in him. What's interesting is in spite
- 3:47of everything that happened in this section of Scripture,
- 3:50eventually John Mark was reconciled to Paul.
- 3:54And Paul said later on in one of his epistles, please send John,
- 3:58he's needful to me. And so there was that beauty of
- 4:02reconciliation. Eventually it tells us in
- 4:05Proverbs 1310, Only by pride cometh contention, but with the
- 4:10well advised is wisdom. And so we see here that there's
- 4:14pride in the Apostle Paul's life and there's pride also in
- 4:19Barnabas life. God tells us in the book of
- 4:23Proverbs, chapter 6, verse 16 through 19, these six things the
- 4:28Lord hates. Yeah, they are an abomination
- 4:31unto him, a proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent
- 4:36blood, a heart that devises wicked imaginations, feet that
- 4:40be swift and running to mischief, a false witness that
- 4:45speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among the
- 4:48brethren. So we see this disagreement
- 4:51between people, in this instance, Paul and Barnabas,
- 4:54leaders of the church. I was thinking as I was studying
- 4:58this, what scriptures did they have access to in regard to
- 5:04dealing with conflict up until this point?
- 5:07Well, we know that Jesus taught clearly in the Beatitudes how
- 5:11we're to live out our faith and how we're to live in regard to
- 5:16conflict that arises in our life.
- 5:19The Beatitudes were responsible to help us to understand how to
- 5:23have a blessed and a happy life. It says blessed are the poor in
- 5:28spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of God.
- 5:32Being poor in spirit is to be humble, to acknowledge our own
- 5:36shortcomings, and to have humility in the opposition of
- 5:42pride, the sin that comes before the fall.
- 5:46Humility is always rooted in forgiveness and this desire to
- 5:51be at peace. That's the first beatitude that
- 5:55Christ gave. This is how he has been toward
- 5:58us. Jesus, the lover of my soul.
- 6:03Jesus, I will never let you go. You've taken me from the miry
- 6:07clay. You lifted me up.
- 6:11And the Lord wants us to be this way with one another.
- 6:14And we all fall so short in actually doing this this
- 6:19morning. I'm sure there's not one of us
- 6:21here who has not experienced conflict in our lives, whether
- 6:25it's in our marriages, with our children, our family, our
- 6:29neighbors, our Co laborers, in the ministry, at work, it's
- 6:33everywhere. And unfortunately, I find that
- 6:37conflict is never really dealt with in a biblical way.
- 6:40Usually it could be someone in the church that's upset about
- 6:44something, about someone who said something or did something,
- 6:49and they decide they're not going to go to the church
- 6:51anymore because one person maybe didn't say hi to them or didn't
- 6:55smile at them or wasn't pleasant toward them.
- 6:58I mean, we're all so self focused unfortunately, and we're
- 7:02all so easily offended. The Bible tells us that love is
- 7:06not easily offended, but we unfortunately, outside of having
- 7:10the love of God working in our life, we get offended over the
- 7:14most ridiculous things, don't we?
- 7:16Sometimes people won't talk in a family for years and they can't
- 7:20even remember at times why they don't talk anymore because it's
- 7:24such a stupid thing. Well, why didn't you talk to
- 7:26your dad all these years or your mom or whatever?
- 7:29Well, to be honest with you, I can't remember.
- 7:31I just knew we fought about something, we were upset and I
- 7:34can't even remember what it is anymore.
- 7:36Isn't that sad? And so the Lord looks at these
- 7:39things and wonders, you know, how can we call ourselves as
- 7:42followers and we behave this way?
- 7:45Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.
- 7:49Mourning is this morning over my own sins, the sins of the world
- 7:55and the suffering that other people go through that should
- 7:58break us and make us sad and make us prayerful.
- 8:02That we want to see situations change and reconcile first in
- 8:07our own heart with the Lord and then in our hearts with one
- 8:11another and then our hearts in this broken world.
- 8:14If we as believers can't forgive one another in this world, how
- 8:18in the world can we reach lost pagans and people that are
- 8:22really out there that are doing everything that would offend us
- 8:26as human beings? How can we have love in our
- 8:29hearts to take the gospel, the people that really need Jesus,
- 8:33if we can't live the gospel with one another as Christians?
- 8:37There's a movie coming out in February called The Jesus
- 8:40Revolution, and it's on the history of the Calvary Chapel
- 8:44movement. Kelsey Grammar, the guy that
- 8:46played and cheers, you remember him.
- 8:48He plays a part of Chuck Smith of all people.
- 8:51And but anyway, this is a phenomenal film about this
- 8:55little church called Calvary Chapel that was dying because of
- 8:58religion and self righteousness and all the suits and the ties.
- 9:02And everybody thought that because of the way they looked
- 9:04outwardly, they were acceptable God.
- 9:07Inwardly, hippies started coming to this church because they were
- 9:10in desperate need of a savior. They were broken people.
- 9:13Their lives were messed up and ruined because of sin.
- 9:16Chuck didn't know how to deal with it when they started coming
- 9:18in. And some of the wealthy people
- 9:20in the church said, if these kind of people come to our
- 9:22church, the people that support this church financially will no
- 9:26longer be in this church. Chuck took a deep breath and
- 9:29swallowed and said I understand but he didn't know what to do
- 9:33and finally this one young hippie came to him and looked
- 9:36him straight in the eye and said.
- 9:37Pastor Chuck someone has to be willing to love people that are
- 9:43not easy to love. Someone has to be willing to
- 9:47give them a chance and invite them in in spite of the way they
- 9:50look and the way they dress and the things they've done.
- 9:54Chuck heard this young man started getting choked up,
- 9:57excuse himself, moved away to go wash his hands at the sink,
- 10:00thinking about what was being said to him by this hippie who
- 10:05had just recently become saved. He then made the decision that
- 10:09he was going to open the doors to whoever wanted to come into
- 10:13the church, regardless of the outcome.
- 10:15And he told the congregation that the door swings both ways.
- 10:19The door swings inwardly for those who are broken.
- 10:22For those who are easily offended, the door swings the
- 10:25other way for them to leave. And so some of those people got
- 10:28up and left and never came back. But what happened because of
- 10:32this brokenness in this one pastor's heart, which I need in
- 10:36my own life, as we all need, is to be at the point in our lives
- 10:41as Christians that we're not letting things get in the way of
- 10:44what's most important. And that's our relationship to
- 10:48Jesus and our love for one another.
- 10:51Jesus said by this people will know that you're my disciples,
- 10:56not by your understanding of doctrine, which is important, by
- 11:00the teaching of the Bible, which is also critically important,
- 11:04but he said by the love you have for one another, by this people
- 11:09will know you're my disciples. What would Barnabas and Saul
- 11:13say, Paul say to those who would ask them, Where's Barnabas now,
- 11:19Paul? What would they have said?
- 11:23Well, we had an argument and then the Christians would say,
- 11:25well, you guys are supposed to be leading us on how to be
- 11:28Christians and how to act as Christians, and you guys can't
- 11:31get along together anymore. That's a that's a bad situation,
- 11:36isn't it? It's not acceptable.
- 11:40The Bible doesn't go into great detail on this, but later on it
- 11:42goes into great detail and how Paul taught about dealing with
- 11:46conflict because I'm sure he never forgot about this
- 11:49situation that occurred in his life.
- 11:51It was a a mark in his ministry, a bad mark in his ministry.
- 11:56It says blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth.
- 12:00The meek are the humble people, obedient and submissive to the
- 12:04will of God. Jesus was meek and humble of
- 12:08heart, it tells us in Matthew 1129.
- 12:10He's learned of me, for I am meek and lowly of heart, and you
- 12:14will find rest into your soul. The only way that we can become
- 12:19like Christ is to become humble and to admit our mistakes and
- 12:25our wrongdoings and ask for forgiveness to those we have
- 12:31perhaps hurt and offended. Blessed are the merciful, for
- 12:35they shall receive mercy. And boy do we need mercy.
- 12:40Lord have mercy on us, the public and said, Lord have mercy
- 12:44upon me, this Sinner. He wasn't judging the
- 12:47self-righteous person that didn't think he had any
- 12:50problems. He was looking at his own need
- 12:53of mercy. It tells us in the book of
- 12:57Leviticus, you shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge
- 13:02against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbors
- 13:06yourself. I am the Lord.
- 13:08That's straight from the Scriptures that we're to love
- 13:12our neighbors. We love ourselves.
- 13:16Ephesians 431 and 32 says, And let all bitterness and wrath and
- 13:22clamor and evil speaking be put away from you.
- 13:26Anybody ever have any problem with any of those things?
- 13:30Be kind, tender hearted, forgiving one another, even as
- 13:36God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
- 13:39I mean, who am I to hold a grudge or be bitter or
- 13:46unforgiving against anybody for what the Lord has done for me
- 13:51and what He's done for you? This is the heart of the church,
- 13:57Forgiveness. We preach forgiveness of sins
- 14:02through the death, burial and resurrection and shed blood of
- 14:05Jesus Christ. But how do we live out this
- 14:08forgiveness? It says in the Beatitudes,
- 14:11blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of
- 14:14God, a peacemaker, someone who can step between two warring
- 14:19parties. The peacemaker initiates
- 14:23reconciliation when others have wronged them.
- 14:26The peacemaker is quick to repent when they have wounded
- 14:29others. So we're all to be peacemakers,
- 14:32aren't we? Christ is the ultimate
- 14:34peacemaker. He stands between US and God the
- 14:37Father. And through what he's done on
- 14:39the cross for us, he made it possible for us to not be at war
- 14:44with God anymore because of our sin in Jesus own words in John
- 14:501335. By this all people will know
- 14:53that you are my disciples if you have loved one for another.
- 14:57I struggle at times when people come to our church for the first
- 15:01time. I find out like, hey, nice to
- 15:04see you. Where you from where you've
- 15:05been? I always love it when they say,
- 15:06well, we moved and we used to go to a really good church in some
- 15:09other state and we're here now and we want to come here because
- 15:11the Bible's taught. I love that.
- 15:14But if they're at the door and says, well, let me tell you, we
- 15:16were at such and such a church and the pastor did this or I
- 15:20don't want to hear any of that because I'm thinking it won't be
- 15:23too long before they're leaving here saying that about me,
- 15:26right? I mean, none of us are perfect,
- 15:28right? And there's always going to be
- 15:30something, no matter what church you go to, where you find that
- 15:33there's going to be some kind of issue you got to either deal
- 15:35with or, you know, not deal with, I guess.
- 15:39And so when does the migration of Christians begin to end?
- 15:45Probably not until Christ comes and sets up his Kingdom on earth
- 15:48and he rules and he's the pastor and we're sitting at his feet.
- 15:52But when would end this migration from one church to the
- 15:56next church to the next church to the next church?
- 15:59How many churches do we have to move to before we realize that
- 16:02the problem isn't really the church?
- 16:04The problem is my own heart, usually, and how I deal with
- 16:07conflict or don't deal with conflict, and then trying to
- 16:12work out my own salvation with fear and trembling along with
- 16:17everyone else. To learn to give people grace or
- 16:20give them space to make mistakes and to not right away want to
- 16:26squash them or slander them or put them down, but to figure out
- 16:30ways to help people and to build them up.
- 16:33The works of the flesh in Galatians 519.
- 16:36And Paul wrote this himself in the book of Galatians.
- 16:42This describes the fallenness of our sinful nature, Hatred,
- 16:48contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish
- 16:53ambitions, dissensions. And this is disagreements that
- 16:56lead to discord and distrust among one another.
- 17:01So here's Paul exhorting the church in Galatia of the
- 17:06believers, not walking in the flesh, which we do at times.
- 17:11He had to be reminded of the contention he had with Barnabas,
- 17:15right? He lived this himself.
- 17:19He failed. He made a mistake as well.
- 17:23Versus this beauty of the fruit of the Spirit being filled with
- 17:28the Holy Spirit where there's peace, long-suffering, that
- 17:31means patience, hanging in there, kindness, gentleness and
- 17:35self-control. So as God's servants, we all
- 17:38fail. We struggle with pride and
- 17:41unforgiveness and fractured relationships and homework,
- 17:44family, neighbors, church. How does Jesus treat us when we
- 17:50fail in these relationships? I think of one of the greatest
- 17:55examples of a failed relationship and ministry is
- 17:59Simon Peter, who became the great apostle Peter whenever he
- 18:04was a rookie, being trained by the Lord in dealing with people
- 18:08and ministry and the gospel. And so Peter thought he had it
- 18:14all together. He thought he would never do
- 18:17anything that would offend his Lord or let him down.
- 18:22And the Lord speaks to Peter shortly before he's eventually
- 18:27going to deny him three times. And the Lord says in Luke 22,
- 18:33verse 31, Simon, Simon, Satan has asked for you that he may
- 18:38sift you as wheat. That means to shake someone
- 18:42apart and break a person down. That's what the enemy wants to
- 18:46do to you. He wants to shake you so hard
- 18:49and break you down so much that you don't want to have anything
- 18:52to do with Christians, church, the Bible, anything.
- 18:57You're done. And I've been close to being
- 19:00there at times. Anybody else ever been close to
- 19:03being there? Probably every one of us, if
- 19:05we're honest. But where do we go?
- 19:11Where do we go? We go to the Lord.
- 19:17This picture of the sifting is they use these big large
- 19:24strainers to shift sift the wheat and the grain as it was
- 19:29shaken violently. The dirt and other impurities
- 19:32that clung to the grain during the threshing process would
- 19:36separate from the good usable grain.
- 19:40It's good. And the Lord, in his wisdom,
- 19:45Satan is not someone who does something independent of God's
- 19:50authority is. It's good to know that.
- 19:54So the Lord knows and allows the enemy to do what he needs to do
- 19:59in order to bring us to our senses.
- 20:03The enemy's goal is to destroy us and to cause us not to want
- 20:06to follow the Lord. But when God's involved in this
- 20:09process, we are broken and we're more prepared to do what it is
- 20:16that God's called us to do. So Satan wants to crush us and
- 20:21wreck our faith. The good news is that Jesus
- 20:23speaks in Luke 22, verse 32, the next verse he says, but I've
- 20:28prayed for you that your face should not fail.
- 20:31And when you have returned to me, strengthen your brethren.
- 20:34Isn't that beautiful? Everybody else at that time, if
- 20:37you and I were hanging out with Peter, I'm not going to listen
- 20:41to this guy. I'm not going to sit under his
- 20:43leadership. I reject his authority.
- 20:45You know what this guy did? He denied Jesus.
- 20:49That's like one thing everybody remembers with Peter.
- 20:52He denied Jesus. Well, which or who here has not
- 20:56denied the Lord one time and our witness by the way, we live DC
- 21:02Talk had a great song one time that talked about the reason
- 21:05people don't want to have anything to do with Christianity
- 21:09is because they say one thing, but they live something out
- 21:13that's completely different than what Jesus taught.
- 21:17So Jesus says I prayed for you that your face should not fail.
- 21:23And when you've returned to me, strengthen your brethren.
- 21:26So there's this picture all the time of the opportunity to
- 21:29repent, to get things right, not to see our ministries destroyed,
- 21:36but to see them reconciled and to be renewed and to be
- 21:38refreshed and to be more powerful and dynamic than they
- 21:42ever could have been without our feelings.
- 21:44Right. When we fail and we falter,
- 21:47that's when we're humbled. And when we're humbled, that's
- 21:50when God can begin to work for. God says he resists the proud,
- 21:54but he gives grace to the humble.
- 21:57Paul and Barnabas needed grace in their problem and their
- 22:00conflict. We all need grace and prayer and
- 22:04the power of the Holy Spirit to be reconciled first to God and
- 22:08then one to another, to be at peace again, to make amends, to
- 22:13be forgiving. And this is so important because
- 22:19God allows these things to be put in the Bible that we might
- 22:23stop and think and reflect and say, well, how does this
- 22:27teaching today impact my life personally?
- 22:32What is it that God wants to show me in regard to my need of
- 22:36reconciliation with others? And even you today, you might
- 22:41have been in this church a long time and you might be offended
- 22:44of something that we as pastors or elders have done that we
- 22:48don't even know about. If you could come to us and talk
- 22:51to us and help us to be better pastors, that would be the best
- 22:54thing to do. Don't give up on us.
- 22:59Give us a chance like Jesus gave Peter a chance.
- 23:02When you've returned, strengthen the brethren and whatever church
- 23:06you're affiliated with, whatever church you're committed to,
- 23:10whatever pastors and elders you sit under, I pray that you would
- 23:14pray for these men. They're just men like you.
- 23:17They're weak, they're not perfect.
- 23:20They're learning, they're growing in the grace and the
- 23:23knowledge of the Lord. They need your support, they
- 23:26need your prayer, they don't need your slander, and they
- 23:29certainly don't need you leaving the church over something that
- 23:33doesn't make sense. 3 reasons to leave a church RC Sproul said
- 23:39Financial propriety, sexual immorality and heresy.
- 23:45Most of the time when I talk to people that have gone from one
- 23:48church to the next has nothing to do with any of those things.
- 23:52It has something to do with something that's stupid.
- 23:54It doesn't make sense. We're so glad you joined us
- 23:58today on this edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 24:01Pastor Clark is teaching through the Book of Acts, which is the
- 24:04only book that chronicles the history of the early church
- 24:08immediately after Jesus's ascension.
- 24:11It gives us a front row seat to how the Gospel began to move
- 24:15outwards, starting in Jerusalem and reaching into the heart of
- 24:18the Roman Empire. In just three decades, a small
- 24:22group of frightened ordinary believers became a bold, spirit
- 24:26empowered movement that transformed the known world.
- 24:30Acts is not just a history lesson.
- 24:32It's a reminder of what God can do when His people are
- 24:35surrendered, obedient and filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 24:40Their perseverance still inspires us today.
- 24:44May we follow their example and live faithfully for Christ in
- 24:47our own time. We hope today's message
- 24:50encouraged you. Living Waters of Grace is a
- 24:53ministry of Calvary Chapel Westmoreland.
