- 1:17SPEAKER_09: This is a really fun interview.
- 1:19SPEAKER_08: Fully man, it's it's almost poetic.
- 1:21SPEAKER_08: You know, it's spring, it's the rebirth of things, just like Texas Tech Basketball, baby.
- 1:25SPEAKER_09: Yes, on the rise, coming up, stay humble.
- 1:30SPEAKER_09: This this is I'm fired up.
- 1:32SPEAKER_09: I'm fired up for Coach Mac and uh stick around to the end of the episode to really get Norrence's take on what the best nickname for him is.
- 1:39SPEAKER_09: Uh, but yes, here, let's just go ahead and swing it to it.
- 1:43SPEAKER_09: They don't want to hear us anymore.
- 1:45SPEAKER_09: This is our interview with Norrence Odiase.
- 1:49SPEAKER_09: Okay, we are here with a very special guest.
- 1:52SPEAKER_09: We have wanted Norwin's on the podcast for a long time.
- 1:55SPEAKER_09: He's obviously you all know him if you're listening to this episode, you know, current baller for the Texas Legends, a Texas tech legend in of himself, host of the Mind Bully podcast, Norrence Odiase.
- 2:06SPEAKER_09: What's up, man?
- 2:08SPEAKER_04: What's good?
- 2:08SPEAKER_04: Thank you guys for having me.
- 2:10SPEAKER_04: Thank you, thank you.
- 2:11SPEAKER_04: I take the legend, I take that legend word really with a grain of salt, bro.
- 2:16SPEAKER_04: I'm literally just a person.
- 2:17SPEAKER_04: I always say this, and I will never not say this.
- 2:20SPEAKER_04: I'm just a person, but I'm grateful.
- 2:22SPEAKER_04: Thank you guys for having me on.
- 2:24SPEAKER_08: It's always great having a fellow podcaster on.
- 2:27SPEAKER_08: I mean, that's that's what we're that's that's obviously what he's known for at the at the end of the day, right?
- 2:31SPEAKER_08: I mean, it's uh a first and foremost podcaster, second professional coach picker, then professional basketball player.
- 2:40SPEAKER_08: There we go.
- 2:40SPEAKER_08: I like that.
- 2:41SPEAKER_08: I like that.
- 2:41SPEAKER_04: I like that.
- 2:42SPEAKER_04: Now we're talking.
- 2:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's cool.
- 2:44SPEAKER_04: It's cool to be on with two other pod pod guys.
- 2:48SPEAKER_04: So I like it.
- 2:49SPEAKER_09: Absolutely, man.
- 2:50SPEAKER_09: Um, well, first off, how you doing?
- 2:53SPEAKER_09: I know you've had a hectic, uh, hectic last couple weeks being on the committee, uh, you know, doing your thing with the Texas Legends and that season coming to an end and everything.
- 3:01SPEAKER_09: But what's going on, man?
- 3:03SPEAKER_09: How you doing?
- 3:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's been a whirlwind.
- 3:06SPEAKER_04: It's been a whirlwind, bro, because of this.
- 3:10SPEAKER_04: Literally everything that you just said.
- 3:12SPEAKER_04: Like, I played in a team in Greensboro and then got cut literally hours later.
- 3:16SPEAKER_04: I got picked up by Texas Legends.
- 3:19SPEAKER_04: It's a blessing to play at home my last month for like 12 games, traveling to California right when I come back, then come back, then travel here.
- 3:27SPEAKER_04: It was crazy.
- 3:28SPEAKER_04: And then I get a call from Kirby asking, Oh, do you want to be on the pick committee?
- 3:32SPEAKER_04: I'm like, duh, what the heck?
- 3:33SPEAKER_04: Why wouldn't I want to do that?
- 3:34SPEAKER_04: That's an honor, whatever.
- 3:36SPEAKER_04: And then that process was I mean, bro, like you you see it online and you see one thing, and you see comments of oh, who's gonna be our next coach?
- 3:45SPEAKER_04: And you have no idea how much work, how much deliberation, how much like really goes into that.
- 3:52SPEAKER_04: And you know, so I got to see and and um experience from that point of view, which I'm grateful for, and and we're here now.
- 4:00SPEAKER_09: So, yeah, for sure.
- 4:02SPEAKER_09: I mean, you I know you talked about it on your podcast, Mind Bully.
- 4:05SPEAKER_09: It's a fantastic, fantastic podcast.
- 4:07SPEAKER_09: Like, if thank you, please.
- 4:08SPEAKER_09: If if y'all don't if y'all know about it, if y'all haven't listened to it, listen to it, it's awesome.
- 4:12SPEAKER_09: Uh, a lot of stuff hard hitting, not just Texas Tech, but like actual real stuff that matters, which I think is really, really cool.
- 4:19SPEAKER_08: But yeah, if you're not subscribed, I mean what are you doing?
- 4:21SPEAKER_08: It norms actually talks about real stuff on there, not just dumb runarounds that we do that you can forget the next day, but he'll he I really do love it, man.
- 4:31SPEAKER_08: I I really love your pep talks, dude.
- 4:32SPEAKER_08: You're like you're like the world's best cheerleader, man.
- 4:34SPEAKER_08: I mean that like sincerely, it's awesome.
- 4:36SPEAKER_04: I appreciate it.
- 4:37SPEAKER_04: I appreciate that.
- 4:38SPEAKER_04: Honestly, that's cool to hear from somebody else because literally, I I recorded it one this morning, I was just anxious and I'm in my head.
- 4:44SPEAKER_04: I'm like, does anybody care about this?
- 4:46SPEAKER_04: Like, I'm and I I speak my thoughts, and for your thoughts to actually hit home with somebody else, I think it's perfect.
- 4:53SPEAKER_04: But what you guys do is is valuable too.
- 4:56SPEAKER_04: Entertainment is valuable, everybody holds their cards, everybody has a niche, so I like it too.
- 5:01SPEAKER_08: So it's just cool that that you know, a guy that's you know, a living this this amazing life, he has the same doubts and problems that you know a high school teacher does, or uh, or a field rep that Steven is.
- 5:13SPEAKER_08: You know, it's just like you know, normal dudes that all go through the same thing, so it's just really cool hearing someone vocalize it.
- 5:17SPEAKER_08: So I just wanted to give my sincere hat to T-Man.
- 5:20SPEAKER_04: Thank you.
- 5:21SPEAKER_04: I appreciate that.
- 5:22SPEAKER_04: That's cool.
- 5:22SPEAKER_04: Thank you.
- 5:23SPEAKER_09: Yeah, and so you talked about it on your podcast already, but like you know, when you really look at it, you're one of four people that really came in and were were a part of this new coach for this great university that we all went to and we all enjoyed very much.
- 5:37SPEAKER_09: But how how does that feel to when you look back and you know you're there with the AD, you're there with the head football coach, you're there with one of the biggest donors we got.
- 5:46SPEAKER_09: I mean, how did that whole thing feel for you?
- 5:48SPEAKER_04: Man, man, bro.
- 5:49SPEAKER_04: At first, I'm I didn't understand it.
- 5:52SPEAKER_04: I guess I understood it and it was an honor, obviously.
- 5:55SPEAKER_04: But I like I was just like, okay, like I'm still in my head of okay, let's get it right.
- 5:59SPEAKER_04: But I didn't step out and see it from a different lens, like get out the hell out of my own way and be like, actually, this is a big deal.
- 6:06SPEAKER_04: This is actually a huge deal.
- 6:07SPEAKER_04: Until everybody kept saying it.
- 6:09SPEAKER_04: Even our former coach, who everybody hates, I I I know why, but I still have a relationship with.
- 6:15SPEAKER_04: He calls me and he's like, No, that's a big deal.
- 6:17SPEAKER_04: Like, congrats.
- 6:17SPEAKER_04: And people are calling me around the country.
- 6:19SPEAKER_04: And so I start looking at it.
- 6:21SPEAKER_04: I'm like, Whoa, that I could actually is a big deal for it's an honor to pick the next coach, the leader to lead us to where we want to go.
- 6:28SPEAKER_04: And so I I just, you know, I kind of at first came in there, like, okay, you know, the negative thoughts, the negative voice, my mind bleed comes and like, okay, I'm humble, humble, but whatever, people love me.
- 6:40SPEAKER_04: Okay, so they just use a name that people love, and that's why he's on here.
- 6:44SPEAKER_04: That voice came, but I'm like, nah, actually, in those rooms, I'm like, I'm actually really needed here, like, actually needed.
- 6:51SPEAKER_04: And it it was it was kind of cool to kind of see my value being me, yeah, outside lens or inside lens, being inside my shoes.
- 7:00SPEAKER_04: I'm like, okay, as we start speaking, as we start going and moving through candidates, and I I was very much so needed.
- 7:06SPEAKER_04: So it's like, oh, I know why they picked me, I know why I was chosen.
- 7:09SPEAKER_04: Like it all clicked, so that was really cool, and it it was a blessing for sure.
- 7:13SPEAKER_09: You yeah, you really just look back at it and you're like, I was one of four people to help choose this new head coach and have a real voice in it.
- 7:20SPEAKER_09: But I I'm I'm curious because you have four different people on this committee, you know, you got your energy guys like yourself and and Joey Maguire, you know, you got a more grounded kind of done this a million times with Kirby, uh, and then you got the big money donor approach with Womble.
- 7:37SPEAKER_09: Was there ever like differing opinions between the four of y'all?
- 7:41SPEAKER_09: Was there were you all kind of on the same page during the whole process?
- 7:44SPEAKER_09: What was that dynamic?
- 7:45SPEAKER_04: 100%, 100% different appearance, uh opinions on on certain things, and that's the great thing about it.
- 7:51SPEAKER_04: It's like we all care about this university and this program so much that we don't care about our feelings or somebody else's feelings.
- 7:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we're respectful, but if somebody has some, they said it, and we didn't sugarcoat like uh like nah, this is time, like a sense of urgency.
- 8:07SPEAKER_04: We're doing it in March when everybody's playing, we're charged up, we should be playing.
- 8:11SPEAKER_04: Like, there's no time for uh, I think, and then yeah, because he says, No, why do you think so?
- 8:16SPEAKER_04: Where did you get that from?
- 8:17SPEAKER_04: What are your references?
- 8:19SPEAKER_04: Like, like step one, step two, does it connect with who we are, what we do?
- 8:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah, if it does, okay, let's go to the next step.
- 8:25SPEAKER_04: But if it doesn't, why are we even talking?
- 8:27SPEAKER_04: Uh, has he gone far?
- 8:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we looked at a ton of stuff and we challenged each other, and that's the thing.
- 8:34SPEAKER_04: I think you know, each member uh on that committee definitely the the main thing that I took out of it, man, like it's so funny on Twitter.
- 8:44SPEAKER_04: You think you know, like uh and one thing, but then behind the scenes, these guys really, really, really care.
- 8:52SPEAKER_04: Like they really really care.
- 8:53SPEAKER_04: A Dusty Womble who has all the money, who could be like I'm getting my guy no matter what.
- 9:00SPEAKER_04: Y'all gonna listen to me, is literally sitting there like the most humble, like, okay, yes, like listening.
- 9:07SPEAKER_04: I'm like, bro, like it it changed my.
- 9:11SPEAKER_04: Obviously, I already had a relationship with Dusty and Joey Maguire.
- 9:15SPEAKER_04: I strengthened that, and obviously I had a long-lasting relationship with Kirby, still do, but like just like bro, these guys actually really care.
- 9:23SPEAKER_04: And and so it's interesting to see on Twitter other people like, oh, why is he?
- 9:27SPEAKER_04: Oh, why is he like, bro, you have no freaking clue.
- 9:30SPEAKER_04: Like, we're going back, we're on this secret group message.
- 9:33SPEAKER_04: Like, we couldn't text, we couldn't call, we couldn't IG because somebody, you know, that stuff gets out quick, leaks get out, whatever.
- 9:41SPEAKER_04: And so we're on this um secret group chat that like disappears the messages.
- 9:46SPEAKER_04: It was so whenever we have a thought, I mean 2 a.m.
- 9:49SPEAKER_04: in the morning, anything, somebody chimes in, and then we look at it, we go into it, it and then we set up a meeting, we call, and it was so much like it, like a movie, bro.
- 9:58SPEAKER_04: It it was it was really cool.
- 10:00SPEAKER_04: I'm actually sad it's over because like those guys are really cool, like we're they're guys, bro.
- 10:06SPEAKER_04: Think about it.
- 10:07SPEAKER_04: Everyone in this group is a millionaire, everyone has done well for himself, everyone's way older than me.
- 10:13SPEAKER_04: You know, like they're guys, just like it's really cool.
- 10:16SPEAKER_04: It's actually really cool.
- 10:18SPEAKER_08: So, I mean, I think that's really awesome to hear from people that uh unfortunately are behind the closed doors on that.
- 10:24SPEAKER_08: Um, I think most of us really look to you as really our ambassador, you know, it's like the the and the everybody's ambassador, we kind of see you that way.
- 10:32SPEAKER_08: Like Norren's is our guy, it gets an extra much class of 2018 represent.
- 10:37SPEAKER_06: Okay, first and first and foremost.
- 10:39SPEAKER_08: But um, dude, that's that's so cool to hear.
- 10:42SPEAKER_08: So, did y'all like have to get together and then make a checklist of what you all wanted?
- 10:47SPEAKER_08: Like, was that really a thing?
- 10:48SPEAKER_08: Like, you can like if you're like building the perfect coach out of Play-Doh, and is that is that what happened?
- 10:53SPEAKER_08: Did y'all like to like okay needs this and this and this?
- 10:55SPEAKER_08: Or no?
- 10:56SPEAKER_04: Without saying those, without saying those exact words, kind of, because in our first Zoom meeting, we set stone.
- 11:03SPEAKER_04: What are our values?
- 11:04SPEAKER_04: What are our core values at Texas Tech?
- 11:06SPEAKER_04: What do we want to preserve?
- 11:07SPEAKER_04: What are we, what are some pinpoints that we didn't have the year before that we need in the next coach?
- 11:12SPEAKER_04: I feel like the leadership lacked.
- 11:14SPEAKER_04: I feel like the the guys didn't play with a toughness that we know that we are in Texas Tech and everything that we stand for, the standard of excellence, not even on the court, but off the court in the community, on the in the classroom with fans, just those, those different types of things um all played a part.
- 11:30SPEAKER_04: You know, relationships was also a piece.
- 11:33SPEAKER_04: Um, player relationship with coach was also a piece.
- 11:36SPEAKER_04: There's so much behind the scenes that was a piece that you know we wanted to make sure that we had in in the next coach.
- 11:42SPEAKER_04: The main thing really was standard of excellence of winning.
- 11:46SPEAKER_04: Like, do you have your mindset on winning?
- 11:49SPEAKER_04: We made it a point to it.
- 11:51SPEAKER_04: It was huge for me to hear championships because again, this ain't the old Texas Tech.
- 11:56SPEAKER_04: We went to the final four, Elite Eight, those type of runs.
- 11:59SPEAKER_04: The bar is high.
- 12:00SPEAKER_04: New facilities, backing from donors, backing from an athletic department, uh, the best fans in the country.
- 12:06SPEAKER_04: This is a top 10 position.
- 12:08SPEAKER_04: So it's like we we don't go into this search thinking of the old, just trying to get no.
- 12:13SPEAKER_04: It's like I told them this from the very jump, the deck, the number one message, the number one zoom, the first start.
- 12:20SPEAKER_04: They announced the candidates.
- 12:22SPEAKER_04: Yay, everybody's kind of, but when we locked in, we locked in.
- 12:24SPEAKER_04: I told them our final four group, yes, I it's flattering to me.
- 12:29SPEAKER_04: Everybody's like, Yeah, you're the team.
- 12:31SPEAKER_04: I said, I don't want that to be a talking point.
- 12:35SPEAKER_04: Yes, it's always gonna be a talking point, but I don't want I want it to be a stepping stone.
- 12:39SPEAKER_04: Let's finish the deal.
- 12:40SPEAKER_04: We didn't finish it.
- 12:42SPEAKER_04: So let's find a leader that's capable of finishing it, not only capable, but says it, calls it out.
- 12:46SPEAKER_04: When everybody thinks there's no way they can get there, they were just ninth place in the Big 12.
- 12:51SPEAKER_04: Okay, we don't want a leader that thinks like them or thinks like fans.
- 12:56SPEAKER_04: We want a leader that has a vision and can get everybody like on one accord to that vision.
- 13:00SPEAKER_09: So yeah, no, that I mean that's a great, that's a great approach because I and you said it on your on your mind bully podcast that you know it's the guys that came before you that you really you know that build up those stepping stones for y'all to get to where you got, and then it's your job to be that stepping stone for the next guy and the next piece, and so you're getting a real chance right here to actually you know fulfill that and grab a guy who you think can take you to that next stop.
- 13:28SPEAKER_09: Um, you know, you mentioned guys like Todrick and uh Jay Crockett and all those guys that came before you.
- 13:32SPEAKER_09: That's uh that's a humbling deal to do that I you know, not everybody has that kind of mindset.
- 13:38SPEAKER_09: So I appreciate that from a tech fan's perspective.
- 13:41SPEAKER_04: It's just the truth.
- 13:42SPEAKER_04: There's so many, you know, as a tech fan, you said 2018.
- 13:46SPEAKER_04: There's it's so easy now that we're here, we're a different program.
- 13:49SPEAKER_04: Oh, just to forget, and those guys forget like, no, like you have to forget where we came from.
- 13:55SPEAKER_04: We're going, yeah, but like this is a whole lineage of players and what they instilled and what we took.
- 14:01SPEAKER_04: Oh, I saw a Clark or a Tadrick work this way, I'm gonna work that way.
- 14:05SPEAKER_04: I don't care if they're not the best player.
- 14:07SPEAKER_04: Like, those are my leaders, I'm gonna follow them.
- 14:09SPEAKER_04: Okay, now it's my time to lead.
- 14:11SPEAKER_04: Take on my team, those are gonna follow me.
- 14:12SPEAKER_04: That's how it should be.
- 14:14SPEAKER_04: And I think in these years, that past year, there was a disconnect on that.
- 14:17SPEAKER_04: And and it's just on the leadership to get us back and on the right track.
- 14:21SPEAKER_08: I think I think it's really cool to hear that from you because it just it seems so natural to you.
- 14:25SPEAKER_08: Um, Stephen Hard kind of touching on it before, you like you really represent like Texas Tech's transition as a player, like uh from 2014 to 2018, like the glow up that you as a player had and that the program really had.
- 14:38SPEAKER_08: Like, y'all really showed the university what this can be.
- 14:41SPEAKER_08: Like, you you you built on the past and like really showed uh what this can what this can happen, and that really kind of set a new standard.
- 14:49SPEAKER_08: Y'all really set that new standard to go from.
- 14:50SPEAKER_08: And I do love that, like, you know, now that that standard's set, you kind of keep building on top of that.
- 14:54SPEAKER_08: Like, you of all people should know that, which is weird, which is really cool hearing from you.
- 14:57SPEAKER_08: So it's like just now naturally, you put that together really well.
- 15:00SPEAKER_08: That's cool to have you on the committee for that.
- 15:02SPEAKER_04: Thank you.
- 15:03SPEAKER_04: No, I I mean it was important, bro.
- 15:05SPEAKER_04: It was important.
- 15:06SPEAKER_04: So I'm glad I'm glad I was on there again.
- 15:08SPEAKER_04: I it it's one thing to hear.
- 15:10SPEAKER_04: Um, oh, he's on the committee.
- 15:12SPEAKER_04: Many people won't know this.
- 15:13SPEAKER_04: I'm literally saying it because it's the truth.
- 15:15SPEAKER_04: I probably talk the most, I'm telling you, yeah, with candidates.
- 15:19SPEAKER_04: I think Grant he said it in the press conference or the the welcome.
- 15:23SPEAKER_04: He said, like, he gave me a hard time.
- 15:25SPEAKER_04: I literally did.
- 15:26SPEAKER_04: I gave all these coaches a hard time.
- 15:28SPEAKER_04: Like, I'm like, picture we're at like a conference room and he's at the head of the table.
- 15:33SPEAKER_04: Every candidate's at the head of the table in the different locations that we did it at.
- 15:37SPEAKER_04: And I'm literally like right there, like on his right, to the point of we switched location to one of the candidates.
- 15:44SPEAKER_04: And I kind of wanted to sit like by one of the turn turnkey was like the third party that made the agents, uh, fixed with the coaches and the agents fixed with us.
- 15:53SPEAKER_04: That third party.
- 15:54SPEAKER_04: I was sitting by one of the ladies, and she was like, No, what you doing?
- 15:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you go right there, get in your spot.
- 16:00SPEAKER_04: We need you.
- 16:00SPEAKER_04: I'm like, dang, like, because you know, the mind believed the negative voice, like, dang, let me just I I, you know, even if you did it, you're still like, huh.
- 16:07SPEAKER_04: But I'm like, no, I gotta, it doesn't matter about my feelings right now, it's my duty.
- 16:11SPEAKER_04: So, yeah, so it was it was cool.
- 16:14SPEAKER_09: So now you don't have to name names here.
- 16:17SPEAKER_09: I I know that that's a heavy process and all that stuff is uh in the past now that we have our guy, but was was there candidates that just straight up bombed their interview, or y'all knew kind of in the first like five minutes that it wasn't gonna be a good fit?
- 16:30SPEAKER_09: Was there any of those?
- 16:31SPEAKER_09: 100.
- 16:33SPEAKER_04: Oh 100, and it's so funny because fans will keep naming these names the different names, and uh in my head, it's just like 100.
- 16:44SPEAKER_04: There was a candidate, like different styles, but I'm like uh job interview like every other job interview.
- 16:51SPEAKER_04: Would you drop a bunch of curse words in your interview?
- 16:55SPEAKER_04: I don't think so.
- 16:56SPEAKER_04: It was almost comical.
- 16:57SPEAKER_04: Like, we were like one of the one of the turnkey ladies, the third party, she looked at me like she's cool.
- 17:03SPEAKER_04: She looked at me, it was almost last.
- 17:04SPEAKER_04: Like, I'm like, what is he doing?
- 17:06SPEAKER_04: Like that's what I'm saying.
- 17:08SPEAKER_04: Everybody was actually a real person.
- 17:10SPEAKER_04: And after we were like, because one of these candidates, he had a he had a chance to really like show us something, you know, show us something different, have us, you know, he gave us a lot to think about, but like the way he approached it, you could tell he didn't understand.
- 17:23SPEAKER_04: He didn't understand the magnitude of what we do.
- 17:26SPEAKER_04: It's like he just oh, I need a job, head job, oh, it fits for me.
- 17:30SPEAKER_04: But what about us?
- 17:30SPEAKER_04: So, why are you good for us?
- 17:33SPEAKER_04: It was a lot, but nah, it it's so funny that yes, yes, the answer, yes.
- 17:39SPEAKER_08: Can I ask a really stupid question, real quick?
- 17:41SPEAKER_08: Like, so do y'all like fly out to their locations, or do you all like meet in this like neutral secret lair, or like what what what what happens?
- 17:51SPEAKER_04: We fly out, yeah.
- 17:53SPEAKER_04: Okay, gotcha.
- 17:54SPEAKER_08: I didn't know it was like, all right, here's a secret note, meet here at 9 p.m.
- 17:58SPEAKER_08: at this coordinates, latitude, longitude.
- 18:01SPEAKER_04: Like we fly out, they fly out.
- 18:03SPEAKER_04: It's it's uh yeah, we fly out, they fly.
- 18:06SPEAKER_04: It wasn't no go to McDonald's or whatever.
- 18:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:10SPEAKER_04: It was none of that.
- 18:11SPEAKER_04: It was none of that.
- 18:12SPEAKER_09: Yeah, no, yeah, probably a bunch more professional, but you're also dealing with guys, a lot of them currently have jobs, you know, and so you don't want to get in the way, including the guy who's now our including the guy who's now our head coach.
- 18:25SPEAKER_09: You're trying to, you know, court him at the same time that he's you know trying to finish the season with his telling you, man, that part made it so interesting.
- 18:33SPEAKER_04: That's the learning curve.
- 18:35SPEAKER_04: Man, you had to be pin pinned to a T.
- 18:39SPEAKER_04: Shut your mouth, close it.
- 18:42SPEAKER_04: Like, I'm engaging on Twitter.
- 18:44SPEAKER_04: I usually chime in like I to the point where fans were literally sending me screenshots of people, like probably their cousin or their friend to my DMs.
- 18:54SPEAKER_04: I'm just laughing, like, bro, what do you expect me to say about this?
- 18:57SPEAKER_04: Friends that I know texting me names, just one-liners, like 2 a.m.
- 19:01SPEAKER_04: I'm like, okay, bro, I get it.
- 19:04SPEAKER_04: I'm not literally gonna say anything back, like, so it's so it was funny, yeah.
- 19:10SPEAKER_08: So, did you like it to help draw up the list of like who we're gonna go take who we're gonna go check out, or is it more of like yo, there's more like a sort of committee that analyzes?
- 19:18SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I mean, there was there was like a search firm that most universities hire, right?
- 19:22SPEAKER_09: That kind of gives the initial list and then y'all come with extra guys, or how does that become no exactly?
- 19:28SPEAKER_04: Search firm has a big pool of guys.
- 19:31SPEAKER_04: We say, Okay, take that guy off.
- 19:33SPEAKER_04: Okay, let's look into him more because they'll they'll have a whole big list and they'll have obviously their bio, what they've done, everything there, and then we talk about it.
- 19:42SPEAKER_04: Okay, let's look into him, let's look into his background.
- 19:45SPEAKER_04: Okay, let's do more research on him, come back in the next group and then talk about it.
- 19:49SPEAKER_04: Oh, let's uh have you played with any player that's played with him?
- 19:53SPEAKER_04: Have you have you talked or played with any coach that's been on the staff?
- 19:56SPEAKER_04: Do you know anybody?
- 19:57SPEAKER_04: Me being on the G League side, I had a vast range of guys that played everywhere.
- 20:02SPEAKER_04: I I played actually played against a guy that played for McCasslin, and I was able to talk to him.
- 20:08SPEAKER_04: And so it was it was cool to like one of the days, just randomly.
- 20:13SPEAKER_04: Um, one of the uh I think reporters had actually either went to a school somewhere and overheard it, like it was so many.
- 20:23SPEAKER_04: I'm just getting information a lot, and I'm not doing it in a hey, tell me about your coach.
- 20:27SPEAKER_04: No, I couldn't.
- 20:28SPEAKER_04: It was like a sly, like I got to know the real, and then asked friends of a friend.
- 20:34SPEAKER_04: Like it was so interesting to kind of be savvy in that way.
- 20:38SPEAKER_04: But yeah, and if we had guys on the top of our heads, we add it to the pool, and then we see how they rank against the others, we get them on the call, and then we actually so it was uh it was an in-depth, it was it was kind of both.
- 20:50SPEAKER_04: Like, yeah, we had a pool, but like literally, if a friend texted me a name, it it worked.
- 20:55SPEAKER_04: If a friend would text me a name at 2 a.m.
- 20:57SPEAKER_04: that I didn't think of, and I'm like, oh, that's he should be looked at.
- 21:01SPEAKER_04: I texted a group and we actually looked at him.
- 21:03SPEAKER_04: So yeah, that's it.
- 21:04SPEAKER_04: It taught me a lesson of like, shoot your shot, bro.
- 21:08SPEAKER_04: Like, don't say your no for somebody else's, like, go up to the plate, shoot your shot.
- 21:12SPEAKER_04: You never know.
- 21:13SPEAKER_04: You never know.
- 21:14SPEAKER_09: We talked, we talked to guys that you know, outside of like you think he no, we like everybody had a a fair shake because we wanted to get this right, so yeah, and that I mean that kind of explains a I think a lot of fans kind of are are wondering how guys like Jeff Goodman, Rosteen, those type of guys really get this information, and it's just from the word of mouth from everybody when it's just even a sly little comment that you have with somebody there, some guy two feet away could have heard that, and you know it's just there's so much some of some of those not to cut you off, some of those were wrong.
- 21:48SPEAKER_04: Some of those were wrong.
- 21:49SPEAKER_04: Some of those are just okay, you just it happened to be it, but uh literally to the point like during the search, I was just laughing like you guys have no clue.
- 21:58SPEAKER_04: We're doing a good job, we're doing a good job.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: They have no clue, yeah.
- 22:02SPEAKER_09: Oh, yeah.
- 22:03SPEAKER_09: Well, one of those guys I mentioned has a real beef with Texas Tech and likes to spout some.
- 22:08SPEAKER_04: He just does it to get cliques and reading.
- 22:10SPEAKER_04: Oh, for sure.
- 22:10SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 22:11SPEAKER_09: He's that type of it's not just with tech, he does it with a lot of other schools.
- 22:14SPEAKER_09: He he knows he knows the game.
- 22:16SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 22:16SPEAKER_09: But uh, okay, so let's talk, let's talk McCaslin.
- 22:19SPEAKER_09: What did he do during those discussions and those interviews with you guys that really just gave you the confidence to say this is this is who it needs to be?
- 22:28SPEAKER_04: Man, it it was a lot of things, and it's hard to kind of pinpoint and into one kind of spiel here, but just his passion, he got some shit to him, his grit, his toughness, his fight, um, the way everyone speaks so highly about of him, his relationships that he built with his players, um, his mindset on growth, not just okay, uh, what's your NIL budget over there?
- 22:53SPEAKER_04: Okay, I can work with that because some coaches had something to say about that, which was alarming to me, anyways.
- 22:59SPEAKER_04: They were he was focused on growth and and building the athlete.
- 23:02SPEAKER_04: Um, he he's focused on championships.
- 23:05SPEAKER_04: Uh, my my thing was he he got some his grit, his toughness in his fight matched West Texas.
- 23:10SPEAKER_04: It it was huge.
- 23:11SPEAKER_04: And and for him to know how much the community meant and he showed it, it's more so like I had to get him to shut up almost.
- 23:20SPEAKER_04: Like I he I couldn't get him to shut up.
- 23:21SPEAKER_04: Like he was talking, he was talking because I was I'm telling you, I was prying, prying.
- 23:25SPEAKER_04: Like I would listen, okay.
- 23:26SPEAKER_04: Let me I'm gonna pry into that, but like he kept going, he kept going.
- 23:29SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, oh, he answered it.
- 23:30SPEAKER_04: Oh, he answered, oh, he answered.
- 23:32SPEAKER_04: So I left um, I think like the second or third time, you know.
- 23:36SPEAKER_04: Usually I'm grilling him, so I have straight face, like throwing it out, but like I started giving reactions, like, damn, that was good.
- 23:42SPEAKER_04: I'm like, damn, like he got he kind of got me fired up, but I'm showing my cards, I don't want to show them.
- 23:46SPEAKER_04: But I'm like, damn, like, okay, okay, I'm I'm nodding my head.
- 23:48SPEAKER_04: I haven't nodded my head before.
- 23:50SPEAKER_04: I was just like, but then after he left, I'm like, God damn, this like I like him, I like him, I like him a lot, I like him a lot.
- 23:56SPEAKER_04: And then to the point Joey was like, after one of them, he's like, God, damn, he can coach for me.
- 24:01SPEAKER_04: I'll tell you that much.
- 24:02SPEAKER_04: He can coach for me.
- 24:03SPEAKER_04: And so he the way he showed it and and everything he spoke to, it kind of aligned it, definitely aligned with our values and the toughness, the grit, the the the fight that we need and the standard of excellence.
- 24:14SPEAKER_04: He wanted to jump over that, he embraced that.
- 24:17SPEAKER_04: So I think that that kind of set him apart.
- 24:20SPEAKER_08: Could you tell he was like excited at the opportunity to coach at Texas Tech?
- 24:24SPEAKER_08: As you know, you were kind of touching on guys before that were like, you know, laying out, oh, how you know what kind of resources could I work with there?
- 24:29SPEAKER_08: You could you kind of tell that some guys saw Texas Tech as a promotion?
- 24:33SPEAKER_08: While could you maybe see a difference with Grant, uh, where it's more of I want to go coach at Texas Tech, not so much it's I want a promotion, which I mean it's it's kind of it's kind of a dirty way to to to to to talk about these positions, right?
- 24:45SPEAKER_08: I mean, you know, Texas is obviously still a great coaching gig, but um, you know, you still have a program exactly.
- 24:50SPEAKER_04: Bro, you articulated that point perfectly, exactly.
- 24:54SPEAKER_04: And and that's kind of what he showed.
- 24:56SPEAKER_04: That's why when people ask me, I'm like, I'm not, I don't know how to show tell you, like he showed that a lot of you can tell, oh, it's just a lot of oh, if you're at okay, a big five school, uh high major, okay, it's just uh another better location for you, bet maybe, or if you're already in a great conference, you come to a great conference, okay.
- 25:17SPEAKER_04: You will be looking for the next.
- 25:19SPEAKER_04: He wanted this job, like you could tell Texas Tech, like it was Texas Tech that moved the needle.
- 25:24SPEAKER_04: He had other big 12 jobs that he turned down, and so when he said that, there's he said that on a couple times.
- 25:29SPEAKER_04: I was just like, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 25:31SPEAKER_04: Like, I I talked after he left.
- 25:33SPEAKER_04: I'm like, was this his dream job?
- 25:35SPEAKER_04: I think in one of the Zooms, they were like, you know, he said it was his dream job.
- 25:38SPEAKER_04: He literally turned down a job for this, and so it was he and he was it's so funny.
- 25:44SPEAKER_04: He was he wanted it, and I could say this, I haven't said this anywhere else.
- 25:49SPEAKER_04: He was pushy.
- 25:50SPEAKER_04: I think his either his agent or him was like like pushy, like pushy, like if they're not doing it, like um, like trying to show us car.
- 25:59SPEAKER_04: We're like, hey, bro, relax, relax.
- 26:02SPEAKER_04: We we need time to actually give this some, you know.
- 26:04SPEAKER_04: He was pushy, like he wanted it.
- 26:07SPEAKER_04: So, like he, you know, so he set himself apart for sure.
- 26:10SPEAKER_08: Oh, that that's that they're speaking our language, man.
- 26:13SPEAKER_08: That that that has to fire up the base, man.
- 26:15SPEAKER_08: That's so cool to hear.
- 26:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, for sure.
- 26:17SPEAKER_04: It was it, it was cool to see.
- 26:18SPEAKER_04: It was like I like I'm behind the scenes, like you said, for us.
- 26:22SPEAKER_09: I'm like, ah so yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 26:27SPEAKER_04: You just you're trying to like maintain your cool and just like, but inside you're just like and it's so funny, not because you are so funny, so many names that people wanted because they saw the person do it in that level at that stage.
- 26:40SPEAKER_04: But okay, let's see.
- 26:42SPEAKER_04: Let's okay, let's take a name.
- 26:44SPEAKER_04: I'm not gonna say the name, but let's take a name from the Big 12.
- 26:47SPEAKER_04: He just won Naismith, whatever.
- 26:49SPEAKER_04: Last year was he a coach.
- 26:50SPEAKER_04: No, no one saw this coming.
- 26:52SPEAKER_04: Let's say a name for us that we went to new heights.
- 26:56SPEAKER_04: Did anybody see that coming?
- 26:57SPEAKER_04: No, so it's so funny.
- 26:58SPEAKER_04: Like everybody wants the name right now, but they don't actually see the traits that this guy has, and he hasn't had the chance to be at the place.
- 27:07SPEAKER_04: And then when he has the place with a great environment and community around him, like the bar none that we have, it could take it to another level.
- 27:14SPEAKER_04: Nobody thinks of that, but yeah, so it's it was just an interesting process going on.
- 27:19SPEAKER_09: Well, you know, same same thing happened with our football coaches.
- 27:22SPEAKER_09: This guy was a you know associate linebackers coach, and he comes in here and does really well and has this program trending in like a great direction.
- 27:30SPEAKER_09: So exactly it really it comes from all different levels.
- 27:33SPEAKER_09: You could get a guy that's from the power five level, been doing it for years, and be successful here.
- 27:37SPEAKER_09: You could also get a guy from you know division two, whatever, to be successful here.
- 27:42SPEAKER_09: It's just it's the job, it's Texas Tech, it's the facilities, like you said, everything you have the support to be successful, and a lot of people could be successful here.
- 27:50SPEAKER_04: And you got to get lucky.
- 27:51SPEAKER_04: Uh, coaches even say it, you got to get lucky with timing.
- 27:54SPEAKER_04: Timing has to, oh, this coach is available at this time when you have a job open.
- 27:58SPEAKER_04: Okay, and I learned a lot of that in in this process, but it's just like so many people, when it comes to oh, we have this good thing, have this fixed mindset on like it's the only thing that I'll ever have.
- 28:10SPEAKER_04: No, like you don't have your mind set on growth.
- 28:13SPEAKER_04: Think even businesses, how do they think on the next thing?
- 28:16SPEAKER_04: They don't look at damn this iPhone 14 is the best.
- 28:19SPEAKER_04: They're already thinking of the next.
- 28:21SPEAKER_04: How do we make it better and grow and grow and grow?
- 28:23SPEAKER_04: Like, same thing.
- 28:24SPEAKER_04: We have the traits in a coach to take it to another level.
- 28:28SPEAKER_04: You still worried about the past.
- 28:29SPEAKER_04: It's like so.
- 28:30SPEAKER_04: It's it's uh it was definitely interesting.
- 28:33SPEAKER_09: So, yeah, for sure.
- 28:34SPEAKER_09: Um, you know, feel free, feel free to answer this however you want to, but with kind of all the controversy and the perfect poor performance last season and everything, uh, you know, I think we all kind of expect a different looking roster.
- 28:47SPEAKER_09: I don't know uh how different it'll look.
- 28:49SPEAKER_09: I don't think any of us really know how different it's gonna look, but how high of a priority was it for you guys?
- 28:54SPEAKER_09: Was the ability to retain the current players on the team, you know, JT Pop, those type of guys.
- 29:00SPEAKER_09: How important was that in in the committee's eyes?
- 29:03SPEAKER_04: You know, that's a great question because me personally, I have a different take.
- 29:10SPEAKER_04: The committee, I'll say this about Kirby, man, he really cared about what those players said, and even from my experience being on it, that's why I'm like, dang, I actually am valued.
- 29:20SPEAKER_04: I know what this feels like on the player side to have a coach leave.
- 29:23SPEAKER_04: Like, what the heck?
- 29:24SPEAKER_04: So for me to hear like him actually come back with what the players say and some of their requests and some of their concerns, like had me think, okay, one, he cared.
- 29:34SPEAKER_04: That was how he was with me when I went through my coach's change.
- 29:36SPEAKER_04: That's how he is now.
- 29:37SPEAKER_04: He actually cares.
- 29:38SPEAKER_04: Like some guys are like hard, hard, like he wasn't at all.
- 29:43SPEAKER_04: Like that was uh literally a point and uh a talking point in every one of our kind of deliberations.
- 29:50SPEAKER_04: But yeah, I think it was a point to you know keep our guys, you know, that were let me let me say this in the right way.
- 29:57SPEAKER_04: I'm not a pol, I'm not uh a politician, and I have to be diplomatic with my approach about this.
- 30:04SPEAKER_04: But one, the players were definitely their concerns were definitely taken in, I'll say that.
- 30:09SPEAKER_04: Two, for me personally, I know that it's tough to kind of evaluate players off a year like this where our leadership wasn't there lacking.
- 30:19SPEAKER_04: I love Mark Adams personally, but I it it wasn't what it needs to be, not for our position where we're at, Texas Tech.
- 30:27SPEAKER_04: So it's tough to have you know judge younger players when they had no leadership.
- 30:31SPEAKER_04: And it's tough to like NIL, so many new variables, like who knows?
- 30:36SPEAKER_04: If I was in their shoes, maybe I would have done the same.
- 30:39SPEAKER_04: But um, yeah, it I will I will say that the players were definitely um taken account of and and their concerns were definitely um for sure talked about.
- 30:50SPEAKER_04: And honestly, yeah, the uh we wanted to get it right, and but we weren't it's hard to be rushed because you want to get something right, but like as players, oh, he's getting into the portal, this type of thing.
- 31:02SPEAKER_04: Best best of luck that if they're gonna do what they're doing, we wish them the best, but we're gonna get this right for the university first and then kind of work out through there.
- 31:10SPEAKER_09: So yeah, no, I think yeah, because I I've had this mentality throughout any coach that we just went we went through with beard, we're going through it now with Adam Stim McCastlin.
- 31:20SPEAKER_09: And it's just like, you know, I'm not gonna be surprised if a guy enters his name in the transfer forum.
- 31:24SPEAKER_09: I'm just not, but the goal is with this new coach that no matter what happens, you're gonna be a successful program because you got the right guy leading the way.
- 31:32SPEAKER_04: Correct, correct.
- 31:33SPEAKER_09: So yeah, so um you talked you talked with the football team, you talked with uh you talked with uh in front of the people at the press conference at the intro.
- 31:43SPEAKER_09: Uh, who who kind of initiated that with the with the foot?
- 31:45SPEAKER_09: I know the the press conference was kind of last minute, you know, he just called you up there to talk.
- 31:50SPEAKER_09: But the the football team was it kind of was it Joey, was it just Sean?
- 31:54SPEAKER_09: Who who were who were the guys that asked you to go speak to them?
- 31:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know, the funny story about this.
- 32:01SPEAKER_04: Literally, before I went to tech, obviously for the press conference the week before, I got a text from this number um that said, Hey, when are you coming to Love It?
- 32:13SPEAKER_04: And for me, it's like I've I guess I was on my high horse because everybody just know I'm coming to Love it, just hitting me up because people already were on Twitter and on Snapchat.
- 32:24SPEAKER_04: But this number hit me.
- 32:25SPEAKER_04: I'm like, bro, one, if you're messaging somebody and I don't have your number saved, say this is X, are you coming to Lubbock?
- 32:34SPEAKER_04: This person didn't do that.
- 32:35SPEAKER_04: So I'm literally on phone with my best friend Andrew Soros, and I'm on FaceTime.
- 32:39SPEAKER_04: I'm like, bro, this person just sent me this text, like, and and they sent, I think he sent another message after because I had not looked at it.
- 32:48SPEAKER_04: I went to the gym.
- 32:49SPEAKER_04: I'm like, bro, I don't know who you are.
- 32:50SPEAKER_04: I'm not texting back.
- 32:51SPEAKER_04: Anyways, he sent another one.
- 32:52SPEAKER_04: I'm like, I literally was about to say, Will you please type your name first and then say it?
- 32:59SPEAKER_04: But thank God I didn't.
- 33:00SPEAKER_04: I just said, Who is this?
- 33:02SPEAKER_04: And then I I get off the phone with Drew.
- 33:04SPEAKER_04: We talk about it.
- 33:05SPEAKER_04: We're like, bro, why would anybody do this?
- 33:07SPEAKER_04: Long story short, ends up being Joey Maguire.
- 33:11SPEAKER_04: He's like, uh, this is Joey, this is Coach McGuire.
- 33:15SPEAKER_04: I'm like, oh my god, bro, what is wrong with me?
- 33:19SPEAKER_04: Like I said, we've been texting in that secret group, so we're not texting.
- 33:23SPEAKER_04: So I'm like, bro, what the heck?
- 33:25SPEAKER_04: And and basically he's like, I want you to come to a practice.
- 33:28SPEAKER_04: And I already I had already booked my um booked my trip to end on Tuesday, to end on Monday, but they have a practice on Tuesday.
- 33:36SPEAKER_04: So I'm like, no, I wanna get my I want to stay.
- 33:39SPEAKER_04: So I had the lady, um, thankfully, Heidi, shout out Heidi.
- 33:43SPEAKER_04: She literally extended my flight, extended the rental, extended the hotel for me to able to go to a practice.
- 33:48SPEAKER_04: Then I get to the practice and I walk in there.
- 33:51SPEAKER_04: Obviously, it's wendy, they do it inside, and I'm watching, I'm like, dang, this is lit.
- 33:54SPEAKER_04: Like, you gotta you gotta understand, like when I go to love the day before, we just introdu our new head coach, but that means we just outroed everybody else that I know.
- 34:05SPEAKER_04: So there's a range of emotions, like I'm seeing the whole place clear.
- 34:08SPEAKER_04: I'm like, bro, this is crazy.
- 34:09SPEAKER_04: But then I'm like, oh, that's the guy that we like.
- 34:11SPEAKER_04: Like there's a lot of emotions, and so I'm sitting in that, and then the next day comes.
- 34:16SPEAKER_04: I'm kind of still sitting in that, and I go to the practice, and I'm like, oh, this is really cool.
- 34:20SPEAKER_04: I like how they run things.
- 34:21SPEAKER_04: Literally, the day before I went to special teams meetings, I saw, I met everybody.
- 34:25SPEAKER_04: It's really cool.
- 34:26SPEAKER_04: I love their culture.
- 34:27SPEAKER_04: The next day, I'm like, okay, I'm champ champ, uh like I'm armed up because I'm like, I love football and I love how they play their culture together, they're really a unit.
- 34:36SPEAKER_04: So I'm really diving into the practice, and then like the practice starts winding down, and Sean comes over there, my uh uh college roommate to Sean.
- 34:44SPEAKER_04: He's like, uh, well, there's like 20 minutes left.
- 34:48SPEAKER_04: Coach wants you to talk, and then are you good with that?
- 34:50SPEAKER_04: I'm like, uh yeah, and then he just runs away.
- 34:53SPEAKER_04: Like, bro, and picture it's a practice, like you riled up, like you, so there's so much.
- 34:57SPEAKER_04: I'm like, bro, I I don't even have thoughts to say right now.
- 35:00SPEAKER_04: I literally was I'm torn from yesterday.
- 35:03SPEAKER_04: I obviously I'm happy, but it's like, but now I'm like, I don't, I'm not ready.
- 35:06SPEAKER_04: I'm not ready.
- 35:08SPEAKER_04: So literally, 15 minutes later, Coach McGuire's like telling his team, if you don't get fired up hearing this guy speak, there's something literally, there's something wrong with you.
- 35:20SPEAKER_04: And I swear, I'm not just saying this.
- 35:22SPEAKER_04: In my head, I'm like, who the hell is he talking about?
- 35:26SPEAKER_04: I'm looking behind me, like, bro, who the hell is he?
- 35:29SPEAKER_04: It's somebody talking before me.
- 35:31SPEAKER_04: I'm I swear, like, who the hell is this man talking?
- 35:34SPEAKER_04: If you don't get fired up like this guy, and then he's like, I'll have Sean.
- 35:39SPEAKER_04: I'm like, damn, he's he's talking about me.
- 35:41SPEAKER_04: And then Sean introduced me, and then I just start going.
- 35:44SPEAKER_04: Like, I'm like, I think they cut the first part, but I'm like, Y'all got some shit to y'all, y'all.
- 35:49SPEAKER_04: Y'all got some edge.
- 35:50SPEAKER_04: Like, I love the edge.
- 35:51SPEAKER_04: Never leave.
- 35:51SPEAKER_04: Like, I'm I start going, and as I keep talking, I get a message out, and I look at a player and I was like, What's the ceiling?
- 35:57SPEAKER_04: What's the floor?
- 35:59SPEAKER_04: And then he said, Oh, uh, bowl game.
- 36:02SPEAKER_04: I said, What's the ceiling?
- 36:03SPEAKER_04: Championship.
- 36:03SPEAKER_04: Then I'm like, let's end that on championship.
- 36:05SPEAKER_04: And they're like, Oh, championship.
- 36:06SPEAKER_04: Then Maguire's like, Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, sit y'all, sit down.
- 36:10SPEAKER_04: I got something to say.
- 36:11SPEAKER_04: Y'all know I end this practice.
- 36:12SPEAKER_04: It was so funny, but nah, it was literally random.
- 36:16SPEAKER_04: Last 15 minutes of practice, Sean tapped me and and got me over.
- 36:20SPEAKER_08: So that's gotta leave, man.
- 36:23SPEAKER_08: That that like just that, like that that gets that's gonna fire the fans up that we have just two awesome dudes at the helm of these programs, like bring in dudes, like just to recognize the uh what you bring to not even a sport you didn't even play at the school, like just to understand the culture y'all have accumulated together.
- 36:41SPEAKER_08: I just think that that's so dang cool, dude.
- 36:42SPEAKER_08: Like we're we're and I'm honestly, I know it's it's uh I've I feel like I've I've I've done enough complimenting, but dude, honestly, like we're so lucky to have you to be able to just hop over and do that real quick.
- 36:52SPEAKER_08: Fire a boy's a follow-up, you know?
- 36:53SPEAKER_04: And then it was it was an honor, bro.
- 36:56SPEAKER_04: It was really cool.
- 36:57SPEAKER_04: So I would if I were you and anybody else, I'd be like, bro, that's really cool.
- 37:00SPEAKER_04: But since it's me, it's so hard to see if it's you.
- 37:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but even me, I'm like, after I went back to the hotel and I said this on the podcast, I'm like, who the hell do I think I am, bro?
- 37:10SPEAKER_04: I'm just speaking every like who the hell do I?
- 37:13SPEAKER_04: I'm like, bro, this is crazy.
- 37:15SPEAKER_04: It was cool.
- 37:16SPEAKER_09: That's awesome.
- 37:17SPEAKER_09: That's awesome.
- 37:18SPEAKER_09: I mean, just yeah, being being in the position you are to go, you know, spend five years at a university, take that program to new heights, and you know, just be able to come back and be appreciated like that.
- 37:30SPEAKER_09: That's gotta feel good.
- 37:31SPEAKER_04: It's a blessing, it's a blessing.
- 37:33SPEAKER_09: But um, all right, man.
- 37:35SPEAKER_09: Well, heavy question.
- 37:37SPEAKER_09: Just curious for your future.
- 37:39SPEAKER_09: What what are your kind of plans?
- 37:41SPEAKER_09: Are are you are you planning on playing till a certain age?
- 37:44SPEAKER_09: Do you have like a you have like a timeline?
- 37:46SPEAKER_09: Are you just taking it one day at a time?
- 37:47SPEAKER_09: What's kind of your your long-term plans?
- 37:51SPEAKER_04: Bro, I'm humbled.
- 37:52SPEAKER_04: Um I'm thankful, I'm grateful for the traits that guy's giving me.
- 37:57SPEAKER_04: And I know like every single day I hear, coach, used to be a coach, coach, coach on Twitter.
- 38:02SPEAKER_04: And that's that I think I'd be a great coach.
- 38:04SPEAKER_04: I'm not gonna lie, but it that's never crossed my mind to be honest, until everybody says it.
- 38:09SPEAKER_04: But then, like now, after this process, it was actually cool like to hear because I have Sean Johnson.
- 38:15SPEAKER_04: Um, he's my roommate, he's a coach, and then after he's like, Joey McGuire was like raving about you over here.
- 38:21SPEAKER_04: He's like, That that your roommate, bro.
- 38:23SPEAKER_04: He's like, I thought we had a stud in Sean, but you him, and he kept talking about it.
- 38:27SPEAKER_04: And then because we have a group message with Sean, he'll he'll he tweeted it.
- 38:30SPEAKER_04: I mean, he he texted it, and then the next day he was like, Literally, Coach McGuire keeps talking about you, bro.
- 38:35SPEAKER_04: He literally said, You you made a lot of money this weekend and or this process.
- 38:40SPEAKER_04: Uh, he was just like, Him, they were talking about it.
- 38:42SPEAKER_04: I talked to Kirby about different, so it's just like, bro, it's like, bro, it's almost like I'm in a position humbly, I'm thankful for the traits that guys give me, but it's like overwhelming.
- 38:54SPEAKER_04: And then my mind is like, Oh, well, you gotta piece it together, you gotta be able to do this.
- 38:58SPEAKER_04: And then bruh, I'm gonna walk the next step.
- 39:01SPEAKER_04: The next I don't have to know every step.
- 39:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the next step, the next step is in Christ, is in him.
- 39:06SPEAKER_04: I'm a faith, uh Christ follower.
- 39:08SPEAKER_04: He put it in me, he gave me the traits.
- 39:10SPEAKER_04: He's gonna help me decide the next move.
- 39:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I can tell you the game of basketball, it is it's a different sport, it's a different game, pro.
- 39:18SPEAKER_04: It's not about talent, it's literally not, it's about extra politics, and I'm not a fan of.
- 39:24SPEAKER_04: And it's like when you take this craft, something that you're creative, way you can express yourself and you make it oh, monetize it.
- 39:32SPEAKER_04: And guys try to impress, impress, impress.
- 39:34SPEAKER_04: It's not the same game.
- 39:35SPEAKER_04: I could say that, but I don't know, man.
- 39:37SPEAKER_04: Literally, I'm taking it day at a time, day at a time.
- 39:41SPEAKER_09: Well, I mean, I could tell you personally that you would be welcome at any position you wanted at Texas Tech right now.
- 39:47SPEAKER_09: And I think after this whole process, so whatever you decide to do, you're gonna be successful with it, whether it's media, front office, coaching, whatever.
- 39:54SPEAKER_09: You know, I think uh any any program would love to have you, especially here at Texas Tech.
- 39:59SPEAKER_06: Thanks.
- 40:00SPEAKER_09: Um, but you mentioned it, and it's interesting with basketball nowadays, college, you know, you're dealing with NIL, you're dealing with donors, you're dealing with you know, all sorts of outside stuff that not even you early on in your career really had to kind of deal with the at least the level it is now.
- 40:19SPEAKER_09: Um, you tweeted out a couple days ago just about you know guys putting their names in the transfer portal and putting out you know, your top two, your top five of this.
- 40:27SPEAKER_05: I hate that thing.
- 40:28SPEAKER_09: And yeah, and it's just like what are your thoughts on the current state of everything?
- 40:33SPEAKER_09: Like, I it's it's gotta be annoying coming from a guy who spent five years and grinded his way to his position, you know, his senior year and everything.
- 40:41SPEAKER_09: But what are kind of your thoughts on on how these guys approach it?
- 40:44SPEAKER_04: Let me say this once and for all.
- 40:47SPEAKER_04: First and foremost, there should be room for nuance on Twitter.
- 40:51SPEAKER_04: It's not just a blanket statement.
- 40:53SPEAKER_04: Oh, we can actually think about what somebody says and actually have discourse and you know challenge each other.
- 40:58SPEAKER_04: It's literally an opinion.
- 41:00SPEAKER_04: That's one.
- 41:01SPEAKER_04: Two, think about it.
- 41:03SPEAKER_04: Have you speaking specifically to the top two posts?
- 41:08SPEAKER_04: Okay, you're at a job and you want to leave this job and you have potential suitors.
- 41:14SPEAKER_04: Okay, I worked an Amazon job.
- 41:16SPEAKER_04: Would I say on LinkedIn I'm getting courted by Facebook to my top two?
- 41:22SPEAKER_04: Amazon and Facebook.
- 41:24SPEAKER_04: Would I post that?
- 41:25SPEAKER_04: Does anybody do that in real life?
- 41:27SPEAKER_04: That's a good point.
- 41:28SPEAKER_08: I've never thought of it that way, dude.
- 41:30SPEAKER_05: Nobody ever does that in real life.
- 41:32SPEAKER_04: Literally, Coach McCaslin, he literally we waited till the end and then he said it after he won.
- 41:37SPEAKER_04: If he said, Well, I'm getting courted by Texas Tech, my top two right now is UNT and Texas Tech.
- 41:44SPEAKER_04: Does anybody anywhere else no?
- 41:46SPEAKER_09: Now you're just now you're just upsetting both fan bases, you know.
- 41:50SPEAKER_05: Like it's like, does that make sense?
- 41:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, does it's like and then the kid like I have nothing against the kid because everybody does it, yeah.
- 41:59SPEAKER_04: They don't see it, like we see it.
- 42:01SPEAKER_04: And I think like guys probably send it in their group messages, anyways.
- 42:06SPEAKER_04: Why don't I post about it?
- 42:08SPEAKER_04: I like when I see top two, I'm like, bro, so you just tell me you grinded with a team, fought with a team, fought with a community, the community's charge, you know, their fans, probably the little kids look up to you, probably, you know, uh husband, wives, they come pay money for your game.
- 42:24SPEAKER_04: Probably your family, your friends look at you, oh, Texas Tech, that's him, and then you just uh disregard that and just put it like a okay, regular playing field, top two.
- 42:37SPEAKER_04: And it's like one, you already had your damn uh NIL selection show day, whatever.
- 42:43SPEAKER_04: Like you want another selection show day every single year, like we're supposed to go, yeah, yeah.
- 42:48SPEAKER_04: Does that make it doesn't make sense, bro?
- 42:50SPEAKER_09: I think I think that's what they want.
- 42:52SPEAKER_09: They want the you know, the likes, they want the you know, camaraderie, they want people to want them.
- 42:57SPEAKER_09: I don't know.
- 42:58SPEAKER_09: It's so it's just it's just yeah, I've always found those annoying.
- 43:01SPEAKER_04: It's like decency to me, bro.
- 43:03SPEAKER_04: You're top two, and you're putting up the school that you're at right now.
- 43:06SPEAKER_04: That doesn't make sense, it's already your top, you're there, you're there.
- 43:10SPEAKER_04: Just either this goes for transfers too.
- 43:14SPEAKER_04: Transfer in or transfer out in silence, hush, shut up, go like bro, and people won't all bash you.
- 43:22SPEAKER_04: It's like, bro, it's life, it's a new age, okay.
- 43:25SPEAKER_04: But don't it's so weird.
- 43:27SPEAKER_04: LinkedIn, Amazon, and Facebook.
- 43:29SPEAKER_04: Which one I'm gonna go to, bro.
- 43:31SPEAKER_05: Shut shut up and go.
- 43:32SPEAKER_09: Yeah, that's a that's something I appreciate it.
- 43:34SPEAKER_09: And this is kind of pre like big NIL, but like what Mooney and Tariq did.
- 43:39SPEAKER_09: I mean, those guys were very humble about it, you know.
- 43:41SPEAKER_09: They weren't out here like posting on, and those guys, I I imagine you know, they're they're pretty humble dudes, and so just like not spewing it out, not putting it out in front of everybody.
- 43:51SPEAKER_04: So that's yeah, imagine how your teammates feel.
- 43:54SPEAKER_04: I'm just like, bro, I just played with this guy, he's just plastic.
- 43:58SPEAKER_04: I just I have a in.
- 44:00SPEAKER_04: I inherently don't agree with that.
- 44:02SPEAKER_04: Like, why would you put that up?
- 44:04SPEAKER_04: I don't get it.
- 44:04SPEAKER_04: It doesn't it's like, bro, it doesn't make any sense.
- 44:07SPEAKER_04: It doesn't make any sense.
- 44:08SPEAKER_04: But with NIL, it's like, man, I I I don't like I think I I know the players should get paid.
- 44:16SPEAKER_04: Um but the way that it's done now, bro, it's like it that's why leadership is at a top order in in and getting your coach right so you can get a handle on that, a pulse on that.
- 44:28SPEAKER_04: Because if you throw figures at this guy, throw figures at this guy, oh, why is he getting more than that?
- 44:32SPEAKER_04: Or why is he there's so much behind the scenes that you know people aren't aware of when it comes to NIL and when it comes to breaking down of teams uh that needs to be addressed and it starts at the helm with the leader and you know laying everything out, no secrecy in anything?
- 44:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, guys should get paid, but okay, this is why you're getting paid, and if you and and keep them motivated, like okay, how do you keep a guy?
- 44:57SPEAKER_04: That was a main thing in our deliberation.
- 44:59SPEAKER_04: Like, how do you uh keep a guy that's making X bought in?
- 45:02SPEAKER_04: How do you retain players?
- 45:04SPEAKER_04: What have you done?
- 45:05SPEAKER_04: Like, and it's all on the relationship piece and like your scale on a vision of okay, you can be this player if you want to be in the league that this is who you can be.
- 45:13SPEAKER_04: Okay, you're talking about the short term now, the little money you're gonna bounce it, bounce and bounce around.
- 45:18SPEAKER_04: Get if you stay locked in, you can win, get money right now, you could win, and then down the line.
- 45:23SPEAKER_04: This so there's a growth track, there's a plan for you instead of hop, hop, hop.
- 45:27SPEAKER_04: Because again, I think these guys, even speaking to my my situation, being in the G League, you're you're around a lot of one and duns that okay, they made it to the league, they didn't make it in and out.
- 45:38SPEAKER_04: There's a lot of talented guys, it's a very talented league, but talented losers, they never know how to win because they bounce around, bounce around, they leave.
- 45:46SPEAKER_04: Like guys nowadays don't know how to win because they never stuck into something long enough, you know.
- 45:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah, losing, learning how to lose the tough games, maybe like a season like this.
- 45:56SPEAKER_04: The guys that come around and stay, they learn okay, this is how we shouldn't do things the next time.
- 46:01SPEAKER_04: That's what breeds winning.
- 46:03SPEAKER_04: These guys that want to jump, jump, jump, they'll never learn how to lose, which is not learning how to win.
- 46:09SPEAKER_04: So it's like there's so many, you know, drawbacks that NIL brings.
- 46:14SPEAKER_04: It just takes leadership and a core team there together.
- 46:17SPEAKER_04: If you have those things, I think you know the sky's the limit.
- 46:20SPEAKER_08: It's really fascinating to get a guy that that that's been there say all that.
- 46:24SPEAKER_08: I mean, it's just it really sounds like you know, the the the art of trial and error or error is kind of gone to pass, it's just kind of the the win now mentality is just perforated everything, and that you have to like you kept saying, you have to know how to do that, so it's a learning process, so it's just not gonna happen instantly, like everyone's looking for.
- 46:41SPEAKER_08: So that's that's really interesting for perspective perspective, man.
- 46:44SPEAKER_08: And I think about either of those things, either of those things that way.
- 46:47SPEAKER_08: That's really interesting.
- 46:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's it's um obviously you want to win.
- 46:52SPEAKER_04: Obviously, you want to win and have a culture of winning, but you gotta put a team together that's one guys, even the transfers.
- 47:01SPEAKER_04: Oh, what type of transfers do you got?
- 47:02SPEAKER_04: Are you just any type of transfers, the top guys, or winners, or guys with proven track records, high character guys that know how to okay, build those behind them, the younger guys and the younger guys.
- 47:13SPEAKER_04: What kind of guys you got?
- 47:14SPEAKER_04: Oh, just guys that just want to be there, or guys that are hungry, guys that got goals, a vision, character guys.
- 47:19SPEAKER_04: So it's uh it's about a leader, and then it goes recruiting, putting and getting out uh there and getting these guys, these quality guys, to buy in, getting them quickly and bought into what you do.
- 47:30SPEAKER_04: So that starts summer one, but before summer one is spring that we're in now, getting the right guys.
- 47:35SPEAKER_09: So yeah, no doubt.
- 47:37SPEAKER_09: Well, man, this has been great.
- 47:39SPEAKER_09: Uh, a lot of interesting perspective on everything.
- 47:42SPEAKER_09: Uh, uh, if you're not fired up for coach Mac after after this, uh, one thing before we get to Song of the Week.
- 47:48SPEAKER_09: Couple a little bit of a debate here on Twitter uh about what to call Coach Mac.
- 47:53SPEAKER_09: Do is it is it is it is it McGasland or is it McCashland?
- 47:58SPEAKER_04: I don't want no problems.
- 48:02SPEAKER_04: I literally saw this and I was like, bro, I I I like both.
- 48:07SPEAKER_04: I'm not kidding, but cash, I think he likes he, I'ma ask him.
- 48:11SPEAKER_04: He might like cash.
- 48:12SPEAKER_04: I'm not gonna lie.
- 48:13SPEAKER_04: McGass, McGass can have a lot of negative connotations that people don't like, but I like it because it got some edge to it.
- 48:19SPEAKER_04: Sure, sure.
- 48:20SPEAKER_04: McCashlin's cold.
- 48:22SPEAKER_04: I like both.
- 48:23SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm literally, I'm literally outspoken.
- 48:26SPEAKER_04: Like I don't do the little uh the cop out answer, but I literally like both, so I don't know.
- 48:32SPEAKER_09: No, I feel you.
- 48:33SPEAKER_09: That's cool, man.
- 48:33SPEAKER_09: Uh we're big McCashlin fans over here, but uh, but we're willing to hear out anybody.
- 48:38SPEAKER_09: Everybody's got a valid opinion.
- 48:41SPEAKER_09: But all right, this is the talking tech podcast.
- 48:44SPEAKER_09: We always finish off with uh with our interviews with us when it's just us two.
- 48:48SPEAKER_09: We finish off with the song of the week.
- 48:50SPEAKER_09: This is just something for the people to go listen to after they've listened to this episode, they've enjoyed everything, and then go listen to a good song.
- 48:57SPEAKER_09: So, Norrence, we asked you prior to this, what is your song of the week?
- 49:02SPEAKER_04: Song of the week.
- 49:02SPEAKER_04: I'm Nigerian, I like Afrobeats.
- 49:05SPEAKER_04: Go listen to Holiday by Rema.
- 49:08SPEAKER_04: Holiday, obviously, you know how to spell your holiday like any holiday, like today's a holiday.
- 49:13SPEAKER_04: And Rema, R-E-M-A, Rema.
- 49:16SPEAKER_04: Uh, it's pretty good.
- 49:17SPEAKER_04: And the city that he shouts out is where my family's from.
- 49:20SPEAKER_04: So it's like when he says, like, he says, like straight out of Benin is the city, Benin City.
- 49:25SPEAKER_04: I'm like, ah, straight like so it it's a different kind of flex singing that song, so it's cool.
- 49:43SPEAKER_08: That's a talking tech first, man.
- 49:45SPEAKER_08: I love it.
- 49:46SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 49:47SPEAKER_09: Well, as you can tell, me and Tristan are both non-Nigerian, so uh we have the second.
- 49:53SPEAKER_09: But no, I'm excited.
- 49:55SPEAKER_09: I'm excited to find a new one.
- 49:56SPEAKER_09: I'll give you another one.
- 49:58SPEAKER_04: Um what is it?
- 50:01SPEAKER_04: These cold damn vampire is keeping me awake.
- 50:06SPEAKER_04: What is it?
- 50:06SPEAKER_04: What's his name?
- 50:07SPEAKER_04: Um, I forget that that song's great.
- 50:10SPEAKER_04: I can't find my phone, but that like literally, if you type in cold damn vampires, you'll find it.
- 50:15SPEAKER_04: It's really good.
- 50:15SPEAKER_09: We'll shazam that later and put it in the pod.
- 50:18SPEAKER_08: We'll shazam you singing it and see if it picks up.
- 50:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, damn vampire, it's keeping me awake.
- 50:30SPEAKER_05: They keep me awake.
- 50:34SPEAKER_05: Trying to build an empire of things they can take.
- 50:42SPEAKER_09: Alright, we're probably getting something complete opposite of what you gave with with Tristan's picking.
- 50:46SPEAKER_09: But Tristan, Tristan, what you got?
- 50:48SPEAKER_08: Alright, I'm actually I'm actually gonna go with the Canadian.
- 50:50SPEAKER_08: We're keeping it foreign, all right.
- 50:51SPEAKER_08: I'm gonna go with the Great White North.
- 50:53SPEAKER_08: I'm gonna go with Culture Wall, sleeping on the black top, man.
