- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith today. Welcome
- 0:03back, family. I am Tracie. I'm going to be your
- 0:05host today and we're going to be diving into
- 0:07a topic that really got me thinking. Whenever
- 0:10me and Derek were on our walk, we were listening
- 0:12to a leadership podcast by John Maxwell and it
- 0:16kind of tipped me off for this kind of podcast
- 0:18because people will not follow what they do not
- 0:21understand is what they said. And so he was talking
- 0:24about in a business aspect, a relation aspect.
- 0:27Now let's spin that. To what I was thinking about
- 0:32and so what if the real reason people don't follow
- 0:35Christ is because they don't actually get him
- 0:37Like they don't understand how someone could
- 0:40love them the way that he does or that his love
- 0:43isn't earned or a checklist None of the good
- 0:47deeds or bad news can change the love that he
- 0:49has for you This sounds like complete craziness.
- 0:53It sounds like complete heresy, right? But stick
- 0:56with me So this is a little high theology and
- 0:59a little low -key hilarious because who doesn't
- 1:02get confused about grace or love? That's free.
- 1:06And so let's unpack it. Okay, so let's do some
- 1:09real talk. How many of you have ever heard the
- 1:11phrase, God loves you, and felt completely confused?
- 1:17Like maybe God's love is this vague magical thing
- 1:20that happens if you don't mess up too badly.
- 1:23Some folks treats God's love like a divine vending
- 1:25machine. They put in prayers, good deeds, they
- 1:28attend church, and bam, out comes salvation.
- 1:33But what does scripture say? It says something
- 1:36totally different. And so John 3 .16 says, for
- 1:39God so loved the world that he gave his only
- 1:41son. Not maybe, not if you're good enough, but
- 1:45for the world. That's y 'all, that's everybody.
- 1:49Yes, even the one with the questionable life
- 1:52choices. The one who thinks that maybe couch
- 1:55potatoing is a spiritual gift. The person that
- 1:59did something last night that they were not supposed
- 2:01to. The one that turned up in the club last night.
- 2:03The one that may not be in the situation where
- 2:05they need to be in. The issue? People don't get
- 2:10this love because they've never seen it lived
- 2:12out simply, clearly, or without strings attached.
- 2:17And they misunderstand it because sometimes the
- 2:19church acts like love. comes from terms and conditions.
- 2:25And so, you know, whenever we do these podcasts,
- 2:29you know, we try to make it lighthearted and
- 2:31funny, too, because theology without humor is
- 2:35can just be real dry, kind of like a salad without
- 2:38any salad dressing. So if you can imagine God
- 2:40was a vending machine, you drop in your prayers,
- 2:43you drop in your good deeds and a few, I'm sorry,
- 2:45coins and then press a button labeled love. but
- 2:49instead love pops out a celery stick or a kale
- 2:52chip and I'll give you a fun fact Gia loved kale
- 2:56chips whenever she was little and we have so
- 2:58many funny videos of her eating kale chips but
- 3:02you're standing there like I I hit the love button
- 3:05and I got a celery stick that's not exactly what
- 3:08I'm going for and so sometimes we treat God's
- 3:12love like it's something that we have to earn
- 3:14and We have to order it just right. But God's
- 3:19love, it's like someone paid for the whole snack
- 3:23bar up front. And the best part is it's the freshest,
- 3:27the most nourishing love that you could ever
- 3:29need is ready to go. No coins required. And that's
- 3:34the amazing part, the beautiful truth that we
- 3:36want to get across. And so now for a quick theology
- 3:40moment, the word love often used in the New Testament
- 3:44is agape. That's a selfish, sacrificial, unconditional
- 3:48love. Agape love doesn't look for what you can
- 3:52get in return, it just gives. That's God's love
- 3:55in a nutshell, and here's why it's so hard to
- 3:57understand. It goes against our natural human
- 4:00instincts. We love with conditions. We often
- 4:04say, I'll love you if. But God's agape love says,
- 4:07I will love you even when you don't. And I choose
- 4:11you first. People miss this because their minds
- 4:14struggle to grasp love that's not earned. Love
- 4:18isn't given freely. It's countercultural, it's
- 4:22counterintuitive, and frankly counter to how
- 4:27most relationships work here on earth. And so
- 4:30let's do a quick check -in. And so if you've
- 4:33ever felt God's love was complicated or conditional,
- 4:37you're not alone. But here's the good news. God
- 4:40loves you exactly where you are. No need to fake
- 4:43it or earn it. You're loved. Period. Let that
- 4:50sink in. You are loved. No matter what you've
- 4:55done. He already knew about it and He still chose
- 4:58you for today. He still woke you up for today.
- 5:02And for those saints out there, He loves those
- 5:06that you don't like either. That you have questions
- 5:09about and you're mad at them because they're
- 5:11they say that they're this and they're doing
- 5:13that and they're acting out and they're you know
- 5:15Yes, they he loves them, too and so Whenever
- 5:20we dive into John Maxwell's little nugget that
- 5:23he gave me people will not follow what they do
- 5:25not understand Here's why that it matters so
- 5:28much for whenever we're talking about God imagine
- 5:30trying to follow someone who mumbles instructions
- 5:33in a language that you don't speak and keeping
- 5:37points into different directions You're not gonna
- 5:40be able to follow that and you know You're saying
- 5:43like go left and he's pointing to the right and
- 5:46like he's speaking in German And you only know
- 5:48Spanish and so you're not gonna follow that you'd
- 5:51be like never never mind. I'll just use my GPS
- 5:53People won't follow unless it makes sense They
- 5:57won't follow a leader unless the leader is clear
- 6:00and many folks don't understand Jesus because
- 6:03He's complicated And it's not that he's complicated.
- 6:07They just think that he is. He's actually quite
- 6:09simple when you get to the heart of it. But often
- 6:13churches make following Jesus sound complicated
- 6:15and loaded with rules. You got to do this. You
- 6:18got to do this. But Jesus was really big on clarity.
- 6:23Come to me, all who are weary in Matthew 11 28.
- 6:27If people don't understand that Jesus loves radically
- 6:31and unconditionally, they won't trust him enough
- 6:34to follow. And Maxwell's principles are foundational
- 6:38here. If people don't really get what you're
- 6:41about, they'll bail. Applied to faith, if people
- 6:45don't understand how Jesus loves and why he died,
- 6:49they won't follow. So many people think that
- 6:52faith equals rules instead of relationship. They
- 6:55think of religious versus relationship. When
- 6:59grace feels conditional and freedom is lost.
- 7:03So what's the takeaway? Why must we make Jesus
- 7:08understandable, not dumbed down, but accessible,
- 7:13and unpack the radical grace -filled love and
- 7:15invite the relationship and not a religious checkmark?
- 7:22How many times have you explained the gospel
- 7:24to someone and that person says, how many good
- 7:27works do I have to do to get into heaven? Friends,
- 7:31if heaven had a scoreboard, I'd ask for a spectator
- 7:34pass, but Jesus doesn't do that. He flips the
- 7:37script. No scoreboard. No trying to keep the
- 7:40rules. No points required. There's no currency
- 7:44that you can give him that would buy his love.
- 7:47And here's the wild thing. The love that Jesus
- 7:50showed by giving up paradise to come down and
- 7:53die for us. Can you wrap your head around that?
- 7:57That isn't casual love. It's radical, sacrificial,
- 8:01and mind -blowing. Someone who is so crazy about
- 8:05you that they walked into death so they could
- 8:08give you a second chance Many don't follow Jesus
- 8:11because the love seems unbelievable Why would
- 8:15someone love me that much doesn't he know what
- 8:18I did? I said this I did that I even just last
- 8:22night I had to sneak out of someone's room all
- 8:25the things and he there's nothing that you can
- 8:27hide from he does he already knows And that's
- 8:32the heart of today's talk. God's love is so great.
- 8:36He gave his only son so we could be made right.
- 8:39Sacrifice proves love isn't what you have to
- 8:43do. And if we remember the prodigal son, he ran,
- 8:47the father ran and wrapped him in love and threw
- 8:49a party, not because he earned it, because we
- 8:51know that he didn't. He went out and spent all
- 8:55the money and walled out and did all the things.
- 8:58But because he returned home, Jesus' loves is
- 9:03unearned, relentless, and joyful. That love changes
- 9:07everything. You're not climbing a ladder of good
- 9:09enough. Jesus reaches down and lifts you up.
- 9:13Think if you had to go buy love in a store, you'd
- 9:16be in the clearance aisle waiting for a sale
- 9:18because it's so expensive. But Jesus' love is
- 9:23always on stock. There's no price tag. There's
- 9:28no expiration date. But if we want others to
- 9:31follow Jesus, we must help them understand this
- 9:34love love that costs everything is worth following
- 9:39and so you guys know that I love meat and and
- 9:43so what and so we're at a barbecue and Jesus
- 9:47is out there at the grill. He's flipping the
- 9:50burgers He's loving on everybody the choir kids
- 9:53the doubters the skeptics and even the party
- 9:55crashers And someone asked, why love those people?
- 10:00They don't even smell that great. Jesus laughs
- 10:04because I'm them. I get them. I'm crazy about
- 10:10them. God's love is relational and not transactional.
- 10:16That's about who you are to him, not what you
- 10:21do. So trying to explain that to someone who
- 10:24thinks that love is a legal contract? I love
- 10:27you, but if? No! God says, I love you. Period.
- 10:34Make love understandable by showing it in everyday
- 10:37ways. Love without strings. Be patient without
- 10:42doubts. And humor helps. When people laugh, they
- 10:46relax. It's easier to hear the good news then.
- 10:51Someone once said loving like Jesus is being
- 10:57a salad at a barbecue. Maybe it's not everyone's
- 11:00favorite, but it's refreshing if you try it.
- 11:05And so that said, be the lemonade in someone's
- 11:13life. Just love them for who they are and that
- 11:16refreshing. Like I don't have to earn this like
- 11:19you're gonna be my friend no matter what like
- 11:22all this stuff and it really is a Refreshing
- 11:29and then and that way they can literally see
- 11:32it And so what does that mean for us today so
- 11:37we've unpacked it people don't follow what they
- 11:39don't understand Jesus is radical love and how
- 11:42to make love clear So what does it mean now?
- 11:49And so we have a mission to show Jesus, not just
- 11:52in talk. If people don't understand his love,
- 11:55preaching won't help. They need love modeled
- 11:58in their real life. This means patient with awkward
- 12:01questions, grace when people mess up, listening
- 12:05more than preaching, and loving unconditionally.
- 12:10It's hard sometimes, but Maxwell says clarity
- 12:14and examples keeps followers. You're messengers
- 12:19of the greatest love ever. The love flowing freely,
- 12:25not based on performance. And so the challenge
- 12:28this week is I find someone who might not understand
- 12:31God's love fully. Don't preach, show love. Simple,
- 12:38real, and joyful. Love that's clear. and opens
- 12:44hearts. Followers grow. Jesus' love transforms
- 12:49lives. And remember, love is never wasted. Every
- 12:53act of kindness, each moment choosing love over
- 12:56judgment matters. Keeping love, understanding
- 13:00and sharing Jesus' heart, the love that cost
- 13:04everything but given freely is huge. So how about
- 13:12we make Jesus's love visible to people and that
- 13:17way they understand because we love to see things
- 13:20We love to be something tangible to hold on to
- 13:23and so they can see What Jesus's love is and
- 13:27if we are overflow Because we are we are loved
- 13:31by him. We need to love others And so, I would
- 13:36love to pray for you this week. Thank you guys
- 13:37so much for listening. If this message impacted
- 13:40you, if you know someone that doesn't know Christ
- 13:44or just isn't following Christ, send this to
- 13:47them. You know, leave us a comment, help our
- 13:50podcast grow, and we would love to pray for you.
