- 0:01They told him he had five good years left.
- 0:04That was 15 years ago. He's still standing, still
- 0:08speaking, still living. This is living with Parkinson's,
- 0:12The good, the bad, and the reality.
- 0:15A podcast about what happens when life throws you something
- 0:18incurable and you fight back anyway.
- 0:21Hosted by Bryce Perry, diagnosed at 4015.
- 0:25Years into the battle, This is the truth behind the tremor.
- 0:29Let's begin. You know, they told me that
- 0:32Parkinson's would affect my movement, but nobody said it
- 0:36would feel like I was living in a constant state of fight or
- 0:38flight, my heart racing, my thoughts spiraling, my body
- 0:43frozen and not from the tremors. You know, anxiety isn't just
- 0:46part of Parkinson's. It's one of the most invisible,
- 0:49most misunderstood symptoms that we face.
- 0:52And today I'm going to lay it bare and make sure you stick
- 0:57around to the very end because I've got a Bryce ISM waiting
- 1:00that might just shift how you see this whole anxiety mess.
- 1:05Welcome to Living with Parkinson's, The Good, the Bad,
- 1:09and the Reality. Real talk, real life, real
- 1:13community with Bryce Perry. Let's begin.
- 1:18Hey friends, Bryce here. And this is living with
- 1:20Parkinson's, the good, the bad, and the reality.
- 1:23And I've been living with this disease now for over 15 years.
- 1:26And if you're new here, you probably know that Parkinson's
- 1:29is a lot more than tremors. This channel, it's about the
- 1:33truth, the raw stuff, the stuff that doctors sometimes don't say
- 1:36out loud. So if that's what you need
- 1:39today, then go ahead and hit that subscribe button and follow
- 1:41along and join our movement of real life, real talk, and real
- 1:44community. And if you've ever been told
- 1:47it's just in your head or felt like no one gets what you're
- 1:51going through, well, guess what? You're not crazy and you're not
- 1:55weak. So let's talk about Parkinson's
- 1:58and anxiety. And let's clear this up first.
- 2:02Anxiety isn't just a side effect of dealing with Parkinson's,
- 2:06it's actually part of the disease itself.
- 2:09Parkinson's effects dopamine. And guess what?
- 2:12Dopamine plays a big role in mood regulation.
- 2:16So when it drops, yeah, your mental state does too.
- 2:20You know, some days I'll feel a rising wave of dread, like
- 2:24something terrible is about to happen, but there's nothing
- 2:27wrong except my brain chemistry is completely out of whack.
- 2:32And the worst part? People say, like, just calm
- 2:35down. Just calm down.
- 2:37As if I haven't tried that already.
- 2:40So how does it show up? Well, this is what it looks like
- 2:43for me. I start getting like a rapid
- 2:47heartbeat. I get a tight chest, racing
- 2:51thoughts, and sometimes an overwhelming sense that I can't
- 2:55handle what's happening. Even if it's just because it's
- 2:59Tuesday. Sometimes I wake up anxious, No
- 3:03trigger, no reason, just a full body storm before I even get out
- 3:07of bed. Other times it hits mid
- 3:10conversation like I'm smiling, I'm talking, I'm laughing, but
- 3:16inside I'm crumbling. It's like wearing a mask over a
- 3:21panic attack. And yeah, this happens even when
- 3:24my when my motor symptoms are fine.
- 3:28And that's what makes it so confusing and so exhausting.
- 3:33Been there. It's hard and I know it is and
- 3:37I'm here for you and this community is here for you.
- 3:38So stick with me here because we're going to get through this.
- 3:44Let's talk about off times. OK, The anxiety off cycle.
- 3:48When my meds wear off, my body slows down, but my anxiety
- 3:52spikes. It's like my brain starts
- 3:54screaming while my body's whispering.
- 3:57Some researchers believe off periods trigger anxiety because
- 4:00dopamine is crashing. And others, well, they say
- 4:04anxiety might even be part of the off experience.
- 4:08Well, either way, when I'm off, I feel like I'm being squeezed
- 4:11from the inside. And here's the kicker.
- 4:15That anxiety makes it harder to know when to take my next dose.
- 4:19It clouds my thinking, my my timing, my awareness.
- 4:23So yeah, it's a vicious cycle. And I know I'm not the only one
- 4:28caught in it. I know I'm not.
- 4:31And if it's you and you're struggling today with some
- 4:33anxiety and you get caught up in it, you know what?
- 4:35Just let me know. Let me know in the comments.
- 4:37Just say me too. How about that?
- 4:40Me too. I read, I respond, and I every
- 4:44single one of them. Now, this isn't talked about
- 4:49that often. It's kind of taboo.
- 4:52And why does nobody talk about it?
- 4:53Well, let's be honest, people with Parkinson's don't love
- 4:57talking about mental health, do we?
- 4:59And why is that? Because we already feel like
- 5:03we're being judged. We already look fine on the
- 5:06outside and we don't want to seem this dramatic or weak.
- 5:10That's for some of us, others other of us.
- 5:13You can see by the outside that you're not doing fine, right?
- 5:17And so why add more to it? You know, we don't want to seem
- 5:22like I know this is me and I know this is you.
- 5:25And if this is you give this video a like that, you don't
- 5:29want to seem dramatic and you don't want to seem weak and you
- 5:32don't want to seem another thing, right?
- 5:34You just want to add another thing.
- 5:35People, here we go. What?
- 5:37Who's going to talk to me anymore?
- 5:38Now it's like, not only does this happen to me, not only am I
- 5:41shaking, not am I quaking normally am I'm slurring, not
- 5:44only am I sweating, not only am I, you know, having trouble
- 5:47talking, I don't don't seem drunk.
- 5:49But now guess what, on top of all that, I'm feeling anxious.
- 5:53My gosh, right. You don't want to burden people
- 5:55with that. But here is the thing.
- 5:57This is the truth. Anxiety is legit.
- 6:01It's a legit biological part of Parkinson's and pretending that
- 6:05it's not happening just makes it worse.
- 6:09I've had neurologists brush it off.
- 6:10I've had friends tell me to think positive, even well
- 6:14meaning people saying, but you're so strong, you know?
- 6:17Let me be real with you. Let me be real.
- 6:20Being strong doesn't mean never breaking down.
- 6:23You know what it means? It means showing up even when
- 6:27you're anxious. And that's why we have to talk
- 6:30about it. So let's talk about it right
- 6:32here, right now together. Let's talk about things that
- 6:36have helped me. I'm going to tell you things
- 6:37that helped me and hopefully you can take some things away with
- 6:40this. Let's talk about tools.
- 6:42OK, first let's talk about meds. Yes, I've talked to my doctor
- 6:46and yes, I've tried to low dose. I've tried low dose anti anxiety
- 6:50options. But it's not just about the
- 6:53pills, right? It's about patterns.
- 6:55I want to know what triggers it. I want to know when does it hit.
- 6:58And then I want to try different things and see what helps.
- 7:01So again, I track my anxiety in a journal, right?
- 7:05And I track it down. Whatever I'm dealing with the
- 7:08most is what I pay attention to and I track it.
- 7:10It's like one thing at a time. Let's take this one on.
- 7:13You know, sometimes with Parkinson's, especially if
- 7:15you've just been diagnosed, if you're newly diagnosed, listen
- 7:17here. Listen hard.
- 7:19This could be very overwhelming. You're you're, you're watching
- 7:21videos, you're here to listen to podcasts and you're like, OK,
- 7:23I've got to do this. I'm going to do this, I'm going
- 7:24to do this, I'm going to do this.
- 7:25And what about this and this symptom and I've got this going
- 7:28on and that going on. You know what?
- 7:29It's so overwhelming. Take a deep breath, take a step
- 7:32back. OK, calm down and let's take on
- 7:37one thing at a time. And anxiety is a big thing to
- 7:40take on because anxiety will kind of accentuate all your
- 7:43other symptoms. OK, so let's let's try that.
- 7:48Let's start tracking it a bit. OK?
- 7:50Here's another thing you want to make sure you don't do.
- 7:54Don't try not to skip meals, OK? Because low blood sugar equals
- 7:59high anxiety, low blood sugar equals high anxiety.
- 8:04So if your blood Sugar's getting low, that's why.
- 8:07Guess what? I carry around M&M's, peanut
- 8:09M&M's, they're the best and I get an Amen for that one.
- 8:12But peanut M&M's, I carry them around in little packs because I
- 8:14sometimes I need a little bit of sugar.
- 8:16Sometimes I got to get my blood sugar back up there.
- 8:18And it, you know what? It actually, it's like this
- 8:20weird thing that actually helps with some of the anxiety.
- 8:22It actually gets it back going. OK, what's another thing that
- 8:26you can do? Well, you can also listen to
- 8:28some calming playlists, right? Calming playlist, you got to get
- 8:32to your get to that Zen zone, right?
- 8:34Calming playlists or do some breathing exercises, right?
- 8:38And, and yes, you know what really they do help more than I
- 8:41thought. I, I, I felt silly doing
- 8:43breathing exercises, but you know what they actually do help.
- 8:46But I'm going to tell you, here's the biggest game changer.
- 8:48This is the biggest game changer for anxiety and Parkinson's.
- 8:53You ready for this? Take out your pen and write this
- 8:55down. I'm going to give you a second.
- 8:57You ready? It's knowing that you're not
- 9:01alone. It's talking to others.
- 9:07It's it's communicating, it's getting together with people.
- 9:10It's actually talking to other people that are going through
- 9:14the same things you're going through.
- 9:16The more we talk about it, the less anxious we feel, right?
- 9:20I and I'm going to use the inner circle as an example.
- 9:23I talk to others and they're they're talking to me, they're
- 9:26talking to each other and they're worried.
- 9:28They've got things on their mind, they've got symptoms they
- 9:31haven't had before. They've got meds that are trying
- 9:33to new things. And every time we try something
- 9:35new or there's something going on, there's some anxiety with
- 9:38it. But when they speak it out loud
- 9:40and other members are jumping in and saying, hey, I tried it,
- 9:42don't worry about it. It's all good.
- 9:43It's like, right. So talking to others in the
- 9:49inner circle, in the comments on Zoom, whatever it is, it takes
- 9:53the edge off and it will reminds me that this is a shared battle.
- 9:58It's not a you battle, it's a shared battle.
- 10:00You're not in this alone. We're in this together.
- 10:02I'm making these videos for you so you don't feel alone, so that
- 10:06you know you're not the only person who's dealing with this.
- 10:09So here's what I want to know. Have you experienced anxiety
- 10:14with Parkinson's? Yes, in the comments, yes.
- 10:19And what does it look like to you?

- 10:25this hit home for you, give it a like please.
- 10:27And if someone you love needs to hear this, then share with them.
- 10:30Please do that. We need to normalize these
- 10:33conversations, we really do. And if you want to go deeper and
- 10:36it's not something you want to talk about in public, again, the
- 10:38inner circle's open to you. Come join us.
- 10:41It's a private supportive community.
- 10:43You know where we talk about stuff like this honestly with 0
- 10:46judgement. The links in the description.

- 10:54didn't want to miss. And here it is.
- 10:55Here's the Bryce ISM of this moment.
- 10:58With Parkinson's, anxiety isn't always in your head.
- 11:02Sometimes it's in your bloodstream.
- 11:04And no pep talk fixes that. But community helps, and so do
- 11:07carbs. Hey, if you made it this far,
- 11:11thank you. The space, it's not just a
- 11:14channel, it's not just a platform, it's a lifeline.
