- 0:00Hey everyone, and welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:02culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:05media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:08through Thursday. My name is Annabelle, and I am
- 0:10your Wednesday Mini Scroll host and also the deputy editor of
- 0:14the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:16So before we get into the stories today, I do have a
- 0:19little anecdote that I wanted to share with you guys at the
- 0:22request of Lauren and Alex, who works on Centennial World's
- 0:26partnerships. So if you aren't interested in
- 0:28that, feel free to skip ahead. There are time stamps in the
- 0:30description, but for those of you who are interested, last
- 0:34Friday I actually had a belated birthday dinner with my family
- 0:38because my birthday was earlier this month and my mom decided
- 0:42that it would be a fun idea to order cupcakes for everyone.
- 0:45And since it was my birthday, she thought it would be fun to
- 0:49ask the bakery to screen print some pictures of me on the
- 0:53cupcakes. She didn't ask the bakery to
- 0:55just print a photo from my Instagram.
- 0:57No, instead she prints the thumbnail of the first mini
- 1:02scroll episode that I did a couple weeks ago.
- 1:04I'll include a picture for those of you who are watching.
- 1:06She also did ask the bakery to print goats on the cupcake
- 1:10because I am a Capricorn. So that's just a little bit of
- 1:13an insight into my life and that my mom is enjoying all of your
- 1:16comments so please continue leaving them.
- 1:19She loves reading them as do I. Other than that, Please remember
- 1:22to rate, review, and subscribe to Infinite Scroll.
- 1:24As Lauren is saying, we are on the road to 1K Spotify star
- 1:29reviews, so if you haven't already, leave a review.
- 1:31Thank you so my first story is a little bit of news coming out of
- 1:35Tumblr in that the platform launched Tumblr TV.
- 1:39So last week we spoke about how meta launched edit, which is
- 1:41essentially a cap Cut Copy and how X introduced a tab in the
- 1:45bottom bar of the platform to make short form video easier to
- 1:48access to US users. Obviously, this is all very
- 1:51suspicious timing given the United States is still settling
- 1:55from the TikTok ban, but Tumblr, with this new launch has also
- 1:59joined in and is possibly part of the race to take TikTok spot.
- 2:02So if Tumblr TV sounds familiar to you, you aren't entirely
- 2:06wrong. 10 years ago, Tumblr launched a GIF search engine
- 2:09with the same name. But it wasn't just a search
- 2:11engine, it also allowed users to view GIFs in full screen mode.
- 2:15Quote The TV part of the feature title refers to the fact that
- 2:18the interface offers player controls like pause, play,
- 2:22forward, and backwards. Sarah Perez wrote for Tech
- 2:24Crunch at the time. However, it was announced last
- 2:26week that Tumblr TV will now be rolled out on a more extensive
- 2:30scale. According to support.tumblr.com,
- 2:32new users will have this tab enabled by default, while
- 2:35existing users will have it available in the Dashboard tabs
- 2:38configuration if not already enabled.
- 2:40Obviously, we can't separate this from everything that's
- 2:42going down with TikTok, especially because, according to
- 2:45recent reporting from TechCrunch, Tumblr had a surge
- 2:48of users joining the platform on the day of January 19th, which
- 2:51is of course the day TikTok was meant to be banned.
- 2:54The blogging service saw roughly a 35% increase in app installs
- 2:59and a 70% increase in new users joining communities, which is a
- 3:03feature that allows users to join groups focused on specific
- 3:06interests. Think of it like a subreddit or
- 3:08maybe a Discord server. We did do a deep dive covering
- 3:11Tumblr last year, which covered the rise and the fall of the
- 3:14platform, so if you are interested in that, definitely
- 3:17feel free to check it out. But part of the conclusion we
- 3:20came to in that episode was that Tumblr was having a little bit
- 3:23of resurgence among Gen. Z.
- 3:25According to a 2022 article for The New Yorker, Internet culture
- 3:29Journalist Kyle Chaker highlighted that quote, 48% of
- 3:32Tumblr's active users and 61% of its new ones are Generation Z.
- 3:36And this, of course, came at a time when many major social
- 3:40media platforms were worried about how to keep this
- 3:42generation engaged. And what we thought
- 3:45distinguished Tumblr from other platforms at this time was its
- 3:48departure from the typical trend of platforms copying each
- 3:51other's features. Obviously, that has changed a
- 3:53little bit since then with this update.
- 3:54But as Chaker noted, Tumblr appeared to focus on the unusual
- 3:58pursuit of preservation of its original form.
- 4:01Like I've said before, I am not entirely sure if anything will
- 4:03actually replace TikTok. I don't think we can expect an
- 4:06app to just fully take its place in terms of short form video.
- 4:09But that doesn't mean there won't be another culture driving
- 4:12platform. I'm not sure if that platform
- 4:14will be Tumblr. I would kind of love if it was.
- 4:16I mean, Tumblr definitely had its issues, but there is a sense
- 4:18of nostalgia there for older genders.
- 4:20And on top of this, a sense of anonymity on the platform is
- 4:23definitely refreshing to those of us who have been online our
- 4:26whole lives. That being said though, Perez
- 4:29for TechCrunch maintained that it isn't a true contender for a
- 4:32TikTok replacement quote. Though the company made many
- 4:34improvements while the service was a labs feature, including
- 4:37the addition of lightbox support, improved scrubbing and
- 4:40video support, the final product doesn't feel all that much like
- 4:43TikTok, where the original creative content dominates.
- 4:46Speaking of TikTok, I do have a quick TikTok update as far as
- 4:50what is going on in the United States regarding the sale.
- 4:52It was reported earlier this week that AUS based search
- 4:55engine startup called Perplexity AI presented a new proposal to
- 5:00Byte Dance, which is obviously Tik Tok's parent company.
- 5:02And apparently this proposal aligns closer with what the
- 5:05Trump administration requested for a sale.
- 5:07From what I could find, this was first reported by CNBC and in
- 5:10the document which was reviewed by the media company, the
- 5:13proposal detailed the creation of a new US holding company
- 5:17called New Co. The proposal would allow the US
- 5:19government to own up to half of that new structure once it has
- 5:23made an initial public offering of at least $300 billion.
- 5:26I will remind you that Trump did mention in a Truth so post that
- 5:30he would like to see a joint venture with at least 50% U.S.
- 5:34government ownership. And while there have been many
- 5:36bids for TikTok, this is a little bit different because
- 5:39this is a merger rather than a purchase.
- 5:41Given that By Dance has made it clear time and time again that
- 5:44they will not sell the platform, journalists seem to think that
- 5:46there's a better chance this time around.
- 5:48On top of this, the proposal would also exclude TikTok score
- 5:52recommendation algorithm, which By Dance would keep.
- 5:55The algorithm has been a key reason why the company has been
- 5:58hesitant to sell the platform, with reports describing the
- 6:01algorithm as quote one of the platform's most valuable assets
- 6:05and the quote secret source, according to reporting by the
- 6:08New York Times around what would get by dance to sell.
- 6:12They do note that any sale or divestiture of TikTok would have
- 6:15to comply with China's rules on technology exports, and that
- 6:19means that the Chinese government has to approve
- 6:21certain technologies. Quote Beijing claimed the last
- 6:24word in any deal involving TikTok when it updated the list
- 6:27of restricted technologies in 2020 to include systems like the
- 6:31Apps algorithm, which recommends a constant stream of short
- 6:34videos targeted to keep people scrolling.
- 6:36To be honest, the algorithm is definitely what makes the app
- 6:39valuable and the reason why so many people love TikTok.
- 6:41So who's to know what a sale without the algorithm would do
- 6:45to the app in the US? Nevertheless, perplexity is one
- 6:48of multiple entities and individuals buying to save
- 6:50TikTok. Lauren already covered that
- 6:52Mister Beast is among them, but some other companies have thrown
- 6:57their hat in the ring, reportedly including Microsoft
- 6:59and Oracle. President Trump does seem pretty
- 7:02confident. He did mention on the weekend
- 7:04that he would likely have a decision on the app's future in
- 7:07the next 30 days. The next story is actually a
- 7:09trend that I've been seeing making the rounds on TikTok, and
- 7:11this is all the discourse around cute winter boots.
- 7:15So many TikTok users are making videos talking about their
- 7:18quote, cute winter boots. But spoiler alert, they actually
- 7:21aren't talking about boots. This phrase has become A to
- 7:25discuss any resistance or frustration with the newly
- 7:28inaugurated Trump administration.
- 7:29There seems to be a mix of themes popping up in the videos
- 7:32around cute winter boots. Some feature people diving into
- 7:36the details about protests, often with scraps of paper in
- 7:40hand to show the details. Others are discussing ways to
- 7:43keep people safe from ICE, which is short for US Immigration and
- 7:47Customs Enforcement, by referring to ice as ice cream
- 7:49trucks. So there is really a little bit
- 7:51of everything. But the reason I wanted to talk
- 7:53about this is because it's just the latest example of algo speak
- 7:56that we are seeing taking over the platform.
- 7:59I am sure you guys are familiar with the term algo speak, but if
- 8:03you aren't, it is generally understood as code words that
- 8:06are used to avoid content moderation tools that might flag
- 8:09user content that violate community guidelines or might be
- 8:12seen as sensitive in nature. Some of the most popular words
- 8:15in algo speak include phrases like unalive for kill or at the
- 8:19beginning of COVID when everyone was talking about the pandemic,
- 8:22but they would use any word that started with P like Panini or
- 8:26panorama. There are a lot of mixed
- 8:28opinions about algo speak online.
- 8:30Some people believe that it is a savvy way to get around the
- 8:33algorithm and talk about certain important topics, while others
- 8:36say that this sort of language can lead to miscommunication,
- 8:39undermine important issues, and just become too confusing for
- 8:42people who aren't totally invested in the space.
- 8:45I mean, you can see this in the comment sections under videos
- 8:47talking about cute winter boots. I even saw one comment that was
- 8:50like, I'm employed. What does this mean?
- 8:53Nevertheless, we have seen seen algo speak before, obviously,
- 8:56and I can't help but wondering if this is poised to become even
- 8:59more popular, especially as social media platforms and their
- 9:02executive increasingly aligned with specific political agendas.
- 9:06I wouldn't be surprised if this is the case.
- 9:08I also wouldn't be surprised if content moderation tools become
- 9:11more sophisticated and able to target popular forms of algo
- 9:16speak. But one thing that I found
- 9:18interesting to this episode of Algo speak specifically is a
- 9:21point that I saw in a Fast Company article which noted that
- 9:24quote. The cute winter boots trend also
- 9:27exploits the platform's algorithm which favours product
- 9:30focused content to maximize visibility.
- 9:32While part of this is definitely the phrasing and the choice of
- 9:35using cute winter boots as the code word, I've also seen it in
- 9:39the way that creators are linking to TikTok shop.
- 9:42They obviously aren't linking boots, but they are linking
- 9:45various educational items like books.
- 9:47So I wonder if this is what we'll see more and more of if
- 9:49content moderation tools become more sophisticated to this form
- 9:53of discourse online. The last thing I wanted to
- 9:55quickly mention was Deepseek. Now this story might be a little
- 9:59bit tech bro vibes for mini scroll, but I thought I would
- 10:02just mention it because it has literally been everywhere over
- 10:04the past few days. And also I will just note that
- 10:07this is quite a high level summary because this is a
- 10:09complicated story. What has gone down is that
- 10:12global tech stocks have taken a tumble after Chinese AI company
- 10:16Deepseek revealed it can develop powerful AI tools that challenge
- 10:20market leaders like ChatGPT, but at a way lower cost.
- 10:23Deepseek was founded in 2023 and recently released a new AI model
- 10:27which is open source, meaning the code is designed to be
- 10:31publicly accessible. As reported by Fast Company
- 10:33Quote, the latest version of Deepseek called Deepseek V3,
- 10:37appears to rival and in many cases outperform Open AI's
- 10:40ChatGPT. Deepseek can also be used for
- 10:42free online, and if you give it a search, you'll see that its
- 10:45interface looks very similar to other large language models like
- 10:49ChatGPT. For context, Deepseek has
- 10:51claimed that it took just two months and cost under $6 million
- 10:54to build an AI model. For a point of comparison, in
- 10:57training ChatGPT 4 Open AI reportedly spent $100 million
- 11:02alone, which is according to Wired in 2023.
- 11:05And why this was such a game changer is obviously the low
- 11:08cost, but also that Deep Seek used far fewer of the high cost
- 11:12AI chips that companies have typically used in the past.
- 11:15In the Garbage day newsletter by Ryan Broderick.
- 11:18This podcast is literally going to become a Ryan Broderick
- 11:21update account at this point because he is just always saying
- 11:24what I want to say but better. But he kind of positioned deep
- 11:28seek in a bigger picture and also made a comparison to TikTok
- 11:32quote. If the 2000 and 10s was the
- 11:34story of American tech platforms eating the world, then the
- 11:37twenty 20s has been the story of Chinese platforms biting back in
- 11:40a big way. Not just because users have in
- 11:42the case of TikTok, like them better or found them more
- 11:45addictive, but because they're also much cheaper.
- 11:47With that being said though, there is a lot of skepticism
- 11:50around the model, but on the whole American tech giants are
- 11:53very stressed. So much so that there have even
- 11:56been comparisons to the space race in that who is going to
- 11:58create the best AI model. Anyway, that is everything from
- 12:02me today. I am definitely glad to have a
- 12:04more normal episode this week because last week was just
- 12:07everything TikTok ban. And while we can't ignore the
- 12:10TikTok ban full, I'm glad that we could talk about other
- 12:13things. Anyway, I will see you next
- 12:15Wednesday. Thanks.
- 12:16Bye.
