- 0:00Western civilization has a distinct bias in favour of what
- 0:05we may call a materialistic viewpoint.
- 0:08Money, possessions, status and power based on monetary power, a
- 0:15drive to own ever newer possessions, and the need to try
- 0:19to increase our enjoyment and satisfaction of life through
- 0:23these factors leads those born into Western civilization to
- 0:27consider that having a good job, amassing wealth and buying
- 0:31things constitutes the basis of enjoyment.
- 0:37This viewpoint has infiltrated most of the world by now, so
- 0:40that the predominance of the materialist outlook on life is
- 0:43almost, but not quite universal. To be sure, to live in the
- 0:49modern world, a certain amount of concern for material
- 0:52well-being is important. The question that arises,
- 0:56however, is whether this concern should be all consuming or
- 1:02whether it needs to be balanced with other viewpoints and other
- 1:06value sets in the way we go about making life choices and
- 1:10allocating our time and attention and determining what
- 1:14our actual goals can and should be.
- 1:18Should we allow the materialistic viewpoint, for
- 1:21instance, to represent the central purpose of our lives?
- 1:26Or is there perhaps another significance for which material
- 1:30stability is helpful, but which nevertheless needs to take a
- 1:35more central role in our life goals, objectives, and
- 1:39satisfaction? Our very way of judging the
- 1:43value of everything is tainted by a reference to its monetary
- 1:47value rather than being viewed on a scale that is not based in
- 1:51material valuation. Concerns in a world that is
- 1:56quickly experiencing what is known as the 6th planetary die
- 2:00off in large part caused by our valuing material wealth above
- 2:05having a clean and healthy environment and forcing everyone
- 2:10to focus on accumulating and enjoying wealth rather than
- 2:14living a more balanced life in harmony with the rest of the
- 2:17people and other beings on the planet and keeping the needs of
- 2:22the environment itself in mind. We seem to be creating
- 2:26consequences that are playing out in terms of imbalance in
- 2:30resource access and allocation, the consequent breaking out of
- 2:35wars and mass migrations, deterioration of our natural
- 2:39environment, and increasing impacts of both climate change
- 2:44and pollution on our very health and well-being, our genetic
- 2:48integrity, and the spread of ever more virulent disease
- 2:53vectors. If we destroy the land, the air,
- 2:59the water, and the ability of people to live harmoniously
- 3:03together, are we really better off?
- 3:07That is, unfortunately, what our current fixation on material
- 3:11wealth is forcing us to grapple with.
- 3:15If we look to other civilizations of the past and
- 3:19from other parts of the world, different values have come to
- 3:22the fore that dealt with creating a community of caring
- 3:27and mutually supportive people in some cases, or focused on
- 3:32spiritual growth and development in other cases.
- 3:36Some cultures supported expression of our deepest
- 3:38feelings and sentiments through art or music.
- 3:43Some developed deep philosophical or religious
- 3:46reflections that motivated large numbers of people to focus their
- 3:50lives on issues other than pure material satisfaction.
- 3:56The question is not an either or decision, but more of a
- 4:01balancing of our need for material stability and
- 4:04well-being with an appreciation of and development of values
- 4:09that go beyond the physical and vital needs and desires to
- 4:13address the higher and larger capabilities that humanity has
- 4:18within its nature and its future development.
- 4:23The Mother writes. Quote Throughout this teaching
- 4:28of the Dhammapada, there is one thing to be noticed.
- 4:31It is this. You are never told that to live
- 4:35well, to think well is the result of a struggle or of a
- 4:40sacrifice. On the contrary, it is a
- 4:44delightful state which cures all suffering.
- 4:47At that time, the time of the Buddha, to live a spiritual life
- 4:52was a joy, a beatitude, the happiest state which freed you
- 4:58from all the troubles of the world, all the sufferings, all
- 5:02the cares, making you happy, satisfied, contented.
- 5:10It is the materialism of modern times that has turned spiritual
- 5:14effort into a hard struggle and a sacrifice, a painful
- 5:18renunciation of all the so-called joys of life.
- 5:23This insistence on the exclusive reality of the physical world,
- 5:27of physical pleasures, physical joys, physical possessions, is
- 5:33the result of the whole materialistic tendency of human
- 5:36civilization. It was unthinkable in ancient
- 5:40times. On the contrary, withdrawal,
- 5:44concentration, liberation from all material cares, consecration
- 5:50to the spiritual joy that was happiness.
- 5:53Indeed, from this point of view it is quite evident that
- 5:58humanity is far from having progressed, and those who were
- 6:01born into the world in the centers of materialistic
- 6:04civilization have in their subconscient this horrible
- 6:09notion that only material realities are real, and that to
- 6:14be concerned with things that are not material represents a
- 6:17wonderful spirit of sacrifice and almost sublime effort.
- 6:23Not to be preoccupied from dawn to dusk and from dusk to dawn,
- 6:28with all the little physical satisfactions, is to bear
- 6:32evidence of a remarkable spirit. One is not aware of it, but the
- 6:37whole of modern civilization is built on this conception.
- 6:42Ah, what you can touch, you are sure that is true.
- 6:47What you can see, you are sure that is true.
- 6:51What you have eaten, you are sure you have eaten it.
- 6:55But all the rest, Pooh, we are not sure whether they are not
- 7:00vain dreams, and we are whether we are not giving up the real
- 7:04for the unreal, the substance for the shadow.
- 7:08After all, what are you going to gain?
- 7:12A few dreams? But when you have some coins in
- 7:15your pocket, you are sure that they are there, and that is
- 7:20everywhere, underneath everything.
- 7:23Scratch the appearance is just a little.
- 7:25It is there within your consciousness and from time to
- 7:30time you hear this thing whispering within you.
- 7:33Take care, don't be taken in. Indeed it is lamentable.
