- 0:01[SPEAKER_09]: I will go up to the 6th finger man and say hello, my name is Yenuga Montoya, you kill my father, prepare to die.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_11]: Hello and welcome once again to the cinephiles where each week we enter the world of a great film we explore its themes, the history, the filmmaking, and the influence it has on us today, my name is Steve Morris, I'm a filmmaker and director instructor in Los Angeles, California.
- 0:34[SPEAKER_13]: Hello, everyone, my name is John Roca, I'm a producer, writer host of shows here in Los Angeles, California and occasionally a voiceover artist as well.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_11]: And today, we are doing a film, it's the 30th anniversary, yes, which does make me feel old.
- 0:48[SPEAKER_11]: but it's also a film that I love just as much as I did the first time I saw it.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_11]: And in fact, we just did something that believe it or not after 60 plus episodes who might be up to 70 by the time this airs, and we have never done, which is we just walked out of the theater where we saw the Princess Bride together.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, we did, and you suggested this, and Fatima Vance, I guess, was doing a screening of a 30th anniversary.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_13]: It is the third time I've seen it in the theaters, and I remember the first time I saw it in the theater show.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_10]: Well, is that the first time you saw it?
- 1:19[SPEAKER_10]: What?
- 1:19[SPEAKER_10]: Right now?
- 1:20[SPEAKER_10]: No, no, no, in the theaters.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_10]: Yes.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, first time I ever saw it was in the theaters and I went, uh, when I was, how old was it?
- 1:27[SPEAKER_13]: 86 film?
- 1:27[SPEAKER_10]: 87.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_13]: 87.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_13]: 87.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_13]: So I was 16 years old, I guess, when I went to see it.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_13]: And I went on a date.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_13]: With this girl I was seeing at the time as a sophomore in high school.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_13]: I think we went to go see it And I remember it was at the AMC.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_13]: We sat on the right side of the theater and I was in the aisle back When when you have like two rows in between the main area I remember distinctly where I sat because the film was so
- 1:52[SPEAKER_13]: incredibly different and memorable to me that I've never forgotten the experience.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, for me, I saw it in the theater.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_11]: And this is one of those few stories of mine, where I went to the theater by myself.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_11]: I was seeing it alone.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_11]: Well, at in Berkeley, at the U.A.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_11]: theater on Shaddock.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_11]: And I remember walking in and just,
- 2:11[SPEAKER_11]: Like, this was my movie.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_11]: I mean, it was just so everything I love about movies was in this film.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_11]: And this is one that I watched.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_11]: You know, I owned it in every format.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_11]: I wounded on VHS on laser disk on DVD on Blue Ray.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_11]: I've watched it over and over again.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_11]: And today, we got to take my wife and my son when we went today.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_11]: And it's just like, this is one of those movies where all ages, everyone can appreciate it in their own way.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_11]: Absolutely.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_11]: You could show it to your kids.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_11]: You could show it to your grandparents.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_13]: I just adore it.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_13]: I really do.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_13]: And it's one of those films that if anyone doesn't like it or criticize Is it?
- 2:46[SPEAKER_13]: I question their heart and it's really rare Yeah, it's really rare because it does nothing but show you this incredible story book But with some real danger some funny jokes from some great comedians
- 2:59[SPEAKER_13]: and it does not lean into being this like princess fairy tale type thing there's more reality to this film there's more complexity and depth to the film then you would expect from something like this and that's what makes it so enduring because it's realistic at the same time as being a fantasy.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_13]: Well, and there's this satire.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_11]: Yes, this is whole sense of we know that what we're doing is kind of silly, and we're having fun with it.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_11]: And this is the thing I was thinking about, because it's come up on the show before, as we've talked about Galaxy Quest.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_11]: And the great thing about Galaxy Quest is that it is a parody of Star Trek, but it also loves Star Trek, and fully understands Star Trek.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_11]: And in this way is delivering a great Star Trek episode.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_11]: Well, making fun of it.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_11]: That's a great point.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_11]: And this, I think, is not that.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_11]: It's almost on the mirror.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_11]: opposite side, which is it is a great, lovely, fairy tale fantasy adventure.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_11]: While at the same time, it's tongue is just enough and it's cheek that and it does this, I can't think of any other movie that does this.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_11]: Where it is fully embracing what it is and at the same time,
- 4:00[SPEAKER_11]: allowing you to laugh at it too or laugh with it because they're laughing with your yes and on the joke with yeah Yeah, you're not laughing at it.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_11]: You're laughing with it.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_11]: Absolutely.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, that's the thing.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_11]: So I want to give some history just because it's so fascinating because of course This is a based on a book by William Goldman and we talked about William Goldman when we did all the presents man and if you want to hear a great John Roka story about William Goldman
- 4:28[SPEAKER_11]: We are not going to tell it here because you should go back and listen to our fantastic episode on all the presence men Which is one of my favorite episodes ever and it is definitely worth the story.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_13]: Did I tell that story on that?
- 4:39[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, yes It is fantastic You William Goldman is a great screenwriter great novelist and it's funny So I reread the book to do this and this is one of those few cases where the movie is fantastic
- 4:51[SPEAKER_11]: and the book is fantastic, and they're both equally fantastic, and they are slightly different, and they're very much the same, and they're totally worth your time.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_11]: And the book, of course, is written.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_11]: It's, you know, titled the, uh, a bridged, good part version of the S Morgan Stern classic, and he tells the story in his introduction.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_11]: And I'm going to try to do an abridgment of his introduction, just because it's so interesting, which is that,
- 5:13[SPEAKER_11]: You know, as a kid growing up, he had trouble in school.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_11]: He wasn't, you know, like a great reader.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_11]: He had this one teacher, Mrs. Reginski.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_11]: He was worried about him because he just wasn't applying himself.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_11]: Kind of messing up in school.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_11]: And then he gets really, really sick with pneumonia.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_11]: and he's home from school and his dad comes in to read this book to him and his dad is an immigrants, English isn't that great, he's a barber and he starts reading this book that his father read to him this, the princess bride and it was that book that changed his life because that's what started his love of
- 5:45[SPEAKER_11]: Robert Lewis Stevenson and then he comes in and Mrs. Reginski says oh you like Robert Lewis Stevenson will try you know Duma try figure Hugo try all these books and that and he credits that with him becoming a lover of adventure and writing adventure story so much so that when he publishes first book he sent it to Mrs. Reginski and said I don't know if you remember me
- 6:03[SPEAKER_11]: But you met so much to me and I wanted you know that I'm really a writer.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_11]: You thought I would never, could barely, you know, read when we started and she writes this note back that says, Oh, I, of course, I remember all my students good luck.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_11]: And he's like, Oh, she doesn't remember me.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_11]: And he turns over the note and on the back of the note, it says, it says, idiot, not even the immortal Morgan's turn could feel so parental.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_11]: But she remembered him, and as I go, wow, there's a great story, and the introduction goes on to when he's a Hollywood screenwriter and he's done a bookcast in the Sundance Kid, and he's doing all these of marathon-man and all these other things, but he doesn't have a great relationship to his son, and it's his son's birthday, because I know I'm going to give him.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_11]: As Morgan Stern, I'm going to give him the Princess Bride, so he scours all the bookstores and finds this old copy, sends it to his son, he goes home, and his son read the first chapter, he's like, he's really boring.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_11]: He's like, boring.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_11]: How could it be boring?
- 6:50[SPEAKER_11]: He looks at the book and realizes that when his dad was reading it to him, his dad with this thick accent struggling through these pages, he was skipping all these boring parts about the economics of Floren and
- 7:01[SPEAKER_11]: The costumes and the rituals of the wedding and that's what inspired him to write the a bridge to good parts only version of this classic book.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_11]: Wow.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_11]: And here's the thing about this.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_11]: Everything I just told you is complete bullshit.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_11]: Of course it is.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_11]: It's told there is no Esmergistern.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_11]: There is no princess bride.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_11]: There is no book.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_11]: He doesn't have a son.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_11]: And he has, there's no misreginski, his father was a banker and not an immigrant.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_11]: And yet, he writes this introduction so movingly that even knowing that it's bullshit as I was listening to again recently, I was like completely drawn in by it.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_11]: And he continues throughout the whole writing of the book, talking about all the things he's taking out of the original version, which, of course, does not exist.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_11]: And so, and, and, and that's one of the, and that is what made this was a best seller and just a fascinating book and all these people wanted to make it into a movie.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_11]: One of the first people he gave it to was called Reiner because he knew call Reiner and this is the early 70s and call looked at us and I don't know what to do with this.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_11]: He gave it to a son Rob who loved it, but at the time he hadn't even started doing all the family yet, right?
- 8:04[SPEAKER_11]: Robert Redford, wanted to do it, Norman Jewishson, Francois Truffau, wanted to do it.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_11]: John Bourbon, wanted to do it, and nobody could figure out how to do it.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_11]: I don't want to John Bourbon for his surprise.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_11]: No, it's so scary.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_11]: I'll be the worst.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_11]: It'll be the worst.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_11]: It'll be the worst.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, no.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_11]: And then finally, Rob Reiner, he's made spinal tap.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_11]: He's just finishing up sure thing.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_11]: And he suddenly goes, hey, my favorite book.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_11]: People make movies out of books and he goes back to William Goldman and gets the right to do it, right?
- 8:31[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_11]: And the, but still can't get studio financing to make the movie.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_11]: And the person that's instrumental is his boss from all in the family.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_11]: Norman Lear puts up all his own money to make this film.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_11]: Something they tell you not to do enough.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_11]: Yep.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_11]: The only thing he did was he made sure he had distribution.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_11]: Right.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_11]: But I think it's through Fox.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_11]: But no, it's a normally prepared for pay for this movie.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_11]: Let incredible investment that paid off.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_11]: Oh my God.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_11]: Well, not at first, as we're going to discover.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_11]: And, of course, the first thing we have to do in pre-production is that we've got to get the right cast.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_11]: This is one of the great cast of all time.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_13]: Agreed.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_13]: So much so that you can't...
- 9:11[SPEAKER_13]: See anyone else playing these parts at that time.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, and they're so surprising because a lot of us didn't know who any of these people were Obviously I knew who I wanted to the giant was Billy Crystal would have a carcane from taxi But I had no idea who carry.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_13]: Oh is was I had no idea who Robin right was no and man to pretend And I had no because I had not seen anything on Broadway that he was famous becoming famous for right and so for me These were a lot of these were new actors and especially all the British ones.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_13]: I didn't know Peter Cook was all right Toby
- 9:39[SPEAKER_13]: Smith plays the the old the guy who takes a bite of orchard the albino Smith.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, I didn't know any of these people and they're all cast There's this combination.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_11]: We're gonna kind of go through them as we meet.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, but there's this combination of there is no other human on earth who could play this part Right, and there's also people and there's like how the hell did you come up with casting that person?
- 9:58[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah as this role.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, and so brilliantly
- 10:02[SPEAKER_11]: done by that person.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_11]: Absolutely.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_11]: Should we get in the phone?
- 10:05[SPEAKER_11]: Let's do it.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_11]: So we start with a video game.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_13]: I remember this video game too.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_11]: I remember too.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_11]: And it was so funny because we watched it literally just a couple hours ago we were watching this video game.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_11]: I'm sitting next to my six year old son and going like he doesn't even know what that is.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_11]: No, we spent hours playing little baseball video game like that.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_13]: Those are the graphics we had to
- 10:25[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, that's you with your HD 4K 3D virtual reality.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_11]: Look at that, we had one button, and there is young friend's average, playing this video game.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_11]: Did you watch the one two years?
- 10:41[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, of course, sure.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, I mean, he's, he's a perfect little kid in this.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, and I've, well, I've actually enjoyed for its average for quite some time, even after this, you know.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, he, he did, he even did that, he did a sitcom called Working Which I enjoyed, and so it was good.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, and so there's a number of things that I've seen him, and of course our friend Michael is really good friends with Fred and so yeah, and so yeah, he's, uh, perfect.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_11]: in our lives of yeah and we find out he's home sick which of course parallels what happens in the non-existent right story of the introduction and grandpa's going to come and read if we're in in walks peterfock yeah this is again it's perfect casting you can't be any better now just great i mean who knew colombo could play this grandfatherly part that was so perfect any you know his hair is
- 11:23[SPEAKER_13]: his hair is obviously dyed gray and but he has this great like physicality to him and a costume is great like thin tie yeah that's how you grandpa that's how you saw American grandfather's look of grandfather's look rather the hat and all the whole nine it was just brilliant and and and and his friend nice to him
- 11:39[SPEAKER_13]: No, I don't know.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_13]: No, he's a brat, he's a little kid.
- 11:41[SPEAKER_13]: They're rotated by him.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_13]: He's irritated by him.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_13]: Well, I'm only rotated by...
- 11:44[SPEAKER_13]: Exactly.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_13]: The old guys who come because they don't care.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_13]: They've lived the life already.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_13]: You're still starting out life.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_13]: Well, they don't get you.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_11]: No, you know, I want to sit here and play video games.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_11]: What's Grandpa brought me in old book?
- 11:56[SPEAKER_20]: That's right.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_20]: When I was your age television was called books.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_11]: And this is one of the things that is key to this film is that is that yes, it is sword fighting and giants and fire and torture and adventure and true love.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_11]: And it's also about
- 12:13[SPEAKER_11]: Okay, the passing down of stories from generation to generation.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_11]: And the importance of that, and that's what we're going to get in, because Grandpa's going to read this story, that his father read to him, and he read to his father, and Grandpa's going to start reading it to Fred.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_11]: And we go into the Princess Pride.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_11]: It's funny, you wouldn't think that Peter Falk would make a good narrator.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_13]: No, well, yeah, right.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_11]: Because he's got that Peter Falk, you don't say that.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, that's not a narrator voice, and it's perfect.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_11]: It is, it really is.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_20]: The Princess Pride.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_20]: by his Morgan Stern, chapter 1.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_20]: By the cup was raised on a small farm in the country of Florida.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_20]: Our favorite past times were riding a horse and tormenting the farm boy that worked there.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_20]: His name was Wesley, but she never called him that.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_20]: Isn't that a wonderful beginning?
- 13:04[SPEAKER_12]: Yeah, it's really good.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_11]: I mean, go and meet Buttercup and the farm boy.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_11]: So our first bits of casting, Robin Wright and Caria West.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_11]: I'm not getting, you know, people say like, could there possibly be two more beautiful people on the whole planet at this time?
- 13:19[SPEAKER_11]: And those are two really beautiful people.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_13]: Yep.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_13]: and they work well together perfectly.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_13]: Because as the film progresses, you see that they're more than just beautiful people, which is what's great about them.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_11]: Well, because what they have to do, there's so much wrestling on them, particularly on karaoke, I would say, because, and this is the thing, is that they needed someone to look that beautiful.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_11]: They needed someone who could physically do what they wanted them to do, and they needed someone who could be funny in this very particular narrow way of being funny.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_11]: And I think when they did the audition, they flew out to a movie that Cariolis is on, and he did a Bill Cosby impression.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_11]: and they thought it was hilarious and they're like, oh good, he's funny.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_11]: Oh.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_11]: And by the way, Carrie always went red to Princess Bide when he was 13 and it was one of his favorite books.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_11]: Wow.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_11]: So he knew this was a big deal.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, he knew that this was important and he was terrified.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_11]: Because he wasn't a big star.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_11]: He'd been in a couple of movies.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_11]: But this is being, Errol Flynn.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_11]: This is being Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Yeah.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_11]: And he's got to carry the film.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_11]: And he's amazing.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_13]: He is amazing.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_13]: And my God, as he's beautiful man, like just he is.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_13]: From just those shots, they have his hair's perfect, perfect length to come just over his eyes.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_13]: Like all of it is done in a way that evokes the old school type of very well-known.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, this was broccoli and all that kind of stuff.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_13]: He's a farm boy and you know that you and this is so interesting about the film things are presented to you and you don't you don't even question No, like she's like where's her parents?
- 14:48[SPEAKER_13]: No, why is he the farm boy for her place like what is that all about like is every house assigned to farm boy like what is this all about so you see it all Progress through the thing and you don't question it because you just want you just immediately buy this relationship and they don't spend a lot of time falling in love
- 15:01[SPEAKER_13]: no Steve there's there's just like 12 lines yeah it's just exchanges and he's saying the same line over and over again she's the one saying different lines and it's looks and that's where the real acting come especially watching and having watched it again in the theater now there's so much power and just the look in the everything they're doing Robin right and Robin right you know she's 19 she's been on a soap opera Santa Barbara oh she's
- 15:20[SPEAKER_11]: put it if she's putting that was all she had done and she's putting this English accent on and she has so much power on screen and so much and the connection between the two of them is instant and for those of you out there interested in screenwriting like I said I love the book read this chapter in the book and then watch the film and you will see all of the things you're asking about the parents and the relationship and all those details they're in the book oh and she's and they're great and
- 15:45[SPEAKER_11]: And they shouldn't be in the movie and William Goldman wrote the book and also wrote the screenplay and this is why he's a great screenwriter.
- 15:52[SPEAKER_11]: It's he understands like, oh, we only need 12 lines.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_11]: And looks and that will do everything that he did really well in the book.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_11]: Now we're gonna do it in just these moments.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_11]: And all he says, you say whatever she asks him to do, all he says is, as you wish.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_20]: That day she was amazed at the discovery that when he was saying as you wish, what he meant was, I love you.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_20]: And even more amazing was the day she realized she truly loved him back.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_11]: And then we know that they're in love, and they're just about to kiss, and what happens?
- 16:27[SPEAKER_13]: Friends, I would just... Grandpa, this is a kissing book.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_11]: Don't tell me this is a kissing book.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_11]: Which, first of all, my son has already done those things.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_11]: It's second of all, it establishes this thing that we're going to do all the time, which is we're going to cut out of the story and have discussion of the story with Grandpa and Fred's average.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_13]: And this one makes the film so unique.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_13]: Absolutely.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_13]: Because it's able to create this kind of love story occurring between Fred's average and Peter Faulk as the love story is happening in the movie.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_13]: Right.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_13]: So that when the end happens, we've found like this connection in both the world.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_13]: world's, you know, absolutely right.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_11]: Yes, that was a really good way to put it.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_11]: And we go back to the story and Wesley is going to go off to find his fortune because he doesn't he can't just be a farm boy and very buttercup.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_11]: He wants to marry her.
- 17:11[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, he wants to marry her and she's worried that he won't come back and he interests this.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_11]: I have like, no, this is true love.
- 17:17[SPEAKER_11]: So of course I'll come back and that's what a lot of what this it's funny that this movie has this idea of true love but also throughout the film is going to talk about things not being fair in the real world and it's kind of going to do both yeah um and he goes off and instantly as he goes off we hear that the ship that he's on was attacked by the dreadright private robberts and Wesley is dead and Buttercup says I will never love again yeah she needs
- 17:44[SPEAKER_13]: or sleep for days, isn't it?
- 17:47[SPEAKER_13]: Is it Westley, right with a T?
- 17:50[SPEAKER_13]: Westley, isn't it?
- 17:51[SPEAKER_13]: I think you're right, okay.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_11]: I want to make sure because this bothered me for years.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_11]: Um, yeah, I don't know.
- 17:57[SPEAKER_11]: I now we should we should look up exactly how it's spelled on IMDB So as we continue John will be looking out for a spelled.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_11]: I just feel like that's how they say it in the movie and and I Westly yeah, father needs it's the British.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, oh, maybe it's that maybe there is no tea and they're just prenells.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_11]: No, I actually don't know knock out nothing Someone who can spell
- 18:16[SPEAKER_11]: Uh, yeah, so it is Wesley with a T. Yes.
- 18:20[SPEAKER_11]: Wesley.
- 18:20[SPEAKER_11]: Right.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_11]: I'm going to work very hard throughout the rest of the podcast to emphasize the T within Wesley's name.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_11]: Something to put.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_11]: All right.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_11]: Okay.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_11]: So it's five years later.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_11]: There's a big announcement outwalks the Prince Chris surrounding my people.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_11]: Yes, I think he has a hard job in this movie because he has the balance He's right on the edge all the time camp of camp.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_11]: Yes, and silliness and also being sort of elegant and it's it's any doesn't perfectly
- 18:51[SPEAKER_13]: he has the perfect voice for it, you know, and we, we haven't done dog death to noon yet, but he's such an integral part of that film.
- 18:58[SPEAKER_13]: And I don't, I only know Chris Rayner from a few things like childhood play.
- 19:02[SPEAKER_13]: So something like this is what I always remember him from.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_13]: And that voice, he, he affects is really well done, you know, love her as I loved her.
- 19:10[SPEAKER_13]: You know, there's kinds of things that he does convey a king type of approach.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_13]: But not so much so that it becomes force or ridiculous.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_13]: And it is you believe him because you need a good actor that can convey this.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_13]: And so you as the audience believe him, because he's going to be our main villain.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_13]: And so to see what he's doing, you have to invest that he believes that he is telling the truth with his performance.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_11]: Well, and he's walking the line that I think the movie walks, which is, we are in this world.
- 19:38[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 19:38[SPEAKER_11]: And we're also laughing at the world a little bit.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_11]: Like we know we're not supposed to take this 100% seriously, except when we do.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_11]: It's a very interesting thing this movie is going to do.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_11]: So he says, I'm in a very Princess Buttercup.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_11]: And out she comes, she's best at a beautiful dress, looking very sad, because we know that she of course still loves Wesley.
- 19:57[SPEAKER_11]: Right.
- 19:58[SPEAKER_11]: And then she jumps on her horse.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_11]: It's the only thing she loves to do.
- 20:02[SPEAKER_11]: She goes out riding and we run into our three kidnappers.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_03]: We are but poor lost circus performers.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_11]: Is there a village nearby?
- 20:13[SPEAKER_11]: Where would you like to start?
- 20:14[SPEAKER_10]: Would you like to go tall to short or short to tall to tall?
- 20:18[SPEAKER_10]: So we just start with Wallace Shaw.
- 20:19[SPEAKER_10]: Wallace Shaw on.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_11]: This is inspired.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_11]: I mean, they're all inspired casting.
- 20:24[SPEAKER_11]: But the book, this is the Sicilian.
- 20:26[SPEAKER_11]: Like if you read the book, this is like the mobster.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, that's who the characters.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_11]: There's nothing remotely Sicilian about Walshah.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_11]: Right.
- 20:35[SPEAKER_11]: Walshah to brilliant intellectual playwright, my dinner with Andre, like he is this neurotic Jewish New York guy.
- 20:42[SPEAKER_11]: With a weird list of this big voice, strange sound.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_11]: And he is so great and so funny.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_11]: And he was terrified throughout this entire movie.
- 20:53[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, when we watched the movie, they had a little intro with Mankowitz from TCM talking to Reiner, and Reiner said that Danny DeVito had turned it down or was too busy or something didn't work out, that they didn't bring Danny DeVito, and so Wallace was constantly on set, afraid that he was going to be fired by Rob Reiner, at least in the initial part of the shooting, and then eventually settled in when Reiner told him that this is who he sounds exactly like you in my mind, so just speak as you would speak.
- 21:21[SPEAKER_11]: And this is a great, it's a great direction, is that, and this is something we're going to talk about throughout, is that.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_11]: We talked about all these directors who are demanding and difficult and angry and mean and controlling and that is not Rob Reiner.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_11]: No.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_11]: Rob Reiner is lovely and sweet and everyone has fun making the movie.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_11]: And if you read, there's a book as you wish, which is Carrie Elwis's book, remembering the Princess Bride.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_11]: And I actually listened to it, which I highly recommend because if you listen to it, it's all the interviews with the people.
- 21:49[SPEAKER_11]: And therefore, the voices are done by Rob Reiner and Robin Wright and Billy Crystal and all the cast.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_11]: are doing all they're telling their stories of the movie.
- 21:56[SPEAKER_11]: Holy crap.
- 21:56[SPEAKER_11]: And if you wanted to listen to it, I would recommend doing it with our good friends at Audible.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_11]: Boom!
- 22:01[SPEAKER_11]: Audible is of course the largest place to listen to audiobooks.
- 22:04[SPEAKER_11]: I've been a subscriber for years.
- 22:06[SPEAKER_11]: And if you want to do it, go to audible.com slash the cinephiles.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_11]: We'll give you a free book.
- 22:11[SPEAKER_11]: You can cancel at any time and subscribe and look at their incredible library, including as you wish.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_11]: And the thing that he and everybody else talks about is how warm and lovely
- 22:22[SPEAKER_11]: and how supportive is a director in the direction that you just mentioned is that wallishan is saying, I'm not this person.
- 22:28[SPEAKER_11]: I'm not that I can't do this.
- 22:28[SPEAKER_11]: I can't do this.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_11]: And Rob Reiner says, no, the scene he sounds exactly like you.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, that is who he is.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_11]: And wallishan goes, oh, okay.
- 22:36[SPEAKER_11]: And that makes sense.
- 22:37[SPEAKER_11]: Damn.
- 22:38[SPEAKER_11]: He's inspired casting.
- 22:40[SPEAKER_11]: And if we move up in height, we get to Mandy Patinka.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_11]: Like so, I knew a little Mandy Potentkin because I heard some of the Broadway albums and Mandy had, and when I'd seen Yentel, which comes out before this, Mandy Potentkin has the voice of an angel.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_11]: He's one of the greatest Broadway voices of all time.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_11]: And so, and playing all these really interested, a complicated part.
- 22:58[SPEAKER_11]: But now you're gonna cast him as this Spanish fencer.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, how do you come up with that?
- 23:02[SPEAKER_13]: It's fascinating too, because Potentkin is not Spanish.
- 23:05[SPEAKER_13]: Nope.
- 23:05[SPEAKER_13]: In any way, shape or form.
- 23:06[SPEAKER_13]: He's dark.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_13]: Right, but it's one of these things that, like, if you're going to cast a character like this,
- 23:12[SPEAKER_13]: You got to find the right actor.
- 23:13[SPEAKER_13]: If you're not going to find Latino actor or Spanish actor, you got to find the right actor.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_13]: And Patinken, in no way did I think that guy was not Spanish when I saw it the first time I saw it.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_13]: Oh, yeah.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_13]: And that's what's so amazing about him.
- 23:24[SPEAKER_13]: Like, in no way, like what I saw Scarface, I knew, but you know, because I've seen Godfather and he's not a new, wasn't Latino.
- 23:30[SPEAKER_13]: But with, with, particularly because I never seen him before, I had no idea and his accent is spot on.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_13]: His mannerisms are spot on.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_13]: His whole frustration,
- 23:40[SPEAKER_13]: of certain situations is very reminiscent of Latinos that I've grown up with in my family or that I, there are moments that I've been this way too and so for me he is my favorite character in the movie, he is my absolute favorite character in the movie for so many reasons but certainly that and he does such a fantastic portrayal of this guy because once again he walks the line of the hubris of a Spaniard
- 24:01[SPEAKER_13]: combined with the vulnerable insecurity of a spannier that is always covered up by the hubris and it's so it's both of them are endearing when they appear throughout the whole film.
- 24:11[SPEAKER_11]: And he does this other thing which watching this time was really interesting watch is like he's not that smart no and he's happy this is this is the sign of great actors to me is that they under they're happy kind of having
- 24:23[SPEAKER_13]: of humor be about them yes you know like watching him try to count and watching him like his way his brain processes right is not he he operates in a different speed I think then yeah I don't know if I would say I want to take that back of them I don't think I would say he's not smart I would say he doesn't think he's smart he doesn't know he's smart but I think he is smart he doesn't know he's smart he's the one that comes up with
- 24:46[SPEAKER_13]: He's the one that comes up with these things that motivates the story to go long in a lot of spots, but he doesn't think he's being smart.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_13]: That's the thing about him, which I enjoy.
- 24:59[SPEAKER_11]: Well, and he's aware of his limitations.
- 25:01[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_11]: He's like, well, I can't figure these things out.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_11]: Right.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_11]: And because, you know, one of the things that Vesini says is, in order to be a source, when you must have studied.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_11]: Right.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_11]: certainly studied.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_11]: All right.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_11]: We've reached the height.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_11]: I have things to say about under the giant.
- 25:18[SPEAKER_11]: No, I'm going to defer to you because you're the wrestling guy, right?
- 25:23[SPEAKER_11]: Your relationship to him has got to be, oh, go away back.
- 25:26[SPEAKER_13]: It's decades.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_13]: Well, because like when you start, when I start watching wrestling in the late 70s, early 80s,
- 25:31[SPEAKER_13]: He was just so big, he was so big, not just physically as a presence in professional wrestling.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_13]: Whenever she showed up, you just didn't think it was possible for him to be beat, you know?
- 25:41[SPEAKER_13]: And so when they start when wrestling, we're wrestling Federation took off and Hulk Hogan really like brought them to the forefront and made mainstream and popular, the big guy who had been carrying it for years,
- 25:53[SPEAKER_13]: Andre the giant on that side not Rick Flair was on and it was in another federation under the giant was carrying WWE for a long time He would go through European go to in Japan He would fight all over the world and this is a man who was French and he he has an incredible life If you want to go and research his life read his read the things about his butt like his his parents were friends with this poet or writer that I can remember the name of your bucket
- 26:18[SPEAKER_13]: Samuel Beckett, yes, and he Beckett would take him to school because Beckett had a car big enough without a roof.
- 26:23[SPEAKER_13]: So because he's like six foot taller like nine years old or something.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, convertible to take him to school.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_13]: He's the only one who can take him to school because he's so massive.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_13]: And so all this stuff is going on.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_13]: And Andre is an incredibly interesting guy, very strong guy.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_13]: Also kind of tragic in the end when he died because he died at his father's funeral.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, I didn't know.
- 26:41[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_13]: He went to his father's funeral in France.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_13]: He died either that night or the next morning.
- 26:46[SPEAKER_13]: Oh, wow.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_13]: He was a grief and drinking on his own physical problems from being, you know, the best size he was.
- 26:51[SPEAKER_13]: But all of that could not have helped his father dying could not have helped him in that situation.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, wow.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_13]: He was in they found him either the next morning or that night they found him just dead in his in his bed.
- 27:02[SPEAKER_11]: That's an eye and I never heard that.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_13]: And so, but he is an incredible story, just an incredible story and, you know, everything led up to him fighting a Hulk Hogan and WrestleMania 3.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_13]: That's the one that everyone talks about, because no one thought anyone could pick up on to the giant and body-same him and Hogan data.
- 27:28[SPEAKER_13]: And so we're such a huge thing, and wrestlers didn't really go into mainstream movies at this time, for successful ways until under the giant, and you have Luke Abrazi, but he wasn't really well-known wrestler, and you had to know he was a wrestler?
- 27:43[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, he was a wrestler at the actor who played Luke Abrazi, and also in Requiem for a Dream Anthony Quinn, there's a couple other people who were professional wrestlers at the time in the 50s and 60s were in that movie, but this is something else, and
- 27:55[SPEAKER_13]: The one thing about Andre Andre was always a face, and then he'd become a heal, but he was always a face, and so to see him kind of at this time, after he'd had his run as a heal, to kind of doing this movie at this time kind of coming back to being a face, which is a good guy character.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_13]: It was so great, you know?
- 28:13[SPEAKER_11]: So a very little to add ball, two things I'll add to that are the stories that I heard about him in addition to just the size of him and the size of his hands and the amount that he could consume both food wise and alcohol wise.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, or just like drinking entire bottle of, you know, brandy or something, you know, like nothing like nothing.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_11]: But the biggest thing that I got the sense of listening to everyone talk about him is he's the most beloved person in the set, is that everybody, he was the kindest, gentlest, warmest, and that the most affected that every single person, while a Sean said stories about him, Robin Wright, Kerry O'er, as many as he can all have said, like he was the most affecting and the biggest joy was to get to know him over the months of shooting this film.
- 28:56[SPEAKER_11]: And William Goldman, by the way, that's who he wanted when he wrote it because he was a huge wrestling fan And he would go to see Andre the giant in Madison Square Garden into who he was and he wanted for the beginning There's a brief moment.
- 29:09[SPEAKER_11]: I think when maybe Norman Jewish Center something was talking about doing it that they were gonna get Arnold to be
- 29:13[SPEAKER_11]: to be fuzzy.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_11]: Interesting.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_11]: But that didn't happen.
- 29:17[SPEAKER_11]: No.
- 29:17[SPEAKER_11]: And everyone did this impression, so I'll probably do it too, is that Rob auditioned him with one scene, and that apparently Andre kind of, and Rob said, well, do you want to do it?
- 29:25[SPEAKER_11]: He says, yeah, I'll do it.
- 29:26[SPEAKER_11]: Boss.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_11]: That's what he called everyone boss, and then Andre didn't really get that, no, he had to do more than that one scene, and this was going to take.
- 29:34[SPEAKER_11]: weeks and weeks, and what Rob did was record every single one of his lines on a cassette.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_11]: So Andre, whose English wasn't great, could listen to him in Rob Reiner's inflection over and over and over again, and so what we're hearing is Andre, the Giants interpretation of Rob Reiner delivering all of physics lines.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, wow.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_13]: I want to tell you one last story.
- 29:53[SPEAKER_13]: Yes, please.
- 29:54[SPEAKER_13]: With Andre, the Giants and the Hulk Hogan talked about in his documentary of the better.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_13]: Andre Durman was a great practical joker as well, or he was fascinated by his size.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_13]: He was at times a way, like he was big, but he was also, it was almost like he was outside himself, watching himself do stuff.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_13]: And the way he used to mess with Hogan with Hogan is when they would fight in Japan because it's such a, you know, things are small in that.
- 30:16[SPEAKER_13]: It's a country, right.
- 30:17[SPEAKER_13]: They didn't have beds for him or toilets.
- 30:19[SPEAKER_13]: He could not use a Japanese toilet when he was in Japan.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_13]: So he would have to lay papers, newspapers out on the bed and take a shit on the bed.
- 30:29[SPEAKER_13]: Oh God.
- 30:29[SPEAKER_13]: Yes, no, this is a massive mess.
- 30:31[SPEAKER_13]: I was gonna say.
- 30:32[SPEAKER_13]: So he would trick Hogan to come down and help him in the rooms.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_13]: Like, hey, I can't get this.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_13]: We come down to help me, like, I can't reach this or it's like, it's too stuck on my hands too big, blah, blah, every day he would trick Hogan in some way, almost like be a bracket.
- 30:44[SPEAKER_13]: See, with the trick him in the coming into his room.
- 30:46[SPEAKER_13]: So he could show him the piles of shit that he did on the newspaper in the bed.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_13]: He just thought it was hilarious.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_13]: He just thought it was so funny that this is what he would have to do in order to live his life.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_13]: In order to exist in Japan.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_13]: And he was there all the time wrestling.
- 31:02[SPEAKER_13]: So it's just fascinating.
- 31:04[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, I can't imagine what his life was like.
- 31:06[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, it's intense.
- 31:07[SPEAKER_11]: So we have our three kidnappers.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_11]: They kidnapped the princess.
- 31:10[SPEAKER_11]: We're heading off to this boat.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_11]: And this is when we start to get to know the characters.
- 31:13[SPEAKER_11]: And we start to find out that they're doing this to set up Gilder.
- 31:16[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 31:17[SPEAKER_11]: But they want, so there's foreign, which is the country that we're in, which of course is fictitious.
- 31:22[SPEAKER_11]: existed and there's Gilder, which is their traditional enemy and we're going to frame them for this because somebody wants to start a war and we start to meet these two characters, these three characters, and you immediately start to love in a go and fuzz it, chemistry is so important if man, and those three have just fantastic chemistry.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_13]: And once again, there's another situation where I would say Nigo is here's Vesini yelling at both of them.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_03]: Can you?
- 31:48[SPEAKER_03]: Friendless.
- 31:50[SPEAKER_03]: Brainless.
- 31:51[SPEAKER_03]: Helpless.
- 31:52[SPEAKER_03]: Helpless.
- 31:53[SPEAKER_03]: Do you want me to send you back to where you were?
- 31:56[SPEAKER_03]: Unemployed in Greenland.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_13]: how brilliant is it to have the smallest guy just be rating both of them, one more skilled than him and one obviously physically could throw him 30 yards or something, right?
- 32:10[SPEAKER_13]: But it's so great to have him be the one that makes them like kind of shut up.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_13]: But what's smart about Inigo is he has an affection for his friend, he knows how to get his friend out of it and walks over and starts doing the rhyming game with him to kind of get him back to normal because he had been hurt by what the senior said to him.
- 32:27[SPEAKER_09]: The sinny, he can fast.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_17]: Fast, fast.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_17]: Think you like to scream at us.
- 32:37[SPEAKER_08]: Probably he means not harm.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_17]: He's really very short on him.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_11]: And this is this interesting thing this movie does, which is, these are, we're kind of introduced to these characters as the bad guys, right?
- 32:55[SPEAKER_11]: And while Ashana is clearly Visini is a horrible person, and because he abuses them so relentlessly, and then because they have the rhyming game, we like them.
- 33:05[SPEAKER_11]: Yes, immediately, immediately we just like these guys.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_11]: So they're off sailing on the boat, and Indigo keeps looking back, and it would be because maybe someone's followed us, and that would be That would be inconceivable.
- 33:17[SPEAKER_11]: Yes, the greatest line.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_11]: And then I love like again, he looks back again, and Says you sure no one can follow us and Vizini gives this great long answer of why and then says out of curiosity.
- 33:30[SPEAKER_19]: Why do you ask?
- 33:32[SPEAKER_19]: Suddenly, I just happened to look behind us, and something is there.
- 33:36[SPEAKER_11]: I love, I love many pretend-consacks, and the way he delivers these lines.
- 33:41[SPEAKER_11]: Because I just look back in that suddenly, there's something there.
- 33:44[SPEAKER_11]: It's so good.
- 33:44[SPEAKER_13]: And then the princess takes that.
- 33:47[SPEAKER_13]: distraction to try to escape jumps off the boat starts swimming out to seeing gets pretty far away from the boat And actually like 20 or 30 feet and then The scene he makes them kind of steer the boat to the left so they could catch up the princess in the whole time He's talking the princess and you hear the sound Yes, like Rimal sound and that you princess is the sound of the shrieking eels And you know these are not expensive special effects.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_11]: No, no, but you don't want that in the film like this
- 34:17[SPEAKER_11]: Well, this is, but again, this is like this movie has been lost.
- 34:20[SPEAKER_11]: There is no princess bride, right?
- 34:22[SPEAKER_11]: Being, I mean, not that any people were making this movie all the time, but like everything has to be really big.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_11]: And this isn't big, and that's part of its joy.
- 34:29[SPEAKER_11]: And just as things are getting kind of stressful, and as I was worrying about my son sitting next to me in the movie theater, what do we do?
- 34:36[SPEAKER_11]: We cut out again.
- 34:37[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 34:38[SPEAKER_11]: Because Grandpa says, She doesn't get eaten by the yields at this time.
- 34:41[SPEAKER_11]: And Fred's average is going, what are you talking about?
- 34:45[SPEAKER_11]: It's like, well, I'm saying, because you look kind of nervous.
- 34:47[SPEAKER_11]: And there's a great shot of him clutching his head sheets.
- 34:50[SPEAKER_11]: It's a slowly, unclutching, it's great.
- 34:53[SPEAKER_11]: And I love what he says.
- 34:54[SPEAKER_11]: I was concerned, but that's not the same thing.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_11]: It's a different thing, different thing.
- 34:59[SPEAKER_11]: Which, you know, it's funny, because this is something you've said over and over again.
- 35:02[SPEAKER_11]: And I have, too, which is that it's funny watching movies at different times in your life.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 35:06[SPEAKER_11]: And now I'm the parent.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_11]: Now, I spent all this time reading to my son, we've been reading Harry Potter books and there's some parts in those we've done the first two and there's some parts where it gets pretty scary.
- 35:18[SPEAKER_11]: And so I'm checking in with my son just like grandpa's checking in with Fred Savage, like this is going to be okay.
- 35:24[SPEAKER_11]: Even before going to see the movie, I gave him little warnings about the things that might be scary and what they were.
- 35:29[SPEAKER_11]: That was going to be okay, you know, because that's now who it now I'm grandpa.
- 35:34[SPEAKER_11]: Or at least that.
- 35:35[SPEAKER_11]: We rescue the princess and the the other ship is right on top of them and by the way this is all shot in a tank.
- 35:44[SPEAKER_11]: That's a model ship with force perspective.
- 35:46[SPEAKER_11]: It's all very small and it looks like it's shot on a tank.
- 35:49[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah and it's fine.
- 35:50[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah of course.
- 35:51[SPEAKER_11]: Anyway now we're heading to the cliffs of insanity.
- 35:55[SPEAKER_11]: One of my favorite names in the world.
- 35:57[SPEAKER_11]: I laugh every time it's said in the film, it's hilarious.
- 36:02[SPEAKER_11]: And we get off of the boat and we put on this weird harness onto Andre the Giant, strap all three people on and he starts climbing up the cliffs.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_11]: Great effect, by the way.
- 36:11[SPEAKER_11]: It's done very well.
- 36:12[SPEAKER_13]: It's so believable what you're watching.
- 36:15[SPEAKER_13]: You can't tell from a distance obviously those are like dolls and he's being yanked of some kind of harness and he's just made it seem like he's climbing up the rope but it looks so believable.
- 36:25[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 36:25[SPEAKER_11]: And some of it's shot on a real location, which is real cliffs in England.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_11]: So almost basically 99.9% of it's movie shot in England.
- 36:32[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 36:32[SPEAKER_11]: And there is a real location that's not under the giant.
- 36:35[SPEAKER_11]: It's a big stuntman with dolls strapped on them.
- 36:37[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 36:38[SPEAKER_11]: And the other stuff is done on a set.
- 36:40[SPEAKER_11]: And they're on like a lift.
- 36:42[SPEAKER_11]: And two things about this.
- 36:43[SPEAKER_11]: One thing is when they cast under the giant, the big worry they had was Kenny deliver the lines.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_11]: Because it has a heavy accent.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_11]: The one thing they weren't worried about is can't he do all the physical giant stuff and in ended up that was a real problem because his back was out he was in horrible pain throughout the whole process And he couldn't pick anybody up and so they do have everyone and then the other problem they had when they shot this part is That while a shan was desperately afraid of heights
- 37:08[SPEAKER_11]: So terrified, and they're on like a forklift basically lifting them up, 25 feet up in the air and while a shunt still thinks I'm going to be fired.
- 37:18[SPEAKER_11]: And so he can't show anyone that he's afraid of heights and he does tell Andre the Giant and Andre just patded him on the head and said, I will take care of you.
- 37:26[SPEAKER_11]: And he would just pet him like a child like a like a dog as they did you're okay.
- 37:32[SPEAKER_11]: You're okay.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_11]: Between takes amazing.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_11]: And what's so funny is Wallace Sean said I don't think I could come through that without a mood.
- 37:39[SPEAKER_11]: So to have this huge hand it was made him feel so safe and comforting that he got through this going up on this list.
- 37:47[SPEAKER_11]: It's not awesome.
- 37:48[SPEAKER_11]: It's fantastic.
- 37:49[SPEAKER_11]: I love it.
- 37:49[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 37:51[SPEAKER_11]: And right after they start going on the mountain, this man and black jumps out of the boat and he starts climbing right up too.
- 37:59[SPEAKER_11]: And the his climbing is somewhat ridiculous looking and awesome.
- 38:03[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, and he's flying up.
- 38:06[SPEAKER_19]: He's climbing the rope.
- 38:08[SPEAKER_19]: And he's getting on us.
- 38:10[SPEAKER_19]: In conceivable.
- 38:11[SPEAKER_13]: Well, that's the second or third time we hear the word inconceivable.
- 38:15[SPEAKER_11]: We're supposed to, we should, bed several times.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_11]: And now, while Sean is, Fesini's choice here is to berate his giant.
- 38:23[SPEAKER_10]: Yes, to install them in the script.
- 38:25[SPEAKER_11]: It is hilarious.
- 38:26[SPEAKER_03]: We're supposed to be this colossus.
- 38:28[SPEAKER_03]: You were this great legendary thing, and yet he gains.
- 38:32[SPEAKER_17]: Well, I'm very cheap people.
- 38:34[SPEAKER_17]: Let me get on them, sir.
- 38:36[SPEAKER_03]: I do not accept excuses.
- 38:37[SPEAKER_03]: I'm desperate after find myself a new giant, that's all.
- 38:39[SPEAKER_17]: Don't say that, don't you?
- 38:41[SPEAKER_17]: Please.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_17]: You were supposed to be this... Alasus!
- 38:45[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, this is such a great word, Colossus.
- 38:47[SPEAKER_11]: Well, this is, by the way, this is going to be one of the problem with putting this episode of the cinephiles together, because I'm just going to want to put it in the whole movie.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_11]: Yes, sure.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_11]: Because everything, while a Sean says, in this moment is awesome, it's very funny.
- 38:58[SPEAKER_11]: It's really funny.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_13]: I mentioned that your job was on the line.
- 39:02[SPEAKER_11]: There's just such a great delivery in his voice.
- 39:05[SPEAKER_11]: And did I mention that your job was on the line is one of the many examples of the sort of out-of-time kinds of language and the sense of humor where you go.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, we're not.
- 39:15[SPEAKER_11]: That's, what is this movie exactly?
- 39:17[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 39:17[SPEAKER_11]: Because we're not 100% in this world of this time because
- 39:21[SPEAKER_03]: that I make it clear that your job is at stake.
- 39:25[SPEAKER_11]: We make it to the top of the cliffs of insanity and they decide, of course, to cut the rope.
- 39:31[SPEAKER_11]: Yes, and it's really very well built and good music failed.
- 39:34[SPEAKER_11]: The rope cuts the rope slides through and they look down and he's still hanging on to the thing.
- 39:39[SPEAKER_11]: And what does Vizini say?
- 39:41[SPEAKER_03]: He didn't fall and could save up all.
- 39:45[SPEAKER_11]: And just the beautiful in a go, you keep using that word.
- 39:49[SPEAKER_11]: I do not think it means what you think it means.
- 39:52[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, it's so great.
- 39:54[SPEAKER_11]: You didn't like my accent there.
- 39:57[SPEAKER_13]: Because you make him deeper and he's not deep.
- 39:59[SPEAKER_13]: I couldn't do I couldn't.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, you'll keep you seeing that word It's more it's a questioning, right?
- 40:05[SPEAKER_13]: You're right.
- 40:05[SPEAKER_13]: No, you're right.
- 40:06[SPEAKER_13]: But it's a questioning That's what he's doing is like he's literally trying to understand why the scene he's using that word Which is what's so great about it
- 40:13[SPEAKER_11]: Well, this is what I mean by, and whether when we say smarter not smart, is that he's pros, the wheels are processing, he doesn't just go urinating it, right?
- 40:20[SPEAKER_11]: He goes, he's always trying to help it, you know, yeah, it's right, and what makes him endearing.
- 40:30[SPEAKER_11]: And then, Visini gives his orders, Fezic you grab the girl, you stay here, if he falls great, if not the sword.
- 40:36[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_11]: And that's where we hear the first time where Indigo says, I do him, I do him left
- 40:43[SPEAKER_11]: If not, it's over too quickly.
- 40:44[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 40:45[SPEAKER_13]: And then it goes, have it your way.
- 40:47[SPEAKER_13]: I love that.
- 40:48[SPEAKER_13]: There's all those little moments of the scene either.
- 40:49[SPEAKER_13]: Just brilliant at Wallace Shondas.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_13]: Oh, have it your way.
- 40:53[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, it's brilliant.
- 40:54[SPEAKER_11]: And now we're on the top of the, and it goes on the top of the cliff waiting for the guy to get the top, he doesn't like waiting.
- 41:01[SPEAKER_11]: No, and he says, very impatient.
- 41:03[SPEAKER_13]: Well, listen, Latinos are impatient.
- 41:05[SPEAKER_10]: That's right, right now.
- 41:06[SPEAKER_13]: We just want, we want, we want it.
- 41:08[SPEAKER_13]: And so I love this moment because it's so true and he comes up with these because he's at first he's trying to be like, uh, I don't suppose you could like he's trying to be nice to him but it's to get what he wants eventually but then eventually he says like what throw the rope down so I'll give you my word as a spander and he says, I don't know, I've trusted, I've known too many spander, it was just brilliant.
- 41:28[SPEAKER_13]: And then finally he's mentioned, it's the first time he mentions his father.
- 41:31[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 41:31[SPEAKER_13]: It's brilliant.
- 41:32[SPEAKER_13]: It's the perfect time to mention it and Rob Riner does a
- 41:37[SPEAKER_08]: I swear on the soul of my father, Domingo Montoya, you will reach the top of life, throw me the robe.
- 41:45[SPEAKER_08]: It's just brilliant.
- 41:46[SPEAKER_11]: Well, when you mention politeness, one of the keys to the scene is their politeness.
- 41:49[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 41:50[SPEAKER_11]: Is that they're both being very, I don't want to bother you.
- 41:52[SPEAKER_11]: Right.
- 41:54[SPEAKER_11]: And then the man and black on the cliff saying, you know, this is sort of difficult.
- 42:01[SPEAKER_11]: They're just being very polite to each other because he throws the rope down, he helps him up, and the man in black is a meeting, he's getting ready, and he's sorting again, politeness, no, no, no, you take a rest, get ready, and they sit down and now, Indigo tells the story of his father, the sword, and the six finger.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_13]: And that's a master actor, man.
- 42:19[SPEAKER_13]: And amidst all this story book fantasy, ridiculousness in a way,
- 42:24[SPEAKER_13]: Here comes the heart.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_13]: Here comes the heart.
- 42:27[SPEAKER_13]: And is this why he's my favorite.
- 42:28[SPEAKER_13]: He's the heart of the movie.
- 42:29[SPEAKER_13]: The romance is the romance and true love.
- 42:31[SPEAKER_13]: And that's beautiful, obviously.
- 42:33[SPEAKER_13]: But the heart, the weight of the movie, the emotional resonance of the movie, is his journey.
- 42:38[SPEAKER_11]: No question about it.
- 42:39[SPEAKER_11]: I totally agree.
- 42:40[SPEAKER_11]: I love Wesley.
- 42:41[SPEAKER_11]: He's a great, great character.
- 42:43[SPEAKER_11]: I love him.
- 42:44[SPEAKER_11]: But it part of it's the, you know, the swordsmanship and all that other stuff in it goes great.
- 42:48[SPEAKER_11]: And this is one of those cases where the book is great because in the book, you see the whole story of him and his father in the 6th century.
- 42:57[SPEAKER_11]: You go through the whole thing and you go through the whole story of him studying fencing and the journeys you went on.
- 43:03[SPEAKER_11]: And none of that gets told to the man in black in the book because you just see it all.
- 43:08[SPEAKER_11]: And the brilliance of going, no, this is going to be a fairly short story I'm gonna tell to the man in black, is so dramatic in a film in a way that it isn't in a book and vice versa.
- 43:17[SPEAKER_09]: And what does he say at the end of the story?
- 43:30[SPEAKER_11]: And at first, when Mandy Petiquin read the script, he said, and saw what happens with this line, he's like, that is so silly.
- 43:37[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 43:37[SPEAKER_11]: And then, of course, it's the most famous line in the film.
- 43:41[SPEAKER_13]: Possibly.
- 43:41[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 43:42[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 43:43[SPEAKER_11]: I mean, it is such a huge thing.
- 43:46[SPEAKER_13]: But I love that he immediately switches.
- 43:48[SPEAKER_13]: And that's what's the brilliance of this scene is that he has this incredibly poetic, novel, but moment of this heartbreaking thing that he's going to say.
- 43:57[SPEAKER_13]: And you start to cheer for him.
- 44:00[SPEAKER_13]: But it's been 20 years, I've started to lose faith in it, not so it can really, it's just a great comedic moment to counter what's happening, what there's other nobility in him, this realistic situation, to this realism, to the situation that is frustrating him, which I love.
- 44:15[SPEAKER_11]: Well, and we really like this guy.
- 44:17[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 44:17[SPEAKER_11]: And this is the thing, it was very interesting, because they stand up there about the duel.
- 44:21[SPEAKER_11]: And my son got a little worried, we were watching today, and he leaned into me and said, which one of them dies?
- 44:28[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, yeah.
- 44:28[SPEAKER_11]: And that's what's doing so well in the movie because they stand up.
- 44:31[SPEAKER_07]: And Indigo says,
- 44:40[SPEAKER_11]: And then we go into what is written in the script was written as the greatest sword fight ever felt.
- 44:46[SPEAKER_14]: Wow.
- 44:47[SPEAKER_11]: So that's a lot of pressure when you set out to do the greatest sword fight ever felt.
- 44:51[SPEAKER_11]: And it is, in my opinion, one of the greatest short fight ever.
- 44:55[SPEAKER_11]: I'm not going to say, like, if I were on a top 10 show, what I put this at my top 10, I don't know.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_11]: But it would be in my list.
- 45:02[SPEAKER_11]: It would be in my note 10.
- 45:03[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 45:04[SPEAKER_11]: And so we got to talk about the sword fight a little bit.
- 45:06[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, sure.
- 45:07[SPEAKER_11]: So first of all,
- 45:08[SPEAKER_11]: They, you know, we did the matrix, we talked about how long they had to train to do that.
- 45:12[SPEAKER_11]: This is the same thing.
- 45:14[SPEAKER_11]: It would, I think, mean to begin to train eight months.
- 45:16[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, carry always train six months.
- 45:18[SPEAKER_11]: And the people they trained with are Peter Diamond and Bob Anderson.
- 45:22[SPEAKER_11]: Okay, Bob Anderson, he doubled Arrow Flynn.
- 45:26[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, he doubled Darth Vader.
- 45:28[SPEAKER_11]: He did the Darth Vader sword fights not only that, highlander he choreographed.
- 45:33[SPEAKER_11]: He core and he was even choreographing and being Vigo Mortensen's coach in Lord of the Rings.
- 45:39[SPEAKER_11]: That's 50 years of sword choreography.
- 45:41[SPEAKER_11]: That's a lot.
- 45:42[SPEAKER_11]: Peter Diamond, he's the Tuscan Raider that shakes his weapon over Luke Skywalker.
- 45:47[SPEAKER_11]: Peter Diamond is climbing on the truck in Raiders the Lost Ark.
- 45:53[SPEAKER_11]: Peter Diamond also did some of Darth Vader's swordwork.
- 45:56[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, like these are two of the greatest, I mean, you go back to Arrow Flynn from Arrow Flynn through Star Wars, Highlander, Lord of the Rings, like this is, you just can't get better than that pedigree.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_11]: Not only did they have to teach these two guys who had zero, zero fencing experience, how to fence, they had to teach him how to fence left-handed
- 46:17[SPEAKER_11]: That is really, really hard, which comes into play.
- 46:19[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 46:21[SPEAKER_11]: And so they trained all this time every single day, if in addition to eight months before they started their training, every single day, in-between takes their practicing, practicing, practicing, chooses a swordfight.
- 46:31[SPEAKER_11]: And then, normally when we do this podcast, I try to tell the behind-the-scenes stories when they happen in the film.
- 46:38[SPEAKER_11]: And now I'm not going to do that, because there's something that happened for that involved scenes later on, but affected this, which is,
- 46:46[SPEAKER_11]: Andre the giant had a big ATV, he used to drive around in and he drove ATVs on his farm in France and he's very comfortable with and he kept pushing Carialways, trialed the ATV, trialed, trialed, trialed, trialed, trialed.
- 46:57[SPEAKER_11]: And he's like, no, no, I don't need to.
- 46:58[SPEAKER_11]: And finally, he said, come on, it'll be fun.
- 47:01[SPEAKER_11]: Carialways have no experience driving these things at all, hops on what has to be like a ginormous one.
- 47:06[SPEAKER_11]: to carry under the giant round, drives a little way, loses control, jams his big toe between the clutch and the pedal, and bends it 90 degrees, breaking it.
- 47:17[SPEAKER_11]: Holy fuck.
- 47:18[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, like literally look down at your toe and it's pony to a 90 degree angle away from the rest of your foul.
- 47:24[SPEAKER_11]: tries to lie about it says don't tell Rob don't tell Rob because he's like I'm going to be fired.
- 47:28[SPEAKER_11]: This is the most important job ever had.
- 47:30[SPEAKER_11]: I've just I have to do the swordfight.
- 47:31[SPEAKER_11]: I've fucked everything up.
- 47:32[SPEAKER_11]: Don't tell Rob kids the whole cast to inspire not to tell him.
- 47:35[SPEAKER_11]: And it's actually in the scenes where he and Buttercup are running towards the fire swamp.
- 47:40[SPEAKER_11]: That's when this actually happened.
- 47:41[SPEAKER_11]: But this happened before a month before the swordfight.
- 47:45[SPEAKER_10]: Okay.
- 47:45[SPEAKER_11]: So we get to the scene the fire swamp will talk about what he was actually doing to get away with this.
- 47:49[SPEAKER_11]: But
- 47:52[SPEAKER_11]: before having to shoot this thing, he did get back to health fortunately, but it's like he practiced the sword fight sitting down for three, four weeks.
- 48:00[SPEAKER_11]: Wow.
- 48:01[SPEAKER_11]: This couldn't walk, right?
- 48:02[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 48:04[SPEAKER_11]: Okay, the sword fight.
- 48:05[SPEAKER_11]: They practiced a lot.
- 48:06[SPEAKER_11]: We got that point.
- 48:08[SPEAKER_11]: We talked about how sword fights tell stories.
- 48:11[SPEAKER_11]: And this one tells such a great story because the first moment is them testing each other out.
- 48:16[SPEAKER_09]: Thank you.
- 48:18[SPEAKER_11]: And there's this great moment where they do a
- 48:28[SPEAKER_11]: and Mandy looks at the man-a-block and smiles, because he's like, oh, you can fence.
- 48:37[SPEAKER_11]: But you get the feeling of I've waited so long for someone who could do this.
- 48:41[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 48:43[SPEAKER_11]: And as they're fighting back and forth, they're so... You know they know it so well because they can do dialogue.
- 48:48[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 48:49[SPEAKER_05]: You're using Vanessa's face against me, huh?
- 48:52[SPEAKER_05]: I thought it fitting, considering the rocky terrain.
- 48:54[SPEAKER_05]: That's really, you must respect me to attack with Capapara!
- 48:57[SPEAKER_05]: Naturally, but I find it typical cancer side, Capapara.
- 49:00[SPEAKER_05]: Don't you?
- 49:02[SPEAKER_11]: which by the way, those are real swordsmen, Kappa Fowl, Kappa Fowl, those are actual books on fent from great fenders throughout history.
- 49:09[SPEAKER_11]: They are not bullshit.
- 49:10[SPEAKER_11]: Those are the real experts of fencing with all these, and those are real defenses.
- 49:14[SPEAKER_11]: Like Goldman did the research on those.
- 49:15[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 49:16[SPEAKER_11]: Up and down the hills and one other thing that happened when they were practicing doing the choreography, they get very close to the shoot like the two weeks away.
- 49:23[SPEAKER_11]: And as they practice, you get faster and faster and faster.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 49:27[SPEAKER_11]: By the time they presented to Rob, okay, here is the choreography.
- 49:30[SPEAKER_11]: It had shrunk from four minutes down to a minute and a half.
- 49:34[SPEAKER_11]: Because they were so fast, right?
- 49:35[SPEAKER_11]: And Rob said that's not enough.
- 49:37[SPEAKER_11]: And they went, oh shit.
- 49:38[SPEAKER_11]: And like in the last two weeks, they added an extra minute and a half.
- 49:41[SPEAKER_11]: Wow, of stuff.
- 49:43[SPEAKER_11]: He took eight months to get up that first minute and a half and two weeks to the next minute and a half.
- 49:46[SPEAKER_11]: and they're going up and down levels and that's really hard to do all the fencing gift dialogue and go up and I'm an even surface.
- 49:54[SPEAKER_11]: They get to the edge, man, you can't get in a little bit in trouble and he says, I admit it, you are better than I am.
- 50:01[SPEAKER_04]: The noise, smiley.
- 50:02[SPEAKER_04]: Because I know something, you don't know.
- 50:04[SPEAKER_04]: And what is that?
- 50:05[SPEAKER_04]: I am not a fan of it.
- 50:08[SPEAKER_11]: I can remember being in the fear.
- 50:10[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, that's smiling, yeah.
- 50:12[SPEAKER_11]: And now, it's starting to look like the man in Blacks in trouble.
- 50:15[SPEAKER_11]: Pinned against the wall, the walls crumbly were on the cliff.
- 50:18[SPEAKER_04]: You're amazing.
- 50:19[SPEAKER_04]: You oughta be up to point the ears.
- 50:22[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, this is something I want to tell you.
- 50:24[SPEAKER_04]: Tell me.
- 50:26[SPEAKER_07]: I'm not left handed either.
- 50:31[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, and now he starts pushing back and does an immediate disarmament sort of straight up in the air.
- 50:38[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, and then wait, wait, wait, catch it.
- 50:40[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, which of course is there's a crewman up above on a rafter who catches one sort and drops another right into his hand.
- 50:47[SPEAKER_11]: And then, uh, then, uh, then it gets disarmed again, thrown down.
- 50:52[SPEAKER_11]: We do this.
- 50:53[SPEAKER_11]: This is where it gets a little bit silly.
- 50:54[SPEAKER_13]: I think it's brilliant.
- 50:56[SPEAKER_11]: The whole, yeah, the bars.
- 50:58[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, there's a gymnastics high bar there.
- 51:02[SPEAKER_11]: In a go kind of swings down, grabs a sword, and then the man in black throws a sword.
- 51:07[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, yeah.
- 51:11[SPEAKER_11]: jumps on does the full swing over does a flip lands picks up his sword as smooth as can be and I love the drum roll before he's Yes, this is spread yes, holy as the element of yes, the full the ridiculous of it and those moments are the only moments that are stuntmen
- 51:26[SPEAKER_11]: the whole sort of fight is them except for the little acrobatic moments.
- 51:31[SPEAKER_13]: Then I love this exchange when he adds more humor to the film and also to their relationship as characters, which we'll find out later when they come back together because he says to him, I mean, who are you?
- 51:41[SPEAKER_13]: And he says, you know, I'm no one a consequence, and he's, I must know, get used to this importance.
- 51:46[UNKNOWN]: Okay.
- 51:46[SPEAKER_13]: I love the OK.
- 51:48[SPEAKER_13]: The OK is brilliant.
- 51:49[SPEAKER_13]: The OK is everything.
- 51:50[SPEAKER_11]: The OK is improv.
- 51:51[SPEAKER_13]: Oh, good.
- 51:51[SPEAKER_11]: The OK is Mandy.
- 51:53[SPEAKER_11]: So brilliant.
- 51:54[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 51:54[SPEAKER_11]: It's so brilliant.
- 51:55[SPEAKER_11]: It is so great.
- 51:56[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 51:56[SPEAKER_11]: Because that's his character.
- 51:57[SPEAKER_11]: That's just the truck.
- 51:58[SPEAKER_11]: I love it.
- 51:58[SPEAKER_11]: Because good.
- 51:59[SPEAKER_11]: You said I haven't hurt.
- 51:59[SPEAKER_11]: He's not even hurt.
- 52:00[SPEAKER_11]: He's more like, OK. That's a few say so.
- 52:03[SPEAKER_11]: This last bit of swordsmanship between the two of them is crazy and this is the thing where maybe in the kind of geek that I am I've rewound.
- 52:10[SPEAKER_11]: I've slow mode.
- 52:11[SPEAKER_11]: I've watched it.
- 52:12[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, yeah, there's a moment in it So so in a go does a hand exchange where you switch it from left hand to right hand and back Which is really good.
- 52:20[SPEAKER_11]: He's spinning around and there's kind of but between the legs and a jump over the thing which is really hard Then there's a moment where Carry always
- 52:27[SPEAKER_11]: It's almost invisible, it happens so fast.
- 52:29[SPEAKER_11]: Throws the sword from his right hand up to his left hand, or might be his left hand up to his right hand.
- 52:35[SPEAKER_11]: And it's so between blocks, like blocks with his left, then throws it up to his right and blocks with his right.
- 52:40[SPEAKER_11]: And it's so smooth and elegant, it's an amazing little bit of trickery.
- 52:45[SPEAKER_11]: You know, that's just so, you know, that's only comes with.
- 52:48[SPEAKER_11]: hours and hours, thousands of hours of practicing that one little silly thing.
- 52:51[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 52:52[SPEAKER_11]: And then the very end, I don't actually quite own.
- 52:54[SPEAKER_11]: There's also one moment, by the way, there are two moments in.
- 52:56[SPEAKER_11]: I don't love one is there's a repeated action, which is he, uh, many picking picking backs up to sort of a posey moment and it sort of stops and then it starts again and you see him go through that exact motion again.
- 53:09[SPEAKER_11]: Oh wow.
- 53:09[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, so that bugs me a little bit and the final spinning around that he can't block that bugs me a little bit.
- 53:14[SPEAKER_11]: Okay.
- 53:14[SPEAKER_11]: But that's probably what keeps it from being my favorite certified of all time.
- 53:18[SPEAKER_11]: But, uh, any go gets disarmed?
- 53:21[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 53:21[SPEAKER_11]: And then things he's gonna die.
- 53:23[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 53:24[SPEAKER_13]: Kill me quickly.
- 53:26[SPEAKER_07]: Kill me quickly.
- 53:28[SPEAKER_07]: I will soon destroy a stained glass window as now it's like yourself.
- 53:31[SPEAKER_07]: However, since I can't have you following me there.
- 53:35[SPEAKER_11]: And this is what, and it solves the problem that my son had, which one of these guys is gonna die, answer neither.
- 53:41[SPEAKER_11]: Because we love them both, say, knocks him out.
- 53:43[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 53:44[SPEAKER_13]: Or as you conveniently said, your son, he's just asleep.
- 53:46[SPEAKER_13]: He's just asleep.
- 53:49[SPEAKER_18]: Yeah.
- 53:49[SPEAKER_11]: What's hard to explain?
- 53:50[SPEAKER_11]: It's hard to explain.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_11]: Not knocking something out.
- 53:52[SPEAKER_11]: Really?
- 53:53[SPEAKER_11]: Well, you're in a middle of a movie in the dark.
- 53:55[SPEAKER_11]: I sleep was easier.
- 53:56[SPEAKER_11]: That's fair.
- 53:57[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 53:57[SPEAKER_11]: And how does Fesini feel about this?
- 54:00[SPEAKER_11]: Ain't conceivable.
- 54:00[SPEAKER_11]: In conceivable.
- 54:02[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 54:03[SPEAKER_11]: So now he's going to have Fesic kill him your way Right my way so he gives him these instructions get a big rock wait here when he just head appears Hit him with the rock that way.
- 54:16[SPEAKER_11]: It's not very sportsman like if he's here's a question Do you understand everything under the giant said yeah if you've seen it the first time you think you did I did the first time Everything I had no problems understanding him
- 54:29[SPEAKER_13]: I it's one where I wonder I put I understand him now, but it's only also because I was my parents had thick Spanish accents and not then.
- 54:37[SPEAKER_13]: Great is Spanish, but he's European, he's French, my mind had been trained to try to understand people with accents speaking English since birth.
- 54:46[SPEAKER_13]: Right.
- 54:46[SPEAKER_13]: So for me it was easy to understand.
- 54:48[SPEAKER_13]: Right.
- 54:49[SPEAKER_11]: So Wesley's coming up the hill on just as he comes around the corner, Andre throws the rock, which explodes, which is great, it's a good sound effect, and startles Wesley, but he doesn't want to hit him with a rock.
- 55:02[SPEAKER_11]: No, I love their exchange.
- 55:04[SPEAKER_11]: This is not sportsmen like.
- 55:05[SPEAKER_17]: So what happens now?
- 55:07[SPEAKER_17]: We face the chatter as God intended.
- 55:09[SPEAKER_17]: Sportsmen like.
- 55:11[SPEAKER_17]: No tricks, no weapons, security and security are wrong.
- 55:16[SPEAKER_07]: You mean?
- 55:17[SPEAKER_07]: You'll put down your rock now, put down my sword and we're trying to kill each other like civilized people.
- 55:22[SPEAKER_13]: Yes.
- 55:23[SPEAKER_13]: And he says, you know, I feel like you've got a bit of an advantage or anything.
- 55:27[SPEAKER_10]: He can fight us.
- 55:28[SPEAKER_10]: Yeah.
- 55:28[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 55:29[SPEAKER_13]: And this is an interesting Tuesday because this is a nice change in physics character.
- 55:32[SPEAKER_13]: Because physics initially is, you know, he can be browbeaten by Vasini.
- 55:39[SPEAKER_13]: He's not considered intelligent.
- 55:42[SPEAKER_13]: But he very much commands that scene with the man of black with Wesley, because he says to him, I didn't have to miss.
- 55:49[SPEAKER_13]: Right.
- 55:49[SPEAKER_13]: I could kill you now if you like.
- 55:50[SPEAKER_13]: Like there's there's not that sense of stupidity to him in those moments.
- 55:53[SPEAKER_13]: He's very in command of what's happening.
- 55:55[SPEAKER_13]: So he has this gear in him, but
- 55:58[SPEAKER_13]: This, what the scene he's done has played to both their insecurities, which is why he keeps Montoya in ego and, and, uh, physique under his thumb, because he knows how to play them as a good leader should.
- 56:09[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 56:09[SPEAKER_11]: Well, and, you know, this is the, there's a difference between intelligence and wisdom, and there's a difference between intelligence and good and evil.
- 56:17[SPEAKER_10]: Yes.
- 56:17[SPEAKER_11]: The big thing about physique is, he's a good guy.
- 56:20[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, he's a good guy.
- 56:21[SPEAKER_11]: They don't want to be bad guys.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_11]: They are naturally good guys.
- 56:23[SPEAKER_11]: Just a circumstances.
- 56:24[SPEAKER_11]: Only jobs they can make.
- 56:26[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 56:26[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 56:26[SPEAKER_11]: It's tough to get work as a giant.
- 56:28[SPEAKER_13]: I'm sure it's tough to get work as an event seeking the Spaniard.
- 56:32[SPEAKER_11]: This is so I've heard, and by the way, this wrestling thing, yeah, this is one where I'll say, this is better in the book.
- 56:39[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, I don't love this.
- 56:40[SPEAKER_11]: It's okay.
- 56:40[SPEAKER_11]: Okay, you know, and part of it is is that Andre Giants in a lot of pain.
- 56:45[SPEAKER_11]: So much so that like him carrying Wesley on his back, he couldn't do it.
- 56:50[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, well.
- 56:50[SPEAKER_11]: So what's actually happening if I understand it correctly is they built a ramp behind under the giant so that when he's moving forward and backwards, carry always actually has his feet on something and is skittling back and forth behind him.
- 57:03[SPEAKER_11]: So he's not putting all his weight on under the giant.
- 57:05[SPEAKER_11]: That's interesting.
- 57:06[SPEAKER_11]: That's what they said.
- 57:07[SPEAKER_11]: I don't quite understand how it works throughout, but yeah, he was in a lot of pain.
- 57:11[SPEAKER_11]: All those wrestlers are to it's brutal.
- 57:13[SPEAKER_11]: It's a brutal job.
- 57:14[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 57:15[SPEAKER_11]: The man black chokes him out and again a great parting line sleep well and dream of large women.
- 57:25[SPEAKER_11]: And off up the hill he goes to discover Vesini who's waiting for him.
- 57:30[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah and butter cup he's put out a nice spread.
- 57:32[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah he has cheese and everything.
- 57:34[SPEAKER_11]: Why?
- 57:34[SPEAKER_11]: Where did he get the cheese?
- 57:36[SPEAKER_13]: Where do you get the wine?
- 57:37[SPEAKER_11]: The Syrians always travel with cheese and wine.
- 57:39[SPEAKER_11]: Yes, that goes without saying.
- 57:40[SPEAKER_11]: Yes, my question is, before he knew that there was going to be a Battle of the Whits involving wine, why did he sit down and have wine poured?
- 57:48[SPEAKER_11]: Or wind out?
- 57:49[SPEAKER_11]: Who, Vesini?
- 57:50[SPEAKER_11]: Vesini.
- 57:51[SPEAKER_11]: I don't know.
- 57:51[SPEAKER_11]: It's a very strange.
- 57:52[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 57:53[SPEAKER_11]: And again, we have this set of, like, were you bested by Spaniard?
- 57:58[SPEAKER_11]: I can't compete with your physically, but you can't compete with me mentally, right?
- 58:02[SPEAKER_11]: It's a will have a Battle of the Whits.
- 58:06[SPEAKER_11]: You mean kids or not?
- 58:07[SPEAKER_13]: Plato's Socrates, Aristotle, Aristotle, I just love that lot.
- 58:12[SPEAKER_13]: And it got a great life in the theater.
- 58:14[SPEAKER_13]: It's a funny movie.
- 58:17[SPEAKER_13]: And we sit down and even then even him, you don't hate.
- 58:19[SPEAKER_11]: Because of these lines.
- 58:22[SPEAKER_11]: He's a bad person.
- 58:22[SPEAKER_11]: He's a bad person, he's a bad person.
- 58:23[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, I adore him.
- 58:24[SPEAKER_11]: I listen to it.
- 58:25[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 58:25[SPEAKER_11]: And we sit down and Wesley pulls out his vile.
- 58:29[SPEAKER_07]: Inhale this, but do not touch.
- 58:33[SPEAKER_07]: I smell nothing.
- 58:34[SPEAKER_07]: What you do not smell is called Iokane powder.
- 58:37[SPEAKER_07]: It is odorless, tasteless, dissolves instantly in liquid, and is among the more deadly poison is known to man.
- 58:43[SPEAKER_11]: And he's going to put the poison in one glass of wine, and Vasini has to figure out which one it is, and then they will drink, and the winner lives, and the other one is dead.
- 58:54[SPEAKER_11]: And then we get Wallace Sean's brain.
- 59:00[SPEAKER_11]: This is where I go, I look, I love Danny Divido.
- 59:03[SPEAKER_11]: Nobody, nobody can do this like Walsha.
- 59:06[SPEAKER_13]: Danny has a harder edge to him than Wallace does.
- 59:11[SPEAKER_13]: It's not that you can see films like Renaissance Man and enjoy Danny, and even when he's doing that character in taxi, he's still endearing in a way.
- 59:21[SPEAKER_13]: There's a level bonus to him, absolutely.
- 59:23[SPEAKER_13]: But he has a darker streak to him, a more people streak to him, and Wallace can't convey any of that.
- 59:28[SPEAKER_13]: which is why you enjoy him as an evil guy.
- 59:31[SPEAKER_13]: Even though he's an evil guy, you still enjoy him as endearing because, and you can buy this situation where he's just doing this whole litany of reasons why he's already figured it out, you know, and he hasn't at all.
- 59:43[SPEAKER_11]: Well, but it is hilarious.
- 59:46[SPEAKER_11]: And part of what's making it hilarious, by the way, is Kerry, always his reaction shot.
- 59:50[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 59:51[SPEAKER_11]: Are so good.
- 59:52[SPEAKER_11]: He's just smirk, just smirk, and you're watching this guy go through this thing.
- 59:55[SPEAKER_13]: Because he knows, yeah.
- 59:56[SPEAKER_11]: Way goes, he's winning.
- 59:57[SPEAKER_11]: And I would talk about what some of these things Wallace Sean said, but I know I'm gonna cut to it.
- 1:00:02[SPEAKER_11]: Okay, so I'm going to give you Wallace Sean.
- 1:00:05[SPEAKER_03]: You made your decision then?
- 1:00:07[SPEAKER_03]: Not remotely.
- 1:00:08[SPEAKER_03]: Because I, again, comes from Australia as everyone knows.
- 1:00:12[SPEAKER_03]: And Australia is entirely people with cripples.
- 1:00:14[SPEAKER_03]: And criminals are used to having people not trust them as you are not trusted by me, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you.
- 1:00:21[SPEAKER_03]: Truly, you have a dizzying intellect.
- 1:00:23[SPEAKER_03]: Wait till I get going?
- 1:00:25[SPEAKER_03]: Where was I?
- 1:00:26[SPEAKER_03]: Australia.
- 1:00:27[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, Australia.
- 1:00:28[SPEAKER_03]: And you must have suspected I would have known the powder's origin, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me.
- 1:00:33[SPEAKER_03]: You're just stalling now.
- 1:00:34[SPEAKER_03]: You'd like to think that wouldn't you?
- 1:00:37[SPEAKER_03]: You've beaten my giant, which means you're exceptionally strong.
- 1:00:40[SPEAKER_03]: So you could've put the poison in your own goblet, trusting on your strength to save you.
- 1:00:44[SPEAKER_03]: So I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you.
- 1:00:47[SPEAKER_03]: But you've also bested by Spaniard, which means you must have studied.
- 1:00:51[SPEAKER_03]: And instead, you must have learned that man is mortal.
- 1:00:54[SPEAKER_03]: So you would've put the poison as far from yourself as possible.
- 1:00:57[SPEAKER_03]: So I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me.
- 1:01:00[SPEAKER_03]: You're trying to trick me into giving away something.
- 1:01:03[SPEAKER_03]: as worked.
- 1:01:04[SPEAKER_03]: You've given everything away.
- 1:01:05[SPEAKER_03]: I know where the poison is.
- 1:01:07[SPEAKER_03]: Then make your choice.
- 1:01:08[SPEAKER_03]: Great will, and I choose what in the world can that be.
- 1:01:12[SPEAKER_13]: by the way, I use that line all the time with people when they, which one, when they start to get into something and they start like, it's, they start going to its myriad of thoughts that are like broken, run on sentences.
- 1:01:26[SPEAKER_13]: When they're done, I always go like, truly you have a dizzying intellect.
- 1:01:29[SPEAKER_13]: I say, all the time.
- 1:01:30[SPEAKER_13]: The Wesley line, yes.
- 1:01:32[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, because I use, you know, you fall into one of the classic blunders.
- 1:01:37[SPEAKER_03]: The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well known is this Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line
- 1:01:48[SPEAKER_13]: This whole idea, though, Steve, once again, this idea of where these lines coming from, oh, yeah, anacronistic.
- 1:01:54[SPEAKER_13]: Lay a horn Asia, that's a Vietnam joke.
- 1:01:55[SPEAKER_13]: Absolutely.
- 1:01:56[SPEAKER_13]: It's any number of things, joke, right?
- 1:01:58[SPEAKER_13]: Mongolia, who knows what the joke they're making?
- 1:02:00[SPEAKER_11]: I clearly was a Vietnam joke.
- 1:02:01[SPEAKER_11]: I became out in 1973, and all this is in the book.
- 1:02:04[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, I feel like it's been, yeah.
- 1:02:06[SPEAKER_11]: Today, it could be an Afghanistan joke, or it's easily, but the, yeah, it's totally, well, the whole thing isn't that, anacronistic.
- 1:02:13[SPEAKER_11]: Which I love.
- 1:02:14[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, what Walshon does is just amazing.
- 1:02:19[SPEAKER_11]: And then it climaxes with him saying, what in the world and Wesley turns and looks?
- 1:02:26[SPEAKER_11]: And he switches the glasses and then they drink.
- 1:02:30[SPEAKER_11]: And there's a little, are you gonna drink?
- 1:02:31[SPEAKER_11]: Are you gonna drink?
- 1:02:32[SPEAKER_11]: The man in black drinks, the scenic drinks, and then is mocking him and that's where this line is.
- 1:02:39[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:02:39[SPEAKER_11]: And then the laughter and then the death.
- 1:02:44[SPEAKER_11]: Which by the way, Rob Reiner demonstrated how to do that.
- 1:02:51[SPEAKER_11]: That was a Rob Reiner laugh, laugh, laugh, laugh, die.
- 1:02:54[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:02:55[SPEAKER_13]: It was very well done.
- 1:02:56[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:02:57[SPEAKER_11]: And I realize something that I have done is that for those of you who haven't haven't watched the movie, I have repeatedly given something away.
- 1:03:07[SPEAKER_11]: And it brings up an important question.
- 1:03:09[SPEAKER_11]: Is there any time watching this film that you as the audience watching the first time?
- 1:03:14[SPEAKER_11]: Don't know that the man in black is Wesley.
- 1:03:21[SPEAKER_13]: As soon as he had the fight with, I remember knowing it was him as soon as they had the the sword fight.
- 1:03:27[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:03:27[SPEAKER_13]: Because of the voice.
- 1:03:29[SPEAKER_13]: Right.
- 1:03:30[SPEAKER_13]: Kerry I was even though he said he's only ever said as you wish.
- 1:03:35[SPEAKER_13]: There's the timber of his voice
- 1:03:39[SPEAKER_11]: Well, there's also this thing about story structure, where the guy went off and died, and now this guy shows up, how many characters in this movie are gonna be?
- 1:03:48[SPEAKER_11]: You know what I mean?
- 1:03:48[SPEAKER_11]: Like, that's gotta be, and it's an interesting thing of where, you know, this is a fairy tale.
- 1:03:55[SPEAKER_13]: This is supposed to fulfill our expectations.
- 1:03:59[SPEAKER_13]: And what's interesting, Steve, is you have to cast this correctly because these people have very limited screen time.
- 1:04:05[SPEAKER_13]: So in that limited screen time, you have to be immediately attached to them.
- 1:04:08[SPEAKER_11]: uh... with good or evil you have to be immediately touched them um... one thing we have to get to score it through the movie exactly and then they come back one thing we haven't mentioned is that as we leave leave each of these battles who was showing up at the previous battles but prince hopper dink the greatest hunter and all the land and i love this in a with hopper dink there's this moment where he is you know standing in their footprints figuring out the fencing all over both masters
- 1:04:38[SPEAKER_11]: You know, and then we get to the battle with a giant.
- 1:04:43[SPEAKER_11]: Someone is beaten a giant.
- 1:04:44[SPEAKER_11]: So, what is bested a giant?
- 1:04:45[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:04:46[SPEAKER_11]: And he's continually framing this as, oh, there's going to be hell-dipane gilder.
- 1:04:49[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, yeah.
- 1:04:50[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:04:50[SPEAKER_11]: For the other guards.
- 1:04:52[SPEAKER_11]: And then, and then, when he gets to Deb Visini, he picks up the vile, which as we know is totally odorless, and says, I okay.
- 1:05:00[SPEAKER_11]: I'd stick my life on this.
- 1:05:02[SPEAKER_13]: It's so great.
- 1:05:03[SPEAKER_11]: I love that.
- 1:05:03[SPEAKER_13]: all of it at work and once again you have to have the right actor to convey that kind of thing that doesn't seem stupid.
- 1:05:08[SPEAKER_13]: It seems totally perfect.
- 1:05:10[SPEAKER_11]: One thing I missed.
- 1:05:11[SPEAKER_11]: So after Vasini dies, buttercup who's been blindfolded through this whole thing says so all the time it was the glass in front of you that was poisoned and and Wesley reveals they were both poisoned.
- 1:05:26[SPEAKER_07]: I spent the last few years building up an immunity to I became powder.
- 1:05:30[SPEAKER_13]: How does she not know it's him?
- 1:05:32[SPEAKER_13]: It's a really good question, right?
- 1:05:33[SPEAKER_13]: If it's true love, you'll know immediately just the sound of his voice.
- 1:05:36[SPEAKER_11]: So what we'll tell you what William Goldman said was he was following Superman rules, which is that if part Kent can wear glasses and lowest doesn't know it's Superman, then this guy can wear a black mask.
- 1:05:47[SPEAKER_13]: By the way, one of the greatest meme jokes I ever saw was lowest laying, putting a picture up on Facebook.
- 1:05:55[SPEAKER_13]: I'm hurt with superannis.
- 1:05:57[SPEAKER_13]: Yes, I saw.
- 1:05:58[SPEAKER_13]: If you want to tag Clark and her reaction If you haven't seen this card just look panel cartoon go and find it.
- 1:06:05[SPEAKER_13]: It's I mean I laughed for 10 minutes the first time I saw it because it's so brilliant Just modern technology.
- 1:06:12[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, I
- 1:06:12[SPEAKER_11]: revealing what's something that's so obvious.
- 1:06:15[SPEAKER_11]: But it's not obvious to buttercoar and he drags her off.
- 1:06:18[SPEAKER_11]: They run off together.
- 1:06:19[SPEAKER_11]: And two things, one is she's scared of him and angry at him, right?
- 1:06:23[SPEAKER_11]: And two is he is horrible to her.
- 1:06:25[SPEAKER_11]: Kind of is.
- 1:06:26[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:06:27[SPEAKER_11]: And I don't know, life is a steep horse question.
- 1:06:29[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, is he mad at her like legitimate because he I was thinking this I was thinking about this raises hand to her man That's like here in 2017 that was a little weird to watch back the 80s because it's a fantastical movie I didn't it didn't bother me But like in 2017 like whoa, what is this message saying the kid you seeing this guy raises him well and he's particularly saying things There's punishment when a woman lies or like I know that women are like this.
- 1:06:52[SPEAKER_11]: There's some weird like
- 1:06:53[SPEAKER_11]: You know, and again, it's 2017, right, instead of 1987.
- 1:06:57[SPEAKER_11]: So I was thinking about the same thing.
- 1:06:59[SPEAKER_11]: I don't think it's consistent.
- 1:07:01[SPEAKER_11]: Because, yeah, his manner towards her after the reveal, right, is 100% lovey.
- 1:07:09[SPEAKER_11]: Yes, and his manner in this moment is like, are you trying to, are you actually pissed, or are you trying to test her in some way by pretending to be pissed?
- 1:07:18[SPEAKER_13]: I think he's pissed, I think he's angry, I think he's hurt.
- 1:07:21[SPEAKER_13]: And so he is, I don't think he would have struck her.
- 1:07:23[SPEAKER_13]: But then again, if they remember, he's been on a pirate ship for five years.
- 1:07:27[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 1:07:27[SPEAKER_13]: So that changes the person.
- 1:07:29[SPEAKER_13]: That changes the person.
- 1:07:29[SPEAKER_11]: But there's no evidence of that anywhere else in the film once it gets revealed.
- 1:07:32[SPEAKER_11]: Do you know what I mean?
- 1:07:33[SPEAKER_11]: He's just sweet.
- 1:07:34[SPEAKER_13]: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 1:07:37[SPEAKER_13]: a fighter and he wins and he's aggressively relentless to get what he wants and so why is he saving her how did he know she was being kidnapped how does he know any of this that's what's amazing true love right which we have got right true love but it's true love why's he angry
- 1:07:52[SPEAKER_11]: Well, that's what see I don't think it's consistent.
- 1:07:54[SPEAKER_11]: That's where I kind of go like I don't it's the one thing where I go I don't know if Carrie always was pushing too far.
- 1:07:59[SPEAKER_11]: That's what the script was doing or what because the if you was we never we don't go when I found out you're getting married I was really hurt.
- 1:08:07[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:08:08[SPEAKER_11]: We don't go there as soon as so what's going to happen is first she says hey my my print-on-partics will give you any kind of money and he mentions oh your true love is going to come save you and she goes I never said it was my true love is
- 1:08:20[SPEAKER_11]: And this gets into the, and he keeps kind of pushing and poking in this area.
- 1:08:24[SPEAKER_11]: Don't mock me.
- 1:08:25[SPEAKER_11]: Don't mock me.
- 1:08:26[SPEAKER_11]: Like you mock my pain once, never do it again.
- 1:08:28[SPEAKER_11]: And that gets to one of the great lines.
- 1:08:30[SPEAKER_11]: I say all the time, life is pain princess.
- 1:08:32[SPEAKER_11]: Anyone who tells you any different is selling something.
- 1:08:35[SPEAKER_11]: That's some heavy, because even though this is a very book story, that's what I'm saying.
- 1:08:38[SPEAKER_13]: That's some heavy stuff to say.
- 1:08:40[SPEAKER_13]: Throughout this whole film, there is a weight of realism to this fantastical story, always.
- 1:08:46[SPEAKER_11]: And then we find out that he's the Dred prior Roberts, and she realized you killed my love.
- 1:08:51[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, and this, by the way, is the scene where he has just broken his toe that day.
- 1:08:56[SPEAKER_11]: And if you watch him walk, he walks in this odd way, and then when he sits down, he does this weird leg extended out in front of you and kind of lowers himself, and then raises himself in this really odd way, because he can't walk.
- 1:09:07[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, how funny.
- 1:09:08[SPEAKER_11]: And you just knew you're an actor.
- 1:09:10[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:09:10[SPEAKER_11]: You imagine being an agony and having to be Wesley and multiple takes.
- 1:09:15[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, and on terrain.
- 1:09:17[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, not on a flat surface and not telling your director what that was going on.
- 1:09:21[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, and you're director enjoying your physical choices, I guess, because he didn't make him do all the takes for it.
- 1:09:25[SPEAKER_11]: Well, he said what Rob Reiner says is that he just thought, well, what an elegant way to sit down.
- 1:09:30[SPEAKER_11]: Amazing.
- 1:09:30[SPEAKER_11]: And then he found out.
- 1:09:32[SPEAKER_11]: And he called him over and just was like, why not tell me?
- 1:09:35[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:09:35[SPEAKER_11]: And Carrie was like, I was so scared.
- 1:09:37[SPEAKER_11]: And he was like, no, you're, you're Wesley.
- 1:09:40[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:09:40[SPEAKER_11]: Like what a wonderful thing to hear for you.
- 1:09:42[SPEAKER_11]: No, you're the guy.
- 1:09:43[SPEAKER_11]: your health is most important and yes we're going to have to work this out but you've messed up more by not telling me and you hurt hurt me yeah you know and they send them off in his manned black costume to the hospital and he's trying to explain to the doctor what happened to his toe.
- 1:09:58[SPEAKER_11]: And then there's this moment where they're right in the middle of the argument and she says, you know, that she wants him to die and then the horses appear and he turns to the horses and she says, you know, what's what's her long and die to for all I care.
- 1:10:12[SPEAKER_11]: You could die to for all I care and push us him and what does he say as he goes down the hill?
- 1:10:16[SPEAKER_11]: You wish, and what are one of the weirdest moments in film?
- 1:10:21[SPEAKER_11]: She says, oh, my sweet Wesley, and throws herself down the hill herself.
- 1:10:25[SPEAKER_11]: Great coming.
- 1:10:27[SPEAKER_11]: It's hilarious, right?
- 1:10:29[SPEAKER_11]: And the prince, uh, the goes like, oh, they disappeared.
- 1:10:33[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, which was great too, and that they're heading towards the fire swamp.
- 1:10:40[SPEAKER_11]: And now the mask has come off and now they're down being romantic together And this all this anger and stuff is gone.
- 1:10:47[SPEAKER_11]: It's gone.
- 1:10:47[SPEAKER_11]: It's gone.
- 1:10:48[SPEAKER_11]: Totally gone.
- 1:10:50[SPEAKER_11]: And of course, what do they do as soon as they see each other again is kiss?
- 1:10:53[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:10:53[SPEAKER_11]: What do we do as soon as they start kissing?
- 1:10:56[SPEAKER_12]: Oh, no.
- 1:10:57[SPEAKER_12]: No, please.
- 1:10:59[SPEAKER_20]: What is it?
- 1:11:00[SPEAKER_20]: What's the matter?
- 1:11:01[SPEAKER_12]: They're kissing again.
- 1:11:03[SPEAKER_12]: Do we have to hear the kissing bar?
- 1:11:05[SPEAKER_12]: So, I'm day, you mean I've mind so much.
- 1:11:09[SPEAKER_11]: This is an important thing, by the way, in storytelling, where if you have a multiple character story in multiple occasions, you have to check in.
- 1:11:15[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:11:15[SPEAKER_11]: If you left grandpa and Fred away too long, we're going to lose track of them.
- 1:11:20[SPEAKER_11]: And so it's important.
- 1:11:21[SPEAKER_11]: I think this is a check in.
- 1:11:22[SPEAKER_11]: I mean, it's fun too.
- 1:11:24[SPEAKER_11]: And we go into, and I love their friends says, let's get to that fire swamp part.
- 1:11:28[SPEAKER_11]: That sounds cool.
- 1:11:30[SPEAKER_11]: And we go into the fire swamp.
- 1:11:32[SPEAKER_11]: Um, this is all shot by the way in Shepard in studios in England.
- 1:11:35[SPEAKER_11]: Um, and, and this is the first sequence they shot in the film.
- 1:11:41[SPEAKER_11]: Um, and so Bill Goldman is there.
- 1:11:43[SPEAKER_11]: William Goldman screenwriter's there and apparently he's just terrible at being on set.
- 1:11:47[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, well, he gets very stressed out and uncomfortable and difficult because he's somewhat neurotic.
- 1:11:51[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, no, you don't say.
- 1:11:54[SPEAKER_11]: Again, I reference you to go back to the all the presents man podcast.
- 1:11:59[SPEAKER_11]: Um, uh, he's got a woman coming to a library.
- 1:12:02[SPEAKER_11]: I'll tell you that right now, verbal woman at least.
- 1:12:04[SPEAKER_11]: Um, and uh, uh, there's a moment where there's these popping sounds and there's fire that shoots up and butter cups dress gets caught on fire and Wesley has to put it out.
- 1:12:13[SPEAKER_11]: Well, they're shooting that and Goldman's on set and the fire comes up and her dress comes out fire and Goldman yells, uh, Robin, she's on fire.
- 1:12:19[SPEAKER_11]: You got to put her out.
- 1:12:20[SPEAKER_11]: It ruins the take.
- 1:12:21[SPEAKER_11]: Oh my god.
- 1:12:21[SPEAKER_11]: Because he got so stressed out.
- 1:12:23[SPEAKER_11]: I mean, he wrote the book.
- 1:12:24[SPEAKER_11]: He knows what's going to happen.
- 1:12:26[SPEAKER_11]: But he was just too stressed.
- 1:12:27[SPEAKER_11]: Right.
- 1:12:27[SPEAKER_11]: Finally, he had to just turn away and not watch his favorite film because he was too nervous.
- 1:12:31[SPEAKER_11]: And then we hear the story of how he became the dreadpired Roberts.
- 1:12:36[SPEAKER_11]: Which is that he did get captured.
- 1:12:38[SPEAKER_11]: He was about to be killed and then he said this Please and talked about his true love and the pirate said well, I've never had a valet And so you know, do some work almost like we kill you in the morning and almost like we kill you in a morning It's a thing I say to people all the time.
- 1:12:54[SPEAKER_11]: Oh great good to all the time Well people who know the movie right or if it nice work get some rest almost like we kill you in the morning
- 1:13:01[SPEAKER_11]: And he does that for a long time, at which point he finds out that this is not the dreadpired Roberts and that it's a title that's been passed down and he's going to be the next dreadpired.
- 1:13:10[SPEAKER_11]: Great reveals.
- 1:13:10[SPEAKER_11]: It's really great.
- 1:13:11[SPEAKER_11]: And we're kind of glossing over the fact that they do kill people, they don't take prisoners, which means that the guy that was Wesley's buddy and presumably Wesley as well has been
- 1:13:23[SPEAKER_11]: not taking prisoners and killing people for a long time and so has Wesley and so is Wesley yeah we're to believe the dreadpires of the trip are irreversible but like in all good fairy tales we're not going to worry about this right and we can't worry about this anyway because as we're finishing the story buttercup falls through the lightning sand and disappears
- 1:13:41[SPEAKER_13]: But before she does that, he says, now that we're together, oh, I'm going to retire.
- 1:13:45[SPEAKER_13]: Will retire is going to retire.
- 1:13:46[SPEAKER_11]: That's right.
- 1:13:47[SPEAKER_13]: He else.
- 1:13:47[SPEAKER_13]: So he's done with that life immediately because he got her, he's back to other with her.
- 1:13:51[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:13:52[SPEAKER_11]: So she jumped, dropped down the lightning sand.
- 1:13:54[SPEAKER_11]: He dives in after.
- 1:13:55[SPEAKER_11]: And as they're down there, we get the first shot of our third danger of the fire swamp, the ROUSs.
- 1:14:02[SPEAKER_13]: Right.
- 1:14:02[SPEAKER_13]: This was interesting watching the movie today because I guess maybe in my head I'd forgotten the sequence of things because he climbs out of the thing with Robin Wright and sees the world and always found it weird and then says when she asks him about like is he saying that to make her feel better and
- 1:14:19[SPEAKER_13]: And then the rodent jumps on everybody says like, you know, I don't run some unusual sizes.
- 1:14:23[SPEAKER_13]: I don't think they exist.
- 1:14:24[SPEAKER_13]: And then boom, they jump.
- 1:14:25[SPEAKER_11]: He saw them.
- 1:14:26[SPEAKER_11]: I think it's really weird.
- 1:14:27[SPEAKER_11]: I don't think it works.
- 1:14:28[SPEAKER_11]: Okay.
- 1:14:29[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:14:29[SPEAKER_11]: I agree.
- 1:14:29[SPEAKER_11]: It's always similar to me because it's not.
- 1:14:31[SPEAKER_11]: I understand his beatwork of, I don't want to scare you, right?
- 1:14:34[SPEAKER_11]: But I don't understand him not getting his sort out and getting in a defensive position, right, just in case.
- 1:14:39[SPEAKER_11]: Kind of just ignores them.
- 1:14:40[SPEAKER_11]: Right.
- 1:14:40[SPEAKER_11]: And these are big rat kind of things that are some of them are just stuffed animals, and two of them are ones that little people run around in, apparently there were two different guys, one guy who was good at sort of the intricate work, and but couldn't move very fast, and one guy who moved really fast, and they needed the guy who moved really fast to start the fight scene, but he was arrested for drunk driving the night before.
- 1:15:03[SPEAKER_11]: because he was out on a bit of a bender and he's trying to explain to the police no no you have to let me go I'm in this movie I have to get to set in two hours oh you're in a movie sure what are you doing it's like well I play a big rap and so they had to stop set and and and Rob and his producer had a co-bale him out to get him on set to do this fight scene while extremely hungover
- 1:15:24[SPEAKER_13]: This is why, this is why people talk about movie-making as an insane experience, because you never know what's gonna happen.
- 1:15:32[SPEAKER_13]: And when you let people in, people leave your set, you don't know what they're going to do, and if they're going to actually show up the next day, you just never know.
- 1:15:38[SPEAKER_11]: But we have a big fight with ROUS, and this is one two where I go, I wish they'd made Robin right fight more.
- 1:15:45[SPEAKER_11]: You know what I mean?
- 1:15:45[SPEAKER_11]: Like, and she's very princess.
- 1:15:47[SPEAKER_11]: Very dance-able interest.
- 1:15:48[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, very much so.
- 1:15:49[SPEAKER_11]: And again, it's 30 years ago.
- 1:15:50[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:15:51[SPEAKER_11]: But now, like, she picks up a lot of time at this point.
- 1:15:53[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 1:15:53[SPEAKER_13]: The stories women wrote in terms of the stresses.
- 1:15:55[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:15:56[SPEAKER_11]: And there's, and we hear the popping sound, he holds her over to the flames, and we get the ROUS killed, and we come out of the fire swamp, and are immediately trapped.
- 1:16:05[SPEAKER_07]: So Renda.
- 1:16:06[SPEAKER_07]: I mean, wish to threaten it to me.
- 1:16:08[SPEAKER_07]: But I want to accept.
- 1:16:09[SPEAKER_11]: And as Wesley is talking to Prince Humperdink, defiantly, defiantly, like death first, we'll go live in the fire swamp.
- 1:16:18[SPEAKER_11]: Buttercup starts noticing four guys with crossbows that are surrounding them.
- 1:16:22[SPEAKER_11]: And when he says death first, she says, will you promise not to hurt him?
- 1:16:27[SPEAKER_11]: which stops the whole confrontation, stops the whole thing.
- 1:16:29[SPEAKER_11]: And I love that, that company goes, what was that?
- 1:16:32[SPEAKER_11]: And Wesley goes, what was that?
- 1:16:33[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, it's a great little comic beat.
- 1:16:35[SPEAKER_13]: But she's the smart one in the situation because his male vanity wants him to fight all these guys and he could lose and get buttercup killed.
- 1:16:48[SPEAKER_13]: on Crossfire or whatever, and she says, she does the smart thing, which is sometimes it's not always the smart thing to fight.
- 1:16:54[SPEAKER_13]: Well, she's smart and naive, she's both.
- 1:16:57[SPEAKER_11]: Well, naive eventually, but because she doesn't understand that this is the bad guy.
- 1:17:00[SPEAKER_13]: Who writes?
- 1:17:01[SPEAKER_11]: Fair, fair, fair, fair, fair.
- 1:17:02[SPEAKER_11]: But yes, and she's doing the sacrifice.
- 1:17:04[SPEAKER_11]: She's saying, I can't live with you dying again.
- 1:17:08[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 1:17:09[SPEAKER_11]: I would rather marry this guy who I don't love than see you die again, which is great.
- 1:17:14[SPEAKER_11]: Um, so they go off and now we get to talk about another actor who he have not talked about.
- 1:17:22[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, because we've seen him, this is the count that has been with the prince on this hunt, but he hasn't really said a whole bunch.
- 1:17:29[SPEAKER_11]: And now after Humper Dink and Buttercup go away, Wesley has left alone with Count Rubin.
- 1:17:36[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, because he had said he would put him, uh, uh, print somebody says, uh, he will put, uh, the man in black Wesley on his ship, right, and send him out.
- 1:17:46[SPEAKER_11]: And the last things he said to him to buttercup is, I swear it will be done.
- 1:17:49[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:17:50[SPEAKER_11]: And then as he, the prince is about to go away and buttercup is off, he turns to Rugen and says, once we're out of sight, taking back to Florida and throw him in the spit of despair.
- 1:18:00[SPEAKER_18]: I swear, it wouldn't be done.
- 1:18:02[SPEAKER_11]: Count, only count of them's telling the truth.
- 1:18:04[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:18:05[SPEAKER_11]: Count Rubin.
- 1:18:06[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:18:07[SPEAKER_11]: This is again, inspired casting.
- 1:18:09[SPEAKER_11]: I mean, Christopher Gest.
- 1:18:11[SPEAKER_11]: I mean, again, that's what I mean, is like, for Andre the Giant, Kerry Elwase, and Robin Wright, it's like, these are the only people in the planet who play these parts.
- 1:18:19[SPEAKER_11]: Right.
- 1:18:19[SPEAKER_11]: For Wallace Sean and Mandy Patinken, and Christopher Gest, it's like, how the hell did you come up with these people to play these parts?
- 1:18:28[SPEAKER_11]: Um, and Christopher Gast is amazing, really, is he is funny and scary, and I honestly because in 1987 when I saw the theater, I wasn't the big, like, I didn't know names of people.
- 1:18:41[SPEAKER_11]: I had no idea who this was.
- 1:18:43[SPEAKER_11]: I didn't know this was the same guy from Spinal Tap.
- 1:18:45[SPEAKER_11]: Uh-huh.
- 1:18:45[SPEAKER_11]: I didn't know who it was.
- 1:18:46[SPEAKER_13]: It was just that was the Count Morgan.
- 1:18:47[SPEAKER_13]: I didn't recognize him from SNL.
- 1:18:49[SPEAKER_13]: I had not seen Spinal Tap by this time.
- 1:18:50[SPEAKER_13]: Hmm.
- 1:18:51[SPEAKER_13]: And I had seen his year in SNL with Crystal.
- 1:18:53[SPEAKER_13]: Right.
- 1:18:53[SPEAKER_13]: And Martin Short.
- 1:18:55[SPEAKER_13]: Right.
- 1:18:57[SPEAKER_11]: I don't know.
- 1:18:59[SPEAKER_11]: And Wesley looks and says, you know, we're both manifestations, lies do not become us.
- 1:19:03[SPEAKER_11]: And he's kind of Ruben's well said.
- 1:19:04[SPEAKER_11]: And then he notices you have six fingers on your right hand.
- 1:19:08[SPEAKER_11]: Someone's been looking for you.
- 1:19:10[SPEAKER_11]: And Ruben hits him in the head.
- 1:19:11[SPEAKER_11]: Interesting thing about that.
- 1:19:14[SPEAKER_11]: So when they went to shoot it, Chris forgets is not the most physical of guys, no.
- 1:19:20[SPEAKER_11]: And he did it a couple of times and it just didn't look good.
- 1:19:23[SPEAKER_11]: And Carrie said, no, no, just tapping on the head with the thing, you can make a little contact, it's fine.
- 1:19:29[SPEAKER_11]: Knocked him out.
- 1:19:30[SPEAKER_11]: For real, knocked him out.
- 1:19:31[SPEAKER_11]: In that shot, the shot is in the movie is Carrie always being knocked unconscious.
- 1:19:38[SPEAKER_11]: wakes up in the hospital with the same doctor who worked out him with the toe, and he still dresses the man in black.
- 1:19:47[SPEAKER_11]: What kind of movie are you making, man?
- 1:19:48[SPEAKER_11]: I know, and yet everyone loves each other.
- 1:19:50[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:19:51[SPEAKER_11]: Everyone talks about this is one of the great movie making, just a family that just had so much fun at everyone.
- 1:19:57[SPEAKER_11]: It's a karaoke.
- 1:19:58[SPEAKER_11]: It's barely gonna shit get out of him, right?
- 1:20:01[SPEAKER_11]: So you know where we end up now?
- 1:20:05[SPEAKER_11]: don't even think about it so I wanted him to be in the film longer me too like Mel Smith is a British comic very funny and that was it that was his idea too the little coughing that's it's all right and by the way if you read the book that the books there's the zoo of death not the pit of the spore okay and it's five levels of deadly animals which when yes it's very complicated and when in and go and fesic have to go they have to fight
- 1:20:34[SPEAKER_11]: Okay, but this is what you do in movies is we got a and I like this the sound of the pit of despair more than the zoo of death And there's this moment of where he's going like, okay, it's got to be torture.
- 1:20:43[SPEAKER_11]: I can I can deal with torture and I love Mel's miss like shaking his head Yeah, you know, you have no idea what you're talking about you know And then then night the king died and so they had to rush the wedding
- 1:20:55[SPEAKER_11]: and they got married and she became the queen and Prince Humpertink is presenting her as the queen and Fred goes way, way, way, way, way, way.
- 1:21:04[SPEAKER_11]: That can't happen.
- 1:21:05[SPEAKER_11]: And I love that she can't marry and because that wouldn't be right.
- 1:21:09[SPEAKER_11]: She can't marry Humpertink.
- 1:21:10[SPEAKER_11]: She has to marry Wesley.
- 1:21:11[SPEAKER_13]: So child's understanding of things, right?
- 1:21:12[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 1:21:13[SPEAKER_11]: Fair justice.
- 1:21:14[SPEAKER_11]: Fair.
- 1:21:14[SPEAKER_11]: Fair.
- 1:21:14[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:21:15[SPEAKER_11]: Fair is a big one in my house right now.
- 1:21:16[SPEAKER_11]: We have a lot of conversations about fair.
- 1:21:18[SPEAKER_11]: I'm sure.
- 1:21:19[SPEAKER_11]: And my son does not understand what fair means.
- 1:21:21[SPEAKER_11]: Like, we're trying to get it fair for him at this mostly means I didn't get what I want.
- 1:21:26[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:21:26[SPEAKER_11]: You know, and we're trying to teach him like no fair.
- 1:21:28[SPEAKER_11]: And then if we can get into his head, what fair really means, we're also going to have to teach him this lesson, which is what Grandpa said, which is, well, who said life was fair, right?
- 1:21:37[SPEAKER_11]: Where was that written?
- 1:21:38[SPEAKER_11]: Life isn't always fair.
- 1:21:40[SPEAKER_11]: Right.
- 1:21:40[SPEAKER_11]: This is important.
- 1:21:42[SPEAKER_11]: And put, but Fred's savage is like, no, I'm telling you, you're messing up the story.
- 1:21:48[SPEAKER_11]: That's great.
- 1:21:49[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, we get back in.
- 1:21:50[SPEAKER_11]: We get presented with Queen Buttercup and as she walks into her people what do we hear?
- 1:21:59[SPEAKER_13]: about down to the Queen of Refuge.
- 1:22:01[SPEAKER_13]: This is so money pipe.
- 1:22:02[SPEAKER_13]: Viewed, trustants?
- 1:22:03[SPEAKER_11]: Yes, it's very mighty pipe.
- 1:22:05[SPEAKER_11]: Very, I don't know who the woman is.
- 1:22:06[SPEAKER_11]: I should have, I meant, oh yeah, I don't know either, but it's very mighty pipe, I thought.
- 1:22:09[SPEAKER_11]: It is a very pipe on edge, and then she wakes up because she's a dream.
- 1:22:13[SPEAKER_11]: And I love the little Fred voice coin.
- 1:22:15[SPEAKER_11]: I see I told you, yes, you're very shut up.
- 1:22:18[SPEAKER_11]: Um, that's great.
- 1:22:21[SPEAKER_11]: Um, and she goes to tell Prince Humberdink, I love Wesley, and if you let me get, don't like me get married, I'm gonna kill myself.
- 1:22:27[SPEAKER_11]: I'm gonna try to make me get married, I'm gonna kill myself.
- 1:22:29[SPEAKER_11]: And he, again, Chris Miranda does a great job with the, oh, I don't want to have that happen.
- 1:22:35[SPEAKER_11]: We'll send my four fastest ships to go find the Pirate Ship revenge, and I, and if you don't get anything back, then I hope you consider me as a, a fair alternative to suicide.
- 1:22:47[SPEAKER_11]: Right.
- 1:22:47[SPEAKER_11]: That's great.
- 1:22:48[SPEAKER_11]: So we have the count and the prince talking to each other and now is when we've really find out that the prince was behind the kidnapping.
- 1:22:55[SPEAKER_11]: He plans on since she didn't get killed and he wants to frame a gilder.
- 1:22:59[SPEAKER_11]: He's going to kill her on strangling her on the night of their wedding night which will be much more satisfying.
- 1:23:05[SPEAKER_11]: So he's so super.
- 1:23:06[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, basically.
- 1:23:08[SPEAKER_11]: And then we get dialogue, which I think so separates this movie from anything else in history.
- 1:23:15[SPEAKER_11]: For me, I've never been in the theater when I heard... Taron, you know how much I love watching it work.
- 1:23:22[SPEAKER_18]: But I've got my country's 500th anniversary to plan, my wedding to a range, my wife to murder, and guilt at a frame for it.
- 1:23:29[SPEAKER_18]: I'm swamped.
- 1:23:31[SPEAKER_07]: Get some rest.
- 1:23:33[SPEAKER_07]: If you haven't got your health, you haven't got anything.
- 1:23:36[SPEAKER_11]: those lines are totally modern.
- 1:23:41[SPEAKER_11]: They're at a completely different time zone from everything else.
- 1:23:44[SPEAKER_13]: And once again, though, you can appreciate their exchange, right?
- 1:23:48[SPEAKER_13]: It makes them interesting characters, but juxtaposed that with Fesic and Inigo and Vasini, their
- 1:23:58[SPEAKER_13]: interest is not endearing.
- 1:24:00[SPEAKER_13]: No, no, the thing.
- 1:24:01[SPEAKER_13]: And that's funny.
- 1:24:02[SPEAKER_13]: It's funny, but it's also evil.
- 1:24:04[SPEAKER_13]: Well, they're evil.
- 1:24:05[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, so I'm saying.
- 1:24:06[SPEAKER_13]: And so like, you really get the difference.
- 1:24:08[SPEAKER_13]: And that's why you cast the way you do.
- 1:24:10[SPEAKER_11]: Well, and there's something very funny about this, these two purely evil people who actually do care about each other.
- 1:24:16[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:24:16[SPEAKER_11]: So we're kind of related to totally bizarre mind.
- 1:24:19[SPEAKER_11]: And the countenruger goes down into the pit of despair, introduces Wesley to the machine,
- 1:24:24[SPEAKER_11]: Manor, this is where Christopher Gess is just amazing.
- 1:24:27[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:24:28[SPEAKER_11]: And why he cast him?
- 1:24:29[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:24:29[SPEAKER_11]: Amazing.
- 1:24:30[SPEAKER_11]: But to see that in Christopher Gess after Spinal Tap after Silent Live and go, no, no, no, he can do this thing.
- 1:24:35[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, yeah, crazy.
- 1:24:37[SPEAKER_11]: And he does this thing with the machine, which is based on a water wheel, and he sucks one year of life out of Wesley.
- 1:24:45[SPEAKER_13]: What a great scene.
- 1:24:47[SPEAKER_13]: It is.
- 1:24:48[SPEAKER_13]: Wow, once again, there is a darkness to this movie underneath all the fantastical elements.
- 1:24:52[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 1:24:53[SPEAKER_13]: And this is like his crying at the end when he asks for how do you feel?
- 1:24:58[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, his honest response to what he just experienced and he just starts crying.
- 1:25:01[SPEAKER_13]: Which is amazing.
- 1:25:02[SPEAKER_13]: And Ruby's response is interesting.
- 1:25:06[SPEAKER_11]: Um, here's an underside.
- 1:25:08[SPEAKER_11]: I don't remember the guy's name, but an undersung guy is yelling is the the palace guard.
- 1:25:13[SPEAKER_11]: Oh yeah, he is so funny in every little moment.
- 1:25:16[SPEAKER_11]: And he makes all these little beats.
- 1:25:17[SPEAKER_11]: He runs and he kneels down.
- 1:25:18[SPEAKER_11]: He puts his arm on Prince Humperding's chair and it takes it off and there's a look.
- 1:25:23[SPEAKER_13]: Like all his all those little looks are really, really funny.
- 1:25:25[SPEAKER_13]: He reminds me of the guy from a young Frank scientist plays the the chief.
- 1:25:30[SPEAKER_13]: Yes, with the arm.
- 1:25:31[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, he's just
- 1:25:32[SPEAKER_13]: a perfect for those moments that he's in and he has these little exchanges with the main characters.
- 1:25:38[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, that'll be so funny.
- 1:25:39[SPEAKER_11]: Really funny.
- 1:25:41[SPEAKER_11]: And we're going to double the palace guard.
- 1:25:43[SPEAKER_11]: We're going to send out a brute squad to clear the thieves quarter.
- 1:25:46[SPEAKER_11]: And there's a great moment where he says, oh, this is going to be hard.
- 1:25:51[SPEAKER_11]: And I love Prince Umpertig's try ruling the world sometime.
- 1:25:55[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, no, there's a, uh, the brood squad heads out into the thieves quarter and kind of is rounding people up, but there's one guy giving them trouble, there's this drunk Spaniard, which is of course, in the moment.
- 1:26:06[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, who has gone back to the beginning, because that's what we've seen he said to do, if anything went wrong, go back to the beginning, he is drunk, and there's a guy threatening him, and he calls a brood over, and who is the brood?
- 1:26:18[SPEAKER_11]: Well, we find out because he puts his hand in the frame.
- 1:26:24[SPEAKER_17]: Hello, it's you.
- 1:26:29[SPEAKER_17]: Come on.
- 1:26:30[SPEAKER_11]: Well, I love it.
- 1:26:31[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, Christopher Guess said that he made sure to shake under the giant's hand every time he saw him.
- 1:26:36[SPEAKER_11]: Because there was something so powerful about feeling your hand wrapped in this thing that was three times your size.
- 1:26:44[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:26:45[SPEAKER_11]: And that shot, it's a big hand.
- 1:26:47[SPEAKER_13]: It is, and I love that singing kind of plays that because he compares his hand to size of physics.
- 1:26:52[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:26:54[SPEAKER_11]: We sober up, we tell him that Count Rugan is a six-figure man.
- 1:26:58[SPEAKER_11]: We start sobering him up.
- 1:26:59[SPEAKER_11]: And now we see what you were talking about before that energy that's like, I'm gonna go, it's time.
- 1:27:05[SPEAKER_11]: Once we have purpose, we go get it.
- 1:27:07[SPEAKER_11]: But how are we going to get him because we can't get past the I love the bone where there's like there's 30 people men guarding the palace Yeah, how many can you handle 10 and he goes and there's the finger county for a while that leaves 20 for me And my best I could never handle that many.
- 1:27:22[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, you know, I love I love that and then the realization we don't need this any
- 1:27:26[SPEAKER_11]: We need the man in black.
- 1:27:27[SPEAKER_11]: It's again.
- 1:27:28[SPEAKER_11]: Very smart for him to think this.
- 1:27:29[SPEAKER_11]: Very smart.
- 1:27:30[SPEAKER_11]: Absolutely.
- 1:27:31[SPEAKER_11]: And then when we find he goes, well, how are you going to find him?
- 1:27:34[SPEAKER_11]: He said, don't bother me with trifles.
- 1:27:35[SPEAKER_11]: After 20 years, at last my father's soul will be at peace.
- 1:27:38[SPEAKER_11]: There will be blood tonight.
- 1:27:40[SPEAKER_13]: I love it.
- 1:27:40[SPEAKER_13]: There will be blood tonight.
- 1:27:42[SPEAKER_13]: Yes, that was better.
- 1:27:44[SPEAKER_11]: But I love the joy he has in the excitement.
- 1:27:48[SPEAKER_11]: So anyone who's watched Mandy Pettinken over the years knows, this guy's got some intensity.
- 1:27:53[SPEAKER_13]: He's never done anything like this ever again.
- 1:27:56[SPEAKER_13]: There are moments in homeland, but as an actor, I've never seen him in any film.
- 1:28:01[SPEAKER_13]: Do anything like this, quite like this.
- 1:28:03[SPEAKER_13]: Have you listened to Sunday in the Park with George?
- 1:28:05[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 1:28:06[SPEAKER_13]: I haven't.
- 1:28:07[SPEAKER_13]: I have that as one of the downloaded soundtracks on my iPod.
- 1:28:11[SPEAKER_11]: The passion and the power of what he is doing in that is like and the range of his voice is just ridiculous.
- 1:28:18[SPEAKER_11]: He is the highest tenor I've ever.
- 1:28:20[SPEAKER_11]: Um, oh god.
- 1:28:21[SPEAKER_21]: Yeah.
- 1:28:22[SPEAKER_21]: I'm a woman, and you look at those you can see me, I feel like me, what I feel, but the woman, who only for you knows that, however you live, there's a part of you always standing by, nothing out the sky.
- 1:28:43[SPEAKER_11]: So, Yellen's back in reporting to the Prince, and Buttercup comes in, and he starts talking about,
- 1:28:52[SPEAKER_00]: every ship which you'll fall fastest to me.
- 1:28:55[SPEAKER_11]: And that's when she realizes he's lying.
- 1:28:56[SPEAKER_11]: Yep, yeah.
- 1:28:59[SPEAKER_11]: And she calls him a coward.
- 1:29:01[SPEAKER_11]: And he says, I would not say such things if I were you.
- 1:29:04[SPEAKER_11]: And then she says, why not?
- 1:29:07[SPEAKER_00]: You can't hurt me.
- 1:29:09[SPEAKER_00]: Wesley and I are joined by the bonds of love.
- 1:29:12[SPEAKER_00]: And you cannot track that, not with a thousand bloodhounds.
- 1:29:17[SPEAKER_00]: And you cannot break it, not with a thousand swords.
- 1:29:21[SPEAKER_00]: And when I say you're a coward, that is only because you are the slimyest weakling ever to crawl the earth.
- 1:29:28[SPEAKER_11]: And he drags her away.
- 1:29:29[SPEAKER_11]: I would not say such things as I were you and what's really great is that anger and energy carries you right Out of the pit of despair.
- 1:29:36[SPEAKER_11]: Yes, where he goes.
- 1:29:37[SPEAKER_11]: Like you had true love and you not one couple in a century has that chance And so not one couple in a century will suffer as much.
- 1:29:44[SPEAKER_13]: Oh, he says not one man one on one man will suffer as much as you will and then jacks the fucking machine up to 50
- 1:29:53[SPEAKER_11]: And this is scary like the way the shut top down shop with the things spinning around and Wesley screaming the sound of ultimate suffering and the sound goes out across the land and all the people here And the prince hears it and buttercup hears it and into go here's yeah, and he knows
- 1:30:10[SPEAKER_11]: Because that is a sound of too suffering because that is the sound he made when his father was killed.
- 1:30:15[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:30:16[SPEAKER_11]: It's so brilliant.
- 1:30:17[SPEAKER_11]: Then I love him trying to get through the crowd to use me part.
- 1:30:19[SPEAKER_11]: Excuse me, it's important, Fezic, please.
- 1:30:21[SPEAKER_13]: Everybody move.
- 1:30:23[SPEAKER_13]: Um, I worked when I worked at Universal Studios with my friend Kyle Anderson.
- 1:30:27[SPEAKER_13]: He is 7 foot 9.
- 1:30:28[SPEAKER_13]: 7 foot 9.
- 1:30:30[SPEAKER_13]: Is that right?
- 1:30:31[SPEAKER_13]: No.
- 1:30:31[SPEAKER_13]: 6 9.
- 1:30:32[SPEAKER_13]: 7 foot 9 is.
- 1:30:35[SPEAKER_13]: In six nine yeah under the joints like seven four.
- 1:30:38[SPEAKER_13]: Okay, so it was six nine.
- 1:30:39[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, there's mass yeah tall guy big guy eight like a eight like a garbage disposal eat everything right
- 1:30:45[SPEAKER_13]: One time we were stuck at in the land where we were being regular citizens doing the riots.
- 1:30:51[SPEAKER_13]: Right.
- 1:30:54[SPEAKER_13]: I told him I was like, I started doing the princess bride more.
- 1:30:57[SPEAKER_13]: I started being an ego and I was like, excuse me, excuse me, excuse me.
- 1:31:01[SPEAKER_13]: And I said to her, Fizzic, please, and he goes, everyone, they won't really laugh and fucking happen.
- 1:31:06[SPEAKER_13]: It really happened.
- 1:31:07[SPEAKER_13]: Like, all of you were like moved out of the way.
- 1:31:08[SPEAKER_13]: We just walked through and laughing our ass of that is hilarious.
- 1:31:12[SPEAKER_13]: A giant comes in handy.
- 1:31:14[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:31:14[SPEAKER_11]: Totally.
- 1:31:15[SPEAKER_11]: Anyway, yeah.
- 1:31:16[SPEAKER_11]: We find the tree.
- 1:31:17[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 1:31:18[SPEAKER_11]: And we do first we find the Albino.
- 1:31:19[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 1:31:21[SPEAKER_11]: With physics, joggers memory.
- 1:31:24[SPEAKER_11]: Jogs have a little too hard.
- 1:31:25[SPEAKER_11]: So great.
- 1:31:26[SPEAKER_11]: And then, in to go praise, it's a lovely, low-angle shot with God, you know, lying, streaming down from the heavens.
- 1:31:35[SPEAKER_11]: he turns and his sword is guided to the tree and it's even a great moment where sword hits the tree and he has this moment of oh it didn't work and leans against the tree and frustration and hits the thing that opens the tree yeah it's the nice yeah but we discover is when we go down into the pit this Wesley is dead he is dead no you you've read that wrong grandpa yeah but he means dead and I love to the Fred because we're back with Fred and he
- 1:32:05[SPEAKER_20]: You want me to read this or not?
- 1:32:08[SPEAKER_15]: Who gets home for drink?
- 1:32:10[SPEAKER_20]: I don't understand.
- 1:32:12[SPEAKER_15]: Who kills Prince Hopper drink?
- 1:32:14[SPEAKER_15]: At the end, somebody's got to do it.
- 1:32:16[SPEAKER_15]: Is it in a go-who?
- 1:32:18[SPEAKER_20]: Nobody.
- 1:32:20[SPEAKER_20]: Nobody kills.
- 1:32:21[SPEAKER_20]: He lives.
- 1:32:23[SPEAKER_15]: You mean he wins?
- 1:32:24[SPEAKER_15]: Jesus, Grandpa, what did you really mean this thing for?
- 1:32:27[SPEAKER_13]: Is such a brilliant thing to do this in the near the end of the movie, right?
- 1:32:31[SPEAKER_13]: He tells you the bad guy doesn't die.
- 1:32:34[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 1:32:35[SPEAKER_13]: Interesting.
- 1:32:35[SPEAKER_13]: Like it's a policy decision in this like cute little film that there's ball decision of betraying your ending.
- 1:32:41[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 1:32:42[SPEAKER_13]: And because it sets you up, then when you see what happens to him, you understand.
- 1:32:45[SPEAKER_11]: Well, and the emotion of Fred in that moment is like, you mean he wins?
- 1:32:48[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:32:49[SPEAKER_11]: Jesus, why did you tell this to me, the story?
- 1:32:51[SPEAKER_11]: Why have you done this to me?
- 1:32:52[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:32:54[SPEAKER_11]: And this is the thing I was thinking about, too, is that when, you know, on the first stories that I've read to my son at the very beginning, they're literally just, you know, words and they prime and they're cute pictures and stuff.
- 1:33:03[SPEAKER_11]: And there's this certain moment where
- 1:33:07[SPEAKER_11]: we become emotionally involved.
- 1:33:09[SPEAKER_11]: And this is that moment is happening with Fred's averages character right now.
- 1:33:13[SPEAKER_11]: Is like, oh no, I'm feeling real thanks.
- 1:33:15[SPEAKER_11]: I'm not just a story, it's not just fun, but like, and the thing is, we have to go through the pit of despair and good stories to get to our endings.
- 1:33:23[SPEAKER_11]: If we don't have the pit of the despair, it's no good story.
- 1:33:26[SPEAKER_13]: The great obstacles are what makes stories amazing.
- 1:33:29[SPEAKER_13]: And defeats obstacles and challenges.
- 1:33:30[SPEAKER_13]: And defeats, yeah.
- 1:33:31[SPEAKER_13]: Like life, loss.
- 1:33:33[SPEAKER_11]: yeah like live dammit yeah we have to overcome stuff yeah so we're back to the pit and and and and it goes not given up yeah
- 1:33:43[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, this Spaniard is, you know.
- 1:33:45[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, it's a bit of the revenge business a long time.
- 1:33:48[SPEAKER_13]: But he also says the word he said.
- 1:33:49[SPEAKER_13]: He's no fair.
- 1:33:50[SPEAKER_13]: He says it's no fair.
- 1:33:51[SPEAKER_13]: And he goes, bring his body up and he's what?
- 1:33:54[SPEAKER_13]: He's bring his body up.
- 1:33:55[SPEAKER_13]: But we're going to get him a miracle.
- 1:33:56[SPEAKER_13]: I'm going to figure this out.
- 1:33:57[SPEAKER_13]: How much money do you have?
- 1:33:57[SPEAKER_13]: So again, a smart decision.
- 1:33:59[SPEAKER_13]: He knows what to do.
- 1:34:00[SPEAKER_13]: He doesn't know he's smart.
- 1:34:02[SPEAKER_13]: But he's smart.
- 1:34:03[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, no.
- 1:34:03[SPEAKER_13]: He saves the day.
- 1:34:04[SPEAKER_13]: Yep.
- 1:34:04[SPEAKER_11]: I mean, absolutely multiple times.
- 1:34:06[SPEAKER_11]: Multiple times.
- 1:34:06[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:34:07[SPEAKER_11]: And we, we've arrived at Miracle Max.
- 1:34:11[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.
- 1:34:13[SPEAKER_09]: Are you the miracle max who worked for the king all those years?
- 1:34:17[SPEAKER_02]: The king's thinking son fired me and thank you so much for bringing up such a painful subject.
- 1:34:21[SPEAKER_02]: While you're at it, once you get me a nice paper cut and pour lemon juice on it.
- 1:34:25[SPEAKER_02]: Where close?
- 1:34:26[SPEAKER_11]: I think this sequence is so close to too far that it is perfect and amazing.
- 1:34:33[SPEAKER_11]: What?
- 1:34:34[SPEAKER_11]: No, I'm saying it is amazing.
- 1:34:36[SPEAKER_11]: Okay.
- 1:34:36[SPEAKER_11]: I'm saying if you went one inch further, it would be too far.
- 1:34:40[SPEAKER_13]: All right, that just because Billy Crystal is at a whole other place what the whole film is fantastically ridiculous Why wouldn't you have miracle max in this film?
- 1:34:51[SPEAKER_13]: How does he not fit in this film?
- 1:34:52[SPEAKER_13]: You're acting like I'm criticizing this moment I think because it's because to me I want more I would love to have gone a whole foot No, when it's all fucking fun.
- 1:34:59[SPEAKER_13]: I'd love to a whole foot more amazing and this is great
- 1:35:01[SPEAKER_11]: a mystery to incredible and this is Billy Crystal at the top of his pal.
- 1:35:05[SPEAKER_11]: Yes, and it's funny.
- 1:35:06[SPEAKER_11]: So when Goldman wrote it, what he's picturing is Mel Brooks's 2000 year old man.
- 1:35:12[SPEAKER_13]: Oh, yeah, that makes sense.
- 1:35:13[SPEAKER_11]: And so and when Billy Crystal when Rob, they're like best buddies, as we talked about when we talked about when hearing it Sally, when Rob Riner gets asked Billy Crystal, but he's like, why don't you just get now?
- 1:35:24[SPEAKER_11]: But this is literally, Mel is literally his father's best friend, right?
- 1:35:28[SPEAKER_11]: He grew up with Mel, right?
- 1:35:29[SPEAKER_11]: And Rob writer's answer, which I love is like, if I got Mel Brooks, it would be Mel Brooks.
- 1:35:33[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:35:34[SPEAKER_11]: It would be Mel, and I don't want that.
- 1:35:35[SPEAKER_11]: I want this to be Miracle Max.
- 1:35:37[SPEAKER_11]: Right.
- 1:35:38[SPEAKER_11]: And the performance of Billy Crystal did is hilarious.
- 1:35:41[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:35:41[SPEAKER_11]: It's obviously tons of improv.
- 1:35:43[SPEAKER_13]: And I would argue that it's Billy Crystal.
- 1:35:46[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, like you would like you was saying, well, it will be Mel Brooks.
- 1:35:49[SPEAKER_13]: This is Billy Crystal right if you if you see his stand-up This is stuff you see in his act.
- 1:35:54[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah him do those kinds of things Well, I'm like mutton lazily, that's all it is well even though like the lemon the lemon juice in the paper cut That was the bid he did with Christopher guest on Sarah life right then that's right
- 1:36:04[SPEAKER_11]: there was tons of improv in this and one of the big problems in shunny it was everyone particularly Rob Reiner keeps cracking up of course Rob Reiner had to leave the room he would say actually he would leave it's genius yeah yeah um the only major injury Mandy Patinkin suffered in the whole project was bruising a rib from holding in laughter in this scene
- 1:36:24[SPEAKER_13]: that's amazing yeah it is all really funny scene and we have to mention to Carol Kane comes in totally holds her own fantastic she's so great she's one of the most under-preciated comedians no one talks about her in the same breath they talk about Carol Burnett or Lily Tomlin or these other
- 1:36:41[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, you know, fantastic comedians and Carol Kane has never not in fact up to now and she's on an unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
- 1:36:47[SPEAKER_13]: She is hilarious.
- 1:36:49[SPEAKER_13]: Eric, I love her in Scrooge.
- 1:36:50[SPEAKER_13]: That angel punchy plays in Scrooge is brilliant.
- 1:36:53[SPEAKER_13]: She's love to in taxi as Lockers.
- 1:36:56[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, why all that?
- 1:36:57[SPEAKER_13]: Simka Simka.
- 1:36:58[SPEAKER_11]: Simka.
- 1:36:58[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, I don't remember that Jesus.
- 1:37:00[SPEAKER_13]: But yeah, she's so great every time she shows up.
- 1:37:03[SPEAKER_11]: And what we discover is that he's only mostly dead and that they're trying to figure out that is there a noble cause and I love Indigo's lies.
- 1:37:12[SPEAKER_09]: Are you a rotten liar?
- 1:37:23[SPEAKER_08]: I need him to help revenge my father, murdered this 20 years.
- 1:37:26[SPEAKER_08]: Your first story was better.
- 1:37:28[SPEAKER_11]: It's really funny and ends up the way for it.
- 1:37:31[SPEAKER_11]: He says true love after we do this gag with the bellows and we end and he doesn't wanna believe that it's true love because he's scared.
- 1:37:39[SPEAKER_02]: Sonny, true love is the greatest thing in the world except for nice M.L.T.
- 1:37:45[SPEAKER_02]: What lettuce and tomato sandwich when the mud is nice and lean and the tomatoes ripe?
- 1:37:50[SPEAKER_02]: It's so parking, I love that.
- 1:37:52[SPEAKER_02]: But that's not what he said.
- 1:37:53[SPEAKER_02]: He distinctly said to blaze and as we all know to blaze means to bluff.
- 1:37:59[SPEAKER_02]: Huh?
- 1:37:59[SPEAKER_02]: So you're probably playing cards and he cheated.
- 1:38:02[SPEAKER_01]: LAYOR!
- 1:38:03[SPEAKER_01]: LAYOR!
- 1:38:05[SPEAKER_01]: Get back witch!
- 1:38:06[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not a witch!
- 1:38:06[SPEAKER_01]: I'm your wife!
- 1:38:07[SPEAKER_01]: But after what you just said, I'm not even sure I want to be dead anymore!
- 1:38:11[SPEAKER_02]: You never had it so good!
- 1:38:12[SPEAKER_01]: I love he said to love Matt!
- 1:38:14[SPEAKER_02]: Don't you have a word, Valerie!
- 1:38:15[SPEAKER_01]: It's afraid!
- 1:38:16[SPEAKER_01]: Ever since Prince Humpheting fired him, his confidence is shattered!
- 1:38:20[SPEAKER_02]: Why'd you say that then?
- 1:38:21[SPEAKER_02]: You promised me that you would never say that name!
- 1:38:23[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I'm pretty, I
- 1:38:48[SPEAKER_02]: I did a lick-bell day and they shot it.
- 1:38:51[SPEAKER_02]: That is a noble cause.
- 1:38:52[SPEAKER_02]: Give me the 65.
- 1:38:53[SPEAKER_02]: I'm on the job.
- 1:38:55[SPEAKER_11]: And that is the key that gets Miracle Max on board.
- 1:38:58[SPEAKER_11]: This whole movie!
- 1:38:59[SPEAKER_11]: It doesn't happen without an ego.
- 1:39:01[SPEAKER_11]: Well, it doesn't happen without any of them, but yes.
- 1:39:03[SPEAKER_13]: Well, nobody gets saved.
- 1:39:05[SPEAKER_13]: Right.
- 1:39:05[SPEAKER_13]: Sure, I've never happened.
- 1:39:06[SPEAKER_13]: Inigo is the lynch pin to this side.
- 1:39:08[SPEAKER_13]: I agree.
- 1:39:09[SPEAKER_13]: I agree.
- 1:39:10[SPEAKER_13]: Again, I've never played with his my favorite character, too.
- 1:39:13[SPEAKER_13]: I'm just saying, I'm not playing with him.
- 1:39:15[SPEAKER_13]: Well, don't talk about the movie and up and focus how much inigo saves the day so many times.
- 1:39:19[SPEAKER_11]: So we would create our chocolate-covered miracle pill.
- 1:39:23[SPEAKER_11]: We send our kids off, have fun storming the castle.
- 1:39:26[SPEAKER_13]: It's a great line.
- 1:39:27[SPEAKER_13]: By the way, this whole scene is one of the most quotable scenes for me.
- 1:39:30[SPEAKER_13]: I can quote that whole thing from beginning to end.
- 1:39:32[SPEAKER_13]: It's all the other scenes of the film.
- 1:39:33[SPEAKER_13]: This is the one that I quote from beginning to end.
- 1:39:34[SPEAKER_11]: Well, and this we should say, you know, as we talked about with some other films, this is a quotable movie.
- 1:39:41[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:39:41[SPEAKER_11]: This is a movie that I, there's 20, 30 things I say that come out of this film.
- 1:39:45[SPEAKER_11]: I want to say this correctly.
- 1:39:46[SPEAKER_13]: I hope I walked along your Jewish.
- 1:39:48[SPEAKER_13]: I want to walk along correctly.
- 1:39:49[SPEAKER_13]: You don't like to.
- 1:39:50[SPEAKER_13]: No, when I see certain films,
- 1:39:53[SPEAKER_13]: And how funny Jewish people really are, I wish sometimes that I was Jewish or I feel like there's a part of me that's Jewish because I've always enjoyed Jewish humor even as a child, all the way through Jewish comedians have always gravitated to them and black comedians, have always gravitated to Jewish and black comedians.
- 1:40:09[SPEAKER_13]: There's just something about them that I understand the jokes and appreciate the craftsmanship of the jokes and what they're doing.
- 1:40:17[SPEAKER_13]: And there are moments and films that I see where I go, fuck I wish I was Jewish.
- 1:40:21[SPEAKER_13]: I just thought I was growing up in that culture because there's just such a joy, there's such humor to so much pain.
- 1:40:27[SPEAKER_13]: They have to create so much incredible humor to deal with a history of pain that has been Jewish through centuries in this world.
- 1:40:33[SPEAKER_13]: So, well, I will say on behalf of all the Jewish people, yes, I thank you.
- 1:40:36[SPEAKER_11]: you want to welcome.
- 1:40:37[SPEAKER_11]: I agree with you.
- 1:40:39[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:40:39[SPEAKER_11]: I mean, you know, there's a tradition of Jewish humor that goes way back.
- 1:40:42[SPEAKER_11]: Absolutely.
- 1:40:43[SPEAKER_11]: And if you look at American comedy, there's a big hunk of it that comes from Jewish humor.
- 1:40:48[SPEAKER_11]: Of course.
- 1:40:49[SPEAKER_11]: You know, without any question, and obviously Rob Ryan or Billy Crystal, you know, like the litany.
- 1:40:54[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:40:55[SPEAKER_11]: And what happens in that miracle magazine is like,
- 1:40:57[SPEAKER_11]: That's all subdualship.
- 1:40:58[SPEAKER_11]: That's classic, Bobville shit.
- 1:41:00[SPEAKER_11]: Oh yeah, it's classic, classic stick.
- 1:41:02[SPEAKER_11]: So we had onto the ramparts.
- 1:41:05[SPEAKER_11]: And we've got, I love just the visual of its sort of physique carrying Wesley followed by Indigo crawling along and they decided it's time to wake up Wesley and they decide, we gotta do it.
- 1:41:18[SPEAKER_11]: And they put that pill in there.
- 1:41:20[SPEAKER_11]: How long is it gonna take?
- 1:41:21[SPEAKER_11]: He's awake.
- 1:41:21[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:41:22[SPEAKER_11]: And immediately, he's ready to fight on both.
- 1:41:24[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:41:25[SPEAKER_03]: I beat you into a pot.
- 1:41:26[SPEAKER_03]: I'll take your both together.
- 1:41:27[SPEAKER_11]: I don't my arms move.
- 1:41:29[SPEAKER_11]: This scene is so funny.
- 1:41:30[SPEAKER_13]: It is.
- 1:41:31[SPEAKER_13]: It's believable, too, because he wakes up and he doesn't know who he's with.
- 1:41:33[SPEAKER_11]: No.
- 1:41:34[SPEAKER_13]: Why would he?
- 1:41:35[SPEAKER_11]: He's just waking up from being dead and they tell him, you know, your brains, your steel, your strength to take on 60 men.
- 1:41:44[SPEAKER_11]: I love, again, this is why you cast Cariowais and was so bright, because he handles this whole scene.
- 1:41:50[SPEAKER_11]: He's indignant and he's funny, and he also all the stuff with having a Fesic move is head around and not be, that's Cariowais's idea.
- 1:41:57[SPEAKER_13]: Of course, yeah, it's brilliant, yeah, it's really funny.
- 1:42:00[SPEAKER_13]: Well, the person who does physical action controls the situation, it makes sense that he would come up with it.
- 1:42:03[SPEAKER_13]: Right.
- 1:42:04[SPEAKER_13]: I also love this almost like Lucy moment.
- 1:42:07[SPEAKER_13]: Lucy Rick and Ricardo momentary says, let me explain.
- 1:42:10[SPEAKER_13]: No, it's too much.
- 1:42:11[SPEAKER_13]: Let me sum up.
- 1:42:12[SPEAKER_13]: I wonder if that was an homage, because Lucy's done or Ricky's in the show all the time.
- 1:42:17[SPEAKER_13]: Let me sum up.
- 1:42:18[SPEAKER_13]: It's too much to explain.
- 1:42:19[SPEAKER_13]: Let me sum up.
- 1:42:20[SPEAKER_13]: Oh, did you just Ricky say that?
- 1:42:21[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, Ricky has said it in numerous times.
- 1:42:23[SPEAKER_13]: And that's another one I quote all the time.
- 1:42:26[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, it's going to be explained.
- 1:42:27[SPEAKER_11]: No, it's too much.
- 1:42:27[SPEAKER_11]: Let me sum up.
- 1:42:28[SPEAKER_11]: Let me sum up.
- 1:42:29[SPEAKER_11]: It's hilarious.
- 1:42:31[SPEAKER_11]: And all of the, you know, you just shake your head.
- 1:42:34[SPEAKER_11]: Did that make you happy?
- 1:42:35[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:42:36[SPEAKER_11]: You think a little head shake will make me happy?
- 1:42:40[SPEAKER_11]: It's really funny.
- 1:42:41[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 1:42:41[SPEAKER_11]: And then they had off they find they find well if we had if only we had a wheelbarrow Oh, we have that wheelbarrow.
- 1:42:47[SPEAKER_11]: If only we had a Holocaust cloak.
- 1:42:49[SPEAKER_13]: Well, why didn't you list these among our assets and the thing is this That seems so convenient yet the film earns that moment That's the film is so fantastic and good that you don't care that you some cloak that somehow got what you never saw the scene for Whatever the hell a Holocaust cloak
- 1:43:06[SPEAKER_11]: The apparently you can like just light them on fire and just stand in them.
- 1:43:12[SPEAKER_11]: And even then going off like, don't pester him.
- 1:43:14[SPEAKER_11]: He's had a hard day.
- 1:43:14[SPEAKER_11]: Right.
- 1:43:15[SPEAKER_11]: Right.
- 1:43:16[SPEAKER_11]: And then the hand comes down in nods.
- 1:43:17[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 1:43:19[SPEAKER_11]: It's great.
- 1:43:20[SPEAKER_11]: And there's even this moment where they do the All-For-One, One for All-Hand, that I love.
- 1:43:24[SPEAKER_11]: Kerry, I'll always just fill his physicality of throwing his hand over.
- 1:43:27[SPEAKER_11]: And just as they're about to mount their attack, it's time to start the wedding.
- 1:43:31[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:43:32[SPEAKER_11]: And there is a big rise of the orchestra as we push in on a beautiful, you know, medieval-ish wedding ceremony and pushing on this clergyman dressed in fine garb and the music stops and there's a long pause to dramatically before we hear the first words of...
- 1:43:49[SPEAKER_03]: Malay.
- 1:43:51[SPEAKER_13]: That's a great surprising laugh.
- 1:43:53[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 1:43:54[SPEAKER_13]: And Peter Cook.
- 1:43:55[SPEAKER_13]: Just so great.
- 1:43:56[SPEAKER_13]: Once again, that's why I said to you.
- 1:43:57[SPEAKER_13]: I don't understand what you think Miracle Max is out of.
- 1:43:59[SPEAKER_13]: But there's so many fantastical characters in the whole film.
- 1:44:01[SPEAKER_13]: you're I think you're right yeah again I'm not criticizing that scene but I'm not and I'm not pushing back and you're going you're wrong I'm saying I don't understand in a way that's like that's my point of opinion just as your opinion yours is completely about you feel that it is and you're right because marriage and meltsmith and all of this stuff is ridiculous yeah you know it's also endearing at the same
- 1:44:22[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, and Peter Cook, another great British comedian and partners with Dudley Moore.
- 1:44:26[SPEAKER_11]: And yeah, and he is, is this really crazy performance as this guy, the impressive clergyman.
- 1:44:34[SPEAKER_11]: I think he's having the impressive clergyman.
- 1:44:37[SPEAKER_11]: And now we're going to intercut between this marriage ceremony that's going on inside the castle and the attack on the outside.
- 1:44:41[SPEAKER_11]: And we're pushing Andre the Giant in the Holocaust cloak in the Will Barrow Ford.
- 1:44:46[SPEAKER_11]: He's about 17 feet tall somehow.
- 1:44:48[SPEAKER_11]: And we push him forward.
- 1:44:49[SPEAKER_11]: We light him on fire.
- 1:44:52[SPEAKER_16]: I have a great part towards.
- 1:44:57[SPEAKER_13]: And then they let him on fire, and he says, I'd fire for him, it's just here for you.
- 1:45:05[SPEAKER_11]: So, that's a classic, classic.
- 1:45:08[SPEAKER_11]: Um, and, uh, and while this is happening, we're back inside there hearing the sounds.
- 1:45:12[SPEAKER_11]: He sends Count Rugen and some men off to deal with that.
- 1:45:16[SPEAKER_11]: They were back outside.
- 1:45:17[SPEAKER_11]: The guys are the guards, they're all scattering.
- 1:45:20[SPEAKER_11]: Yelens going to be all alone.
- 1:45:21[SPEAKER_11]: Now we start rushing the impressive clergy,
- 1:45:26[SPEAKER_11]: and we're back outside, and now we're alone with Yellen.
- 1:45:32[SPEAKER_11]: Give us the key.
- 1:45:33[SPEAKER_11]: What gate key?
- 1:45:34[SPEAKER_11]: I have no key.
- 1:45:35[SPEAKER_11]: If there's a terizons off.
- 1:45:38[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, this is brilliant.
- 1:45:40[SPEAKER_11]: Really good.
- 1:45:40[SPEAKER_11]: Just brilliant.
- 1:45:41[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:45:42[SPEAKER_11]: At all this whole time, we're just dragging Wesley around.
- 1:45:45[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:45:45[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:45:46[SPEAKER_11]: And then he's, he finally pushes the, the impressive clergyman forward and say, say, man and wife.
- 1:45:54[SPEAKER_11]: Man and wife.
- 1:45:56[SPEAKER_11]: And the wedding is apparently over.
- 1:45:58[SPEAKER_11]: Apparently.
- 1:45:58[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:45:59[SPEAKER_11]: And she thinks she's been married to.
- 1:46:01[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:46:01[SPEAKER_11]: Uh, we're inside the castle.
- 1:46:03[SPEAKER_11]: I love the physicality of how Wesley is leaning on Fizzic.
- 1:46:08[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, it is hilarious and count Rougan is charging with guards and in the go turns around a corner and there is count Rougan in front of him He sends four guards at him and this is a really fast and really good little sword fight Mm-hmm, and in the quarters.
- 1:46:24[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, tight quarters, and he wipes him out.
- 1:46:26[SPEAKER_11]: Yep
- 1:46:33[SPEAKER_11]: And then what does he say to Count Rugan?
- 1:46:36[SPEAKER_09]: Well, my name is Inigo Montoya.
- 1:46:41[SPEAKER_09]: You killed my father.
- 1:46:42[SPEAKER_09]: Prepare to die.
- 1:46:45[SPEAKER_13]: Finally, he gets to say it.
- 1:46:46[SPEAKER_13]: He says it, and what's so brilliant about the film once again, and the great films do this.
- 1:46:52[SPEAKER_13]: They give you an expectation, and they go completely the other way with it, and they do it a way that's believable, works, and when he turns and runs, you're like, what the, oh, and there's a moment, I think what it sells it, too, is he says the line.
- 1:47:05[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, the countenere can take it in, drops down into his stance.
- 1:47:08[SPEAKER_11]: He wrote to his hand, and you go like, oh my God, this is gonna be the most amazing sofa, and they just turned tail.
- 1:47:13[SPEAKER_13]: And even, but take it as shocked, or the character of an ego as shocked, is, oh, shit, we start taking off after we take off after I remember that in the theater.
- 1:47:21[SPEAKER_11]: And I remember just being in hysterics when he takes off.
- 1:47:24[SPEAKER_11]: You just don't expect it.
- 1:47:25[SPEAKER_11]: Yep, it'll go takes off after him gets to this closed door, cannot get through the door.
- 1:47:30[SPEAKER_11]: It starts calling off as heck.
- 1:47:32[SPEAKER_11]: He's getting away.
- 1:47:33[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:47:34[SPEAKER_11]: So, Fesic leaves Wesley on a suit of armor just gonna hang it on.
- 1:47:38[SPEAKER_11]: There's a great little moment where he just knocks the eye.
- 1:47:41[SPEAKER_11]: By the way, I don't know what that door was built out of, and I don't know if Mandy Pittick was padded up on a shoulder, but he's throwing himself at that door.
- 1:47:47[SPEAKER_13]: He really is really hard.
- 1:47:49[SPEAKER_13]: Well, and I like that he, yeah, and like the desperation in his voice, but that's it.
- 1:47:54[SPEAKER_13]: He's got to, that you can feel the pain coming back that he's not going to get, it's not going to get again.
- 1:47:59[SPEAKER_11]: That's so bad.
- 1:48:00[SPEAKER_11]: And Fesic just knocks down that door, gives a little bow, and off he goes through.
- 1:48:04[SPEAKER_11]: While Buttercup is kind of walking off with the king, gives her a little kiss, says, he's always been nice to me, and I'm going to go kill myself.
- 1:48:12[SPEAKER_11]: And the king goes, she kissed me.
- 1:48:14[SPEAKER_11]: Exactly.
- 1:48:16[SPEAKER_11]: Fesic comes back to where he left Wesley.
- 1:48:18[SPEAKER_11]: Westie's gone.
- 1:48:19[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:48:20[SPEAKER_11]: Indigo is chasing, chasing, chasing, and by the way, most of this is shot in Combo, Shepherd and Studios, and it's a real castle, like a 1066, you know, William the Conqueror castle, and you can kind of tell when they're in which and when the other, he comes around the corner, Count Rookon is drawn a dagger from his boot, throws it.
- 1:48:40[SPEAKER_11]: right in the belly of in a go and it's there's this moment of oh shit yeah this is this is not going to work out because he goes against the wall and he says sorry father and I love count Rugan if you've been chasing me your whole life only to fail now that's the worst thing I've ever heard how marvelous he takes it's pain is his delicacy he exactly
- 1:49:05[SPEAKER_11]: Now we're at this is the low point.
- 1:49:06[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, you know, Wesley's disappeared.
- 1:49:09[SPEAKER_11]: Fesic is lost.
- 1:49:10[SPEAKER_11]: Indigo's stabbed.
- 1:49:12[SPEAKER_11]: Buttercup is back in her chambers.
- 1:49:13[SPEAKER_11]: She opens up a box.
- 1:49:15[SPEAKER_11]: She pulls out a dagger.
- 1:49:16[SPEAKER_11]: Very beautiful dagger.
- 1:49:17[SPEAKER_11]: Yes, she aims it at her heart.
- 1:49:20[SPEAKER_11]: And we hear the...
- 1:49:21[SPEAKER_06]: There's a shortage of perfect breath in this world.
- 1:49:24[SPEAKER_06]: To be a pity to damage yours.
- 1:49:26[SPEAKER_13]: And there's Wesley on the bed.
- 1:49:28[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 1:49:28[SPEAKER_13]: Then she jumps on top of him, starts kissing him.
- 1:49:31[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 1:49:31[SPEAKER_13]: Gently.
- 1:49:32[SPEAKER_13]: Gently.
- 1:49:33[SPEAKER_13]: It was great.
- 1:49:35[SPEAKER_11]: Did he, he didn't knock himself out on that, did he?
- 1:49:36[SPEAKER_11]: No, I don't think so.
- 1:49:38[SPEAKER_11]: And then, in the go, takes the dagger out.
- 1:49:41[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, love it.
- 1:49:43[SPEAKER_11]: And Count Morgan's reaction is you're still trying to win.
- 1:49:47[SPEAKER_11]: Or you're still trying to win.
- 1:49:48[SPEAKER_11]: You have an overdeveloped sense of vengeance.
- 1:49:51[SPEAKER_11]: It's going to get you into trouble one day.
- 1:49:52[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:49:55[SPEAKER_11]: So apparently, Mandy was pretty pumped shooting this scene.
- 1:49:59[SPEAKER_11]: I'm sure he was.
- 1:50:00[SPEAKER_11]: He's an intense actor.
- 1:50:01[SPEAKER_11]: He's very intense to the point where when they were practicing right before they shot it.
- 1:50:06[SPEAKER_11]: He actually did stab Chris, Chris guest in the thigh.
- 1:50:09[SPEAKER_11]: Holy crap.
- 1:50:10[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, I don't think it was too deep or anything, but he, you know, broke skin, holy shit on his leg.
- 1:50:16[SPEAKER_11]: And Christopher Guest went to Bob Anderson and said, I think he's gonna really try to kill him.
- 1:50:22[SPEAKER_11]: So I'm gonna, if I need, I'm just gonna throw the choreography out and defend myself.
- 1:50:28[SPEAKER_11]: That's how he described this situation.
- 1:50:30[SPEAKER_11]: And the build of
- 1:50:32[SPEAKER_11]: of him repeating the same line over and over again with barely enough breath to get it out at first and then grow you know first he just has enough strength to deflect the killing shot to his left shoulder and then a little bit more strength to deflect the next shot to his right bicep and you could see Caprugan going oh this is going to be a little trouble and now he fully deflects it.
- 1:50:53[SPEAKER_11]: He says it again.
- 1:50:55[SPEAKER_08]: My name is in Yeramanthaya.
- 1:50:57[SPEAKER_08]: It killed my father, prepared to die.
- 1:51:01[SPEAKER_11]: And now he starts to read, you could see the strength coming into him.
- 1:51:04[SPEAKER_11]: And his realization that he's going to be able to take the sky.
- 1:51:07[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, you know, until it gets too cold.
- 1:51:11[SPEAKER_09]: Hello!
- 1:51:11[SPEAKER_09]: My name is in Yagomantaya.
- 1:51:12[SPEAKER_09]: You killed my father, prepared to die.
- 1:51:15[SPEAKER_09]: Stop saying that!
- 1:51:17[SPEAKER_13]: Let me tell you something, man.
- 1:51:19[SPEAKER_13]: You know?
- 1:51:20[SPEAKER_13]: We want to win.
- 1:51:21[SPEAKER_13]: Anyway, yeah, so there you go.
- 1:51:22[SPEAKER_13]: And he gets him.
- 1:51:23[SPEAKER_13]: And I love that last.
- 1:51:24[SPEAKER_13]: I love that whole thing dude, because it is a perfect end to his story in a way where he says to him.
- 1:51:30[SPEAKER_05]: Offer me money.
- 1:51:31[SPEAKER_05]: Yes.
- 1:51:32[SPEAKER_05]: Power to promise me that.
- 1:51:34[SPEAKER_09]: All that I have in my whole, please.
- 1:51:37[SPEAKER_09]: Offer me everything I guess for.
- 1:51:40[SPEAKER_09]: Anything you want.
- 1:51:50[SPEAKER_13]: I want my father back.
- 1:51:51[SPEAKER_13]: You son of a bitch.
- 1:51:52[SPEAKER_13]: I get emotional every single fucking time.
- 1:51:54[SPEAKER_13]: I see it every single time because his delivery in his acting is just perfect.
- 1:52:00[SPEAKER_11]: Well, and now unfortunately, I'm going to tell you something.
- 1:52:02[SPEAKER_11]: I'll make you even more emotional.
- 1:52:03[SPEAKER_11]: I'm leaving the podcast right now.
- 1:52:04[SPEAKER_11]: There's no.
- 1:52:05[SPEAKER_11]: Don't you ruin his goddamn.
- 1:52:06[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, you're going to make a more emotional.
- 1:52:07[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, yeah.
- 1:52:08[SPEAKER_11]: Shit.
- 1:52:08[SPEAKER_11]: All right.
- 1:52:09[SPEAKER_11]: So part of the reason that he took this job, Bandy, was that he had lost his father in 1972.
- 1:52:16[SPEAKER_11]: and he felt that playing in the Guamantoya was a way to fight for his father again.
- 1:52:22[SPEAKER_11]: Wow!
- 1:52:23[SPEAKER_11]: And this is what he said.
- 1:52:24[SPEAKER_11]: I want to say it exactly how I said it.
- 1:52:26[SPEAKER_11]: He said, and in my mind, when I killed that six fingerman, I killed the cancer that killed my father.
- 1:52:32[SPEAKER_11]: And for a moment, he was alive.
- 1:52:35[SPEAKER_13]: Damn dude.
- 1:52:36[SPEAKER_13]: Okay.
- 1:52:37[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 1:52:39[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 1:52:39[SPEAKER_13]: Oh, man.
- 1:52:40[SPEAKER_13]: That's okay.
- 1:52:41[SPEAKER_13]: So now he's my dad died the cancer and that's all right.
- 1:52:44[SPEAKER_13]: Thanks.
- 1:52:45[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, I'm not all right.
- 1:52:46[SPEAKER_13]: Anyway, we're moving on next.
- 1:52:47[SPEAKER_13]: Okay.
- 1:52:47[SPEAKER_13]: What's the next scene?
- 1:52:48[SPEAKER_13]: So, uh, you manipulate it.
- 1:52:50[SPEAKER_13]: Son of a bitch.
- 1:52:51[SPEAKER_13]: What's the next scene?
- 1:52:53[SPEAKER_11]: Um, sorry.
- 1:52:55[SPEAKER_11]: I got to find my spot.
- 1:52:56[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:52:56[SPEAKER_11]: So we're back to buttercup and Wesley.
- 1:52:58[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:52:58[SPEAKER_11]: And then put I put I want to have to say is that.
- 1:53:01[SPEAKER_11]: I want my father back, you son of a bitch, it makes me cry every single time.
- 1:53:05[SPEAKER_11]: And now that my father's passed away to every single time.
- 1:53:09[SPEAKER_11]: And the thing is, this is the emotional climax of the film, uh-huh, without any question.
- 1:53:14[SPEAKER_11]: And this is where, this is what, this is where it goes my favorite character too, because he's the heart.
- 1:53:19[SPEAKER_11]: And it's like, and maybe part of it is that I don't believe in true love.
- 1:53:24[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, you know, oh, like that's not the true, like the true love that beats death and will always succeed and you live happily ever after and what they're sort of talking about in the film.
- 1:53:34[SPEAKER_11]: Okay.
- 1:53:34[SPEAKER_11]: That doesn't seem real to me in the world.
- 1:53:36[SPEAKER_18]: Okay.
- 1:53:37[SPEAKER_11]: The quest, the pain of Innego.
- 1:53:40[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, and the quest to write a wrong.
- 1:53:42[SPEAKER_11]: That's what you feel is real.
- 1:53:44[SPEAKER_11]: Much more.
- 1:53:44[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, okay, fair.
- 1:53:46[SPEAKER_11]: I love the true love story.
- 1:53:47[SPEAKER_11]: Sure she is great me too, but that's not you know and when we have talk about well life is pain princess or whoever said life is fair where's that written you know that's the reality coming into the film yes that's about true love story about true love and now we're back to true love we're back to buttercup in Wesleyan she's apologizing because she got married and he said no you didn't he's like no this is man who said man and wife he said did you say I do she said no he says then you if you didn't say it you didn't do it isn't that right you're heinous
- 1:54:14[SPEAKER_11]: technicality that will shortly be remitted because who's standing in the doorway, but Prince Buttercup.
- 1:54:21[SPEAKER_11]: Prince Umbreding.
- 1:54:22[SPEAKER_11]: Prince Umbreding.
- 1:54:23[SPEAKER_11]: Prince Buttercup.
- 1:54:24[SPEAKER_11]: It's a cross-dressing surprise, a totally different thing.
- 1:54:27[SPEAKER_11]: No, that's pushing too far.
- 1:54:29[SPEAKER_11]: That's the edge, I guess.
- 1:54:30[SPEAKER_11]: All right.
- 1:54:30[SPEAKER_11]: Too much.
- 1:54:31[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:54:32[SPEAKER_11]: Umbreding draws a sword and says to the death.
- 1:54:34[SPEAKER_11]: Wesley counters with to the pain, and I love all the insults he throws at him.
- 1:54:40[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:54:40[SPEAKER_11]: And what he describes this to the pain where he's going to cut off his feet, his hands, his take out his eyes, his nose, his tongue, but leave his perfect ears so that all the horrible things people are going to say to him will ring in his perfect ears.
- 1:54:54[SPEAKER_11]: And then there's this moment where, but how important things he's bluffing.
- 1:54:57[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:54:58[SPEAKER_07]: I think you're bluffing.
- 1:55:00[SPEAKER_07]: It's possible,
- 1:55:03[SPEAKER_07]: It's conceivable you miserable vomitism mass.
- 1:55:07[SPEAKER_07]: I'm only lying here because I like the strength to stand.
- 1:55:10[SPEAKER_07]: Then again, perhaps I have the strength after all.
- 1:55:15[SPEAKER_11]: And the great musical rise, as he gets up, and holds his sword out almost for its camera and says, truck.
- 1:55:26[SPEAKER_07]: You're.
- 1:55:31[SPEAKER_13]: Sit down and I love the way he grabs his robes like, you know, for lack of a better term like what we'd say a sissy.
- 1:55:38[SPEAKER_13]: He grabs his robes like a sissy runs and sits down into the chair.
- 1:55:41[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:55:42[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, and that has buttercup time up tightly in runs in a go.
- 1:55:47[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, help him up.
- 1:55:48[SPEAKER_11]: Why because he has no strength.
- 1:55:50[SPEAKER_11]: It was buffing, I know it is buffing, and then at this final moment we hear the voice of physique who's found four white horses, and we need for him, in case we find the lady, hi lady, and her little smile, and her jumping out of the window and so beautiful, beautiful shot of him catching her, which again, of course he couldn't catch her.
- 1:56:12[SPEAKER_11]: So he is leaning on a, on a, on a, he's at like a 70-degree angle, leaning back on a board.
- 1:56:19[SPEAKER_11]: Holy shit.
- 1:56:19[SPEAKER_11]: And she's got lines on her because he can't quite support her weight.
- 1:56:23[SPEAKER_11]: It's done perfectly.
- 1:56:24[SPEAKER_11]: It looks worth it.
- 1:56:26[SPEAKER_11]: I don't know.
- 1:56:27[SPEAKER_11]: That's what I kept thinking is I'm hearing all these stories.
- 1:56:28[SPEAKER_11]: Like, how could he be in the ring?
- 1:56:30[SPEAKER_13]: Maybe by that time, it had come to an end.
- 1:56:33[SPEAKER_13]: Maybe this is right 87.
- 1:56:35[SPEAKER_13]: It's 87.
- 1:56:36[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, because Hogan, the Hogan thing was in 83.
- 1:56:38[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 1:56:39[SPEAKER_11]: So I think, and maybe his back was particularly bad now and it got a little better.
- 1:56:43[SPEAKER_11]: But he didn't live that much longer.
- 1:56:45[SPEAKER_11]: No, he didn't.
- 1:56:45[SPEAKER_11]: No, he didn't.
- 1:56:46[SPEAKER_11]: But when did you wrestle that much longer?
- 1:56:48[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:56:48[SPEAKER_11]: He died in like 90, 90, I think so, yes.
- 1:56:50[SPEAKER_11]: Something like that, yeah.
- 1:56:52[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:56:52[SPEAKER_11]: And they write off.
- 1:56:53[SPEAKER_11]: And they're about to kiss.
- 1:56:54[SPEAKER_11]: Well, before they write off, Wesley offers the Dredpie Roberts' job.
- 1:56:58[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, yes, very important to a needle.
- 1:57:00[SPEAKER_11]: You make a wonderful Dredpie, Robin.
- 1:57:01[SPEAKER_13]: It makes sense.
- 1:57:02[SPEAKER_11]: And again, maybe pretend to consider, hmm.
- 1:57:05[SPEAKER_11]: Look, right before he jumps out, it's great.
- 1:57:07[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:57:08[SPEAKER_11]: They write off.
- 1:57:09[SPEAKER_11]: They're about to kiss.
- 1:57:10[SPEAKER_11]: And just as they're about to kiss.
- 1:57:12[SPEAKER_12]: What?
- 1:57:13[SPEAKER_12]: What?
- 1:57:13[SPEAKER_20]: Now I'm just kissing again.
- 1:57:14[SPEAKER_20]: You don't want to hear that.
- 1:57:18[SPEAKER_12]: Oh, I don't mind so much.
- 1:57:20[SPEAKER_13]: which is exactly what he said to him earlier in the film.
- 1:57:22[SPEAKER_13]: Some day you might not mind so much.
- 1:57:23[SPEAKER_13]: You've right?
- 1:57:24[SPEAKER_11]: I hadn't thought about that.
- 1:57:25[SPEAKER_11]: It brings it full circle in that way.
- 1:57:27[SPEAKER_11]: I love this, or this is very well and golden writing.
- 1:57:30[SPEAKER_11]: Since the invention of the kiss, and if you read the book, the book is filled with.
- 1:57:35[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, this stuff like this?
- 1:57:36[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, tons of tons of jokes like that.
- 1:57:38[SPEAKER_11]: And that's the end of the story.
- 1:57:41[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:57:42[SPEAKER_11]: But Peter Falk gets up, finishes the book, searches for his glasses, chances of his pockets.
- 1:57:49[SPEAKER_13]: OK. OK. OK. OK.
- 1:57:51[SPEAKER_13]: Does that's the best?
- 1:57:52[SPEAKER_13]: It's just a great.
- 1:57:54[SPEAKER_11]: uh... no man walk well kind of dad a grandfather and it's like peterfock is made up a whole career of that sort of yeah mannerism yeah and he's heading out for the door when Fred says can you come back and read the story again tomorrow and there's this close up a peterfock as he turns back and says as you leave
- 1:58:17[SPEAKER_11]: getting to you right with a twinkle in his eye is a twinkle in his eye which is fantastic right or do you close up on that yeah well here's an interesting story about oh that's a pick up that shot is the member I said 99.99% was shot in England yeah that was shot in Los Angeles
- 1:58:34[SPEAKER_11]: They're edited the film and they realize we need that clue.
- 1:58:37[SPEAKER_11]: I think they had a no-white shot.
- 1:58:38[SPEAKER_11]: We need a close-up so they get Peter Fock back.
- 1:58:40[SPEAKER_11]: They get a studio, they build like one corner of a doorway, and they have as you wish.
- 1:58:45[SPEAKER_11]: It's perfect.
- 1:58:46[SPEAKER_11]: It is.
- 1:58:47[SPEAKER_11]: It's amazing.
- 1:58:47[SPEAKER_11]: Great way to end the film.
- 1:58:49[SPEAKER_11]: And then under the great music, we have sort of the curtain call credits.
- 1:58:54[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:58:55[SPEAKER_11]: And we should talk about the music.
- 1:58:56[SPEAKER_11]: We haven't talked about it at all.
- 1:58:57[SPEAKER_11]: Sure.
- 1:58:57[SPEAKER_11]: Mark Knoffler.
- 1:58:58[SPEAKER_11]: Yes.
- 1:58:59[SPEAKER_11]: And his, this is his deal from a dire strafe.
- 1:59:02[SPEAKER_11]: From dire strafe.
- 1:59:03[SPEAKER_11]: Does this lovely, lyrical, warm, fairy-tale, nothing like direstrates at all?
- 1:59:08[SPEAKER_11]: No.
- 1:59:09[SPEAKER_11]: And here was his deal for doing the movie.
- 1:59:11[SPEAKER_11]: Rob Reiner says I want you to do the music for this movie.
- 1:59:14[SPEAKER_11]: And he said, I'll do it on one condition.
- 1:59:16[SPEAKER_11]: Spinal Tap is my favorite film of all time.
- 1:59:20[SPEAKER_11]: I want the hat that you wear as the interviewer in spinal tab, which is like sort of the navy animal hat.
- 1:59:26[SPEAKER_11]: I want that to be somewhere in the film.
- 1:59:28[SPEAKER_11]: So it is in Fred's room.
- 1:59:31[SPEAKER_11]: It's in Fred Savage's bedroom that hat is sitting hung up.
- 1:59:35[SPEAKER_11]: That's was Mark Lawflers.
- 1:59:38[SPEAKER_13]: It's a soundtrack I've owned in cassette form twice, because I've burned through the first one.
- 1:59:45[SPEAKER_13]: And in CD form, and I transfer that soundtrack over into every possible iteration.
- 1:59:50[SPEAKER_13]: My iPad, my iPhone, my computer, and I even have it as a CD that I can.
- 1:59:57[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, because...
- 1:59:59[SPEAKER_13]: You not do many soundtracks, but you can tell his guitar playing, if you listen to dire Straits, you can tell his guitar playing in this film.
- 2:00:08[SPEAKER_13]: And that song, the Ensong Story, is one of my favorite love songs ever, it's lovely.
- 2:00:14[SPEAKER_13]: And I know the lyrics to all of it.
- 2:00:16[SPEAKER_13]: And no one else, I think it was nominated for an Oscar.
- 2:00:19[SPEAKER_13]: I think the song was, it didn't win, but it was never played on the radio or anything like that.
- 2:00:27[SPEAKER_13]: And sometimes there are certain songs that are in certain films that I just, that are love songs that I just like, to me, I hold on to them in a putaway.
- 2:00:35[SPEAKER_13]: And they end up in the weirdest films, like, helplessly in love from New Edition, off the Dragnet soundtrack, as well as the favorite.
- 2:00:40[SPEAKER_13]: it love songs ever and this is as well story book story because the lyrics are fantastic.
- 2:00:45[SPEAKER_13]: It's great.
- 2:00:46[SPEAKER_13]: It's the entire movie encapsulated in the song and it's fantastic.
- 2:00:49[SPEAKER_11]: So we had to talk about the reception for this film, okay, which was the biggest problem was they didn't know how to market it.
- 2:00:56[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, no surprise.
- 2:00:57[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, nothing because it existed for so long.
- 2:00:59[SPEAKER_11]: because Hollywood wants to know like oh you're one of these and we know how to do that.
- 2:01:02[SPEAKER_11]: Right.
- 2:01:03[SPEAKER_11]: The first poster is a picture of a man reading stories to a kid in a bed.
- 2:01:07[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, and that was the picture.
- 2:01:08[SPEAKER_11]: It's like no, it's not.
- 2:01:10[SPEAKER_11]: Right.
- 2:01:10[SPEAKER_11]: Like yeah, it's in the film.
- 2:01:12[SPEAKER_11]: And so it went out and it just bombed.
- 2:01:14[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 2:01:14[SPEAKER_11]: Totally bombed.
- 2:01:15[SPEAKER_11]: And this is one of those movies that was saved by VHS.
- 2:01:18[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, wow.
- 2:01:19[SPEAKER_11]: You know, it just slowly but surely over time after the tape came out.
- 2:01:24[SPEAKER_11]: people started to watch it and it's really become one of the most beloved films of all time.
- 2:01:29[SPEAKER_11]: But are not.
- 2:01:30[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 2:01:31[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 2:01:31[SPEAKER_11]: And beloved is the right word for me.
- 2:01:33[SPEAKER_11]: Absolutely.
- 2:01:33[SPEAKER_11]: You know, which is like, you know, I was saying to you when we walked out of the theater is that, um,
- 2:01:39[SPEAKER_11]: I'd done all this creature, I'd read as you wish, I'd read the book, I'd watch commentary tracks, I'd watch behind the scenes, walked into the theater, perfectly happy to start it over again, and you know what, I'd watch it again right now.
- 2:01:50[SPEAKER_11]: Wow, I just love it, I really do.
- 2:01:52[SPEAKER_11]: It is fantastic, Bill.
- 2:01:53[SPEAKER_13]: All right, so John, what are your final thoughts?
- 2:01:55[SPEAKER_13]: This is a film that fits all our criteria.
- 2:02:01[SPEAKER_13]: It is a classic.
- 2:02:02[SPEAKER_13]: It is a great film, and it is a film that you can revisit it multiple times in your life and get different things out of it.
- 2:02:09[SPEAKER_13]: Just like Steve said, as a dad, he's watching film now versus when he watches it, when we were teenagers, right, is where relatively same age.
- 2:02:16[SPEAKER_13]: I love this film as a love story, but as I met this stage in my life where I'm considering children for the first time, like really actually wanting to have kids,
- 2:02:25[SPEAKER_13]: The film resonated with me differently now and that's what's the words the the dialogue the scenes all of it I I can't wait to introduce this to my child if I'm ever lucky enough to have a child like I can't wait to do it And that speaks to the film itself like the joy of the film the desire to want to pass it on Those are those rare films the ones you want to pass on to your kids star wars I think Harry Potter is becoming that for a lot of parents now
- 2:02:49[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, and so there are certain films that you just want to pass on to your children and this is one of them and it just hits all the right notes and if it makes you believe in love and as crazy as the world can be as tough as relationships can be You still have to believe in love.
- 2:03:03[SPEAKER_13]: Maybe not true love, but you have to believe in love and this film shows you that love is possible.
- 2:03:09[SPEAKER_13]: This film shows you that it's not always going to be easy, but that love is possible.
- 2:03:14[SPEAKER_13]: it's why I revisit over and over again because it still makes fun of itself while also respecting what the film is and what the material is and I enjoy that for that reason and it's one that is very endearing and just so rewatchable on so many levels and well what would be will always be one of my favorite films always no matter what
- 2:03:35[SPEAKER_11]: Think for me, the thing I'm trying to figure out how to put in words is there's something about this film that has to do with the nature of stories and storytelling.
- 2:03:45[SPEAKER_11]: And it starts with, and that's why I spent so much time explaining S Morgan Stern that doesn't exist.
- 2:03:50[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 2:03:51[SPEAKER_11]: And the a bridge version that's not a bridging anything.
- 2:03:54[SPEAKER_11]: and this idea of this movie that is, it is what it is, a fairy tale about a princess and sword fights in adventure.
- 2:04:02[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 2:04:02[SPEAKER_11]: And it is commenting on that.
- 2:04:04[SPEAKER_11]: Is that there's this thing, you know, we all grew up with some stories we love this kids.
- 2:04:08[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 2:04:08[SPEAKER_11]: And we've all had the experience of revisiting whatever that thing that we loved and going, oh,
- 2:04:12[SPEAKER_11]: It isn't what I thought it was because I've changed or because I didn't see all the flaws within that thing.
- 2:04:19[SPEAKER_11]: And what's interesting about the Princess Bride is it is both being that and acknowledging that at the same time.
- 2:04:26[SPEAKER_11]: It is doing this thing where it's going to know this is.
- 2:04:29[SPEAKER_11]: the great story about true love and adventure and courage and heroism and revenge and all those things and it is all that and it's completely 100% just like the platonic ideal of those stories that you loved as a kid and at the same time watching us watch it on some level and being able to you know it's like there's this difference between we talk about like big truth versus little truth yeah you know
- 2:04:52[SPEAKER_11]: And I think in some ways, the princess bride is big truth, you know?
- 2:04:55[SPEAKER_11]: It's like, yes, these stories, these stories that we were raised with, some of them are silly and not realistic and all the stuff.
- 2:05:01[SPEAKER_11]: And all of that is true.
- 2:05:04[SPEAKER_11]: And they are more important, despite all that, or even because of all that, then the facts and truth and all that stuff.
- 2:05:12[SPEAKER_11]: That the real truth is the relationship between a grandfather and a son through these stories.
- 2:05:17[SPEAKER_11]: That is the, that, that thing that you got sitting at your parents' knee or having your own child at your knee and telling these great stories to each other, that's the truth.
- 2:05:26[SPEAKER_11]: That's what's important.
- 2:05:28[SPEAKER_11]: And that in a way, and this is why listening to all these people that work on this movie, talk about this, is that you can feel the love they all had for each other come through the film, the love of storytelling, the love of childhood, the love adventure, and true love.
- 2:05:47[SPEAKER_11]: is the big thing.
- 2:05:48[SPEAKER_11]: No, I don't think it's real, but I think it's maybe more important than the other stuff.
- 2:05:53[SPEAKER_13]: All right, so great thoughts, man.
- 2:05:55[SPEAKER_11]: That's what that's what we think about the Princess Bride.
