- 3:17Speaker 3: to back, but I'm going to today as we welcome
- 3:19Speaker 3: into the Jered Construction Studios. Jim Workman from the state's
- 3:22Speaker 3: premier sports publication, Wally and Whimpy's Sports Digests. Good morning, sir,
- 3:26Speaker 3: Good morning.
- 3:28Speaker 5: Honored to be here.
- 3:29Speaker 3: You are the very first guest in this studio, the
- 3:34Speaker 3: very very first.
- 3:36Speaker 5: Very cool. I have some history in this room as
- 3:39Speaker 5: I started part time here in nineteen eighty nine. I
- 3:43Speaker 5: did the sports page of the air with John Dick
- 3:46Speaker 5: and Cheets in this room. So yeah, it's very special
- 3:50Speaker 5: to be here today. So thank you.
- 3:51Speaker 3: And please don't do anything like, you know, carving your
- 3:54Speaker 3: name into the desk or anything. Okay, please don't do that.
- 3:56Speaker 5: Yeah, no more bubble gum, now, no more bubbles only
- 3:59Speaker 5: kicking tail and the bubblegum I is stuck underneath this
- 4:02Speaker 5: brand new desk.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Yeah, all right, well that's good. That's good. I'm sure
- 4:04Speaker 3: the other guests will appreciate that. So when we do
- 4:07Speaker 3: the Metro News mid day show, I'll make sure Amanda
- 4:08Speaker 3: sits over there. Understand that congratulations are in order for you, sir.
- 4:13Speaker 5: Well a little bit. I've been part of the West
- 4:15Speaker 5: Virginia Sports Writers Association for a lot of years and
- 4:19Speaker 5: if you were at the Boys State Tournament on Saturday,
- 4:22Speaker 5: you saw that we honored mister Doug Huff, who is
- 4:26Speaker 5: a National High School Hall of Fame member. He was
- 4:30Speaker 5: actually inducted the same year Sam Huff was. There's very
- 4:34Speaker 5: few that are from West Virginia. Also a guy from
- 4:38Speaker 5: southern West Virginia, Jennings Boyd from North Fork. He's that
- 4:41Speaker 5: type of person's in the Hall of Fame. So yeah,
- 4:44Speaker 5: Doug Huff has announced he's retiring in May right after
- 4:48Speaker 5: our Victory Awards dinner, and we honored him on the
- 4:52Speaker 5: court and the association has voted for me to take
- 4:56Speaker 5: over as the executive director of the West Virginia Sports
- 4:59Speaker 5: Right Association, which is again another honor, and I appreciate
- 5:03Speaker 5: their confidence, and I think we're excited about the future.
- 5:08Speaker 3: And you got your big your annual banquet or something,
- 5:10Speaker 3: come on a brand.
- 5:11Speaker 5: We do Sunday, May the fourth, and we are inducting
- 5:14Speaker 5: into the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame a guy
- 5:17Speaker 5: you may know, Nick Saban, probably one of the greatest
- 5:21Speaker 5: college football coaches of all time, and you know it's
- 5:25Speaker 5: going to be an exciting time that we induct him
- 5:28Speaker 5: into the Hall of Fame. It's a very limited tickets available,
- 5:33Speaker 5: so if anybody in the Charleston area would want them.
- 5:36Speaker 5: It's going to be held at the Bridgeport Conference Center,
- 5:39Speaker 5: and I have some tickets. They're only thirty five dollars,
- 5:42Speaker 5: so they're going to go really quick. And it's a
- 5:45Speaker 5: smaller capacity, I guess, but we'll accommodate as many as
- 5:48Speaker 5: we can. And if companies want to, you know, buy
- 5:50Speaker 5: a table or sponsor the event, we can handle that too.
- 5:53Speaker 3: All right, how do people get the tickets?
- 5:55Speaker 5: Well, I'd say rather than give out my phone number,
- 5:59Speaker 5: you could email me at Wallywimpy Sports at gmail dot com. Okay,
- 6:05Speaker 5: and I will include your contact information. I'll get back
- 6:08Speaker 5: to you all right.
- 6:11Speaker 3: So the boys basketball tournament happened over the weekend. Four
- 6:15Speaker 3: champs were I said earlier, I said four new champs
- 6:18Speaker 3: for a crown. That's actually not true because tug Valley
- 6:20Speaker 3: repeated as a single a champs overall. Your taking the tournament, uh,
- 6:25Speaker 3: dizzy ing.
- 6:26Speaker 5: I mean we spent one hundred and fifty hours over
- 6:30Speaker 5: the past couple of weeks in the Civic Center, if
- 6:33Speaker 5: if you were covering the games, and I was the
- 6:34Speaker 5: on site media coordinator there, so you know, I had
- 6:38Speaker 5: to look back this morning. I was like, you know,
- 6:40Speaker 5: if he asked me about that, I don't know who
- 6:42Speaker 5: won because you're busy. That's the thing about it when
- 6:44Speaker 5: you're doing these kind of events. I got you it
- 6:46Speaker 5: was a blur, but yeah, I mean the teams that
- 6:48Speaker 5: won it were dominant. Yeah, and they brought great fan bases.
- 6:53Speaker 5: It was a fun time.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, and again, congratulations to all the champions
- 6:58Speaker 3: and their respective schools. I'm going to get that was
- 7:00Speaker 3: Speedy Babin's coming up a little bit later on. I
- 7:02Speaker 3: just happened, though, Jim, to be standing in an area
- 7:05Speaker 3: where the teams left the floor on Friday, and I
- 7:09Speaker 3: really felt bad for this one. Kid, you know from
- 7:11Speaker 3: Spring Valley High. They've just been eliminated from the tournament. Obviously,
- 7:14Speaker 3: he was very visibly upset. His girlfriend, I'm presuming, was
- 7:17Speaker 3: there to give him a hug. And for that young man,
- 7:20Speaker 3: don't know his name, but for him and so many
- 7:22Speaker 3: other seniors, that's the last time many of those kids
- 7:24Speaker 3: will ever put on a uniform, certainly for their school.
- 7:27Speaker 3: If they're a senior. Most kids will not go on
- 7:29Speaker 3: to play you know, high school or beyond high school
- 7:33Speaker 3: in basketball, So that's kind of it for them.
- 7:36Speaker 5: Yeah, it is. I mean thankful for sure that they
- 7:39Speaker 5: made it to the tournament in Charleston. A lot of
- 7:43Speaker 5: those similar stories happened, you know, in the regionals this
- 7:47Speaker 5: year and they did not make it to the States.
- 7:49Speaker 5: But you know, thirty two boys teams, thirty two girls
- 7:53Speaker 5: teams made it down here, eight in each of the
- 7:55Speaker 5: four classifications, and I think it was an outstanding achievement.
- 8:00Speaker 5: You do. I mean, there's only going to be one
- 8:02Speaker 5: champion in each class and there, you know, but quite
- 8:05Speaker 5: an accomplishment to get there.
- 8:07Speaker 3: I wanted to have you on last week, but you're
- 8:09Speaker 3: a little bit busy, you know, with the with the
- 8:11Speaker 3: with the boys State tournament, and I'll talk about this
- 8:13Speaker 3: WU basketball situation. What a couple of days it was
- 8:16Speaker 3: in Mountaineer Nation. First the tournament snub, then the governor
- 8:20Speaker 3: and the Attorney General calling out the NCUBA and all
- 8:22Speaker 3: the national attention that that gout, and then coach Coach
- 8:25Speaker 3: Deavreeze leaves for Indiana. Interesting couple of days in Morgantown, Jim,
- 8:30Speaker 3: for sure.
- 8:30Speaker 5: Even with what was it twenty four games going on
- 8:36Speaker 5: last week, a topic of conversation was the WU coaching
- 8:42Speaker 5: and there was a lot of people that wanted to
- 8:44Speaker 5: talk about it in between games, in between sessions. So
- 8:48Speaker 5: it's really going to be interesting to see how it
- 8:50Speaker 5: all plays out. I know some of the names initially
- 8:53Speaker 5: that were bandied about they've taken other jobs. I mean,
- 8:58Speaker 5: Ryan Odom was at Virginia Commonwealth, He's now at the
- 9:01Speaker 5: University of Virginia. McCollum was at Drake. They thought they
- 9:05Speaker 5: might be able to pull another Drake guy, but he's
- 9:08Speaker 5: accepted a position at Iowa. And Will Wade, you know,
- 9:12Speaker 5: McNee State was in the tournament, but he's taken the
- 9:15Speaker 5: nc State job. So that leaves a few others, probably
- 9:20Speaker 5: Jared Calhoun is probably everybody's favorite. It seems late because
- 9:24Speaker 5: he has some history with West Virginia and Bob Huggins,
- 9:28Speaker 5: and he's had some success at Utah State. So we'll see. Now.
- 9:33Speaker 5: One thing is the Utah State ad just said that
- 9:37Speaker 5: they've given Calhoun a contract addendum that's been approved already
- 9:44Speaker 5: by the administration and they want to keep him. So
- 9:47Speaker 5: we'll see. In the news behind that was if he
- 9:51Speaker 5: accepts that to stay at Utah State, he will be
- 9:54Speaker 5: the second highest paid coach in the Mountain West Conference.
- 9:57Speaker 5: So I'm sure it's attractive. But as you know, he
- 10:01Speaker 5: has some ties and I've got a factual. This is
- 10:04Speaker 5: not rumor, factual, factual. He's only been out there for
- 10:07Speaker 5: one year, but one year ago he had he had
- 10:13Speaker 5: a home in Logan. He in my hometown, Logan, Utah.
- 10:18Speaker 5: Oh that you mean Okay, sorry, that's factual. Yeah, Utah
- 10:23Speaker 5: State is in Logan, Utah.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Okay, well that's true. Yeah, she's gonna say he was
- 10:28Speaker 3: down in la as we call him.
- 10:29Speaker 6: No.
- 10:29Speaker 5: Look, we'll get that rumor started.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Though, based on a fact I got you Dave Allen
- 10:33Speaker 3: showing five dyline presented apart by your hometown baseball team,
- 10:36Speaker 3: the Charleston dirty Birds. Great season. Dirty Birds Baseball coming
- 10:39Speaker 3: up over at gomart Ballpark Tuesdays two dollars. Tuesdays two
- 10:42Speaker 3: dollar tickets, popcorn, hot dogs, SODA's and more. Wednesdays bring
- 10:45Speaker 3: your dogs to the park for woof Wednesday Thursdays with
- 10:47Speaker 3: Thursday Thursdays with one dollar beers and water. Fridays freebie
- 10:50Speaker 3: Fridays with all kinds of giveaways, fire works after the game.
- 10:53Speaker 3: On Saturdays and Sundays of course, Family Fun Days. Kids
- 10:56Speaker 3: twelve and under get in for free. For more, visit
- 10:58Speaker 3: dirty Birds Baseball dot com. All right, the questions on
- 11:00Speaker 3: everybody's mind is is there a chance, is there an
- 11:04Speaker 3: outside chance, even an inside chance, that Bob Huggins makes
- 11:07Speaker 3: it to Morgantown to coach the basketball team.
- 11:09Speaker 5: You know, it's all about timing and all these coaching searches.
- 11:13Speaker 5: I don't think he's at the top of the list.
- 11:15Speaker 5: I think, obviously, if he is wanting to coach basketball again,
- 11:20Speaker 5: it would probably be in Morgantown. There were rumors that
- 11:24Speaker 5: he may accept the job this year. He did not
- 11:26Speaker 5: do that. I don't know if he was offered or not,
- 11:28Speaker 5: but you know, we did Rich Rot we brought him back.
- 11:32Speaker 5: I mean, could the same thing happen? Did Hugs burn
- 11:36Speaker 5: some bridges with some things.
- 11:39Speaker 3: He didn't handle? And you and I talked about this.
- 11:41Speaker 3: He did not handle it well well, I mean you know,
- 11:44Speaker 3: I mean, let's face it here, he didn't handle but
- 11:47Speaker 3: Mountaineer Nation was willing to forgive rich right. At least
- 11:49Speaker 3: some of them were. Now some aren't. Some are still
- 11:51Speaker 3: upset about it. But I mean, wouldn't that be something, though, Jim,
- 11:53Speaker 3: to have Huggins and rich Rod back on the sidelines again.
- 11:59Speaker 5: Right, we'll see. I mean, really, the only person that
- 12:02Speaker 5: can answer that is Ren Baker. And another interesting part
- 12:07Speaker 5: of that is wvu's president is outgoing Gordon Gee. So
- 12:15Speaker 5: I don't know how much juice his thoughts on the
- 12:18Speaker 5: situation gives now, but Ren Baker is good. I think
- 12:22Speaker 5: he's going to make a decision this week.
- 12:24Speaker 3: You think something this week.
- 12:25Speaker 5: I do if the coach that he wants is available,
- 12:28Speaker 5: and that that would mean that that guy that he
- 12:31Speaker 5: wants is not involved in the tournament. Now, you know,
- 12:34Speaker 5: we're down to sixteen, so if he's not one of
- 12:37Speaker 5: those top sixteen team coaches, he would be available to
- 12:41Speaker 5: talk to and hire, So I think Chester Fraser. You
- 12:46Speaker 5: know a lot of people kind of think, well, he
- 12:48Speaker 5: doesn't really have a whole lot of history. WU he's
- 12:51Speaker 5: only been an assistant for one year. But he's not
- 12:54Speaker 5: as bad a candidate as you might think he's had.
- 12:56Speaker 5: He's been at some Illinois, he been at k State,
- 12:59Speaker 5: Virginia Tech, he's been one year at WVU. I think
- 13:03Speaker 5: he's worth an interview. And then there's another guy who's
- 13:06Speaker 5: been at Colorado State. They just lost a close when
- 13:09Speaker 5: a buzzer beater yesterday to Maryland. And uh he actually
- 13:13Speaker 5: his wife has connections to West Virginia, so you know,
- 13:17Speaker 5: everybody's got to connect.
- 13:18Speaker 3: There's always a West Virginia connection. Hey, before we let
- 13:21Speaker 3: you go, hope spring's eternal. When you're a Reds fan,
- 13:24Speaker 3: head's opening days on Thursday? Yes, what do you what
- 13:26Speaker 3: do you think?
- 13:27Speaker 5: Well, disappointing news late was the reliever has been hurt,
- 13:32Speaker 5: so he's not going to start the season healthy. So
- 13:36Speaker 5: you know, we'll see.
- 13:37Speaker 7: I do.
- 13:37Speaker 5: I'm very excited about it. I think a lot of
- 13:39Speaker 5: those younger players that have done well the past couple
- 13:42Speaker 5: of years are going to step their game up. I
- 13:45Speaker 5: think day La Cruz is gonna have a better season.
- 13:47Speaker 5: He's surrounded with better talent, and of course it starts
- 13:51Speaker 5: with the manager, Terry mcfrancona. I mean, he's gonna If
- 13:54Speaker 5: anybody can do it, Tito can.
- 13:56Speaker 3: So we'll see get another Wally and Whimpy's night. There's
- 14:00Speaker 3: day night over Buffalo Wild Wings.
- 14:01Speaker 8: Yep.
- 14:01Speaker 5: Typically we do it on the third Thursday, but we
- 14:04Speaker 5: scootered it back to the fourth this week. This Thursday,
- 14:08Speaker 5: Buffalo Wild Wings and Cross Lane six o'clock to seven thirty.
- 14:12Speaker 5: And we've always given away w and Marshall baseball or
- 14:16Speaker 5: basketball and football tickets, but we have some baseball tickets
- 14:19Speaker 5: now we're going to give away and some Dirty Birds tickets.
- 14:21Speaker 5: So it's going to be a fun night Thursday Night,
- 14:23Speaker 5: Buffalo Wild Wings, Crossland.
- 14:25Speaker 3: And remind people where they can view your work in Wallywhippies.
- 14:29Speaker 5: Wallywimpiesports dot Com will point you in the direction of
- 14:33Speaker 5: the print product and our digital product, and follow us

- 14:47Speaker 3: I love that. So oh is that luck? Is that today?

- 18:10Speaker 3: good morning, Welcome to the show.
- 18:12Speaker 8: I feel so underdressed here at the new studios.

- 18:34Speaker 8: So next time I'm on, I'll have to do that.
- 18:36Speaker 3: All right, all right, So let's talk about the game.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Some good games as always, some not so good games.
- 18:43Speaker 3: That happens. That's the nature of the state tournament speed
- 18:47Speaker 3: it is.
- 18:48Speaker 12: Indeed.
- 18:49Speaker 8: First off, I think the region was very well represented.
- 18:53Speaker 8: Two of the better games involved the George Washington Patriots.
- 18:57Speaker 8: There's any final with Morgantown, which came down to a
- 19:00Speaker 8: last second shot that Morgantown missed, and pretty much the
- 19:03Speaker 8: same on championship Saturday, a last second shot that Rick
- 19:07Speaker 8: Green had set up and just had trouble getting that
- 19:12Speaker 8: play set to run and they turned the ball over.
- 19:16Speaker 8: But it was a terrific, terrific weekend for George Washington
- 19:21Speaker 8: High School and they've got a great deal of that
- 19:23Speaker 8: nucleus coming back. Also, Nitro, look at the Wildcats first
- 19:26Speaker 8: time ever and the boys state championship game. So Austin Lowe,
- 19:30Speaker 8: hats off to him and his team, and he's got
- 19:33Speaker 8: some people coming back as well. So it may not
- 19:36Speaker 8: be the last time you and I are talking about
- 19:38Speaker 8: George Washington and Nitro at the boys state high school
- 19:42Speaker 8: basketball tournament.
- 19:43Speaker 3: And I'll tell you there is nothing like the state tournament.
- 19:45Speaker 3: I mean, Fred and I talked about it last week.
- 19:48Speaker 3: I was over there Friday and get to hang out
- 19:50Speaker 3: with you and some other folks over there. It's just
- 19:53Speaker 3: something about it is electric. And you know, you see
- 19:57Speaker 3: these schools that sometimes come from far away play Charleston,
- 20:01Speaker 3: and sometimes they're the bigger schools, sometimes they are the
- 20:03Speaker 3: smaller schools.
- 20:04Speaker 8: Uh.
- 20:04Speaker 3: For the Tug Valley game. And you and I both
- 20:06Speaker 3: know a little something about basketball in southern West Virginia.
- 20:09Speaker 3: I don't think there was a person left in beautiful
- 20:11Speaker 3: downtown Naugatuck.
- 20:13Speaker 8: Uh yeah, running the gas station a beautiful downtown Vaugatuck
- 20:17Speaker 8: right now? Are on last week ago as you went broke? Yeah,
- 20:21Speaker 8: I mean there was nobody, nobody, nobody but you and
- 20:24Speaker 8: I growing up in the southern coal fields. Uh, just
- 20:29Speaker 8: know what that is like. And on Thursday evening the
- 20:33Speaker 8: Wyoming East in my final game, it was just a
- 20:38Speaker 8: great crowd all the way around the crowds were into it.
- 20:42Speaker 8: And I looked at Fred and I said, this just
- 20:45Speaker 8: want to stay tournament is all about right here, just
- 20:51Speaker 8: just having that feel with Williamstown and Wyoming East going
- 20:55Speaker 8: back and forth with each other, it was terrific and
- 20:59Speaker 8: West Side brought a good crowd. And when you see
- 21:02Speaker 8: those Southern coalfield teams, it just you know, it just
- 21:05Speaker 8: gives you a good feeling that what high school sports
- 21:09Speaker 8: means in the state, particularly to the small towns.

- 21:31Speaker 3: you don't know can't hurt you. Any of any big
- 21:34Speaker 3: surprises from the tournament in your opinions, be.
- 21:37Speaker 8: Ah Well Tig Valley was expected to repeat Wielding Central
- 21:42Speaker 8: and Williams Down. They were expected to be in the
- 21:45Speaker 8: championship game on Saturday, and even though that ended up
- 21:48Speaker 8: being a double digit final for Wielding Central, that game
- 21:52Speaker 8: was tied going into the fourth quarter, so no surprise there.
- 21:57Speaker 8: Triple A Bridgeport Ridge Sport's very good, no question about it.
- 22:02Speaker 8: Nitro Lofts to a very good team Spring Mills. I
- 22:05Speaker 8: think everyone expected them to be in the finals. They
- 22:08Speaker 8: went to the finals last year, got upset by Morgantown.
- 22:11Speaker 8: So that's a long answer to a very short answer
- 22:14Speaker 8: of no, no surprise.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Stand out plays or players for you.
- 22:23Speaker 8: I like the big kid from George Washington, Noah Lewis.
- 22:28Speaker 13: I think.
- 22:30Speaker 8: Like him a lot. Everybody you know Tug Valley, they
- 22:32Speaker 8: just you know, I'm not sure Tug Valley has a guard,
- 22:36Speaker 8: a center and a form. They all just go out there.
- 22:38Speaker 8: Everybody plays, you know, like one trip down the floor,
- 22:41Speaker 8: one guy's the center of the next trip down the floor,
- 22:43Speaker 8: he's the point guard. Better watch out for Wyoming East
- 22:49Speaker 8: next year. They've got the six to seven kid back,
- 22:54Speaker 8: They've got the point guard with scary and his dad
- 22:57Speaker 8: was a very good player for the Warriors. And of
- 22:59Speaker 8: course up in Wilming Central you've got already the state
- 23:02Speaker 8: player of the year in Eli Sancomb, who is a
- 23:05Speaker 8: junior and he is as good as advertised. So if
- 23:08Speaker 8: Willing Central does make it to the Civic Center next year,
- 23:11Speaker 8: he is worth the price of.
- 23:13Speaker 3: Admission, and I will want to mention, I'll throw this
- 23:16Speaker 3: out there that if you go to our website wv
- 23:19Speaker 3: metronews dot com, there's a link on there that will
- 23:20Speaker 3: take you to Metro News Television, or you can just
- 23:23Speaker 3: download the Metro News Television app and the games are
- 23:25Speaker 3: archived if you want to go back and watch them.
- 23:27Speaker 3: You maybe want to see the TV coverage. You were
- 23:29Speaker 3: there in person at the Connell SEEMA Convention Center, but
- 23:31Speaker 3: you want to see the TV coverage, you can get
- 23:33Speaker 3: him there before we let you go. Because I like
- 23:36Speaker 3: to talk a little history, may anytime I have you
- 23:38Speaker 3: or Fred Pursinger on the show, give me the best
- 23:42Speaker 3: Tate Tournament game you ever called? Oh that I ever
- 23:48Speaker 3: that you ever called?
- 23:51Speaker 8: Logan in Winfield semi Finals two thousand and five, when
- 23:55Speaker 8: it's doubled overtime. Winfield was the defending Class Doubled A champs.
- 23:59Speaker 8: It looked like they were going to go to the
- 24:01Speaker 8: finals for a second straight year. Logan was down by
- 24:04Speaker 8: three with about three seconds left and Brian Lane of
- 24:07Speaker 8: Logan had a three at the buzzer to send it
- 24:09Speaker 8: into overtime. Now, the best game I ever saw was Logan,
- 24:15Speaker 8: Of course, Logan in Clarksburg Washington Irving nineteen seventy six,
- 24:19Speaker 8: Vick Herbert Jeff Schneider. No three point shot back in
- 24:24Speaker 8: the day, but the final score one eleven to eighty
- 24:26Speaker 8: seven with Vic and Jeff. Could you imagine what the
- 24:30Speaker 8: final would have been with a three point shots.
- 24:32Speaker 3: They would have gone over two hundred probably back I'll
- 24:34Speaker 3: tell you a quick story where I'll let you go
- 24:36Speaker 3: at that Logan and Winfield game in two thousand and five.
- 24:38Speaker 3: I because when you know, you were off doing the tournament,
- 24:41Speaker 3: somebody had to run the radio station, you know. So
- 24:44Speaker 3: I was back in Logan, and this was before the
- 24:46Speaker 3: games were streamed. You know, Internet was a thing, but
- 24:49Speaker 3: not like we know it now. And I can remember
- 24:52Speaker 3: at one point stepping out of the palatial studios of
- 24:56Speaker 3: WVW Radio on we were on the second floor off
- 24:59Speaker 3: unto the balcony and they're on Main Street. There was
- 25:02Speaker 3: a there were two cars sitting there and they had
- 25:05Speaker 3: the tournament network on the station there, Metro News. They
- 25:09Speaker 3: had it cranked up and about forty people standing around
- 25:13Speaker 3: the cars listening to the game. That's pretty intense right there.
- 25:18Speaker 8: It's called Fred I were doing the game?
- 25:20Speaker 3: Is that what it was?
- 25:21Speaker 8: That's what it was.
- 25:22Speaker 3: All right, all right, Speedy, We'll let you get back

- 26:46Speaker 3: I think we were trying to get the governor on today.
- 26:48Speaker 3: I'm not sure if that's a done deal. If not,
- 26:50Speaker 3: he will be on sometime over the next couple of days.
- 26:53Speaker 3: We've got promises from folks with last names like Mansion
- 26:57Speaker 3: and Justice, and a little bit later on in the
- 26:59Speaker 3: week Marshall President Brad Smith will be on the show
- 27:02Speaker 3: today at the two o'clock hour. We're doing a thing
- 27:05Speaker 3: and we'll do this every Monday that I call Mayor Monday,
- 27:08Speaker 3: similar to what I used to do on the local show,
- 27:10Speaker 3: but it will be not just Canau Valley. It'll be

- 27:17Speaker 3: And Today's mayor will be Tom Joyce, the mayor of Parkersburg.
- 27:21Speaker 3: He'll be joining us on the show coming up as
- 27:23Speaker 3: part of Mayor Monday and from two thirty on after
- 27:26Speaker 3: we do the news at the bottom of the hour.
- 27:28Speaker 3: This is my gift, my present, my promise to you.
- 27:31Speaker 3: Every day two thirty, well, let me say, if there's
- 27:35Speaker 3: breaking news, then we may have to throw that little
- 27:38Speaker 3: bone in there, doubtle caveat in there. But from two
- 27:41Speaker 3: thirty until three I will be doing that part myself.
- 27:44Speaker 3: Amanda won't be part of that. It is going to
- 27:46Speaker 3: be nothing but you. It's going to be your calls,
- 27:49Speaker 3: your text. Think of it like Steam Release, except I
- 27:53Speaker 3: may interject some in there too, but I want to
- 27:55Speaker 3: turn it over to you. And that's what we're going
- 27:58Speaker 3: to be doing. So it's Metro News mid Day uh
- 28:01Speaker 3: and it will make its debut today And a big
- 28:04Speaker 3: shout out to the folks at Selango Law as they
- 28:06Speaker 3: have signed on to be the sponsor of the show,

- 33:09Speaker 5: Then it finally ends on well.
- 33:12Speaker 17: Not it will be the whole month, but our day
- 33:14Speaker 17: given being this Wednesday, we will donate one hundred percent
- 33:16Speaker 17: of ourselves to our partner, which is your charity, and
- 33:23Speaker 17: we are very happy and very excited to be a
- 33:25Speaker 17: part of it.
- 33:25Speaker 16: We are thankful and incredibly grateful.
- 33:27Speaker 3: Talk about the work of the Children's Home Society Well.
- 33:30Speaker 16: Children's Home Society was founded in eighteen ninety six, so
- 33:34Speaker 16: we're actually coming up on our one hundred and twenty
- 33:37Speaker 16: ninth year anniversary. If you can believe that serving children
- 33:40Speaker 16: and families in the state of West Virginia, and that's
- 33:43Speaker 16: what we do, and that's what we love to do.
- 33:45Speaker 16: From the very beginning, our mission has always been to
- 33:48Speaker 16: promote the well being of children, and our current efforts
- 33:51Speaker 16: are directed towards helping children find lifetime families, protecting and
- 33:55Speaker 16: nurturing children, and helping preserve and strengthen their families. We
- 34:00Speaker 16: have thirteen primary locations all together, twenty seven service locations
- 34:04Speaker 16: throughout the state of West Virginia, and we have so
- 34:07Speaker 16: many programs that are geared towards helping children and families.
- 34:12Speaker 16: If you don't mind, I'd like to go through them
- 34:13Speaker 16: all because they're incredible and our staff do such an
- 34:17Speaker 16: amazing job working with children and families. We have services
- 34:22Speaker 16: foster care and adoption, emergency shelter care, healthy grand families.
- 34:28Speaker 16: We have four family support centers, we have resource centers.
- 34:32Speaker 16: We offer safe at Home. We offer CSD programming, which
- 34:37Speaker 16: is children with children with serious emotional disorders, independent living
- 34:43Speaker 16: transitional living birth to three, and right from the start
- 34:46Speaker 16: we can programs parents as teachers, a summer youth program,
- 34:50Speaker 16: child advocacy center, therapy services, and after school programs. So
- 34:55Speaker 16: it's incredible what our staff do every day. The lives
- 34:58Speaker 16: they touch is absolutely amazing. Last year we assisted eighteen thousand,
- 35:03Speaker 16: six hundred and sixty one children in families statewide.
- 35:06Speaker 3: It's amazing. That's amazing. And you know when you every
- 35:10Speaker 3: time that you turn on our radio stations or you
- 35:13Speaker 3: pick up the paper, whatever your source of news is,
- 35:15Speaker 3: you hear in the news constantly about especially in West Virginia,
- 35:19Speaker 3: about the crisis that we have with our kids in
- 35:21Speaker 3: various whether it's foster care, whether it's whatever. And so
- 35:25Speaker 3: I mean the work, as you said, you've been doing that,
- 35:27Speaker 3: not you personally, but it's been around for a long,
- 35:30Speaker 3: long long time. But now I mean to use the
- 35:35Speaker 3: advertising cliche, now more than ever. Your services are needed.
- 35:39Speaker 16: Most definitely, and we welcome that. We love serving children
- 35:44Speaker 16: and families in West Virginia.
- 35:45Speaker 3: So when people go into their Jersey Mike's locations and
- 35:49Speaker 3: the locations are again.
- 35:50Speaker 17: The locations be our Hurricane Hurricane Taste Valley location Charleston, Barbersville,
- 35:55Speaker 17: and Vienna, West Virginia.
- 35:56Speaker 3: Okay, well, I'll be partnered.
- 35:57Speaker 17: With the Home Sidey of Westgia. So when everybody comes
- 36:01Speaker 17: out and we encourage everybody to make it stop by
- 36:04Speaker 17: our stores. Granted, it will be a very busiest, busy day.
- 36:09Speaker 17: It's the business day of the year for all my restaurants.
- 36:12Speaker 17: But be patient. A lot of people we push to
- 36:18Speaker 17: online ordering order ahead. We'll plan to be there like
- 36:22Speaker 17: we'll have your food ready, you'll walk in, you'll just
- 36:25Speaker 17: pick up your food and go. It's kind of the
- 36:28Speaker 17: best way to execute our day givings because we'll have
- 36:31Speaker 17: lines to the door at all four or five of
- 36:33Speaker 17: my locations.
- 36:34Speaker 3: All right, well, we it's a very worthwhile cause that
- 36:38Speaker 3: you've chosen here. She said, you do a different one
- 36:40Speaker 3: ever year. In Children's Home Society. I know a little bit.
- 36:42Speaker 3: Actually I know a lot about it. You mentioned that
- 36:44Speaker 3: we can program. I have been in the past, been
- 36:47Speaker 3: very very involved with that.
- 36:48Speaker 8: We can.
- 36:49Speaker 3: We can actually stands for working to eliminate child abuse
- 36:51Speaker 3: and neglect. And there is a big chapter in my
- 36:54Speaker 3: hometown and I worked with with with those folks over
- 36:57Speaker 3: the years, along with a guy named Landell Murphy who
- 37:01Speaker 3: Landau really got his start by performing at the annual
- 37:06Speaker 3: vaudeville show for We Can And I was always a
- 37:09Speaker 3: big part of that, helped him see the show. Uh,
- 37:12Speaker 3: and that's how I got to know Landau was And
- 37:14Speaker 3: to this day, Landau still is very big on the
- 37:18Speaker 3: Children's Home Society. That's kind of like his charity of choice.
- 37:21Speaker 3: So obviously you guys are doing great work. Give us
- 37:24Speaker 3: the details again. So it's all day Wednesday.
- 37:28Speaker 17: All day Wednesday, from time we open the doors to
- 37:31Speaker 17: the time we close it. Come out, support a good,
- 37:35Speaker 17: good cause, good charity. You know, of course, get you
- 37:38Speaker 17: some great food. I have you all lunch coming right
- 37:40Speaker 17: behind me.
- 37:41Speaker 3: Oh really, yeah, Ryan, did you hear that we got
- 37:44Speaker 3: lunch coming courtesy of the folks at Jersey Mike. Yeah,
- 37:46Speaker 3: that made Ryan happy. So what's your favorite thing on
- 37:48Speaker 3: the menu A Jersey Mike.
- 37:49Speaker 17: I'm a I'm an Italian guy. Oh yeah, forever, always,
- 37:53Speaker 17: in forever. We have great failies, but my Jersey Mike's famous, silly.

- 43:22Speaker 3: a segment on the show today. As I mentioned, TJ. Meadows,
- 43:26Speaker 3: it's here now. What you doing man? How about these
- 43:28Speaker 3: new digs? Brother?
- 43:29Speaker 13: Yeah?
- 43:30Speaker 5: You like these?
- 43:30Speaker 20: I tell you, this is nice?
- 43:33Speaker 3: This is nice.
- 43:34Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 43:34Speaker 3: If I could stop hitting the microphone, that seems to
- 43:36Speaker 3: be the thing. So when we switch positions, I'm presuming
- 43:39Speaker 3: you'll do the show from where I'm sitting now, just
- 43:41Speaker 3: keep in mind that every time you move you're gonna
- 43:43Speaker 3: hit this microphone and you're gonna hear a big plunk
- 43:45Speaker 3: every time you do it. So to keep that in mind,
- 43:47Speaker 3: let me get this in here to Day Island, showing

- 44:01Speaker 3: So yeah, so, I mean, how long? How long have
- 44:04Speaker 3: you been doing the show? When did you and Wilson
- 44:06Speaker 3: start doing the show?
- 44:07Speaker 20: January the It was the third of the sixth whatever.
- 44:10Speaker 20: The Monday was, Yeah, the monday, Yeah, that was the
- 44:12Speaker 20: day we had the big snow.
- 44:13Speaker 5: Right, Yeah, it was the sixth.
- 44:14Speaker 3: Was it the sixth? I think so, yeah, that was
- 44:16Speaker 3: the first day. And I have been here. I've been
- 44:20Speaker 3: employed by this here company for five years. In May,
- 44:24Speaker 3: and when I came here and I interviewed for this job,
- 44:28Speaker 3: I remember sitting in Dale Cooper's office. It was during COVID,
- 44:31Speaker 3: so we were socially distanced, and I remember sitting in
- 44:33Speaker 3: Dale Cooper's office and he said, we're getting ready to
- 44:35Speaker 3: do a new studio. It's going to be state of
- 44:38Speaker 3: the art five years later.
- 44:40Speaker 5: Here we are.
- 44:41Speaker 3: But I do want to say all in all seriousness,
- 44:43Speaker 3: and I heard Chris say this this morning, big shout
- 44:45Speaker 3: out to Ken Tennant and Pick and to the guys
- 44:51Speaker 3: who worked very hard on this project from day one.
- 44:55Speaker 3: Matter of fact, who's talking to Ken before we went
- 44:59Speaker 3: on the air. And I think he got out of
- 45:00Speaker 3: here about three am this morning. By that time, Chris
- 45:02Speaker 3: and Jeffer already in the building. Yeah. So it's not
- 45:05Speaker 3: easy to it's not easy to redo a radio station.
- 45:09Speaker 3: I mean it's not, you know, because you have to
- 45:10Speaker 3: work at very very odd times and everything in here.
- 45:14Speaker 3: And you'll be able to see this soon on video.
- 45:17Speaker 3: But nothing was subdoubt. These guys did everything from A
- 45:21Speaker 3: to Z. And the kind of talent that you need
- 45:25Speaker 3: to build something like this, my goodness, I can't imagine.
- 45:28Speaker 3: And you're also dealing with a pretty old building here too.
- 45:31Speaker 3: You are a very old bit. I'm well over one
- 45:33Speaker 3: hundred years old. Yeah so, and oddly enough, I have
- 45:37Speaker 3: been asked to read this little thing about vaccines. It
- 45:39Speaker 3: just kind of worked out that way. Sult me get
- 45:40Speaker 3: this in older adults to protect themselves agains severe respiratory disease.
- 45:44Speaker 3: Talk to your doctor about flu, COVID nineteen and RSV
- 45:47Speaker 3: vaccines risk class do more. Get started vaccines dot gov
- 45:50Speaker 3: paid for by the US Department of Health and Human Services.
- 45:52Speaker 3: That's actually what I wanted to talk about with you,
- 45:54Speaker 3: mister Meadows.
- 45:54Speaker 20: You dropped a commentary about vaccines I did at WV
- 45:58Speaker 20: metronews dot com. It's available now in our front page
- 46:00Speaker 20: and the bottom line, Dave are debate in this state
- 46:04Speaker 20: around school vaccinations has been hijacked. It's been hijacked, and
- 46:09Speaker 20: I think it's important that West Virginians know that there
- 46:13Speaker 20: is data out there. Again, I've included this in my
- 46:16Speaker 20: piece that says this is not important to West Virginians.
- 46:20Speaker 20: It's not something that they want. And oh, by the way,
- 46:22Speaker 20: these are conservative West Virginians. One of the arguments about
- 46:26Speaker 20: this debate is it's a personal freedom choice and conservatives
- 46:30Speaker 20: are behind this one hundred and ten percent. Well, there's
- 46:33Speaker 20: a little survey that was provided to me by the
- 46:35Speaker 20: West Virginia Chamber.
- 46:36Speaker 5: I quote it in my piece.
- 46:37Speaker 3: They asked this question.
- 46:40Speaker 20: Respondents to the survey were asked do you generally think
- 46:44Speaker 20: that vaccinations against childhood diseases such as measles and mumps
- 46:48Speaker 20: are a good or a bad idea? An overwhelming eighty
- 46:51Speaker 20: six point six percent answered good idea. Just five point
- 46:55Speaker 20: five percent said bad idea. Eleven point three percent decided.
- 47:00Speaker 5: But this is key.
- 47:01Speaker 20: Among those eighty six point six percent of respondents that
- 47:05Speaker 20: said it's a good idea, eighty two percent of those
- 47:07Speaker 20: people identified as conservative.
- 47:11Speaker 5: Who has a problem with this?
- 47:12Speaker 3: Well, obviously some lawmakers think that people do have a
- 47:15Speaker 3: problem with it. Obviously.
- 47:17Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 47:17Speaker 20: And I think the other part of my piece that
- 47:20Speaker 20: I talk about is the fact that there is an outside,
- 47:23Speaker 20: out of state interest group that is flooding this debate.
- 47:26Speaker 20: They have targeted Delegate Scott Heckert of Wood County. He's
- 47:29Speaker 20: become a focal point in this commentary. Heckerd noted on
- 47:34Speaker 20: his Facebook page of the weekend, he received roughly fifty
- 47:36Speaker 20: emails from senders with Michigan area codes in the subject.
- 47:40Speaker 20: So they said from so and so, and they had
- 47:42Speaker 20: a Michigan telephone number. Why is that a good thing?
- 47:45Speaker 3: Well, I mean, let me just say here, and I'm
- 47:47Speaker 3: not defending that by any strategy of the imagination. But
- 47:49Speaker 3: I will say that's not uncommon. I mean it's not uncommon.
- 47:52Speaker 3: It happens with a lot of hot button topics. You'll see,
- 47:55Speaker 3: you know, things coming in from California, You'll see things
- 47:58Speaker 3: coming in from other states.
- 47:59Speaker 20: That's not entire I'm not a fan of it, but
- 48:01Speaker 20: it's not entirely uncommon. This group, American Action Fund. It's
- 48:04Speaker 20: led by an individual named Darren stid. There was a
- 48:07Speaker 20: piece that he was quoted in Mountain State Spotlight. Here's
- 48:10Speaker 20: what he said. He said, quote, if you don't behave
- 48:13Speaker 20: like a conservative during the legislative session, something really bad
- 48:17Speaker 20: is going to happen to you come primary season. Well,
- 48:20Speaker 20: the data that we have says this isn't conservative. It's
- 48:24Speaker 20: not what conservatives want, at least conservatives in the Mountain State.
- 48:27Speaker 20: This is also the same group, according to Delegates Sarah
- 48:31Speaker 20: Drennan of Putnam County, that dropped off and was caught
- 48:34Speaker 20: delivering these fraudulent letters that purportedly were from constituents. And
- 48:39Speaker 20: when lawmakers went to their constituents this had to do
- 48:41Speaker 20: with the con issue, they didn't send them a certificate
- 48:45Speaker 20: of need. They didn't send them. So this is the
- 48:47Speaker 20: kind of group that is inserting itself into our debate.
- 48:52Speaker 20: And my final point about this is if this passes,
- 48:56Speaker 20: this group pushes for this, and lawmakers move forward with
- 48:58Speaker 20: this group group on their so called campaign for liberty,
- 49:02Speaker 20: They'll be on to their next state and their next
- 49:04Speaker 20: issue while we in West Virginia deal with the fallout
- 49:08Speaker 20: of what they wanted us to do. I think West
- 49:11Speaker 20: Virginians need to call their legislators, understand how this group
- 49:15Speaker 20: has informed or not informed opinions, and make their voice heard.
- 49:18Speaker 20: And oh, by the way, this bill is going to
- 49:19Speaker 20: be on third reading today potentially we don't know for
- 49:22Speaker 20: sure yet, but potentially.
- 49:23Speaker 3: Texas both sides, both sides is in all caps TJ.
- 49:27Speaker 3: Both sides of this vaccine debate greatly, also in all caps,
- 49:31Speaker 3: greatly overstate their case.
- 49:35Speaker 20: Look, I have a bent on this. I think that's clear.
- 49:39Speaker 20: I don't think we are overstating any case. When we
- 49:43Speaker 20: talk about exposing our children to preventable communicable diseases that
- 49:48Speaker 20: have long been eradicated.
- 49:49Speaker 3: And West Virginia is a state that has led the nation,
- 49:52Speaker 3: we can't say we're number one. And a whole lot
- 49:54Speaker 3: of stuff, a whole lot of good stuff.
- 49:56Speaker 5: TJ.
- 49:57Speaker 3: But I mean, other states have monitored what we have
- 49:59Speaker 3: done in West Virginia. But I can already tell you
- 50:04Speaker 3: what a lot of the anti VAXs folks are going
- 50:06Speaker 3: to say is they're going to point to your data
- 50:08Speaker 3: and say, well, that came from the Chamber of Commerce,
- 50:10Speaker 3: a liberal organization, which is laughable.
- 50:14Speaker 5: But a lot of people are.
- 50:16Speaker 3: Going to look at that and probably say, well, it
- 50:18Speaker 3: came from the Chamber of Commerce.
- 50:19Speaker 5: What do you expect?
- 50:19Speaker 20: There are other surveys out there in the field, polls
- 50:22Speaker 20: in the field right now, and I'll have guests on
- 50:24Speaker 20: this week to talk about that. I've got even more
- 50:26Speaker 20: data to back this up from other sources. Okay, that's
- 50:29Speaker 20: independently done. And oh, by the way, that questions West Virginians,
- 50:33Speaker 20: these six hundred people in this survey, West Virginians, that's important.
- 50:37Speaker 3: Don't give me a national survey in this debate.
- 50:39Speaker 5: All right?
- 50:40Speaker 3: What else is going on to the dome that I
- 50:41Speaker 3: know you guys aren't there today, but should be back tomorrow.
- 50:43Speaker 20: There, right, be back tomorrow. Brad mclhagey coming up at
- 50:45Speaker 20: ten oh six. He'll give us the rundown on this
- 50:47Speaker 20: plus all other things happening at the legislature coming up
- 50:50Speaker 20: at eleven o six. Matt Christiansen, former state health officer.
- 50:54Speaker 20: He had a letter that went to the legislature over
- 50:57Speaker 20: the weekend, actually on Friday. We'll talk with him. He
- 50:59Speaker 20: and his fellow former state health officers have weighed in
- 51:03Speaker 20: on this. My good buddy Mike McKenna from the Washington Times,
- 51:06Speaker 20: longtime national Republican operative. He's weighing in on Elon Musk.
- 51:10Speaker 20: And look here's another conservative, rock solid conservative, saying, eh,
- 51:14Speaker 20: wait a minute, Elon may not be doing the best
- 51:16Speaker 20: thing ever. We'll talk with him at eleven thirty. Plus
- 51:18Speaker 20: phone calls, texts, x's tweets. I don't know what to
- 51:23Speaker 20: call him nowadays, DMS, DM, DMS oh.
- 51:26Speaker 3: Ok, all right, all right. So I had a text
- 51:29Speaker 3: of the show earlier.
- 51:29Speaker 5: TG.
- 51:30Speaker 3: You don't know if you heard this or not, that
- 51:31Speaker 3: they said a person said that they were in a
- 51:33Speaker 3: church on Sunday and Trump's name was brought up. Again.
- 51:35Speaker 3: I'm not a big fan of bringing up politics in church,
- 51:37Speaker 3: but that's just me and people booed in. This texture
- 51:40Speaker 3: says that people are starting to turn on Trump. Any
- 51:44Speaker 3: sign of that, I'm going to say no to that.
- 51:46Speaker 3: I don't know that people are starting to turn on Trump.
- 51:49Speaker 3: I do think people are starting to question Trump more
- 51:54Speaker 3: and more, and in the congregation of trump Ism and
- 51:57Speaker 3: Republican populismquestions are starting to be asked. I think that's
- 52:02Speaker 3: a good thing me personally, I don't want politics in
- 52:04Speaker 3: the pulpit either. We need to be there to talk
- 52:06Speaker 3: about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, not about politics.
- 52:08Speaker 3: All right, You and mister Wilson will wax poetically on
- 52:12Speaker 3: several subjects coming up at ten minuts of wax. Try
- 52:15Speaker 3: not to get stains all over the new studio here
- 52:18Speaker 3: came in.
- 52:19Speaker 5: I don't want to be the first guy that spilled coffee.
- 52:21Speaker 5: I was too scared of even bring any they get.
- 52:23Speaker 3: In this sport. That's why they put down the black countertop,
- 52:25Speaker 3: because of people like me and you. Jim Workman's already
- 52:28Speaker 3: carved his name, he said, under the the on the desk,
- 52:30Speaker 3: so you can see Ryan.
- 52:32Speaker 13: I love that.
- 52:32Speaker 5: I can wave to Ryan.
- 52:34Speaker 3: We can't talk to him, but they're working on that now,
- 52:36Speaker 3: but we can't see him.
- 52:37Speaker 5: Baby steps.
- 52:38Speaker 3: Coming up on the show tomorrow, John Lovejoy for Fresh Air,
- 52:41Speaker 3: Jason Pizitello will be here and Kelly Anderson c AMC.
