- 0:12Hello friends. Happy Monday to you.
- 0:15I am Sean. It is the 2nd of October.
- 0:18Happy new month to you. I hope you're going well and at
- 0:22this early point in the week as you're looking ahead, things are
- 0:25looking just dandy as they are for me because well.
- 0:29Next week I get holidays. So you know, the week before
- 0:32holidays you kind of have 1000 things that you're trying to get
- 0:35done before. You're not at work for a week.
- 0:37Well. That's me this week.
- 0:39Running around, chasing my tail, getting things done so I can
- 0:42have some time off. But I'm not there yet, so I
- 0:45better stop talking this way. Otherwise I'll get nothing done
- 0:48this week. I'll just want to relax.
- 0:50But before we relax, let you and me go back to those busy
- 0:55disciples, those busy apostles at the beginning of this church.
- 0:59We're going to hear this week about Peter and about Paul.
- 1:03As they are preaching and healing and growing God's church
- 1:07and trying to work out what does it mean when all these Gentiles
- 1:11become Christians, How does that actually work in the new church,
- 1:16which has been very, very Jewish up until this point.
- 1:20So join me friends, as we go back and read together.
- 1:24Acts, Chapter 10. In say, Saria there lived a
- 1:38Roman army officer named Cornelius, who is a captain of
- 1:42the Italian regiment. He was a devout, Godfearing man,
- 1:46as was everyone in his household.
- 1:49He gave generously to the poor and prayed regularly to God.
- 1:53One afternoon about 3:00, he had a vision in which he saw an
- 1:57Angel of God coming toward him. Cornelius the Angel said.
- 2:02Cornelius stared at him in terror.
- 2:05What is it, Sir? He asked the Angel, and the
- 2:08Angel replied. Your prayers and gifts to the
- 2:11poor have been received by God as an offering.
- 2:15Now send some men to Jopper and summon a man named Simon Peter.
- 2:21He is staying with Simon, a Tanner who lives near the
- 2:24seashore. As soon as the Angel was gone,
- 2:27Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout
- 2:30soldier. One of his personal attendants.
- 2:33He told them what had happened and sent them off to Joppa.
- 2:37The next day, as Cornelius's message was nearing the town,
- 2:41Peter went up on the flat roof to pray.
- 2:44It was about noon and he was hungry, but while a meal was
- 2:48being prepared, he fell into a trance.
- 2:51He saw the sky open and something like a large sheet was
- 2:56let down by its four corners. In the sheet were all sorts of
- 3:00animals, reptiles, and birds. Then a voice said to him, Get
- 3:05up, Peter. Kill and eat them.
- 3:08No, Lord, Peter declared. I've never eaten anything that
- 3:11our Jewish laws have declared impure and unclean.
- 3:15But the voice spoke again. Do not call something unclean if
- 3:19God has made it clean. The same vision was repeated
- 3:23three times. Then the sheet was suddenly
- 3:26pulled up to heaven. Peter was very perplexed.
- 3:30What could the vision mean? Just then, the men sent by
- 3:34Cornelius found Simon's house standing outside the gate.
- 3:38They asked if a man named Simon Peter was staying there.
- 3:41Meanwhile, as Peter was puzzling over the vision, the Holy Spirit
- 3:45said to him, three men have come looking for you.
- 3:49Get up, go downstairs and go with them without hesitation.
- 3:53Don't worry, for I have sent them.
- 3:57Sir Peter went down and said, I'm the man you were looking
- 4:00for. Why have you come?
- 4:02They said we were sent by Cornelius, a Roman officer.
- 4:06He is a devout and godfearing man, well respected by all the
- 4:10Jews. A holy Angel instructed him to
- 4:13summon you to his house so he can hear your message.
- 4:18So Peter invited the men to stay for the night.
- 4:21The next day he went with them, accompanied by some of the
- 4:25brothers from Joppa. They arrived in Cesaria the
- 4:28following day. Cornelius was waiting for them
- 4:31and had called together his relatives and close friends.
- 4:35As Peter entered his home, Cornelius fell at his feet and
- 4:38worshipped him. But Peter pulled him up and said
- 4:41stand up, I'm a human being just like you.
- 4:45So they talked together and went inside, where many others were
- 4:49assembled, Peter told them. You know it is against our laws
- 4:53for a Jewish man to enter a gentile home like this or to
- 4:56associate with you. But God has shown me that I
- 5:00should no longer think of anyone as impure or unclean.
- 5:05So I came without objection as soon as I was sent for.
- 5:08Now tell me why you sent for me, Cornelius replied.
- 5:12Four days ago I was praying in my house about this same time,
- 5:173:00 in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in dazzling
- 5:20clothes was standing in front of me.
- 5:22He told me, Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your
- 5:27gifts to the poor have been noticed by God.
- 5:30Now send messages to Jopper and summon a man named Simon Peter.
- 5:35He is staying in the home of Simon a Tanner who lives near
- 5:38the seashore. So I sent for you at once, and
- 5:42it was good of you to come. Now we are all here, waiting
- 5:46before God. To hear the message the Lord has
- 5:48given you, then, Peter replied. I see very clearly that God
- 5:54shows no favoritism in every nation.
- 5:58He accepts those who fear him and do what is right.
- 6:01This is the message of good news for the people of Israel, that
- 6:05there is peace with God through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of
- 6:10all. You know what happened
- 6:13throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee, after John began
- 6:16preaching his message of baptism?
- 6:18And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy
- 6:22Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing
- 6:27good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God
- 6:31was with him, and we apostles or witnesses of all he did
- 6:35throughout Judea. And in Jerusalem they put him to
- 6:39death by hanging him on a tree. But God raised him to life on
- 6:44the third day. Then God allowed him to appear
- 6:47not to the general public, but to us, whom God had chosen in
- 6:51advance to be as witnesses. We were those who ate and drank
- 6:55with him after he rose from the dead.
- 6:58And he ordered us to preach everywhere, and to testify that
- 7:01Jesus is the one appointed by God to be judged over all the
- 7:06living and the dead. He is the one all the prophets
- 7:10testified about. Saying that everyone who
- 7:12believes in him will have their sins forgiven through his name.
- 7:17Even as Peter was saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell
- 7:21upon all who were listening to the message.
- 7:24The Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed that the
- 7:28gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out onto Gentiles too,
- 7:32for they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.
- 7:36Then, Peter asked, can anyone object to their being baptized?
- 7:40Now that they've received the Holy Spirit, just as we did so
- 7:44we gave orders for them to be baptized in the name of Jesus
- 7:47Christ. Afterward, Cornelius asked him
- 7:50to stay with them for several days.
- 8:03Jesus, your Kingdom is for everyone you throw open.
- 8:08You throw wide the gates and say, come, all are welcome.
- 8:13Just love me. Just receive my gift of love.
- 8:18Oh, thank you, our Father, that you don't play games.
- 8:22You just have a big father's heart for all people, and you
- 8:28want to draw us in under your wing to love us and protect us
- 8:35and save us through Jesus and give us your spirit, just like
- 8:39those Gentiles in Cornelius's house.
- 8:44Thank you for the love that you give us, for the welcome that
- 8:47you extend us. And the grace that you pour over
- 8:50us, we are so grateful and it's in your saving name that we pray
- 8:55Jesus. Amen.
