- 1:39Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 1:41Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig
- 1:44Speaker 1: into the dirt. On this bonus episode, we are talking
- 1:48Speaker 1: about this week's brand new episode on Bob Dylan, the
- 1:51Speaker 1: sources that we've used for this episode, which helped us
- 1:54Speaker 1: uncover a wild story about another motorcycle accident that we
- 1:58Speaker 1: weren't able to include in this episode. And of course
- 2:01Speaker 1: your voicemails, your text and more. As always, a whole
- 2:04Speaker 1: lot of rosy. All right, this goes, Let's get into it.
- 2:22Speaker 1: About two or so months ago, I posted a reel
- 2:25Speaker 1: onto Instagram, a short ninety second story about the Paul
- 2:29Speaker 1: is Dead conspiracy theory. This is, of course, the theory
- 2:33Speaker 1: that we covered in part two of our Paul McCartney
- 2:36Speaker 1: episode on the Wild Rock and roll conspiracy the purports
- 2:40Speaker 1: that Paul McCartney died back in the mid sixties and
- 2:43Speaker 1: was replaced by an impostor. Now this theory is, of
- 2:46Speaker 1: course complete and total bunk, and I thought it was
- 2:50Speaker 1: pretty clear in the video that I'm presenting the case
- 2:53Speaker 1: of the conspiracy theorists, not presenting the case as one
- 2:57Speaker 1: that I believe in. My whole tone is like, yo,
- 2:59Speaker 1: there's this thing that happened, and here it is. The
- 3:02Speaker 1: video has been viewed over a million and a half times.
- 3:06Speaker 1: It has about one thousand comments, a lot of them critical,
- 3:09Speaker 1: a lot of them angrily disputing the false claim that
- 3:12Speaker 1: Paul is dead, which to.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Me is so obvious.
- 3:15Speaker 1: I can't understand why animal would waste energy being angry
- 3:19Speaker 1: over it. But then there's also a lot of comments
- 3:21Speaker 1: that sincerely back the theory, which is perhaps even more
- 3:25Speaker 1: shocking to me. We live, as we all know, in
- 3:28Speaker 1: an age where, for better or for worse, information travels
- 3:31Speaker 1: at nearly the speed of light. This is also a
- 3:35Speaker 1: time when our major institutions, the media, the government, academia,
- 3:39Speaker 1: they're more profit driven than ever and as such more
- 3:42Speaker 1: beholden to narrative than they ever were before, and therefore,
- 3:46Speaker 1: I think they're more corrupt than ever. We are lied
- 3:49Speaker 1: to constantly by the very people that we are told
- 3:51Speaker 1: we should trust the most, and we are being lied to,
- 3:55Speaker 1: We're being spun, We're being manipulated by the information that's
- 3:58Speaker 1: flying around us at light speed. And what the hell
- 4:00Speaker 1: are we actually supposed to believe? I can't blame those
- 4:03Speaker 1: who actually do believe that Paul McCartney died, Nor can
- 4:06Speaker 1: I blame those who think that Ditty is innocent, or
- 4:09Speaker 1: that Taylor really loves Travis, or that Bob Dylan actually
- 4:13Speaker 1: did get in a motorcycle accident. Okay, those last two
- 4:16Speaker 1: are at the very least debatable, but my point stands,
- 4:19Speaker 1: what the hell are we supposed to do? How do
- 4:20Speaker 1: we make heads or tails of what we're being told
- 4:22Speaker 1: to believe? Where does the truth lie? The truth of
- 4:26Speaker 1: the story, the real story as it is, is often
- 4:29Speaker 1: a theme in the episodes that we cover. It's part
- 4:31Speaker 1: of this recent Bob Dylan episode, it was certainly part
- 4:34Speaker 1: of the last two Merril Monroe episodes, and it's at
- 4:36Speaker 1: the heart of the Blank one eighty two episode that
- 4:38Speaker 1: I'm currently researching, which is more of an episode on
- 4:41Speaker 1: UFO and UAP disclosure and governmental manipulation of information than
- 4:45Speaker 1: it is on three corep punk and fart jokes. So
- 4:47Speaker 1: you can see why this topic is rolling around in
- 4:49Speaker 1: my head this morning. Has Bob Dylan been building his
- 4:53Speaker 1: own myth for the past half a century plus? How
- 4:56Speaker 1: did Maril Monroe die? Why do people think Ditty is
- 4:59Speaker 1: innocent in the of all the evidence that is right
- 5:01Speaker 1: there in front of our eyes? Is the government running
- 5:04Speaker 1: along Kong on Tom DeLong through manipulation and disinformation? Why
- 5:09Speaker 1: do the American people still to this day trust their
- 5:12Speaker 1: government and the media that is so clearly in its pocket,
- 5:16Speaker 1: despite the historical facts that prove that our most powerful
- 5:20Speaker 1: institution continuously lies and manipulates us. The facts are right there,
- 5:25Speaker 1: the Gulf of Tonkin Project, Mockingbird, the Warren Commission, Watergate,
- 5:29Speaker 1: I ran Contra, blowjobs in the Oval Office, weapons of
- 5:33Speaker 1: mass destruction. And I'm not even going there on the
- 5:35Speaker 1: past two decades of lies For why I'm not just
- 5:38Speaker 1: not going there, I'm not touching it, okay, And I'm
- 5:39Speaker 1: obviously only just talking about the government's last year. But
- 5:43Speaker 1: are our artists and our entertainers any different? Are they
- 5:48Speaker 1: immune from mythmaking? Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Kurt Cobain, Ice Cube,
- 5:54Speaker 1: Taylor Swift? What's real? What's narrative? At the end of
- 5:59Speaker 1: the day that we really care? Do we really care
- 6:02Speaker 1: whether or not Bob Dylan actually got into that motorcycle
- 6:04Speaker 1: accident or do we just care about it being part.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Of his legend, another badass marker on his myth.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Do we really care whether or not Taylor loves Travis
- 6:13Speaker 1: or is it just too good of a romance playing
- 6:15Speaker 1: out in the public eye for us to even question?
- 6:17Speaker 1: Do we really care whether or not Paul is dead
- 6:20Speaker 1: or do we just want to argue about it in
- 6:22Speaker 1: the comments?
- 6:23Speaker 2: I care, I question all of it.
- 6:27Speaker 1: It's a funny thing about this job, About doing all
- 6:29Speaker 1: this research so frequently and so consistently, you start to
- 6:33Speaker 1: see patterns emerge in the historical record, ways in which
- 6:37Speaker 1: certain facts are reported or not reported, what types of
- 6:41Speaker 1: books remain in print and which ones do not, Where
- 6:44Speaker 1: libel and litigation come into play or don't. You start
- 6:48Speaker 1: to be able to read between the lines and ways
- 6:50Speaker 1: you couldn't before, and you start to recognize where certain
- 6:53Speaker 1: facts might not be facts at all, it might indeed
- 6:55Speaker 1: be fiction. Some of an innocent myth making. A lot
- 6:59Speaker 1: of it straight up bullshit. I like to think that
- 7:02Speaker 1: I've developed a pretty serious bullshit detector when it comes
- 7:04Speaker 1: to the facts as they get presented, and a lot
- 7:07Speaker 1: of it is based on historical precedent. If X lied
- 7:10Speaker 1: to us about why ten years ago, then why wouldn't
- 7:13Speaker 1: they be lying to us about Z now?
- 7:14Speaker 2: Sort of thing.
- 7:15Speaker 1: That's just common sense, though, And common sense tells me
- 7:18Speaker 1: that Bob Dylan, the subject of our latest episode, is
- 7:21Speaker 1: one of pop culture's greatest bullshitters. And when it comes
- 7:25Speaker 1: to Bob, I use that term bullshitter with affection. Bob's
- 7:29Speaker 1: lies or myth making is probably a better.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Word for it.
- 7:34Speaker 1: It is far more innocuous than Ditty's, or the government's
- 7:37Speaker 1: or next week's Disgraceland subject R Kelly. Dylan is an
- 7:41Speaker 1: unreliable narrator, and honestly, it's made a more interesting, which
- 7:44Speaker 1: I guarantee is the point. Who wants anything to do
- 7:47Speaker 1: with an uninteresting pop star not me. Bob is an enigma,
- 7:51Speaker 1: He's an idea. Bob Dylan is his very own conspiracy theory,
- 7:56Speaker 1: so much so that I believe that if he were
- 7:59Speaker 1: to hear me say that by some stroke of mad
- 8:01Speaker 1: fortune for yours.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Truly, I think that he would actually.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Appreciate it, because Bob Dylan is and always has been
- 8:07Speaker 1: in on the joke. So this week's question is this,
- 8:12Speaker 1: what story from pop culture are you.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Calling bullshit on?
- 8:15Speaker 1: It can be anything the ones we've mentioned, Bob Dylan's
- 8:18Speaker 1: motorcycle accident, Taylor and Travis's relationship, you can go way back.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Did Buddy Holly's gone actually go off in that plane?
- 8:25Speaker 1: And is that what brought it down? Did Tupac really
- 8:27Speaker 1: die on that night in Las Vegas? Or you can
- 8:30Speaker 1: keep it current. Did did he do it? And let's
- 8:32Speaker 1: think beyond music too, What really was behind Aaron Hernandez's death,
- 8:37Speaker 1: and what was the real reason behind Michael Jordan's eighteen
- 8:40Speaker 1: month hiatus from basketball? Why did Tom Brady take a
- 8:43Speaker 1: hammer to his cell phone? If the flake gate was
- 8:46Speaker 1: all made up? What pop culture stories, explanations, narratives are
- 8:50Speaker 1: you calling bullshit on? What stories have you heard? And
- 8:53Speaker 1: just stepped back and said, nah, something doesn't smell right.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Six one, seven, nine oh six three eight, hit me
- 9:00Speaker 1: on voicemail and text to let me know I'll be
- 9:02Speaker 1: back in a flash. Okay, So a little bit of
- 9:26Speaker 1: an announcement here. We're doing this book club, this Disgraceland
- 9:29Speaker 1: book Club. This to be named Disgraceland book Club. This
- 9:33Speaker 1: popped up, I think I mentioned it in the last
- 9:35Speaker 1: after party, popped up over on the Patreon chat, and
- 9:39Speaker 1: we're going to be doing our first one on June
- 9:41Speaker 1: third at eight thirty pm Eastern Standard time. The book
- 9:45Speaker 1: that we are going to be discussing is the book
- 9:47Speaker 1: that we are currently reading, which is The Talented Mister
- 9:51Speaker 1: Ripley by Patricia Highsmith. Okay, so check that out. I
- 9:55Speaker 1: also want to talk about the movie if you've seen
- 9:57Speaker 1: that as well, because I think it's a really interesting
- 9:59Speaker 1: conversation and which is better.
- 10:02Speaker 2: That's all I'll say about it here. But anyways, we're all.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Going to be on a Zoom I believe zoom or
- 10:07Speaker 1: the Google version of Zoom, whatever that is, and I'm
- 10:10Speaker 1: going to post the details on Instagram shortly and in
- 10:13Speaker 1: the Patreon chat if you're over there, and I'll shoot
- 10:15Speaker 1: it out elsewhere on social media. But again just so
- 10:18Speaker 1: you know, so you hear it here June third, eight
- 10:22Speaker 1: thirty pm Eastern Standard time for our first meeting of
- 10:26Speaker 1: the Disgraceland book Club, which we will be giving a
- 10:28Speaker 1: better name than that at some point. I hope you
- 10:30Speaker 1: can join us. You got a week to read this book.
- 10:33Speaker 1: It's a great book. It's a page turner. You can
- 10:36Speaker 1: definitely do it. If you're just jumping in now, I
- 10:38Speaker 1: encourage you to join us. I'm stoked to talk about
- 10:40Speaker 1: this and other books going forward. All right, let's talk
- 10:43Speaker 1: about the sources right now that we used for this
- 10:46Speaker 1: Bob Dylan episode. Lots of sources for this one. Bob Dylan,
- 10:49Speaker 1: perhaps more than any other musical icon from the last
- 10:52Speaker 1: fifty years, contains multitudes, to quote both Walt Whitman and
- 10:55Speaker 1: Bob himself, who wrote a killer song called I contain
- 10:59Speaker 1: multitudes on his recent album But I'm digressing. So in
- 11:02Speaker 1: order to wrap our hands around all these multitudes, we
- 11:05Speaker 1: consulted the following books. One, The Double Life of Bob
- 11:10Speaker 1: Dylan A Restless, Hungry Feeling nineteen forty one to nineteen
- 11:14Speaker 1: sixty six by Clinton Halen. Clinton Halen is one of
- 11:17Speaker 1: the leading authorities on Dylan. He's written numerous books on Dylan,
- 11:20Speaker 1: including the latest one, which came out a few years ago.
- 11:22Speaker 1: And the cool thing about this book is that it
- 11:24Speaker 1: was written after the author was allowed to sift through
- 11:26Speaker 1: Dylan's personal archive, which Dylan had recently sold to the
- 11:30Speaker 1: George Kaiser Foundation in Tulsa, Oklahoma for something like twenty
- 11:33Speaker 1: two million dollars. Clinton Halen got to check out a
- 11:36Speaker 1: ton of unseen documentary footage recordings Dylan's own writing, a
- 11:41Speaker 1: lot of which changed how he saw Dylan and inspired
- 11:43Speaker 1: him to write this update to take on a very
- 11:45Speaker 1: specific part of Bob Dylan's life, which is his birth
- 11:49Speaker 1: up until his famous motorcycle accident in nineteen sixty six,
- 11:53Speaker 1: which brings me to book number two, this one called
- 11:56Speaker 1: Small Town Talk Bob Dylan, the Band, Van Morrison, jans On,
- 12:00Speaker 1: Jimmy Hendricks and Friends in the Wild Years of Woodstock
- 12:03Speaker 1: by Barney Hoskins. This book focuses on the scene in
- 12:06Speaker 1: the Woodstock area Woodstock, New York, that is, on the
- 12:09Speaker 1: nineteen sixties, which has taken on this near mythical status.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Of course, is the place where Bob Dylan disappeared into
- 12:15Speaker 1: following his mysterious motorcycle accident, and also of course being
- 12:19Speaker 1: the place where the band really became the band, where
- 12:23Speaker 1: they jammed with Dylan and created the Basement tapes in
- 12:26Speaker 1: their own seminal debut. Lots of great details here that
- 12:29Speaker 1: helped us flesh out the second half of this week's episode.
- 12:32Speaker 1: So I encourage you to check out Small Town Talk
- 12:35Speaker 1: by Barniey Hoskins. All Right, The third book is Positively
- 12:39Speaker 1: Fourth Street, named after one of my favorite Bob Dylan songs.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Positively four Street.
- 12:43Speaker 1: The Lives and Times of Joan Bias, Mom, Dylan, Mimmi Bias, Farina,
- 12:47Speaker 1: and Richard Farina by David Hajdu. This book chronicles Bob's
- 12:51Speaker 1: time as a folk musician in New York with Joan Bias,
- 12:54Speaker 1: as well as a relationship with Joan's sister and her husband,
- 12:58Speaker 1: Richard Farina, who at the time was also a soarngwriter
- 13:00Speaker 1: and a poet who also was involved in a motorcycle
- 13:03Speaker 1: accident at the same year as Dylan nineteen sixty six,
- 13:06Speaker 1: but unlike Bob, Richard Farina tragically did not survive his crash.
- 13:11Speaker 1: So why this book? Why am I mentioning?
- 13:13Speaker 2: Well?
- 13:13Speaker 1: One of the biggest takeaways from this book was the
- 13:15Speaker 1: revelation that Dylan was not booed at Newport because he
- 13:19Speaker 1: won electric but because the sound system was shitty and
- 13:22Speaker 1: not designed to handle electric instrumentation, and therefore the audience
- 13:25Speaker 1: could not hear anything. Okay, myth making. You can hear
- 13:28Speaker 1: more about that in the full episode. I encourage you
- 13:31Speaker 1: to check it out if you have not heard it already.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Okay.
- 13:33Speaker 1: And the fourth book, which actually turned out to be
- 13:36Speaker 1: far more useful than we thought it would at first,
- 13:38Speaker 1: is Robbie Robertson's memoir Testimony, which he wrote about seven
- 13:42Speaker 1: years before his death. Robbie Robertson, of course great guitarists,
- 13:46Speaker 1: one of my favorite guitarists, primary songwriter for the band
- 13:49Speaker 1: who were previously known as the Hawks, and who was
- 13:51Speaker 1: there on the front lines of the extremely stressful and
- 13:55Speaker 1: combative tour that Dylan embarked on in the UK in
- 13:58Speaker 1: nineteen sixty six. Robbie's got incredible insights into that life,
- 14:02Speaker 1: including stuff that wasn't available anywhere else. Details about the
- 14:05Speaker 1: party in the Melbourne hotel, about how everyone was concerned
- 14:07Speaker 1: about Bob's health, how he was subsisting solely on tea, honey,
- 14:12Speaker 1: lemon and pills, pills which Robbie described as smoother than
- 14:15Speaker 1: dexiest Benny's black beauties, that they were half upper, half down,
- 14:19Speaker 1: or just very specific, very vivid. This book is also
- 14:23Speaker 1: where we get the story about Johnny Cash hiding out
- 14:25Speaker 1: in the closet of Bob Dylan's London hotel room, and
- 14:27Speaker 1: about how Dylan went catatonic after the final show of
- 14:30Speaker 1: that UK tour at the Royal Albert Hall, and how
- 14:33Speaker 1: he and Dylan's manager Albert Grossman had to put him.
- 14:35Speaker 2: In a bath to help him get back to reality.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Okay, so many great books and they all helped us
- 14:41Speaker 1: paint this picture of the man who contains multitudes. So
- 14:45Speaker 1: what did you think? Which parts about Dylan's life do
- 14:49Speaker 1: you believe? Do you disbelieve? What part of the motorcycle
- 14:52Speaker 1: accident's story do you.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Think is actually true?
- 14:55Speaker 1: Do you think it went down the way that we
- 14:57Speaker 1: described it into the episode, or do you have other thoughts?
- 15:00Speaker 1: Let me know six one seven, nine oh six sixty
- 15:03Speaker 1: six three eight. Just like this person from the three
- 15:07Speaker 1: three four.
- 15:09Speaker 3: Greeting disgraced land down Low in the nine two to oh,
- 15:14Speaker 3: I hope y'all keep through playing these historic deaths from
- 15:20Speaker 3: all of those who care. My first year wedding anniversary
- 15:25Speaker 3: to my wonderful wife was darkened by the day Michael
- 15:31Speaker 3: Jackson died and we ate our wonderful steaks watching the news.
- 15:38Speaker 3: The second one that hit my wife harder was George
- 15:44Speaker 3: Michael's death on Christmas Night. The one that hurt me
- 15:51Speaker 3: the most was Robin Williams.
- 15:54Speaker 2: He made me.
- 15:56Speaker 3: Last and I knew that depth in despair, which makes
- 16:03Speaker 3: me cry.
- 16:05Speaker 4: Rock and rolla.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Yeah, Tom Petty. Tom Petty's death touched a lot of people,
- 16:10Speaker 1: messed a lot of people up. I know, for me,
- 16:15Speaker 1: I was lucky. I've said this before. I get to
- 16:16Speaker 1: see him right before he died, pretty much a couple
- 16:18Speaker 1: months before that, and I feel very, very lucky for it.
- 16:22Speaker 1: A lot of people have called in as well, and
- 16:24Speaker 1: they've left voicemails mentioning Michael Jackson. And that makes me
- 16:27Speaker 1: think about the conversation we're having right now. There's some
- 16:30Speaker 1: smoke around Michael Jackson's death and what the cause of
- 16:33Speaker 1: death actually was, and I wonder if you guys have
- 16:36Speaker 1: any hard thoughts about that. Did we get the right story?
- 16:39Speaker 1: I tend to think we did, but I've heard a
- 16:42Speaker 1: lot of people sort of think otherwise. And this has
- 16:46Speaker 1: come I've seen stuff online, obviously, but I've heard stuff
- 16:50Speaker 1: in private too that kind of shocked me, but that's
- 16:54Speaker 1: happened to me in the past two I hear things
- 16:55Speaker 1: in private that shocked me and I think, no way,
- 16:57Speaker 1: that's that's happened.
- 16:58Speaker 2: And then boom did he? So there we go, all right?
- 17:01Speaker 1: Seven eight one rights and hey Jake, it's Kelly from
- 17:04Speaker 1: the seven eight one. I think Johnny Cash's cover of
- 17:06Speaker 1: Hurt is better than Nine Inch Nails. I love the
- 17:09Speaker 1: nine inch Nails version also, but the way he did
- 17:11Speaker 1: that song at the end of his life after everything
- 17:13Speaker 1: he'd been through, brings tears to my eyes still to
- 17:15Speaker 1: this day. Great cover. Thank you Disgraces my favorite podcast
- 17:18Speaker 1: of all, and I do shout it out to everyone
- 17:20Speaker 1: that I come in contact with. Love you keep up
- 17:22Speaker 1: the awesome work. You're truly the best.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Kel Kell and the seven eight one You rock, and
- 17:26Speaker 2: I think I agree with you. I really do. I think.
- 17:29Speaker 1: I don't know if we talked about this before, guys,
- 17:31Speaker 1: but I really that cover in particular. We have this
- 17:35Speaker 1: songgoing conversation about which covers are better than the originals,
- 17:37Speaker 1: and I think that one really really personifies the cover
- 17:42Speaker 1: that's better than the original, which is Johnny Cash's version
- 17:45Speaker 1: of Trent Residor nine inch nails is hurt so for
- 17:48Speaker 1: sure eight six four rights and Hi Jake, it's Laney
- 17:51Speaker 1: celebrity musician deaths that affected me deeply. Taylor Hawkins and
