- 0:00Dot com Welcome to that daily quote, the podcast designed to
- 0:07kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:10I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to
- 0:13you by the Great News Podcast because good news should be
- 0:17heard. Listen, we're all fine.
- 0:19Podcasts are found. And for your convenience, the
- 0:22link is in the show notes. Today's quote comes from an
- 0:26unknown author. It captures something that
- 0:29Oliver Berkman, journalist and author of the best selling book,
- 0:334000 weeks, Time Management for Mortals.
- 0:37He spent an entire book trying to help people understand this.
- 0:41The quote is this. There is a difference between a
- 0:44life that is full and a life that is crowded.
- 0:48Knowing the difference is a form of wisdom, Those two words full
- 0:54and crowded. In a way, they sound identical,
- 0:59and yet they describe completely opposite experiences of being
- 1:03alive. A crowded life is packed with
- 1:06obligations, commitments, notifications to do, lists that
- 1:10never shrink in boxes that never empty, and the relentless sense
- 1:15that you're always behind. It's busy in the way that a
- 1:19traffic jam is busy. There is some movement, but very
- 1:23little progress, and an undercurrent of low grade
- 1:26exhaustion and anxiety that never quite goes away.
- 1:30A full life, on the other hand, is something else entirely.
- 1:34It's rich with meaning, connection, depth, and the quiet
- 1:39satisfaction of spending your time on things that actually
- 1:42matter to you. It may contain fewer things than
- 1:45a crowded life, but everything in it has weight and purpose.
- 1:51Berkman's central argument is that productivity is a trap.
- 1:56Becoming more efficient just makes you more rushed, and
- 2:00trying to clear the deck simply makes them fill up again faster.
- 2:04The day will never arrive when you finally have everything
- 2:08under control, even if you have the best notion template.
- 2:13Believe me, I tried that. That's the crowded life in a
- 2:16single paragraph, and most of us are living it, convinced that if
- 2:22we could just get on top of things, fullness would follow.
- 2:27But Berkman shows us that it never does, because the harder
- 2:30you struggle to fit everything in, the more of your time you
- 2:34end up spending on the least meaningful things.
- 2:37The shift from crowded to full requires something most
- 2:40productivity advice never mentions the willingness to say
- 2:44no, to accept that every decision to use a portion of
- 2:48time on anything represents the sacrifice of all the other ways
- 2:53you could have spent that time. In economics, this is called
- 2:58opportunity cost, and when you understand that opportunity cost
- 3:02is a real cost, you can more easily decide without
- 3:07reservation on what matters most to you.
- 3:11The full life isn't one with more in it, it's one with the
- 3:14right things in it. I can tell you from experience
- 3:17that crowded doesn't feel full. It feels frantic.
- 3:21That busyness is real, but so is the emptiness underneath it.
- 3:26Berkman asks the question in his book 4000 Weeks.
- 3:30What would it mean to spend the only time I ever get in a way
- 3:34that truly feels like it counts? That question has a way of
- 3:40sorting things out very quickly between what's filling your life
- 3:44and what's crowding it. So here's the question.
- 3:48Is your life full right now, or is it crowded?
- 3:52Because knowing the difference, as the quote says, is a form of
- 3:56wisdom, and acting on the difference and choosing depth
- 4:00over volume, meaning over busyness.
- 4:06If you write things over the many available ones, that's
- 4:10where a full life actually gets built.
- 4:13Not by adding more, but by finally being willing to leave
- 4:16some things out. That's it for today.
- 4:19I'm Henry Gibborn, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 4:24tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 4:29with another daily quote.
