- 0:00Speaker 1: Santa's Little Helpers from jacob Hester and are taking over
- 0:04Speaker 1: off the Bench, presented by All Star Toyota. Tune in
- 0:07Speaker 1: for some naughty and nice sports talk this Christmas season
- 0:10Speaker 1: live from studio. Here's jacob Hester and.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Mat from Well Done line Christopher.
- 0:28Speaker 3: That might be better than the Halloween one. Halloween's good.
- 0:30Speaker 3: The robot was good. I wasn't expecting that.
- 0:34Speaker 4: Though that was really good. That was good and it's
- 0:36Speaker 4: the banger of song. Though well done? Well done? Why
- 0:39Speaker 4: would we get doings?
- 0:42Speaker 5: New?
- 0:42Speaker 4: What? What change?
- 0:44Speaker 6: Keep the just keep the holiday on?
- 0:46Speaker 7: Yes, keep holiday ones? How you can put those together
- 0:49Speaker 7: so fast? Because we talked about it at six fifty
- 0:51Speaker 7: this morning.
- 0:51Speaker 6: Yeah, I was all right, we got ten minutes. I
- 0:54Speaker 6: mean the song like that, it's already done. I just
- 0:56Speaker 6: have to replace T Bob and the last sponsor.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Mm hmm. I bet I don't know.
- 1:04Speaker 3: I hadn't obviously we're on the same time tea Bob is,
- 1:06Speaker 3: but I bet he is peacocky around barstool today.
- 1:10Speaker 4: I bet him and Megan making money or levitating.
- 1:13Speaker 6: I haven't seen T Bob on Twitter, but I've seen
- 1:15Speaker 6: Meghan and she is.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Oh, there's g let's get your We were sure if
- 1:20Speaker 3: she was going to join us tonight, GORDI rush shout
- 1:24Speaker 3: out to our guys to brave the.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Weather in Norman, Oklahoma. Now, I was trying.
- 1:33Speaker 3: I was trying to get him to close the old
- 1:34Speaker 3: window they're in the broadcast booth.
- 1:38Speaker 5: Didn't.
- 1:38Speaker 4: We didn't get that done.
- 1:39Speaker 3: But it's okay because uh, Gordy had to sit there
- 1:42Speaker 3: in those elements and he had to watch that.
- 1:46Speaker 4: The offense from Grapple was just really unlucky turn of
- 1:53Speaker 4: events for that offense.
- 1:55Speaker 5: Gorse wanted both teams to run the football so we
- 1:57Speaker 5: could get out of there. I mean, it was a
- 2:00Speaker 5: beautiful day until every about two minutes.
- 2:03Speaker 4: In a gust.
- 2:05Speaker 3: I know it was all in pregame. You know the
- 2:08Speaker 3: machine that shoots the punts, right, the Jack's machine. I
- 2:11Speaker 3: knew when they were trying to do that and get
- 2:13Speaker 3: that done, and every time they shot it it would
- 2:15Speaker 3: end up in the crowd because of the wind. I
- 2:18Speaker 3: was like, oh, this could be a tough day because
- 2:19Speaker 3: I mean, neither one of those quarterbacks it's not going
- 2:21Speaker 3: to be able to push it through the wind.
- 2:23Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, Josh Allen not out there, so.
- 2:26Speaker 7: I know you're not like real experience with too much
- 2:28Speaker 7: cold weather, so like, what's your go to like attire,
- 2:30Speaker 7: so how do you prepare to got not.
- 2:32Speaker 5: True for Green Bay. But we played at Iowall once
- 2:36Speaker 5: it was a negative three, and then I played at
- 2:38Speaker 5: Northwestern Fair, which was two blocks from Lake Michigan, and
- 2:42Speaker 5: that was the first time I ever got hit in
- 2:44Speaker 5: cold weather and it's stung, so I didn't really want
- 2:48Speaker 5: to come on the field. We have those Packers jersey
- 2:50Speaker 5: and the hand warmers, the Packers jackets, yeah, those big jackets.
- 2:54Speaker 4: But not a whole lot of use, not a lot
- 2:56Speaker 4: of experience.
- 2:57Speaker 5: I like you.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Yeah, we were talking about the game g right before
- 2:59Speaker 3: you came on, and you know, I know we'll get
- 3:01Speaker 3: to all the link if of stuff that is the
- 3:03Speaker 3: main storyline. But we were like, it would be disrespectful
- 3:06Speaker 3: not to talk about the defensive performance and what they
- 3:09Speaker 3: did and they were going to have to be perfect,
- 3:11Speaker 3: and they had one play where they weren't perfect and
- 3:14Speaker 3: it was the difference in the game. But still a
- 3:16Speaker 3: great performance by the defense giving you at least an
- 3:18Speaker 3: opportunity there to win.
- 3:20Speaker 5: Incredible, incredible performance. There are two plays, right, I mean,
- 3:23Speaker 5: you know, the perfect call Oklahoma has that little slip
- 3:25Speaker 5: screen and you get the blitz and then you know
- 3:28Speaker 5: they were playing some sort of zone thirds and I
- 3:30Speaker 5: think DJ Pickett didn't get the call and he squatted
- 3:33Speaker 5: on that side and the wide receiver in right past him.
- 3:36Speaker 5: And you know, at that point, Corey and Blake, what
- 3:38Speaker 5: do you say to DJ Pickett? You really can't jump
- 3:41Speaker 5: as we're ends. As well as he's played this year,
- 3:43Speaker 5: you know, they realized that it was a bust. And
- 3:46Speaker 5: it's a shame. It's a shame. They played well enough
- 3:48Speaker 5: to win, played well enough to win a couple times
- 3:50Speaker 5: this year.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Yeah, they did.
- 3:51Speaker 3: And we were talking about right before you came on,
- 3:54Speaker 3: if you could pair everything you're getting now on offense
- 3:57Speaker 3: with what you already have on defense. I mean, you're
- 4:01Speaker 3: talking about one of the top scoring offenses in the country.
- 4:03Speaker 3: You're talking about an LSU defense that is fourth in
- 4:07Speaker 3: the SEC, only giving up eighteen points per game.
- 4:10Speaker 4: I mean, on paper, it looks the part.
- 4:12Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a headshaker. No, let's you guys talk more
- 4:15Speaker 5: because you're offensive guys. I mean, if not Smart's healthy,
- 4:19Speaker 5: what happens this season? Right? I mean, he's able to
- 4:21Speaker 5: stretch the football field at ole Miss. I mean there's
- 4:24Speaker 5: wide receivers running wide open.
- 4:26Speaker 7: If the offense just looks like a shadow of itself
- 4:29Speaker 7: I did a year ago, and I can't blame that
- 4:31Speaker 7: completely on that injury. Like the foundation x's and o's
- 4:34Speaker 7: of this offense were just so flawed from the beginning,
- 4:38Speaker 7: and you've seen it now. They're trying to they're trying
- 4:40Speaker 7: to they're trying to implement some new stuff on obviously
- 4:42Speaker 7: they tried to.
- 4:43Speaker 5: It's just you guys are offensive guys. To me, last
- 4:46Speaker 5: year looked like what Joe Slone wanted to do. Yeah,
- 4:48Speaker 5: and it was more pass oriented, less run. But it
- 4:51Speaker 5: was one thought. This year just was too many cooks
- 4:54Speaker 5: in the kitchen.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Gosh.
- 4:55Speaker 5: And it was just a collection of plays. It did
- 4:57Speaker 5: a scrow. It was just stuf.
- 5:00Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 5:00Speaker 3: And the receiver screens was wild because they weren't like
- 5:03Speaker 3: Matt talks about this often. They weren't like real receiver
- 5:05Speaker 3: screens like you saw Oklahoma. You got a blitz, you
- 5:08Speaker 3: play the blitz with the ball and a screen. You
- 5:10Speaker 3: got two linemen out front tunnel screen and then like
- 5:13Speaker 3: l shoes were hey, we're gonna throw it to a
- 5:14Speaker 3: receiver and hope he wins the one on one and
- 5:17Speaker 3: gets as much arts as he gay.
- 5:18Speaker 5: You tell me, Matt, when you get to the line
- 5:20Speaker 5: of scrimmage and you've got all you know, you've got
- 5:22Speaker 5: trips out there and all three DB's are squatting, right,
- 5:26Speaker 5: at some point, you gotta be able to check out
- 5:28Speaker 5: of that, right, Yeah, there's there's I mean, I'm not
- 5:31Speaker 5: gonna throw this. Throwing the screen in.
- 5:33Speaker 4: The numbers, Yeah, it was. It was. It was banging
- 5:36Speaker 4: your head on the wall.
- 5:37Speaker 7: Frustrating for offensive people to watch the offensive play all
- 5:40Speaker 7: year because of decisions like that they had. They had
- 5:44Speaker 7: rps when there shouldn't be rps, which which affected the
- 5:47Speaker 7: lineman block into the second level. And you have, you
- 5:50Speaker 7: have your answer. So every place should have an answer
- 5:52Speaker 7: to it. Every run place should have an answer to it,
- 5:53Speaker 7: every pass place should have an answer to it. And
- 5:55Speaker 7: it's usually but like there's different answers to every test,
- 6:00Speaker 7: like it's and the answers made no sense. There was
- 6:03Speaker 7: like you said, there's no there was no ability to
- 6:06Speaker 7: check out. And even in this day and age, where
- 6:08Speaker 7: like college teams looked at the sideline, like every time
- 6:11Speaker 7: they looked at the sideline, the play that was called
- 6:12Speaker 7: in or relayed in was usually wrong and uh, and
- 6:16Speaker 7: it was just they were so you know, they got
- 6:19Speaker 7: out of running plays early on so fast at any look,
- 6:22Speaker 7: at any like deception that the box might not be cleaned,
- 6:25Speaker 7: that the count might not be cleaned to the right
- 6:27Speaker 7: side of the running.
- 6:28Speaker 3: And that was all those timeouts that you saw where
- 6:30Speaker 3: nuss Meyer and Brian Kelly would argue about it because
- 6:33Speaker 3: he was saying, just run it. Just go out there
- 6:35Speaker 3: and run it. It's not gonna be perfect. Sometimes Yeah, yeah.
- 6:38Speaker 7: There was like, oh, well, the safety's kind of coming
- 6:40Speaker 7: down or the the wheels, you know, shaded over the play.
- 6:43Speaker 5: The plays were getting in too late, and there was
- 6:45Speaker 5: no other you know how many times this year, Jake,
- 6:48Speaker 5: I'm yelling play clock, you know, playlock nine. We're breaking
- 6:52Speaker 5: the huddle. It's at nine. Yeah, you got a rookie
- 6:54Speaker 5: quarterback in Van Buren that's on the road at Oklahoma,
- 6:58Speaker 5: and you're gonna get him in the line of script
- 6:59Speaker 5: to nine, knowing that he's got some sort of he's
- 7:02Speaker 5: at least got to read half the field, got this
- 7:04Speaker 5: play and half or do something. It was it was
- 7:06Speaker 5: frustrating to watch this year.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Yeah, we don't have to worry about it anymore. No,
- 7:09Speaker 4: we got Lane.
- 7:10Speaker 3: No, and one thing, Lane's always, no matter where he's been,
- 7:15Speaker 3: no matter what the situation, he can call a game.
- 7:18Speaker 5: No, no, no.
- 7:18Speaker 4: I mean one of, if not the best in college football.
- 7:22Speaker 3: Gordy, You and I talked about it on the broadcast
- 7:23Speaker 3: this year when we were doing the Old Miss game.
- 7:26Speaker 3: We were like, Oh, he's gonna come back to that.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Oh he's gonna he' setting that up. He's gonna come
- 7:30Speaker 3: back to that, And every time he did, but you
- 7:31Speaker 3: didn't know when it was gonna happen. And I remember
- 7:33Speaker 3: like he utilized a tight end so much in our game,
- 7:36Speaker 3: like that was the thing that he saw that he
- 7:38Speaker 3: tried to exploit. And when they needed to close the game,
- 7:41Speaker 3: I remember us both being like tight end, Like watch
- 7:44Speaker 3: a tight end, and it was a unique way he
- 7:46Speaker 3: got him free and boom, tight end game over.
- 7:47Speaker 5: It was he set up all that misdirection and sneak
- 7:50Speaker 5: the tight end out. Look for me watching Lane over
- 7:53Speaker 5: the years, he's always scripted the first three or four
- 7:57Speaker 5: series better than anybody. Yeah, I mean, unbelievable. Would I
- 8:00Speaker 5: worried about for it was a good thing for L
- 8:02Speaker 5: Shoe back to the Matt Crow years is that he
- 8:05Speaker 5: got away from some of it and then he kind
- 8:06Speaker 5: of freelanced a little bit. Yeah, it made more sense
- 8:09Speaker 5: and more rhyme into things we talked about he's doing
- 8:12Speaker 5: a to set up B and NC and things like
- 8:15Speaker 5: that was more consistent what he's doing. So I think
- 8:17Speaker 5: it would be fabulous. It's can fascinating. I should see
- 8:20Speaker 5: the watch the moves he makes now and recruit him.
- 8:24Speaker 5: We got what two days left.
- 8:25Speaker 4: And there's a lot of movie going on, crazy, right,
- 8:28Speaker 4: I mean.
- 8:29Speaker 3: I guess see the good thing So Penn State when
- 8:32Speaker 3: James Franklin leaves, they had seventeen guys dcommended, no doubt
- 8:35Speaker 3: girl who's only had two two and he.
- 8:37Speaker 5: Got people talking about flipping and then two old miss
- 8:40Speaker 5: guys flipped out.
- 8:41Speaker 3: And even like some of the ones that have flipped,
- 8:43Speaker 3: like you kind of felt like they might not get
- 8:45Speaker 3: to the finish line from Lshoe's perspective, like maybe maybe
- 8:50Speaker 3: you should look elsewhere at least in one of them.
- 8:52Speaker 3: And so like that staff's done a great job of
- 8:54Speaker 3: keeping the whore together and the job that Frank's done
- 8:57Speaker 3: and the entire assistant coaching staff over there, and so
- 9:00Speaker 3: really right now, the good thing for Lane, he's got
- 9:02Speaker 3: a top fifteen recruiting class and you saw him meet
- 9:04Speaker 3: with the top guys. Lamar Brown's there, you know, in
- 9:08Speaker 3: the office last night, and so I know that it's
- 9:12Speaker 3: two days away, but at least the foundation was held
- 9:14Speaker 3: together so well by the staff, and now Lane can
- 9:17Speaker 3: kind of come in and be the closer, like you said,
- 9:19Speaker 3: maybe get one or two guys that he committed at
- 9:21Speaker 3: ole Miss.
- 9:21Speaker 5: The gallon from Oklahoma was committed to Oklahoma over from
- 9:24Speaker 5: Lafayette Christian. He decommitted. He was here. He actually saw
- 9:28Speaker 5: a video come in last night. Like I said, it
- 9:30Speaker 5: was a receiver and offensive lineman from Ole Miss that
- 9:32Speaker 5: decommitted yesterday. So it's going to be a fast and
- 9:35Speaker 5: furious forty eight hours. I know you guys are just
- 9:38Speaker 5: you're twenty four to seven on the recruiting I'm joking.
- 9:41Speaker 5: I'm like, that's going over. I think the interesting and
- 9:44Speaker 5: then you know what sort of quarterbacks. This is a
- 9:46Speaker 5: different sort of quarterbacks which he's looking at. You know,
- 9:49Speaker 5: there's all these rumors out there Seller is going to
- 9:52Speaker 5: put himself in the transfer portal. You're going to get
- 9:54Speaker 5: a top tier quarterback that wants to come. Chamberliss up
- 9:59Speaker 5: at ole Miss has requested for another year. Yeah right,
- 10:03Speaker 5: and hasn't been approved for that. So it's it's gonna
- 10:05Speaker 5: be a fascinating month of December before we get to.
- 10:07Speaker 4: The port Yeah.
- 10:07Speaker 7: That's the thing about with this lane higher. It brings
- 10:10Speaker 7: so much excitement from the offensive side of the ball.
- 10:13Speaker 7: You're gonna have You're gonna be able to cherry pick
- 10:15Speaker 7: a quarterback in the transfer portal. You're certainly gonna be
- 10:18Speaker 7: able to cherry pick quarterbacks out of high school just
- 10:20Speaker 7: because of the recent success LSU's had with quarterback in
- 10:23Speaker 7: two heismans in the last six years. And now you're
- 10:26Speaker 7: gonna Addlane kit. I was just kind of looking at
- 10:28Speaker 7: random Lane Kiffin's stats earlier and his last year at
- 10:31Speaker 7: Florida Atlantic. His quarterback was Chris Robinson. Twenty nine of
- 10:34Speaker 7: force two hundred and ninety one a four to seventy
- 10:37Speaker 7: one for thirty seven hundred and one yards, twenty eight touchdowns,
- 10:39Speaker 7: six interceptions.
- 10:41Speaker 4: Florida Atlantic. Not bad, right, And.
- 10:43Speaker 3: You know me, like I usually know everybody, I got
- 10:46Speaker 3: no idea.
- 10:46Speaker 4: Who that fell is?
- 10:47Speaker 7: Chris Robinson? No, that was that was Lane's third year.
- 10:50Speaker 7: I think they went eleven and three. That kind of
- 10:52Speaker 7: like sprung him into the old miss job. So take
- 10:57Speaker 7: that and you look at the like we just brought
- 10:59Speaker 7: up chamber It's like, who who's trying at Chamberlas.
- 11:02Speaker 4: We said it before our game.
- 11:03Speaker 7: I was like, I watched one game of him play
- 11:05Speaker 7: and I'm like, I don't think he's that good. Like
- 11:07Speaker 7: this first game playing, he just wasn't that good. Yeah,
- 11:09Speaker 7: so that's why I went pretty heavy and like this,
- 11:11Speaker 7: she was gonna win this game. The defense is too good. Well,
- 11:14Speaker 7: every single week, kid got better and like I'm not
- 11:17Speaker 7: talking about just like making plays on accident, like being
- 11:20Speaker 7: able to be out athletic people and like someone pops open.
- 11:23Speaker 7: I'm talking about reading one, first, second, third options, tacking
- 11:28Speaker 7: the middle of the field. Like these things that he
- 11:30Speaker 7: did better was absolute quarterback, professional type quarterback play got
- 11:34Speaker 7: better and better every week. And you see that with
- 11:36Speaker 7: Lane kiffin offenses, which is something that we should be
- 11:40Speaker 7: really really excited about.
- 11:41Speaker 5: I think for me, the question offensive side of the
- 11:44Speaker 5: football is the offensive line. I mean this question we get,
- 11:48Speaker 5: you know, are they struggling? Are they they they that bad?
- 11:51Speaker 5: My answer has been No, yeah, to the to the
- 11:54Speaker 5: point how much of it's skiing? Yeah, how much of
- 11:57Speaker 5: it is what they're getting asked to do? And you
- 11:59Speaker 5: guys played more off side of the fuck.
- 12:01Speaker 3: I mean, I mean you know this too though, Like
- 12:03Speaker 3: and Matt pointed out immediately, like the RPO can be
- 12:06Speaker 3: a change up, it can't be your foundation and your
- 12:08Speaker 3: run game, right that gives the offensive line it's a
- 12:10Speaker 3: roads a tool to use.
- 12:12Speaker 7: Yeah, it's not a foundational thing. And scheme is like
- 12:15Speaker 7: one thing. I think people over emphasize the words scheme
- 12:18Speaker 7: a lot because it gets you brought it up already.
- 12:21Speaker 7: The way he designs the first fifteen, the way he
- 12:24Speaker 7: played calls like he's he's telling a story with his
- 12:27Speaker 7: play gone, it's just as not like what we saw
- 12:29Speaker 7: the LSU.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Oh this, let's try this play, Let's try this, let's
- 12:31Speaker 4: try this.
- 12:32Speaker 7: Scheme is one thing, and his scheme is great, but
- 12:35Speaker 7: the way you coach that scheme, Like I could take
- 12:38Speaker 7: two teams that run the exact same place, one team
- 12:41Speaker 7: might be ten times more successful because they do it better,
- 12:44Speaker 7: Like they run their routes for more of a purpose.
- 12:46Speaker 7: I saw LSU blocking their offensive line block this year
- 12:50Speaker 7: with no real rhyme or reason to what they were doing.
- 12:52Speaker 7: Like the coaching techniques they have on the top of
- 12:55Speaker 7: their routes. How they're running steam routes versus cover three
- 12:58Speaker 7: versus cover two, How they run a seam routes for
- 12:59Speaker 7: vers cover one. How they're running comeback routes in different covers.
- 13:02Speaker 7: What they're outside receiver. How how he's releasing versus cover
- 13:06Speaker 7: two with an inside stick route. Like there's different things
- 13:09Speaker 7: I think well coached, well coached schemes, Like I think
- 13:12Speaker 7: the word scheme gets.
- 13:13Speaker 4: You so much, but how it coached coaches.
- 13:15Speaker 7: Yes, basically, there's only so many directions receiver can run,
- 13:18Speaker 7: you guys, And.
- 13:19Speaker 5: That's why I love this talk, because you guys are
- 13:20Speaker 5: offensive guys. But I can tell you one of my
- 13:22Speaker 5: favorite conversations was twenty eleven after LSU beat West Virginia
- 13:27Speaker 5: and I had to do the Last Miles TV show
- 13:29Speaker 5: for the first time, and so that meant least was
- 13:31Speaker 5: going to take a good hour to shower and put
- 13:33Speaker 5: a suit on and.
- 13:34Speaker 4: All different than what we have now.
- 13:35Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, right, I mean the horn's going
- 13:37Speaker 5: off and yeah, and I sat downstairs a friend of
- 13:43Speaker 5: a mutual friend between Dana Holgerson and I when sat
- 13:45Speaker 5: down in Dana and then Shannon Dawson was the OC. Yeah, Hammond,
- 13:48Speaker 5: who's down in Miami now, and you know we're talking
- 13:52Speaker 5: ball and he's talked about that. You know how good
- 13:54Speaker 5: Lsu was defensively, We never see that many big guys
- 13:56Speaker 5: while blah blah, and I asked them some offensive questions,
- 13:58Speaker 5: like Gordy, we really run six or seven plays and
- 14:01Speaker 5: that's all that we run. But I can do five
- 14:03Speaker 5: things out of them, but we run them over and
- 14:05Speaker 5: over and over again, and you know, we had an
- 14:07Speaker 5: eighth play, but we felt like it took too much
- 14:09Speaker 5: time away. And I think that you know, that's when
- 14:12Speaker 5: you hear the simplicity of some of that stuff. So
- 14:15Speaker 5: many times people overthink offenses and just how sharp you know,
- 14:20Speaker 5: Ole Miss runs their stuff, Yeah, precise, And that was
- 14:23Speaker 5: a problem with La Shoe. I mean everything was clunky.
- 14:26Speaker 5: Every nothing smooth.
- 14:28Speaker 7: And that's the thing, Like, that's why people always have
- 14:30Speaker 7: success when they go two minutes before half, like they're like, well,
- 14:35Speaker 7: they haven't done anything all game. They just went down
- 14:37Speaker 7: the field. Well, because two minutes is day one install
- 14:39Speaker 7: and it's stuff that you repped rep repped Oklahoma hit
- 14:42Speaker 7: a big play because what do they what do you
- 14:43Speaker 7: do with the struggling offense? You get you up the tempo?
- 14:46Speaker 7: Oh yeah right, and you confuse the defense and you
- 14:48Speaker 7: run a base you're gonna he hit a seam route
- 14:50Speaker 7: like how many They probably ran that plate ten times
- 14:52Speaker 7: that game already, But you rushed.
- 14:54Speaker 5: And no one the primary route. I mean that was
- 14:56Speaker 5: he just came back to tier, did a nice shot.
- 14:58Speaker 4: He saw it.
- 15:00Speaker 3: And also the thing about Lanes offense that we've talked
- 15:02Speaker 3: about a ton here on the show when we're talking
- 15:04Speaker 3: about old mess, but certainly we'll get more into it.
- 15:07Speaker 3: The thing I love about the run portion of it
- 15:09Speaker 3: is he wants to run the football and he's very
- 15:11Speaker 3: diverse in.
- 15:12Speaker 4: The run game.
- 15:12Speaker 3: It's not going to be inside zone eighty nine percent
- 15:15Speaker 3: of the time. It's going to be power which LSU
- 15:18Speaker 3: football didn't run one this year, which is fascinating to me.
- 15:22Speaker 3: We couldn't go a series without running a power when
- 15:24Speaker 3: we played counter, inside, outside zone, stretch lead, I mean,
- 15:28Speaker 3: everything's up.
- 15:30Speaker 5: One thing I would say, one critique I've always had
- 15:32Speaker 5: for Kiffin's offenses. His quarterbacks take hits. Yeah, I mean,
- 15:35Speaker 5: Matt Corrall Dart got to us, was limping, ran it
- 15:40Speaker 5: for like eighteen nineteen times at Tennessee. Jackson Dart took hits.
- 15:44Speaker 5: You know, Champ is not a big guy. I've surprised
- 15:46Speaker 5: the amount of hits he hasn't taken this year.
- 15:48Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:49Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't know if we can blame Kiffin for
- 15:51Speaker 7: Jackson Dart yet. From what we see from Jackson with
- 15:54Speaker 7: the Giant so far, that's fair. That is completely fair.
- 15:59Speaker 8: Uh.
- 16:00Speaker 4: Shout out to Verge Ostbury as well.
- 16:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:02Speaker 3: I mean, Verge had a target, was not going to
- 16:05Speaker 3: be denied, stayed on the target, was calm in the process.
- 16:08Speaker 3: I mean, uh, you know, I had had the chance
- 16:10Speaker 3: to fly up to the to the game with him,
- 16:12Speaker 3: and man, there was no panic. It was smooth sailing
- 16:16Speaker 3: and he felt confident and what was going to go down.
- 16:18Speaker 3: And I was impressed, just you know, sitting a couple
- 16:21Speaker 3: of feet from it and watching it all play out. Gee,
- 16:23Speaker 3: And Verge said he's like, we're gonna get the best
- 16:25Speaker 3: coach in America. And he had one guy and he
- 16:27Speaker 3: honed in on that guy and got the guy.
- 16:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:29Speaker 5: Shout out to Verge as good of friends as he
- 16:32Speaker 5: is with Scott Woodward to go through that and all
- 16:34Speaker 5: the all political and everything else, to stay focused on
- 16:39Speaker 5: that target and being around it. Last weekend at the
- 16:42Speaker 5: down the locker room for you know, the Western Kentucky game,
- 16:45Speaker 5: Buddy felt confident that they were gonna get Kiffin. They
- 16:49Speaker 5: felt like there was Kiffin and in their minds there
- 16:51Speaker 5: was a big enough drop and to be able harder
- 16:53Speaker 5: sell for Drink, who we both like, Yeah right, I
- 16:57Speaker 5: like you like Drink would so I think it's fantastic
- 16:59Speaker 5: football coach. Would it be a hard sell to say, here,
- 17:02Speaker 5: we're gonna pay you Eli eleven million dollars a year
- 17:04Speaker 5: after we've paid Brian Kelly fifty three to fifty four
- 17:06Speaker 5: million to come down here and pay us.
- 17:08Speaker 4: Five everybody let me know what they felt.
- 17:13Speaker 5: I like Drink, I think he's a good coach.
- 17:16Speaker 4: But to your point, it was it was Kiffin. Then
- 17:18Speaker 4: there was a drop and a lot of.
- 17:19Speaker 5: People so I think they were we got to have Kiffin.
- 17:22Speaker 4: We're all in on it, which I can appreciate. You're like, hey,
- 17:24Speaker 4: this is the guy. I'm not going anywhere else.
- 17:26Speaker 3: This is the only direction I'm going in because I
- 17:28Speaker 3: feel confident enough and look, Verge is a new athletic director.
- 17:32Speaker 3: He's been doing you know something here at LSU for
- 17:35Speaker 3: thirty years. After he's done playing like, he's been in
- 17:38Speaker 3: every aspect of the athletic department. He has seen how
- 17:41Speaker 3: things play out. And so yeah, he's new to the
- 17:43Speaker 3: athletic director title, but he's been involved in this for
- 17:46Speaker 3: a long time.
- 17:47Speaker 5: No, absolutely, he's been involved. He has a great relationship
- 17:49Speaker 5: with Jimmy Sexton and kudos to Verge for that. But
- 17:53Speaker 5: it was a fascinating week from everything from Drinkwitz to
- 17:57Speaker 5: taking the Missouri deal. Once once the chips start to
- 18:00Speaker 5: the fall, you felt better and better about Lane coming here.
- 18:03Speaker 5: And I just shake my head at the Auburn situation.
- 18:06Speaker 5: I mean, you know, I mean John Somerrell's wife went
- 18:09Speaker 5: to Auburn. Yeah, I think I believe. Yeah, it's from Huntsville.
- 18:13Speaker 5: Auburn's much a more attractive job. And just apparently John
- 18:17Speaker 5: Cohen wanted them to take DJ Diurkin and staff and
- 18:21Speaker 5: what have you. And when the market is that demand,
- 18:25Speaker 5: you know, you have a low supply of coaches and
- 18:27Speaker 5: you have that much demand on them, and then for
- 18:30Speaker 5: them to pull Alex Golish out at one am. They
- 18:33Speaker 5: made up call it one am on Friday. Hey, would
- 18:35Speaker 5: you take the job. It's kind of a headshaker.
- 18:37Speaker 3: There, I know for some reason, and I've heard from
- 18:40Speaker 3: from all the Auburn folks that like Cohen just never
- 18:43Speaker 3: wanted to fully give himself over to John Sumraw, which
- 18:46Speaker 3: is it's fascinating to me. I mean from what he's
- 18:48Speaker 3: done and multiple remember Troy had kind of falling off
- 18:52Speaker 3: from what we know Troy to be. As soon as
- 18:54Speaker 3: he got there, they started winning games again. So it's
- 18:55Speaker 3: not only a two lane.
- 18:56Speaker 5: There was a gap after Neil Brown left. Absolutely yeah.
- 18:59Speaker 5: I mean he coached Kentucky.
- 19:00Speaker 4: In the sec I was Kentucky doing.
- 19:02Speaker 5: And even waiting this late no idea. Look be happy
- 19:08Speaker 5: we got Lane Kiffen and a couple of headshakers. And look,
- 19:11Speaker 5: I love Pete Golding. I think Pete's a great guy.
- 19:15Speaker 5: You know, is that emotional play at this point you
- 19:18Speaker 5: have to give the permanent title, right.
- 19:19Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, he's the head coach.
- 19:21Speaker 3: Is interesting, it is. I mean I played around the
- 19:24Speaker 3: golf of Pete. I like, Pete, you don't even play
- 19:27Speaker 3: I don't play golf.
- 19:28Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I.
- 19:30Speaker 7: Do want to ask you, like I know we're late
- 19:32Speaker 7: for a break here, but like I do want to
- 19:33Speaker 7: ask you the you know there everything kind of rushed
- 19:36Speaker 7: and just everybody nationally except for in Louisiana because we
- 19:40Speaker 7: don't really care because we got our guy. But everyone
- 19:43Speaker 7: natually talking about like the college football schedule and how
- 19:45Speaker 7: it's like because of this, how sloppy this was, how
- 19:47Speaker 7: messy this kind of was, Like, is there any fix
- 19:50Speaker 7: in your mind to the college football just timing of
- 19:54Speaker 7: signing days and is there any fix that anyway to get.
- 19:57Speaker 5: This to move something? Are you're going to have every year?
- 20:00Speaker 5: I know every year when it comes down to you know,
- 20:04Speaker 5: now we're seeing it for the first time that the
- 20:06Speaker 5: signing day is on the Wednesday after the last regular season,
- 20:09Speaker 5: before the championship game. Yeah, the transfer portal is where
- 20:12Speaker 5: it is right there. I mean you're forcing coaches hands
- 20:16Speaker 5: right down, disrupting seasons and ultimately the biggest loser of
- 20:19Speaker 5: the student athletes. Yeah, I mean student athletes. And you
- 20:22Speaker 5: know you feel for the kids at Old Miss, Yeah,
- 20:24Speaker 5: that are put in that.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Spot we were talking about earlier. Of all people, Rick
- 20:28Speaker 3: Patino had a great point. Yes, he's like, y'all got it.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Messed up in football. That would be like us getting
- 20:33Speaker 3: the one seed in March before the March madness and
- 20:36Speaker 3: then saying we got to go. It's the same thing, Like,
- 20:39Speaker 3: that's what you're telling these coaches, because, like LS, you
- 20:42Speaker 3: wasn't gonna wait until January, No, couldn't. You got to
- 20:45Speaker 3: have a leader, right, You had to have a leader
- 20:47Speaker 3: for signing day. You had to, like you don't want
- 20:49Speaker 3: to have an interim coach, no matter who it is,
- 20:51Speaker 3: for six seven, eight weeks, right, So you had to
- 20:54Speaker 3: have a leader in place to get everything moving in
- 20:56Speaker 3: the right direction.
- 20:57Speaker 5: Coming back to Pete Golden, and he very well may
- 20:59Speaker 5: do a great job and be the guy at Old Miss,
- 21:01Speaker 5: but almost forces Old missus hand. Yeah, if I don't
- 21:03Speaker 5: stabilize this ship right now, I've got recruits coming on Wednesday,
- 21:06Speaker 5: I've got this game that's coming. I'm trying to hold
- 21:09Speaker 5: this team together. I got a transfer portal. I almost
- 21:12Speaker 5: have to make a play right now.
- 21:14Speaker 4: Yep, for sure.
- 21:15Speaker 3: Gee appreciate it, brother, it's been a it's.
- 21:17Speaker 4: A long day studio.
- 21:18Speaker 5: Yeah, it was great.
- 21:19Speaker 4: Anything it look warmer last time I saw you? What's
- 21:22Speaker 4: it look warmer?
- 21:23Speaker 5: Thanks a lot, By the way, I took my fifteen
- 21:26Speaker 5: year old son. So I took Jackson Alumnia, and I'm
- 21:29Speaker 5: getting crushed right now because his seats were in section two.
- 21:32Speaker 5: Twenty eight. He made it the halftime. He made it
- 21:36Speaker 5: the half time. Twenty eight was the upper up. Absolutely,
- 21:38Speaker 5: he went back to the pre party and sure kid
- 21:42Speaker 5: was shriveled. And so if I get a call for
- 21:44Speaker 5: child abuse or something today, I might need you all
- 21:46Speaker 5: to bail me.
- 21:47Speaker 4: Yeah, hey, I'll vouch for you. They vouch for you.
- 21:49Speaker 3: I'll actually I'll throw it on Lou and the equipment
- 21:51Speaker 3: staff or not getting him a parking.
- 21:52Speaker 5: It's his fault.
- 21:53Speaker 4: It's all Low and Maule. It's their fault. Do you
- 21:56Speaker 4: appreciate it? Brother? All right, we'll take a break.
- 21:58Speaker 3: We do have Ross Dellinger joining us in about ten
- 22:01Speaker 3: minutes from now. I mean Ross had this story covered.
- 22:03Speaker 3: I mean he was boots on the ground in Oxford.
- 22:05Speaker 3: So looking forward to that conversation with our guy Deli
- 22:08Speaker 3: coming up in ten minutes more OTB when we come

- 24:11Speaker 3: have those same things for Christmas, for New Years and
- 24:14Speaker 3: all the great traditions we have during the holiday season.
- 24:16Speaker 3: I mean, today's a Monday. You know what we do
- 24:19Speaker 3: here on Mondays in Louisiana. Food Yeah, what kind of food?
- 24:25Speaker 4: Good food? Alandra Mondays in Louisiana.
- 24:28Speaker 6: Red Beans.
- 24:29Speaker 4: Yeah, thank you, welcome.
- 24:31Speaker 3: I'm glad one text AND's paid attention the whole time.
- 24:34Speaker 6: You've been here longer than me.
- 24:36Speaker 3: Wow, dev I'm sorry if you heard that. I know
- 24:38Speaker 3: that probably just hurt your heart, but yes, we red
- 24:41Speaker 3: beans here on mondays.
- 24:43Speaker 7: Oh, my god, that's a terrible take, I said, I
- 24:47Speaker 7: prefaced it with all due respect, with all due.
- 24:51Speaker 6: Respect, my god, respectfully, that's a trash opinion.
- 24:56Speaker 4: Thank you for the same. Respectfully, I appreciate that. No,
- 25:02Speaker 4: we'll not get mad at.
- 25:02Speaker 7: You, so I said respectfully because you said respectfully, So
- 25:07Speaker 7: that works. Sorry, dev I respect those that love it.
- 25:13Speaker 7: Giving you my opinion. I'm entitled to it.
- 25:17Speaker 3: Real quick here, like I said, we are going to
- 25:19Speaker 3: get to Ross Dellinger Yahoo, who was literally boost on
- 25:24Speaker 3: the ground and had most of the updates here during
- 25:27Speaker 3: this link given situation in the SEC and we mentioned
- 25:31Speaker 3: some of it with Gordy there. But just a quick
- 25:33Speaker 3: recap of what happened with the coaching carousel. So Ryan
- 25:38Speaker 3: Silverfield goes from Memphis to Arkansas, Alex Golish goes from
- 25:42Speaker 3: South Florida to Auburn, John summer All goes from Tulane
- 25:47Speaker 3: to Florida, Pete Golden goes from defensive coordinator to head
- 25:51Speaker 3: coach at ol Miss and Mark Stoops, which you'll hear
- 25:57Speaker 3: a little bit later on. And Mark Stoops is my guy, okay,
- 26:02Speaker 3: but he gotta let go a Kentucky. So you know
- 26:04Speaker 3: what that means there's gonna be a eulogy for Mark Stoops.
- 26:09Speaker 3: St Bob would say, I don't know if I get
- 26:10Speaker 3: through it, but I can't even say it.
- 26:12Speaker 7: I can't even say it. Don't don't do that to yourself.
- 26:15Speaker 7: The questions we got a lot of show left we
- 26:17Speaker 7: was Kentucky doing though that?
- 26:18Speaker 6: Why would you wait until everybody already know their coaches?
- 26:24Speaker 6: That's wild?
- 26:24Speaker 3: Well for sure, Yeah, but the summer all part, like
- 26:28Speaker 3: he played linebacker there, Yeah, like he would have I
- 26:32Speaker 3: would assume love to go back to where he played,
- 26:36Speaker 3: and he was one of the hotter names on the
- 26:37Speaker 3: coaching trails.
- 26:38Speaker 4: So I don't.
- 26:40Speaker 3: I think Kentucky is a good job. We like, you
- 26:43Speaker 3: can do enough to win there. The expectations are set
- 26:48Speaker 3: eight wins and you're like, I mean, that's why Mark
- 26:51Speaker 3: Stups was the most tenured SEC coach before yesterday.
- 26:54Speaker 7: I think a lot of times, like when we when
- 26:56Speaker 7: we're fans of something like the Kentucky fans, in any
- 27:00Speaker 7: fan of any college or pro team or whatever it is,
- 27:02Speaker 7: I think you take for granted, like people in the
- 27:04Speaker 7: high seats, like you're always like, you know what, they
- 27:07Speaker 7: know what they're doing. They got it under control. Like
- 27:10Speaker 7: when I got to the NFL, that's what I thought too.
- 27:11Speaker 7: I know other people in the NFL, they got it
- 27:13Speaker 7: under control. You soon realize like nobody has anything under control,
- 27:17Speaker 7: Like nobody really knows what they're doing in any job.
- 27:19Speaker 7: They're just trying to figure it out as they go, right.
- 27:22Speaker 7: That can be said for anything the higher ups in
- 27:24Speaker 7: any business, government, certainly university athletic programs. Like you think
- 27:30Speaker 7: people take it for it when you have all these
- 27:31Speaker 7: followers and so many highs on something and everybody's like
- 27:34Speaker 7: they got it, they know what they're doing, let's just
- 27:36Speaker 7: let them do it.
- 27:37Speaker 4: But when you see things like this, you.
- 27:39Speaker 7: Just realize that people really don't know what they're doing. Yeah,
- 27:42Speaker 7: all the way across the board and that. And you
- 27:44Speaker 7: see that with Kentucky right now, like there's no rhyme
- 27:46Speaker 7: or reason, there's no explanation for it. The people in
- 27:49Speaker 7: charge screwed that one up. Yeah, big time.
- 27:54Speaker 3: All right, So there is a report real quick here
- 27:58Speaker 3: and it's what we talked about here. After talking with
- 28:02Speaker 3: Blake last night, it does look like he is l
- 28:05Speaker 3: SUDFS coordinator. Blake Baker will stay on staff and baton
- 28:09Speaker 3: rouge I'm trying to see who had this first. CBS Sports,
- 28:17Speaker 3: CBS Sports. He know, CBS Sports knows.
- 28:20Speaker 4: Yeah. Like I said, when Blake told me that last night,
- 28:22Speaker 4: I'm like, if you get my hopes would be real bad?
- 28:28Speaker 4: Can we play?
- 28:31Speaker 3: I would look, I would assume with this news like
- 28:33Speaker 3: it's pretty much like yeah. I mean because because Blake
- 28:37Speaker 3: and that staff have a really good relationship on that
- 28:40Speaker 3: side of football.
- 28:40Speaker 4: So this is incredible news.
- 28:44Speaker 3: Blayane Kiffin, Blake Baker, Let's ride, Let's ride.
- 28:49Speaker 4: Are you kidding me? That's awesome.
- 28:51Speaker 7: I'm so excited. That was like the one thing we
- 28:53Speaker 7: wanted all coaches, any coach coming in. We kind of
- 28:56Speaker 7: understated it here because we didn't really know. Yep, oh,
- 28:59Speaker 7: here we go, come on, turn up.
- 29:01Speaker 4: Lake Bankers staying baby per CBS.
- 29:07Speaker 8: Ooh, I'm.
- 29:12Speaker 4: He does.
- 29:12Speaker 6: Yeah, that's like the most shocking thing I've learned about you.
- 29:15Speaker 3: I know he's always had some different music tastes, but
- 29:18Speaker 3: like a funky Friday, this guy's all for it.
- 29:20Speaker 4: My music taste is very eclectic, guys. I mean, we
- 29:23Speaker 4: gotta take a break, same.
- 29:24Speaker 3: But celebrate everybody, all right, Ross Dellinger When we come
- 29:27Speaker 3: back here on otb off the bench. All right, we
- 29:32Speaker 3: are so excited to tell you about the new Valley's
- 29:35Speaker 3: Baton Rouge. I mean, this thing is incredible. You will
- 29:38Speaker 3: not notice what it used to be when you walk
- 29:41Speaker 3: in there. And it doesn't matter how many times you've
- 29:43Speaker 3: been in there, because Matt and I did a lot
- 29:45Speaker 3: of events there.
- 29:45Speaker 4: It is not a distant cousin to what it used
- 29:48Speaker 4: to be.
- 29:49Speaker 3: It got an upgrade and it is really something that

- 30:48Speaker 3: This is off the bench, all right, welcome back in
- 30:55Speaker 3: OTV here live from the Raisin Caine Studio. It's always
- 30:59Speaker 3: our pleasure to welcome on our next guess it is
- 31:02Speaker 3: our guy, Ross Dellinger. Yahoo's sports at Ross Dollinger's to
- 31:06Speaker 3: handle on social media. And hopefully you were following him
- 31:10Speaker 3: over the last couple of days because he was all
- 31:12Speaker 3: over Lane Kiffin and him finding his way from Oxford
- 31:15Speaker 3: to Baton Rouge.
- 31:16Speaker 4: Delli, what's going on? Brother? How you doing good? How
- 31:19Speaker 4: are you all good?
- 31:20Speaker 3: Do we have you back home yet? Like, are you
- 31:22Speaker 3: actually able to go back home? I know you were
- 31:24Speaker 3: boots on the ground there in Oxford. Like, where in
- 31:26Speaker 3: the world is Ross Dellinger right now?
- 31:29Speaker 9: I'm right down the street from me, buddy, I'm in Uge.
- 31:33Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 31:34Speaker 4: You in the bushes?
- 31:34Speaker 9: Yeah yeah, no bushes, no bushes right now?
- 31:38Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 31:38Speaker 9: Three three three cities, three days, one coach.
- 31:44Speaker 3: I actually, you know what, as soon as I asked that,
- 31:46Speaker 3: I was like, there's no way my man's back home.
- 31:48Speaker 3: He's probably right here in Baton Rouge and so well,
- 31:51Speaker 3: I'm glad I'll get to see you a little bit
- 31:53Speaker 3: later on today. Ross this entire time, I mean, again,
- 31:57Speaker 3: you did a fantastic job covering it and kind of
- 32:00Speaker 3: going over every detail. Now, it always felt like it
- 32:03Speaker 3: was LSU because LSU was very confident and everybody you
- 32:07Speaker 3: talked to felt like they had a really good grasp
- 32:10Speaker 3: on how it was going to play out. But you
- 32:12Speaker 3: never know in coaching searches, certainly in college football, and look,
- 32:15Speaker 3: you don't know with Lane and the situation that he
- 32:18Speaker 3: was in. So as you're covering this, like, what was
- 32:20Speaker 3: your thought maybe throughout the entire time, Like did you
- 32:23Speaker 3: think that it would get to where he got and
- 32:25Speaker 3: actually get to the finish line? You know, you never know.
- 32:33Speaker 10: With Lane, you never know, And I think that was
- 32:39Speaker 10: sort of Lshoe's worry. I think LSUE officials were pretty confident.
- 32:48Speaker 9: Since probably about a.
- 32:51Speaker 10: Week and a half ago.
- 32:53Speaker 9: I think they got really confident that Lane would be
- 32:58Speaker 9: coming after the after the season, and but you just
- 33:03Speaker 9: sort of never know, and I don't I don't necessarily
- 33:06Speaker 9: think anything was signed, but there was sort of a
- 33:12Speaker 9: I think kind of a wink and a nod, maybe
- 33:15Speaker 9: as far back as a week and a half ago
- 33:17Speaker 9: that that he was very seriously considering this and probably
- 33:23Speaker 9: gonna end up coming.
- 33:25Speaker 10: But but again, you are talking about a very unpredictable person, and.
- 33:34Speaker 9: And so there were there were some plenty of LSU
- 33:37Speaker 9: officials who, especially during and after the Egg.
- 33:40Speaker 10: Bowl last Friday, were worried that there could be some
- 33:45Speaker 10: kind of change of change of heart and all that.
- 33:49Speaker 9: So there was always that in the back of think
- 33:52Speaker 9: everybody's mind in Baton Rouge.
- 33:56Speaker 10: But he obviously followed through in.
- 34:01Speaker 9: The meeting Saturday night, where I wasn't quite in the bushes.
- 34:06Speaker 9: I was in my car and I was in a
- 34:07Speaker 9: parking lot looking over the bushes, I guess you could
- 34:10Speaker 9: say at the Chancellor's house where they were meeting. It
- 34:13Speaker 9: was after that meeting that really things got more finalized.
- 34:18Speaker 9: Elis scheduled at the two planes to come down and
- 34:22Speaker 9: come up and pick him up in Oxford, so everything.
- 34:24Speaker 10: Sort of kind up.
- 34:25Speaker 9: That's when you sort of knew that that Saturday night
- 34:28Speaker 9: that it was.
- 34:29Speaker 4: A definite.
- 34:31Speaker 7: Rossty like as messy as everything kind of seemed to
- 34:35Speaker 7: be from us just kind of watching from the outside,
- 34:38Speaker 7: do you think that, Yeah, of course Lane wanted to
- 34:41Speaker 7: be here and that was that was pretty understood as
- 34:44Speaker 7: everything kind of unfolded throughout this whole process in the
- 34:46Speaker 7: last couple of weeks. But do you think that he
- 34:48Speaker 7: honestly believed he was going to get the opportunity to
- 34:51Speaker 7: continue to coach his team even though he was going
- 34:53Speaker 7: to leave.
- 34:56Speaker 10: I do.
- 34:57Speaker 9: I do, which is for many hard to believe because
- 35:04Speaker 9: I don't know that when I called round and talked
- 35:07Speaker 9: to agents and coaches and other athletic directors around the country,
- 35:12Speaker 9: there's not many, if any at all, that would allow
- 35:15Speaker 9: a coach who's leaving for a conference rival to continue
- 35:20Speaker 9: to coach and a post the team their team in
- 35:22Speaker 9: a in a postseason.
- 35:26Speaker 10: It's it's a.
- 35:26Speaker 9: Different situation than what's going on at Tulane with John
- 35:29Speaker 9: Summer all in Florida, in him getting the coach through
- 35:34Speaker 9: the playoffs that say advanced, we're talking about two bitter rivals.
- 35:40Speaker 10: You know that go This rivalry goes back, you know.
- 35:44Speaker 9: Decades, and it's pretty short of nasty already. And so
- 35:49Speaker 9: I in this it was never going to happen where
- 35:52Speaker 9: he was going to be allowed to coach, and in
- 35:54Speaker 9: Elmus had made that decision a long time ago that
- 35:59Speaker 9: this was not going to happen. And in Lane, I
- 36:00Speaker 9: think that's the last bit tried to convince them of
- 36:04Speaker 9: that in that meeting at the Chancellor's house Saturday night,
- 36:07Speaker 9: to let him do it, to let him coach some
- 36:10Speaker 9: of the players.
- 36:11Speaker 10: I think did want him to stay on and coach.
- 36:13Speaker 10: But again.
- 36:16Speaker 9: I think Lane's in his interview before he left Oxford
- 36:20Speaker 9: yesterday with the ESPN, is that Keith Carter, the ad
- 36:25Speaker 9: at ole Miss, has to live in Oxford and he
- 36:27Speaker 9: has to continue in his job. And I think it
- 36:30Speaker 9: would be difficult for Keith Carter if he allowed a
- 36:34Speaker 9: coach who's leaving for a conference rival to continue coaching
- 36:37Speaker 9: the team. It would be difficult for Keith Carter to
- 36:41Speaker 9: perhaps even remain in his job in Oxford.
- 36:47Speaker 3: Now, Ross, you've covered LSU for long enough, and you
- 36:49Speaker 3: know that, like when you say rivals for LSU, it
- 36:53Speaker 3: kind of changes with generations, like for Flynn and I
- 36:55Speaker 3: like it's Florida like that was our rival.
- 36:58Speaker 4: You know, depending on who you asked.
- 36:59Speaker 3: You could have asked my grandfather he goes tou Lane,
- 37:01Speaker 3: maybe my dad goes Old Miss. My son's probably go Alabama.
- 37:04Speaker 3: So it's forever changing and we talked about for Texas
- 37:07Speaker 3: A and M. It took seven overtimes for that to
- 37:10Speaker 3: become an actual thing because before it felt forced like
- 37:13Speaker 3: for a lot of generations, they're you know, LSU Ole
- 37:16Speaker 3: Miss doesn't mean as much to them as it does
- 37:18Speaker 3: to others. I think this now gives every generation a
- 37:24Speaker 3: reason to call this a true rival and it's a
- 37:26Speaker 3: permanent opponent, Like do you agree with that that? Yes,
- 37:29Speaker 3: they've you know, not liked each other for a long time,
- 37:31Speaker 3: but now this brings everybody to the table.
- 37:35Speaker 4: For sure.
- 37:36Speaker 10: And I think, you know, LSU plays at ole Miss
- 37:41Speaker 10: next year.
- 37:42Speaker 9: And we saw what happened when Lane Kiffen returned to
- 37:46Speaker 9: Tennessee and is maybe his second year, third year in
- 37:51Speaker 9: Oxford when he returned there for the first time since
- 37:54Speaker 9: he had left maybe ten years before, and that was
- 37:57Speaker 9: a ten year gap, and we saw that get pretty
- 37:59Speaker 9: nasty were.
- 38:00Speaker 10: Thrown at him on the field.
- 38:02Speaker 9: You can imagine less than a year later him returning
- 38:06Speaker 9: to Oxford. You know that that's that's gonna be quite
- 38:11Speaker 9: a spectacle. And I think this rivalry up there. If
- 38:17Speaker 9: there was any kind of doubt that there was this
- 38:22Speaker 9: rivalry between these two programs, uh I think.
- 38:25Speaker 10: That's out of the window now. I think that the
- 38:26Speaker 10: Lane has made made.
- 38:28Speaker 9: Sure that in his his sort of actions and words,
- 38:33Speaker 9: that this rivalry will continue on and get.
- 38:39Speaker 10: More intense.
- 38:40Speaker 7: So yeah, ross this old situation has been so polarizing
- 38:43Speaker 7: and it is so glaring because of how this is
- 38:46Speaker 7: all unfolded like it brings. Usually it takes something like
- 38:50Speaker 7: this for change to be brought about. And of course
- 38:53Speaker 7: there's debate all over the country about like how to
- 38:55Speaker 7: fix what's the what's the fix for college football to
- 38:57Speaker 7: scheduling the calendar year college football?
- 39:01Speaker 4: In your mind? What needs to be fixed? And is
- 39:03Speaker 4: it even possible?
- 39:06Speaker 9: Well, it's it's hard. I know everybody wants, uh, you know,
- 39:12Speaker 9: fix is done in the calendar, but it's it's not
- 39:16Speaker 9: that easy and uh And partly it's not that easy
- 39:19Speaker 9: because you have an entity in major college football that
- 39:26Speaker 9: is evolving into a professional entity, but it's still tethered
- 39:31Speaker 9: to higher education in a university, and it's still tethered
- 39:35Speaker 9: to a university's calendar, an academic calendar, And that's what
- 39:41Speaker 9: makes makes things really different difficult. That plus the fact
- 39:45Speaker 9: that college athletics resist the urge to completely evolve professionally
- 39:54Speaker 9: by having a collective bargaining agreement for example, or or
- 40:00Speaker 9: any kind of more binding contracts and things like that
- 40:04Speaker 9: with players, and that that that sort of impacts.
- 40:08Speaker 10: All of this as well.
- 40:09Speaker 9: So I don't know what they can really do. They
- 40:14Speaker 9: have changed a lot in the.
- 40:17Speaker 10: Last few years.
- 40:19Speaker 9: They moved back to transfer portal to January from December,
- 40:22Speaker 9: and they were hoping that that would sort of slow
- 40:28Speaker 9: the what had become an accelerated coaching firing cycle and
- 40:33Speaker 9: firing cycle.
- 40:35Speaker 10: It didn't work, right.
- 40:36Speaker 9: This is the this is the most accelerated it's ever been.
- 40:40Speaker 9: And I think part of the reason behind that is,
- 40:44Speaker 9: you know, despite the transfer porting moving moving to January,
- 40:47Speaker 9: that you know, the signing day is still Wednesday. This
- 40:51Speaker 9: Wednesday is still in the first week of December. And
- 40:56Speaker 9: let's face it, you know, after the season, moves and
- 41:00Speaker 9: player moves and decisions happen, and you're not even if
- 41:04Speaker 9: you put it off to January, the portal opening, that's
- 41:07Speaker 9: still not going to.
- 41:08Speaker 10: Change when players make decisions. So teams are.
- 41:11Speaker 9: Being arranged and remade right now, even when even though
- 41:18Speaker 9: the portal is moved to January.
- 41:22Speaker 3: Cauz Omber, the guy Ross dellens Aer here on OTB
- 41:25Speaker 3: all right, ross last one before we let you go
- 41:29Speaker 3: from a on the field perspective, right, So you have
- 41:31Speaker 3: Lane Kiffin now the offensive staff. There's a report out
- 41:34Speaker 3: there that Blake Baker is going to be retained as well.
- 41:37Speaker 3: So you got Lane Kiffin on one side, Blake Baker
- 41:39Speaker 3: on the other. Do you think in your opinion that
- 41:41Speaker 3: this gets LSU back to where they want to be
- 41:44Speaker 3: as soon as next year?
- 41:48Speaker 9: Well, I think if you just look at the results
- 41:52Speaker 9: of Lane Kiffin in what he's done with programs in
- 41:58Speaker 9: his coaching career, especially the last you know, sort of
- 42:02Speaker 9: few years, you know, you you usually don't have to
- 42:06Speaker 9: wait too long for him to show success. Even even
- 42:11Speaker 9: years ago, at his time at Tennessee and USC UH
- 42:16Speaker 9: they were pretty it was pretty quick success. I mean,
- 42:19Speaker 9: I think his second year at usc won ten games.
- 42:22Speaker 9: His first year at Florida Atlantic he won eleven games.
- 42:26Speaker 9: His second year at ole Miss he won ten games.
- 42:29Speaker 9: His first year at ole Miss was five or five.
- 42:31Speaker 9: It was the COVID year though, so there's a little
- 42:34Speaker 9: bit of an outlier there. So it's virtually everywhere he's
- 42:40Speaker 9: been pretty quickly.
- 42:43Speaker 10: He has taken a team.
- 42:44Speaker 9: To a double digit sort of win mark And you
- 42:49Speaker 9: know he's got the players here on the team now,
- 42:54Speaker 9: but he's certainly going to be recruiting.
- 42:57Speaker 10: To LSU and LSU as we all know, kind of
- 43:00Speaker 10: cruits itself.
- 43:00Speaker 9: And so he will have the best players he's probably
- 43:03Speaker 9: ever had, even though you know he has been at
- 43:05Speaker 9: Tennessee as being at USC and Olmos did a great
- 43:08Speaker 9: job with nil and with player acquisition. But I think
- 43:11Speaker 9: it's safe to say that he'll have the best athletes
- 43:13Speaker 9: he's ever had here.
- 43:15Speaker 10: And so you would think, based on his.
- 43:17Speaker 9: Past success who he would have a lot of success
- 43:20Speaker 9: with those really good athletes. And it's one of the
- 43:22Speaker 9: reasons he took the job.
- 43:25Speaker 3: All right there, He is that guy, Ross Dellinger, I mean,
- 43:27Speaker 3: had this thing covered from every angle.
- 43:29Speaker 4: Does a great job for Yahoo Sports.
- 43:31Speaker 3: As you already know at Ross Dellinger is the handle
- 43:33Speaker 3: Gama follow there on social media. Ross, we appreciate it,

- 43:51Speaker 3: would never my guy was boots on the ground, to
- 43:54Speaker 3: say the least, stopping traffic just sitting there middle road.

- 44:02Speaker 4: camera alone.

- 44:05Speaker 7: in that building, don't pick your nose.
- 44:08Speaker 4: You're gonna get caught. Oh it really was.
- 44:11Speaker 3: I mean shout out to O Gotka. I mean he
- 44:13Speaker 3: did a great job of I mean, you weren't gonna
- 44:16Speaker 3: be in that building.
- 44:17Speaker 4: He wasn't. He wasn't gonna see you. All right, we
