- 1:17US. Welcome to Love letters from
- 1:21God. Welcome to love letters from
- 2:09God. We are going to be reading today
- 2:14from the 119th Psalm at Psalms 119.
- 2:25That's the longest chapter in the Bible, the longest Psalm in
- 2:33the Bible. I want to show you another
- 2:35little trick in how to get a daily reading of God's love
- 2:44letter. And if you notice this
- 2:47particular Psalm in your Bible, it's divided into 22 little
- 2:55segments. Each segment has 8 verses in it.
- 3:01And at the top of every one of those verses is a funny sound
- 3:06and word. Now, that funny sound and word
- 3:11is a letter of the Hebrew alphabet.
- 3:15And this is the way that the Jewish people taught the Jewish
- 3:22alphabet to their children and taught the Bible to them as
- 3:29well. So what we're going to do, I
- 3:31don't think we'll get through all 22 sections of it today, but
- 3:38we'll get a ways down the road. And notice if you would do each
- 3:43one of these eight verse segments every day in 22 days,
- 3:51you would have the complete Psalm read.
- 3:58The Psalm is dedicated to the value of this love letter.
- 4:04It talks over and over again about how tremendous this love
- 4:11letter is. If you will remember last week
- 4:14we talked about David saying in Psalm 23 that the Lord was
- 4:21taking him through the valley of the shadow of death.
- 4:25And now after he says that, he says your word helps me, Your
- 4:33staff, guides me and protects me.
- 4:38And that's what we're talking about here.
- 4:41This staff, this guide that David used himself was God's
- 4:49blessed word, or what you and I today can call love letters from
- 4:57God. So let's start out reading this
- 5:01in Psalms 119. Blessed are those whose way is
- 5:10blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord.
- 5:16Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, who seek Him with
- 5:22their whole heart, who also do no wrong but walk in His ways.
- 5:32You have commanded Your precepts to be kept diligently.
- 5:39All that my ways may be steadfast in keeping your
- 5:44statutes. Then I shall not be put to
- 5:47shame. Having my eyes fixed on all Your
- 5:53commandments, I will praise you with an upright heart.
- 5:59When I learn your righteous rules.
- 6:03I will keep your statutes. Do not utterly forsake me.
- 6:10Now that's the first 8 verses. You know, when David talks about
- 6:21God's rod and staff comforting him, he's here talking about the
- 6:29equipment that the Lord has, the shepherd's rod and staff.
- 6:38They were used as instruments of discipline and of guidance and
- 6:45of protection. And that's what's being talked
- 6:50about here in this 119th Psalm. Let's read the next section.
- 7:02How can a young man keep his way pure?
- 7:09By guarding it according to your Word.
- 7:13With my whole heart I seek you. Let me not wander from your
- 7:20commandments. I have stored up Your word in my
- 7:24heart that I might not sin against You.
- 7:29Blessed are you, O Lord, teach me your statutes with my lips.
- 7:37I declare all the rules of your mouth in the way of your
- 7:42testimonies. I delight as much as in all
- 7:46riches. I will meditate on Your precepts
- 7:51and fix my eyes on Your ways. I will delight in your statutes.
- 7:58I will not forget your word. All right, now that's the that's
- 8:04the second eight verse segment here that's used in this 119th
- 8:12Psalm today. Our spiritual rod and our staff
- 8:20today is God's word, just exactly what we're reading, this
- 8:26word of God, this love letter from God.
- 8:31It is the staff today, and it is the rod today.
- 8:38You know, we have difficulties, all of us, as we live our lives
- 8:45today. And those difficulties sometimes
- 8:51require some discipline, and this love letter talks about
- 8:58that discipline. When we submit to the shepherd,
- 9:04pay attention to the shepherd. It's not slavery that we are
- 9:09being bound to, but it really is security.
- 9:15This rod and this staff that the Lord has provided us with this
- 9:23love letter is also protection. It's going to protect you and me
- 9:31from the problems that we might have to face.
- 9:37Let's take a look at, let's take a look at the next 8 verse
- 9:42segment here. Deal bountifully with Your
- 9:48servants that I may live and keep Your word.
- 9:56Open my eyes that I may behold wondrous things of Your law.
- 10:04I am a sojourner on the earth. Hide not Your commandments from
- 10:10me. My soul is consumed with longing
- 10:16for Your rules at all times. You rebuke the insolent,
- 10:22accursed ones who wander from your commandments.
- 10:27Take away from me scorn and contempt, for I have kept your
- 10:34testimonies. Even though Princess sit
- 10:38plotting against me. Your servant will meditate on
- 10:42your statutes. Your testimonies are my delight.
- 10:48They are my counselors. OK, That's the third little 8
- 10:54verse segment that we're talking about here.
- 10:57Now, this persecution that may come our way, problems that may
- 11:06come our way as we live our lives and so forth, they can
- 11:11also purify us. They can make us stronger.
- 11:16Remember, you know, diamonds, those beautiful diamonds, they
- 11:24come from lumps of coal that are purified by intense pressure
- 11:34over the years. So when you and I have these
- 11:38pressures on us and things really seem to be coming down on
- 11:44us, think in terms of the Lord helping us and making us
- 11:49stronger, turning us from just a lump of coal into a beautiful
- 11:57diamond. Let's take a look at the next
- 12:02section. My soul clings to the dust.
- 12:14Give me life according to your word.
- 12:20When I told of my ways, you answered me.
- 12:25Teach me your statutes, make me understand the way of Your
- 12:30precepts, and I will meditate on Your wondrous works.
- 12:36My soul melts away for sorrow. Strengthen me according to Your
- 12:41Word, put false ways far from me, and graciously teach me Your
- 12:48law. I have chosen the way of
- 12:51faithfulness. I set Your rules before me.
- 12:56I cling to Your testimonies. O Lord, let me not be put to
- 13:04shame. I will run in the way of Your
- 13:07commandments when you enlarge my heart.
- 13:13OK, another one of those eight verse segments here.
- 13:21You know, when you face a crisis, do you often wonder, do
- 13:29the crisis that we face today come from God or do they come
- 13:36from the devil? You know, we don't always know,
- 13:43but we do know that God can bring flowers out of the muck.
- 13:50You know any of you that are from the Midwest and you know
- 13:56anything about farming in the Midwest and you know about the
- 14:02ponds that are out there on those farms, those dark mucky
- 14:08ponds on the farms of the Midwest, sometimes they are so
- 14:13dark and so mucky that if you go down into the clean a mountain
- 14:19some way you can't even see. But they can.
- 14:23They can also grow some beautiful flowers on top of
- 14:30those mucky ponds. God can do that with your life
- 14:38and my life as well. Let's look at the next section.
- 14:47Teach me, O Lord, the way of Your statutes, and I will keep
- 14:52it to the end. Give me understanding that I may
- 14:59keep Your law and observe it with my whole heart.
- 15:06Lead me in the path of Your commandments, for I delight in
- 15:10it. Incline my heart to Your
- 15:15testimonies and not to selfish gain.
- 15:20Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things.
- 15:25Give me life in Your ways. Confirm to Your servant Your
- 15:30promise that you may be feared. Turn away the reproach that I
- 15:37dread, for your rules are good. Behold, I long for your precepts
- 15:46in your righteousness. Give me relief.
- 15:56Everything you know that was brought into being by the love
- 16:02of God was there because God made it.
- 16:09And God loves what he made, and God keeps what he made in mind.
- 16:16And that means you too, as you pay attention to this broadcast
- 16:25about God's love letter. There's a song called It is Well
- 16:30with my soul. I don't have that song with me
- 16:35just right now. But when you have opportunity,
- 16:38and we may just look at that next time, but keep in mind what
- 16:43we have already read and we will continue reading the next
- 16:48opportunity with this Psalms 119.
- 16:53But for now, let's offer a prayer.
- 16:57Our Father in heaven, your love letter is so wonderful.
- 17:05It is so perfect. It is a guide, it is a staff
- 17:13that is strong and keeps us in line.
- 17:18Help us to read it every day. Make it a part of our daily
- 17:22life. And as we do that, we'll find
- 17:26out more about who you are and how you know who we are.
- 17:32And we'll all be together a whole lot better.
- 17:37We pray this all in Jesus name, Amen.
- 17:40And that's it for today. Ladies and gentlemen, thank you
