Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: One of the first soundtracks I bought in 1986. I
- 0:02Speaker 1: bought the Top Gun soundtrack for that song. Oh, and
- 0:05Speaker 1: Take My Breath Away 2 was on there.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, that's a big song.
- 0:08Speaker 1: And it was October 1st, 1982 that the first compact
- 0:11Speaker 1: disc player went on sale. So it was how many
- 0:14Speaker 1: years ago today? $ 625, by the way, was the first
- 0:18Speaker 1: compact disc player. I didn't get one when they came out,
- 0:21Speaker 1: but I did get my first CD player, I think,
- 0:23Speaker 1: in 85. And then the first CD I ever bought...
- 0:27Speaker 1: Top Gun was a soundtrack, and the first seat I
- 0:29Speaker 1: ever bought was the car's greatest hits. Oh, wow.
- 0:32Speaker 2: You remember all this stuff?
- 0:33Speaker 1: In 85. And they came in a big, long box.
- 0:35Speaker 1: I don't know if you remember that.
- 0:37Speaker 2: They used to. Yeah, you're right.
- 0:39Speaker 1: It was a total waste of paper. Right.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Then they discovered that was a waste.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Yep. But they did that in the beginning.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Oh, because of the albums.
- 0:46Speaker 1: And they wanted to get, yeah, they wanted the CDs
- 0:48Speaker 1: to stick out.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:49Speaker 1: And get your attention.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:51Speaker 1: And they realized we're wasting a lot of paper.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Right. And I think the shelves were set up for
- 0:54Speaker 2: that at the time too, you know?
- 0:56Speaker 1: But man, October 1st, 1982, would you buy, if this
- 1:00Speaker 1: was 82, do you think $ 625? I know it was
- 1:04Speaker 1: a lot of money back then.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:05Speaker 1: But you think people were running to the stores to
- 1:07Speaker 1: get one? I don't know if people knew that technology
- 1:11Speaker 1: was there yet or if it was just going to
- 1:13Speaker 1: be a thing.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I don't know. Isn't it like today, like if you
- 1:16Speaker 2: want the latest tech, if that's what you're into?
- 1:18Speaker 1: I had a buddy of mine put a DAT player
- 1:21Speaker 1: in his car because he thought DAT players were going
- 1:23Speaker 1: to take over the world.
- 1:24Speaker 2: I thought DATs were only in radio.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Pretty much you only ended up in radio. Yeah.
- 1:29Speaker 2: That's like the only time I heard of it was
- 1:31Speaker 2: like starting to work in radio.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:33Speaker 2: A DAT player. Wow.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Can you remember your first CD? Or do you remember
- 1:36Speaker 1: one CD you had?
- 1:37Speaker 2: Well, like Sting stands out to me a lot.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Sting, okay.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Because I loved.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Did you like all the Police stuff too?
- 1:42Speaker 2: I was more into Sting.
- 1:44Speaker 1: When he went solo?
- 1:44Speaker 2: When he went solo. I told you Dream of the
- 1:46Speaker 2: Blue Turtles was like, for me, life-changing.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Great album.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Great album.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Yeah, but we're... Yeah. He's going out on... He's on
- 1:52Speaker 2: tour right now.
- 1:53Speaker 1: I'm sure he'll be back.
- 1:54Speaker 2: I should let him know I need to go see
- 1:56Speaker 2: him again. I saw him many times in concert. And
- 1:58Speaker 2: he's such a great guy.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, you could tell. We interviewed him not
- 2:01Speaker 1: too long ago.
- 2:02Speaker 2: With Shaggy.
- 2:03Speaker 1: With Shaggy. Yeah. And you could tell he's answered some
- 2:06Speaker 1: of these questions a million times, but he still does
- 2:08Speaker 1: it with poise, kindness, and tells a good story.
- 2:13Speaker 2: And he's really good because I think he puts up
- 2:15Speaker 2: with my fangirlness. Yeah, you're a true fan. Because that
- 2:18Speaker 2: tends to come out when he's around.
- 2:19Speaker 1: He's a good looking dude.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Of course he is. Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:23Speaker 1: So anyway, October 1st, first CD player went on sale.
- 2:26Speaker 1: And by the way, happy birthday to Walt Disney World.
- 2:29Speaker 1: It was October 1st, 1971. that Walt Disney World opened
- 2:34Speaker 1: in Florida. Oh, that's a happy day. And producer Kristen
- 2:37Speaker 1: wasn't born yet, but her spirit was in line. Yes.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Waiting to be born, to be there, 55 years old.
- 2:43Speaker 2: She was in Disney baby heaven waiting to come here.
- 2:46Speaker 1: I wonder what the price of a season pass was
- 2:50Speaker 1: back then. Because now an annual pass, I believe, is
- 2:54Speaker 1: a grand? No, or higher. How much? $ 1, 600. $ 1, 600 for
- 2:59Speaker 1: an annual pass to Disney. Because some people that live
- 3:01Speaker 1: in the New York area still buy the annual because
- 3:04Speaker 1: they get down there so much with the kids. It
- 3:06Speaker 1: pays for itself.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Yeah. You've got to go a lot of trips.
- 3:09Speaker 1: A lot of trips. Yeah. Then the airfare adds up.
- 3:12Speaker 2: There's that.
- 3:13Speaker 1: All right. So that's what's going on on this October 1st.
- 3:16Speaker 1: It's 106.7 Light FM.
