Latest / The imuRgency Room / Euphoria Season 3 Is Worse Than We Thought
Transcript
- 0:00OK, I actually take back everything that I've said about
- 0:02Euphoria up until this point because this latest season isn't
- 0:05that bad. It's actually so much worse.
- 0:09Hey guys, what's up? It's Emergency and welcome back
- 0:10to my channel. And we need to have a
- 0:12conversation around Season 3 of Euphoria.
- 0:15And I know the first episode just dropped.
- 0:17We've only seen the first episode, but I feel like the
- 0:19direction in which the show is seeming to take is a little
- 0:22troubling and diving into things that I don't know it is ready to
- 0:26actually address because this first episode is setting the
- 0:28tone for the rest of the season. And I'm actually very concerned.
- 0:32And let's talk about it. The highly anticipated Season 3
- 0:34of before it is finally out. What's that, brother?
- 0:38We got the first episode that came out this past Sunday, and
- 0:41people were generally gagged by what they saw.
- 0:43I know I personally was. Oh, both the lady and the punk
- 0:50were too stung speak because not only does it feel like Euphoria
- 0:54has just become a different show, it also has somehow turned
- 0:58up the stakes and become even darker of a show.
- 1:01Seemingly trying to address things and have critiques on
- 1:03things like substance abuse, the proliferation of substances like
- 1:06and how easy it is to get caught up in the very predatory and all
- 1:09consuming land of substance trafficking.
- 1:12And we see that right off the bat with Rue because we finally
- 1:16find out that Lori did in fact find Rue and definitely wants
- 1:19money back and has 10X ruse debt.
- 1:22And that is pretty much where we follow this whole episode.
- 1:25It's just ruse escapades working for Lori and it seems like she
- 1:28is in deeper than ever. No pun intended, because yeah,
- 1:32we'll get into that. That's that's part of it.
- 1:34And I want to say that this first episode definitely played
- 1:37into like the whole first episode shock value that
- 1:39Euphoria has been known for and that many shows are known for at
- 1:42the beginning of their seasons to bring out the flashy and
- 1:44controversial things to get people talking, get people
- 1:46interested in the season at the very beginning.
- 1:48Like I think in Season 1 where Jules is like stabbing at Nate
- 1:51at that party, Season 2 where Nate gets dog walked by Fez.
- 1:54And now in Season 3, actually, everything is shocking and
- 1:58alarming. And I honestly don't know where
- 2:01to start. Like we got Roof cosplaying his
- 2:02Mogga in the beginning. We have that disgusting scene of
- 2:05Faye and Roo trying to take down those substance balloons and all
- 2:10that has come with that. And again, we're going to
- 2:11address that later because that gets into a bigger issue that I
- 2:14have with this show. You have Cassie launching her
- 2:17Only Fans. We have a new pimp character
- 2:19named Alamo that's been announced, and now he has a
- 2:21whole group of strippers that he tried to get ruin on.
- 2:23Like, it's a lot happening all in one episode.
- 2:25And it feels like we did not get a break from like shock value to
- 2:27shock value to shock value. And it's looking like the show
- 2:29is taking a turn to be even darker than it already has been.
- 2:33And I don't know if that's necessarily all going to be in a
- 2:35good way because I fear what's going to end up happening is
- 2:38that it's not going to be dark for the sake of actually telling
- 2:41a dark and compelling story and a mature story in the ways that
- 2:44most other dark dramas do. I fear that this is going to
- 2:48take more of the idol approach. If you remember the Idol, the
- 2:51show that Sam Levinson also worked on, where it's dark and
- 2:53graphic for the sake of his own sort of satisfaction and almost
- 2:57fetish trauma blends. And let's actually talk about
- 3:00that really quick because this episode episode was riddled with
- 3:04fetish content. And if you're unfamiliar with
- 3:05what fetish content is, it's essentially content that is not
- 3:08necessarily explicitly school, but it is content that simulates
- 3:12or at least references different fetishes or kinks that people
- 3:16have essentially. So people that are interested in
- 3:19that sort of thing can consume that kind of content without it
- 3:22explicitly being in a like softcore or hardcore adult
- 3:26cinematography setting. Like we see fetish content all
- 3:29the time on social media where it gets rightfully called out
- 3:31because oftentimes fetish content is unfortunately many
- 3:34times linked with like younger children's content, having it be
- 3:37geared towards children or a seemingly younger audience of
- 3:40things that are seemingly innocuous and innocent,
- 3:43essentially stimulating adult activities.
- 3:45And of course, this is an adult show, but we're seeing very
- 3:47similar things. And let me bust out my notes
- 3:49really quick so that we can run through them all while I was
- 3:51watching, 1 scene that really jumped out to me that was 100%
- 3:54fetish content in my mind was when Rue and Fey were taking
- 3:58those substance balloons, right? We're seeing them having this
- 4:01stuff, these big, big orb shaped things down their throats.
- 4:04And of course, it's filled with a bunch of gagging, a bunch of
- 4:07spit. And we're eventually staying in
- 4:08one scene where they're actually putting their fingers in almost
- 4:10full hands down their throats trying to get it down.
- 4:12And that looks and sounds like something very adult if you
- 4:15watch that scene. Like honestly, that whole scene
- 4:17feels like it was just written explicitly to be fetish content.
- 4:20Because after that, there's like a whole scene of the girls like
- 4:23farting and Putin and essentially sharding themselves
- 4:25afterwards, which also is in its own way, fetish content.
- 4:28Like there are fetishes for them.
- 4:29There are specific groups specifically for those things.
- 4:32And the fact at the end, the thing at the end that really
- 4:36sent me and I was like, Oh my God, this is actually
- 4:38disgusting. And I don't know what anyone was
- 4:40thinking when they were filming or shooting this is that there
- 4:43was this one part of that scene at the very end where Fey comes
- 4:46out and she's like, I had an accident and you can see streaks
- 4:49of Zhu Zhu coming down her leg. First off, why do we need to see
- 4:53that? I know it's HBO, but like crazy.
- 4:56But what makes it worse is that the dog that's living in that
- 4:58house goes up and starts licking the fence Doo Doo from her leg
- 5:03and into her butt. And that my friends, is
- 5:07absolutely disgusting for so many different reasons.
- 5:09Like the layers behind that are honestly so deep.
- 5:12And I know that this is going to try and be explained away by
- 5:14being like this is just like the realities of the situation.
- 5:17Like this is meant to show like how graphic and how violent and
- 5:20dirty these spaces actually are. And this is meant to build
- 5:22awareness for what's going on. I understand that.
- 5:24For one, I get it, But also there is a way that things are
- 5:28presented and a way that things can be adapted on screen to
- 5:31portray these things without essentially fetishizing them.
- 5:34And again, I would be more inclined to see it from that
- 5:37perspective had this been shown in any other show by any other
- 5:40showrunner. And this is where we get back on
- 5:42Sam Levinson, because I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
- 5:44I think the fact that he prides himself on being the sole writer
- 5:46of the show and the fact that he's had a history of making
- 5:49very grotesque and seemingly over the top graphic sexual
- 5:53content that doesn't really contribute to the plot makes
- 5:55they believe that it's a little bit more than that and that the
- 5:57intention is not solely that. Because like even if you think
- 5:59for this season how old the characters are treated, like
- 6:02damn near every single woman in this show is going through some
- 6:05kind of humiliation ritual. Like you got Rue being a
- 6:07substance mule, having the Boo Boo drugs into a strainer and
- 6:09then hanging out with a pimp. And strippers.
- 6:11The fact that there are so many topless strippers in the show.
- 6:13Jules, while not being present in this specific episode, being
- 6:16a sugar baby. Maddie being broke and being
- 6:19essentially A glorified plus one for everything.
- 6:20Cassie, need I say more? Gassy Faye, All the previous
- 6:27aforementioned things and then Lexie and I, as far as I
- 6:30remember, Lexie kind of good. Like I don't think anything is
- 6:33especially crazy. She's living in that same
- 6:35apartment that she was in in one of them days.
- 6:38I saw that tweet on Twitter, and I thought it was so funny
- 6:40because like, yeah, I could so see that for Lexi and the
- 6:43character that she was playing in one of them days.
- 6:45And the buildings do look the same.
- 6:46But I bring all this up to say that, like, this is just some
- 6:48really sick writing on behalf of the women on the show.
- 6:51And the fact that Sam Levinson, we know, has had a history of
- 6:55writing women in this way. Like, think the previous seasons
- 6:57of Euphoria, think The Idol and all the things that, like, Lily
- 7:00Rose Depp had to do on that show and the way that he portrayed
- 7:03her, it's just really sick. And then also getting into stuff
- 7:06that I talked about in the last video and I'm not going to get
- 7:08into here. So if you want to go see that
- 7:10and want to hear us talk about that, definitely go check out
- 7:12that video. But the way that he has
- 7:13historically stolen ideas, aesthetics, vibes would have you
- 7:16from women without really giving them credit for it really just
- 7:19shows the kind of guy that he is and the kind of mind that he
- 7:21has. And I know for a fact that it
- 7:23gets worse because some pictures leaked from future episodes that
- 7:26allegedly show Sidney Sweeney playing Cassie and Cassie is
- 7:30doing clearly some like only fans type stuff dressed as a
- 7:33baby, like in a diaper doing like the happy baby yoga pose
- 7:36with her legs spread. Like again, I understand that
- 7:39this is a show and this is trying to tell a story, but
- 7:41there are ways to go about it. And the fact that it is going
- 7:45this direction is mildly concerning, at least when you
- 7:48know who is at the helm of all this and knowing how things like
- 7:51this have been handled in the past.
- 7:53And while all this is alleged and speculation, it's kind of
- 7:56clear that like no one else is really this show either.
- 7:59Like even now, now that the first episode is out, promotion
- 8:02for this season is abysmal, especially coming from the other
- 8:05castmates. Like you think of the people
- 8:07that were involved in this season would be wanting to
- 8:09promote it more. But based on what I saw as of
- 8:11filming this video, the only one that's really promoting this
- 8:13season is Sidney Sweeney. Like Zendaya herself has not
- 8:15posted anything about this latest season coming out.
- 8:18Like I'm filming this on Monday, but I checked her socials on
- 8:21Sunday. There was nothing that was
- 8:23posted, no main feed, no story, no nothing about this season
- 8:27that just came out. In fact, she's opted to promote
- 8:30the drama instead, which is not an Octa Zendaya.
- 8:32But I think that does tell where things are out, like especially
- 8:35if you look to the clips from the four year premiere, it was
- 8:38it's clear that the cast may not be as cohesive as they were in
- 8:41the past with people dodging pictures and interactions with
- 8:43Sam Levinson to even just dodging interactions with each
- 8:46other. And I'm even thinking about that
- 8:47pop up they did at Coachella to air the first episode at
- 8:50Coachella. And the main person that was
- 8:52promoting that was Chloe Cherry. When there are multiple other
- 8:54cast members that were sighted at Coachella, like they were at
- 8:57the festival. They were just not publicly
- 8:59promoting it, which I think is so wild.
- 9:01Like I know for certain Jacob Allordy was there.
- 9:03I know Labyrinth was definitely there.
- 9:04He wasn't going to show up. But what I'm trying to get at
- 9:06from all this is that it's clear that everyone trying to really
- 9:08distance themselves from the season and just move on.
- 9:11And as a long term fan of Euphoria, that is really sad to
- 9:13see. But it really just shows that we
- 9:16are rolling down a very steep and dark hill.
- 9:20And the show itself just feels different.
- 9:22Like I know it's meant to be more mature.
- 9:23I know that we are no longer in high school and that we're
- 9:25seeing everyone in their adult lives.
- 9:26And don't get me wrong, the show still is entertaining and I'm
- 9:29still going to watch and going to finish the season.
- 9:31But comparing this episode to the ones of past seasons, it
- 9:34just feels like we're watching completely different characters
- 9:36on screen. Like some of these characters I
- 9:38do, I'm not recognized at all. Like Speaking of Jacob, Nate, I
- 9:41don't know who that is. Like it feels like Nate Jacobs
- 9:43underwent a lobotomy in between seasons two and three because he
- 9:46is entirely too chill about everything that's going on.
- 9:49Like he is letting Cassie walk all over him and is just
- 9:52seemingly OK or at least mildly concerned but not really angry
- 9:56at the fact that she wants to create only fans.
- 9:58And again, there's nothing wrong with creating only fans, don't
- 10:00get me wrong. I'm just saying that season 1
- 10:02and 2 Nate would be a lot more angry and a lot more violent
- 10:05about his fiance or future wife wanting to post on only fans.
- 10:10Like let's not forget how we treated Maddie for wearing IMG
- 10:12outfit and the fact that he pulled an actual Pew Pew out on
- 10:15Maddie when she was threatening him about the stuff with jewels.
- 10:18Like this man has a track record of being very emotionally
- 10:20unstable and very prone to violence.
- 10:23And you know, hey, it's just the first episode.
- 10:24Maybe we'll get that explained further as to why he is the way
- 10:27he is in future episodes, But this just seems like a stark
- 10:31shift to the point where it's like, all right, who is this?
- 10:34But a sixth sense is telling me that that's not going to be the
- 10:36case. And that sixth sense is really
- 10:38just the way that Jacob Allordy spoke on his character and his
- 10:42actors on actors interview with Gwyneth Paltrow, essentially
- 10:44alluding to the fact that like, yeah, this is a different guy.
- 10:48And honestly, it might be bad. In fact, it probably will be
- 10:50bad. And of course, he tried to PR
- 10:52recover being like, oh, my performance might be bad.
- 10:54Is your character nicer? I actually think so.
- 10:58I really, I really do think so Whether it works or not, I don't
- 11:01know. There's a, there's a chance that
- 11:03whatever, whatever we've done is just not well, what I've done is
- 11:06not good. I'm.
- 11:07Not sure I'm. Not sure.
- 11:09And if we know one thing about Jacob Lordy is that he is going
- 11:11to be brutally honest about his performance and what he thinks
- 11:14about things. And if he does not like a
- 11:15project and he thinks it's trash, he is going to say so.
- 11:18And this might be him saying so, but we're really just going to
- 11:22have to wait and see. I know that it's only the first
- 11:24episode, but according to the reviews of people who saw the
- 11:27first 3 and gave the season of four out of 10, I don't know how
- 11:31much it's necessarily going to improve again.
- 11:33I'm going to be doing pre show live streams on this channel
- 11:36every single week before the episode airs.
- 11:38I'm not promising weekly episode recaps, but this is the first
- 11:41episode and I feel like this really did shift at least my
- 11:44perspective on how I think things are going to go.
- 11:46Because prior to this first episode and going into this
- 11:48third season, it was looking like things were going to be a
- 11:50train wreck. And for the most part, it's
- 11:52looking like things are going according to plan and are
- 11:55generally going the way that I expected them to go.
- 11:58Well, actually, maybe this might be a little worse.
