- 1:13Speaker 1: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I am Brian
- 1:26Speaker 1: and joining me via the magic of the internet is.
- 1:29Speaker 4: It's Sam. How's it going?
- 1:32Speaker 1: How's it going?
- 1:33Speaker 4: Hey, buddy. How you been?
- 1:36Speaker 1: We are back. It's been a little while. I'm going
- 1:40Speaker 1: to pretend to ask you a question in a minute.
- 1:43Speaker 1: I know both of us have had the last half
- 1:45Speaker 1: of this year has kind of sucked. So I'm going
- 1:47Speaker 1: to pretend like we don't know those things. And I'll
- 1:49Speaker 1: just be like, hey, how's it going?
- 1:51Speaker 4: Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Absolutely.
- 1:53Speaker 1: And you can give the fake answer that we both
- 1:55Speaker 1: give to random people on the street when they're like, hey,
- 1:58Speaker 1: what's going on? How's it going? I'm like, nothing. Fine.
- 2:01Speaker 4: Whatever.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Live in the dream. i don't know that i lied
- 2:06Speaker 1: that much i'm just like no here's the one i
- 2:09Speaker 1: keep giving people with no matter what it is whether
- 2:12Speaker 1: it's like how's it going today how was your christmas
- 2:16Speaker 1: you know any of your random ass questions i get
- 2:18Speaker 1: from people i'm like it's as good as it's gonna
- 2:20Speaker 1: get and they usually are like oh oh okay okay
- 2:26Speaker 1: i'm gonna go away now thank you mission accomplished.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Uh it's uh it's uh i the guy who goes
- 2:36Speaker 4: like i do not want to dive into that.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Right now i guarantee you don't you know okay excellent
- 2:44Speaker 1: as good as it's gonna get that's pretty great where
- 2:47Speaker 1: do you land on that scale oh yeah what do
- 2:50Speaker 1: i say usually to people i say like uh oh
- 2:52Speaker 1: man you know just making it happen you know you
- 2:57Speaker 1: are as far as i can tell you are making
- 3:00Speaker 1: it happen.
- 3:01Speaker 4: I mean making something happen you know not.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Sure what but something not usually what was on the
- 3:07Speaker 2: plan but uh something is happening and i i am
- 3:11Speaker 2: sometimes if not the cause the uh horrified witness so.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Uh that is our lives yeah witness to the horrification.
- 3:21Speaker 4: Somebody has to bear witness to the horror so you
- 3:24Speaker 4: know i mean i feel like sometimes that's that's my
- 3:27Speaker 4: that's my.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Main purpose that is our rule that's our lot in.
- 3:31Speaker 4: Life describe describe to view and just jot it down
- 3:36Speaker 4: on a post-it you know for.
- 3:38Speaker 1: A document this nonsense that's going on yeah that's kind
- 3:41Speaker 1: of what this show is really it's like i just
- 3:43Speaker 1: check in every once in a while and document what
- 3:46Speaker 1: we're going to do. And then it goes off the
- 3:49Speaker 1: rails immediately. And then we've documented that off the rail
- 3:52Speaker 1: catastrophe as it happens. So yeah, that's, that's kind.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Of how we operate. Yeah.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:57Speaker 4: Man plans, God laughs. So, you know, it's, it's, we
- 4:01Speaker 4: should just let, let what needs to happen, happen, you know?
- 4:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Cool.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Cool.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Cool.
- 4:08Speaker 4: All right.
- 4:10Speaker 1: We have survived thus far. So as, as, Kind of
- 4:15Speaker 1: always with ours, but I mean, every once in a while,
- 4:17Speaker 1: we'll almost make a plan by accident, possibly.
- 4:20Speaker 4: By accident, right.
- 4:21Speaker 1: But this one was just more of like, you just
- 4:24Speaker 1: want to hang out and do that thing we do? Yeah.
- 4:26Speaker 1: And we're like, sure, why not?
- 4:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:28Speaker 1: So, I think we have some general movie viewings. I'm
- 4:33Speaker 1: sure we'll stumble upon many larger questions, as we always do, but...
- 4:39Speaker 1: I guess, where would you like to begin on this
- 4:41Speaker 1: crazy journey?
- 4:42Speaker 4: Well, you know, I do have something I got to
- 4:45Speaker 4: get off my chest and everything about the Christmas season
- 4:49Speaker 4: and the viewing of Christmas. I'm just going to get
- 4:54Speaker 4: into it, if you don't mind.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Oh, please do. Okay, so....
- 5:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel like Eric Boghossian or something. I feel
- 5:03Speaker 4: like we're on talk radio or something.
- 5:06Speaker 1: I mean, we kind of are.
- 5:07Speaker 4: We kind of are. This is kind of cool.
- 5:09Speaker 1: I feel like that's how it works. We just get
- 5:11Speaker 1: in front of the microphone and say a bunch of
- 5:13Speaker 1: crazy nonsense.
- 5:13Speaker 4: I was wondering why Oliver Stone was in my shed
- 5:16Speaker 4: here and setting up a 360 dolly track around me.
- 5:19Speaker 4: Is there a.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Grassy knoll near your house? I would be aware of
- 5:25Speaker 1: that if I were you. Just, you know, I think
- 5:28Speaker 1: he's documenting something else right about now.
- 5:31Speaker 4: I think so. What happened to Oliver stone? I mean,
- 5:33Speaker 4: do you remember the nineties when he was like, uh,
- 5:36Speaker 4: the peak of, you know, artistry of, of cinematic achievement
- 5:41Speaker 4: and artistry and.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Everything kind of pushing the envelope, like not real technically,
- 5:46Speaker 1: sometimes technically, but definitely like trying to make a statement,
- 5:50Speaker 1: whether you agree or disagree with it. Like he was
- 5:53Speaker 1: making a statement with every movie.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 5:56Speaker 1: And I don't know. He made Snowden, didn't he? Like, yeah,
- 6:00Speaker 1: but even my recently, but that didn't even feel like
- 6:03Speaker 1: he was pushing the envelope anymore.
- 6:05Speaker 4: Isn't that weird, though, that his movies like a Snowden,
- 6:08Speaker 4: which is a well-made film or World Trade Center, which
- 6:10Speaker 4: is a well-made film? It doesn't. There's something oddly missing
- 6:16Speaker 4: about those movies or they don't have the. impact or
- 6:20Speaker 4: were we just so media saturated back in that time
- 6:25Speaker 4: that we actually thought these things were more important than
- 6:28Speaker 4: they were. And now that we're kind of like grownups,
- 6:30Speaker 4: you know, an Oliver Stone movie comes out and, you know,
- 6:34Speaker 4: you go like, oh yeah, an Oliver Stone movie comes out.
- 6:36Speaker 4: But when we were younger and Oliver Stone movie coming
- 6:39Speaker 4: out was like an event. It was like, this movie
- 6:42Speaker 4: is going to rattle some cages. This movie is going
- 6:45Speaker 4: to provoke some people. Uh, this movie is going to, uh,
- 6:49Speaker 4: you know, win all the Oscars. And, and now they
- 6:52Speaker 4: come out and they're like, you know, uh, I'm not
- 6:55Speaker 4: provoked or, you know, I'll see it when it comes out,
- 6:58Speaker 4: you know, later.
- 6:59Speaker 1: I think it's a little of at least two different things,
- 7:02Speaker 1: maybe more, but I'd say definitely one, even back in
- 7:06Speaker 1: the nineties, which to me doesn't seem that long ago,
- 7:09Speaker 1: but I don't want to do the math because it's
- 7:11Speaker 1: scary when I do. So in the, just a few
- 7:15Speaker 1: minutes ago, nineties, uh, even that short an amount of
- 7:18Speaker 1: time in my brain, there was way less stuff. So
- 7:21Speaker 1: I feel like, and everything, it was one direct channel.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Everything came rolling out into your movie theater and there
- 7:28Speaker 1: were only a handful, you know, this month, these four
- 7:31Speaker 1: big releases might be coming out, you know.
- 7:33Speaker 4: Each weekend you might. There was less. So there was less. So,
- 7:37Speaker 4: you know, they could, they could present these things with
- 7:42Speaker 4: more buildup and give it more of a showcase. Now
- 7:46Speaker 4: it's like, let's make as much stuff as humanly possible,
- 7:51Speaker 4: send it out as fast as we can, and just
- 7:54Speaker 4: keep filling the pipeline so quickly that, you know, even
- 7:58Speaker 4: if Oliver Stone made something as the caliber of a platoon,
- 8:03Speaker 4: it would just get buried instantly because Oliver Stone is A,
- 8:08Speaker 4: old news, and so nobody wants to hear about Oliver Stone.
- 8:10Speaker 4: You know, John Woo just came back, you know, and
- 8:12Speaker 4: made this movie that I hear was amazing. you know,
- 8:17Speaker 4: I don't even think it's in theaters.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Anymore, dude.
- 8:19Speaker 4: I mean, it's just like, I think.
- 8:20Speaker 1: That's part of it. I think half of it is
- 8:22Speaker 1: the pace at which things are thrown at us now.
- 8:25Speaker 1: And also just for the specific Oliver Stone one, I
- 8:29Speaker 1: think the same thing that's going on, you were asking like,
- 8:31Speaker 1: are we older and more mature in our viewing habits?
- 8:35Speaker 1: He's also an older, different filmmaker now. So it's like
- 8:38Speaker 1: he was making and focusing on very different stuff when
- 8:41Speaker 1: he was 35 years younger, you know, it's just like it,
- 8:45Speaker 1: it moving ahead. I'm like, now maybe he's not as
- 8:48Speaker 1: hungry as he was to get stuff out there. And
- 8:50Speaker 1: now maybe they're a little more polished, but they're not
- 8:53Speaker 1: pushing the envelope anymore.
- 8:55Speaker 4: Right, right. They're poor polish in that, in that they're just, uh, he,
- 8:59Speaker 4: everybody knows what they're doing at a certain point and
- 9:02Speaker 4: they sort of know what they're going to get out
- 9:04Speaker 4: of it. I think when you're making those first films,
- 9:08Speaker 4: you know, you think this is going to be the
- 9:10Speaker 4: one that I can, you know, it's like everything after
- 9:13Speaker 4: up to the thing for John Carpenter, you know, then
- 9:16Speaker 4: it's like, then it's like after the thing, he's got like,
- 9:19Speaker 4: I got nothing left to prove, man. I can basically
- 9:21Speaker 4: be on autopilot. I can be on autopilot and do
- 9:24Speaker 4: big trouble little China. So, I mean, it's like, uh,
- 9:27Speaker 4: it doesn't really matter.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Still epic, but in a very different way than the thing. Right.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Right. And just like, you know, he goes like, okay,
- 9:36Speaker 4: I swung, I hit a home run. There was no crowd. Uh,
- 9:41Speaker 4: To appreciate it. So, you know, I pretty much just
- 9:45Speaker 4: got to I've got to reset my expectations of what
- 9:48Speaker 4: I'm going to get out of this.
- 9:50Speaker 1: It's going to take me quite a few years to
- 9:53Speaker 1: reach my true masterpiece, Ghost of Mars.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Ghost of Mars. That's right. That's right. Which is which
- 9:57Speaker 4: is basically a greatest hits album for John Carpenter.
- 10:01Speaker 1: It's just another one of those like after like the
- 10:05Speaker 1: escape from la which just became segmented things of like
- 10:09Speaker 1: okay every 15 minutes we're gonna do another thing right
- 10:11Speaker 1: ghost of mars kind of fell into that too of
- 10:13Speaker 1: like here's some other stuff that's gonna happen Okay, well,
- 10:16Speaker 1: let's change it up and do some other stuff in
- 10:18Speaker 1: 15 minutes. It's just, I don't know. It's a weird
- 10:21Speaker 1: delivery system that he came up with as he got older.
- 10:25Speaker 4: It truly is. It truly is. And yeah, you know,
- 10:27Speaker 4: I mean, you just start these movies. Actually, I find
- 10:33Speaker 4: age well, like what you would call it. Mouth of
- 10:38Speaker 4: Madness was, I thought, pretty second tier Carpenter, maybe lower
- 10:44Speaker 4: second tier into the third tier. That movie, though, I
- 10:48Speaker 4: keep going back to, you know. I need to revisit it.
- 10:51Speaker 1: It has been a long time. I have forgotten most
- 10:54Speaker 1: of what happens. Yeah. Yeah.
- 10:55Speaker 4: So and and some of these movies also even Escape
- 10:59Speaker 4: from L.A. I haven't revisited it, but it is such a.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I feel like it's burned into my mind.
- 11:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Whether I want it or not, it's burned into my brain.
- 11:09Speaker 4: Of like a, it was kind of like an appetizer
- 11:12Speaker 4: for the disappointment of Phantom Menace. You know, it was
- 11:14Speaker 4: kind of like the late nineties. Oh, here's this thing
- 11:17Speaker 4: you really, really, you know, hype for, and it was
- 11:21Speaker 4: a disappointment. So, you know, you didn't realize, you know,
- 11:23Speaker 4: it was a omen for disappointments to come.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Actually, it reminds me just yesterday, another member of this
- 11:31Speaker 1: cast and I were discussing movies and it reminds me
- 11:34Speaker 1: very much of the similar pattern. We were talking about Gremlins.
- 11:39Speaker 1: And how awesome Gremlins is.
- 11:41Speaker 5: Right.
- 11:42Speaker 1: And Dante wanted it to be a goofy comedy with
- 11:44Speaker 1: a bunch of wacky little Gremlin characters doing silly things.
- 11:48Speaker 5: Right.
- 11:48Speaker 1: And you had the other end of it of like
- 11:49Speaker 1: Chris Columbus and Steven Spielberg going, no, this is going
- 11:53Speaker 1: to work because it's a horror movie. Like, go ahead
- 11:55Speaker 1: and make it sort of, you know, a little silly
- 11:58Speaker 1: every once in a while. But for the most part,
- 11:59Speaker 1: make it creepy and scary. Right. And it hits and
- 12:02Speaker 1: it works. And then he has license to do whatever
- 12:05Speaker 1: the hell he wants. And he's like, oh. Well, I'm
- 12:07Speaker 1: going to make a sequel and I'm going to do
- 12:08Speaker 1: it my way.
- 12:09Speaker 4: Right, right.
- 12:10Speaker 1: And the studio went, great, go for it. And it's
- 12:13Speaker 1: like a silly comedy version of the same movie.
- 12:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:16Speaker 1: That's Escape from L.A. It's like you get the basic concept.
- 12:20Speaker 1: You get that same character come back. You get it's
- 12:24Speaker 1: just a goofy comedy version of the same story.
- 12:28Speaker 4: Right, right.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a weird thing that sometimes they give these
- 12:32Speaker 1: directors license to almost remake their own idea. And they're like,
- 12:35Speaker 1: I'm going to make it funny this time. I'm talking
- 12:37Speaker 1: to Sam Raimi. Yeah, totally. I'm going to make it
- 12:40Speaker 1: funny this time. I was just thinking.
- 12:42Speaker 4: I was just thinking. Yeah, I mean, that was sort
- 12:43Speaker 4: of the odd thing when seeing especially, you know, Evil
- 12:48Speaker 4: Dead 2, but especially Army of Darkness, just how they
- 12:52Speaker 4: progressively lean more and more into the comedy. A lot of,
- 12:57Speaker 4: even Texas Chainsaw 2 is more, you know.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Definitely way more comedic. Comedic, right, right. It's very obvious
- 13:05Speaker 1: that it's a comedy, whereas you don't get that from
- 13:07Speaker 1: that first movie. The first movie is traumatizing for a
- 13:10Speaker 1: lot of people and doesn't, almost never winks at the camera,
- 13:15Speaker 1: cracks a smile within its own facade. Like it is
- 13:18Speaker 1: set in, no, this is what's going on and it's horrible.
- 13:22Speaker 1: You know, it's like, that is not the tone on
- 13:24Speaker 1: that second one.
- 13:25Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, totally, totally. Yeah, so I think, what I
- 13:28Speaker 4: think is, I think Joe Dante's case, you know, I think,
- 13:34Speaker 4: I think all that sense of humor, yeah, definitely, as
- 13:36Speaker 4: you said, comes from Dante. From what I have read,
- 13:38Speaker 4: it was once he got the gremlins on the set
- 13:42Speaker 4: and realized what they were and what they did best,
- 13:46Speaker 4: he goes like, well, we can't do this serious, you know?
- 13:49Speaker 4: I mean, we gotta, we kinda gotta make this fun,
- 13:52Speaker 4: you know? And, uh, And, and he's really just such
- 13:56Speaker 4: a smart ass and kind of like from a different
- 13:59Speaker 4: generation of bite the hand that feeds you. And so,
- 14:03Speaker 4: you know, it just like, don't, you know, just, you know,
- 14:07Speaker 4: maintain some dignity while you're catching this check, you know?
- 14:11Speaker 1: I mean, it is coming from that. He's coming out
- 14:14Speaker 1: of that late sixties. Yeah. Easy rider format of like, okay,
- 14:18Speaker 1: we're the new kids. We're going to make movies our
- 14:20Speaker 1: way and screw the studio system. And so he does
- 14:23Speaker 1: have sort of that little, sort of hippie rebellion attitude
- 14:26Speaker 1: of like, damn the man, I'm going to do it
- 14:27Speaker 1: my way. Like, yeah, yeah, definitely, definitely.
- 14:31Speaker 4: And to, you know, just to, to, you know, to,
- 14:33Speaker 4: you know, take some punch upwards, you know? And, uh,
- 14:37Speaker 4: and so, you know, that's, what's, that's, what's, uh, cool
- 14:40Speaker 4: about the vibe of those, those things, uh, that, yeah, they,
- 14:44Speaker 4: I don't think they really, I don't know. I don't
- 14:47Speaker 4: see as much as I used to. So, I mean,
- 14:49Speaker 4: maybe there's something going on out there right now that
- 14:51Speaker 4: has that kind of spirit, but you know, My wife
- 14:54Speaker 4: and I were just talking the other day is like nowadays,
- 14:57Speaker 4: you know, people are there is none of that. It's like,
- 15:01Speaker 4: how fast can I sell out as quickly as possible?
- 15:06Speaker 4: You know, whatever.
- 15:07Speaker 1: But it's that. But it's also hitting on like totally
- 15:10Speaker 1: different formats that like doesn't even register with the old system. Yeah,
- 15:15Speaker 1: this was again, this was last night. They were rerunning
- 15:17Speaker 1: an SNL from like. not that long ago because it's
- 15:22Speaker 1: since it had a Chalamet pushing for the new Wonka thing,
- 15:25Speaker 1: which we can go down that road if you want.
- 15:27Speaker 1: But he did, he, he did the, the, I think
- 15:30Speaker 1: he did this character the first time he was on
- 15:32Speaker 1: where he's like the, the Tik TOK star more or less.
- 15:35Speaker 4: Okay.
- 15:36Speaker 1: And like, he's sitting there with like, he's supposedly like
- 15:38Speaker 1: got a trillion followers on, you know, his social media.
- 15:43Speaker 1: And he's sitting there with these, like, it's like the
- 15:45Speaker 1: rap legend. So it's like, I don't know. It has
- 15:48Speaker 1: all these like, established old school, like mass media, like
- 15:53Speaker 1: people that have spent their lives building a career in
- 15:56Speaker 1: the sound and putting together this, you know, entire system
- 16:01Speaker 1: that they built through the studios and like, Then you've
- 16:04Speaker 1: got this idiot over here that's just spouting nonsense. Because
- 16:08Speaker 1: hip-hop is more than music. We spend our pain into poetry. Yeah, yeah.
- 16:13Speaker 4: And that energy resonates with people all over the world.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Yes, and moreover, its precious history empowers the people to express, invest,
- 16:24Speaker 1: and progress to a better tomorrow.
- 16:26Speaker 5: Yeah, me, I don't know, man.
- 16:27Speaker 1: I guess I'm just like chilling, you know what I'm saying?
- 16:31Speaker 4: Okay, first of all, I'm going to need to see
- 16:32Speaker 4: your face, young man.
- 16:34Speaker 1: You're in a museum, so. Oh, yeah, my bad, miss.
- 16:37Speaker 4: So, like, when they discovered hip-hop, what, like 2014?
- 16:41Speaker 1: What? No, 50 years ago. That's why we're all here.
- 16:46Speaker 5: All right.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Yeah, because to me, like, if it slapped, like, yeah,
- 16:49Speaker 1: the opps going to slide, but the ends be popping regardless,
- 16:54Speaker 1: you feel me? I don't know what any of that means.
- 16:58Speaker 4: Yes, expound on that, please, brother, to Smoke Chat.
- 17:02Speaker 1: So, like, peep, right?
- 17:03Speaker 4: I do mukbangs, right? I eat noodles on stream.
- 17:08Speaker 1: And, like, my DMs be all cheese. I'm talking blah, blah, blah.
- 17:12Speaker 1: I'm like, sheesh. And has... a massive following and like
- 17:16Speaker 1: they don't understand they're just like i don't know what
- 17:18Speaker 1: any of that means like he's just saying nonsense like
- 17:20Speaker 1: it doesn't matter because there's people to back him up
- 17:23Speaker 1: no matter how stupid it is as long as enough
- 17:25Speaker 1: people show up to view you and get you funding
- 17:29Speaker 1: to do these things it doesn't matter you don't have
- 17:31Speaker 1: to build a career anymore you just have to build
- 17:33Speaker 1: an audience and you're there so i think it's that
- 17:36Speaker 1: kind of stuff that's like same thing with film. Like
- 17:39Speaker 1: you can be working your whole life, trying to build
- 17:41Speaker 1: something through the old school studio system. Doesn't matter when
- 17:45Speaker 1: some kid comes along with a whole new format that
- 17:47Speaker 1: you don't understand. It just blows you out of the water.
- 17:49Speaker 4: Pretty much, man. Pretty much. So, I mean, my hat's
- 17:52Speaker 4: off to them and everything. I mean, that's, that's freaking great.
- 17:55Speaker 4: You know, it's just, I guess it's, I guess it's
- 17:59Speaker 4: a lot.
- 18:00Speaker 1: I mean, sure.
- 18:01Speaker 4: You got to talk about a potato chip every 60 minutes, but, but,
- 18:05Speaker 4: you know, I mean, I guess that's just the way
- 18:07Speaker 4: it is.
- 18:07Speaker 1: I mean, Luckily, there are a lot of new crazy
- 18:10Speaker 1: flavors of potato chips. So, you know, it gives you
- 18:13Speaker 1: a lot of new material there. Yeah.
- 18:16Speaker 4: Thank God. Thank God for Frito-Lay, you know, feeding the
- 18:19Speaker 4: cultural discourse.
- 18:22Speaker 1: I do like that other countries have started just odd tangent,
- 18:26Speaker 1: but they've started like pulling our nonsense off their shelves. Oh, really?
- 18:31Speaker 1: Britain has pulled Mountain Dew off the shelves. Because the
- 18:35Speaker 1: stuff in it is so harmful that they're like, whoa,
- 18:38Speaker 1: we can't sell this to our citizens.
- 18:41Speaker 4: Oh, man. Maybe Doritos.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Like there were several other. There was definitely like candies
- 18:46Speaker 1: that they pulled off the shelf because they were so horrible.
- 18:48Speaker 1: They're like, we can't sell this. This goes against our standards. Meanwhile,
- 18:53Speaker 1: back in America, we're down in two liters of Mountain Dew.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Be like, yeah, this is awesome.
- 18:58Speaker 4: That's the breakfast of champions right there.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Hell yeah.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Mountain Dew get you through. So, you know, no, during
- 19:05Speaker 4: the holiday season, you know, you go to like one
- 19:07Speaker 4: of those swanky places like Publix or like Sam's Club,
- 19:12Speaker 4: you know, and they got walking around are fancy. I'll
- 19:16Speaker 4: do Publix. I don't I don't know about Sam's Club.
- 19:18Speaker 4: All right. But you go you go into a Publix
- 19:21Speaker 4: or a Sam's Club, a fancy place, you know, for
- 19:23Speaker 4: fancy people. And the people are out there with their
- 19:27Speaker 4: little tables giving out samples, right? And it's usually a
- 19:31Speaker 4: Swedish meatball or some kind of frozen entree that Publix
- 19:38Speaker 4: will be cooking there and will give you a sample
- 19:41Speaker 4: of a ham sandwich or something like that.
- 19:42Speaker 1: I think all of these are run by Big Toothpick,
- 19:44Speaker 1: by the way.
- 19:45Speaker 4: By Big Toothpick.
- 19:46Speaker 1: I mean, they're the ones coming out ahead on all
- 19:48Speaker 1: these free samples. Oh my God.
- 19:51Speaker 4: The guy who invented the toothpick, he nailed it, man.
- 19:54Speaker 4: Nailed it. There has been no toothpick innovation yeah.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Where's the robot that comes along that's stealing your your
- 20:02Speaker 1: toothpick jobs.
- 20:03Speaker 4: Yeah right where's where's my bluetooth uh enabled toothpick actually.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Don't don't invite that because it'll.
- 20:09Speaker 4: Happen oh it's.
- 20:12Speaker 1: A hand-free toothpick now it's like it just hovers it's
- 20:15Speaker 1: got a little built-in drone action that brings the appetizer
- 20:19Speaker 1: up to your face and fires it in.
- 20:22Speaker 4: Fantastic. Brian, you're a visionary.
- 20:25Speaker 1: I keep telling people that, but they always disagree.
- 20:28Speaker 4: Yeah, well, I mean, that's gold. That is gold right there.
- 20:33Speaker 4: But anyway, so you go to those places, you get fancy.
- 20:37Speaker 4: They actually tried at my local Walmart, went in to
- 20:40Speaker 4: get some stuff. They actually had people with little samples,
- 20:45Speaker 4: little sample tables. The samples were the latest flavor of Dorito,
- 20:50Speaker 4: and Dr. Pepper.
- 20:56Speaker 1: I've never heard of these things. I better have a sample. Dr. Pepper,
- 21:03Speaker 1: you say?
- 21:04Speaker 4: It's more like, it was like, who doesn't know what
- 21:06Speaker 4: a Dorito, I mean, I don't even know how new
- 21:08Speaker 4: the thing of Doritos were. I just saw Doritos in
- 21:11Speaker 4: little cups and Dr. Pepper in another little cups. And
- 21:16Speaker 4: I was like, are these samples or is this like
- 21:19Speaker 4: a refilling station, kind of like marathon runners? I mean,
- 21:21Speaker 4: are they just trying to keep everybody hydrated?
- 21:24Speaker 1: They throw Doritos at your face as you go by?
- 21:26Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Like, there you go, buddy. Catch a few in your
- 21:29Speaker 1: mouth as you keep going.
- 21:31Speaker 4: All right, I'm going to keep going. I'm going to
- 21:32Speaker 4: keep going.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Go buy more stuff. Must buy more stuff. That's right.
- 21:36Speaker 1: That's how consumerism works, damn it.
- 21:38Speaker 4: That's how it happens, man. That's how it happens. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 21:42Speaker 4: So the Walmart sample stations were pretty much like, they
- 21:47Speaker 4: know their audience.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Yes, yes, they do. Mistake number one, going to Walmart.
- 21:53Speaker 1: So yeah, they definitely know their people's. Right.
- 21:55Speaker 4: And they were telling me, sir, just one cup, sir, sir.
- 21:59Speaker 1: You've downed six already. What? Huh? I just see these.
- 22:03Speaker 1: I start. You can't keep me away from them.
- 22:05Speaker 4: That's right. You got to go in fast. You got
- 22:06Speaker 4: to go in fast before they realize what's happening. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Man,
- 22:12Speaker 4: so holiday season. So, yeah, about holiday viewing.
- 22:16Speaker 1: All right.
- 22:17Speaker 4: So, you know, everybody knows. In 1983, I think it was. Yeah,
- 22:22Speaker 4: my grandmother took me to see Christmas Story. So that.
- 22:25Speaker 4: It's been in my brain since, you know, 83.
- 22:28Speaker 1: It's all downhill from 1983.
- 22:31Speaker 4: Right. Pretty much.
- 22:32Speaker 1: We reached the pinnacle of Christmas story. And that's it.
- 22:36Speaker 1: It's all downhill.
- 22:37Speaker 4: Yeah, that's it. They haven't made one to replace it yet.
- 22:39Speaker 4: You know, Polar Express is for like dead eyed automatons.
- 22:45Speaker 4: I mean, I don't really know.
- 22:46Speaker 1: It's weird because I keep hearing kids that like. still
- 22:49Speaker 1: like that and every time i look at him just
- 22:51Speaker 1: like oh like i just get a shiver up my
- 22:54Speaker 1: spine as i'm like i'm all for the robots taking
- 22:57Speaker 1: over but they don't need to look like that i
- 22:59Speaker 1: mean come on right at least make them look like
- 23:01Speaker 1: cool robots.
- 23:02Speaker 4: Exactly lifeless soul dead-eyed yeah tom hanks and that's not
- 23:07Speaker 4: what i'm looking for that's that's not doesn't spell christmas for.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Me tom hanks is a national treasure how do you
- 23:12Speaker 1: make him dead-eyed and creepy like what's wrong with you.
- 23:15Speaker 4: It's almost like george romero's polar express i mean it's
- 23:18Speaker 4: just Very messed up. And everything that's evil. But I
- 23:23Speaker 4: think they probably showed it in the public school system,
- 23:25Speaker 4: you know, that last week before Christmas break, you know,
- 23:29Speaker 4: when everybody's had their tests and nothing else to do.
- 23:32Speaker 4: So we'll watch Polar Express, you know. I guess they
- 23:35Speaker 4: probably don't wheel out the VCR and TV tray thing.
- 23:40Speaker 4: In my head, that's what they do. But it's probably
- 23:43Speaker 4: not that anymore.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Coming down the hallway, you're like, yes!
- 23:46Speaker 4: Yes! Dude, it was like Christmas.
- 23:48Speaker 1: There was a fist pump there if you didn't hear it.
- 23:50Speaker 4: Oh, dude, I heard it. I felt it. I felt
- 23:54Speaker 4: it in my soul, that fist pump. And so, Christmas movies, right.
- 23:59Speaker 4: So anyway, so Christmas story, everybody knows it, everybody loves it.
- 24:02Speaker 4: Even if you don't like it, you probably end up
- 24:04Speaker 4: seeing it three times a year.
- 24:05Speaker 1: Yeah, you may hate it, but you still quote it
- 24:08Speaker 1: on a daily basis throughout December. Right, right. Begrudgingly, maybe,
- 24:12Speaker 1: but you still kind of do.
- 24:14Speaker 4: Absolutely, absolutely. So, in the probably five years ago. I
- 24:19Speaker 4: don't know, before Corona, I guess the networks were desperate
- 24:22Speaker 4: to get people to tune in to NBC, you know?
- 24:26Speaker 4: And so they were doing that spat of live musicals.
- 24:29Speaker 1: I remember watching more of those than I really planned to, probably.
- 24:33Speaker 4: Sure, sure. They were kind of like events. It was
- 24:36Speaker 4: kind of like the last hurrah of the vent television.
- 24:39Speaker 4: Get everybody to tune in at the same time. Watch
- 24:41Speaker 4: this special thing. We're going to bring back live television
- 24:44Speaker 4: and They did a handful. I guess, I mean, now
- 24:46Speaker 4: it's probably been eight years ago or so since that's
- 24:51Speaker 4: all been going on. But anyway, so have you seen
- 24:54Speaker 4: the Christmas Story live musical?
- 24:57Speaker 1: Again, dork that I am, I... think i watched that
- 25:01Speaker 1: one on tv but i actually if not last year
- 25:04Speaker 1: the year before went and saw it in person well
- 25:08Speaker 1: i i knew someone involved in a production and they
- 25:11Speaker 1: were like oh you should come see this because you're
- 25:13Speaker 1: a dork you love the movie i'm sure you'll want
- 25:15Speaker 1: to see this and so i saw a live presentation
- 25:19Speaker 1: of it right in front of me so i and
- 25:20Speaker 1: it's all kind of based on that same version i
- 25:23Speaker 1: think so okay i think i'm familiar with it at
- 25:27Speaker 1: least to some extent.
- 25:28Speaker 4: Okay okay all right so Here was my take on it,
- 25:32Speaker 4: all right? So it starts off like, oh, wow, they're
- 25:39Speaker 4: really going for it. Look at all this production value.
- 25:42Speaker 4: I mean, this was the live version. You appreciate the
- 25:46Speaker 4: effort and the work and the choreography and everything. You're
- 25:51Speaker 4: going like, man, they really laid into this to try
- 25:55Speaker 4: to make a quality product or a quality piece of
- 25:58Speaker 4: entertainment here. And I'm going like, oh, I'm lowering my guard.
- 26:01Speaker 4: I'm going like, hey, you know what?
- 26:03Speaker 1: This isn't bad.
- 26:04Speaker 4: And sometimes, kind of like the Beetlejuice musical, it kind
- 26:08Speaker 4: of fleshes some stuff out. So you're hoping for that.
- 26:11Speaker 4: You're hoping that it's going to flesh some stuff out.
- 26:13Speaker 1: They also sort of take advantage of that because... theater
- 26:18Speaker 1: gives you so much more freedom. Like there's so many
- 26:20Speaker 1: things you would see in a play and not even blink.
- 26:23Speaker 1: But if they did it in a movie, you'd be like, Oh,
- 26:26Speaker 1: what is this? Like you would just immediately be put
- 26:28Speaker 1: off by it. So like they have that freedom to
- 26:31Speaker 1: also like take something that's just a minute within the
- 26:34Speaker 1: movie and then turn it into a song and dance
- 26:37Speaker 1: number and just expand on the concept. Like the thing
- 26:40Speaker 1: that was the most specific of this type of thing
- 26:43Speaker 1: in that was the, uh, the major award. Like just
- 26:47Speaker 1: the mention of it in the movie, but then we
- 26:49Speaker 1: get an entire dad song and dance number built around
- 26:53Speaker 1: it with all these women and their fancy legs. And
- 26:56Speaker 1: I'm just like, this is a cool concept. But again,
- 26:59Speaker 1: it's like, if this were in the movie, you'd be like,
- 27:01Speaker 1: what the hell? Like, there's no way you would be
- 27:04Speaker 1: okay with it. But because of the live production aspect,
- 27:07Speaker 1: like it, it opens it up and you're just like, yes,
- 27:10Speaker 1: this is a great new thing they've added.
- 27:12Speaker 4: So.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Okay.
- 27:14Speaker 4: All right. That, that, Okay, that brings me to the
- 27:18Speaker 4: point of this thing, all right, that they made, all right,
- 27:23Speaker 4: that it starts off great. My wife actually said, I
- 27:28Speaker 4: think I like this better than the movie Christmas Story.
- 27:31Speaker 4: I think I like the vibe of it.
- 27:33Speaker 1: That's almost crazy, but I know people think that about
- 27:38Speaker 1: a lot of live presentation things versus, you know, the
- 27:41Speaker 1: regular version.
- 27:42Speaker 4: Right, right. So it starts off fine. And you're going like,
- 27:46Speaker 4: I'm really enjoying this. At some point, it starts to
- 27:51Speaker 4: turn on you. And at some point, a Christmas Story
- 27:56Speaker 4: live musical becomes an act of torture, an act of
- 28:02Speaker 4: brutality that is almost, you know, inhuman. I mean, it's
- 28:08Speaker 4: almost like, it is almost like, you think they probably
- 28:12Speaker 4: show that at Guantanamo. Because, I mean, it's... It starts
- 28:16Speaker 4: off so, like, happy. And then at some point, you
- 28:21Speaker 4: realize that you are trapped in a room full of
- 28:24Speaker 4: theater people. And they're all so precocious and alive and
- 28:32Speaker 4: eager to please that it becomes obnoxious. And then you
- 28:40Speaker 4: can't get out because... your recliner's laid back and you're
- 28:44Speaker 4: really much in the remote is just out of reach.
- 28:46Speaker 4: So you're kind of like Malcolm McDowell in Clockwork Orange.
- 28:53Speaker 4: It becomes, it becomes incrementally so painful to watch. And
- 29:00Speaker 4: then because they, it is almost three hours long and
- 29:06Speaker 4: they do have a 20 minute dance rehearsal for, for,
- 29:10Speaker 4: a major reward award. It's like, Oh my God, get
- 29:15Speaker 4: to the point. Every second they keep stopping to do
- 29:20Speaker 4: another dance musical. And at first it's like, okay, I'm
- 29:24Speaker 4: okay with this.
- 29:24Speaker 1: But at a certain.
- 29:25Speaker 4: Point it's, it's, uh, I remember I, I never do.
- 29:31Speaker 4: Like there was such a backstory for like the teacher,
- 29:34Speaker 4: you know, I mean the teacher has like, that.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Has no backstory whatsoever in the movie.
- 29:40Speaker 4: She's almost like a primary character she's given so much
- 29:46Speaker 4: everything every story beat is given such equal attention and
- 29:53Speaker 4: gravitas that it pretty much just becomes a loud screeching
- 29:58Speaker 4: mess And by the time it was over and it
- 30:02Speaker 4: just still wouldn't end, they were trying to wrap it up.
- 30:04Speaker 4: And everybody's coming out and bowing. It's like, dude, you
- 30:07Speaker 4: shouldn't bow. You shouldn't bow. You should not be proud
- 30:11Speaker 4: of what you've done here. Because you basically have anybody
- 30:15Speaker 4: who may have been interested in musical theater, you just
- 30:18Speaker 4: ruined it for them. And they're going to cite this
- 30:21Speaker 4: thing as the thing that made them hate musicals forever.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Forever. Forever. I feel like you've chosen a side. Well,
- 30:30Speaker 1: I'm like, I like. As you're talking about it, I'm like,
- 30:40Speaker 1: I'm listening to your story about this specific Christmas story,
- 30:43Speaker 1: but I am applying it to the entire season. Well,
- 30:46Speaker 1: we start with, you know, it seems like such a
- 30:49Speaker 1: good vibe and everything's going to go great. And by
- 30:51Speaker 1: the end, it's like torture. And I'm like, Merry Christmas.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Can we move on? Can we move on? Can we
- 31:00Speaker 1: just get this over with and move on to the
- 31:02Speaker 1: new year?
- 31:03Speaker 4: Please.
- 31:04Speaker 1: That's how it works. I like it. I like it.
- 31:07Speaker 1: And then also it's, yeah, I think it's also just
- 31:09Speaker 1: that musical thing. If you're not a musical person, be
- 31:13Speaker 1: it live theater or film production. Like I, I think
- 31:18Speaker 1: the most, cause I went for most of my life
- 31:21Speaker 1: and just didn't really fully connect with it at all.
- 31:25Speaker 1: So the most specifically perfect thing in my mind was,
- 31:30Speaker 1: I believe James Belushi of all people. Okay. In the
- 31:34Speaker 1: middle of Little Shop of Horrors, he goes, hold it, sorry,
- 31:38Speaker 1: don't mean to interrupt. If you two kids could just
- 31:40Speaker 1: stop singing for a minute. And I'm like, where's that
- 31:43Speaker 1: character in every musical? Yeah, right. We've actually got to
- 31:47Speaker 1: move on with the plot. If you two kids could
- 31:49Speaker 1: stop singing and dancing for a minute, let's move on
- 31:52Speaker 1: with this movie. So I kind of like that as
- 31:56Speaker 1: a slap in the face. Here's reality for you. Let's
- 32:01Speaker 1: move on. So yeah, I feel like that. you're either
- 32:04Speaker 1: for it or against it. It's rare that you balance
- 32:08Speaker 1: yourself on both sides of that.
- 32:10Speaker 4: I think you nailed it, Brian. I think that's the
- 32:12Speaker 4: problem with, uh, I mean, I, there are musicals I
- 32:15Speaker 4: like and I get into, and because, you know, a,
- 32:17Speaker 4: the music's, you know, if the music sucks, you know,
- 32:19Speaker 4: what's the point, you know, but I mean, if it's
- 32:22Speaker 4: the music's good and, and the plot moves forward, but
- 32:25Speaker 4: that's the problem. It's like, you got to stop to sing.
- 32:29Speaker 4: And sometimes it's organic and it flows and it furthers
- 32:32Speaker 4: the characters and it makes, But sometimes it's just like,
- 32:35Speaker 4: it seems so indulgent, you know? It's like, so like, uh,
- 32:38Speaker 4: so like, uh, as much as I like, we'll say
- 32:41Speaker 4: like Mary Poppins, you know, that whole sweet street bird
- 32:46Speaker 4: dance routine in the middle that just stops the movie
- 32:48Speaker 4: dead cold.
- 32:49Speaker 1: And you're going like, you gotta stop and feed the birds, man.
- 32:52Speaker 7: I mean, and I'm going like, all right, all right, let's,
- 32:57Speaker 7: let's move this along. And then it was like 20
- 32:59Speaker 7: more minutes of, uh, them dancing on the roof.
- 33:02Speaker 4: And I'm going like, all right, all right.
- 33:04Speaker 1: What you need is an opera. Yeah, there we go.
- 33:07Speaker 1: There's a nice rock opera. It is just built in.
- 33:10Speaker 1: So there's no stopping and starting. Right. You start the
- 33:13Speaker 1: story and every song continues on through the story. Right.
- 33:18Speaker 4: Right.
- 33:19Speaker 1: That's, that's more of what you're looking for.
- 33:21Speaker 4: I think so. Maybe so. I love, uh, I mean,
- 33:24Speaker 4: I guess when it's, it's weird, it's just how they
- 33:26Speaker 4: kind of weave it in, you know, like, uh, oh
- 33:29Speaker 4: man like uh like uh i did see phantom of
- 33:32Speaker 4: the paradise recently and that's that was uh that's i
- 33:35Speaker 4: guess considered a rock opera but you know you're not
- 33:37Speaker 4: like pissed off that they stopped to see i mean
- 33:40Speaker 4: it's more i guess it's handled in a different way
- 33:42Speaker 4: it's not in a broadway kind of way you.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Know yeah it's definitely not broadway right right right although
- 33:47Speaker 1: i'm surprised they haven't done like they've taken every movie
- 33:50Speaker 1: and turned it into like a broadway musical type it's
- 33:52Speaker 1: true the fact that they haven't done Phantom of the pair,
- 33:56Speaker 1: at least to my knowledge, if you're out there in
- 33:57Speaker 1: a production right now, I guess right in and let
- 33:59Speaker 1: us know. But to my knowledge, they have, I mean,
- 34:02Speaker 1: even of all the evil dead, the musical and so
- 34:06Speaker 1: many horror themed and Beetlejuice and stuff like that, that
- 34:09Speaker 1: doesn't seem like it would lend itself to that, but
- 34:12Speaker 1: yet they, you know, clever people find a way.
- 34:14Speaker 4: So that's right.
- 34:15Speaker 1: Yeah. I'm surprised they haven't done a Phantom of the paradise,
- 34:18Speaker 1: the musical.
- 34:19Speaker 4: Right. Right.
- 34:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:20Speaker 4: I'm, it, it, I think we put it out there.
- 34:23Speaker 4: Now it's, now it's, it's for me.
- 34:25Speaker 1: It's for me.
- 34:26Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah. That's good.
- 34:27Speaker 1: That's good.
- 34:28Speaker 4: Yeah. We, we can, anyway, so that was the tirade
- 34:33Speaker 4: about that, but yeah. So, I mean, we could, I'm
- 34:37Speaker 4: going to, I'm going to take a breath here. So,
- 34:40Speaker 4: so yeah.
- 34:41Speaker 1: Did you finish most of your thoughts on a Christmas story?
- 34:44Speaker 4: I'm done. I'm done.
- 34:45Speaker 1: I was going to say, I have one. that I
- 34:49Speaker 1: specifically watched recently because I wanted to discuss the subgenre
- 34:53Speaker 1: with you. Okay. And I didn't know it was a
- 34:56Speaker 1: Christmas movie. So I know we're out of Christmas now.
- 34:58Speaker 1: So for you, you know, listening in the future here,
- 35:01Speaker 1: we've escaped from Christmas, but we're still sort of wrapping
- 35:04Speaker 1: up our thoughts. And again, I didn't see this movie
- 35:06Speaker 1: till after Christmas considerably. So I was just like, had
- 35:10Speaker 1: no idea it was a Christmas movie. And I feel
- 35:12Speaker 1: like that also ties in as I continue the discussion.
- 35:15Speaker 4: Excellent.
- 35:16Speaker 1: But, um, Have you seen the ads for Family Switch?
- 35:22Speaker 4: Uh, no. And I'm kind of like, is that a
- 35:27Speaker 4: movie or a TV show?
- 35:29Speaker 1: Take your pick. It sounds like it could be either, right? Okay.
- 35:33Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely. I mean, it sounds like, what, wife-swapping the show?
- 35:38Speaker 1: Thankfully, we don't go down that road, because I don't
- 35:42Speaker 1: know that I would be prepared for that. But it
- 35:46Speaker 1: is some swapping of sorts. Okay, please explain.
- 35:50Speaker 4: I have no point of context for this.
- 35:55Speaker 1: Well, I saw it pop up as a future advertisement
- 36:00Speaker 1: on Netflix, and I was like, oh no, what is this?
- 36:04Speaker 1: And then, as I saw what it was, I was like, okay,
- 36:07Speaker 1: now I need to see it just for the continuing subgenre.
- 36:13Speaker 1: I don't know if I've ever seen one that goes
- 36:16Speaker 1: on as strong as the concept of body swapping, but
- 36:22Speaker 1: now think about it. Every few years they do another one.
- 36:26Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 36:26Speaker 1: And it's like with minor exception, there's been a few
- 36:30Speaker 1: that have done well, but for the most part, they
- 36:32Speaker 1: all kind of fall flat and people are just like, Oh,
- 36:35Speaker 1: that again. Yeah. And yet every couple of years they'll
- 36:39Speaker 1: bring big stars in to do another one.
- 36:42Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 36:42Speaker 1: Like that's, that's so weird to me that like a
- 36:46Speaker 1: thing that doesn't exist. It's not like this is an
- 36:48Speaker 1: actual thing that takes place in your day-to-day life that
- 36:52Speaker 1: I know of. Once again, if you have swapped bodies
- 36:54Speaker 1: with someone, let us know. But to my knowledge, this
- 36:57Speaker 1: is a fake fictional thing. But it's become such an
- 37:02Speaker 1: ongoing thing in film that it's a sub-genre of its
- 37:05Speaker 1: own now.
- 37:06Speaker 4: It's true.
- 37:07Speaker 1: It's true.
- 37:08Speaker 4: I guess you would consider the glory years being the... uh,
- 37:13Speaker 4: Armageddon deep impact one, two punch of the Kirk Cameron movie.
- 37:17Speaker 4: And then the, what the George Burns movie, this is
- 37:20Speaker 4: like 1989 or something. Maybe the high watermark. Yeah.
- 37:25Speaker 1: Plus like, well, 88, you're coming out of big, which
- 37:29Speaker 1: is almost like its own offshoot of like the solo
- 37:32Speaker 1: body switch movie. Like you're switching with your future self.
- 37:36Speaker 1: which is rare. Like usually you switch with someone else
- 37:39Speaker 1: and you get the freaky Friday of it all. But instead, yeah,
- 37:43Speaker 1: you get big, which is sort of a little offshoot version,
- 37:46Speaker 1: but still totally falls in there. Yeah. So that's probably
- 37:50Speaker 1: the most successful and maybe the best done. I mean, yeah. Yeah.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Penny Marshall kind of hit something there that even she
- 37:58Speaker 1: never really fully got back to that level after that.
- 38:00Speaker 1: So no, no. Once again, using national treasure Tom Hanks
- 38:05Speaker 1: to do it. Sure.
- 38:06Speaker 4: Sure.
- 38:07Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 38:07Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 38:08Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 38:09Speaker 4: I mean, that's it's just some people have so much charisma.
- 38:12Speaker 4: They could basically be reading the phone book. Yeah. They,
- 38:17Speaker 4: you know, they put they put Tom Hanks alone and
- 38:20Speaker 4: on an island talking to a volleyball.
- 38:22Speaker 1: And people love.
- 38:24Speaker 2: Right.
- 38:25Speaker 1: Right. Right.
- 38:26Speaker 4: I mean, we'll watch Tom Hanks do anything.
- 38:28Speaker 1: One of his most beloved films.
- 38:30Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 38:30Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 38:31Speaker 4: Absolutely. Fun at parties.
- 38:33Speaker 1: So usually there's like two people and they Freaky Friday
- 38:36Speaker 1: it and they swap bodies and then they have to
- 38:38Speaker 1: like live in each other's bodies and it's a whole
- 38:40Speaker 1: different crazy wacky thing. So the way that this is different.
- 38:45Speaker 1: And as soon as I saw that trailer come up,
- 38:47Speaker 1: I was like, oh, I see what we're doing here.
- 38:50Speaker 1: This is. We are treading new ground.
- 38:52Speaker 4: This is going to be a whole.
- 38:54Speaker 1: New plateau of intellectual property here. We usually have two people.
- 39:00Speaker 1: This is an entire family that switches bodies.
- 39:04Speaker 4: It's like alien versus aliens. That's awesome.
- 39:07Speaker 1: The entire family switches bodies. Are you comprehending?
- 39:11Speaker 4: I'm trying to. I don't know how they're going to
- 39:14Speaker 4: set that up unless the devil is involved. That's a
- 39:18Speaker 4: whole other thing.
- 39:18Speaker 1: We'll get to that. But there's mom and dad, two kids,
- 39:22Speaker 1: and then there's also, here's the best, worst part, also
- 39:27Speaker 1: including the baby and the dog.
- 39:30Speaker 4: Okay. So the baby is going to be destroyed. All right.
- 39:34Speaker 4: It's going to psychologically destroy the baby. All right. Oh, no, no, no.
- 39:38Speaker 1: It's going to run around like a puppy dog.
- 39:41Speaker 4: Oh, wait a minute. So wait, what? So the baby
- 39:43Speaker 4: goes inside the puppy?
- 39:44Speaker 1: The baby and the dog and the family dog swap.
- 39:47Speaker 1: So the dog walks around on two legs like a
- 39:50Speaker 1: toddler and the baby runs on all fours and tries
- 39:53Speaker 1: to run away and chew on things and drinks out
- 39:55Speaker 1: of a bowl.
- 39:56Speaker 4: Hey, are you messing with me right now?
- 39:59Speaker 1: You think I'm making this up. It's a sad thing.
- 40:01Speaker 4: Wait, okay. So it's not a family. Wait a minute.
- 40:05Speaker 4: So it's not a family switching with a different family.
- 40:09Speaker 1: No, no. It's within the own set family. Every personality switches.
- 40:15Speaker 1: But not that far off because it's basically they don't
- 40:18Speaker 1: change genders. It's just the parents swap with the kids
- 40:21Speaker 1: and the dog and the baby swap. That's pretty much it.
- 40:25Speaker 2: All right.
- 40:26Speaker 1: Are you OK? Did you have an aneurysm?
- 40:29Speaker 4: I'm not. I'm trying to. I really I. I've known
- 40:33Speaker 4: you for a little while, so I know you're not
- 40:35Speaker 4: into the practical. I mean, you've never punked me before.
- 40:39Speaker 1: I don't need to because Hollywood delivers stuff way dumber
- 40:44Speaker 1: than I could ever make up.
- 40:45Speaker 4: So the baby's brain goes inside the dog.
- 40:49Speaker 1: Yes.
- 40:49Speaker 4: And the dog goes inside the baby.
- 40:53Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 40:55Speaker 4: And the baby is old enough to toddler, I guess.
- 40:59Speaker 1: It doesn't really have speaking lines, so it's not a
- 41:02Speaker 1: talking baby yet. But it is a barely walking baby.
- 41:06Speaker 4: Yeah, that's so messed up.
- 41:11Speaker 1: You see what I'm saying?
- 41:12Speaker 4: That's so messed up.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Insanity.
- 41:14Speaker 4: That's so messed up. So, I mean, and they're leaving
- 41:17Speaker 4: money on the table with like transgenderism being such a
- 41:22Speaker 4: topic nowadays.
- 41:24Speaker 1: It seems like there's way more opportunities they could have
- 41:26Speaker 1: had if they also switched genders. But this one, I
- 41:29Speaker 1: think they're focusing more on the put yourself in my
- 41:34Speaker 1: shoes of it. So that's kind of more of where
- 41:37Speaker 1: they go. Okay.
- 41:40Speaker 4: Okay. So the dad is going to realize that it's really...
- 41:45Speaker 4: man my wife works really hard keeping the house going
- 41:49Speaker 4: and managing a career like Sarah Jessica Parker and you
- 41:52Speaker 4: know packing the sandwiches I think.
- 41:55Speaker 1: You're in a different movie because they stick within the
- 41:57Speaker 1: same gender so it's teenage son swaps with dad teenage
- 42:03Speaker 1: daughter swaps with mom so it's You don't understand what
- 42:06Speaker 1: my life is like. It's so difficult being a kid
- 42:09Speaker 1: in high school. You don't understand what my life is
- 42:11Speaker 1: like because I'm a working mom and I have a
- 42:13Speaker 1: meeting to go to and I still have to pack
- 42:15Speaker 1: your lunch and make sure you kids get your homework done.
- 42:17Speaker 1: And like, yeah, it gives us a good amount of
- 42:20Speaker 1: time of like, look how complicated their lives are. And
- 42:23Speaker 1: then we swap. Wow.
- 42:27Speaker 4: OK, so this would be this would be terrible. All right,
- 42:30Speaker 4: because immediately.
- 42:32Speaker 1: You're having this as a real life thing now, not
- 42:35Speaker 1: not the movie. You're saying this as a thing that
- 42:38Speaker 1: would happen to you would be terrible.
- 42:40Speaker 4: Well, I'm just saying, well, I mean, of the movie,
- 42:43Speaker 4: which is everything is going.
- 42:45Speaker 1: To be terrible.
- 42:46Speaker 4: This is all this is going to be a litany
- 42:48Speaker 4: of terrible things. OK, because, OK, a. If this was
- 42:53Speaker 4: a movie and you say like, hey, write this terrible movie.
- 42:56Speaker 6: All right.
- 42:56Speaker 4: I mean, my gut first idea instinct is the teenage
- 43:01Speaker 4: son will go into the father's job and basically quit
- 43:06Speaker 4: within like 10 minutes because jobs are stupid. Jobs are stupid.
- 43:13Speaker 4: This is not what I'm meant to do. I'm supposed
- 43:16Speaker 4: to be a recording artist. And this is I can't
- 43:21Speaker 4: believe these people are sitting here doing this.
- 43:24Speaker 1: What's weird is you you went the right road, but
- 43:28Speaker 1: the opposite way. OK, the dad was going to be
- 43:32Speaker 1: a rock star and he gave all that up to
- 43:35Speaker 1: be a dad. So now he's like a boring high
- 43:37Speaker 1: school music teacher. So he gets a chance to be
- 43:41Speaker 1: cool again. Oh, no. Because all the things he does
- 43:45Speaker 1: as an old man just makes him look lame. But
- 43:47Speaker 1: if he does it when he's like 13 or 14,
- 43:49Speaker 1: he's a cool high school kid again.
- 43:51Speaker 4: Dude, guess what? Guess what? Going back to being a
- 43:57Speaker 4: high schooler in a high schooler body would not make
- 44:00Speaker 4: you cool all of a sudden.
- 44:01Speaker 1: All right.
- 44:02Speaker 4: You have been beaten down into the lame person that
- 44:06Speaker 4: you are and you switching bodies isn't going to change that.
- 44:09Speaker 4: All right.
- 44:09Speaker 1: They almost get that right because the high school boy
- 44:12Speaker 1: is so traumatized by being in high school. Like he
- 44:15Speaker 1: barely leaves the house. He goes through this like mission impossible,
- 44:19Speaker 1: like trip through the hallway to avoid coming in contact
- 44:23Speaker 1: with pretty much all kids, but definitely you're like bully
- 44:26Speaker 1: character who looks like he's in his mid thirties. So,
- 44:30Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, it's like such an ordeal for him
- 44:33Speaker 1: to even go to school. They kind of get that right.
- 44:37Speaker 1: That's how, to me, high school is that traumatic on
- 44:39Speaker 1: a regular basis. So that part seems accurate. Okay. So,
- 44:45Speaker 1: but okay.
- 44:46Speaker 4: I think that, okay. So I think the dad would
- 44:49Speaker 4: be shocked to find out that in his life full
- 44:53Speaker 4: of compromises, that he's just not that musician anymore.
- 44:57Speaker 1: Oh, he's probably not. Don't worry. He's got a dad
- 45:01Speaker 1: rock band, though.
- 45:04Speaker 4: The kids, if it's not Midwest emo, as my kid
- 45:09Speaker 4: tells me is the popular thing, if they made this
- 45:12Speaker 4: movie the way they should have made this movie. This,
- 45:17Speaker 4: this would be, this would have the same effect of
- 45:19Speaker 4: making you appreciate what you have, but it would, they'd
- 45:23Speaker 4: need to tell this honestly. All right.
- 45:26Speaker 8: It is not at all honest like that's the thing
- 45:30Speaker 8: we don't even here's what I think is funny in
- 45:33Speaker 8: any body swap movie is like the second it happens
- 45:37Speaker 8: you're just gonna be messing with your junk like.
- 45:40Speaker 1: Let's be real as a human being like you're just
- 45:43Speaker 1: gonna be like what the hell is going on here
- 45:45Speaker 1: especially if you gender reverse that's when it really should
- 45:48Speaker 1: get interesting like whoa what the hell is going on
- 45:51Speaker 1: here the untold story of these gender swap movies. We
- 45:55Speaker 1: do not go down that road at all. The closest
- 45:58Speaker 1: we get is the daughter swaps into the mom and
- 46:00Speaker 1: then is looking at her butt in the mirror and
- 46:03Speaker 1: is like, hey mom, look, you got a giant butt.
- 46:06Speaker 4: That's awesome.
- 46:07Speaker 1: That's as close to that as we sort of graze by.
- 46:12Speaker 4: It would pretty much have to be the plot would
- 46:15Speaker 4: have to be saved for the sequel. And this would
- 46:17Speaker 4: be one of those movies that, you know, it's just like,
- 46:19Speaker 4: oh man, it was all buildup to them actually doing,
- 46:21Speaker 4: leaving the bathroom. But it did it. You know, it
- 46:25Speaker 4: never got there.
- 46:26Speaker 1: Days worth of all of them standing in front of
- 46:28Speaker 1: the mirror.
- 46:29Speaker 4: You'd have to see the, you'd have to see, Have
- 46:32Speaker 4: the superimposed calendar days flipping by on the flip calendar. Flip, flip, flip, flip.
- 46:37Speaker 4: Tech talk hands going by, you know, like a Sam
- 46:41Speaker 4: Raimi montage, you know. And then finally, three weeks later,
- 46:47Speaker 4: then we can start.
- 46:48Speaker 1: Three weeks later all right right i mean you get
- 46:53Speaker 1: the there's ones that attempt to do like a forgotten
- 46:56Speaker 1: one i always think the all of me where we
- 46:59Speaker 1: get lily tomlin trying to use a urinal right it's
- 47:03Speaker 1: like okay that's that's a moment you would be like
- 47:06Speaker 1: what the hell is going on here and how do
- 47:09Speaker 1: you even do this every day what the so there's
- 47:12Speaker 1: moments when they kind of go down that road but
- 47:14Speaker 1: yeah Family switch, that is not the road they go down. Now,
- 47:17Speaker 1: don't think it's because... I mean, thank God.
- 47:21Speaker 4: Don't think it's because.
- 47:22Speaker 1: They're taking the high road. Because that's what, as I
- 47:25Speaker 1: got into this, I was like, wow. This is a
- 47:29Speaker 1: checklist of every dumb modern comedy trope that you could
- 47:34Speaker 1: ever have. It's like, you know, can we... get some
- 47:39Speaker 1: fart jokes in there yeah definitely we're gonna have an
- 47:41Speaker 1: extended one of those can some dude get hit in
- 47:44Speaker 1: the nuts of course we'll get that in there can
- 47:47Speaker 1: we be driving down the road and a car knocks
- 47:50Speaker 1: the door off while you're oh yeah we can get
- 47:53Speaker 1: that in there don't you worry like every cliche thing
- 47:57Speaker 1: that happens in a dumb comedy totally comes through here
- 48:00Speaker 1: so don't you worry it does not take the high
- 48:03Speaker 1: road at all. Yeah.
- 48:05Speaker 4: So, so why are you making this? I mean, if
- 48:07Speaker 4: you don't really have like a real fresh take on
- 48:10Speaker 4: it and you're just, it's like fart jokes. I mean,
- 48:13Speaker 4: I get it. It's entertaining, but why are you not
- 48:15Speaker 4: trying to like, why would you make something? I mean,
- 48:20Speaker 4: I don't want an R rated, but.
- 48:22Speaker 1: I would like, you do really.
- 48:24Speaker 4: I would, I was kind of, I mean, but you can't,
- 48:27Speaker 4: you can't be like, you got an opportunity here. I mean,
- 48:31Speaker 4: give us something honest, you know, just give us like
- 48:34Speaker 4: an honest take on the story of what it would be.
- 48:36Speaker 4: I would watch that. But this thing that you're talking about,
- 48:40Speaker 4: I mean, it might be like a train wreck kind
- 48:45Speaker 4: of viewing. That kind of thing.
- 48:47Speaker 1: At moments is. Again, I think it switches gears. Like
- 48:50Speaker 1: it takes the low road quite often. And that's the
- 48:53Speaker 1: thing is like, I feel like the drama part of
- 48:56Speaker 1: it isn't that bad.
- 48:58Speaker 4: If they would have just given.
- 48:59Speaker 1: In and been like, okay, we're going to focus on
- 49:01Speaker 1: this family drama thing and like have some comedic, you know,
- 49:04Speaker 1: fish out of water moments. But for the most part,
- 49:06Speaker 1: just deal with them kind of coming to terms with
- 49:10Speaker 1: each other's lives. And like, if you just went ahead, okay,
- 49:12Speaker 1: it's going to be sappy because the sappy moments kind
- 49:15Speaker 1: of work. That's the disturbing part. all right there's a
- 49:18Speaker 1: moment in both storylines of like the dad and the
- 49:21Speaker 1: son and the mom and the daughter having this moment
- 49:24Speaker 1: after you know two days of this craziness they're like
- 49:27Speaker 1: wow i really didn't understand what you do to get
- 49:32Speaker 1: through your life. And like, there's moments when they had that,
- 49:35Speaker 1: that I'm like, wow, this is kind of genuine. Like
- 49:37Speaker 1: I'm buying into this moment. This is a cool moment.
- 49:40Speaker 1: And then it's right back to some sort of pratfall bullshit.
- 49:45Speaker 1: I wish they would lean one way or the other.
- 49:47Speaker 1: If they were just nothing but dumb stuff, I could
- 49:49Speaker 1: just avoid it altogether. But there was enough promise there
- 49:52Speaker 1: that I'm like, all right, I kind of want to
- 49:54Speaker 1: see what they do with the premise. And then I
- 49:56Speaker 1: get suckered in with the moments and there's decent performances,
- 50:00Speaker 1: but they just, Within a few minutes, they will go
- 50:03Speaker 1: right back to some sort of cliche comedy nonsense. All right.
- 50:07Speaker 4: All right. And this is on Netflix?
- 50:09Speaker 1: It is created by Netflix.
- 50:12Speaker 4: By a Netflix film. And who is in it?
- 50:15Speaker 1: So this is the thing. It also has a pretty
- 50:18Speaker 1: impressive cast if you're a modern comedy kind of a person.
- 50:21Speaker 1: You're pulling in the big guns here. It's starring as
- 50:24Speaker 1: the parents, Ed Helms and Jennifer Garner. Okay. Which, by
- 50:29Speaker 1: the way, is star of one of those movies. popular
- 50:32Speaker 1: movie yeah 13 go out on 30 right.
- 50:35Speaker 4: I don't know that i don't know that i don't
- 50:36Speaker 4: know yes you do i don't know they.
- 50:38Speaker 1: Pulled that in as and that's what's funny it gets
- 50:41Speaker 1: to a point of being self-aware that like when this
- 50:44Speaker 1: happens and they're all standing around the kitchen like talking
- 50:46Speaker 1: at the same time trying to figure out what the
- 50:48Speaker 1: hell is going on they make these comments Like one
- 50:51Speaker 1: of them's like, oh, people don't just get big overnight.
- 50:55Speaker 1: Look at me. I'm 13 going on 30.
- 50:58Speaker 4: They say that?
- 50:59Speaker 1: They say it out loud. Ryan, this is terrible.
- 51:03Speaker 4: You got brainwashed by the sentimentality of like two scenes.
- 51:07Speaker 4: I'm telling you.
- 51:09Speaker 1: It has here's what suckered me in though because i
- 51:13Speaker 1: don't really know the son that much but the daughter
- 51:17Speaker 1: is emma myers who is the adorable werewolf girl from
- 51:21Speaker 1: wednesday and i saw that in the trailer i was
- 51:23Speaker 1: like she is awesome like i kind of want to
- 51:25Speaker 1: see what she does next so okay this is where
- 51:28Speaker 1: it led me oh my god like again she is
- 51:30Speaker 1: solid in this like she is just a good actress
- 51:34Speaker 1: and like she's She's a sporty kid and she's into
- 51:37Speaker 1: soccer and like she's not a fancy girl. So it's
- 51:39Speaker 1: like she lays into that stuff and is really good
- 51:42Speaker 1: at it.
- 51:42Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 51:43Speaker 1: And it's a shame it's in the rest of this
- 51:44Speaker 1: ridiculous nonsense.
- 51:45Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 51:46Speaker 1: But but as far as pulling in the rest, like
- 51:48Speaker 1: I'm not Bradley Noon is the son, which he looks familiar,
- 51:52Speaker 1: but I can't name the other stuff he's been in.
- 51:54Speaker 1: But it's also an excuse to just work in as
- 51:56Speaker 1: many other like. I've got friends in Hollywood, so I'm
- 51:59Speaker 1: going to make the weird, mysterious character that might be
- 52:03Speaker 1: involved in all this craziness, Rita Morano. Rita Morano.
- 52:08Speaker 8: Okay.
- 52:08Speaker 1: Classic Hollywood actress. Who's that? Uh, wasn't she in like
- 52:12Speaker 1: West side story?
- 52:13Speaker 4: Like, I mean, she's old school.
- 52:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:16Speaker 4: Okay.
- 52:16Speaker 5: Got it.
- 52:17Speaker 4: Got it. Got it. Got it.
- 52:18Speaker 1: Recently come out of retirement. Cause I know she was
- 52:20Speaker 1: in that rebooted one day at a time. Okay.
- 52:23Speaker 4: Like, okay.
- 52:23Speaker 1: She's kind of back in action. So they pull her
- 52:26Speaker 1: in as like old Hollywood royalty. Yeah. We got some big,
- 52:29Speaker 1: but then you work in again, any random comedy, you
- 52:32Speaker 1: got to work Paul sheer in there. Um, my God,
- 52:36Speaker 1: I think the biggest showcase of, um, look, I've got
- 52:40Speaker 1: famous friends. As I said, Dad's a past rock and
- 52:44Speaker 1: roller that's still kind of living the dream. So he's
- 52:47Speaker 1: got a dad band called Dad Are Alive.
- 52:50Speaker 4: Yeah, go ahead.
- 52:52Speaker 1: All right, that's funny. No, that's funny. Oh, and they
- 52:55Speaker 1: have an awesome logo, I'll give you. The cool logo,
- 52:58Speaker 1: when you watch this movie, which I know now you're
- 53:00Speaker 1: going to, the logo behind them when they play is
- 53:03Speaker 1: pretty badass if you're going to have a dad rock band.
- 53:05Speaker 1: But at the beginning... They come like running up to
- 53:11Speaker 1: him like, oh, we got this big showcase we get
- 53:13Speaker 1: to play. And I'm like, that guy runs up to
- 53:16Speaker 1: him from the band. I'm like, that's the dude from Weezer.
- 53:19Speaker 4: What?
- 53:19Speaker 1: The entire rest of his dad rock band is Weezer. What?
- 53:24Speaker 1: No joke.
- 53:25Speaker 4: I'm I'm I don't even know.
- 53:28Speaker 1: Right. Exactly. That's what I'm saying.
- 53:30Speaker 4: But don't you think? Don't you know? Okay, don't you
- 53:35Speaker 4: resent that a little bit, that they're pandering to people
- 53:39Speaker 4: of a certain demographic because they know they'll watch this
- 53:42Speaker 4: terrible damn thing because they got Weezer in it? I mean,
- 53:45Speaker 4: don't you know, don't you hate it when they, like,
- 53:50Speaker 4: make some terrible piece of freeze dried crap. And that
- 53:53Speaker 4: they put somebody that you really respected it because that
- 53:56Speaker 4: person needed a paycheck. And so, God damn it. Now
- 53:59Speaker 4: I've got to watch this damn thing.
- 54:00Speaker 1: I thought more. It was the other way of like,
- 54:03Speaker 1: it was Weezer just admitting to themselves that they're a
- 54:05Speaker 1: dad rock band that happened to become successful because now
- 54:09Speaker 1: they're just a bunch of old dudes. They make a
- 54:11Speaker 1: ton of money playing live shows. So, right. They're just
- 54:15Speaker 1: a dad rock band that happened to catch on when
- 54:17Speaker 1: they were a little younger, but now they're just dad rock, so.
- 54:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 54:21Speaker 4: Oh, well, that's actually a good take on it, Brian.
- 54:23Speaker 4: That's a lot better.
- 54:24Speaker 1: That's a lot better. That's probably why they signed on.
- 54:27Speaker 1: They were like, well, I mean, that's pretty much what
- 54:29Speaker 1: we are, so okay, I guess we'll do it, so.
- 54:31Speaker 1: You know what?
- 54:32Speaker 4: It's really weird. I would not like my parents' music
- 54:36Speaker 4: just on principle, okay? All right? And my kids... listen
- 54:43Speaker 4: to some of the same bands. I mean, and we're
- 54:46Speaker 4: like Weezer is still popular amongst people of a lot
- 54:50Speaker 4: of ages, not just old fuckers like us.
- 54:54Speaker 1: Well, that's the thing. There is no grouping anymore. Like
- 54:59Speaker 1: everything that sort of changed when you had like a
- 55:03Speaker 1: regular delivery system, much like movies. The music is the
- 55:07Speaker 1: same way. It's like there's not regular radio rock. It's
- 55:10Speaker 1: still out there, but it's all run by one big
- 55:12Speaker 1: clear channel, if you will. And they like, they own
- 55:16Speaker 1: all the stations. So they play the same 10 songs.
- 55:19Speaker 1: So if you're going to find anything else, you're going
- 55:21Speaker 1: out on your own. So kids are just sort of left.
- 55:23Speaker 1: Cause we used to sit like in front of MTV
- 55:25Speaker 1: and like the new 50 songs that were out there
- 55:29Speaker 1: were fired at you all day long. Cause they had
- 55:31Speaker 1: a lot of room to cover and they, people were
- 55:34Speaker 1: making videos all of a sudden. So they had like, cool,
- 55:36Speaker 1: let's get all these on the air. We want to
- 55:38Speaker 1: get more stuff out there. Whereas now it's like the
- 55:41Speaker 1: only thing that's popular is like mainstream wise is like the,
- 55:45Speaker 1: they play the same 10 songs over and over. So
- 55:47Speaker 1: I think kids are smarter than that. And they're just like, Oh,
- 55:50Speaker 1: well there's other stuff out there. Let's go find it.
- 55:53Speaker 1: So now they're just on their own and they just
- 55:55Speaker 1: search the internet or where they hear music on fucking
- 55:58Speaker 1: tick tocks. And they're just like, what's that? And then
- 56:00Speaker 1: go down a rabbit hole and figure out, Oh, they
- 56:03Speaker 1: use this song from 30 years ago.
- 56:05Speaker 4: And that's right.
- 56:05Speaker 1: This is kind of cool. So, cause I agree. Over Christmas,
- 56:09Speaker 1: I sat there with my nephew, who is now kind
- 56:13Speaker 1: of a grown dude, and it's really disturbing. But it's
- 56:16Speaker 1: funny because he almost skipped a generation. He listens to
- 56:19Speaker 1: the crap my dad was listening to. Yeah, right? And
- 56:22Speaker 1: he's into classic rock stuff. And he's asking me about
- 56:28Speaker 1: Beatles songs and Dylan. And I'm just like, you know
- 56:31Speaker 1: you're a teenager, right? And it's not the 1960s. Why
- 56:34Speaker 1: are you into this stuff? But that's, you know, that's
- 56:39Speaker 1: the thing. Kids deep dive and they come to the
- 56:41Speaker 1: same conclusions that parents did years ago, I guess. When
- 56:44Speaker 1: you find stuff that resonates with you, you just stick
- 56:47Speaker 1: with it. But yeah, it's really weird because kids just
- 56:50Speaker 1: don't have the specific things served up to them in
- 56:54Speaker 1: a little way. box like they used to back in
- 56:57Speaker 1: the day. Everything was like, oh, you're into this type
- 56:59Speaker 1: of music. You're a metal kid. You listen to these
- 57:01Speaker 1: 10 bands. You're an alternative kid. You listen to these
- 57:04Speaker 1: 10 bands. You're into rap. You listen to these. You know,
- 57:06Speaker 1: it's like we don't have that anymore. Now everything's like
- 57:09Speaker 1: just sort of free form. Go find whatever you want,
- 57:12Speaker 1: which I guess is better, really.
- 57:14Speaker 4: But it's so much better.
- 57:15Speaker 1: It doesn't. It doesn't. give you a specific like it's
- 57:19Speaker 1: going to be hard looking back because now I can
- 57:21Speaker 1: be like listening to a song and be like man
- 57:23Speaker 1: this so sounds like the 90s you know this is
- 57:25Speaker 1: such an 80s song you're not going to be like
- 57:27Speaker 1: oh this is so 2020s because it's just going to
- 57:31Speaker 1: be a mess of stuff like all our influences now
- 57:34Speaker 1: are just a big pot and it's all boiling together I.
- 57:38Speaker 4: Guess that's great though right I mean in a bigger
- 57:41Speaker 4: sense I guess it is yeah yeah I mean I
- 57:44Speaker 4: think that's right I think they follow a rabbit hole
- 57:46Speaker 4: And they pass through bands. And because I think the
- 57:49Speaker 4: cost prohibit, it was so cost prohibitive to be a
- 57:53Speaker 4: real music eater, you know, I mean, to like get
- 57:57Speaker 4: a album was like 15 to 20 bucks, you know,
- 57:59Speaker 4: and so you really had to be real selective about
- 58:02Speaker 4: the things that you bought. And, you know, when you
- 58:05Speaker 4: went off a wing and spent 20 bucks and it sucked,
- 58:07Speaker 4: you know, you felt like, God, I wasted my money
- 58:09Speaker 4: and you can't return it.
- 58:10Speaker 1: You know, I'll go to the secondhand store and get
- 58:12Speaker 1: a dollar back for it. Maybe, maybe lucky if it's
- 58:16Speaker 1: a brand new and I'll get a dollar back.
- 58:18Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, exactly. Or you follow a band and they
- 58:20Speaker 4: have the, you know, the $ 20, uh, you spend $ 20
- 58:24Speaker 4: on their first album. It was great. The $ 20 of
- 58:26Speaker 4: the second album, you got about, you know, two good
- 58:29Speaker 4: songs on it, you know, and then. If you pay
- 58:32Speaker 4: for the third one, it sucks. It was more expensive
- 58:37Speaker 4: to really follow those rabbit holes back in the day.
- 58:40Speaker 1: And you couldn't really sample things other than what was
- 58:43Speaker 1: on the radio. So if you wanted to be all
- 58:45Speaker 1: in on it, you just had to go buy the
- 58:47Speaker 1: album and sit there and listen to it. Whereas now,
- 58:50Speaker 1: everything's essentially free. Not really. It's part of what destroyed
- 58:54Speaker 1: the music industry.
- 58:55Speaker 4: But essentially, you.
- 58:57Speaker 1: Can go on just freaking YouTube and I can find
- 58:59Speaker 1: damn near any song I want, listen to it for free.
- 59:02Speaker 1: Maybe I skip through an ad. But for the most part,
- 59:05Speaker 1: I'm listening to it with no money invested as a kid.
- 59:08Speaker 1: And I can pick whatever. i like what i don't
- 59:11Speaker 1: like and i don't have to like deep dive into
- 59:13Speaker 1: it i don't have to throw a ton of money
- 59:15Speaker 1: into it right you can kind of create your own
- 59:18Speaker 1: thing that you're into so again and in the end
- 59:21Speaker 1: it's better it makes more of a well-rounded person but
- 59:25Speaker 1: right it's just so different from how we grew up Yeah.
- 59:28Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, yeah. So, yeah, there are
- 59:32Speaker 4: probably some things on my playlist that are more recent
- 59:36Speaker 4: now than for a while before I had a Spotify account,
- 59:39Speaker 4: you know? But my kids, I mean, they... Well, you're
- 59:45Speaker 4: talking about influences. They were playing something, listening to something
- 59:50Speaker 4: the other day, and I go like, are you listening
- 59:53Speaker 4: to REO Speedwagon?
- 59:54Speaker 1: Yeah. You were dorks if it was the 70s. What
- 59:59Speaker 1: the hell?
- 59:59Speaker 4: And she's like, no. And I'm like, no, this is
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: like this band. And I go like, is this new?
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: And she's like, yeah. And I go like, listen to
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: this song. And so I played I Can't Fight This
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: Feeling Anymore. A classic. A classic. And I was going like,
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: you see what I mean?
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: And she's like, yeah.
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: And I'm going like, weird. And she's like, uh-huh.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: See, I'm the unusual one, especially for the old man
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: that I am, because I do still... I'm definitely not
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: in the loop as far as knowing all of the stuff,
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: because there's way too much stuff out there now as well,
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: much like the movie industry. Everybody just puts out an album.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: Not even an album. Shit. You don't even do albums anymore.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: Nobody even releases albums anymore. You just do a song,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: put it out. Everything's a single. Everything just gets dropped
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: on the internet. But I will be like... I'm the
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: one old man that's also... sitting at a party talking
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: to my teenage niece about Olivia Rodrigo. So I'm dork
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: enough to like, there's still some current things that I'm
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: totally into. And I think she's a great songwriter and like,
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: I'm impressed with her as a performer. And like, I still,
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: I'm not so old man set in my ways that
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: I don't like new things. I think I like a
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: lot more than most people of my old age era.
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: But yeah, I still feel like there's so much new
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: stuff out there that you can't even scratch the surface now. Like,
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: even kids that are immersed in it, there's probably tons
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: of stuff they're missing because there's just so much out
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: there now. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: So, I mean, these all sound like positive things.
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: I think so. So, once again, this movie has brought
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: you joy, is what I'm saying.
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: Yes, again, basically, this sounds like a life-changing movie that
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: I'm about to watch here.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: This amazing body-swapping movie filled with lots of dumb comedic moments. Yep.
- 1:01:50Speaker 4: Yeah, and that is an interesting sub-genre. Now, I think...
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: I really think the baby and the dog switching places
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: is probably a step too far.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: Well, see, I think even they realize that because... Within
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: a few minutes, they're like behind the scenes. They're like, oh,
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: except babies are pretty boring. So let's get them out
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: of there. So like almost immediately and almost for the
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: rest of the movie, the dog and baby are totally
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: sidelined so that we can focus on these other four
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: characters that actually are like living lives and interesting. So
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: they get some random weirdo neighbor to babysit and or
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: dog sit at the same time. He doesn't know what happened,
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: but he's seeing these things and somehow is like, confused
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: by it but not like freaking the hell out and
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: running away.
- 1:02:40Speaker 6: He's just watching well yeah the dog you know like
- 1:02:43Speaker 6: he keeps sometimes they'll do it behind his back like
- 1:02:46Speaker 6: he's turned around and the dog the kids running around
- 1:02:49Speaker 6: a really bad cg kid running on all fours behind
- 1:02:52Speaker 6: him and then they'll turn around and the baby's just
- 1:02:54Speaker 6: sitting there so it's.
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: Like sometimes he's out of the loop other times the
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: dog's asking him to put a diaper on him and
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: he's like sort of okay with it.
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: Well that is a phenomenon in movies that people go
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: with situations that in real life would stop people cold,
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: you know? Yeah.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: You should be screaming, running from the house, but instead
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: you're like, you want me to put this on you? Okay.
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: And then you put a diaper on a puppy and like, yeah,
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: that's fine.
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: Like, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I, I don't know, Brian,
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: the more you describe it, you keep, I keep swinging
- 1:03:30Speaker 4: the pendulum of like, uh maybe this will be fun
- 1:03:34Speaker 4: to watch or maybe this would be infuriating and that's pretty.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: Much how it operates too got it as i watched
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: it every moment i'm like well maybe this is redeemed
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: nope nope another pratfall here we go and then i
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: realized why like i got through this entire movie and
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: i'm like this thing is all over the place and
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: it's kind of a mess but it's trying real hard
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: over here and it's trying to do this thing and
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: Who the hell put this together? And at the end,
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: the credit comes up. Directed by Mick G.
- 1:04:03Speaker 4: What?
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: Mick G. Mick G?
- 1:04:07Speaker 4: Oh, my God.
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: I was like, oh, God. Every time I forget about him,
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: then he makes something else. I keep thinking we're out
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: and he pulls us back in with body swapping families.
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: Wait a minute. Does it have the style of like,
- 1:04:20Speaker 4: you know, the babysitter movie? Is it like that kind
- 1:04:23Speaker 4: of thing?
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: I was like, cause I was thinking that's the last
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: one I remember seeing of his were both of those
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: babysitter movies, which are pretty fun. Like those as again,
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: they're not perfect, but they're a little hammy, but at
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: the same time they're fun. Yeah. So again, I feel
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: like this is way more, uh, traditional slapsticky bullshit that's
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: to me like that's why I didn't immediately recognize like
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: who the hell it is tons of needle drops which
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: is also one of his things yeah of super recognizable
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: popular songs like he never digs out a forgotten relic
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: he's always just like yeah here's the 10 songs everybody
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: already knows and.
- 1:04:59Speaker 4: I'm gonna put them in.
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: My thing I hate that so yeah there's definitely a
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: whole lot of Christmas needle drops that you weren't necessarily
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: missing but there they are anyway so But yeah, to me,
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: it's not near as entertaining or interesting as what the
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: babysitter was doing. So, or the second baby, even the
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: second one was pretty fun. I kind of better because
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: it brought in a new cast member that I like
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: a lot more. So yeah. Yeah.
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: I haven't seen the second one yet, but it's fun. Yeah.
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: Now what is, what, um, does it have though? Like his,
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: you know, the visual panache he brings to most of
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: his projects, you know, like, uh, the energetic camera work
- 1:05:39Speaker 4: and the, fourth wall kind of breaking.
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: I feel like, again, I feel like this seems a
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: lot more traditional. That's why I said I didn't recognize
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: it as one of his through the whole rest of
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: what I was watching, so.
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: You would expect something a little different from him, but
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: it feels like it's super traditional, random comedy that comes
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: on cable that you're like, eh, whatever. And that's kind
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: of how this plays out. Again, I feel like the
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: only thing that elevates it is the performances. Everybody's committed
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: and does a good job as far as the actors,
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: but production-wise, it just feels like a random made-for-cable streaming
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: service kind of movie.
- 1:06:23Speaker 4: So that's the thing about the Netflix streaming movies is
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: they've got so much resource and power and money to
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: throw at something, but the movies do come off very
- 1:06:35Speaker 4: try hard, you know, very, very, that we are going
- 1:06:39Speaker 4: to entertain you to death with this movie. All right.
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: And TV, which is what it's funny. Like looking, I
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: was trying to be like, what else did he do?
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: But he's done so much TV work. Then I'm like,
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: maybe this is just more of his, maybe the movies
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: are his weird offshoots because he's done way more TV
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: than feature films. So maybe this is just him falling
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: back on his TV roots here.
- 1:07:02Speaker 4: It's real weird. It's real weird because, okay, so I'm
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: about to say something that, uh, would actually get me
- 1:07:10Speaker 4: kicked out of many film circles, but I was crapping
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: on this movie. And then you said directed by Mick G.
- 1:07:19Speaker 4: And my first thought was I'm in. and so that
- 1:07:24Speaker 4: makes me probably not qualified to talk about movies.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: Maybe possibly he also i forgot he did rim of
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: the world which i think was another streak to netflix
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: thing that was the post-apocalyptic kids trying to save the
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: world i think from aliens but again the sad part
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: is i don't even remember what it was.
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: From i think it was aliens I can't guarantee.
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: I watched it. It's only like 2019 and yet by
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: now I can't even tell.
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: You what the hell it was about. That was 700
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: movies ago.
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: That says a lot about the film, I feel like.
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: Probably so. No, I think McG when he's cooking on
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: all cylinders makes good energetic movies, you know? Now he.
- 1:08:17Speaker 4: He's done it before. Yeah.
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: Also, it's very to just like sometimes falls right into
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: here's some random crap on TV. Right, right. He can
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: just fall back and coast through projects.
- 1:08:32Speaker 4: This might be one. I think it I think it was.
- 1:08:36Speaker 4: It sounds like it sounds like because I mean, if
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: he if he brought that a game, I mean, I
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: think even if even with a baby and a dog's body,
- 1:08:43Speaker 4: I mean, maybe I could. uh, get behind it, but it, it,
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: it sounds like a paycheck and, uh, uh, and, and yeah,
- 1:08:54Speaker 4: you know, I mean, he, he, I'm not going to defend,
- 1:08:57Speaker 4: I mean, he basically showed how easy it was. was
- 1:09:00Speaker 4: to make a terrible terminator movie i mean and and
- 1:09:03Speaker 4: uh and like how how no amount of effort can
- 1:09:07Speaker 4: make a good terminator movie uh and christian bale whoever
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: you got in it you know yeah you're.
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: Pulling in big names but yet it still doesn't salvage
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: it if you're just yeah Boning it in.
- 1:09:20Speaker 4: The one thing I got out of Terminator Salvation was
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: Anton Yelchin's Kyle Reese impersonation. I was like, hey, that
- 1:09:31Speaker 4: kid's got... He nailed Kyle Reese, man. He's a good impersonation.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: I love Anton. I miss him. I wish he was
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: still making crap. He was always fun. I love that kid.
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: Yeah, he was cool, man.
- 1:09:44Speaker 3: He was cool.
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: Okay, so we sidetracked ourselves from what led us to
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: this movie.
- 1:09:49Speaker 4: Okay. And here's the thing.
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: All the things I've said about it, all these different
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: things that have annoyed you. Yeah. Has any of them
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: sounded like Christmas to you?
- 1:09:59Speaker 4: Like Christmas? Christmas.
- 1:10:02Speaker 9: No.
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: Because this is also a Christmas movie.
- 1:10:05Speaker 4: Oh my God.
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: What the hell?
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: So it feels so tacked on. Like so much so
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: I started thinking, did they just add that in after
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: the fact? But then I went back and I was
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: like paying attention. I was like, no, there's all these
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: Christmas decorations everywhere. And like, again, all the music that
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: comes in, like 90% of it is Christmas song. So
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: it's like, it really, by the end is trying to
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: play the Christmas movie card. But I was like, that
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: seems like a different genre. Like why would you take
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: your already well-established body swapping genre and try to cram
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: it into Christmas? Or vice versa. I was like, it just,
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: it feels so tacked on.
- 1:10:47Speaker 4: So, it's like, had it been, had they worked it
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: in where, like, there was a gift swap, you know? And, like,
- 1:10:55Speaker 4: whoever you gave that gift to, you ended up switching
- 1:10:57Speaker 4: personalities with. Then it would be- Baked into the plot,
- 1:11:01Speaker 4: it would make sense. Baked into the plot, right?
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: Yeah, we don't have that at all.
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: Because that's the other thing. With all of these body-switching movies,
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: there always has to be a dumb gimmick that does it. Like,
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: you can't just... I guess the most without a gimmick is, like,
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: our original Freaky Friday run. Right. They're always just, like,
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: at the same moment, they say a thing, and then
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: they swap. Right. And that's it. And they don't question
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: it any more than that. But then there's other ones
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: that are like, is it one of them? There's like
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: a magic bowl and your soul goes into a bowl
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: and the magic bowl gets spilt. And then the soul
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: goes into another person. Like, Oh, magic metal bowl.
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: You know, there's gotta be a magic metal bowl.
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: Okay. So this, yeah. Each one has to pick what's
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: our weird magical thing that makes this happen. Do I
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: have a Zoltar machine that I can talk to? You know,
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: you gotta have a, whatever it is that does it.
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: So this one, The kid is super smart, the boy,
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: and he's into astronomy. So they go to this once-in-a-lifetime
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: lining up of the planets, and that may be what
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: does it. Maybe. Possibly. There's a flash of light and
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: wind blows, and suddenly things are switched. I don't know. Whatever.
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: Because then by the end, they also play it off
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: like maybe it's not that. Like maybe there's a Santa
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: Claus element that was there the whole time. And the
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: planet thing wasn't even what did it. It was our
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: magic Santa Claus character that's like, you guys just needed
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: to find yourselves and become better as a family all along.
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: And it's the magic of Christmas that made that happen. What?
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: I hope you're happy now.
- 1:12:42Speaker 4: So the ancient druid ritual was just a smokescreen to...
- 1:12:47Speaker 4: Say like, oh no, it's actually this.
- 1:12:51Speaker 4: It's actually this religion.
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: In actuality, you just need to appreciate your family a
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: little more. And then maybe that's the magic. And then
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: it'll switch all back when you come to terms with
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: the fact that your family's pretty awesome.
- 1:13:04Speaker 4: Got it. So Santa Claus... So Santa Claus and the
- 1:13:10Speaker 4: aligning of planets... Is what led us to this family swapping.
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: So.
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: So Santa Claus is aware of like ancient dark arts
- 1:13:21Speaker 4: and is maybe in league with Cthulhu. And then like,
- 1:13:25Speaker 4: so Cthulhu's purpose now is to bring families closer together. Yeah.
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: You've already gone way more interesting than McG. So I
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: think we're handing the McG reins to you from here
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: on out. All McG movies have to go through you.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: All right. All right. It just seems that seems to
- 1:13:45Speaker 4: be the obvious thing because we're dealing with like ancient magic.
- 1:13:48Speaker 4: We're dealing with people with magical powers and and, you know,
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: knowledge that has been forgotten to time.
- 1:14:00Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:14:01Speaker 4: So, I don't know, dude. I don't know. This sounds
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: like a really good movie.
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: I come back to my.
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: Hiding inside a really terrible movie.
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: My entry point and my takeaway was the same. Emma
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: Myers is pretty awesome.
- 1:14:19Speaker 4: Yeah, sure.
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: Other than that, I'm just like, ah. I mean, Jennifer Garner,
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: God love her. She's trying.
- 1:14:24Speaker 4: Yeah, man.
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: She kind of commits. She delivers a pretty good performance.
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: But I'm just like, it is just so... Let's work
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: in a spit take.
- 1:14:33Speaker 4: Ready?
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: Go. Yeah. It is so traditional comedy nonsense. Like it's just.
- 1:14:40Speaker 4: Yeah. These movies get trapped inside the genres that they're in. Sometimes,
- 1:14:43Speaker 4: sometimes there's a good movie there, but they've got, they
- 1:14:46Speaker 4: got to play by the rules of the genre.
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: You definitely could take those touching moments and like rework
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: them into something a little more interesting and clever and
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: then have a good movie, but it falls back on
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: slapstick bullshit.
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: So yeah, yeah, sure.
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: Sure.
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: And, you know, there is a time where you want
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: to be challenged as a viewer, and there is a
- 1:15:06Speaker 4: time where you just want to watch some random thing
- 1:15:09Speaker 4: on Tubi and not be challenged. And I was like, hey,
- 1:15:13Speaker 4: I've got a grocery list of things that I need
- 1:15:16Speaker 4: to see in this movie so I can get through
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: another day.
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: And if that's the case, they deliver in this movie.
- 1:15:21Speaker 4: They deliver.
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: They hit that grocery list hard.
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah. It's like the algorithm knew that. how to
- 1:15:28Speaker 4: make this movie.
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: And that's, I mean, because it's made for Netflix, like
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: it literally feels like they took all the most popular
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: searches and views on combined to the comedies together. And like, okay,
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: what's the top 20 things that are in all these movies,
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: the collective things that are in all these movies, we're
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: going to take all those and make sure they're in
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: this movie. McGee, get on it. And then it, this
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: is it. Like, this is the amalgam of what comes
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: together when you, take a bunch of modern dumb comedies
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: and like, here's what people like.
- 1:15:59Speaker 3: Sure.
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:16:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:16:04Speaker 4: It's not good. It's not good. That makes that now
- 1:16:07Speaker 4: I'm depressed. Now I'm depressed about thinking about the current
- 1:16:09Speaker 4: state of, no, no, we told you it made you happy.
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: As long as we told you it made it, that's
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: all that matters.
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: This, this discussion has been an emotional rollercoaster.
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: That's what we do.
- 1:16:21Speaker 4: It's so, so terrible. So terrible. Does this, um, But this...
- 1:16:29Speaker 4: It makes you long for films that were made by
- 1:16:34Speaker 4: people who didn't know better. And I've been... In our
- 1:16:42Speaker 4: kind of pre-discussion, I've been diving into these Tubi, or
- 1:16:51Speaker 4: at least free streaming service selections. And they seem to
- 1:16:54Speaker 4: have everything on the planet. And a lot of what
- 1:16:58Speaker 4: I'm finding are things from the 80s that are, you know,
- 1:17:04Speaker 4: very low budget, but very made by people. Made by people, not,
- 1:17:13Speaker 4: you know, I'm not trying to say made by people,
- 1:17:14Speaker 4: not committees. I'm just saying there was no market research.
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: There's definitely not an algorithm at work.
- 1:17:20Speaker 4: There is no algorithm here. It's almost like uh, community theater, uh, movies.
- 1:17:27Speaker 4: And I, I love these things more so because as
- 1:17:33Speaker 4: they say, they just don't make them like that anymore. Uh,
- 1:17:36Speaker 4: because yeah, uh, this, the craft work has gotten so
- 1:17:39Speaker 4: good on even low budget things that, you know, they
- 1:17:41Speaker 4: don't make them like that anymore because, you know, a
- 1:17:44Speaker 4: foam rock, you know, or, I don't know what I was,
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: you know, just, these are just terrible, uh, You know,
- 1:17:53Speaker 4: exploitation movies from the late 80s, you know, 80s, late 80s,
- 1:17:57Speaker 4: you know, and that they used to show on like
- 1:17:58Speaker 4: USA Up all night. And they're all on these free services.
- 1:18:03Speaker 4: And you watch them and you go like, this is
- 1:18:05Speaker 4: so charming. Because I remember they were kind of like
- 1:18:09Speaker 4: smutty back in the day. But now they're just kind
- 1:18:11Speaker 4: of like lighthearted. Nobody's taking anything seriously. Those robots are
- 1:18:16Speaker 4: obviously papier-mâché. But nobody cares. I mean, this is actually... uh,
- 1:18:23Speaker 4: you know, objectively a bad movie, but because it's such a, uh,
- 1:18:28Speaker 4: a handmade piece of theater, basically, it's basically, I guess
- 1:18:33Speaker 4: I'm talking about slave girls from beyond infinity. All right.
- 1:18:36Speaker 4: So I'm just going to.
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: Say, you're starting to get specific.
- 1:18:39Speaker 4: We might as well name it.
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:18:41Speaker 4: Slave girls from beyond infinity. All right. So, you know,
- 1:18:43Speaker 4: you're sitting there just watching it going like, yeah, I
- 1:18:46Speaker 4: have i am like a skeezy old man watching this
- 1:18:50Speaker 4: stupid movie all right but.
- 1:18:51Speaker 9: Uh anyway not really as you go on because that's
- 1:18:55Speaker 9: that's the thing it's like you you we were throwing
- 1:18:57Speaker 9: out like do we even pick a topic and the
- 1:18:59Speaker 9: only thing you mentioned a couple of movies and one
- 1:19:02Speaker 9: of which was slave girls from beyond infinity.
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: And i was like Okay. I was like, I'm not
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: even going to comment to you anymore. I'll just go
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: ahead and we'll wait till we get to the episode.
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: But what's funny is I have this movie on VHS. Oh, okay.
- 1:19:15Speaker 4: Okay, cool.
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: And I bought it for the title and the cover art.
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: I went in completely sight unseen here. Here I'm dating myself.
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure I just make up these memories sometimes,
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: but I'm pretty sure I bought this at Camelot. Okay. Yeah, man.
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: Camelot music had a, as they got bigger as a company,
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: had a ton of movies. And I'm pretty sure after
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: a while, they also, because it wasn't their main business,
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: they would just mark them down and clear that stuff
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: out as they got, you know, here's a whole bunch
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: of VHS tapes or a ton of my laser discs
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: came from that because they just be like, get this
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: out of here. $ 1. 99. Good enough. Let's go. Go, go, go.
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: I saw this on the shelf and went slave girls
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: from beyond infinity. That sounds awesome. And then you pick
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: up the box and the box art is amazing. Incredible.
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: And I was just like, obviously I need this movie.
- 1:20:05Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: So I watched it back in the day on that
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: VHS tape. And the thing is back then I was like, eh,
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: I didn't think it was that great a movie. Like
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: I just threw it on the shelf and it's still
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: sitting there now. It's been there ever since.
- 1:20:18Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: I haven't revisited it until you mentioned it. And I
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: just went back and rewatched it the last day.
- 1:20:24Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: So we now can address it as the old men
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: that we are.
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: Right. But that was my entry point is like, I
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: owned this and specifically bought it based on title and
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: poster art.
- 1:20:35Speaker 4: Right. And there is nothing there's nothing wrong with that movie.
- 1:20:39Speaker 4: All right. That movie is actually I thought I loved it.
- 1:20:43Speaker 4: I think had I seen it in 1988 or something
- 1:20:46Speaker 4: like that, I would be like, oh, it's not very good.
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: That was where I landed at the time.
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: Whatever. But again, I'm also in the middle of the
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: 80s watching the most epic 80s movies ever that I
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: still hold as classics. So, you know, when I just
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: finished watching the thing, and then I watched Slave Girls
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: from Beyond Infinity, I'm like, wow, man, this isn't very good.
- 1:21:05Speaker 4: This is barely a movie.
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: Compared to some of the crap streaming now, I'm like,
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: you know, Slave Girls from Beyond Infinity, it's got its
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: good points.
- 1:21:13Speaker 4: You know what? I like how it just looks like
- 1:21:17Speaker 4: three sets. And, you know, two bikinis and, like, two
- 1:21:22Speaker 4: papier-mâché robots and some really terrible acting. And just, like,
- 1:21:29Speaker 4: I was just going, like, man, this is... I didn't
- 1:21:33Speaker 4: realize this was going to feel so throwback. And, you know,
- 1:21:36Speaker 4: this was kind of like a Skinemex kind of thing
- 1:21:38Speaker 4: where you, like, you hope nobody catches you watching it,
- 1:21:41Speaker 4: you know? But I'm going, like, compared to the stuff
- 1:21:45Speaker 4: that people... have access to now. This is like a
- 1:21:49Speaker 4: sports illustrated swimsuit.
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: That's what I was watching this. Like, I remember this
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: being like, Ooh, do I even let people know I.
- 1:21:57Speaker 4: Have this on my shelf?
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: It's so scandalous. Exactly. This movie. And then I'm watching
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: it now. I'm going, do you know how much, like
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: not just nudity, but full on hardcore pornography is, is
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: at anyone's disposal right. kid or adult right right moment
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: of their lives as they're carrying the supercomputer in their
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: pocket all day.
- 1:22:18Speaker 4: Yeah exactly whatever horrible.
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: Thing they want yeah but when i go back and
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: watch this like it is almost refreshing i was it
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: is you know what i saw a couple of nipples.
- 1:22:29Speaker 4: Right And that was it.
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: Like that's, you don't, they're in their underwear most of
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: the movie. But other than that, like there's barely even
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: any actual nudity. There's a couple of moments of like, oh,
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: she took it up, up. And then it goes away immediately.
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: And I was like, you know, the sad thing is
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: in the 80s, that was, it yeah like you were
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: so amazed that you got to see that girl take
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: her top off like this was one of my favorite
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: movies for the rest of my life absolutely some girl
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: took her top off for 12 seconds and i changed.
- 1:22:56Speaker 4: My life right right five seconds of side boob like
- 1:23:00Speaker 4: like redirected by the course of my existence right right
- 1:23:03Speaker 4: yeah i was like.
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: But now like that shouldn't even phase.
- 1:23:07Speaker 4: This any kid out there i was.
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: Like you've seen so much stuff like this shouldn't even
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: register as being not only nudity but even in the
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: naughty category right silly that you just be like what
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: is this this is dumb and they turn it off
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: probably but.
- 1:23:22Speaker 4: Yeah yeah this is boring this is for me revisiting
- 1:23:26Speaker 4: it it's the whole new world yeah yeah always going
- 1:23:29Speaker 4: like man this is really not that smutty the girls
- 1:23:32Speaker 4: are obviously in on the joke everybody's kind of in
- 1:23:35Speaker 4: on the joke And, you know, they take their tops
- 1:23:39Speaker 4: off like once, but it's like, it's not like super,
- 1:23:43Speaker 4: it's not super exploitive.
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: There's one blatant version. And then the other two are
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: kind of in the middle of doing something and they're
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: naked for a second.
- 1:23:50Speaker 4: And that's pretty much it.
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: The rest of the time they're wearing underwear and, you know,
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: scantily clad bikini t-shirts. stuff yeah raquel welch yeah dinosaurs
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: gear you know they're wearing a rabbit skin bikini and
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: right good.
- 1:24:05Speaker 4: Enough right right right and so and i was going
- 1:24:09Speaker 4: like yeah well this is really this is what they
- 1:24:11Speaker 4: call i guess sex positive now you know it's just
- 1:24:14Speaker 4: kind of like it's not like degrading it's just kind
- 1:24:16Speaker 4: of fun and it's just like you know i mean
- 1:24:19Speaker 4: and if you're like uh you know 14 years old
- 1:24:23Speaker 4: it's fantastic, you know?
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: And the girl is the hero. She's the one that
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: ends up kicking everybody's ass. That's right. He's the one
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: that decides, oh, this guy's kind of a loser, but
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: I think I want to get laid.
- 1:24:37Speaker 4: Yeah, pretty much.
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: I mean, there is some attempted rape by the villain,
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: but he's the villain.
- 1:24:43Speaker 4: He's the villain.
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: I guess you let that slide because of that. But
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: other than that, the only time anybody has sex, it's
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: of her choice. Right. Right.
- 1:24:52Speaker 4: So I thought this was a very empowering movie. I
- 1:24:56Speaker 4: thought this was like a fun kind of light kind
- 1:24:58Speaker 4: of thing that I go like, you know, this was
- 1:25:00Speaker 4: seen as like evil and everything. But I guess, you know,
- 1:25:04Speaker 4: it was just so more puritanical at the time. And,
- 1:25:08Speaker 4: you know, like I'm sure like our, you know, our
- 1:25:11Speaker 4: dads like had like, you know, whatever, you know, which
- 1:25:14Speaker 4: was even probably funny. you know, tamer, you know, uh, uh,
- 1:25:19Speaker 4: you know, jet magazine. It was just like a girl
- 1:25:21Speaker 4: sipping a martini and a bathing suit, you know, uh, whatever. And, uh,
- 1:25:27Speaker 4: you know, or like, what is it like, uh, uh, nudie, uh,
- 1:25:31Speaker 4: nudie documentaries, you know, where it's just like, uh, nudist colonies.
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:25:36Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:25:37Speaker 4: It's just like nudist colonies, you know, and stuff and whatever.
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: But it's also shot on a super rate camera from
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: across the street. street. From across the street! That's how
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: they used to do it. And even then, they were like,
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: oh my gosh, they're naked! They would get excited.
- 1:25:49Speaker 4: Yeah, they're four miles away.
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: It's a different world, but... Right, right.
- 1:25:53Speaker 4: Or they put it in, like, a bucolic, you know,
- 1:25:56Speaker 4: kind of like a garden-type thing, and they shoot it
- 1:25:58Speaker 4: from behind a tree, and, you know, and so it's, like, tasteful.
- 1:26:02Speaker 4: I was going, like, this is compared to what you
- 1:26:05Speaker 4: get nowadays. This is, like, very tastefully made smut, you know?
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: And to put it in perspective of how evil this
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: type of stuff was I'm assuming maybe you know this
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: but I didn't know it until I looked up after
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: the fact this film specifically by name was brought up
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: on the floor of the US Senate Are you joking?
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: Senator Jesse Helms in 1992 referenced this as like people,
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: old guys sitting around flipping through the cable channels and
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: they come across a movie like this, which he in
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: quotes is referring to as indecent.
- 1:26:45Speaker 8: Wow.
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: And he wanted to put into play like a, a,
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: a law of sorts that like would stop this sort
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: of stuff from coming into your homes. And you had
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: to like sign a waiver more or less to be
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: able to have access to this type of indecent material
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: coming into your home. This movie. I can't. A couple
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: of nipples.
- 1:27:07Speaker 4: I'm shocked.
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: Indecent. I am shocked. By the US Senate standards.
- 1:27:12Speaker 4: I can't understand things of such.
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying.
- 1:27:16Speaker 4: Think about the.
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: World of 1992 where this was the worst thing they
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: could come up with of indecent material to discuss in
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: the U.S. Senate.
- 1:27:26Speaker 4: Oh, my God. Taxpayer money at work to limit access
- 1:27:30Speaker 4: to slave girls from beyond infinity.
- 1:27:32Speaker 8: Yep.
- 1:27:32Speaker 4: Think about that for a minute. I'm shocked. I just
- 1:27:37Speaker 4: don't even know what to say. I don't even know
- 1:27:39Speaker 4: what to say. I did not know what a political
- 1:27:43Speaker 4: bombshell this movie was.
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: I didn't until today, but lucky I went down that road.
- 1:27:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: Indecent is how it was described.
- 1:27:55Speaker 4: Wow, dude.
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: Wow. Well, I mean.
- 1:28:00Speaker 4: So as as as absolutely soul crushing, misogynistic filth that
- 1:28:07Speaker 4: it is, it also has just a. feeling uh that
- 1:28:14Speaker 4: they don't have in movies anymore these direct to netflix
- 1:28:17Speaker 4: movies are so market driven calculated there was a market
- 1:28:22Speaker 4: there for the slave girls beyond infinity they go like
- 1:28:25Speaker 4: pretty girls and robots i was that was their market
- 1:28:28Speaker 4: reason i.
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: Mean they go like in already yeah.
- 1:28:31Speaker 4: I mean pretty girls and robots i mean there we
- 1:28:32Speaker 4: go that's it that's it and we'll work.
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: In some dinosaurs and monsters like i don't need anything
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: else Jeez.
- 1:28:39Speaker 4: We're so we're so that's all the market research we need.
- 1:28:42Speaker 4: I mean, it just at a gut level, you know,
- 1:28:44Speaker 4: that there's going to be an audience for that. And then,
- 1:28:47Speaker 4: and then with the meager resources, the meager talent and
- 1:28:52Speaker 4: the meager forethought, they pulled something together and it's all,
- 1:28:57Speaker 4: you know, very kind of Ed Wood, and it's kind of,
- 1:29:00Speaker 4: you know, very rickety sets. But there is that kind of, man.
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: They.
- 1:29:09Speaker 4: Knew sort of, there was just something there. There's something
- 1:29:12Speaker 4: there about a small group of people that would just
- 1:29:17Speaker 4: shake and bacon up a movie, you know? Which you
- 1:29:22Speaker 4: don't see in these extravagances, you know? You know, I mean,
- 1:29:25Speaker 4: things are fine, but I guess it's just, they're not
- 1:29:30Speaker 4: like that anymore. And I like the community. I like
- 1:29:34Speaker 4: the acting that is acting, and it's not realistic. Well,
- 1:29:41Speaker 4: you know, you guys watched the Silent Night, Deadly Night 2.
- 1:29:44Speaker 4: Y'all got into that pretty deep.
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: Oh, we did.
- 1:29:46Speaker 4: And that was, you know, but it had that kind
- 1:29:51Speaker 4: of feeling of, it felt like for me, like some
- 1:29:59Speaker 4: small town, the community theater director really liked the first one,
- 1:30:03Speaker 4: and he just kind of put together, he's like, I'm
- 1:30:06Speaker 4: going to write a sequel to Silent Night, Deadly Night,
- 1:30:10Speaker 4: and we're going to put it on for the Christmas patches.
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: Well, I feel like that guy was a much worse
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: actor than what we get.
- 1:30:20Speaker 4: What we get usually in community theater.
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: What we get in this movie. Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 1:30:24Speaker 4: At least here. Oh, yeah, yeah, that's true.
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: That's true. I think what's funny, and I think what
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: you said is them being in on the joke, because
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: it's almost like the entire script is written with that
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: tongue-in-cheek nonsense. Everything is said so overly proper and overly
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: explained in a way that even normal people don't talk.
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: Let alone girls running around in their rabbit-skin bikinis. You
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: would not expect to talk like this. But it's so.
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: I'm picking up something.
- 1:31:00Speaker 4: Not far from here.
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: A beacon.
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: Out here?
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: Let's check it out. It's coming from.
- 1:31:04Speaker 9: That small planetoid.
- 1:31:06Speaker 3: You know, there's something odd about this.
- 1:31:08Speaker 4: That signal isn't just a safe channel beacon. That beam
- 1:31:11Speaker 4: is transmitting astronavigational landing coordinates. We'd be lucky to find
- 1:31:15Speaker 4: a rock out here big enough to set down on.
- 1:31:17Speaker 4: And you're questioning an invitation to a habitable world with
- 1:31:20Speaker 4: a landing strip? Unlock the beam of the directional grid
- 1:31:23Speaker 4: into the hyperdrive system.
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: Yeah, the way that they speak is so... just loaded
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: with extra words and descriptive ways of putting things.
- 1:31:33Speaker 4: That I'm just like, that's awesome.
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: Is this for real? And then like, as it went on,
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: they all did it. And I was just like, this
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: is the whole screenplay. Like they literally were like, this
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: is the joke is like, everybody's going to talk like this,
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: even though nobody talks like this. So I think the
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: fact that those girls like delivered while still doing their
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: bikini shots is like.
- 1:31:54Speaker 4: Pretty impressive actually.
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:31:56Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, there's just something there. And it's only 72
- 1:32:00Speaker 4: minutes long. That's a bonus. Perfect time for a movie.
- 1:32:06Speaker 4: But there's a lot of those movies on these services.
- 1:32:11Speaker 4: And it's really nice to have such easy access to them.
- 1:32:16Speaker 4: Because it really is like counter-programming to the glossy stuff
- 1:32:20Speaker 4: that is on the mainstreamers. And I watch that stuff.
- 1:32:24Speaker 4: I mean, it's fine, but sometimes you just want to
- 1:32:26Speaker 4: see something, I don't know, that's just not as competent,
- 1:32:30Speaker 4: you know? And has something that those Netflix shows can't have,
- 1:32:35Speaker 4: you know?
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: And uh something where things just don't match up sometimes
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: yeah like she's flying a ship and she's wearing a
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: gold michael jackson glove yeah and then the next shot
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: it's just gone it's just gone and it never returns
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: and they never mentioned why it was there or what
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: she was doing with it on it was just there
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: for a minute and then it's gone yep or we
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: fast forward to the the much discussed taking off of
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: the top Where she takes her top off, goes walked
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: out in the ocean, comes back. It's magically on again.
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: It's like, hey, can you bring me my towel? Cut
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: back to the robots fighting.
- 1:33:12Speaker 4: Cut back to her.
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: Tops off again. She's like, never mind on the towel.
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: I was like, are you just constantly taking it on
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: and off in the cutaway scene?
- 1:33:19Speaker 4: What's going on here? You don't reshoot that.
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: You're just like, eh. She took it back off. Who's
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: going to question that? Obviously, it's good enough. She ended
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: up with it off. Right. You all win. It's good.
- 1:33:33Speaker 4: It's fine. It's fine. And so the, the, yeah, exactly.
- 1:33:38Speaker 4: That's exactly it, Brian, that kind of stuff. You just
- 1:33:41Speaker 4: don't get it anymore. You know, bad filmmaking is harder
- 1:33:44Speaker 4: and harder to come by, uh, with these services, but
- 1:33:49Speaker 4: I mean, I don't know that that's true, but that
- 1:33:51Speaker 4: type of bad, that type of bad film, there's.
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: Definitely some new bad filmmaking, but that's a different story.
- 1:33:57Speaker 4: Yeah, that's true. That's true. But yeah, they, they, they
- 1:34:01Speaker 4: kind of have a, a bar on these, you know,
- 1:34:04Speaker 4: big services where, you know, they're, they're putting their name
- 1:34:08Speaker 4: on it. So they're going to like, it's going to
- 1:34:09Speaker 4: be at least, you know, Hallmark channel quality. Um, that
- 1:34:14Speaker 4: sets the bar pretty high.
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 1:34:18Speaker 4: It was pretty much, pretty much that's criterion and the, um,
- 1:34:25Speaker 4: but yeah, these, these are, uh, They're, they're, they're interesting movies,
- 1:34:28Speaker 4: you know, like all these barbaric sword and sandal movies
- 1:34:31Speaker 4: from the time period. The best are sword and sandal movies,
- 1:34:36Speaker 4: but they said it in the post apocalypse.
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: That's, that's. We're delving in. That was kind of our
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: last one that I don't think you've even gotten to yet,
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: but yeah, we're, um, we're doing that only. It's even
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: more insane because it's in Italy.
- 1:34:51Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:34:51Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: It's actually shot in Italy, but it's post-apocalyptic. At the time,
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: the first movie was post-apocalyptic The Bronx.
- 1:34:59Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: In Italy. And then we just did the sequel to
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: that one, which is post-apocalyptic wherever now, because it's gone
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: into the future and like, there's nothing left but desert essentially. Yeah.
- 1:35:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: I love them. Those are always amazing.
- 1:35:14Speaker 4: Yeah. I haven't seen, but yeah, I haven't seen the
- 1:35:16Speaker 4: second one yet. So I haven't, I saved the episode
- 1:35:19Speaker 4: until I seen it, but.
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll, we'll pin it down for you because it
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: has two titles. Of course, God forbid they pick one.
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: So got it.
- 1:35:26Speaker 9: Right.
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: For real, for the U S titles, different from the
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: Italian or wherever else they released it. So, but yeah,
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: those are, those are insane in an entirely different way.
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: And again, I think it's, it's the almost like complete
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: detachedness of it from those.
- 1:35:43Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: Like as you're watching it, like, So this, this guy
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: in the future, not to jump ahead on an episode
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: you hadn't seen yet, but this guy in the future
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: has a piece of clothing that is made of clear plastic. Yeah.
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: Clear plastic bubbles. So they're giant bubbles over his manly
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: man chest. And then these two big round bubbles above
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: each shoulder, like shoulder pads that are sticking up and
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: flopping around big plastic pieces. And I'm like, they, they,
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: put it together. Like they built this physical thing for
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: him to stick on himself and walk around and deliver
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: lines in. And I'm like, I don't feel like they
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: would do that now. Like anybody now would just look
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: at this clear piece of plastic on this shirtless dude
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: and be like, what are you doing?
- 1:36:32Speaker 4: We can't put this in a movie. This is not the,
- 1:36:35Speaker 4: you are not at the level to be working on
- 1:36:38Speaker 4: professional films.
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: I feel like that wouldn't fly now. Like it's just
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: too ridiculous.
- 1:36:44Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: That like now it would have to be like a
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: super art house project.
- 1:36:47Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: There'd be like a reason behind it. Right. They would come,
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: they would come up with weird stuff, but it would
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: be for a specific pretentious reason. Right. Not just, I
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: thought it'd be cool if that dude had his shirt off,
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: but like there's some plastic bubbles sticking up on, cause
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: it's the future. And in the future, plastic bubbles.
- 1:37:04Speaker 10: Duh.
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: I mean, of course.
- 1:37:06Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: So that was all of the reason. What's the future?
- 1:37:10Speaker 4: Plastics. Plastics.
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: So yeah, that's the thing. I was like, I feel
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: like there was just an obliviousness to the 80s movies
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: that like you just can't reproduce in today's world.
- 1:37:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:37:25Speaker 4: Well, also, you know, we're dealing with, you know, like
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: two people making the decisions on those movies.
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying?
- 1:37:33Speaker 4: That's okay.
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: If you're lucky.
- 1:37:34Speaker 4: Sometimes it's just one. And if it's not good, you
- 1:37:38Speaker 4: have no backup. So you just have to go with
- 1:37:41Speaker 4: what you got. I saw a great example of this. Now,
- 1:37:45Speaker 4: this is a big budget version of that, where it's
- 1:37:48Speaker 4: just basically one or two people making the decisions and
- 1:37:53Speaker 4: just kind of letting it fly. The mind-blowing movie that
- 1:37:56Speaker 4: has the same charm. And this is not going to
- 1:37:59Speaker 4: rattle any cages. This is something well-known to everybody. But
- 1:38:02Speaker 4: I just got it on 4K. disc and we put
- 1:38:07Speaker 4: it on and flash gordon from 1980 is just all
- 1:38:11Speaker 4: right just it's just there's nothing there's nothing like flash
- 1:38:16Speaker 4: gordon 1980 i mean.
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: Just like it's all charm like all charm because you're
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: not buying any of the visuals none of it again
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: it looks like they're putting on a play Exactly. It's
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: crazy over the top. Not believing that this guy actually
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: has wings and is flying. Yeah. But you love it anyway.
- 1:38:36Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: The commitment of, you know, you've got commitment to that character. Right.
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: And this action that is going on in front of you,
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: no matter how silly it looks, no matter how crazy
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: and over top everything is, it's just like, it doesn't matter.
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: And somehow that's the charm of it is just like,
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: everyone is so involved and so like immersed in what
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: they're doing that you're just like, how can you not
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: love this to some extent?
- 1:39:02Speaker 4: Precisely. It is just almost like, it is like almost
- 1:39:07Speaker 4: like this art project and it is almost like theater
- 1:39:10Speaker 4: and it's a puppetry and ridiculousness like layered on, but
- 1:39:16Speaker 4: with like Dino DeLaRanta's money going into it, you know,
- 1:39:19Speaker 4: which wasn't infinite. Cause I mean, I said like, this
- 1:39:23Speaker 4: is like what I was like, this is like star
- 1:39:25Speaker 4: Wars is, um, disco cousin or something like that.
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:39:31Speaker 4: You know? And, and, uh, somebody said like, yeah, this
- 1:39:35Speaker 4: is like star Wars is like trailer park cousin, you know? And,
- 1:39:38Speaker 4: and I go like, I mean, kind of trailer park,
- 1:39:41Speaker 4: but I guess she meant just like the, cheapness of
- 1:39:43Speaker 4: it she said it looked you know it looks cheap
- 1:39:45Speaker 4: you know compared.
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: Well that's the thing like now they will have you
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: know giant companies behind them that they really do have
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: unlimited resources and money dino damn near bankrupted himself with
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: every movie like every movie you go back and look
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: through that he produced and it's like oh this almost
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: shut him down and yet somehow he'd like drag it
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: back out and start collecting money to make another big
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: budget nonsense movie and like It, it, he continued on,
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: but like, it's not like it was, it was unlimited resources.
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: Like that damn near killed him every time.
- 1:40:19Speaker 4: I was watching the, uh, I was watching the behind
- 1:40:21Speaker 4: the scenes stuff on it and it really was, they
- 1:40:26Speaker 4: got this production designer that was world famous or super
- 1:40:31Speaker 4: famous in Italy, like their top production designer. And they
- 1:40:36Speaker 4: got this guy to do the costumes, the sets, the
- 1:40:38Speaker 4: art direction. And that guy is basically the second director
- 1:40:43Speaker 4: of the movie because he did not read the script.
- 1:40:47Speaker 4: He just would, he got the gist of it and
- 1:40:50Speaker 4: just started designing stuff. So stuff that was supposed to
- 1:40:53Speaker 4: happen in the trees, they would show up on set
- 1:40:55Speaker 4: and it's all a cave and all. He didn't read
- 1:40:58Speaker 4: the script. He just sort of went by his gut.
- 1:41:01Speaker 4: And so there's something.
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: To be said for that. Actually, artistically speaking, there's something
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: to be said for that.
- 1:41:07Speaker 4: So he said the director, The director would say, I
- 1:41:12Speaker 4: never knew what I was going to get from this guy.
- 1:41:15Speaker 4: So we would show up on the set, see what
- 1:41:16Speaker 4: the costumes looked like, see what things happen. And they
- 1:41:21Speaker 4: just had to kind of improvise and pull that movie together.
- 1:41:26Speaker 4: But it wasn't like the director was dictating what these
- 1:41:31Speaker 4: things should look like, you know, or saying like, hey,
- 1:41:33Speaker 4: I'm going to go in for this style. It was
- 1:41:36Speaker 4: basically the costume. The production designer ran that show. And
- 1:41:40Speaker 4: the director just struggled to swim and keep it all light.
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: And, you know, I feel like that seems about right.
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: I mean, look at the movie and it seems like
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: they're driving this bus. Yeah, exactly. It's all amazing visuals.
- 1:41:54Speaker 4: It's the gold leaf paint on everything. You know, I mean, it's, it's, um,
- 1:41:59Speaker 4: those skies. I mean, it's really like, you know, and
- 1:42:02Speaker 4: you know, another dealer, I think the dealer ran us
- 1:42:05Speaker 4: also did Barbarella and it's really just kind of like,
- 1:42:08Speaker 4: How awesome that Star Wars was so popular that they
- 1:42:11Speaker 4: just gave that there was the market to put this
- 1:42:15Speaker 4: amount of resources into that kind of thing, you know?
- 1:42:19Speaker 4: And they actually, you know, get their money back on it. So,
- 1:42:24Speaker 4: I mean, the ink cloud skies and the plastic models and,
- 1:42:30Speaker 4: you know, things blowing up and sparks, you know, blowing
- 1:42:34Speaker 4: up a piece of plastic, you know? Uh, and that's
- 1:42:37Speaker 4: like a special effect. I'm going like the, when that
- 1:42:40Speaker 4: floating city blows up at the end, I'm going like, man,
- 1:42:42Speaker 4: this is really pretty beautiful. I mean, nowadays this would
- 1:42:48Speaker 4: be like a 40 minute long, you know, super realistic
- 1:42:52Speaker 4: shot from, you know, a million different angles.
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: Uh, cause you could, cause it didn't exist. Cause it's
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: all a computer model that's put together. You can shoot
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: it from wherever you want. Cause it's not a real thing.
- 1:43:04Speaker 4: That's right. That's right. And, um, and then the, but
- 1:43:09Speaker 4: in the back of 1980, it was enough to have some, uh,
- 1:43:12Speaker 4: silver spray painted towers, you know, go up with some
- 1:43:15Speaker 4: fireworks and it was fantastic, you know? And so I'm
- 1:43:19Speaker 4: going to like, man, these movies, these handmade movies, these
- 1:43:22Speaker 4: photochemical movies just become more and more precious as the
- 1:43:27Speaker 4: years go on. And they're, you know, the, the, the modern.
- 1:43:32Speaker 4: wonderful ways of filmmaking, you know, just starts crowding out,
- 1:43:38Speaker 4: you know, these handmade things, uh, more and more every year. And, uh,
- 1:43:42Speaker 4: so to go back to some of this old stuff
- 1:43:45Speaker 4: is just like, uh, it, it becomes more, it just
- 1:43:47Speaker 4: becomes more, uh, these movies become better. Even something like
- 1:43:52Speaker 4: slave girls from beyond infinity now has like its place
- 1:43:57Speaker 4: because it is such a time and place in the cinema,
- 1:44:01Speaker 4: you know, that just, you know, that that's over now,
- 1:44:04Speaker 4: you know.
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: And you start to appreciate it on a different level.
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: Cause that's the, that's the other thing I didn't realize
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: because I totally forgotten even what the plot was from
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: when I watched it on VHS. I get into this
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: rewatch a few minutes in and I'm just like, So
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: this is just the most dangerous game. Exactly.
- 1:44:22Speaker 10: Right.
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: It was so long ago when I watched it the
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: first time I hadn't seen him as dangerous.
- 1:44:27Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: So I didn't know they were stealing from it. So
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: I was just like, what is this weird, dumb story?
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: And now I get it. It's like, Oh, it's like
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: any countless number of adaptations of the same story over
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: and over again. So it's like, Oh, well now it
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: kind of fits into this larger picture too. Like movies
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: that have tried to take on that subject matter. So
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: like it, it, kind of gives it a little more
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: cachet too, because it's like, look, it's, it's taking from this,
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: you know, big traditional story and doing a bigger, different
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: space thing with it. I mean, is it bigger or
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: lesser is your, your call as the viewer, but it's
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: definitely taken a swing at it.
- 1:45:06Speaker 4: And don't you think when you realize that that's what
- 1:45:08Speaker 4: this movie is, you go like, thank God that the
- 1:45:11Speaker 4: filmmakers had enough sense to like, at least tell a
- 1:45:14Speaker 4: good story, you know?
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: I mean, Or to break it up with bickering robots,
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: which is really what was missing from a most dangerous game.
- 1:45:23Speaker 4: Pretty much it. Pretty much it.
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: That moment of bickering robots is so damn funny.
- 1:45:29Speaker 4: It is.
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: It is. I mean, it's obviously kind of stealing from
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: the bickering C3PO and R2, which they do a version
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: of that too. But it's so much more petty and
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: silly in this one that makes it a lot of fun.
- 1:45:43Speaker 4: It truly does.
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:45:45Speaker 2: So.
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:45:48Speaker 4: I mean, that's kind of cool that out there, there's
- 1:45:52Speaker 4: this classic story, A Most Dangerous Game, and there's all
- 1:45:55Speaker 4: these great different types of adaptations. But in the late 80s,
- 1:46:02Speaker 4: they made a Cinemax version of it.
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: A space version of it.
- 1:46:08Speaker 4: A space version.
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: With girls in their underwear.
- 1:46:10Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: Who decide the best thing to do when, you know,
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: going to investigate the mystery around the big castle is
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: to wear your lingerie. Yeah.
- 1:46:19Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: Absolutely. Because that makes sense. Right.
- 1:46:23Speaker 4: Right. That's what you do. That's right. I'm in my pajamas.
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: I'm going to stick with that plan. The guy next
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: to me is fully clothed.
- 1:46:31Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: But I'm going to stick with the PJ action, which
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: is just a nightie. Thanks.
- 1:46:37Speaker 4: Hilarious. But isn't the world kind of a better place
- 1:46:41Speaker 4: that we do have that adaptation of a most dangerous
- 1:46:44Speaker 4: game out there? Is that just like add to the patina?
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: I feel like it makes it a stronger story because
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: it's had this version thrown out there.
- 1:46:55Speaker 4: That you can do basically anything with that story. And
- 1:46:58Speaker 4: it works. How you dress it up.
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: Even with robots that are. This is my favorite. Well
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: first of all. Why do they call them androids? Because
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: that's not what an android is. They're just robots. And
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: then why is it that. Which by the way she's
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: my favorite. The girl in her underwear. In the see
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: through robe. The completely sheer robe. She's the. What is it?
- 1:47:24Speaker 4: Tisa.
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: She's my favorite. She's got the best 80s hair.
- 1:47:28Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:47:29Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: I like that she comes down and she's trying to
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: distract the robot from going up to the rooms and
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: finding out the right there.
- 1:47:35Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:47:35Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: So she starts pulling the, if you'd like to come
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: down to the beach with me, I don't have my
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: bathing suit. And I was like, but why does the
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: robot fall for it?
- 1:47:45Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: I was like, so wait.
- 1:47:48Speaker 4: Even robots. Even robots.
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: Yeah. I was like, what? What's going on here? Are
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: you just robots? And if so, where is this going?
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: Why would this work on you if you're just a robot?
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: So they don't really answer that question.
- 1:48:03Speaker 4: It's like 2001 A Space Odyssey. There's just certain things
- 1:48:07Speaker 4: they just don't answer.
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: Hal, would you please stop looking at naked girls? I
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: can't do that, Dave. I really like naked girls. I
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: don't even fully understand why or where this is going
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: to lead to. but I can't do it, Dave. I
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: can't stop looking at this girl on the beach.
- 1:48:24Speaker 4: This is so funny. This is so funny. Yeah, I mean,
- 1:48:27Speaker 4: even the robots couldn't resist the allures of these 80s
- 1:48:34Speaker 4: director's cable actresses.
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: There's some great. Well, and again, we had like the
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: most recognizable of the bunch. Bring Stevens.
- 1:48:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: She's one. If ever anybody's in on the joke, because
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: she was kind of always in on the joke on
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: her movies. Cause yeah, I remember talking to her and like,
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: that was the thing I was blown away by. She
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: is so freaking smart. yeah and like so like i'm
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: i'm sitting like i came into it and i just
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: kind of knew she'd done a ton of horror movies
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: and then start talking to her and she's like well
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: you know at the time i was in school for
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: marine biology yeah and i was like wait what i was.
- 1:49:08Speaker 11: Like she's like this like genius level person that decides
- 1:49:13Speaker 11: like this seems like fun i'm thinking i'm gonna do
- 1:49:15Speaker 11: this so like she's definitely way smarter than all material
- 1:49:19Speaker 11: that's ever given to her but yet she's just like eh,
- 1:49:22Speaker 11: this is fun.
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: Let's go with it. Let's have fun.
- 1:49:24Speaker 4: And that's what you feel from this movie, that they're
- 1:49:27Speaker 4: having a good time. They're all having a good time.
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: They know half this stuff doesn't make sense. Again, why
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: am I walking around in my underwear when I'm investigating this?
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: Because the audience is wanting that. That's right. You're doing this.
- 1:49:42Speaker 4: All for the audience. We're here to entertain.
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: Yeah. Do they want robots and girls in their underwear? Yes,
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: they do. And that's why we're doing it. That's it.
- 1:49:50Speaker 4: So it's like they're fully.
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: Aware of that as they're making the movie. So I
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: don't feel like they're being... put upon no no no
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: this girl showed up and be like yep this is
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: what we're making let's go and like again that's almost
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: kind of empowering.
- 1:50:04Speaker 4: Really absolutely yeah every you can tell they just have
- 1:50:06Speaker 4: a sense of humor about it and they're not you
- 1:50:10Speaker 4: know yeah they're like going like hey this is a
- 1:50:12Speaker 4: lark this is fun we all know this is silly
- 1:50:15Speaker 4: we all know this is silly you know i'm making
- 1:50:17Speaker 4: money it's a movie you know um yeah i got
- 1:50:21Speaker 4: paid you know i got lunch out of it you
- 1:50:23Speaker 4: know so hey it's uh it's a good time, you know? And, uh, yeah, no,
- 1:50:29Speaker 4: but it was funny. The, the, the other girl that's, that's,
- 1:50:33Speaker 4: that's my favorite one. The, uh, Elizabeth Hayden. And I've,
- 1:50:37Speaker 4: I've seen, I've seen too many of her movies recently.
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: I'm on a, I'm on a, I was.
- 1:50:43Speaker 4: Like a ridiculous, you know, let's watch her filmography.
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: I know you gave a shout out to her beforehand.
- 1:50:49Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: I was just like, Oh, her buddy. Cause that's like,
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: then I got into this and I'm like, no, I'm
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: so Tisa. No, I'm totally on board with Cindy Beal, who,
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: by the way, did like nothing.
- 1:50:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: Yeah. I didn't look her up and like she's got
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: almost slightly more than a cameo in my chauffeur. Right.
- 1:51:08Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: Back in the 80s there for you. And then did
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: a voice on like Dragon Ball or something.
- 1:51:14Speaker 4: Like, oh, my God, a decade later.
- 1:51:16Speaker 1: And then that's it. Nothing else on her IMDb.
- 1:51:18Speaker 4: Went back to Omaha.
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: Somewhere she's out there, yeah, just hanging out, going to
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: a regular old job now or something, I guess. I
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: don't know. But I was just like, how did you
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: make Slave Girls from Beyond Infinity and then just disappear?
- 1:51:31Speaker 4: It just sounds like a small town girl kind of story.
- 1:51:34Speaker 4: You know, I went out to this big city, ended
- 1:51:37Speaker 4: up in this movie Slave Girls from Beyond Infinity, decided
- 1:51:39Speaker 4: I didn't like the industry and went back home. You know,
- 1:51:42Speaker 4: that kind of thing.
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: Can you imagine being like the the kid it's like
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: mom i found this old poster in the garage what
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: is this she's like oh yeah i was in a
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: movie one time yeah yeah you probably wouldn't like it
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: it's pretty dumb.
- 1:51:57Speaker 4: Yeah yeah right right um okay yeah right.
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: How do you process that in your kid brain like
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: my mom was in a weird b movie with robots
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: right right she was naked through half of it you
- 1:52:10Speaker 1: know so Just in her underwear.
- 1:52:12Speaker 4: Most of the time.
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: Just in her underwear. But it was classy.
- 1:52:14Speaker 4: It was classy.
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: It was definitely classy.
- 1:52:17Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:52:20Speaker 4: So anyway, but yeah, so these, these actresses, they seem
- 1:52:25Speaker 4: to have a sense of humor of it. There's Elizabeth Ketan.
- 1:52:28Speaker 4: I've seen her a couple of other movies. She's always,
- 1:52:30Speaker 4: you know, it's just kind of fun. You know, it doesn't,
- 1:52:34Speaker 4: you know, whatever. It's just like, I don't know, it's
- 1:52:38Speaker 4: just something so unpolished and kind of approachable about these
- 1:52:44Speaker 4: kind of stories and these B-movie actors that, you know,
- 1:52:48Speaker 4: you know, just seems real fly by the seat of
- 1:52:55Speaker 4: your pants kind of stuff, you know. And, you know,
- 1:53:01Speaker 4: Slave Girls Beyond Infinity is should be put in a
- 1:53:04Speaker 4: time capsule.
- 1:53:06Speaker 1: Oh, I definitely think.
- 1:53:07Speaker 4: If time and place.
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: If there's things that need to be preserved in the
- 1:53:12Speaker 1: Smithsonian somewhere, this is one of them.
- 1:53:15Speaker 4: Put it on the registry.
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: People in the future will not believe this was a
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: thing without you showing it to them.
- 1:53:21Speaker 4: They won't. They won't.
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:53:24Speaker 4: Man.
- 1:53:25Speaker 3: Man.
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: Well, I have a much... Like from one extreme to
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: the other, I have another movie that I think you've
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: seen lately that I kind of want to hear your take. Okay.
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: If you have more time to invest in this nonsense,
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: I think, I think test to not overwhelm everyone. We
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: should wrap up this episode and then we will come
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: back and delve into a whole different. We'll, we'll change
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: gears into a whole different movie. Okay. Sort of type
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: of movie, but not really. We'll bring up that question
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: as we go on.
- 1:53:58Speaker 8: All right.
- 1:53:59Speaker 3: Cool.
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: But yeah, for now, I guess we can let them
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: go on about their lives. Okay. Have you return next
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: time to hear us go into a different mode of
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: cheesy sci-fi movie.
- 1:54:12Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: Excellent. Sounds good.
- 1:54:13Speaker 4: Sounds good.
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: They are free. More now. You're free. You must return.
- 1:54:17Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: Otherwise, that about does it. We will return next time.
- 1:54:20Speaker 1: Same geek read. Thanks for listening.
- 1:54:43Speaker 10: Don't we all feel so much smarter having played a.
- 1:54:47Speaker 8: Part in this?
- 1:54:49Speaker 4: It's a nice hat, it's a crown.
- 1:54:52Speaker 10: Out of all the hats I wear, it's easily the heaviest.
- 1:54:58Speaker 10: I know that everything I build here will burn. Won't
- 1:55:03Speaker 10: you understand the problem?
- 1:55:23Speaker 1: Let it out. Used to have opinions.
- 1:55:26Speaker 6: You still probably have more than you do.
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: But if it's free, I like it less. But if
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: it costs me flesh, I like it best.
- 1:55:31Speaker 10: You won't regret, so I got a few.
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: I know that everything.
- 1:55:35Speaker 3: I build, it will burn.
- 1:55:37Speaker 10: Once you understand the problem, you can learn how to
- 1:55:47Speaker 10: be part of it. So listen, I'm unlikely to learn.
- 1:56:03Speaker 5: Oh, I have been so afraid, down and out, and
- 1:56:18Speaker 5: planned to stay in the God.
- 1:57:04Speaker 10: Once you understand the problem You can learn how to
- 1:57:12Speaker 10: be part of it So listen, I'm a light reader
- 1:57:16Speaker 10: Now my veins are full of rust And it's worse
- 1:57:20Speaker 10: than I thought Now my heart is pumping dust But
- 1:57:27Speaker 10: my body won't stop.
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: No, I figure they'll just be like, well, I see
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: there's some sort of entity living inside of you. And
- 1:57:55Speaker 1: I think it's tired of you and it's time to
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: take its exit and rip its way through you now. Right.
- 1:58:02Speaker 4: Did you know that you had an absorbed twin, Brian?
- 1:58:07Speaker 1: I do. I named him. Why?
- 1:58:10Speaker 4: Right, right. Exactly. Well, he's regained consciousness after these years.
