- 0:02This is an Unspoiled Network podcast. This is spoil Me, covering one piece
- 0:11episodes four ninety eight through five hundred, Lufy becoming an Apprentice, a man
- 0:17who fought against the King of the Pirates, the battle against the Big Tiger,
- 0:21who is going to be captain, and freedom taken away? The Noble's
- 0:26plot closing in on the brothers. In these episodes. There is a lot
- 0:34going on here, but the main thing that I think is going to be
- 0:37preoccupying all of us is the threat of the fire that is scheduled to completely
- 0:44eradicate everybody. And I mean, is this that far from the truth?
- 0:52Welcome to spoil Me, Welcome to the show everyone. I am Natasha.
- 1:15Thank you very much to Florian for commissioning this episode. Yeah, y'all,
- 1:21this got me thinking, you know, like, there are some story beats
- 1:26that I think a decade ago would have felt more outlandish to me than they
- 1:34do now. Even though the story beats are cartoonish, I have grown to
- 1:40realize that we do actually live in a world of cartoonish evil. In a
- 1:47lot of ways. It's different than what I thought cartoonish evil was. I
- 1:51used to think that being cartoonishly evil was like one of those silent film villains
- 1:57twirling his mustache as he ties a girl to the train tracks, and that
- 2:02still is a version of cartoonishly evil. But in this case, what I
- 2:08mean is these people are we find out aware this fire is scheduled to happen,
- 2:19and I think that the fact that they all react as like no,
- 2:23no, no, it's a good thing. Yes, it's over the top.
- 2:28It is cartoonish. And I'm not saying that's exactly how it would be
- 2:30in real life, but I am saying that it may as well be like
- 2:38that in real life for how much we give a shit and do the right
- 2:42thing instead. That's really where I'm coming from. So I will back up
- 2:46and I will talk about things from the first of these three episodes, but
- 2:50you know, I have to just talk about this like the The issue here
- 2:59is the fact that we have a problem with as a society of trying to
- 3:06make it like our main problem is that law enforcement can't stop all the crimes
- 3:15that it should. That if only people weren't so bad, so irreversibly bad,
- 3:24we wouldn't have to treat them the way that we do. But that's
- 3:30human nature, and there's something very grim about that outlook anyway, But it
- 3:36leads to this very interesting sort of personality divide that I think is sort of
- 3:43fundamental to where you fall on the political spectrum. And if you are somebody
- 3:46who believes that people are mostly the worst and mostly lying liars who will con
- 3:57you if they can to get a free ride, you're more likely to be
- 4:01conservative with that mindset versus somebody who believes the best, like as do I
- 4:10think that we are ninety percent good. No, I believe we are about
- 4:15sixty percent good fifty five. But I think that's enough to justify being optimistic
- 4:19and hopeful and to want everybody to have what they need to survive without feeling
- 4:26like there need to be qualifications for that. And what happens with these people
- 4:32who believe the worst of humanity is if you do wind up getting more of
- 4:43the pie, if you wind up in a position of privilege, what you
- 4:48do to justify the fact that you now have this privilege is you convince yourself
- 4:57you deserve it and the people who don't have it do not deserve it.
- 5:01You have to do that second one, because it's one thing to think that
- 5:05you deserve it, but then comes the natural second thought for me anyway,
- 5:10Well, do you think they don't. But the thing is a lot of
- 5:13people don't realize they're setting up this dichotomy in their brain to make themselves feel
- 5:19better, and that it's not necessarily grounded in anything, because they don't want
- 5:24to admit that they have this privilege to begin with. Folks just ignoring privilege
- 5:30and acting like it's not a real thing are a dime a dozen. So
- 5:34what you have to do is you have to buy into the mentality of more
- 5:42people being worse than good people, like more a higher percentage of people being
- 5:47terrible than the percentage of people who are decent folks just trying to get by,
- 5:54And you have to create this story in your head about how they deserve
- 6:00to be where they are on the streets, living paycheck to paycheck whatever,
- 6:08that it's their own fault. And this way you can sleep at night.
- 6:13You can tell yourself that you aren't stealing anything from anybody by having this privilege,
- 6:19that it's not a result of putting other people down and actively enforcing their
- 6:25oppression and putting them into positions where they feel the desperate need to do whatever
- 6:30they can, which creates crime. You can't tell yourself that you are indirectly
- 6:36responsible for the crime as much as the criminals in a lot of ways.
- 6:43So you have to tell yourself those people are all bad, all of them
- 6:49are threats, and we would be better off without them. And this is
- 6:56where you get gated communities. And you know, the more I think about
- 7:00it and the way that things are working with the celestial dragons wearing these helmets
- 7:04so that they're not even breathing the same air as everybody else, it's like
- 7:10a teeny tiny gated community. They're living inside with their suit you know,
- 7:15which I know that I've had these theories about whether they take their helmets off
- 7:18and there's like suddenly they shrivel up and die out of contact with the regular
- 7:25air. But seeing it as teeny tiny little gated communities that they're just walking
- 7:30around inside is very, very funny. So I think I'm just gonna keep
- 7:33with that. And I want to point when people like to illustrate my point
- 7:41about how this thing with the fire is like feels like not that big an
- 7:46exaggeration. There are two things that I want to point to. The first
- 7:50one is the history in the United States of either the government or in dependent
- 8:00parties that grow like grouped together in a mob, deciding to burn down entire
- 8:05black neighborhoods. And this is like shockingly common and something that we really don't
- 8:11like to talk about in this country. But there are whole financial districts that
- 8:20were like the idea that black people have been a press up into slavery.
- 8:26They got free, and then they have just been struggling this whole time because
- 8:31they are so far behind. It's understandable why we think that, but it
- 8:35actually isn't that much of a straight line. They were freed, they were
- 8:41given for the first time access to some opportunities, and they hustled so fucking
- 8:46hard that they actually began to succeed a lot earlier than you would think.
- 8:52And we had like black men being elected to high positions in the government because
- 9:00they hadn't yet figured out jerrymandering and voter suppression, and so early on black
- 9:07folks were becoming successful and white folks really had a problem with that, and
- 9:15so they literally physically destroyed these districts, the records, the goods, the
- 9:24homes, the money, and reset them back to zero basically. And we
- 9:31have done that so many times all over the country. I believe even Central
- 9:37Park is an example. So this idea of like basically firebombing the place isn't
- 9:46actually that far off at all in terms of undesirable elements that we want out
- 9:52of here. The motivation may be slightly different, but it's the fundamentally the
- 9:56same. And then if we're going to bring it up to the present day,
- 10:01let's talk about homelessness and the ways in which we hide the homeless.
- 10:09If we are going to be as a city hosting a big event, and
- 10:13this was a really big deal last year when Biden was going to go visit
- 10:20San Francisco. I think it was San Francisco, with their skyrocketing cost of
- 10:24living and housing crisis, has like some of the highest percentage of unhoused people
- 10:33in the United States. As a city, homelessness is skyrocketing everywhere because of
- 10:39this housing crisis. But San Francisco already had such like a premium housing market,
- 10:46and then with the fact that the Silicon Valley like boom happened there,
- 10:52it was just a perfect storm to make everything almost unlivable like in a short
- 10:56time. So President Biden was going to go visit for his campaign trail thing,
- 11:05and they tried to pass an ordinance basically saying that they could level ten
- 11:13cities that were set up by the homeless because there are so many. They
- 11:18don't know what to do. They don't have the housing to put up all
- 11:24these people. And finally a judge had to come in and be like,
- 11:28uh huh no, no, you can't just do that. You can make
- 11:33them move to clean the street and keep things accessible for people, but you
- 11:39can't just fucking like force them out or destroy things. And even with this
- 11:46being said by this judge, there are so many stories from homeless people talking
- 11:52about cops coming in and literally pissing all over their stuff. They have like
- 11:58six items their name, and the cops think it's funny to just like destroy
- 12:05what they have. There's a video that went around several years ago of a
- 12:07cop literally shitting into two pieces of bread and giving it to a homeless man
- 12:13as a sandwich as a joke. This is how they are treated. And
- 12:18Biden's coming and we can't let him see this. So what do they do
- 12:24do They use a tiny fraction of the budget they're using to make the town
- 12:30look prettier to buy some cheap hotel rooms and put these people in them.
- 12:35Of course not, they just bar them. They just keep them from getting
- 12:39into certain certain areas. So these folks are left in the outskirts of this
- 12:45main area, sleeping under literally under bridges and overpasses and stuff. And it
- 12:54was November, guys, We're getting into like the cold part of the month,
- 13:00and this was what they were forcing these people to do. And the
- 13:05disgusting quality of this, like, I'm not going to try and solve the
- 13:13problem. I just don't want our president to see the problem. Can we
- 13:20just stop and think about that for a second. It's like you're going to
- 13:26see a doctor, because the president is supposed to be somebody that knows about
- 13:31these problems and is prepared to deal with them, right, So it's like
- 13:33you're going to see a doctor and you have this huge lesion on your face
- 13:39and you just decide you're gonna put makeup over it and not mention it.
- 13:43Like this man's whole job is supposedly serving us, and we are meant to
- 13:52hold him accountable for a lot of things. If these people have no place
- 13:58to live, it is his failing and yours in you know, much more
- 14:03directly, but still let him see what is real? What are you doing?
- 14:11But it's just sheer pride, the sheer inconvenience of the privileged people who
- 14:18have money and jobs stepping over somebody when they're on a like a subway platform,
- 14:26and they shouldn't have to do that, So that person needs to get
- 14:28out of the way. And like, I'm not trying to pretend that unhoused
- 14:33people just don't pose a threat, because they certainly can, but not the
- 14:37way we pretend. And the out of sight, out of mind approach is
- 14:46like a slightly more sanitized version. Then we're just gonna burn it all down.
- 14:54But honestly, in some ways it amounts to the same thing. I
- 15:00know that may sound extreme, but I'm just saying it. I'm just going
- 15:01to say it. I just what this all comes down to for me,
- 15:07guys as usual. What makes me so angry is that it doesn't have to
- 15:09be this way. Like, we have options, we have resources, this
- 15:15doesn't have to be how it works, and we keep choosing the same system
- 15:22over and over again, year after year, and I don't understand us.
- 15:28I just don't. So let's back it up now. Let's talk about Lufy
- 15:35becoming an apprentice because we meet a new character and he is actually quite fun.
- 15:43So we start off with the boys. They're trying to hunt, and
- 15:52Loofy is like coming at this bear from above on a cliff top while Sabo
- 15:58and Ace are on the ground and it's winter, So this is something that
- 16:03kind of comes into play a little bit later, is the fact that it
- 16:07starts to get warm around and things begin to change. But Loufy is going
- 16:14for this bear and he actually manages to take it down with his final like
- 16:21hit. I've got to be honest, you guys, I had a hard
- 16:25time with how much of these episodes dealt with killing animals. And I know
- 16:30that this is like a actual like survival need, and I don't blame them
- 16:37that, and I appreciate in some ways that the animator is making them look
- 16:45a lot more like real wild animals that are dangerous and intimidating and not as
- 16:51much like cartoon animals that I don't want anybody to hurt. But it still
- 16:56was really hard to watch, like a bunch of boys trying to gang up
- 17:00a bear in the woods, like I was just sort of like the bear,
- 17:03and later on with the tiger as well, and they're making this plan
- 17:07of like whoever gets to kill the tiger, and I was just like tiger,
- 17:10but gave him alone. What's he done? He stole their dinner though,
- 17:14so I guess. But yeah, that's what happens is this tiger comes
- 17:18up and steals the bear from Loofy, who tries to fight back and is
- 17:23just so angry because it's his first kill. So he's taking it extremely personally
- 17:29that this tiger just strolls up and takes it. But that's like part of
- 17:33the deal, the law of the jungle, as they say, like somebody
- 17:37can come and just take your shit, and that's how that works. So
- 17:44they have to, like Sabo and Ace have to gather Loofy up and carry
- 17:48him away because he is just prepared to keep fighting. And I just couldn't
- 17:52help but laugh at the fact that Ace is yelling at Lufy when he does
- 17:53this exact same thing, like I just don't I understand Lufy isn't at the
- 18:00level that Aces in terms of fighting, but it is really funny to see
- 18:04how indignant Ace is about this and then think back to the way he has
- 18:08reacted every time he has ever been challenged, and that he just would never
- 18:12back down. He doesn't do that, and we have this like incident on
- 18:18the bridge. This was so weird, and I feel like this has to
- 18:23come up later because the way this shook out felt strange. But they're crossing
- 18:30this rope bridge over a river and Lufy is just still hung up on the
- 18:37tiger taking his catch, and he says he can't steal from me. I'm
- 18:41gonna teach him a lesson, and he jumps up and down on the bridge,
- 18:45which causes it to sway really bad. And as it sways, he
- 18:49gets this look on his face and he's just like, oh, I'm gonna
- 18:55do it again, which was very correct in terms of what little children are
- 18:59like. They just they see something happen and like the fact that it's not
- 19:03likely to continue that way forever, that it's probably eventually going to end in
- 19:07one of us plummeting to our death. That part doesn't occur to them.
- 19:11All they notice is that the bridge swung, and I got a reaction out
- 19:17of the people that I'm with and those are the things I want most in
- 19:18life. And Loofy plunges through the wood of this bridge. They lose the
- 19:27pack that had their meat in it, and they just managed to catch him
- 19:32before he falls, and I was like, what is what's going on here?
- 19:37And later on I find I like the way that it felt to me
- 19:41was we're having a moment where they care so much about Loofy that they're risking
- 19:48themselves. And he can think back on it as a sort of warm and
- 19:52fuzzy moment when his brothers protected him and how they were all a team.
- 19:56But I have to admit they really let go very easily. The fact that
- 20:04Lufy decided to just jump up and down on the bridge in a way that
- 20:08I don't know I could have done. I think I would have held a
- 20:11lot more of a grudge about that. I'm not proud of that. I'm
- 20:15not saying that's the right way to handle things. In fact, I think
- 20:18it's the exact wrong way to handle things. And I think I need to
- 20:19like just let it go a lot more quickly whenever somebody just fucks up.
- 20:26But I have such a hard time with calling this a fuck up when it
- 20:32was so purposeful, you know, like they're warning him how dangerous it is
- 20:36and he is literally laughing and ignoring them. And I rarely see Loofy like
- 20:42this. I see Loofy be thoughtless, but Loofy actively doing something because somebody
- 20:52finds it kind of upsetting is really really rare. And as much as it
- 20:56felt correct to like a child, I can overlook him being a total more
- 21:03on most of the time because I understand that he didn't give something much thought
- 21:07or didn't consider connecting these two dots. And here I was just like,
- 21:14I can't make excuses for you. You know exactly what you're doing, and
- 21:15maybe you just deserve to fall to your deaths or I don't know. So
- 21:21yeah. Eventually there's a moment where they're all laying together and Lufy is like
- 21:26really thinking back on how cool it is to have brothers and that maybe they'll
- 21:32join his pirate crew someday. And he's sitting there like kind of giggling to
- 21:36himself and they are like what is going on? And he says, I'm
- 21:41just happy, that's all, And we've got to make a deal that you
- 21:47guys are joining my crew, do you promise? And both Sabo Andy so
- 21:52like the fuck we do? No, I didn't say you could be like.
- 21:56Sabo's response, which I thought was really interesting, was I'm not going
- 22:04to be somebody's lackey. He doesn't like the idea after having been sort of
- 22:11like forced into a role by his parents, of having to do that again
- 22:15for somebody else, which makes a lot of sense. But Ace's response is
- 22:25it's sort of interesting, like I don't feel like he just thinks that he's
- 22:33the best, although that's in there, don't get me wrong, but I
- 22:38don't think that's the only motivating factor. I think that Ace sees himself as
- 22:45the most focused, which definitely is Sabo is pretty focused, but there is
- 22:52a single minded goal to Ace that Sabo doesn't have the same drive for.
- 22:57Sabo wants freedom in general, but there's a lot of ways to live free.
- 23:03Ace wants to be the strongest, most badass fighter, which is very
- 23:08very specific, and so I can understand how he sort of sees that his
- 23:14own laser focuses is just better for a captain. I'm not sure that's even
- 23:21true, but I can understand how he thinks this way. And so what
- 23:26Lufy is saying is like, why don't we just work as a team to
- 23:30catch the tiger and whoever deals with the like final killing blow will be the
- 23:36one who gets to be captain. We'll just see who lands the final hit.
- 23:40And they agree to this. So they go out into the woods again
- 23:45and there's yet another bear, which they're like, okay, we'll use this
- 23:49bear as a warm up. But the bear is about to just like level
- 23:55the two of them or the three of them, I should say. He
- 23:57gets a big like bomb on his head and then begins chasing him, chasing
- 24:03them. I'm sorry, I keep misspeaking. Eventually, though, they're running
- 24:08into this clearing and they come across this old man and he gets between them
- 24:17and the bear. His name is Nagoti, and he all he has to
- 24:22do is hold up a hand and this bear stops dead, which is I'm
- 24:29assuming the use of hockey. It's uh, maybe not that simple because the
- 24:36way that he reacts when Lufy later says, how you just stop that bear,
- 24:42it does not feel like somebody who for whom Lufy got the right answer,
- 24:48and he's reacting to that. It sounds like somebody who's hearing Lufy's explanation
- 24:55and then is like, uh, yeah, that's it, you know,
- 25:00and it's just a real For me, it felt like that something else was
- 25:07going on. He doesn't have hockey but he's gonna let them think he does,
- 25:11which I don't have a problem with, like really, but I can't
- 25:18help but feel as if these kids help him build this ship and like worship
- 25:25him in a way that he definitely does not necessarily deserve. It works out
- 25:32in the end, I think, for everybody. But it is when I
- 25:37realize, like that sounds like he's just lying to Loofy and then Lufy wants
- 25:42to become his apprentice. All I could think was, just, like,
- 25:48you're really letting him like operate under some assumptions here that aren't I don't know
- 25:55if this is ethical, but what can you do? Because also I'm looking
- 26:00at this illustration here too, and just before the bear gets to him,
- 26:06he reaches into his robes, and so when he's holding his hand up,
- 26:14it's possible that he's holding something and showing it to the bear, and that
- 26:21is somehow has gotten him to stop. I don't know, though I can't
- 26:27tell. I can't tell. Anyway, we find out that he is somebody
- 26:37who works around Great Terminal collecting stuff all the time, and that he gets
- 26:42like picked on a lot because people like see him creating this weird stuff.
- 26:48And I loved Lufy's reaction because when I think Sabo's the one telling this part
- 26:56of the story, when Sabo describes how he'll get picked on and he'll just
- 27:00sit there and take it, Lufy's response, because of the way that he
- 27:04got taught by Shanks, is like, Oh, yeah, that's just how
- 27:08pirate captains are, which is so funny because like that's literally the exact opposite
- 27:15of how pirate captains are. But he it has only like one frame of
- 27:21reference, this guy that he really admires, and so he says it with
- 27:26total certainty, and understandably, Sabo was sort of sick of hearing about Shanks.
- 27:33I hadn't really thought of it until this scene, but if we were
- 27:36to extrapolate what their conversations tend to be, like, I would not be
- 27:40surprised if Lufy talks about Shanks like twenty times as often as he does on
- 27:47screen, you know, because all they talk about is wanting to be pirate
- 27:52captains, and he's one of the only ones any of them knows. So
- 27:57yeah, he would be our main reference point and I probably would get pretty
- 28:03sick of it as well. So we find out there's there's this whole thing
- 28:11where Ace wants to fight him Naguri, and the vibe with him is so
- 28:19aggressive, And that comes up a little bit later, but it's in response
- 28:25to the fact that Naguri says he himself and his crew went up against gold
- 28:34Roger and they lost. He's basically like, we got spanked and put in
- 28:38our place, but it sucked. And the suggestion is like, they basically
- 28:45leveled my crew, and now I'm here like a pauper, you know,
- 28:49sucks to suck. And the just the mention of gold Roger is enough to
- 28:59get Ace to get up and walk away, which I just have to,
- 29:03like, I have to give Ace a little bit of grace here and say
- 29:08he's a child, because if you don't want people knowing somebody is related to
- 29:12you, I really recommend simply not getting up and walking away in the middle
- 29:17of a conversation with no explanation, because I feel like that reaction is a
- 29:22real dead giveaway my guy, that something is up, like it just draws
- 29:29attention to the whole thing, and allegedly that's exactly what you want to avoid.
- 29:33And I'm not sure whether I should believe that, but what happens and
- 29:38I thought this was hilarious, not really like, but he walks away and
- 29:48I think it's not go to ustake. Did he just leave? And Sabo
- 29:53just says, oh, yeah, well his dad's called de roj so but
- 30:00don't tell him though. You can't tell him that I told you, Sabo.
- 30:07I am going to need you to not blame Lufy later when he blurts
- 30:14out this whole secret, because the fact that you ever thought somebody who's personality
- 30:22I thought we had gotten to know pretty well by now. If you ever
- 30:26thought somebody like Loofy was going to be able to keep that secret, you
- 30:32are brain dead. And that's setting aside entirely the real issue, which is
- 30:38the fact that they don't know Nagodi at all, like they've seen him around.
- 30:44There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to think that this secret is safe with
- 30:48Nagurdy. None just because you like him, because you hung out today,
- 30:52like just because he gets picked on and so you think, oh, he's
- 30:56not friends with other pirates, like, no know, this person has information
- 31:02to trade for resources. Now that's a problem you put. You put him
- 31:06in this position, and it's just completely luck. Whether he decides he's going
- 31:12to cash in on that or not, and he doesn't. But it really
- 31:17was sort of like, to me, there were some moments where I was
- 31:22waiting for him to betray them. I thought that was where this like whole
- 31:26plot was going to turn was going to be no good going into town and
- 31:32letting everybody know, oh gold Roger's son is hiding in the woods and basically
- 31:37putting a target on Ace's back because I didn't know him very well. Florine
- 31:45is in the chat saying, I love in one piece people, just no
- 31:48big secrets and deliver them like, yeah, no big deal. Garp did
- 31:52it, and Lufy as well. Oh yeah, I guess Garp did too,
- 31:56huh. But yeah, this the like fact that Sabo told is very
- 32:06quickly revealed to Ace later because Lufy just like blurts it out, and Ace
- 32:13freaks and just beats the shit out of Loufy and Sabo. And it's sort
- 32:20of a weird thing because like they've been getting along really well and they all
- 32:27seemed to be like on the same page here and this guy shows up and
- 32:31I think Lufy just like barely mentions that he's like, can you teach me
- 32:37some stuff? But the title of this episode is loofy becoming an apprentice,
- 32:44and at no point does it feel like this dude is taking him under his
- 32:49wing. And I kept waiting for the moment where Lufy walks off with this
- 32:55old man into the sunset, and it doesn't happen. The next episode just
- 33:00begins with Loofy having left, and I was so confused, and I don't
- 33:06know if I miss something or if there is a scene that is cut in
- 33:07like the dub version. But I actually went back to the end of the
- 33:15previous episode and rewatched it because I was certain that I had like pressed next
- 33:21episode too soon. I always wait for when it says to be continued or
- 33:25whatever it is, and I thought like, oh my god, is there
- 33:31sort of post credits scene for lack of a better word, But no,
- 33:36not that I saw. So if I miss something like really obvious and direct,
- 33:40I'm sorry. But I was totally at sea. So they get they
- 33:47like get in this big fight and it ends with a saying like all of
- 33:51you guys are dead to me, and what like the appearance of this fight
- 33:58is sort of weird because it almost gave the suggestion that they had like torn
- 34:01down the whole tree house. There's all kinds of stuff all over them,
- 34:07and after they both respond to hit like you bastards are dead to me with
- 34:10took the words right out of my mouth, everything sort of shifts. And
- 34:15I thought it was all shifting because the place was like falling, and evidently
- 34:22not, so it was a weird beat, but I just wanted to mention
- 34:23that as well. And then right before we have our you know, the
- 34:30end of the episode, blue Jam is talking to his pirates and we find
- 34:36out that Sabo's father is coming to these pirates to find his son, and
- 34:43I'm just thinking, like, oh, okay, he's got he's had enough
- 34:47of his son being missing, didn't know for sure what had happened to him,
- 34:52and now he's like initiating getting him back. But Sabo is very much
- 34:57more like why does my dad want me to come back? All of it
- 35:00sudden later on, like he feels like this is weird when he didn't really
- 35:02put much effort in before. And then we find out about the fire that
- 35:07scheduled and that he clearly just wanted to get his son out of there before
- 35:10it went down, which makes sense, and Blue Jam is determined to like
- 35:16ring as much as he can out of Tsabo's father and is like, all
- 35:22right, well, we're going to have a bit of a difficult time locating
- 35:28his son so that we can make him feel really really grateful to us and
- 35:32perhaps get a favor out of him, which is a smart move. And
- 35:37then we have the one tiny little scene with the Dawn where she is reading
- 35:44the newspaper and finding out that the celestial dragons are like coming to their island,
- 35:50which she didn't even know the name of their island. And I found
- 35:52that really funny, but it just immediately ties right in with the Homeland and
- 36:00Joe Biden thing like that was just it was so one to one that comparison.
- 36:07So the next episode, all of them are continuing to try and go
- 36:15after this tiger because they are going by the rules of figuring out who is
- 36:21going to be the captain. And I can't help but wonder, like I
- 36:25have to think they probably would, But I wondered if they were to all
- 36:30like become pirates together, would they stick to this deal? And I feel
- 36:37like the deal is meant to be quite serious and for real in the moment
- 36:43while they're children, But I also can see how a promise made when you
- 36:51were children that's this like long standing would almost start to take on a sort
- 36:54of sacredness. And so even when you were older and it really didn't make
- 37:00sense to continue going with this plan, that you would still follow it anyway,
- 37:05because it's just become that meaningful that the actual letter of it isn't what
- 37:12you like think about anymore. And so I kind of was interested to see
- 37:17who was going to take the tiger down because I was like, I don't
- 37:21know, I could see that like being definitive actually, but yeah, so
- 37:27this this episode, it's just Ace and Sabo figuring this out, and Lufy
- 37:30isn't with them, and Saba's talking to Ace about how to catch this tiger
- 37:36and Ace is just being fucking surly. This is like the most unexpected thing
- 37:40for me about Ace as a kid is how bad tempered he was, because
- 37:46he's so likable. As a grown up, he has a temper for sure,
- 37:53but as a kid, he's sullen all the time time, and there
- 38:00is just this constant feeling of like this chip on his shoulder that he doesn't
- 38:05have once he's gotten older. And it makes sense, especially if he finds
- 38:09a crew that feels like family and he can sort of get over the baggage
- 38:13with his dad. But it just really has come as a surprise to me.
- 38:17I thought that, like the attitude that he has had about being too
- 38:22cool was only directed at Loufy from the beginning, just to establish an obstacle
- 38:30that Lufy has to overcome for them to be friends. And the longer that
- 38:35this whole arc has gone on and Ace has continued to have this shitty attitude,
- 38:39I've been surprised because I thought it was just a temporary thing and that
- 38:44it was like directed at Loofy and not his actual personality. But no,
- 38:50it turns out it's just his personality at this point, which is very irritating,
- 38:54and I appreciated Sabo just kind of biting his head off here and being
- 38:59like, don't you give a shit about Loofy? Like why are you trying
- 39:02to act like you don't care about this? And at one point he says,
- 39:09maybe we haven't heard from him because he's dead already, and Ace just
- 39:15turns around and is like, did you say something. Oh my god,
- 39:17he's so annoying. Uh he's finally well, you know, he's the one
- 39:23who left, so I don't really care what happens to him because he made
- 39:28that choice, and Sappho's response is listen, I don't know who you're trying
- 39:35to impress with this, which was such a good line. It really was.
- 39:42Sava's like, I know it's not me because I fucking know better,
- 39:45and you can't think that I believe this bullshit. And there's nobody else here,
- 39:51so what exactly is your fucking problem? And as they're discussing this,
- 39:55a tree falls and they just managed to get out of the way and there
- 40:00is Loofy and he's like, ay, sorry about that, and he winds
- 40:07up leading them back to the campsite with the old man at Great Terminal,
- 40:13who tells them basically, I haven't been training Loofy, because they're like,
- 40:16what have you been teaching him? And he's like, all he's been doing
- 40:22is just cutting firewood, and I mean it's probably made him, like physically
- 40:27stronger, but it hasn't been combat stuff or anything like that. And this
- 40:31just made me so mad again that he like let Lufy think he had a
- 40:37magical ability that he I am becoming more and more certain simply never had,
- 40:42because that feels like it's just taking advantage of a child for child labor and
- 40:49I was like, sir, I get that you're an old man, but
- 40:52like, at least be fucking for real with this kid. And then we
- 40:57finally get the thing where he an Ace face off and Ace is convinced that
- 41:05he's going to be able to take him down no problem. He really has
- 41:09a visualization in his head about how this is going to go, and this
- 41:19man is just it's kind of funny, all things considered, because we see
- 41:24Ace beating the shit out of adults a fair amount. So the fact that
- 41:30this man is able to hold his own against Ace shows that he is actually
- 41:35above average in terms of fighting, even amongst younger men, which is pretty
- 41:40impressive. But it's just really something to see Ace walk into that so sure,
- 41:46and even when he gets beaten, he's like, I'll beat you next
- 41:50time and is fully planning to come and rematch this guy again. And that's
- 41:57part of what separates people a Ace from people like me. You know that
- 42:01I'm thinking, well, you just got completely poned in front of everybody.
- 42:07Maybe just like take your l and go sit in the corner and lick your
- 42:12wounds and just try and get better and see this as a humbling moment.
- 42:16But Ace sees things in such a so much more a competitive you versus me
- 42:24kind of way than I do. You know, I would be viewing this
- 42:29as like an indictment of my overall progress. But what Ace is seeing is
- 42:32like that guy beat me and that's all he cares about, is not winning
- 42:38in a way that's like extremely immature. Also again with very laser focused and
- 42:47oddly effective. It seems like the fact that he is competitive and just determined
- 42:54to beat everybody around him no matter what, does seem to improve his skill
- 43:00overall, So I can't fault him for it. Actually, but yeah,
- 43:07the he finally like he hasn't said that he is gold Roger's son, And
- 43:13I don't remember if Sabo even confesses that he said it in front of Noagorty
- 43:16or if it's just Loofy that he's like taking responsibility for. But he is
- 43:22talking to this guy and it's a weird conversation, and I'm wondering if there's
- 43:27something about this that is sort of missing me as having to read the dubs,
- 43:34you know, but uh A's is saying because this guy is sort of
- 43:39talking up gold Roger, and as is saying, if he's so great,
- 43:44then why does everybody hate him? And it's just thinking back to the way
- 43:49that he was treated. Uh, But this dude makes a point of like,
- 43:54wait, did those people actually meet gold Roger? Like, do the
- 44:00people who hate him actually fight him and see him face to face? In
- 44:07the world of pirates, if you lose a fight, you lose your life.
- 44:12And yet Roger chose to spare mine. And if those pirates did face
- 44:20him, they should be grateful, complaining like that is a luxury one they
- 44:27only have because their lives were spared. And Ace doesn't really seem to know
- 44:31how to react to that. He replies with if he had a son,
- 44:36do you think he should be grateful too, which felt like a little bit
- 44:38of a non sequitur. I was like, that's not really relevant exactly to
- 44:45what's I mean, Like everybody would say everybody should be grateful, but this
- 44:51dude just responds, knowing full well who he is. I'd feel sorry for
- 44:54him because I know that his father's name would just haunt him wherever he went
- 44:58with a legacy like that, wouldn't blame him for resenting the man. And
- 45:01it's not like you could talk it out with him either at any rate.
- 45:06If I were his son, I wouldn't want to be a pirate. His
- 45:09name could scarcely do me any favors, and more likely than not, it
- 45:13would put a target on my back. And Ace gets really mad about that,
- 45:21which I thought was funny because I fully expected that he had thought about
- 45:25this already. It's it feels like he's reacting as if he's just been told,
- 45:35don't become a pirate, you idiot because of this, And I'm just
- 45:38like, you had to know that it was going to put a target on
- 45:43your back, that if you became a pirate as his son, you'd be
- 45:45compared to him even more, Like it's weird that he's somebody that you hate
- 45:51so much, but you're actually following in his footsteps. It's never occurred to
- 45:55you before. I was just really surprised at his reaction. Could I thought
- 46:00it was going to be like lead up to an explanation of why he's making
- 46:07this choice, and instead it just seems like this caught him totally off guard.
- 46:14So anyway, this is the point where the uh, you know,
- 46:19he gets got within the fight, and then they find out about the huge
- 46:23ship that this guy has been building with all of the stuff that they've been
- 46:28collecting, or that he's been collecting, but he wants their help. And
- 46:34I was cracking up so much because Ace says something about like why should we
- 46:37help you? And he says, because I spared your life you in grateful
- 46:42little snot, which is then followed up with Sabo saying that's fine for Ace,
- 46:50But how did I get looped into this mess? What is this a
- 46:53child labor scheme? Which, considering the fact that he's just you sing loufy
- 47:00to like cut firewood and isn't actually teaching him anything, isn't an unjust accusation.
- 47:06In my opinion, I feel like this has some basis. I feel
- 47:08like if you were going to make a case, you could probably do it
- 47:13in a court of law and it would be compelling. But he tells them
- 47:20all, I can give you some tiger fighting tips if you stick around too.
- 47:27But A says I got one question, what are you going to do
- 47:30when the ship is done? And he says, I'm taking it on the
- 47:32sea of course, like I'm going to find my crewmates after we got spanked
- 47:38and split up. And their response is basically, do you know that you
- 47:45are old? Are you aware that you have very little time left to live,
- 47:55because it really feels like it's just ambitious, it's optimistic. I feel
- 48:04like you probably should give up on that, and he just basically says,
- 48:09what's a pirate, always a pirate, and you're never too old to give
- 48:13up on your dreams. You kids have a problem with that, and Loufy
- 48:17is delighted. Sabo just says, well, I'm not gonna stop you.
- 48:22But Ace walks away and eventually again, I guess I'll help you for now
- 48:30since you spared my life, but I'm beating you tomorrow. And I was
- 48:35just like, oh my god, Ace, I never thought you could be
- 48:37this boring, but you really are. I'm tired of you. So I
- 48:42just I really really liked this because, like, especially as somebody who's entering
- 48:46what's probably going to be like the second half of my life, or at
- 48:51least the dead center of it, I feel sometimes like it is too late
- 48:57to pursue certain things, and it's always inspiring to see somebody who's older just
- 49:01being like, yeah, I'm gonna fucking do it, because sometimes it's not
- 49:05just as simple as like, well, I know for sure I can't,
- 49:07but it's more of a sense of like, well, I can't I have
- 49:13passed the point that people who I see as being successful achieve that, Like
- 49:21there's no models out there for me to look at, and it can get
- 49:25very discouraging, feeling like you had to start your way towards success from when
- 49:29you were a teen or else you're just never gonna reach it. So yeah,
- 49:34I just like this little moment here, and when a says I'm going
- 49:39to beat you tomorrow, the old man just seems like pleased by that.
- 49:44He doesn't he doesn't react badly. So then we have the training and the
- 49:51building of his ship, which is, uh, that's really what the training
- 49:54is. It's it's sparring matches as well, but for the most part they're
- 50:00doing a lot of physical labor, and it's what turns out to be the
- 50:07like it's like weight training. We see them carrying huge bundles of logs and
- 50:14gears that are like the size of them, things like that. But eventually
- 50:20we have springtime coming up and the time where we have to say goodbye to
- 50:29Naguri. It's really like I just really liked the fact that I cared that
- 50:36he was leaving, you know, like he isn't actually taking off on this
- 50:42day, but the ship is ready and he is going to go fairly soon.
- 50:46So all I could think by the end of this trio of episodes is
- 50:52that the people of this area great Terminal may be able to like evacuate on
- 50:59him his ship. But I don't know. I don't know. You know.
- 51:06Eventually, when he's working on the ship in the middle of the night,
- 51:08like everybody's asleep, and Ace comes up to him and says, what
- 51:12does it mean to be a captain? Because he mentions like a strength beyond
- 51:17the physical, And when Lufi says, well, what is it? He
- 51:21then laughs and just says, well, I've forgotten. And when Ace asks
- 51:28him, he says, I'll be honest, Even after all these years,
- 51:30I'm not sure. Frankly, I don't think I was a very good captain.
- 51:36But my crew they still followed me right to the end. They called
- 51:39me captain without any doubt. And so in a way, I'm still captain
- 51:45of the Neguri pirates, not because of my strength, but because of the
- 51:49approval of my crew. That's the true test of a captain, or so
- 51:53I always say. So essentially, what it what it's coming down to is
- 52:00like, did you earn your men's respect? Do they trust you? If
- 52:06they do, you're you've proven yourself to them. You know. Ace does
- 52:13not take this well though, and I can understand that because I remember as
- 52:15a child being given like advice that felt as nebulous as this, when I
- 52:22just wanted to be given like a math problem to solve, to tell me
- 52:27the answer, and you just want something a lot more concrete than this.
- 52:30So he's giving Ace a real genuine answer that I think is more useful than
- 52:37Ace realizes at the time. But for the moment, Ace is dismissing it
- 52:42utterly, and it is kind of funny to see how like he just has
- 52:45a bunch of crap as he's walking away, but eventually he begins to understand
- 52:52the reality of it, and it's part of what plays into all of them
- 52:59working together to catch this tiger. Which it's really cute the way that they
- 53:07the trust that is so implicit and how quickly they fall into line when Ace
- 53:15has a plan that is sort of what defines a leader, Like if you
- 53:22put forth an idea and people are sort of like, I don't know,
- 53:28man, because they've seen you do some dumb shit in the past because you
- 53:32have a tendency towards a certain type of behavior and this is just like more
- 53:37of the same. But if you say something and people actually listen because they
- 53:43have grown to see that you have good judgment, that's leadership, you know.
- 53:50And I really like how it's not obvious in the moment to me that
- 53:55that's the the sort of city that he has set up with this fight with
- 54:01the tiger, but it works out that way, and even when he wins
- 54:07and they're all just like, God, damn it, I can't believe he
- 54:09won. They can't be that mad about it because he earned it. What
- 54:15surprised me is that Ace turns it down and it's just like, I'm not
- 54:22gonna be captain. It just doesn't feel right, really really compelling. I
- 54:29have so much like I have so much curiosity about what he means by that,
- 54:36and I don't know if it's tied into having daddy issues or exactly what
- 54:42the deal is there, but it was really surprising that he made this point
- 54:46the way that he did and then declined to be in charge, And yeah,
- 54:53I just kind of liked it. It was really surprising. So Okay,
- 55:01at the end of the episode is, uh, I'm trying to see
- 55:07to make sure that I haven't skipped over anything here, but we have the
- 55:13reveal of the sigil. It's the Jolly Roger and Noguri. Finally he takes
- 55:22off all by himself, and oh guys, I forgot that he actually does
- 55:25leave, because I was thinking that he might be an option. But I
- 55:29guess he's gone. He could come back. I don't see it, though.
- 55:34So the third episode, which I've mostly talked about already, is the
- 55:39one where Sabo gets brought back to live at home, and he's basically brought
- 55:46under duress because he's told that his father is gonna hurt his friends if he
- 55:52doesn't come along quietly. So he agrees to come along quietly, but it's
- 55:58not too long before he realizes that he's been had. I fully expected for
- 56:04his father to like fuck up his friends anyway, so when it turned out
- 56:09that there was this whole fire thing, it made more sense to me because
- 56:13it looked almost at first like his father was going to keep his word and
- 56:16be like, all right, well, since you came, I won't hurt
- 56:19your friends. But I was sort of like, that doesn't feel like a
- 56:22one piece villain type. The whole thing with them is that they don't keep
- 56:27promises right. They'll say one thing and then just do whatever, and finding
- 56:31out that it's just like a bigger picture. Breaking of the promise made a
- 56:36lot of sense. But Sabo is just so devastated to walk away from this,
- 56:42and Ace is like piling it on in a way that I was like,
- 56:45dude, can you have a little tact here? Because he keeps being
- 56:46like, are you just gonna give up on your dreams like this? And
- 56:50I'm like, Ace, Brauh, that's not like, that's not fair because
- 56:54he's saving you guys. You're surrounded. You guys could just be skeword right
- 57:00now, give him a break. But eventually, uh, he comes home
- 57:07and it's so weird, you guys, because it turns out that they have
- 57:13like adopted this other kid while he was gone. And the way this kid
- 57:17is animated is weird. He looks like he is from a different cartoon,
- 57:28if that makes sense. The style his name is Stelly, and the way
- 57:32his nose is drawn is that it like comes down all the way from his
- 57:37brow, like straight down. It's just a style of drawing that looks totally
- 57:44out of place, and even like the look of his eyes is weird.
- 57:49It's like kind of reminding me there were there are different eye styles that I
- 57:53remember specifically seeing on uh Killer Bark, but his eyes look much more dull
- 58:02like and they are extremely creepy. And the whole point with this kid is
- 58:10that he's gonna poke in prod and be a real like Helmepo type spoiled and
- 58:20in like insidious and really not insidious insinuating, that's the word I want,
- 58:25and trying to get under Sabo's skin right away, because it clearly matters to
- 58:31him that he be the favored child, and he doesn't seem to understand how
- 58:36little Sabo cares about that, because as much as it's annoying to him,
- 58:40like here, it would be better for me if you had never come back,
- 58:44and your parents like me better than you, all that's doing is making
- 58:50Sabo realize why he didn't come home again. And I feel like what this
- 58:57kid had intended was to establish dominance and beat Sabo down and kind of bully
- 59:04him so he doesn't get what he's after here. And yeah, this is
- 59:09when he says, to think, if you had stayed in Great Terminal,
- 59:14just one day longer, you'd be dead like the rest of them. And
- 59:17Sabo is like, wait, what are you talking about, And he explains
- 59:22the whole thing with the fires, and Sabo is like, they're going to
- 59:25just kill all the people, And he gets dressed and jumps right out the
- 59:31window, and we find out even though he watches some folks and thinks,
- 59:37oh, they're too happy, they couldn't possibly know what's going on. When
- 59:43he walks away, we hear them say, oh yeah, and tonight tomorrow
- 59:46is going to be even better because then we won't have that trash living so
- 59:51close by. So he is like certain, Oh, they couldn't be acting
- 59:55this way if they knew about it. But then he overhears some soul just
- 1:00:00talking about it, and it turns out that Blue Jam is in on this
- 1:00:06somehow. He asks himself, what could Blue Jam be getting out of it?
- 1:00:09Like, what's in it for him? I kind of wonder if he
- 1:00:12even knows what's going to happen, because I think he's being played and set
- 1:00:17up for his own destruction and doesn't know it. But that is the job
- 1:00:21that Blue Jim has paid lufian Ace to take on. He wants them to
- 1:00:25bring these boxes all over and place them in certain places, and he'll pay
- 1:00:30them for it. And I don't know if he's just giving them the same
- 1:00:36like message that he was given and hasn't checked the boxes, or if he
- 1:00:42knows what the plan is and he's just planning to save only himself and his
- 1:00:46crew, maybe not even his crew. But I was just sort of operating
- 1:00:52under the assumption that Blue Jam doesn't actually know what's happening here, and knowing
- 1:00:59that like lufian A, had become unwilling participants in creating this. It's just
- 1:01:04so shitty, like it reminds me of There was a point when I worked
- 1:01:08at Whole Foods. I left and I was like still very close with a
- 1:01:15lot of my friends who worked there, and so I heard the stories after
- 1:01:17I left. But there was a series of firings, and looking back now,
- 1:01:24I'm beginning to understand that it was right around the time that Whole Foods
- 1:01:29was transitioning from being like more of a cooperative company to much more capitalist and
- 1:01:36there were clearly made up reasons for firing folks because they were just trying to
- 1:01:40lower the labor budget by hiring new people at lower wages. Because Whole Foods
- 1:01:45had been pretty great about steadily giving raises, and if you do that and
- 1:01:50people stay for a long time, your labor budget becomes pretty huge. So
- 1:01:55one of my friends had been told not that folks were getting fired, he
- 1:02:01was just asked to help them in the break room, or not a break
- 1:02:06it was like a conference room. Will you go get so and so from
- 1:02:08the front and bring them here and just wait outside for a little bit,
- 1:02:12and we'll give you the next name of somebody to bring in. And after
- 1:02:16the first one and they come out crying. He realized they're sending me to
- 1:02:20bring people to get fired, and he felt awful, but like he had
- 1:02:23to do what he was told, so he kept doing that, bringing people
- 1:02:29back, and then at the end of the day they brought him in and
- 1:02:34they fired him too. And I still think about that all the time,
- 1:02:38somebody who's like doing what he thinks he has to to save himself, not
- 1:02:44realizing that he is just as disposable as everybody else, counting himself lucky that
- 1:02:50he still has a job, and all day watching other people be tormented,
- 1:02:54and being just as much of a victim at the end of that day as
- 1:02:57the rest of them and not seeing it coming at all, And that is
- 1:03:00kind of what I feel like, this is comparable to with them setting all
- 1:03:05of this up and having no idea what they're like really participating in. So
- 1:03:13when t Sabo like runs into some people on the street and ask them if
- 1:03:17they know about it, and they blurt out like of course they of course
- 1:03:21we know, he is horrified. And as he's like running away, he's
- 1:03:25looking around the neighborhood at all of these people who are just smiling and having
- 1:03:30like a perfectly normal, lovely day, and it's just like, what the
- 1:03:34fuck is wrong with everybody? Which is a good question, What is wrong
- 1:03:38with us? What is wrong with us? You know? Like I just
- 1:03:44really felt this. It just brought up a lot of emotions for me,
- 1:03:49because this is essentially how it works. It's an extreme like it's an extreme
- 1:03:57example nowadays, but very recently it wasn't that extreme, and it's only a
- 1:04:08little a little bit more sterilized now, so it's pretty upsetting. Like when
- 1:04:15he runs into this guy on the street and after the people that he like
- 1:04:23goes and talks to at the cafe, there's a kindly old man that he
- 1:04:28runs into and he asks as well, like have you heard about the fire
- 1:04:30are and you're not worried at all. Nobody in this town cares what happens.
- 1:04:35Nobody in the town thinks to stop this thing. The old man says,
- 1:04:40that's admirable of you. You must have a very kind heart. But
- 1:04:45don't say a word. It's important we keep our mouth shut. Think what
- 1:04:50would happen if someone outside of high Town found out about the plan. You
- 1:04:57and I are special. We come from great, noble families. And it's
- 1:05:02just so funny because of the way he starts it off. Oh that's really
- 1:05:05kind of you. You really think that, like he's going to be one
- 1:05:11of the different ones, and instead it's just like, oh, that's so
- 1:05:15sweet of you. But don't be too sweet, Like don't don't really care,
- 1:05:20Like you could say something that's placating, but like, don't get invested
- 1:05:26in that and actually give a shit about other people. That's a real slippery
- 1:05:29slope, which isn't too far off from the way a lot of white liberals
- 1:05:35operate. Actually, So yeah, the episode just ends with him like saying
- 1:05:42to himself, there's something wrong with these people. They're going to die and
- 1:05:45they're happy that they're all going to die. This place is sick. I
- 1:05:48have to get out of here. I have to tell them right now.
- 1:05:54And as he's running out and the like, there's the wind is picking up,
- 1:06:00which is not good for just causing a fire to get even worse.
- 1:06:05He gets spotted by some people and they begin to chase him down because he's
- 1:06:11the runaway boy and his father noticed a lot more quickly than he was hoping.
- 1:06:15I think that he had gone missing. And that is the end of
- 1:06:18the episode. So yeah, I really really like this arc. I'm fascinated
- 1:06:24by it and I'm really interested to see where it goes. All right,
- 1:06:28I'm gonna wrap up, but thank you guys again so much for hanging out
- 1:06:30with me. Thank you Florian for commissioning this one. And until next time
- 1:06:34to Ulu. Motherfuckers. That was an Unspoiled Network podcast.
