- 0:04Speaker 1: Another episode of Not Another Football Podcast with myself Simon
- 0:07Speaker 1: Donley and and we're delighted we are delving into the
- 0:11Speaker 1: field of comedy today and we have got a great
- 0:14Speaker 1: guest in corner Bums. Thank you very much, I thanks
- 0:17Speaker 1: forever Man House things, good eye, just the busy I.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Can before the storm the now.
- 0:22Speaker 3: So I'll literally I've just come for the sound check
- 0:25Speaker 3: for the Fringe. So that starts the morning tomorrow right through.
- 0:29Speaker 4: At the end of the month, every night, every night,
- 0:32Speaker 4: some nights, so I'm at my venue is called just
- 0:37Speaker 4: the Tonic at the Pleasance, which is like an old
- 0:40Speaker 4: converted church.
- 0:41Speaker 2: So I'm doing that every night of the Fringe.
- 0:43Speaker 3: But then the third weekend we're there in the Edinburgh Playhouse.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Three shows, so buzzing, so get the show, get ready
- 0:52Speaker 3: in the smaller venue and then we'll take it to
- 0:56Speaker 3: get big licks.
- 0:57Speaker 2: How do you prepare for that?
- 0:58Speaker 5: Then just night after night.
- 1:00Speaker 3: So the show's the show's been I've been working on
- 1:02Speaker 3: it for about the last three or four months and
- 1:06Speaker 3: no Gallas is my last one. So that's that's where
- 1:09Speaker 3: this one's called flow. People always asked, well why is
- 1:13Speaker 3: it called that? And the truth is usually and I've
- 1:16Speaker 3: named the show before I've started writing it, so I
- 1:18Speaker 3: just picked something that I can like I.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Can shoehorn in a meaning to that later, so it's
- 1:25Speaker 2: called Flow Gallas.
- 1:27Speaker 3: We finished the tour, the UK tour in March at
- 1:31Speaker 3: the Glasgow Comedy Festival and recorded the show at the
- 1:35Speaker 3: King's Right, so that comes out at the end of
- 1:37Speaker 3: this month as well. By this a new show and
- 1:40Speaker 3: just for the last few months just kind of quietly
- 1:42Speaker 3: under the radar, I've been then we previews and can
- 1:45Speaker 3: go up with a notepad and just working on it.
- 1:47Speaker 3: So it's ready now, so I'll do the whole month
- 1:50Speaker 3: here and then away on tour again with the new shows.
- 1:54Speaker 1: I regarding the fringe, obviously it's up there with the
- 1:57Speaker 1: comedy side.
- 1:58Speaker 5: It is that one of your favorites to play.
- 2:00Speaker 3: It's probably my favorite month of the year, especially because
- 2:03Speaker 3: I live in Edinburgh, so it's about the only month
- 2:05Speaker 3: I didn't have to put a suitcase and stay at
- 2:09Speaker 3: a travel orge or something, so out of it. And
- 2:12Speaker 3: it's also when else do you get to do that, like,
- 2:15Speaker 3: because you're always kicking yourself on tour a wee bit
- 2:18Speaker 3: I am anyway, because the show's always evolving, and one
- 2:22Speaker 3: night if you have a if you just have a
- 2:24Speaker 3: bit of an off night, one night, you might have
- 2:26Speaker 3: a week until your next tour show and then you're
- 2:28Speaker 3: driving yourself mental, whereas this is like the best blank
- 2:31Speaker 3: If one night you go just something that really work
- 2:33Speaker 3: last night, we go again twenty four hours and you're
- 2:36Speaker 3: back again to fix it.
- 2:38Speaker 6: So more pressure being in Edinburgh or.
- 2:42Speaker 3: A wee better because there's definitely that thing of like,
- 2:45Speaker 3: I'm very tentative they in the crowd work at the
- 2:49Speaker 3: start of the show, because it was like, there's every
- 2:51Speaker 3: chance I might pick up knows a few things about
- 2:53Speaker 3: me as well. There's definitely that thing of like I'm
- 2:58Speaker 3: probably going to see like some folks for school, a
- 3:01Speaker 3: teacher or somebody used to work away. But it's the
- 3:06Speaker 3: fact that, you know what I mean, when your city
- 3:08Speaker 3: gets behind you, it's the best feeling in the world.
- 3:10Speaker 3: And always felt like that was kind of mary a
- 3:11Speaker 3: Glasgow thing growing up. All the big comedians came to
- 3:16Speaker 3: Glasgow connolly Bridges and like Goswegians loved them and I
- 3:21Speaker 3: always felt a wee bit like I wish we had
- 3:23Speaker 3: a bit made of that. So now like to have
- 3:25Speaker 3: Edinburgh kind of be the biggest. The tours is great.
- 3:29Speaker 6: Do you get like nervous, really nervous.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Before it, or really like that prepare that's kind of
- 3:34Speaker 3: gone now because I guess it's like a wee bit
- 3:37Speaker 3: like football. You're always going to have a wee bit
- 3:39Speaker 3: of tingle and standing in the tunnel ready to go out.
- 3:41Speaker 3: But the second that whistle goes, you know what you know,
- 3:44Speaker 3: You know that it's every bit of training you've ever had,
- 3:46Speaker 3: all the work, and you just hope that you.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Know it works.
- 3:50Speaker 6: Imagine be like a lonely place as well.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Right after its right like the kind of hour after
- 3:58Speaker 3: a show. You've got to learn how to manag that.
- 4:00Speaker 3: I think, especially like something massive like the Kings or
- 4:03Speaker 3: the Playhouse, because you've got the biggest adrenaline dumb piver
- 4:08Speaker 3: and then all of a sudden, it all kind of
- 4:09Speaker 3: just goes. And I think that's why so many people
- 4:12Speaker 3: are in the industry. Hit the Bevy or whatever else
- 4:15Speaker 3: so hard. So you've got to learn take a witch
- 4:17Speaker 3: off ay. And I'm very lucky in that, Like I
- 4:20Speaker 3: grew up in Gilmourt and my family mega working class,
- 4:24Speaker 3: So naybody's going to be I mean they're always going
- 4:26Speaker 3: to be like still got the dishes today when you
- 4:29Speaker 3: get heim and one hundred percent in that, because I
- 4:32Speaker 3: think if you only surrounded yourself with people who just
- 4:34Speaker 3: after a big show, we're like, you're brilliant, you're a
- 4:37Speaker 3: media the bit, you'd start believing it is.
- 4:39Speaker 6: That what you've always as a kid, always wanted to
- 4:41Speaker 6: get into the comedy. Always.
- 4:42Speaker 3: I was in bands first, Like I was always a
- 4:44Speaker 3: big music kid at school.
- 4:46Speaker 2: I played guitar in that, and I knew.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Like I was like, I just I want to be
- 4:50Speaker 3: on stage because I think I'm the youngest day four
- 4:53Speaker 3: in my family and it's a big gap my need
- 4:56Speaker 3: a sister's ten years older.
- 4:59Speaker 2: So and then I think think I was a surprise.
- 5:02Speaker 2: I think I was playing.
- 5:03Speaker 3: But because of that, I was always just like I
- 5:07Speaker 3: grew up in this loud, busy house and my brother
- 5:10Speaker 3: and my two sisters are so much older than me.
- 5:13Speaker 3: So I never felt like we get hungry. But you know,
- 5:16Speaker 3: you really feel like you can join in conversation, Like
- 5:18Speaker 3: there's a huge difference between.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Eight and eighteen definitely, so you kind of really join
- 5:22Speaker 2: in with what's going on with their in their lives.
- 5:24Speaker 3: So I think I was up the way I got
- 5:26Speaker 3: around that as I was like, I'll get somebody's attention.
- 5:28Speaker 3: I'll pick up a guitar there that way did kind
- 5:31Speaker 3: of we indie bands in that fu school. And then
- 5:34Speaker 3: I figured out, like I hate having four other egos
- 5:38Speaker 3: or whatever in the band.
- 5:40Speaker 2: That was apped all the funny yet.
- 5:42Speaker 3: And then I was like, there's going to be a
- 5:44Speaker 3: way I could do this myself, canny singer or not,
- 5:47Speaker 3: so I thought, And then I always wanted to try comedy.
- 5:49Speaker 2: And then I was like, I'm going to.
- 5:50Speaker 5: Try that, but where was your thrust the toe?
- 5:54Speaker 2: I did my first ever gig.
- 5:56Speaker 3: I was twenty three, so it's been nine years now,
- 5:59Speaker 3: so I added it this will date it. I did
- 6:02Speaker 3: it in a place called Yes Bar in Glasgow, which
- 6:05Speaker 3: was a Scottish.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Independence them the Bar because I think I.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Had been called the Vesper, and then they took it
- 6:12Speaker 3: over and got it the Yes Bar, and I was
- 6:15Speaker 3: a wee basement underneath the actual pub, maybe about fifty seater.
- 6:19Speaker 3: I think there was sixteen people at my first gig.
- 6:22Speaker 3: It was a Thursday night, like new That night I
- 6:25Speaker 3: went along with maybe five minutes and I hope I
- 6:27Speaker 3: had absolutely shite myself and.
- 6:30Speaker 2: It went well enough.
- 6:32Speaker 3: I always to go back to that first gig because
- 6:33Speaker 3: I think if that, if I'd totally died on my ash,
- 6:36Speaker 3: I might have never done it again. But I went
- 6:38Speaker 3: well enough that I thought I'm going to keep doing this.
- 6:41Speaker 3: And I think my second gig I absolutely died on
- 6:43Speaker 3: my whole in this pub in Glasgow folk right, just
- 6:47Speaker 3: watching the football over my shoulder while I'm on stage
- 6:50Speaker 3: and that. But I think if that had happened the
- 6:51Speaker 3: first gig, I maybe would have never done it again.
- 6:54Speaker 2: So I yes, bar was my first get around that.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Then mentally, just I think there's a wee bit you've got.
- 7:02Speaker 3: It's a wee bit of ego because even if a
- 7:03Speaker 3: gig's not going well, you've got to still go, can
- 7:06Speaker 3: you say, I think.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Oh, it's.
- 7:11Speaker 3: I've had some belters, especially because Glasgow's just got more
- 7:15Speaker 3: we pub gigs in that than Edinburgh. It's getting a
- 7:18Speaker 3: bit more even now. But so when you start to
- 7:21Speaker 3: end up doing the majority.
- 7:22Speaker 6: Of gigs through the West, and obviously I lived in Edinburgh,
- 7:27Speaker 6: I used to go to a lot of the gigs,
- 7:28Speaker 6: but I used to go in the bars and I've
- 7:30Speaker 6: found him the best o, the great the bits there
- 7:34Speaker 6: with its interaction with the comedian, and they're heckling them totally.
- 7:38Speaker 6: I mean, do you like that?
- 7:39Speaker 3: Oh, I love a crowd that's about lively, Like my
- 7:44Speaker 3: crowd are always I'll put you off your because you
- 7:48Speaker 3: just learn how to deal with it. Like if it's
- 7:50Speaker 3: happening all the way through the show and it's not,
- 7:52Speaker 3: and obviously you've got to do it. But if some
- 7:54Speaker 3: day's got if somebody shout something out and it's funny,
- 7:56Speaker 3: it can take you on the best tangent of the show.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Like it's just that there's a lot of people out
- 8:02Speaker 3: there that think they're really funny that Arnie and either
- 8:06Speaker 3: shout stuff out and then it's like, oh, are very good,
- 8:08Speaker 3: and then it keeps happening. That's when it's annoying because
- 8:11Speaker 3: you can feel the crowd starting to turn on them
- 8:14Speaker 3: as well. But honestly, I think people think that happens
- 8:17Speaker 3: all the time, Like I get that question all the time.
- 8:19Speaker 3: You know, our heckles, know, like really scary and it
- 8:22Speaker 3: doesn't happen as much as you'd think. But when you're new,
- 8:26Speaker 3: oh my god, I can be quite not because you're
- 8:28Speaker 3: just you're walking into like a proper like working man's.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Pub and see.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Sometimes like some I've done gigs to the back you
- 8:36Speaker 3: guys heads because when they turn in for the bar,
- 8:38Speaker 3: when they like even acknowledge that the show is happening.
- 8:41Speaker 2: But the great thing about.
- 8:43Speaker 3: Comedy and it's the same as like everything football and everything,
- 8:46Speaker 3: you probably play your scariest games earliest in your career.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Yeah, Like obviously if you get to.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Like massive finals and stuff like that, that that comes
- 8:57Speaker 3: with it, saying thing, But if you can, if you
- 9:01Speaker 3: can focus and get the job done, when there's twenty
- 9:05Speaker 3: people in the room, you can see the white.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Every one of their eyes.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Yeah, playing to like a crowd that two thousand people
- 9:11Speaker 3: where you can make it a face.
- 9:12Speaker 2: It's just a big blob of people. It's easiest thing ever.
- 9:16Speaker 2: It makes you.
- 9:17Speaker 1: It's funny you say that, and I'm not comparing myself
- 9:19Speaker 1: to you, but five fault. We get into a show
- 9:23Speaker 1: myself and my mate Charlie Millard a couple of years ago,
- 9:25Speaker 1: and we played the Pavilion here but we were in
- 9:29Speaker 1: the box and as you say, can you see anything?
- 9:31Speaker 5: But we did five days at the Fringe and it
- 9:33Speaker 5: was from here to you.
- 9:36Speaker 2: It's way scary.
- 9:37Speaker 3: It's basically because you even if I'm having a belt,
- 9:40Speaker 3: it still happens. Now if I'm having a belty, I
- 9:43Speaker 3: get like, if I go on, I've really got down here.
- 9:46Speaker 3: I'll walk off and I'll remember the guy in the
- 9:48Speaker 3: Third Road and never mind all the other people that
- 9:54Speaker 3: loved that.
- 9:55Speaker 5: It's just that one.
- 9:56Speaker 2: But I'd rather be like that.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Than come off and be like, oh, how good are
- 9:59Speaker 3: I because you need that wee thing to go. Next
- 10:02Speaker 3: one's going to be even better buy. But then when
- 10:05Speaker 3: you get to theaters, it's just total it's darkness. I
- 10:08Speaker 3: can see maybe the first two or three rows, so
- 10:10Speaker 3: I can chat to a few people, and after that
- 10:12Speaker 3: and that's when the show's best because you so you're
- 10:15Speaker 3: just you know, then it into your bedroom burr or something.
- 10:18Speaker 5: See when you're saying a bit like the Fringe.
- 10:20Speaker 1: If you feel we haven't performed as well as you
- 10:23Speaker 1: can one night, you obviously don't tweet your material the
- 10:26Speaker 1: next night.
- 10:27Speaker 2: I change it all the time, like I'm constantly.
- 10:31Speaker 3: I usually record it, whether it's just the audio on
- 10:33Speaker 3: my phone or I'll have a week camerap at the
- 10:35Speaker 3: back of the room.
- 10:36Speaker 2: I try and watch it.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Back and go, because sometimes you'll just get a weird
- 10:39Speaker 3: thing where you go, that joke that's worked twenty nights
- 10:42Speaker 3: in a row, why did it no get the reaction
- 10:45Speaker 3: it usually gets last night? And then you watch it
- 10:46Speaker 3: back or listen to it back, and you go, us,
- 10:48Speaker 3: I said it, I went into it completely differently, And
- 10:52Speaker 3: it's just those wee things that make you go, and it's.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Just sometimes it's lily a word, you changed a word and.
- 10:58Speaker 3: How you set it up, and you go back and go,
- 11:01Speaker 3: that's just no, it's funny that I don't think they
- 11:03Speaker 3: caught and onto what I was meaning there. So I'm
- 11:05Speaker 3: every day I'll try to listen back to it and go,
- 11:09Speaker 3: and then the opposite happens. Sometimes a bit like a
- 11:11Speaker 3: joke that's maybe being a solid seven out of ten
- 11:15Speaker 3: the whole run one night takes the roof off, and
- 11:20Speaker 3: then you can't really you know, in a position to
- 11:23Speaker 3: really take.
- 11:23Speaker 2: A mental note and at the moment like, what did
- 11:26Speaker 2: I do differently there?
- 11:27Speaker 3: So then you go back, listen back and go, oh,
- 11:30Speaker 3: I got I went into it like that.
- 11:32Speaker 2: That's way funnier than the way I've been.
- 11:34Speaker 6: You're delaying your next bit as we all go still
- 11:37Speaker 6: laughing over.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Your Sometimes you'll see, like, because I watch so much comedy,
- 11:42Speaker 3: I can see when it happens to like one of
- 11:43Speaker 3: my pals. Sometimes I go, oh, that joke's never done
- 11:45Speaker 3: as well as that he's surprised.
- 11:47Speaker 2: I can tell by the work in his.
- 11:48Speaker 3: Face, and it's just But then by the time you've
- 11:50Speaker 3: done that whole month, twenty seven shows or something, the
- 11:53Speaker 3: show at the end is bulletproof.
- 11:56Speaker 6: Would you say, like somebody's been your biggest influence and
- 11:59Speaker 6: or has been your favorite?
- 12:01Speaker 3: I mean, obviously it's like a total cliche, but Connolly,
- 12:05Speaker 3: if you're Scottish, you just can't.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Obviously Bridges was.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Massive for me because it was he was talking about
- 12:11Speaker 3: all the stuff that was happening when I was at
- 12:13Speaker 3: school and all that, But it was Billy Connolly was
- 12:17Speaker 3: the one because because Mum and Dad they're older, they're
- 12:19Speaker 3: in their seventies.
- 12:21Speaker 2: That was the one. We all watched them.
- 12:23Speaker 3: So my dad was like, sit down one night, he goes,
- 12:26Speaker 3: I'm going to put an audience with Billy Connolly on
- 12:28Speaker 3: Disney Age.
- 12:30Speaker 2: It's as funny now as it's ever been. And also
- 12:33Speaker 2: he kind of thin we forget people my age.
- 12:35Speaker 3: Forget that Billy Connolly when he started, comedians were like
- 12:41Speaker 3: tuxedos and it was set up punchline, Can had the
- 12:46Speaker 3: mother in law around blah blah blah and then punchline.
- 12:48Speaker 3: And it was so weird for a guy that looked
- 12:50Speaker 3: like him to come out and just tell stories like
- 12:52Speaker 3: he was sitting next to you in the pub.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Can he complete?
- 12:55Speaker 3: And now everybody tells stories on stage and I don't
- 12:58Speaker 3: think that many comedians realize like he literally he was
- 13:01Speaker 3: the guy. He was the guy that went, why does
- 13:03Speaker 3: it have to be like a performance? Well, I can
- 13:05Speaker 3: it know, just sound like I'm chatting to you. And
- 13:09Speaker 3: now everybody sounds like that. So he's someone to yourself.
- 13:12Speaker 3: You started in music as well, and that's why that's
- 13:16Speaker 3: why I always looked up to him, because it's so
- 13:18Speaker 3: many things as well.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Like he he used to it's always say an interviews and.
- 13:22Speaker 3: That he had this idea about like I'll be like
- 13:25Speaker 3: this guy with my guitar case on my.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Back and sticking my thumbut on.
- 13:29Speaker 3: The side of the road and I'll be mysterious. And
- 13:30Speaker 3: I remember I was like, that's what I want to be.
- 13:32Speaker 3: I want to just be on the road and.
- 13:35Speaker 2: That because I love my upbringing. It was great.
- 13:37Speaker 3: But you know, a place like that feels tiny when
- 13:40Speaker 3: you want it and you see like people who born
- 13:43Speaker 3: in Gilmour and grew up in Gilmot and lived there
- 13:46Speaker 3: other family, they are danger and you just go.
- 13:49Speaker 6: You're when you're off at the stage and you're just
- 13:51Speaker 6: kind of a bit normal. Do you feel pressure or
- 13:54Speaker 6: when you're in company to make people laugh?
- 13:57Speaker 3: I think I used to, but now I get round
- 14:00Speaker 3: that is id any I've got any social life to her,
- 14:06Speaker 3: But I used to, but now I'm like, if I'm on,
- 14:10Speaker 3: I'm on and I'm having a good day, I'm funny,
- 14:13Speaker 3: but I know I'm quite quiet. Yeah, like it's socially,
- 14:17Speaker 3: but I always was at school in that as well.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Maybe they could ever really believe that I go into this, but.
- 14:23Speaker 1: I know you have a picture of the comedians been
- 14:26Speaker 1: funny all the time, your school back coming.
- 14:28Speaker 3: Through as the laugh of you're seeing you great, Because
- 14:30Speaker 3: I think most is when I did adding like maybe
- 14:33Speaker 3: my seventh or eighth ever gig at this club in
- 14:35Speaker 3: Glasgow called the Glee Club, and it was my ten
- 14:38Speaker 3: minute trials. Everyone else on the lineup was a proper
- 14:41Speaker 3: paid to like a proper a professional comedian. And I
- 14:45Speaker 3: had maybe ten minute trial spot and I was like shaking.
- 14:49Speaker 3: And I remember the guy who was the headliner. I
- 14:51Speaker 3: was a Canadian guy, brilliant called Mike Wilmot. And he
- 14:55Speaker 3: was like maybe and he's maybe late fifties, early sixties.
- 14:57Speaker 3: He's been doing this for thirty odd years, head lines
- 15:00Speaker 3: clubs Canada, America, over here and all that.
- 15:03Speaker 2: And he saw I was shying myself and he went,
- 15:07Speaker 2: are you quite new?
- 15:08Speaker 3: And I asked my tenth ever gig, and I'm dreading
- 15:11Speaker 3: it and he went, do you know how funny thing
- 15:13Speaker 3: is going to happen?
- 15:14Speaker 2: If you keep doing this for long enough? He went,
- 15:16Speaker 2: You'll no believe me.
- 15:17Speaker 3: Now he went, but there will come a time in
- 15:20Speaker 3: your life with the only place you're actually comfortable is
- 15:22Speaker 3: up there. And now I completely get is that that's
- 15:25Speaker 3: the moving bit where I go, I just be as
- 15:28Speaker 3: much as fanny as I want, and there's I'm not
- 15:31Speaker 3: worrying about paying my taxis, I'm not worrying about getting
- 15:35Speaker 3: the car, So they're not worried about any of that.
- 15:38Speaker 3: You just switch off. Everybody's there to see me. It's
- 15:42Speaker 3: like the biggest ego trip ever and then the second
- 15:44Speaker 3: it's over, that's when you're like.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Back to reality. And so I have up there. I
- 15:50Speaker 2: definitely I look louder.
- 15:51Speaker 3: And more brash than I am, but again I think
- 15:55Speaker 3: that comes for being for a big family as well. Yeah,
- 15:58Speaker 3: I was learning how to shut up up.
- 16:01Speaker 5: It's interesting you were saying there.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Obviously he started it and a couple of bands with
- 16:05Speaker 1: other folk, and you were saying about the four egos.
- 16:09Speaker 1: I'm thinking about that because you've been away far and
- 16:11Speaker 1: wide in your tours, so just on your lonesome then,
- 16:14Speaker 1: because I've got this great idea picture in my head
- 16:17Speaker 1: about bands going to wear and a band.
- 16:20Speaker 5: Of brother is going to be. Yeah, you're doing it
- 16:22Speaker 5: on your own.
- 16:23Speaker 3: For the most I bring now like that the tours
- 16:26Speaker 3: are big enough, I'm able to bring an opening act
- 16:28Speaker 3: with me, and I used pretty much the same guy
- 16:32Speaker 3: for most of the guy called Daniel Pechrey, and he's
- 16:34Speaker 3: just a good mate.
- 16:35Speaker 2: He's a funny comedian.
- 16:36Speaker 3: But more importantly to me, it's like with any mind
- 16:40Speaker 3: being in each other's company.
- 16:42Speaker 2: But that's new.
- 16:43Speaker 3: Comedians come up to me all the time and like
- 16:46Speaker 3: ask advice, and I go like I can't tell you
- 16:49Speaker 3: how to do comedy.
- 16:50Speaker 2: You've got to figure that out yourself.
- 16:51Speaker 3: But if you're going to do this for a living,
- 16:53Speaker 3: and learn how to be all right in your own company,
- 16:56Speaker 3: like learn how to be in a hotel room with gone,
- 17:00Speaker 3: I'm going to go and get passed of something because
- 17:02Speaker 3: that's how you got off the rails quickly. But my
- 17:05Speaker 3: missus comes along whenever she can, like she'll come out
- 17:08Speaker 3: to Australia for a few weeks when I'm touring over there.
- 17:11Speaker 3: But and you you've got a networking pals, you know,
- 17:14Speaker 3: we're all all my mates are also like my mates
- 17:17Speaker 3: are also touring comedians. So you've got your wee stable
- 17:20Speaker 3: with piles. So you have a four hour drive downto
- 17:23Speaker 3: Manchester for my gig tonight. I'll be so and so Phone.
- 17:25Speaker 2: I know he'll be on the road gone somewhere as well.
- 17:28Speaker 3: So he's all just kind of checking on each other,
- 17:30Speaker 3: which is why the fringe is great, because it's like
- 17:32Speaker 3: the big staff do. Everyone's in one city for a
- 17:35Speaker 3: month and he's all get your catching up done. But
- 17:38Speaker 3: it's definitely there's times when you're like this is pretty
- 17:42Speaker 3: grim checking into your wee roadside hotel McDonald's, but it's
- 17:50Speaker 3: I've done a million normal jobs for comedy.
- 17:53Speaker 2: I would rather be in a hotel room after a gig.
- 17:56Speaker 5: Than going back to doing that with the fringe. Whereas
- 17:59Speaker 5: your favorite place.
- 18:00Speaker 3: As you played then, I've done the Sydney Opera House
- 18:04Speaker 3: like four times now, which is mad. That's one of
- 18:08Speaker 3: those like again, because I watched the Billy Connolly thing
- 18:11Speaker 3: where he did the tour around Australia, and I remember,
- 18:15Speaker 3: I'm not my missus always having to go because I
- 18:18Speaker 3: never cry at any and she'll greet it any film,
- 18:21Speaker 3: and I'm like, I'm just quite I'm.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Quite low key.
- 18:24Speaker 3: I remember I got off the train and you see
- 18:27Speaker 3: the Sydney and I was playing it that night, and
- 18:30Speaker 3: I sat on this bench and I just started bubbling
- 18:34Speaker 3: and I was like, oh, there came ups wrong with
- 18:36Speaker 3: I phoned my mom and dad. I was like, I
- 18:37Speaker 3: can't stop creating them in Sydney, and I think it was.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Just me going like holy shit, like this is actually
- 18:43Speaker 2: working it. Yeah.
- 18:44Speaker 3: I think that was the first moment I kind of
- 18:46Speaker 3: stopped him went I think I'm actually starting to live
- 18:50Speaker 3: the dream, believe it, like this has gone to plan
- 18:52Speaker 3: and the gig.
- 18:53Speaker 2: The gigs there are unbelievable. Any in Glasgow as well.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Glasgow is always like you need to be really oh
- 19:00Speaker 3: for your game to have a bad gig in Glasgow
- 19:01Speaker 3: on a Friday night or Saturday night.
- 19:04Speaker 2: But they saw it the week for the chaff. And
- 19:05Speaker 2: that's why I like Glasgow.
- 19:07Speaker 3: If you're great, you'll get carried out of there on
- 19:09Speaker 3: people's shoulders.
- 19:10Speaker 2: If you're bad, you.
- 19:12Speaker 6: Know, pretty football.
- 19:15Speaker 3: I'd much rather have a crowd that did they like
- 19:19Speaker 3: me and let me know about it than indifferent.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:22Speaker 3: I've had a few gigs where like especially early on,
- 19:26Speaker 3: just staring at you like you're in a zoo, and.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Those gigs are worse. I'd rather just went you're shite
- 19:32Speaker 2: and I couldn't.
- 19:32Speaker 5: Leave playing expression just still there.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Oh.
- 19:36Speaker 3: I have a few gigs in like Mainland Europe, even Scandinavia.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Scandinavia is tough.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Wait, the nicest people in the world, but comedies just
- 19:44Speaker 3: know really like part of their culture. Ye mad a
- 19:47Speaker 3: gig in Norway and then for a comedians like five
- 19:50Speaker 3: hundred people there silence, I'm sweating, but it's twenty minutes
- 19:54Speaker 3: like dying on my.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Whole tub and I was like, this is the worst
- 19:57Speaker 2: gig I've ever in my life.
- 19:58Speaker 3: And then after they were all come up to me
- 19:59Speaker 3: going that was one of the greatest nights. Can make
- 20:04Speaker 3: some noise they used to theater. So the promoters tell
- 20:09Speaker 3: me is that they didn't really laugh. It's like they
- 20:10Speaker 3: like a joke though. Yeah, it's used to feel weird that.
- 20:16Speaker 3: I think it was just telling me that to make
- 20:18Speaker 3: me feel better. Give me the left was getting laughs.
- 20:22Speaker 3: But you just get you just get your step.
- 20:25Speaker 5: Your football as well.
- 20:27Speaker 3: I bet I I've come and gone a bit over
- 20:29Speaker 3: the years, just because did you play as an I
- 20:32Speaker 3: played a wee bit when I was young and then
- 20:35Speaker 3: I played like.
- 20:38Speaker 2: UNI League as an adult.
- 20:40Speaker 3: But I wasn't it at Union neither was there was
- 20:43Speaker 3: any of the team. It's basically it was Edinburgh UNI
- 20:47Speaker 3: and every every department had a football team. I think
- 20:50Speaker 3: one of the lads who was on that course was like,
- 20:54Speaker 3: we've it was a.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Computer science course or something like, na on it and
- 20:57Speaker 2: play football.
- 20:58Speaker 3: It's like it's all the guys writing code and that,
- 21:01Speaker 3: and he went, I just wanted to get a foot
- 21:02Speaker 3: team and so it ended up being like a bunch
- 21:04Speaker 3: of total psychles for Gilmot and Liver and and all that,
- 21:08Speaker 3: and so they won the league.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Because like it was all boys, actually quite handy. And
- 21:16Speaker 2: I played it. I played on that for a couple.
- 21:18Speaker 3: Of seasons, but I was, I was, I was there
- 21:21Speaker 3: for morale than my football.
- 21:24Speaker 2: But and we played it.
- 21:26Speaker 3: And it was so funny as well, because if you
- 21:29Speaker 3: go booked you had to have a The guy gave
- 21:31Speaker 3: it like matriculation numbers for the UNI. He had to
- 21:34Speaker 3: keep your number it and it was so he's like,
- 21:37Speaker 3: just memorize this if you get booked to that. I
- 21:39Speaker 3: remember one of the boys, Craig literally so it was
- 21:44Speaker 3: like one of the boys Craig absolutely chopped someday straight red.
- 21:50Speaker 2: He gave his number it and the wee guy looks
- 21:52Speaker 2: up and he goes, your Simon fong. I wonder if
- 22:02Speaker 2: Simon phone got to the end, you were forty quick.
- 22:09Speaker 2: So I played there, scored scored.
- 22:12Speaker 3: One goal, which is still there's still contested that a
- 22:16Speaker 3: lot of people think it was actually maybe across to
- 22:18Speaker 3: the back post, but it went in.
- 22:20Speaker 2: So I'm loving it.
- 22:22Speaker 3: But I I played a bit, but I just I
- 22:24Speaker 3: just loved it because it was social A big laugh.
- 22:29Speaker 2: No, no, Rangers are Ranger. Yeah, so my dad's for Glasgow,
- 22:35Speaker 2: so that's what I was.
- 22:35Speaker 3: But any of the games I growing up, I went
- 22:39Speaker 3: a lot like my dad was a season ticket holder,
- 22:43Speaker 3: so was my older brother. So and the teams. The
- 22:46Speaker 3: team then was unbelievable. I didn't realize when I was
- 22:49Speaker 3: quite young, howe needs late two thousands, I didn't realize
- 22:53Speaker 3: how lucky I was getting to see like.
- 22:58Speaker 2: The do Bors and.
- 23:00Speaker 3: Living Crans and amarusso and not higher and I so
- 23:03Speaker 3: obviously didn't realize that we bought them off fraudulently, but.
- 23:08Speaker 2: I enjoyed that. So I and then I've got grown.
- 23:11Speaker 3: Up in Edinburgh used to get tight at high school.
- 23:14Speaker 3: Everybody because a glory hunter. I haven't heard that in
- 23:17Speaker 3: a few years.
- 23:20Speaker 6: Save my new fans and my new fans waiting for
- 23:24Speaker 6: I now seeing that now.
- 23:27Speaker 3: So but and then I went away fifth I didn't
- 23:30Speaker 3: really an eye on it for a while because when
- 23:32Speaker 3: I was like really coming up in comedy, Saturday is
- 23:36Speaker 3: just a gone day.
- 23:37Speaker 6: They also be a bit there because you see your
- 23:40Speaker 6: one side the other side.
- 23:41Speaker 2: That's the other thing as well. And still and I've
- 23:44Speaker 2: started again, do you feel that.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Though, I mean you're at a stage now, I would
- 23:48Speaker 1: say is popular enough.
- 23:49Speaker 5: I mean Kevin Blodge is a Celtic. Yeah, he doesn't hide.
- 23:53Speaker 3: And I didn't feel to hide that. I've spoke about
- 23:56Speaker 3: it on stage before and actually like if you if
- 23:59Speaker 3: whatever you say is in jest, yeah you know. I
- 24:01Speaker 3: mean like you can say what if you want, I've
- 24:03Speaker 3: done it. If you're putting on a show, that's I think.
- 24:05Speaker 3: If it's good enough, people are coming and it's it's
- 24:08Speaker 3: just about the intent behind it, like if people can
- 24:10Speaker 3: tell you're actually being serious.
- 24:13Speaker 2: Noybody wants to hear that about the football team.
- 24:15Speaker 3: But I've made jokes about it and always make sure
- 24:17Speaker 3: if I've got a joke about Celtic and the show,
- 24:19Speaker 3: I've got a.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Joke about Rangers. It's just you can't You've got to
- 24:23Speaker 2: make funny.
- 24:23Speaker 3: At oh and I've started gigging in Ireland a little
- 24:28Speaker 3: bit more the last few years as well, and like
- 24:30Speaker 3: every comedian talks about it there because you've got to
- 24:33Speaker 3: talk about it. You've got to talk about It'd be
- 24:35Speaker 3: weird if you didn't mention it because it's such a
- 24:38Speaker 3: away of life.
- 24:39Speaker 2: But you've just got to.
- 24:42Speaker 3: There's a fine line between a good laugh and saying
- 24:44Speaker 3: something that's you know, it's going to provoke people, and
- 24:48Speaker 3: you know, I think when I was new, he accidentally
- 24:51Speaker 3: crossed that line a couple of times. And then as
- 24:54Speaker 3: you get a bit more I'm mature and a bit better,
- 24:56Speaker 3: you've got I can gauge it a bit better here.
- 24:58Speaker 3: But I just because weekends were always like I was
- 25:02Speaker 3: on the road driving somewhere, and I just didn't watch
- 25:05Speaker 3: football for a couple of years. But I've been watching
- 25:07Speaker 3: quite a bit more in the last couple of seasons.
- 25:09Speaker 3: And not an ideal start season for us, but I'm excited.
- 25:13Speaker 3: I think I felt actually felt a bit sorry for Hearts.
- 25:19Speaker 3: I hope they have a decent season this season, because
- 25:23Speaker 3: too well to get that close, to get that close,
- 25:27Speaker 3: and then also then after dealing with losing it, to
- 25:30Speaker 3: lose manager and trouble big players, and so even as
- 25:34Speaker 3: a Rangers fan, I hope they have a good season
- 25:36Speaker 3: because I started well either.
- 25:40Speaker 6: Was good, not that quickly and beat them later on,
- 25:45Speaker 6: but tough, tough week last week.
- 25:49Speaker 3: And also like it was it was maybe the most
- 25:54Speaker 3: I've enjoyed a season in a wee while because the
- 25:57Speaker 3: title race was excited and there was someday in the
- 26:01Speaker 3: in the mix that isn't usually in the mix. And
- 26:04Speaker 3: even even as a Rangers trying you do like and
- 26:07Speaker 3: obviously we've we've really won in them for a while,
- 26:09Speaker 3: but it has always been the biggest issue with Scottish football,
- 26:13Speaker 3: I guess is is if you want to get neutrals
- 26:16Speaker 3: in there, there's no many There's no many teams in contention.
- 26:19Speaker 3: So hopefully this is the start yet yeah, turning around
- 26:22Speaker 3: a wee bit get a few more teams in the mix.
- 26:24Speaker 2: And it was the last time it came down in
- 26:27Speaker 2: the last game of the season.
- 26:28Speaker 1: It's been a while your time, maybe No, I can't remember.
- 26:35Speaker 6: I think with the one TB passed away when I
- 26:40Speaker 6: was striking and put Tan of Dice to No.
- 26:45Speaker 5: I was late on.
- 26:46Speaker 1: But you're right it's normally I selto have been dominant,
- 26:50Speaker 1: but the fact that it was a three hosts right
- 26:52Speaker 1: up to the.
- 26:53Speaker 3: Split really yeah, yeah, they were just put a little
- 26:55Speaker 3: bit more excitement and and I've always been a big thing,
- 26:59Speaker 3: like I've never really had a followed an English team
- 27:02Speaker 3: or that I've all if I've watched football.
- 27:03Speaker 2: It's always been Scottish football.
- 27:05Speaker 3: And I've always had a chip on my shoulder about
- 27:08Speaker 3: hearing English comedians slagging off the football and that that's true.
- 27:12Speaker 3: It's true we can compete in terms of the level finance.
- 27:17Speaker 3: But there is something about Scottish football that I love
- 27:20Speaker 3: watching because it's it's just it is that a wee
- 27:23Speaker 3: bit less technical, it's a bit more physical, it's no got,
- 27:27Speaker 3: you've no go can ten minutes of stoppage time because
- 27:31Speaker 3: of all the var the decisions and all that, it
- 27:34Speaker 3: just feels a wee bit more pure sometimes. And I
- 27:37Speaker 3: know we get tight, but I've always stood by if
- 27:41Speaker 3: you scott if you're a Scottish person, like go watch
- 27:43Speaker 3: your team because will never There'll never be a better
- 27:47Speaker 3: financial situation if you're spending your money on Arsenal season tickets.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Insteady your team.
- 27:52Speaker 3: But I so I'm watching a wee bit more now
- 27:55Speaker 3: I'll keep it. I'll be keeping an eye on Rangers
- 27:57Speaker 3: this season.
- 27:58Speaker 1: A bit of interesting, be a bit obviously knew you
- 28:01Speaker 1: were coming on and your social media and stuff, and
- 28:04Speaker 1: then algorithm pops on every second post.
- 28:07Speaker 5: It seemed it was one of yours.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Quite a lot of them are golf golf Daff's obviously something.
- 28:16Speaker 3: I've started doing a YouTube thing with these two boys,
- 28:19Speaker 3: Lloyd and Zach Saltman, two brothers and the x DP.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Lloyd was actually the x He was the.
- 28:25Speaker 3: Number one amateur golfer in the world before they turned professional,
- 28:29Speaker 3: and they're coaching staff and stuff at different different golf
- 28:34Speaker 3: coaches and that it just happened. I went and they
- 28:36Speaker 3: messaged me ages ago because I started putting up like
- 28:39Speaker 3: I've got the clubs at the attic again. It was
- 28:41Speaker 3: after the last Rider Cup, hadn't they played in about
- 28:44Speaker 3: eight years, and I just I played a bit when
- 28:47Speaker 3: I was like twenty one.
- 28:49Speaker 5: And then I think that Rider Cup there and.
- 28:52Speaker 3: I got the clubs back out again and I was like, actually,
- 28:54Speaker 3: do you know what, this would be perfect for me
- 28:56Speaker 3: now because during the day you're killing time up to
- 29:00Speaker 3: a gig, stuck in some town in the middle of
- 29:02Speaker 3: the They were like, if I just had the clubs
- 29:04Speaker 3: in the car, I could go kill a few hours.
- 29:07Speaker 3: So I got the clubs that again, and they messaged
- 29:09Speaker 3: me and said, you want to come do for a
- 29:11Speaker 3: wee less and then we'll film it and that just
- 29:15Speaker 3: the lads are brand new. So we just got on
- 29:17Speaker 3: really well. And went, let's start filming some YouTube stuff.
- 29:22Speaker 3: So we had a few guests on. We've got like
- 29:26Speaker 3: a few comedians coming on this month and that, and
- 29:29Speaker 3: a couple of like ex football players and sports people
- 29:32Speaker 3: in that.
- 29:33Speaker 2: So it's been I love it.
- 29:34Speaker 3: It's like it's like the dream, you know, like folks
- 29:40Speaker 3: having a laugh in the golf cart and having a
- 29:41Speaker 3: week pint after and then but it's actually work. Yeah,
- 29:47Speaker 3: so I'll tell you what they're putting your golf game
- 29:50Speaker 3: on cameras.
- 29:51Speaker 1: About to say if what's the most pressure standing up
- 29:54Speaker 1: there and we're at home now on stage a.
- 29:56Speaker 2: Bit, I said to the boys that they couldn't believe it.
- 29:59Speaker 3: I went, I would much sooner walk out on the
- 30:02Speaker 3: playhouse stage today show the standing the first team out
- 30:06Speaker 3: where people watching, Yeah, I pick it up and chuck
- 30:09Speaker 3: it in the fairway.
- 30:10Speaker 2: And they were like really honestly, And I was like,
- 30:13Speaker 2: that's horrible, horrible because.
- 30:15Speaker 3: He's just not especially now that like a few people
- 30:17Speaker 3: know who I am and that I'm always a little
- 30:19Speaker 3: bit worried that, like I saw that corner burns so
- 30:22Speaker 3: and so shine so, but I just do it through
- 30:30Speaker 3: like one of the apps. So for about the last
- 30:33Speaker 3: four or five rounds I've put in them playing about
- 30:36Speaker 3: thirteen thirteen two, so it's coming down. I've shot some
- 30:40Speaker 3: some of the best rounds I've had the last couple
- 30:42Speaker 3: of weeks.
- 30:42Speaker 2: But then you know, then one day you just look like.
- 30:46Speaker 5: All over with it? Is it the same course?
- 30:48Speaker 2: We use it, We play a few of the same courses.
- 30:50Speaker 3: He's the coaching staff at my sober so we film
- 30:52Speaker 3: out the stuff there because it's Royal. He's at the
- 30:56Speaker 3: Monkin Hall one. But we've we've done some stuff with
- 30:58Speaker 3: Royal muscleber Day. But we've got a few more courses
- 31:02Speaker 3: coming up just now that like obviously we've put a
- 31:05Speaker 3: few videos that it's getting a wee bit easier for
- 31:06Speaker 3: us to get on to other courses in that. But
- 31:09Speaker 3: I love it, like it's It's totally ruined my life
- 31:15Speaker 3: golf because if I'm no golfing, I'm thinking about golfing.
- 31:18Speaker 1: And that's what if you have a great clubs has
- 31:20Speaker 1: been on the loft of that went a title and
- 31:22Speaker 1: the Rider Cups inspired you.
- 31:24Speaker 3: Well, I just I was literally in the middle of
- 31:26Speaker 3: going like I need a hobby because I'm sitting like
- 31:29Speaker 3: you just have all day to kill if the shows
- 31:31Speaker 3: at half seven, you maybe need to get to the
- 31:32Speaker 3: venue at six to deemy sound check. You're sitting in
- 31:36Speaker 3: a hotel room away from home, and like, I need
- 31:39Speaker 3: to find something to day during the day because I'm
- 31:41Speaker 3: going off my head. Even the gym that's an hour, yeah,
- 31:44Speaker 3: the day. And then I got right into the Rider
- 31:47Speaker 3: Cup and I went actually get the golf clubs. That's
- 31:50Speaker 3: that's a great thing today. Well I don't switch off
- 31:52Speaker 3: as well and now and that's it. And I'm quite
- 31:55Speaker 3: good abit, Like I'm not an angry golfer even if
- 31:59Speaker 3: I'm having a bad and I'm quite good at.
- 32:00Speaker 2: God, Like I've got a few pals that are brutal
- 32:06Speaker 2: chucking clubs and that. But so but it's they say,
- 32:11Speaker 2: if you have a good round, you come off and go.
- 32:13Speaker 2: I'm playing really well.
- 32:14Speaker 3: I want to go back out. If you have a
- 32:16Speaker 3: bad round, you come off and go. I think I
- 32:18Speaker 3: knew what I was doing wrong.
- 32:19Speaker 5: I should go back out.
- 32:20Speaker 2: And fix it.
- 32:21Speaker 5: It's a lot between nails on it.
- 32:23Speaker 2: And see it.
- 32:24Speaker 3: Playing it with boys who are like amazing at it.
- 32:28Speaker 3: You just start They're playing a completely different It's they're
- 32:34Speaker 3: their gauge on a bad shot. You know, it's like
- 32:38Speaker 3: it's finished twelve feet for the pin. I wanted it
- 32:40Speaker 3: inside that I'd be running up.
- 32:42Speaker 2: The fairway in my top off of us. So, but
- 32:46Speaker 2: I love it, and I think because it's a.
- 32:51Speaker 3: It's a it's kind of a perfect sport golf, because
- 32:54Speaker 3: like if I went and played a game of five
- 32:56Speaker 3: asides way use or anyone who's played a professional, I
- 33:00Speaker 3: wouldn't really have a good time because the level would
- 33:02Speaker 3: be way beyond what I'm capable of enjoying myself playing it.
- 33:06Speaker 3: But I can play with two professionals because the handkeeper.
- 33:09Speaker 3: I mean, I've got a few shots back on fuels.
- 33:11Speaker 3: So I like it if you can pretty much play
- 33:13Speaker 3: with anybody and make it competitive.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Yeah, wherea's a look sports? Did you really have that?
- 33:17Speaker 2: I mean you'd have to tie your feet together or something.
- 33:19Speaker 5: For me, I don't know about that nowadays.
- 33:24Speaker 3: I think you'd still probably do me for pace. I've
- 33:27Speaker 3: never been I've never been very athletic, but I love it.
- 33:32Speaker 2: Do you just both play?
- 33:34Speaker 5: I'm down at eight point six, but I've no played.
- 33:38Speaker 1: You know, you've said, of course rounds and I would
- 33:40Speaker 1: be playing highland that we did a thing or four
- 33:44Speaker 1: weeks ago.
- 33:44Speaker 5: Yeah, for charity, we tried to do a hundred holes
- 33:47Speaker 5: in a day. We got somebody too.
- 33:50Speaker 2: It's a shift.
- 33:51Speaker 6: That scary thing was your golf, my golf. The worst
- 33:56Speaker 6: I was feeling in my back season up and ever
- 34:00Speaker 6: and the else hurting. I was getting better.
- 34:02Speaker 3: But this is the thing about golf as well, Like
- 34:05Speaker 3: if I go and spend forty minutes on the range
- 34:08Speaker 3: and I'll go out and have a shocking round. Other
- 34:12Speaker 3: times you've been on holiday for a fortnight, come back
- 34:14Speaker 3: out and you're like playing the best golf you've ever played.
- 34:17Speaker 3: So I always ask, I'm always acting the boys in
- 34:19Speaker 3: the videos, like how did you get at the top level? Like, yeah,
- 34:22Speaker 3: if you're just having a day where you're no finding
- 34:24Speaker 3: the cub face of that, how do you get around it?
- 34:26Speaker 3: And he's like, just you just got to dig your
- 34:28Speaker 3: heels in. Lloyd was telling me his last opening ever
- 34:32Speaker 3: played at Mirfield. First tea three wood out of bounds,
- 34:36Speaker 3: retied three wood out of bounds.
- 34:39Speaker 2: He's walking down the first fair way. It was like
- 34:42Speaker 2: night mare start and I go, how do you know?
- 34:44Speaker 6: Walk off?
- 34:44Speaker 3: Like and you just got to like bad day at
- 34:47Speaker 3: the office, let's dig the heels in. It's like I
- 34:49Speaker 3: finished around one over. I was like, you got something
- 34:53Speaker 3: out of ye Yeah, that I'd have been.
- 34:56Speaker 2: They give you the same that I me an the
- 35:01Speaker 2: shape a wee bit with my golf swing and and
- 35:04Speaker 2: all that.
- 35:04Speaker 3: So I'm getting it's thirteen, but I think I think
- 35:08Speaker 3: I can get down these single figures.
- 35:10Speaker 5: Saying you must have been to give it up three
- 35:12Speaker 5: eight years. You must have been a decent.
- 35:14Speaker 2: Oh no, it was like a total weekend.
- 35:17Speaker 3: Like I just used to go out with my pals
- 35:19Speaker 3: when I first started, like again, maybe range once every
- 35:23Speaker 3: couple of weeks and then go out and just have
- 35:25Speaker 3: a few pints with what I was useless, but I
- 35:27Speaker 3: just thought, and also it's twenty one. It's like it's
- 35:31Speaker 3: an expensive sport. I was working full time, and then
- 35:35Speaker 3: I just made every reason not.
- 35:37Speaker 6: That it's a whole day as well. And it's eighteen
- 35:41Speaker 6: and I was a bit.
- 35:42Speaker 2: I was about seventy or eighty quid and balls back
- 35:44Speaker 2: then as well in one round.
- 35:46Speaker 3: But I can just about make it ruin with one
- 35:48Speaker 3: or two now, So I and now it's like, you know,
- 35:54Speaker 3: it's like you go through spells where you know this
- 35:56Speaker 3: is probably.
- 35:59Speaker 5: Through spells.
- 36:00Speaker 1: You think you've nailed it, you think you've solved it,
- 36:02Speaker 1: and then it quickly reminds you that you haven't.
- 36:06Speaker 6: You were getting It's weird that I played Cat Candied
- 36:10Speaker 6: as well, right, but I played more that day and
- 36:13Speaker 6: I played than a year. That was the reality of it.
- 36:16Speaker 6: But as the game went on, you know, I play
- 36:20Speaker 6: of about fourteen and I was like the last two rope,
- 36:23Speaker 6: I was about eleven and twelve over, you know, And
- 36:27Speaker 6: there's no reason for that.
- 36:28Speaker 2: Yeah, apart from the thing that's got my scores coming
- 36:32Speaker 2: down more than obviously been working on my swing, so
- 36:34Speaker 2: I'm hitting the ball better. But the thing that's actually.
- 36:37Speaker 3: Taking so many strokes off my game is just them
- 36:40Speaker 3: getting but them just getting me better at course management.
- 36:44Speaker 2: Like if if it was a Part four at five,
- 36:47Speaker 2: I'd just walk up to the team with my driver and.
- 36:49Speaker 3: Now they're like, there's probably three holes on an eighteen
- 36:51Speaker 3: of course where you should be hitting driver.
- 36:54Speaker 2: He's like everyone else, you should just be heating a
- 36:56Speaker 2: long iron.
- 36:57Speaker 3: And now I'm like, oh my god, I get to
- 37:00Speaker 3: play my second shot at the fairway and they'll buy
- 37:02Speaker 3: a tree. Was such an easier game when you're in
- 37:06Speaker 3: the middle, but I love it. So we've got we
- 37:10Speaker 3: put one of these videos every week now.
- 37:12Speaker 5: And that's the ones that keep popping up. Man singes
- 37:16Speaker 5: no I so but that's good.
- 37:18Speaker 2: That's good to know that they're working.
- 37:20Speaker 5: There'll be music.
- 37:21Speaker 1: Then you said he started out and that wats your
- 37:23Speaker 1: influences there again a big music guy now.
- 37:26Speaker 2: Massive by massive.
- 37:27Speaker 3: I probably I'd probably rather put music on than like
- 37:31Speaker 3: a film with him in the house by myself. My
- 37:35Speaker 3: dad got me any good music again because he was
- 37:38Speaker 3: like he was just he was age that like my
- 37:40Speaker 3: mates granddads were at school, so his stuff you got
- 37:45Speaker 3: many like Cream Hendrix who all that stuff. So I
- 37:50Speaker 3: was in really good stuff quite.
- 37:52Speaker 2: Young and that's what made me play guitar and to
- 37:55Speaker 2: be in a band in that so.
- 37:57Speaker 3: I wasn't all the country music. Now I'm the same
- 38:03Speaker 3: thing I've got. I've got a bit of a mental
- 38:06Speaker 3: Spotify wrapped in the end of the year because I say,
- 38:10Speaker 3: sometimes I just go through listening to Moretown for a
- 38:13Speaker 3: couple of weeks.
- 38:14Speaker 6: I was, I was young. I love a Van Dross
- 38:16Speaker 6: but that was on the Oasis later and then everything everything.
- 38:24Speaker 3: So same again, like my mum, where's My dad was
- 38:27Speaker 3: into like the hard rock kind of psychedelic stuff, Pink
- 38:31Speaker 3: Floyd and all that. My mum was like all the
- 38:34Speaker 3: motown stuff. So so we listened to all that growing up.
- 38:37Speaker 3: And then my older brother was when Oasis was big
- 38:41Speaker 3: the first time that was his thing. Had an acoustic
- 38:44Speaker 3: guitar and saved sitting, they wonder Wall and all that.
- 38:47Speaker 3: So I had all the all the brick pop.
- 38:49Speaker 5: Ping or the velve and all that memorable gigs over there.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Went to Oasis Murrayfield last year.
- 38:56Speaker 3: Unbelievable and I was. I think what made it even
- 38:58Speaker 3: better is we only got the tickets the day of.
- 39:01Speaker 3: I've been trying to get tickets, like for a couple
- 39:04Speaker 3: of weeks, the Tuesday, the one that they added phenomenal,
- 39:09Speaker 3: But there it was, the Sunshine Day. It was amazing,
- 39:12Speaker 3: unbelievable again and there's a theme here. I remember bursting
- 39:16Speaker 3: it great and again don't look back and anger at
- 39:19Speaker 3: the end. Always great weird stuff.
- 39:21Speaker 5: It's never like I think that was emotional though everybody
- 39:25Speaker 5: I could.
- 39:25Speaker 3: I just I just remember, like the acting they missed
- 39:28Speaker 3: them the first time, like I remember, I remember that
- 39:31Speaker 3: last couple of gigs because remember they did was it
- 39:35Speaker 3: Hamden or Murdyiel right at the end, and it was
- 39:38Speaker 3: Kasabian and that they were opening for them, and it
- 39:42Speaker 3: had been in the news. They'd had their big, massive
- 39:44Speaker 3: argument and they hated each other and they were just
- 39:46Speaker 3: finishing these last couple of gigs, and so I remember
- 39:49Speaker 3: I did. I don't think I realized at the time
- 39:51Speaker 3: I was missing the end. They're like an either and
- 39:54Speaker 3: then they get them back. And it was during the fringe,
- 39:56Speaker 3: so I was already on like riding a high. I
- 39:59Speaker 3: just remember it was like and the weather was unbelievable.
- 40:02Speaker 3: I went there with my missus and it was that
- 40:05Speaker 3: was unbelievably good. And I saw last year, I saw
- 40:08Speaker 3: a guy called Tyler Childers who's a country guy and
- 40:12Speaker 3: he in the States. He's playing stadiums because it was
- 40:16Speaker 3: his first or second tour over here.
- 40:18Speaker 2: We saw him in the old two and glass.
- 40:20Speaker 3: It was only like two thousand out this world, like
- 40:24Speaker 3: just everybody on the stage was just unbelievable talented, like.
- 40:29Speaker 2: So he sticks out. He was amazing. But I Oasis
- 40:33Speaker 2: were another level.
- 40:35Speaker 5: Would you ever re visit that band? Wise?
- 40:38Speaker 3: I've spoke about another couple of comedians just today. It
- 40:42Speaker 3: is like a bit of fun because of a pal
- 40:44Speaker 3: who plays the drums in that. But just trying to
- 40:46Speaker 3: find the time. And also I've got a wee bit
- 40:48Speaker 3: shy at guitar again because it's no no, he just
- 40:54Speaker 3: like he never really took it, but he had just
- 40:57Speaker 3: like everybody. I think late nineties, he got an acoustic guitarist.
- 41:02Speaker 3: I had the Oasis chord book and the Verve and
- 41:06Speaker 3: all that, so he can struck a few tunes. But
- 41:10Speaker 3: I that's the thing about music, it's like anything else.
- 41:14Speaker 3: Like every time I pick up the guitar. Now I'm
- 41:16Speaker 3: trying to re learn stuff that I used to be.
- 41:19Speaker 3: I have to get a proper.
- 41:23Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 41:24Speaker 3: So that that is frustrating getting back in because you've
- 41:29Speaker 3: got that memory of like I used to be with
- 41:31Speaker 3: the stuff and so but I'll get past it eventually.
- 41:34Speaker 2: I'll get to find a little bit more time and
- 41:36Speaker 2: and get back in there.
- 41:37Speaker 5: But you played Jaws, didn't you.
- 41:42Speaker 6: I never claimed I used to take you because it
- 41:45Speaker 6: used to get had so many guitar lessons.
- 41:48Speaker 2: I was like your brother, and I was like.
- 41:52Speaker 6: Guitar lesson book, the guitar lessons, like are you playing
- 41:55Speaker 6: in you? You know, like what's your teaching you you.
- 41:58Speaker 2: Used to go.
- 42:01Speaker 5: That was my huge frustration. I couldn't go straight into something.
- 42:06Speaker 6: You know, so many people are like that at least finish.
- 42:15Speaker 5: And probably most people back then picked up a guitar
- 42:18Speaker 5: and you think you can.
- 42:19Speaker 3: I was pretty musical, but that I remember that being
- 42:21Speaker 3: another thing that made me go like, thank god I
- 42:23Speaker 3: found comedy because I worked in I worked in a
- 42:26Speaker 3: guitar shop for a wee while and a few of
- 42:29Speaker 3: the boys do think when you just see someone like
- 42:32Speaker 3: you see natural talent in front of your face and
- 42:36Speaker 3: you realize, like, I don't think I'll ever have that,
- 42:39Speaker 3: Like and I saw these boys that like worked in there,
- 42:41Speaker 3: but they were also you know, like session musicians, Like.
- 42:44Speaker 2: They get hired Rod Stewart needs a guitar player for
- 42:48Speaker 2: eight gigs, and one of them would go.
- 42:50Speaker 5: And these were the guys in the.
- 42:51Speaker 2: Shop, and like a lot of them because it just
- 42:53Speaker 2: wasn't steady.
- 42:54Speaker 3: They maybe get one tour, going on tour, like I
- 42:57Speaker 3: remember one of the guys, like we went on tour
- 42:59Speaker 3: with simply Read.
- 42:59Speaker 2: Or something as a replacement guitarists. But then you might know,
- 43:03Speaker 2: get that for again a few months.
- 43:04Speaker 3: So they also had a steady job working in the
- 43:07Speaker 3: shop and that, and you watch these guys and it's
- 43:10Speaker 3: like I was like I was pretty good, but they
- 43:12Speaker 3: were like one another level.
- 43:15Speaker 2: And it's when you see that you go like.
- 43:17Speaker 3: So disheartening, because I could probably practice every day for
- 43:20Speaker 3: you and you'll just.
- 43:21Speaker 2: Never get there.
- 43:22Speaker 3: Aware as when I started comedy, I was like I
- 43:25Speaker 3: realized quite early, like I think I've kind of got
- 43:27Speaker 3: a wee bit at the knack for this, Like I'm
- 43:30Speaker 3: caughting an onto this quite quickly. And I was pretty
- 43:33Speaker 3: used a bit when you were younger, Like when you
- 43:36Speaker 3: started playing football, do you feel like you weren't straight
- 43:39Speaker 3: away for a young age you were like, I think
- 43:41Speaker 3: I'm good enough to do this.
- 43:43Speaker 1: Probably when I was a kid, I can remember playing
- 43:46Speaker 1: older cash and thinking I'm better than that. But my
- 43:51Speaker 1: path to professional football is a wee bit on orthodox.
- 43:53Speaker 1: But I always back myself by playing bit. I remember
- 43:58Speaker 1: right back at a young age thinking you know I better.
- 44:00Speaker 1: Then he's getting maybe three four years older than me.
- 44:04Speaker 1: You're not thinking at that time you're going to.
- 44:06Speaker 2: Make it the same thing.
- 44:07Speaker 3: And we've got that very Scottish thing and as we
- 44:09Speaker 3: don't want to go like I'm good because we've got
- 44:11Speaker 3: that thing of like we're always putting ourselves doing a
- 44:14Speaker 3: wee bit. And I never said out loud, I was
- 44:17Speaker 3: like I think, I'm I think I've found the thing
- 44:18Speaker 3: I'm naturally good at.
- 44:20Speaker 2: But I definitely did start I was like I'm thinking.
- 44:23Speaker 2: I was like, I'm gig.
- 44:24Speaker 3: I'm six months in. I'm having better gigs than a
- 44:27Speaker 3: few of these guys who've been going for a few years.
- 44:28Speaker 3: And then you just kind of keep that in the
- 44:31Speaker 3: back of your mind and go, I think I'll maybe
- 44:33Speaker 3: finding something I'm pretty good at here.
- 44:35Speaker 2: Yeah, And I never really had that with music.
- 44:37Speaker 3: I always as good as I ever got to a guitar,
- 44:39Speaker 3: I always felt like I had to work really really
- 44:41Speaker 3: hard it. And then you meet folk who just like
- 44:44Speaker 3: listen to a song twice and then they've got and
- 44:46Speaker 3: I was like, I don't think I'll ever have that,
- 44:48Speaker 3: so I'll stick to stick to stand.
- 44:50Speaker 1: Then what we do is usually when we finished the episode,
- 44:53Speaker 1: we've got recommendations from our previous guests, right for you,
- 44:56Speaker 1: and it's an album, a film, and a song, right
- 45:01Speaker 1: and the last guest was John Higgins, and his album
- 45:05Speaker 1: was the best of the Proclaimers.
- 45:08Speaker 5: That's Neck of Wood. His film was The Warriors.
- 45:11Speaker 2: Oh I know, I know, I I great film.
- 45:15Speaker 1: And his song was I Am the Resurrection from stone Ros.
- 45:17Speaker 1: He thinks he's walk on tune when he comes out.
- 45:20Speaker 2: That's a that's a tune.
- 45:21Speaker 5: So can you give us three recommendations for the next guest.
- 45:25Speaker 3: Absolutely, I'll do it for song because it's for album
- 45:30Speaker 3: since it's I just said his name and it's one
- 45:33Speaker 3: that not I don't think that many people know is
- 45:35Speaker 3: that that guy called Tyler Childers and he's got a
- 45:38Speaker 3: great album called Purgatory right, and it's just although it's
- 45:42Speaker 3: just him with an acoustic guitar, brilliant voice, and he's
- 45:46Speaker 3: like proper, you know, he's fronds, like he's coal miner's son,
- 45:51Speaker 3: and it's all about like hard living and growing up
- 45:54Speaker 3: and and apple h and all that, and.
- 45:56Speaker 2: He's just I could listen to him for hours. So
- 45:58Speaker 2: that's a that's a brilliant album. Film. So many I
- 46:05Speaker 2: love a film.
- 46:06Speaker 3: I can just sit down and it's such an old film,
- 46:09Speaker 3: but again it's like it came from my dad. We
- 46:11Speaker 3: usually watch it in that wee bit between Christmas and
- 46:14Speaker 3: New Year. Is real Bravo, the old John Wayne one
- 46:18Speaker 3: and Dean Martin's in it. That's one of those ones
- 46:22Speaker 3: like I can just keep that on even if I
- 46:24Speaker 3: land on it halfway through. Or we just watched Project
- 46:28Speaker 3: Hail Mary, which is just brilliant. I really enjoyed it.
- 46:33Speaker 2: And then what was the other one? So that's an
- 46:35Speaker 2: album song A song, a song.
- 46:41Speaker 3: You know what I'll do because that's my walkout for
- 46:43Speaker 3: this fringe is money for Nothing, dire Stress.
- 46:48Speaker 2: Maybe the best intro of all time. You know, it's funny.
- 46:54Speaker 2: I never I never get past halfway in the song,
- 46:57Speaker 2: but that intro is one of the best of a
- 47:00Speaker 2: So I'll do that.
- 47:02Speaker 5: Great choices mate, You've been a great guest.
- 47:04Speaker 2: Thank you very much.
- 47:05Speaker 5: Thanks for all the best.
- 47:06Speaker 6: Thanks cheers.
- 47:07Speaker 2: You need to come and see the show. I would
- 47:09Speaker 2: love to be a shout after them and I my
- 47:13Speaker 2: good
