- 0:00Speaker 1: I don't like your attitude. You're sentenced to five to
- 0:02Speaker 1: ten years. It's one more thing I'm.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Strong and getty, one more thing.
- 0:09Speaker 1: You put back on the right track by stern judges.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Stay with us before we get to that. Do you
- 0:15Speaker 2: understand the new kickoff rules for the NFL, which the
- 0:18Speaker 2: season is beginning soon.
- 0:20Speaker 1: I did at one point I read about them, but
- 0:23Speaker 1: I can't remember.
- 0:24Speaker 2: I don't think you probably do or did, because I
- 0:27Speaker 2: just read this interview with a whole bunch of coaches
- 0:29Speaker 2: and they don't understand it, and they don't have any
- 0:32Speaker 2: idea how it's going to work out. Each team has
- 0:35Speaker 2: kind of got their own plans on how to deal
- 0:37Speaker 2: with the rules. Nobody's doing it in preseason. Nobody's like
- 0:41Speaker 2: implementing their plan. They're not because they don't want to
- 0:45Speaker 2: show people what their plan is until real game situations,
- 0:49Speaker 2: and so both the offense and the defense aren't really
- 0:51Speaker 2: doing what they plan to do in games with the
- 0:53Speaker 2: new kickoff thing. Before I get to that quickly, last
- 0:57Speaker 2: year the league had the lowest rate of return in
- 1:00Speaker 2: the one hundred and four year history of the NFL,
- 1:03Speaker 2: with only a little over a fifth of kicks run
- 1:06Speaker 2: back at all.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Yeah, and usually that's a mistake.
- 1:10Speaker 2: For instance, back in twenty ten, eighty percent of kicks
- 1:14Speaker 2: were returned. So we went from eighty percent not that
- 1:17Speaker 2: long ago, from kicks being returned to now twenty percent
- 1:19Speaker 2: of kicks being returned. And I thought, well, that's not good,
- 1:21Speaker 2: do you just because otherwise, what's kicking? It's nothing, it's
- 1:24Speaker 2: just an exercise. We might as well just right. It's
- 1:27Speaker 2: hard for mel It's like a ceremony. Yeah, it's not
- 1:30Speaker 2: part of the game. Yeah. So the new one, I
- 1:32Speaker 2: just read it through and I don't quite understand it.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Unlike previous kickoffs, it came alive when the kickers foot
- 1:37Speaker 2: struck the ball. The action begins. Now not until the
- 1:42Speaker 2: kickoff is touched or hits the turf in the landing zone,
- 1:45Speaker 2: which is a particular area which extends from the goal
- 1:47Speaker 2: line to the receiving team's twenty yard line the coverage team.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Exactly what the XFL has been doing or whatever alterna
- 1:55Speaker 1: league there is right now.
- 1:57Speaker 2: So you have to land the ball in that area. Yeah,
- 2:01Speaker 2: are are most NFL kicker is able to do that?
- 2:04Speaker 2: Put it somewhere between the goal line and the twenty
- 2:07Speaker 2: yard line. Oh, yeah, regularly s. Yeah, as opposed to
- 2:10Speaker 2: just trying to kick it clear out, click, clear off
- 2:13Speaker 2: on through.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Yeah, what's the sanction for busting it through the goal post?
- 2:17Speaker 1: End of the stands?
- 2:18Speaker 2: I can't remember they poking the eye. I don't know.
- 2:21Speaker 2: I don't know if the sanction is.
- 2:23Speaker 3: It's odd that'd be entertaining.
- 2:25Speaker 2: And any kick that doesn't reach the landing landing zone
- 2:28Speaker 2: results in the receiving team taking position at the forty
- 2:32Speaker 2: so that's quite the penalty. Wow, you don't want to
- 2:36Speaker 2: You don't want to have them starting at the forty,
- 2:38Speaker 2: so you'd really want to make sure your kicker can
- 2:40Speaker 2: land it in the landing zone. Anyway, I was reading
- 2:44Speaker 2: Harbor Jim Harbow. We loved when he was a San
- 2:46Speaker 2: Francisco forty nine er coach, and he's been successful everywhere
- 2:49Speaker 2: he's gone is now in LA as you know, and
- 2:53Speaker 2: he and a whole bunch of other coaches say, no,
- 2:55Speaker 2: we haven't shown what we're planning to do on both
- 2:57Speaker 2: ends of this yet, so it's completely wide open to
- 3:00Speaker 2: how that's going to be approached until the first real
- 3:03Speaker 2: games start, which I find interesting enough to make me
- 3:05Speaker 2: want to watch.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, it's it's different. Like I say, the alternate
- 3:10Speaker 1: League's been doing this for a while. I've seen video
- 3:12Speaker 1: of it.
- 3:13Speaker 2: But the idea of having that, the idea of having
- 3:15Speaker 2: an exciting play from the beginning of the game as
- 3:18Speaker 2: opposed to and the kickoffs, so the end zone, they'll
- 3:20Speaker 2: take over the twenty and we'll be back in four
- 3:22Speaker 2: minutes after these commercials.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Hardly worth watching. Absolutely, Yeah, you know there's something else
- 3:27Speaker 1: you wanted to do real quick here just about the NFL.
- 3:29Speaker 1: They still watch it quite a bit from the XFL,
- 3:32Speaker 1: believe it or not. The camera angles that you see
- 3:34Speaker 1: on TV now they stole all of those.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Yeah, that is the brilliance of competition. That's what happens
- 3:44Speaker 2: with competition. Lots of times it makes the Sometimes a
- 3:48Speaker 2: competition comes along, whatever it is, sport, food, car, whatever,
- 3:52Speaker 2: and it replaces the old one and kills it. But
- 3:54Speaker 2: sometimes it comes along and the existing model and co
- 4:00Speaker 2: ops the best stuff from the startup that goes away.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Happens all the time. And yeah, they were cool.
- 4:06Speaker 1: There was a time when American automakers were so lazy
- 4:09Speaker 1: and protected that the.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Cars were crap. Absolutely, you missed that occasion made him better.
- 4:15Speaker 2: You're young, American cars were absolute garbage for quite a
- 4:20Speaker 2: few years. And I hate saying that, but it's true. Huh, God,
- 4:23Speaker 2: I had a Ford Mustang. Could not have been a
- 4:26Speaker 2: bigger piece of crap if that was your intention. You know,
- 4:29Speaker 2: that was the year nineteen eighty eight.
- 4:31Speaker 4: Okay, So my dad for the longest time, and well,
- 4:34Speaker 4: right when I started driving, he's like, you're not getting
- 4:36Speaker 4: an American car.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Yeah, if you're from a certain era. Yeah, that was
- 4:40Speaker 2: a smart thing to do.
- 4:42Speaker 3: That makes sense.
- 4:43Speaker 1: No longer true. Your dad will factor into the next
- 4:46Speaker 1: story as well. I believe his honor of the judge.
- 4:48Speaker 1: A teenager on a field trip to see a Detroit
- 4:51Speaker 1: court ended up in jail clothes and handcuffs because a
- 4:54Speaker 1: judge said he didn't like her attitude. Judge Kenneth King
- 4:58Speaker 1: even asked other kids of the court room Tuesday whether
- 5:00Speaker 1: the sixteen year old girl should be taking a juvenile detention.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Let's see, she's part of a visit organized by the
- 5:08Speaker 1: Greening of Detroit, a nonprofit environmental group. For some reason,
- 5:11Speaker 1: it's probably more just education in general. But you notice
- 5:15Speaker 1: the girl falling asleep. You fall in my sleep, You
- 5:17Speaker 1: fall asleep in my courtroom. One more time, I'm gonna
- 5:19Speaker 1: put you in back, understood, judge said. According to a
- 5:21Speaker 1: video of his remarks, King then had the girl changing
- 5:24Speaker 1: into jail clothes and wear handcuffs. Was her whole attitude
- 5:28Speaker 1: in her old disposition that disturbed me, the judge told
- 5:30Speaker 1: local news. Want to get through to her, sure how
- 5:32Speaker 1: serious this is and how you were how you are
- 5:34Speaker 1: to conduct yourself inside of a court room.
- 5:37Speaker 2: So it wasn't just the falling the sleep, uh no, No. Indeed,
- 5:40Speaker 2: probably smart ass attitude and everything like that, because sometimes
- 5:43Speaker 2: if you're really tired, Oh it's kind of hard.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Maybe the kid is up all night taking care of
- 5:49Speaker 1: her siblings because you know, mom's at work and dad's
- 5:51Speaker 1: a drug addict or whatever, or.
- 5:52Speaker 2: The lawyers are just with their blah blah blah. It's
- 5:55Speaker 2: boring and it's hot in there, and it's like one
- 5:56Speaker 2: o'clock in the afternoon. My head just said problem.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Yeah, no kidding, said his honor. I'll do whatever needs
- 6:03Speaker 1: to be done to reach these kids and make sure
- 6:04Speaker 1: they don't end up in front of me. On the
- 6:08Speaker 1: other hand, the Greening of Detroit released a statement saying
- 6:10Speaker 1: the young lady was traumatized. Although the judge was trying
- 6:13Speaker 1: to teach a lesson of respect. His methods were unacceptable.
- 6:17Speaker 1: The group of students should simply have been asked to
- 6:19Speaker 1: leave the courtroom if he thought they were disrespectful. I'm
- 6:21Speaker 1: with the judge on this one, Absolutely with the judge.
- 6:25Speaker 1: The judge said, I wonder her to look. I wanted
- 6:29Speaker 1: this to look and feel very real to her, even
- 6:31Speaker 1: though there's probably no real chance of me putting her
- 6:33Speaker 1: in jail. That's my own version of scared straight.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Teach her a lesson.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that sort of thing. I think that's
- 6:44Speaker 1: a great idea. I mean, if you had a coup,
- 6:46Speaker 1: take out a night stick and give her a few licks,
- 6:49Speaker 1: all right, that would be too much. Yeah, just scared,
- 6:53Speaker 1: the idea of no, no, you come into my courtroom.
- 6:55Speaker 1: This is a different world than you've ever been in, sweetheart.
- 6:58Speaker 1: You don't want to be in here in front of
- 7:00Speaker 1: me for real?
- 7:01Speaker 2: Hey, no joke, A joke.
- 7:03Speaker 4: I think when I was either a freshman or a
- 7:05Speaker 4: sophomore in high school, I had a group of friends,
- 7:08Speaker 4: Thank you, gladys.
- 7:11Speaker 3: They were all guys.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Well okay, it was like three girls and like nine guys,
- 7:15Speaker 4: and we all hung out. We all lived in the
- 7:16Speaker 4: same area and we were getting in a little bit
- 7:19Speaker 4: of innocent trouble, you know, and one of my guy
- 7:23Speaker 4: friends peed on the side of the gymnasium during homecoming
- 7:28Speaker 4: and got caught. And so the next thing I know,
- 7:30Speaker 4: my dad's putting us through a scared straight program in
- 7:32Speaker 4: his courtroom.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Dad.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Dad, Yeah, I was the real cool kid that day.
- 7:38Speaker 3: Let me tell you. We're all sitting there. My dad's
- 7:40Speaker 3: just letting us have it.
- 7:41Speaker 4: And there's this one particular guy named dB who my
- 7:45Speaker 4: dad put in jail. It's either eight or nine times.
- 7:48Speaker 4: They still argue about it. My dad put him through
- 7:50Speaker 4: this program. And now dB was the head probation officer
- 7:54Speaker 4: for Alameda County in California, and he is totally My
- 7:57Speaker 4: parents went to his wedding.
- 7:59Speaker 3: He was at my wedding. He's family now.
- 8:01Speaker 4: So dB was there and he had this stack of
- 8:04Speaker 4: obituaries of all of his friends that had been killed
- 8:06Speaker 4: in gang violence and all of this stuff.
- 8:09Speaker 2: And he's going and killed in peeing accidents.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Yeah, peeing incidents.
- 8:14Speaker 4: And he went up to one of my friends and
- 8:16Speaker 4: said stand up, and my buddy stood up, and dB goes.
- 8:20Speaker 3: So I come to your house.
- 8:22Speaker 4: I kick your door down, and I'm telling you give me,
- 8:25Speaker 4: give me all your stuff.
- 8:26Speaker 3: I'm coming in there, and your house is mine. Now
- 8:28Speaker 3: what are you going to do?
- 8:29Speaker 4: Trying to show him that, you know, my friend wasn't
- 8:31Speaker 4: so big, and my buddy looks at him, goes, I'd
- 8:33Speaker 4: tell you to stop, and my dad just went, all right,
- 8:36Speaker 4: sit down.
- 8:37Speaker 3: The next thing I know.
- 8:38Speaker 4: He's like, you guys obviously aren't getting it, and he
- 8:40Speaker 4: took us all into the holding cells of the Oakland
- 8:43Speaker 4: Courthouse and put us each in the holding and three
- 8:47Speaker 4: of them were crying.
- 8:49Speaker 3: It was it was an experience.
- 8:51Speaker 4: But I will tell you none of those friends got
- 8:53Speaker 4: in trouble with the law, not one of them.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Were you there in the cells with ne'er Dowell's or
- 8:58Speaker 1: like on your own.
- 8:59Speaker 4: No apartments had their own holding areas for the trials
- 9:02Speaker 4: that were happening, and so my dad didn't have any
- 9:04Speaker 4: trials going on that day. So the cells were open,
- 9:06Speaker 4: but we were we were up there. They closed it,
- 9:08Speaker 4: they locked it, and they showed.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Us they'd give you a feeling.
- 9:12Speaker 4: Yeah, oh, lots of feelings. Yeah, we had. There were
- 9:15Speaker 4: some tears. There was one of the girls was so upset.
- 9:18Speaker 4: She was trying to get somebody to call her dad,
- 9:21Speaker 4: who was out, you know, out in the waiting area.
- 9:23Speaker 4: But those scared straight programs, when done properly, work sure.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Oh no, I don't know, work really well well.
- 9:29Speaker 1: And even if they work on ten percent of the kids,
- 9:32Speaker 1: that's a lot of kids who will have their future saved. Yeah.
- 9:35Speaker 2: So your friend who urinated on the school during homecoming
- 9:39Speaker 2: because of homecoming?
- 9:41Speaker 4: It was during the homecoming football game, okay, And we
- 9:44Speaker 4: were all running around and two of my buddies took
- 9:47Speaker 4: off and they came back laughing hysterically, and soon enough
- 9:51Speaker 4: security came and it turned out one of my guys.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Took Yeah, so it was ha ha ha ha. Isn't
- 9:57Speaker 2: public urination funny? And they found it's not.
- 10:01Speaker 4: They found out it really wasn't because they got in
- 10:03Speaker 4: trouble with the school and then his parents called my parents,
- 10:06Speaker 4: and my dad's like, that's it, you're coming to court,
- 10:09Speaker 4: and we all got roped into it. I'm thankful for it,
- 10:12Speaker 4: to be honest with.
- 10:13Speaker 2: You, I rarely did anything wrong, but that that teenager
- 10:17Speaker 2: desire to like break a rule and it's just so
- 10:21Speaker 2: fulfilling is an interesting part of.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Again, it's a rite of passage, establishing your independence. Yeah,
- 10:29Speaker 1: and then you figure out what to do with that independence,
- 10:32Speaker 1: and you realize pissing on schools is probably not at
- 10:35Speaker 1: the top of the list.
- 10:36Speaker 4: It was so dumb, It was so dumb, and they
- 10:39Speaker 4: thought it was the funniest damn thing they'd ever done.
- 10:42Speaker 1: So just the experience of being locked in a cage
- 10:45Speaker 1: was enough to freak your your friends out, even though
- 10:47Speaker 1: they knew they were getting out eventually.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:50Speaker 4: It was the mixture of dB telling his story and
- 10:52Speaker 4: then kind of not getting in our faces, but kind
- 10:55Speaker 4: of showing us like he was an actual gangbanger. And
- 10:59Speaker 4: if you want to go down this road where you
- 11:01Speaker 4: think you're badass and you're really not, I'll show.
- 11:03Speaker 3: You what it's really like.
- 11:05Speaker 4: DB's I think he's like six ' four, like two
- 11:08Speaker 4: seventy five.
- 11:09Speaker 3: I mean, he's huge.
- 11:11Speaker 4: And everybody that went into it came out with a
- 11:14Speaker 4: They it was real quiet walking out of there.
- 11:16Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the whole thing, is you man, It's good
- 11:18Speaker 2: to find that out before you get to a I've
- 11:21Speaker 2: had this conversation with people I know a juvenile hall
- 11:25Speaker 2: or a school for bad kids or jail where you
- 11:28Speaker 2: think you're kind of naughty and bad and tough and
- 11:30Speaker 2: not scared of much until you're around some really, really
- 11:32Speaker 2: scary people. It's good to learn that lesson before you
- 11:36Speaker 2: have to get there. Eh, isn't on the wallet? Homecoming?
- 11:44Speaker 2: Quick question? Quick question for Katie.
- 11:46Speaker 1: So, with your dad being a judge, was he more
- 11:49Speaker 1: strict on you or less strict?
- 11:51Speaker 3: More strict?
- 11:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I got pulled over once and I was not
- 11:56Speaker 4: worried about the cop at all. I was like, oh boy,
- 12:00Speaker 4: I'm gonna have to go home and explain this.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Do you have a gabble at the dinner table? Well,
- 12:07Speaker 2: a big good pound on the table.
- 12:09Speaker 3: He didn't need one, just him.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Well, I guess that's it.
