- 0:00Hello everybody, welcome back to unlocking the Paradigm Portal.
- 0:03My name is Sarah. So we are jumping back into the
- 0:06hero's journey and a quick recap of where we are.
- 0:09We did the ordinary world Week 1, The life that fits like a
- 0:13shoe that is now a half a size too small.
- 0:15And then there's the call to adventure.
- 0:17That moment that something taps you on the shoulder and says
- 0:20there's more and you know it. So you would assume, obviously
- 0:24having received the call, that the hero answers immediately.
- 0:28Nope, absolutely not. The hero does what every single
- 0:31one of us does when life offers us exactly what we've been
- 0:34asking for. The hero says no.
- 0:38So today, stage 3, the refusal of the call, It's in every movie
- 0:42you've ever loved, and yours looks nothing like it does in
- 0:46the movies. And honestly, your refusal might
- 0:49be the most honest thing about you, if you're able to see it.
- 0:53So in the movies, the refusal is a scene, as in singular it has a
- 0:57beginning, a middle, and a conveniently short end.
- 1:00So Luke Skywalker gets invited to learn the ways of the Force
- 1:04and rescue a Princess. Objectively the best offer
- 1:07anyone on that dust farm has ever received.
- 1:10And what does he say? I can't.
- 1:12I've got responsibilities. The harvest.
- 1:15The freaking harvest, Luke. Dude, the Galaxy is calling and
- 1:19you're worried about space crops?
- 1:21What the heck? And then we go into my personal
- 1:25favorite Lord of the Rings. Frodo tries to hand the ring to
- 1:29literally anyone else in the room and he says I'm not made
- 1:32for perilous quests. Seriously.
- 1:35And then Neo, I just thought of this 1 today as I was working on
- 1:39this The Matrix. Neo is offered the truth about
- 1:42reality itself. And what does he pick initially?
- 1:45His cubicle. And notice how the movies
- 1:49resolve it. The refusal gets overridden by
- 1:51catastrophe. Luke says no and comes home to
- 1:54the farm burning like the story torches the ordinary world.
- 1:58So the hero has nothing left to refuse.
- 2:01And screenwriters call it raising the stakes.
- 2:04But it takes about four minutes of screen time. 4 minutes.
- 2:07Just hold on to that number, because we're about to talk
- 2:10about how long the refusal takes in real life, and it is not 4
- 2:13minutes. So here's the thing about your
- 2:17refusal. In your real life.
- 2:19It doesn't look like refusal. So nobody stands in their
- 2:23kitchen and dramatically declares, no, I should not
- 2:27become who I meant to be. Wouldn't that be easier because
- 2:30at least it's honest. But real refusal is quieter and
- 2:34it's sneakier. And so let me show you how it
- 2:37looks in real life. So refusal dresses up as
- 2:40busyness. Things like, I'd love to, but my
- 2:43schedule is just crazy right now.
- 2:46Every schedule, every moment on it, every week, every month
- 2:50mysteriously is just crazy. The calendar, if you think about
- 2:54it, is the most socially acceptable no ever invented.
- 2:59And refusal also disguises itself as preparation.
- 3:03And you know this person, or you might be this person, God knows,
- 3:07I have struggled with this one. One more certification, one more
- 3:10course, a little more research, a little more preparation.
- 3:14And those of us who have struggled with this, we've been
- 3:17doing this crap for years. And at some point preparation
- 3:20stops being preparation and becomes a very studious hiding
- 3:24place. So refusal also pretends that
- 3:28it's about the timing. Things like when the kids are
- 3:31older, when things settle down after the holidays.
- 3:35Which holidays? It's unclear.
- 3:37All of them. It could be any of them.
- 3:39Someday is where callings go to wait, and some of them wait an
- 3:43entire lifetime. And other times refusal pretends
- 3:47to be realism. So this, this one's the most
- 3:49respectable of all, to be honest.
- 3:51It's things that come up like be practical.
- 3:54People like me don't do things like that, or it's too late,
- 3:58it's too risky, it's too expensive, whatever it is for
- 4:01you. And it sounds like wisdom.
- 4:04And sometimes it even quotes your bank account.
- 4:06But listen closely and you can hear the fear underneath, doing
- 4:10a very good impression of an accountant.
- 4:13And in the movies, the refusal lasts 1 scene.
- 4:16But in real life, the refusal can last decades.
- 4:19Hell, it can last your entire life.
- 4:21You can build that entire life inside the refusal, and you can
- 4:25build a decent one, even a respectable 1.
- 4:28And it's still a half a size too small.
- 4:31Now here's where I break ranks with every motivational poster
- 4:35ever printed. I'm not going to tell you the
- 4:37refusal is weakness and I'm not going to yell feel the fear and
- 4:41do it anyway. Though I have used that
- 4:43reference of feeling the fear and moving with it.
- 4:47But here's the truth. The refusal is information.
- 4:51And if you know me, you know I say everything is just data
- 4:54collection so you don't refuse small things.
- 4:58Nobody agonizes for 10 years over whether to try a new
- 5:01grocery store. The size of your refusal is a
- 5:04direct measurement of the size of what's calling you.
- 5:07Big no means big stakes. Your resistance isn't blocking
- 5:12the treasure, it's standing directly on top of it, pointing
- 5:15down. And the refusal isn't coming
- 5:18from your mind either, which is why you can't logic your way
- 5:21through it. You've tried.
- 5:22I guarantee you've tried. You've probably made the pros
- 5:25and cons list and the pros won. You still didn't move because
- 5:30the no doesn't live in your reasoning.
- 5:32It lives in your body. It's the chest that tightens
- 5:36when you almost say it out loud, the throat that closes around
- 5:40the announcement, the sudden overwhelming need to clean the
- 5:43entire house the moment you sit down to begin.
- 5:47Now, that's not laziness. That's a nervous system that
- 5:49learned somewhere along the line that being visible is dangerous,
- 5:54that wanting big means losing big, that safety lives inside
- 5:59the fence. So your body isn't sabotaging
- 6:02the call. It's protecting you from
- 6:03something it remembers, even if you don't.
- 6:07So the move isn't to bulldoze the refusal.
- 6:09Bodo bulldoze refusals, come back with reinforcements.
- 6:14The move is to get curious about it, to sit with the no, and to
- 6:18ask it what it's guarding, because the refusal, honored and
- 6:23heard, will eventually tell you exactly what it needs in order
- 6:26to open the gate. Refusals don't dissolve from
- 6:29pressure, they dissolve from safety.
- 6:33So one more thing, and I'd it's one that I'd tattoo somewhere
- 6:37visible if I felt like getting more tattoos.
- 6:40In the movies. The stakes get raised once farms
- 6:43burn, hero leaves next act. Life is more patient than that
- 6:48and more persistent. Life escalates, so first the
- 6:52call comes as a whisper, a restlessness, maybe a Daydream
- 6:55that keeps coming back. It's easy to ignore, so we do
- 6:58it. Then it comes as a tap.
- 7:02The job gets a little grayer. The Sunday nights get a little
- 7:05heavier. Something that used to fit
- 7:07starts kind of pinching in. Then a knock, then a pounding.
- 7:12And for some of us, ask me how I know, it eventually arrives as a
- 7:16brick through the window. The health event, I've had
- 7:19multiple of those. The collapse, I've had multiple
- 7:22of those. The loss that rearranges
- 7:25everything, I've had multiple of those.
- 7:28The moment the ordinary world burns down on its own without
- 7:32your permission because you wouldn't leave voluntarily.
- 7:35I refer to this as the shift or be shifted.
- 7:38And if you don't shift when the call comes in, eventually, if
- 7:41you keep refusing it, you're going to get kicked off that
- 7:45ledge. So I'm not saying this to scare
- 7:48you. I'm saying it because there's
- 7:50mercy and knowing it, you get to choose which volume you answer.
- 7:54The whisper and the brick are the same message, just one of
- 7:58them costs a lot less. So the refusal is universal.
- 8:04It's in every story because it's in every body.
- 8:08Yours doesn't look like a movie scene.
- 8:10It looks like busyness, preparation, timing, realism.
- 8:13It isn't weakness, it's a bodyguard pointing at the
- 8:17treasure. And the call doesn't give up, it
- 8:19just gets louder. So your homework, if you're
- 8:22brave, name 1 refusal just to yourself.
- 8:26Finish this sentence. I've been saying no to dot dot
- 8:31dot insert your answer. And then, and this is the
- 8:35important part, don't do anything about it yet.
- 8:39Just notice where you feel the no in your body.
- 8:43That's the doorway. And that's where we're going to
- 8:45go next. So next episode is the mentor.
- 8:49What happens when the no finally cracks and why?
- 8:53Your mentor, whoever it is or whatever it is that shows up,
- 8:57probably won't have a beard and a staff, though.
- 8:59How cool would that be? Like if Gandalf showed up on my
- 9:03my my front steps, I would probably lose my mind in
- 9:06excitement. That would be awesome.
- 9:09But alas, that may most likely not happen.
- 9:12So until next time, come home to your body.
- 9:15It's been keeping the light on. Listen to it.
- 9:18It knows far more than your mind does.
- 9:20So have a wonderful day and I will be back next time.
