Latest / Normally / Normally Podcast: Is Cancel Culture Coming to an End?
Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Hey, guys, Prince, normalous countryman. We are back on normally.
- 0:09Speaker 1: I am Mary Catherine hand.
- 0:10Speaker 2: This is where we have normalist takes for when the
- 0:12Speaker 2: news gets weird and I'm here with Carl Marco.
- 0:15Speaker 3: It's I'm Mary Catherine. How's it going.
- 0:17Speaker 1: It's good. I hope you're doing. Okay.
- 0:20Speaker 2: I know that if Florida drops below seventy three, it's
- 0:24Speaker 2: key six.
- 0:25Speaker 4: Okay, let's not laugh. It's freezing outside. I'm going to
- 0:29Speaker 4: sweater inside.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Which okay, I.
- 0:31Speaker 4: Am going to sweater inside even in seventy degrees, but
- 0:34Speaker 4: it is legitimately chilly outside.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Of course, the north part of Florida has it worse.
- 0:39Speaker 3: They got snow, they got snow.
- 0:42Speaker 2: I do have to say, although I want everybody to
- 0:44Speaker 2: stay safe, that Southerners acting an absolute fool in the
- 0:48Speaker 2: snow always makes for great TV footage. But it's not
- 0:54Speaker 2: so unsafe in the Panhandle of Florida, because, notably, even
- 0:58Speaker 2: in the Panhandle of Florida, where snow almost never shows up,
- 1:02Speaker 2: one Governor Ron de Santas had snowplows ready to go.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Where do he get them? Where does he snow? Where
- 1:10Speaker 3: does he store these snowplows? Everyone's like we have these, like,
- 1:14Speaker 3: that's amazing.
- 1:15Speaker 2: I mean, you know, even if he didn't have them, Yeah,
- 1:19Speaker 2: the great thing about him is that he'd be like
- 1:21Speaker 2: where could we get them and borrow them to use? Right,
- 1:28Speaker 2: And it yet again displays just the correct posture of
- 1:34Speaker 2: a state government should be to stage and manage resources
- 1:37Speaker 2: so that you can have as smooth a process through
- 1:41Speaker 2: a weird event as possible.
- 1:42Speaker 3: It's amazing.
- 1:43Speaker 4: You know, a friend of ours, Jeremy Senderowitz, he tweeted
- 1:47Speaker 4: about you and said, as MK Hammer said, competence is
- 1:51Speaker 4: providing competence in providing basic services has become.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Write coded, which is just true.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:58Speaker 4: It's like it's become like if you have everything under control,
- 2:02Speaker 4: you're a crazy.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Right winger and how dare you?
- 2:05Speaker 2: And it's really a disservice to citizens who live under
- 2:07Speaker 2: other party governments. It really controlled governments. People make this
- 2:12Speaker 2: excuse in my comments all the time, like you can't
- 2:15Speaker 2: compare these fires to anything, and it's like, well, I
- 2:18Speaker 2: don't know. You probably could compare them to a once
- 2:20Speaker 2: every hundred year snowstorm in Florida. They know they get fires.
- 2:25Speaker 2: I would argue they were probably more warned about that
- 2:29Speaker 2: that's right.
- 2:29Speaker 4: I mean, so Jeremy was retweeting Polymath, another friend of ours.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Florida is more prepared.
- 2:35Speaker 4: For once in a lifetime snowstorm than California is for
- 2:38Speaker 4: yearly wildfires.
- 2:40Speaker 3: And that's, you know, the.
- 2:41Speaker 4: Fact of the matter here. Look, we are obviously praying
- 2:44Speaker 4: for California. We feel like such a tragedy and we
- 2:48Speaker 4: hope that they rebuild, and all of our thoughts are
- 2:51Speaker 4: with them. But this was a competency test and every
- 2:55Speaker 4: politician in California failed.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Yeah, and as I always a disaster is going to
- 3:00Speaker 2: be disastrous by definition that some of that will just happen,
- 3:05Speaker 2: but it is your responsibility to make it as least
- 3:10Speaker 2: bad as it can be with.
- 3:12Speaker 1: The resources you have.
- 3:14Speaker 2: And if you just just totally let go of that idea,
- 3:19Speaker 2: then you're not getting anything that you're paying for as
- 3:21Speaker 2: a citizen.
- 3:22Speaker 1: And they deserve what they pay.
- 3:23Speaker 3: For, right, That's what it's all about.
- 3:26Speaker 4: This leads us into our first topic, which is this
- 3:30Speaker 4: backlash against performers who performed at the Trump inauguration.
- 3:35Speaker 3: I want to tie it to the kind of cancel culture.
- 3:39Speaker 4: You can't vote Republican, you can't like Republicans, you can't
- 3:41Speaker 4: have anything to do with Republicans.
- 3:42Speaker 3: They're the worst, even when they're saving you.
- 3:47Speaker 4: And how just fake all of this is, and that
- 3:51Speaker 4: I hate all of it. Let's play the clip of
- 3:53Speaker 4: Charlemagne talking about how ridiculous it is that performers are
- 3:57Speaker 4: being targeted, but Obama gets to whole haul it up
- 4:00Speaker 4: with Donald Trump.
- 4:01Speaker 5: The hypocrisy that people display in regards to who they
- 4:05Speaker 5: like and don't like is mind blowing to me, Like,
- 4:08Speaker 5: there is no way you are more mad at rappers
- 4:11Speaker 5: for performing at these inauguration events than you are at
- 4:14Speaker 5: the elected officials who told us Trump was a fascist,
- 4:17Speaker 5: a threat to democracy, a danger to our country and
- 4:19Speaker 5: the constitution. They likened him to Hitler. But then folks
- 4:22Speaker 5: like Biden just welcomed them back in the White House.
- 4:24Speaker 5: Obama was sharing a good laugh with him at the
- 4:27Speaker 5: funeral of President Carter. We know why the rappers, you know,
- 4:31Speaker 5: did what they did. We know why they doing it.
- 4:33Speaker 5: They got paid. What's the politician's excuse for normalizing Trump?
- 4:36Speaker 1: Oh?
- 4:36Speaker 5: When I said that on Twitter over the weekend, I
- 4:38Speaker 5: got I'm still getting draged. They said, because Obama has
- 4:41Speaker 5: to do that as a politicy.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Trump didn't do.
- 4:43Speaker 5: It for you exactly if Trump said the Trump said
- 4:46Speaker 5: the election was stolen in twenty twenty, and then he
- 4:49Speaker 5: acted like it. He didn't do no peaceful transfer of power.
- 4:51Speaker 5: He didn't show up to the inauguration, because why would
- 4:53Speaker 5: you ever show up to an inauguration after you just
- 4:55Speaker 5: accused a bunch of people of stealing an election. Democrats
- 4:58Speaker 5: can learn a thing or two from that. And if
- 5:00Speaker 5: you ask me, all that smoke you have for the rappers,
- 5:02Speaker 5: you should have for Obama, you should have for Biden
- 5:05Speaker 5: and all the other elected officials who got us all
- 5:08Speaker 5: rolled up and scared only to turn around and have
- 5:11Speaker 5: tea with a man they likened to Hitler, like literally
- 5:15Speaker 5: just was having tea with him yesterday. I would respect
- 5:17Speaker 5: it more if folks was consistent and they gave Obama
- 5:20Speaker 5: and Biden smoke. But I didn't see none of that.
- 5:23Speaker 5: But y'all mad at Nelly and Snoop Nelli and Snoop
- 5:26Speaker 5: don't hold more wait thing Biden Obama like that's honestly,
- 5:29Speaker 5: those performances are inconsequential. But what are people going to
- 5:31Speaker 5: remember two years from now in mid terms or four
- 5:34Speaker 5: years from now when it's another presidential election. They're gonna
- 5:36Speaker 5: remember when, oh, you told us these were the you
- 5:39Speaker 5: liking this guy to Hitler and this guy was a
- 5:40Speaker 5: threat to democracy. But then we saw you showing all
- 5:43Speaker 5: your teeth with him at a funeral.
- 5:44Speaker 1: They never believed it. They never believed it.
- 5:47Speaker 2: They never believed it, and they made a bunch of
- 5:50Speaker 2: other people believe it.
- 5:51Speaker 4: Yeah, they divided us. They kept us at each other's throats.
- 5:55Speaker 4: They have families, you know, just going to war with
- 5:59Speaker 4: each other because Trump is Hitler and how could you
- 6:01Speaker 4: support Hitler? And if you support Hitler, then I can't
- 6:03Speaker 4: be family with you anymore, et cetera. But they really
- 6:05Speaker 4: never believed it themselves. And you know, his point about
- 6:08Speaker 4: Trump is a good one. So I did not think
- 6:11Speaker 4: that election twenty twenty was stolen, and I behaved like it.
- 6:15Speaker 4: I was like, we have a new president. I am
- 6:17Speaker 4: not happy about this, but this.
- 6:19Speaker 3: Is the reality.
- 6:20Speaker 4: And Donald Trump did think the election was stolen and
- 6:23Speaker 4: he did behave like it. Hey, listen, whatever else you
- 6:25Speaker 4: want to say about Donald Trump, he's real.
- 6:28Speaker 3: He that was what people are drawn to him for.
- 6:30Speaker 4: He's real, and in his being real, I have my
- 6:34Speaker 4: problems with him. I think he really likes to be liked.
- 6:37Speaker 4: That's why he sat with Obama, and that's why he
- 6:39Speaker 4: was completely fine with it.
- 6:40Speaker 3: He just he loves being loved.
- 6:42Speaker 4: I know people like him in real life, and I
- 6:45Speaker 4: see this in him. It's not a bad trait. It's
- 6:48Speaker 4: not one I have.
- 6:49Speaker 3: I don't need to be loved, but he does. And
- 6:53Speaker 3: all of that is very very real.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:55Speaker 2: I also like about this that the scolds are the
- 6:58Speaker 2: ones who are coming in for criticism. Now, it's not
- 7:02Speaker 2: it's not actually Nelly and and Snoop that are They're
- 7:07Speaker 2: getting some flag sure, but largely the backlash is against
- 7:12Speaker 2: those who are having a freak out because it's like
- 7:16Speaker 2: that kind of reaction, whether it's over Elon that we
- 7:19Speaker 2: talked about in the last episode, or this makes people
- 7:23Speaker 2: go I'm not pretending to be angry about this anymore.
- 7:27Speaker 1: I'm not pretending that.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Or that this is a big problem that these guys
- 7:32Speaker 2: are performing for money at a crypto ball like, it's
- 7:36Speaker 2: not a problem.
- 7:37Speaker 4: We have other problems, right, And the cancel culture thing,
- 7:42Speaker 4: I'm sure it's not going to go away completely, but
- 7:44Speaker 4: it absolutely is winding down. I think that people are
- 7:48Speaker 4: mocking the cancelors, even people on the left.
- 7:51Speaker 3: That is where we had to get to.
- 7:52Speaker 4: We had to get to people in their own political
- 7:55Speaker 4: universe saying, yeah, they're going to perform at the president inauguration,
- 8:00Speaker 4: get over it. And it's been such a long time
- 8:03Speaker 4: I think since we've had that. I was thinking back,
- 8:05Speaker 4: you know, even in the Bush years it was like, how.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Dare you talk to George W. Bush? And how dare
- 8:11Speaker 3: you go to his inauguration and that kind of thing.
- 8:14Speaker 3: It's different, it's changing. I love it.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I did too. One that's sort of cutting against
- 8:20Speaker 1: the grain.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Did you see the I'll mention briefly the Episcopalian bishop
- 8:25Speaker 2: who spoke at the interfaith service the National Cathedral and
- 8:29Speaker 2: of course had like tons of very explicit political messages,
- 8:34Speaker 2: as the Episcopalians often do. This is an interfaith service,
- 8:38Speaker 2: and one of them is leftism. That's the face that
- 8:41Speaker 2: we're honoring it. You know, she's getting a bunch of
- 8:45Speaker 2: TV time. And to your point about Trump needing to
- 8:48Speaker 2: be liked, I think jd Vance's approach to her, scolding
- 8:53Speaker 2: them from the pulpit is exactly correct.
- 8:56Speaker 1: He's got a skeptical face.
- 8:57Speaker 2: He turns to his wife like, are we really doing this, yeah,
- 9:00Speaker 2: and he turns back. Trump had a very stoic reaction
- 9:03Speaker 2: in the venue and then truthed about it very angrily.
- 9:07Speaker 2: And I would just say, don't give him that oxygen,
- 9:10Speaker 2: because he's going to go on CNN's going to go
- 9:13Speaker 2: on NBC and say, oh, he's after me now. And
- 9:16Speaker 2: it's like, yeah, it's not a big deal. It's not
- 9:18Speaker 2: a big deal.
- 9:19Speaker 1: People times.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Yeah, but that's him. If he's mad, you're going to
- 9:23Speaker 3: know it.
- 9:23Speaker 1: That's true.
- 9:24Speaker 4: Again, I would handle it totally differently. I would pretential
- 9:27Speaker 4: you didn't exist and move on with my life and
- 9:29Speaker 4: not you know, just block and move on is my
- 9:33Speaker 4: kind of philosophy on this kind of thing.
- 9:34Speaker 3: And somebody's mean to you or nasty or whatever. But
- 9:37Speaker 3: Trump isn't that guy. He just isn't.
- 9:40Speaker 4: And so of course he's going to make a big
- 9:42Speaker 4: deal about this. Jesse Kelly tweeted something like, whoever set
- 9:46Speaker 4: up that event should be fired, has to send a
- 9:48Speaker 4: message that you can't make mistakes like that.
- 9:51Speaker 3: I kind of am with that. I really do think
- 9:53Speaker 3: that you can't make mistakes like that. This term.
- 9:56Speaker 4: This is a different Trump presidency, you know, and all
- 10:00Speaker 4: the different ways that it's.
- 10:01Speaker 3: I think better. And one of the ways is, no,
- 10:05Speaker 3: he shouldn't have to sit through a.
- 10:06Speaker 4: Sermon where the religious leader is criticizing him to his face,
- 10:11Speaker 4: or you know, giving a political speech. And believe me,
- 10:14Speaker 4: as a secular Jew, I've seen the politicization of religion.
- 10:18Speaker 1: We've all been there right there.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Yeah, but you know, I'm very big on I would
- 10:23Speaker 4: walk out right now if I was in a Jewish
- 10:25Speaker 4: ceremony of any kind. Don't invite me to your bar mitzvahs.
- 10:28Speaker 4: By the way, if your rabbi is going to be
- 10:30Speaker 4: talking about anything political, I will walk right out and
- 10:33Speaker 4: it will be a.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Bit of a scene. And look, I think that that's
- 10:38Speaker 3: what he should have done.
- 10:38Speaker 4: I know that he didn't, and I do think that
- 10:41Speaker 4: whoever put this event together needs to be held somewhat accountable.
- 10:46Speaker 4: And I would just add as a personal note, this
- 10:49Speaker 4: isn't new for me. I stopped my own wedding when
- 10:52Speaker 4: the rabbi started talking about this feminist nonsense. I was like, no, no,
- 10:57Speaker 4: we're gonna we're gonna end, We're gonna stop right.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Here, We're not doing it. I do like that.
- 11:01Speaker 2: I will walk out of a church where it's just
- 11:04Speaker 2: like I understand politics. That's my job. You don't need
- 11:09Speaker 2: to tell me about that. We're here for something else.
- 11:12Speaker 2: And I think that the bishops or she did both
- 11:14Speaker 2: her faith well, both of her faith. Episcopalianism and leftism
- 11:20Speaker 2: no help in that display.
- 11:23Speaker 3: We're going to take a short break and come right
- 11:25Speaker 3: back with normally.
- 11:29Speaker 2: We have a second segment today about your favorite executive
- 11:33Speaker 2: action or sweeping order of any kind from the first
- 11:37Speaker 2: couple of days of the Trump administration. It's really like
- 11:41Speaker 2: going from Droopy the dog to Sonic the hedgehog. Like
- 11:44Speaker 2: we have not experienced this level of activity for a
- 11:50Speaker 2: long time, and I kind of forgot what it felt like.
- 11:53Speaker 1: It is. Wow, So what's your favorite, Carol.
- 11:56Speaker 4: So it's funny because I consider the border kind of
- 11:59Speaker 4: my main issue right now, and I just think I
- 12:02Speaker 4: just think of it as a civilizational fight.
- 12:04Speaker 3: So I thought that the.
- 12:06Speaker 4: Border ones would be my absolute favorite, declaring an emergency
- 12:09Speaker 4: at the border, just changing the whole process.
- 12:13Speaker 3: I'm enjoying that.
- 12:13Speaker 4: But I have to tell you that the one that
- 12:16Speaker 4: I did not expect to kind of feel something about
- 12:20Speaker 4: is the there are only two genders. I was like,
- 12:23Speaker 4: I because it was a bringing us back to reality moment.
- 12:28Speaker 3: I've talked about this before. You know, I grew up
- 12:30Speaker 3: in New York City.
- 12:31Speaker 4: I had drag queen friends, I had trans friends, I
- 12:34Speaker 4: had all of that, and I was very what you
- 12:37Speaker 4: would call pro all of that. And then I saw
- 12:40Speaker 4: in the last you know, ten years, where things have
- 12:42Speaker 4: gone off a cliff, where we're birthing people, where we're
- 12:46Speaker 4: not called women anymore, where men are in all the
- 12:49Speaker 4: women's spaces. It only went in one direction, men are
- 12:52Speaker 4: playing in girls' sports, et cetera. This was a sane moment,
- 12:57Speaker 4: and I think that's the one for me.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I appreciate it very much that.
- 13:03Speaker 2: It just sort of it it formalizes what everyone feels,
- 13:08Speaker 2: which is and I said this the other day, like
- 13:11Speaker 2: a lot of people give the American people flack from
- 13:14Speaker 2: the left people do about them not being tolerant enough,
- 13:17Speaker 2: and in fact, Americans are quite tolerant and have been
- 13:21Speaker 2: very tolerant of this particular movement on gender ideology for
- 13:25Speaker 2: ten years. But under the guise of saying everyone is
- 13:28Speaker 2: bullying them, they actually bullied a lot of people. And
- 13:32Speaker 2: those people are now saying, yes, let's have this coded
- 13:36Speaker 2: encoded in the way we treat the law in this
- 13:39Speaker 2: country that we're not doing this anymore. We're not getting
- 13:42Speaker 2: bullied on this anymore. So I liked that one too.
- 13:45Speaker 2: I'm going to go a little smaller. It might surprise you,
- 13:48Speaker 2: but for this reason, it had the same return to
- 13:50Speaker 2: normalcy feeling.
- 13:52Speaker 1: The order that the.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Unanimously confirmed Secretary of State Marco Rubio made that the
- 13:59Speaker 2: United State's flag will be the one flying over all
- 14:05Speaker 2: the places that we fly the flag, and they had
- 14:08Speaker 2: added the lgbt Q flags, they had added BLM flags,
- 14:14Speaker 2: and they're flying in the most ridiculous places, in outposts
- 14:18Speaker 2: all around the world, and it is unifying to not
- 14:22Speaker 2: do that.
- 14:23Speaker 3: I love it.
- 14:23Speaker 2: If diversity is our strength, then we can all stand
- 14:26Speaker 2: under one flag. I like that he does this with
- 14:29Speaker 2: bipartisan support because he was unanimously confirmed. I like that
- 14:33Speaker 2: he's already showing that he has a propensity to manage
- 14:37Speaker 2: the State Department, which is one of the trickier places
- 14:39Speaker 2: to manage, with a lot of deep state in places.
- 14:42Speaker 2: He's making them turn in their travel and have it
- 14:45Speaker 2: reapproved if they had anything.
- 14:47Speaker 1: On the books.
- 14:49Speaker 2: So I think it's a good sign for at least
- 14:51Speaker 2: that area being managed well.
- 14:54Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 14:54Speaker 4: I think he's also I think he's an underrated, fantastic
- 14:57Speaker 4: pick for Secretary of State. He's a real true conservative,
- 15:02Speaker 4: he loves this country. He's just a great guy, I think.
- 15:06Speaker 4: And that is a fantastic move where I wouldn't have
- 15:10Speaker 4: even thought of it. I think that I love that
- 15:13Speaker 4: he or somebody on his team to think of it.
- 15:16Speaker 2: It's fantastic and it's one of those things that, like
- 15:19Speaker 2: the gender one, I felt surprisingly emotional about it. Oh,
- 15:23Speaker 2: like we can just opt out of that, we could
- 15:26Speaker 2: all just be Americans. And so I like that he's
- 15:29Speaker 2: taken taken the bull by the horns for that one.
- 15:33Speaker 1: I love it.
- 15:34Speaker 3: Any surprises for you or anything.
- 15:38Speaker 2: I think the birthright citizenship one is probably going to
- 15:41Speaker 2: fail and is dumb to spend a lot.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Of time on and energy on.
- 15:46Speaker 2: It's been discussed by the Supreme Court.
- 15:49Speaker 4: Right. I'm mixed on this only because, like I'm in
- 15:52Speaker 4: Facebook groups where people okay, the Russian speaking Facebook book groups,
- 15:56Speaker 4: I'll just say it, but people are like, Hey, I'm
- 15:58Speaker 4: planning to vacation in Florida, where can I give birth?
- 16:01Speaker 4: Or you know, in America doesn't be black, but where
- 16:04Speaker 4: can I give birth?
- 16:04Speaker 3: I live in you know, Moscow or something like that.
- 16:08Speaker 4: I think I'm not opposed to putting a stop to
- 16:10Speaker 4: stuff like that.
- 16:11Speaker 1: I don't know birth tourism specific.
- 16:14Speaker 4: Right, or I legal immigrants, you know, similar concept. But
- 16:19Speaker 4: if you're here legally and you you know, came here
- 16:24Speaker 4: legally and you're studying here or you're working or whatever,
- 16:27Speaker 4: and you have a child here and they are American,
- 16:30Speaker 4: I don't know, I am.
- 16:31Speaker 3: I am a little bit mixed on that.
- 16:32Speaker 4: I think if your intention is to be American and
- 16:35Speaker 4: you came here legally, that is something that I could support. Yeah,
- 16:40Speaker 4: the birth birth tourism really rubs me the wrong way.
- 16:42Speaker 4: I mean again, how many of those are there, I
- 16:45Speaker 4: don't know, But it's so blatant in so many like
- 16:49Speaker 4: spaces that I see that I just don't like it.
- 16:52Speaker 2: That kind of thing strikes me as the kind of
- 16:54Speaker 2: thing the left will just happily tell you doesn't exist
- 16:56Speaker 2: and it's just made up. But is absolutely not just
- 16:59Speaker 2: made up?
- 17:00Speaker 1: Right? Yeah?
- 17:01Speaker 4: Well, I mean and again going again not to target
- 17:04Speaker 4: my Russian speakers, but or you know, because that Russian
- 17:07Speaker 4: speakers could be from any part of the former Soviet Union.
- 17:10Speaker 4: But when I was at the border with Mexico last March.
- 17:15Speaker 4: The you know, the intake centers for illegal immigrants crossing
- 17:19Speaker 4: the border. The languages were Spanish and Russian. So make
- 17:23Speaker 4: of that what you will.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Yeah, Shall we talk about the January sixth pardons. Yeah,
- 17:29Speaker 2: So I was a little surprised because Vance said ten
- 17:32Speaker 2: days ago, nonviolent folks should not get a pardon, or
- 17:36Speaker 2: violent folks should not get a pardon.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Nonviolent one's fine. And then Pam BONDI.
- 17:41Speaker 2: I appreciated her saying I'd like to go case by
- 17:43Speaker 2: case on this, and I think that would be the
- 17:46Speaker 2: right thing to do.
- 17:47Speaker 1: That would be the right call.
- 17:49Speaker 2: However, media reports and others have been reporting that they
- 17:54Speaker 2: were having this internal discussion and Donald Trump and very
- 17:57Speaker 2: Donald Trump form was it's basically just like I'm listening.
- 18:02Speaker 1: I'm listening. I'm listening. If it release them all.
- 18:05Speaker 2: Now, I'm going to get into my I have like
- 18:08Speaker 2: sort of complicated feelings about January six and the way
- 18:11Speaker 2: these folks were treated. But there is a bad temptation
- 18:16Speaker 2: for Trump. What are the two decisions he's made where
- 18:19Speaker 2: he said ef itt, I'm not going with any of
- 18:22Speaker 2: y'all's advice. Matt Gates and this right, So I think
- 18:26Speaker 2: he has a tendency sometimes to be like, I don't
- 18:28Speaker 2: want to think about this too hard. I'm doing the thing.
- 18:30Speaker 2: I'm making a decision now, and sometimes it can be
- 18:34Speaker 2: not a great decision. In this case, I think there
- 18:37Speaker 2: are real civil libertarian concerns about January six defendants. It
- 18:42Speaker 2: is not a fake thing. Yeah, it's not a conspiracy theory.
- 18:46Speaker 2: They were not treated in traditional ways. They were overcharged,
- 18:49Speaker 2: they were over sentenced, they were kept without bail when
- 18:52Speaker 2: it was not necessary. Their data was dragneted to find
- 18:56Speaker 2: many of them.
- 18:57Speaker 1: To begin with.
- 18:57Speaker 2: I don't think there should have been fifteen hundred to charge.
- 19:01Speaker 1: However, there were one hundred and fifty that were charged with.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Using a deadly or I can't remember exactly the dangerous
- 19:10Speaker 2: or deadly weapon to inflict injury. So I would prefer
- 19:14Speaker 2: a distinction made between civil liberties issues and those who
- 19:19Speaker 2: were convicted of those kinds of crimes, and maybe just
- 19:21Speaker 2: commute them instead of pardoning, so that it's like it
- 19:24Speaker 2: didn't not exist.
- 19:27Speaker 3: Right. I agree with you completely.
- 19:29Speaker 4: I think that a case by case basis would have
- 19:31Speaker 4: been my preference. It's interesting because Trump did promise to
- 19:37Speaker 4: pardon them throughout the campaign, so this wasn't completely out
- 19:40Speaker 4: of nowhere.
- 19:41Speaker 3: You're right, though the Trump e fit moments, they could
- 19:45Speaker 3: go either way, And I think.
- 19:47Speaker 4: That that's it's interesting because he has some really good
- 19:50Speaker 4: people around him, but if he just dismisses them and
- 19:53Speaker 4: does whatever he wants, it really isn't always going to
- 19:57Speaker 4: be a home run.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:58Speaker 2: But and like it cuts against his law and order message,
- 20:01Speaker 2: it cuts against messages about right the right being supportive
- 20:05Speaker 2: of police.
- 20:05Speaker 1: And law enforcement. On the other hand, there are local Soros.
- 20:10Speaker 2: Das and left leaning days who are right now ratcheting
- 20:15Speaker 2: up the law fair yet again to try to go
- 20:18Speaker 2: after these defendants in new ways despite the pardons, and
- 20:22Speaker 2: I swear they are going to take an issue that
- 20:24Speaker 2: would be either neutral or not good for Trump, right,
- 20:27Speaker 2: and they are going to turn it into another win
- 20:29Speaker 2: for him.
- 20:29Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what they're incapable of understanding, is that they're
- 20:35Speaker 4: weak on crime but hard on anything related to Trump.
- 20:39Speaker 3: Is it might play.
- 20:40Speaker 4: In their small jurisdictions, it does not play nationally. It
- 20:43Speaker 4: ends up hurting them and their side. All of this
- 20:48Speaker 4: is like a concern for me going forward.
- 20:51Speaker 2: But yeah, I would love just to send the message
- 20:53Speaker 2: that political violence is bad and should be punished no
- 20:56Speaker 2: matter which side. Which then lets you go after the
- 20:58Speaker 2: rioters when they show up again, which they will.
- 21:01Speaker 4: On you love Yeah normally opposes political violence or really
- 21:05Speaker 4: most violence. Let's say, you know, I think this is
- 21:08Speaker 4: a show about peace loving show.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Really it is. That's what we do here.
- 21:13Speaker 4: Well, I think we've covered all the new Trump stuff.
