- 0:00Welcome back , traders and market enthusiasts , to Spy Trader , your goto podcast for navigating the unpredictable currents of the financial seas !
- 0:09I'm your host , Captain Cashflow , and it's 6 am on Tuesday , August 26th , 2025 , Pacific time .
- 0:18We've got a lot to unpack this morning , so let's dive straight in!The US stock market is showing a fascinating mix of resilience and caution right now .
- 0:28On one hand , we saw the Dow Jones Industrial Average hit its first record high of 2025 on Friday , and the S&P 500 rallied 0.29% , shaking off four days of losses .
- 0:42The S&P 500 , in fact , has climbed nearly 15% yearoveryear as of July .
- 0:50But hold your horses , because US stock futures are signaling a slightly lower open today , following a red day for major averages on Monday , with the Dow falling 349 points .
- 1:02It's a complex picture , folks .
- 1:04Macroeconomically , we're looking at what some are calling an ' economic mirage .
- 1:09' The US economy expanded at an annualized rate of 3.0% in Q2 2025 , a nice bounce from Q1's 0.5% contraction .
- 1:20Consumer spending was up 1.4% .
- 1:23Sounds good , right ?
- 1:24But much of this growth was due to a big drop in imports , possibly tariffinduced , rather than robust private sector demand , which actually saw investment plunge by 15.6% .
- 1:37Inflation remains a persistent headache , with annual headline CPI at 2.86% and Core CPI at 3.02% in August , both still above the Fed's 2% target .
- 1:50The labor market is also showing signs of cooling , with the unemployment rate ticking up to 4.2% in July , and Fed Chair Jerome Powell noting an ' unusual combination of soft labor demand and declining labor supply .
- 2:04'Now , for the big news .
- 2:06The Federal Reserve , after holding rates steady for five straight meetings , is signaling a likely rate cut in September , according to Chair Powell at Jackson Hole .
- 2:18This dovish pivot has markets pricing in a high probability of a September cut , and Morgan Stanley is even anticipating two 25basispoint cuts in 2025 .
- 2:28This is generally good news for stocks , as lower borrowing costs can fuel growth .
- 2:34However , political interference is shaking things up .
- 2:37President Trump's announcement to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook , citing allegations , has raised serious concerns about the Fed's independence and unsettled Wall Street .
- 2:49On the trade front , Trump is escalating tariff threats , with substantial additional tariffs on countries with digital taxes and a whopping 200% tariff on China if it restricts magnet exports .
- 3:03The US also hit India with a 50% tariff effective tomorrow , and the 'de minimis' exemption , which allowed small shipments to avoid duties , is being suspended for all countries on August 29th .
- 3:17This means all shipments , regardless of value , will now face duties , potentially impacting supply chains and consumer prices .
- 3:25And what about our AI darlings ?
- 3:28The AI sector , which has been a major market driver , saw some pressure earlier in the week .
- 3:33The ' Magnificent Seven ' stocks experienced a threeday selloff amidst concerns over future profitability , stretched valuations , and research suggesting 95% of organizations see no returns from AI .
- 3:48Even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman cautioned about a potential AI bubble .
- 3:53Sectorwise , technology , spearheaded by those ' Magnificent Seven ' like Nvidia and Apple , has dominated the bull market .
- 4:01But keep an eye on smallcap stocks !
- 4:04The Russell 2000 Index has advanced about 5% in the past month , actually outperforming the Nasdaq 100 .
- 4:12This is partly due to the anticipation of Fed rate cuts , which historically give smallcaps a boost .
- 4:19On the company front , the biggest event this week is Nvidia's ( NVDA ) fiscal 2026 secondquarter earnings report , due after market close on Wednesday , August 27th .
- 4:32Analysts are projecting huge growth , with earnings per share up 48.5% and revenue up 53.1% .
- 4:42As the world's largest marketcapitalized firm , Nvidia's results will be a major test for the entire AI and tech sectors and could significantly move the broader market .
- 4:53Nvidia also just made its new ' robot brain , ' Jetson AGX Thor , generally available .
- 5:00Beyond that , most of the ' Magnificent Seven ' delivered betterthanexpected Q2 earnings , though Tesla missed .
- 5:08And a quick shoutout to Interactive Brokers ( IBKR ) , whose shares are gaining after its inclusion in the S&P 500 , replacing Walgreens Boots Alliance .
- 5:18Also , EchoStar ( SATS ) stock is soaring after selling wireless spectrum to AT&T ( T ) for 23 billion .
- 5:27So , what's a savvy investor to do in this landscape of cautious optimism , a dovish Fed , and escalating trade tensions ?
- 5:36Here are Captain Cashflow's recommendations : First , for broad market exposure with a growth tilt , consider the Invesco QQQ Trust ( QQQ ) for its concentration in the techheavy Nasdaq100 , especially if you believe in the longterm AI trend , but be aware of its volatility , particularly around Nvidia's earnings .
- 6:00For broader exposure to the entire US market , the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) , iShares CORE S&P 500 ETF ( IVV ) , or Vanguard S&P 500 ETF ( VOO ) are solid core holdings .
- 6:17Given the recent outperformance of smallcaps and their historical benefit from rate cuts , the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF ( VTI ) is an excellent choice for truly comprehensive market coverage , including small and midcaps .
- 6:32Second , for stability and income , with the Fed signaling rate cuts , bond prices may rise .
- 6:38So , funds like the iShares Core U.S.
- 6:40Aggregate Bond ETF ( AGG ) or the Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF ( BND ) , which hold diversified US investmentgrade bonds , become more attractive .
- 6:52Third , for diversification and a hedge against uncertainty , the SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) has advanced recently amid a weaker US dollar and political uncertainty .
- 7:04Gold can act as a hedge against market volatility and geopolitical risks , which are elevated with current tariff threats and political pressure on the Fed .
- 7:13You could also keep an eye on the Vanguard Real Estate ETF ( VNQ ) ; while real estate has faced challenges , a dovish Fed and anticipated rate cuts could eventually provide some support , but monitor this closely for signs of a turnaround given the recent downturn in investment .
- 7:32Finally , for those with a higher risk tolerance , consider specific stock opportunities .
- 7:38Nvidia ( NVDA ) , ahead of its Q2 earnings on August 27th , presents a highstakes play .
- 7:45Strong results could lead to further gains , but any miss could trigger significant declines due to its huge market cap and influence .
- 7:53If you're looking to capitalize on the AI trend directly , NVDA is the one to watch , but proceed with caution .
- 8:01Interactive Brokers ( IBKR ) is gaining from its S&P 500 inclusion , which often brings increased institutional buying .
- 8:11And EchoStar ( SATS ) has seen a significant jump after its 23 billion spectrum sale to AT T .
- 8:19These companyspecific events can be powerful drivers , but always do your homework on the longterm implications .
- 8:27In summary , we're navigating a market that's got strong underlying growth in parts , particularly tech , but is also facing headwinds from persistent inflation , an ' economic mirage' GDP , and significant geopolitical and political interference risks .
- 8:44The Fed's dovish pivot is a major catalyst , potentially broadening market leadership beyond just the ' Magnificent Seven ' to smallcaps .
- 8:53Diversification is key , blending broad market exposure with fixed income and alternative assets to weather the storms .
- 9:02That's all for this edition of Spy Trader .
- 9:04Keep those eyes peeled , stay sharp , and I'll catch you next time !
