- 0:24Trent Condon, Kendall are with you for the next couple of hours
- 0:27to talk a whole lot of sports with you and we appreciate you
- 0:30starting your afternoon. Here's with with us.
- 0:32Here's what's coming up on our program.
- 0:34Eugene Repay is going to join us.
- 0:36He covers Iowa State he will join us about 12:20.
- 0:39We'll take a look ahead to the Arizona game.
- 0:42Sell out sign was hung at the box office yesterday, a
- 0:44whiteout. Arizona pays a visit and we'll
- 0:48talk about that with Eugene Repay.
- 0:50Probably sprinkle in a little basketball as well as since
- 0:53we've last spoken with Eugene, the Big 12 released their
- 0:56basketball schedule and focusing obviously on Iowa State with
- 1:00Eugene and in particular the month of February.
- 1:02The more I look at it, the tougher it gets, but the more
- 1:05fun as a fan it's going to be to watch those games unfold.
- 1:08So Eugene repay is up first, then we'll head to Las Vegas.
- 1:11We'll catch up with her friend Mike Palm, the vice president of
- 1:13operations at Circus Sports. Find out how Thursday Night
- 1:18Football went for the property or did the betters get them
- 1:22yesterday? Obviously, I want to find out
- 1:24how the Ryder Cup is going. It's not going well for the
- 1:26Americans. How how it's doing from a
- 1:28betting perspective. Mike Palm coming up here at
- 1:3112:40. At 1:00, Tom Caicord on the
- 1:35Hawks. They've got a date with the
- 1:37Hoosiers tomorrow afternoon at 2:30, if you don't have Peacock,
- 1:42turn on your radio, turn the clock back, listen to 1040 WHO
- 1:47or wherever the Hawkeye affiliate is where you're
- 1:49listening. That's coming up at 2:30.
- 1:51So we'll talk to you, Tom Kaker to kick off hour number two and
- 1:55then Dalton Wasserman, he covers the NFL for Pro Football Focus.
- 1:59No Bama today. Bama's he's got a family
- 2:01commitment so he is not going to be available today.
- 2:06Bama will join us on Monday to recap the weekend.
- 2:09But Dalton Wasserman, then we will make our picks before we
- 2:12get on out of here at 2:00. And you go where tonight.
- 2:15I'm going to be being neighbors with you again.
- 2:17Well, no, I'm in Altoona. Tonight.
- 2:19Oh that's right, you're also working this evening.
- 2:21I will be in Ankeny though as undefeated Sioux City E comes to
- 2:25town. Sioux City EA year ago a huge
- 2:28surprise. They push valley remember that
- 2:30valley too got on the way. I was absolutely shocked.
- 2:33They return a ton. They're undefeated.
- 2:35This is going to be their first major test of the year.
- 2:37Want to get my eyes on the Black Raiders because there's people
- 2:40believe we talk about the central stranglehold in
- 2:44football, but maybe there's a team not out east, out West that
- 2:47can upset the Apple Car. Now of course last year it was
- 2:50Iowa City Liberty that was that team out east that surprised and
- 2:53made it all the way to the championship game.
- 2:55So we're going to get a look westward with.
- 2:56The Black Raiders, of course, we've got a an affiliate out
- 2:59there as well. Absolutely hope you're
- 3:01listening, Know some of you are and we appreciate it because we
- 3:04see the feedback and we're grateful wherever you're
- 3:06listening on whatever affiliate you are in the state of Iowa,
- 3:10you know. Pep in your step over there.
- 3:12I'm excited about tonight. I'm excited about the final
- 3:14weekend of the Major League Baseball.
- 3:16What a weekend. Fascinating.
- 3:18What a great weekend of sports. Closing weekend, Prairie Meadows
- 3:21live racing. So I'm going to be out there for
- 3:22a couple of nights. Normally I'd be kind of edge of
- 3:26my seat. Why am I doing this?
- 3:28But if there's a, there's a sports book on the 4th floor at
- 3:31Prairie. So, and with all of those good,
- 3:33I'm guessing, although I don't know for a fact, but I would be
- 3:36shocked if Arizona and Iowa State do not get the big screen
- 3:40treatment at the Caesar Sport book at PRM and if I have
- 3:44anything to say about it. I'm.
- 3:46I'm going to see if I can. I don't think I'll have to.
- 3:48I don't think I'll have to, but there's other good games going
- 3:50on. So Speaking of that, do you like
- 3:54the slate this week? From a betting perspective, I
- 3:57like the NFL better than college.
- 3:59How do you feel? I am completely flipped to that.
- 4:01I love the betting slate. It's another one of those slates
- 4:04that I'm going to have way too many games and boring couple.
- 4:06You can I can give you a big list of them.
- 4:08It starts tonight. I love Virginia tonight.
- 4:11You do. They're celebrating their team
- 4:14that upset Florida State for the first ever ACC loss.
- 4:17They're going to be there, really charged up atmosphere.
- 4:20They're off to a really good start.
- 4:22And yeah, this Virginia team and it's.
- 4:25That's. Interesting.
- 4:26You know, when you think of decent Virginia teams here over
- 4:28the last, I don't know, a couple of decades, you think of, I
- 4:31think of Al Grove, Al Grove, right slow plotting kind of
- 4:34that's not the case this year. They're they're putting points
- 4:37up on the board and they got a quarterback that you probably
- 4:39remember. Chandler Morris.
- 4:42Yes, Chandler Morris is the the quarterback there.
- 4:45Oklahoma, TCU and now he threw for 380 yards last time.
- 4:49For the state of a quarterback. Absolutely.
- 4:51What's the number? Get the touchdown.
- 4:54You're getting a touchdown at home Friday night. 6 1/2
- 4:57starting to pop in the market. This is one of my first bets of
- 4:59the week. I got it.
- 5:00Really. Yeah.
- 5:01So the games I like tonight is TCU.
- 5:04Three 3 1/2 starting to show a little bit on Arizona State.
- 5:07I lean your way with TCU on this one.
- 5:11I'm just struggling to get my arms wrapped around Arizona
- 5:13State with. You and I love Hoover.
- 5:15You do too. Absolutely.
- 5:16You don't. It almost feels like, and I know
- 5:18Tyson's an absolute stud, so you get it.
- 5:21And it feels like they're almost targeting too much.
- 5:23Yeah. Maybe.
- 5:23Like they're that Levitt's just trying to press every single
- 5:26thing to him and you got to get some other guys involved and,
- 5:29and maybe that's what. Last year they didn't have to
- 5:31get anybody involved. And maybe you're kind of falling
- 5:33back and it won't happen, you know, from what it was a season
- 5:36ago. But Levitt's had a nice year,
- 5:38but not a great year. I agree.
- 5:40Yep, I agree with you. He's probably, I don't know,
- 5:43middle of the pack when it comes to Big 12 quarterbacks.
- 5:45There's a lot of Big 12 quarterbacks on that list.
- 5:48They really are. Rocco, you can make an argument
- 5:52towards the top of that list, if not at the top of the list, with
- 5:55the winds also coupled in. There still like Hoover better.
- 5:57But you go through and you you just look at these guys and the
- 6:00there's a bunch of conferences, absolutely ridiculous.
- 6:04We'll see another one tonight with Houston and what we've seen
- 6:07from kind of Wakeman, what he's been able to do, he's been a
- 6:09runner, he's been excellent. It just goes on and on this
- 6:12conference. At the quarterback position, you
- 6:15can make arguments about the teams and maybe at the national
- 6:18level where they kind of rank with everybody, but in terms of
- 6:20quarterback play, they don't play second fiddle to anybody.
- 6:23No, you're 1000% right. There may be some disappointing
- 6:26news coming out when it comes to Iowa State and their secondary.
- 6:30So I saw this yesterday from student reporter with the Iowa
- 6:34State Daily. You know what I want to I want
- 6:36to get this kids name because I want you.
- 6:39Do I want to give him credit for what?
- 6:41Zander White. Zander White.
- 6:43I want to have Zander White on the radio and pat him on the
- 6:45back publicly next. Week.
- 6:47That would be a great thing, absolutely.
- 6:49Because he broke the story he did, and he was willing to break
- 6:53the story, which even goes further in my book.
- 6:56At 3:10 PM yesterday, this is what Xander White had to say.
- 6:59I'm hearing talks from sources around Cyclone Athletics that
- 7:02Jeremiah Cooper is officially ruled out for the rest of the
- 7:05season. The injury allegedly happened in
- 7:08a one-on-one drill in practice that resulted in Cooper's torn
- 7:11ACL. He continues next week.
- 7:14Reports Working earlier this evening by an employee of
- 7:17Cyclone Football who saw it happen.
- 7:19Cooper's injury is also confirmed to be a torn ACL.
- 7:22That from Zander White. Well done, young man.
- 7:25Yes, for sure you're on the right path.
- 7:28Don't, don't give up. Continue even if even though
- 7:33it's not might not be easy and they may not be very pleased
- 7:35with you. Zander White in some of the some
- 7:39of the spaces over in Ames when it comes to the athletic
- 7:41department, you did the right thing and we'll we'll see.
- 7:44But he was on the injury report, not Sander Cooper yesterday.
- 7:48He was not on it Wednesday. He was added to it yesterday.
- 7:51So it seems as though some bad news coming Iowa states away
- 7:55when it comes to the secondary. Obviously there'll be another
- 7:57injury report tonight. Does it go a step further
- 8:00tonight and then tomorrow and when we get the final,
- 8:03obviously, but we'll just wait, wait to find out for sure.
- 8:06But I believe Xander White. How about that?
- 8:09I am right there with you. I mean, that's when put your
- 8:11neck out on the line. And there's other rumblings this
- 8:14message board says social media that is.
- 8:15But. He was first.
- 8:16And he was first credit where credit is due.
- 8:20So that means you got Jontez on one side, Yep, who's
- 8:23outstanding, Yep. On the other, Trey Bell.
- 8:25Who I like. Who looks solid?
- 8:27Yep. And then.
- 8:33Mm. Hmm, yeah, that'll be a question
- 8:35for Eugene Repay as who becomes that third guy.
- 8:38And you know, if you're looking for a nickel corner type of guy,
- 8:41who is that dude? You had three.
- 8:43You felt really good about him. But there was a reason also that
- 8:46they moved Jeremiah Cooper. There's two reasons.
- 8:48First, because they're so deep in safety.
- 8:49Yep, every sneaking year talked about yesterday with with John.
- 8:54I mean, Neil might be the best player on that defense.
- 8:56Could be he's playing at that level.
- 8:58And Orange is a draft pick. Jamison Patton is off to a good
- 9:01start. They love Cummings, Coleman.
- 9:03Yep. I mean, that guy.
- 9:04We're here in the bus going back to the spring and he being
- 9:07denter, he talks a little bit too much for my liking because
- 9:10he never shuts his mouth. Yeah, but he's gonna be a
- 9:13player. He's still just a red shirt.
- 9:14Freshman Sergius. I mean, they're so deep.
- 9:16Back there, Sergius missed a significant amount of time last
- 9:19year, however. Cornerback.
- 9:21Yeah. I mean, is it Betty Nagoya time?
- 9:25Oh, it hasn't been as of yet. He's been banged up, though.
- 9:27Has he? I think for some reason that
- 9:30that sticks in my mind that he's been dealing with something out
- 9:33here in the early portions of the season.
- 9:35Maybe it's Lamos, maybe it's Taylor, we'll see, But that's
- 9:39definitely one to keep an eye on against Nofafida.
- 9:42Speaking of good quarterbacks, here comes another one from
- 9:44Arizona. No, the good news is McMillan is
- 9:47used up his eligibility. He's a Carolina Panther and he
- 9:50was absolutely gifted. So we'll see where that goes
- 9:53before he gets into Iowa and Indiana.
- 9:55We'll do that in a second. Just back the last night quickly
- 9:57because I I want to spend a little bit of time with it.
- 10:00It we we talked about the end of the show yesterday that that
- 10:03Marvin Harrison Junior like, what is wrong with this guy,
- 10:05right? That he makes that catch.
- 10:07And then when he put but he was awful early in the game, he had
- 10:10a. Couple of just terrible drops,
- 10:11the whole team look lethargic. They're not good, Trent.
- 10:14They got back into it. I'll give him credit for that.
- 10:16But I want to give Harrison Junior credit 'cause he made a
- 10:18hell of a catch in the end zone for a touchdown.
- 10:22And it wasn't, I mean, everybody was it's, you know, noticing
- 10:25that this guy was supposed to be a star.
- 10:27He was a can't miss, right? And he's been swinging to miss
- 10:31up until the last point, the second-half of that game last
- 10:33night. What did you think of Seattle, I
- 10:35guess is my main point. Are they a legitimate threat in
- 10:38the NFC? To win it no, I can't get there
- 10:41I. Can't either.
- 10:42Not that way, Arnold. Yeah, he's fine.
- 10:46You know, but we saw what he turned into last year when they
- 10:49got to the playoffs. The the pressure, when you get
- 10:51pressure on him, he's a bad quarterback.
- 10:53It's difficult to do. And I think that Seattle
- 10:55offensive line certainly improved Walker in the ball
- 10:58well. He's good.
- 10:59Charbonnay got a little bit out of him.
- 11:00I love the running game, Smith and Jig but didn't have a
- 11:03monster game. Nope.
- 11:04But boy, he certainly not in the first half.
- 11:06Yeah, and a big one late. Then set up that field goal to
- 11:09get it done. Now, overall, I like them.
- 11:11They're a playoff team. Yeah, absolutely.
- 11:13But a team that even can get to an NFC Championship.
- 11:15Where? Did they rank in the NFC West?
- 11:17Well, that's the problem, right? Ahead of Arizona.
- 11:22Yeah. Are they the second best team?
- 11:24I think. I think the Niners are fool's
- 11:25gold. I do so many injury.
- 11:29I know who have they beaten. Give me their give me their
- 11:33slim. I'll get it.
- 11:34I can find it. 49ers and their three and O start.
- 11:37This is who they beat the Seahawks.
- 11:39They beat the Seahawks on the road in Week 1.
- 11:41Then they beat the Saints. Back-to-back roadies.
- 11:43And then they beat the Cardinals and.
- 11:45They survived. You know, Purdy is close to
- 11:47getting back. You're right, there are a lot of
- 11:49injuries. Weird spot with Jacksonville
- 11:51this week. Got my eye on that one.
- 11:53Do you? That might be coming up at 1:50.
- 11:55OK, yeah, well, we'll see. All right, let's get to let's
- 11:59get to Indiana and Iowa. And boy, there's a lot of people
- 12:03that handicap these games for a living that really like Iowa in
- 12:06this spot. I'm hearing more and more of
- 12:08them as the week has gone on. Well, it's a simple numbers
- 12:11play. You look at any power ranking
- 12:14system that is available out there and it shows you that,
- 12:17yes, this should be what the opening line was.
- 12:19Indiana favor by 3 1/2 Four. You couple it with the Kinect
- 12:23Stadium factor. You know, it's such an
- 12:24interesting part. We've talked so many times over
- 12:27the last three years about ranked games.
- 12:30I will owe in 10 of their last 10 ranked games.
- 12:32You know, many of those have been at Kinect Stadium.
- 12:33How many? One.
- 12:36That's it. Yeah.
- 12:37So when we go down and we talk about these conversations, maybe
- 12:41the O intent should be to the side because they haven't been
- 12:44in Kinnick and we know what a difference maker that stadium
- 12:46can be. It's one of the few stadiums in
- 12:48college football that is a 4 1/2 point stadium in most betting
- 12:52systems that are out there getting White.
- 12:53Among them, he has Kinnick as a 4 1/2 point stadium.
- 12:58There's a couple of fives out there, but it's rare and it also
- 13:00has to be situational spot to get right to those kind of
- 13:02numbers. Night games at night, yes, those
- 13:04are different ones. A white out, that's a 5 point
- 13:06state and that's what it's going to be coming up on Saturday
- 13:09night. So Kiddix Stadium is a big
- 13:11factor. I'm not surprised by it.
- 13:13And look, if you took away the uniforms, you just everything
- 13:15that we saw beginning of the season, Team X against team Y, I
- 13:19would be the exact same way. I would absolutely be on team Y,
- 13:23the team getting the points here because we've seen this happen
- 13:26too many times before. Everybody in the country I was
- 13:30watching, I love inside college football on CBS Sports Network.
- 13:33I I think they do a great job. You got a bunch of old timers
- 13:37that are on there and Randy Cross is the old time.
- 13:40OK, Yeah, Randy Cross is an old timer, right?
- 13:42Yeah, he is. And they do, I just think a
- 13:44tremendous job and they have like a 7-8 minute clip talking
- 13:47just about this game and it just Indiana, what we saw last week,
- 13:52Ken. It's just it's too often that we
- 13:55see in the momentum of being react.
- 13:57They played perfectly, absolutely perfectly on
- 14:00Saturday. Now they're going to do it in
- 14:02their first Rd. game of the season in Kinnock.
- 14:06Wish it was at night. I think it's going to be a tight
- 14:08game. Ryder Cup real quick.
- 14:12Oh God, are the Americans sunk? There was.
- 14:16So I had it on and doing a ton of things this morning, but I
- 14:19just looked up at one point and it was right as things were
- 14:23starting to dwindle down. It was before the European team
- 14:26got their first official point and won.
- 14:28But it was a cut to I think it was JT and somebody else.
- 14:31And they're kind of bickering at each other, look like who
- 14:34whoever his teammate was this morning.
- 14:35And then they cut over to the EUR shoulder by shoulder.
- 14:38He was where he was with the with the.
- 14:40Yes, yeah. And and Thomas just looked
- 14:42pissed off. And then they cut to the Euro
- 14:44team and they're shoulder to shoulder.
- 14:46Ron was playing right. And they're shoulder to shoulder
- 14:49and just smiling, just smirking as they walked up the fairway
- 14:52together just. And it was a perfect embodiment
- 14:55for me of what this is, what this competition is every two
- 14:59years is all the bad things, all the cliches about Americans as
- 15:04opposed to Europe. I mean, it shows up on this golf
- 15:07event all the time. It it was, I mean it was a 5
- 15:10second clip, but I thought it was perfect of exactly what was
- 15:13happening at that time as they jump out early.
- 15:15Yeah, it kind of sums it up, does it not?
- 15:17Well, we'll see where it goes. They're under way with the with
- 15:20the afternoon boy. Big spot obviously for the red,
- 15:25white and blue. If they're going to try and
- 15:27remain in this thing to to put some points on the board and
- 15:30hold those EUR off. I just, you know what I want, I
- 15:33wanted to, I want Sunday to roll around and Rory's going up
- 15:39against the Shambo and there's something meaningful because I
- 15:42really think that there's a kind of a hate between these two
- 15:46dudes. Right.
- 15:48I think the tiger and it was, it was going to be Sergio, it was
- 15:52going to be Phil, it was going to be, you know, they tried to
- 15:54find a rival and it really never caught him out.
- 15:57And maybe I'll give you the Mickelson tiger thing, but this
- 16:00the Shambo Rory thing, I believe it's real.
- 16:03All right, let's get Thunder Joe in here, then we'll take a
- 16:05break. We'll get our buddy Eugene Repay
- 16:08from the Des Moines Register to talk about what he thinks is
- 16:11going to happen tomorrow. Hello, Thunder Joe, how are you?
- 16:15Hey, Greg, good afternoon. Real quick on this, I thought
- 16:18when I looked at the Ryder Cup matchups today, I mean, I'm an
- 16:20armchair coach, but I thought they were stupid matchups.
- 16:22You can't. They're going to put.
- 16:24Rory and Fleetwood together, you got to hit them back with your
- 16:26bullhorns, man. You got to so Steffler and
- 16:28somebody else, because that's just a layup.
- 16:31Rory and Fleetwood on. Nobody's beat them on the
- 16:33course. And also, when you look at it,
- 16:35here's a visual on Kyler Murray, though somebody told me a while
- 16:38ago, when he's running, you won't be able to get this out of
- 16:40your head. Now when he's running, he looks
- 16:43like your toddler stole something from you and you're
- 16:45trying to chase him down. To get it back, those little
- 16:47babies. He's got those little arms.
- 16:49Yes, yes, absolutely. That's pretty good.
- 16:52He'll hold it out and then he'll tuck it back in and understand,
- 16:55yeah, you will not be able to get that of your head.
- 16:57Thank you, Thunder Joe. Appreciate it.
- 16:59Enjoy your weekend. Yeah, that's pretty good.
- 17:01All right, take time out. Eugene Repay is coming up next.
- 17:03We'll get his thoughts on what he expects to see tomorrow.
- 17:06Arizona, Iowa State sold out, White out under the lights, Jack
- 17:09Trice Stadium. Miller and Condon, we're
- 17:12underway on a football Friday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 17:15Network. Miller, Condon, welcome back to
- 17:31Moines sports station one O 6.3 KX&O statewide on the Iowa
- 17:35Sports Radio Network. Welcome to the program.
- 17:37Mike Palm coming up in 15 minutes.
- 17:40We'll head out to Las Vegas with the VP of operations at Circus
- 17:43Sports. But right now the beat writer
- 17:46beat reporter for the Iowa State Cyclones for
- 17:50desmoinesregister.com he is Eugene repay Eugene Trenton can
- 17:54as always thank you for coming on Arizona pays a visit tomorrow
- 17:58up both of these schools coming off a bye week and away we go
- 18:02again. Eugene good to talk to you.
- 18:04How are you? I'm good, I'm good.
- 18:06We come back from the bye week and all of a sudden we have news
- 18:09on the basketball, football front and it's a it's a fun time
- 18:11to be a Cyclone again. Absolutely.
- 18:13Well, let's get to the the cycle of the news, Jeremiah Cooper.
- 18:16Boy, it sure seems like there's way more smoke for that for
- 18:19there not to be any fire. The news that potentially this
- 18:23might be a season ender seemingly that's so we're going
- 18:27to find that out here sometime either tonight or tomorrow.
- 18:30What are you hearing when it comes to Jeremiah Cooper,
- 18:32Eugene? Yeah, the rumors are the rumor
- 18:34mill is definitely turning all across the board.
- 18:37I mean from the Internet, social media and everywhere.
- 18:40Some of it right now, a lot of it is unconfirmed.
- 18:45But what we do know is that he's quote UN quote questionable for
- 18:48the availability report and just him being on there definitely
- 18:51raised a ton of eyebrows. From what I've heard, he was
- 18:54spotted with a knee brace. I feel like anything saying
- 18:58anything after than that would be a bit irresponsible at this
- 19:02point. But you know, definite concerns
- 19:04from social media fans that this might be a very serious injury.
- 19:09The initial rumors are ACL, but right now nothing has been
- 19:13confirmed. There's been no statements made
- 19:15and nothing yet other than that he's quote UN quote questionable
- 19:19for Saturday. Well, let's play that.
- 19:22It is something like that ACL out for the season and let's go
- 19:25next. Jeremiah Cooper slide over from
- 19:27safety, did it because of depth. These irresponsible Trey Bell is
- 19:30going to be the starter. Then opposite John Tez Williams,
- 19:33however, who becomes that third quarterback who is the next guy
- 19:36in line? And then Nagoya is kind of that
- 19:38next project, that big tall guy like they did before, and it
- 19:41worked out so incredibly well. What about Nagoya?
- 19:44Any other names at the cornerback spot that would make
- 19:47sense for you? Yeah, Benny Nagoya is definitely
- 19:50one of the one of the guys to watch.
- 19:52He hasn't really played too much I felt like.
- 19:54But Quinton Taylor Junior is another cornerback to keep an
- 19:56eye on. I know David Coffey was another
- 19:58guy that they were high on as well in that quarterback room.
- 20:01But really it's it's a big drop off either way.
- 20:04I mean, Trey Bell especially just him coming off the Arkansas
- 20:06State game is huge. He had a great game against the
- 20:09Red Wolves and had that pick as well.
- 20:12But after that, it's looking pretty thin, that cornerback.
- 20:15But Benny Nagoya and Quinton Taylor Junior would probably be
- 20:18my top. Two names to watch it at corner.
- 20:20When the schedule came out, we saw that Arizona is going to be
- 20:23the first Big 12 opponent, at least we call it the mainland.
- 20:29And they we thought, well, there's a win, right?
- 20:31Everybody just because based on last year, this was not a good
- 20:34football team. Last year they had some parts,
- 20:36but for whatever reason we're unable to put it together.
- 20:40That's not the case this year. Eugene, this looks like a pretty
- 20:43competent group. What do you expect from Arizona
- 20:46tomorrow? But much more improved team and
- 20:49you could just see they had the home and home with Kansas State.
- 20:52Last year they got blown out by Kansas State 31 to 7 and again,
- 20:55they barely did anything. They come back this year, they
- 20:58went at 23 to 17. And while K State isn't exactly
- 21:02hasn't been doing too hard and they only have one win this
- 21:04year. That's a pretty good barometer,
- 21:06pretty good measuring stick, especially considering how close
- 21:09I would think it Iowa State's game was against Kansas State.
- 21:13Arizona just looks a lot more competent this year.
- 21:15They've rebuilt their whole coaching staff, new offensive
- 21:18coordinator, new defensive coordinator, shift some guys
- 21:20around. Their defense is older, wiser
- 21:23and has been playing well up to this point.
- 21:26Noah Fafida is a talented dual third quarterback that's played
- 21:29turnover free football. So I'm expecting a much better
- 21:32showing out of the Wildcats this year.
- 21:34Will it actually culminate into anything?
- 21:36We'll see. Last year they actually started
- 21:38out three and one and then they finished four and eight.
- 21:40So, so far they've taken care of business but their first two
- 21:44games relatively unproven. They'll get a big test and and a
- 21:47possibly a big opportunity to make a statement against the
- 21:49Cyclones. One thing that jumped out,
- 21:51watched a lot of the Kansas State Arizona game is that
- 21:53defense. They've improved so much on that
- 21:55side of the football. What kind of issues do you see
- 21:58there, Fafita? He's playing outstanding and
- 22:00when we know what he can do, but would he go through that defense
- 22:03and and some of the things that they can do to maybe upset Rocco
- 22:05and company? Yeah, just the way that they
- 22:08approached the game this year is a lot more different.
- 22:10And that's something that Taylor Mauser was super complimentary
- 22:13of. And like you said, when you look
- 22:15at their play so far this season, there's just so much
- 22:17more aggressive, the way that they blitz, the way that they're
- 22:20able to put pressure on the quarterback.
- 22:22I think they have 8 different guys that have had a hand in at
- 22:24least one sack this season or 1/2 or assisted on a sack.
- 22:28So a lot of different guys getting active and involved.
- 22:31Their secondary has been playing pretty well up to this point as
- 22:33well. They've been winning the
- 22:35turnover battle eight to two over these last three games.
- 22:38So this is just overall a much more aggressive, much more
- 22:41assertive defensive unit. They've impressed everyone so
- 22:44far. I mean, they're outscoring
- 22:45opponents 111 to 26 and we'll see how that translates to big
- 22:49twelves play, but much better this year.
- 22:51Last year they were 13th out of 16th and points allowed and
- 22:54offensive yards per game allowed.
- 22:56And so far, it's been a much improved season for them.
- 23:00Basketball in just a second, Berkel and Flora back in the
- 23:03lineup by in all likelihood, do we expect Berkel to be 100% full
- 23:08going to pick up right where he left off?
- 23:09Because I mean, he showed us last year he was really error
- 23:14was pointing up. It looks like he's going to be
- 23:16make it at that position this year.
- 23:18He even looks better. Is Berkeley going to be 100% do
- 23:21you think tomorrow? I personally believe that he'll
- 23:24be close to that just because he traveled with the team, the
- 23:26Arkansas State, him being out seemed like a very more like a
- 23:31precautionary move, like it was like a last minute bump and
- 23:33bruise. According to Matt Campbell and
- 23:35some other members of the coaching staff, it was a he got
- 23:38dinged up in the Thursday before the Arkansas State game.
- 23:41Felt like maybe they could have trotted him out, but they
- 23:43decided, you know, hey, it's Arkansas State, we got the bye
- 23:45coming up, might as well rest them.
- 23:47So I, I think that he'll be in better position or close to
- 23:51100%. He should be in pretty good
- 23:52shape for tomorrow. Good stuff there.
- 23:55Eugene Rappain joining us as we take a look at Iowa State and
- 23:59Arizona on the gridiron and we're talking about the Big 12
- 24:01and the quarterback play. Rocco amongst the the top in the
- 24:05league this bye week, though, getting the the guy's health,
- 24:08getting some other reps You know, one question I had cut him
- 24:11overly, you know, he was banged up and that was the reason that
- 24:13we saw Alex Mansky listed in that backup spot for him.
- 24:17Any update on his availability that injury or if it's just
- 24:20going to be Mansky as a backup going forward?
- 24:23I think that he is in better shape.
- 24:25I think it was after, I'm trying to remember if it was after the
- 24:27Cyhawk game or after the South Dakota game.
- 24:31But Campbell had just mentioned that Moberly was the start of
- 24:35return to practice. So it's not necessarily that
- 24:37Mansky is, you know, that guy or the backup.
- 24:39It was just more so that Moberly was unavailable, but that he was
- 24:42back practicing again. So I feel here we are three
- 24:45weeks later, 2-3 weeks later, you know, it's he should be in
- 24:48better shape now. And I'm sure he's still in the
- 24:50picture. According to Campbell.
- 24:53After I think it was a South Dakota game because that was
- 24:55when we saw Mansky out there. But he said that wasn't exactly
- 24:58an indictment on Moberly or a statement on Mansky.
- 25:01It was just more so that was the availability.
- 25:03Now with Moberly Deck practicing, got a few weeks
- 25:05under his belt. Maybe he's back there in the in
- 25:08the depth charter in the pictures.
- 25:10Tame and Lipsy, obviously some disappointing news for his sake
- 25:14that he's going to miss miss a little bit of time.
- 25:16What do you think Eugene is? Is there a rush to get him back?
- 25:20For obviously you want to have when you head to Las Vegas in a
- 25:23in a perfect world, he's ready and he's good to go by then.
- 25:26But is there a chance that this lingers into the early portion
- 25:29of the schedule? You've got to think that it does
- 25:32and to what degree. Well, we'll see.
- 25:34But definitely disappointing, heartbreaking, just all the
- 25:37things. I mean, for taming lips.
- 25:38He with all the injuries that he's dealt with throughout his
- 25:40career, you finally hear how he's the healthy he's been.
- 25:43He puts all the other stuff behind the shoulder, the groin,
- 25:46the finger. Coming into his senior year, you
- 25:48just wanted the guy to be healthy and kind of go out on
- 25:51his terms. I think that it might limit him
- 25:54in the in the beginning parts of the season.
- 25:56I'm curious to see how he responds to it and, and you know
- 25:59how this will affect him going into the season.
- 26:01But one thing that that is worth noting is last year that they
- 26:05were throughout practice, they were kind of, they had to hold
- 26:07Tim Lipsy back. Like Tim Lipsy as we know, this
- 26:10guy will go 1000% if he can walk, if he can move, he can put
- 26:15his jersey on. He's going to do it for this
- 26:17team and they actually had to limit him in practice at points
- 26:20like have them sit out in a in a way of like load management just
- 26:23to keep them in good shape for games.
- 26:25I'm curious to see, you know, how to what degree that they do
- 26:28that again this year. But MCL injury is definitely no
- 26:32fun. Four to six weeks right now.
- 26:34It's looking like a late October return.
- 26:37So maybe around like the preseason exhibitions or just
- 26:40kind of the early parts of the season, but should be
- 26:43interesting for sure. And of course, that play, the
- 26:45point guard playmaker depth is we're not really there this
- 26:48year, so I'm curious to see how Iowa State handles it.
- 26:51Good stuff Eugene, as always, we appreciate you coming on.
- 26:54We will speak with you next week if your schedule allows.
- 26:57Thank you, Eugene. Appreciate it.
- 26:59Thanks guys. Have a good one.
- 27:00Yeah, good to talk to Eugene Repay and Travis Hines.
- 27:02They have Cyclone Insider Thursday night for you Cyclone
- 27:05fans out there on Des Moines Sports Station, 106.3 kicks and
- 27:09off from six until 7. All right, we'll take your time
- 27:11out. We'll come back.
- 27:13We will head to Las Vegas, catch up with our friend Mike Palm, VP
- 27:16of operations at Circa Sports. He's next, Miller and Condon on
- 27:19the Iowa Sports Radio Network. Hi, Miller and Condon, Welcome
- 27:31back, Iowa Sports Radio Network. Trenton, Ken with you until just
- 27:34before 2. At that time, off the bench,
- 27:38come Lucas and Sean. They're at the rally House in
- 27:41Ames for their program today from 2:00 until 5.
- 27:44Let's head to Las Vegas. He's the VP of operations at
- 27:47Circa Sports. He's Mike, Paul, Mike Trenton.
- 27:49Ken got a I'll tell you during the first commercial break,
- 27:52somebody called in and asked about the artist talking about
- 27:54the Golden Gate and the promotion.
- 27:57He's taking his grandson to Vegas for his 21st birthday and
- 28:01asked if that is, you know, what nights of the week of that does
- 28:04that taking place. I said every night of the week
- 28:06for the for the next year. So.
- 28:08So it's working. How's it going over in Las
- 28:10Vegas? The night starts at Golden Gate
- 28:12six to seven with an open bar. So we're averaging, we've done
- 28:18one full week, right. We started last Friday and we
- 28:20did through Thursday last night and we're averaging just under
- 28:24400 redemptions a night. And it's not like it was just
- 28:27Friday, Saturday that the highest night was last night was
- 28:30440. So it's pretty amazing folks are
- 28:33coming in and you know, and not necessarily just leaving at
- 28:377:00, but open bar from six to seven and you draw an envelope.
- 28:41The envelope has anywhere from 5 to $1000 in it.
- 28:45There's some 5 hundreds and two 50s, a bunch of hundreds and 50s
- 28:48and 20 fives. So folks seem to really like it
- 28:51so far. So Speaking of the Golden Gate,
- 28:53you also have some changes there as it pertains to the table
- 28:56games. Explain that a little bit more
- 28:59in the casino down there, changing the way that you go
- 29:02about, you know me, I like to roll the dice and play some
- 29:04craps there. So the changes in the casino
- 29:06games that you see at the Golden Gate.
- 29:09Yeah. So we took out all the live
- 29:10table games and and that center there next to the bar
- 29:14prohibition is replaced with all electronic table games.
- 29:18So it's not as if you can't play table games, they just won't be
- 29:20with a live dealer. The reality is with the
- 29:23increasing cost of the minimum wage every year, it's a very
- 29:28labor intensive business table games and we don't have enough
- 29:31staff or can't maintain enough staff to fill to open up all the
- 29:35games at the three properties. So we made a decision to take
- 29:39those dealers and supervisors and move them to circuit and the
- 29:42D to be able to offer more table hours at those properties where
- 29:47they're frankly busier, right, You get more revenue per labor
- 29:51hour worked. So but nobody lost their job.
- 29:53Everybody was retained that wanted to a couple couple
- 29:57retired, but but otherwise all those folks you saw at Golden
- 30:02Gate are either at the D or Circa now.
- 30:04And if you like history, this is the oldest hotel in Nevada,
- 30:07correct? Yeah, the address is 1 Tremont
- 30:12St. and the telephone number was one.
- 30:14It was the first phone in the phone in Nevada, the first hotel
- 30:17in Nevada. One that is incredible.
- 30:20Good stuff. I want to ask about the Ryder
- 30:22Cup to start, Mike, obviously the EUR got off early this
- 30:25morning. They have the lead, although it
- 30:27looks like the Americans are pushing back a little bit in
- 30:30current play. Speaking of play, what kind of
- 30:32play do you guys, what kind of right do you guys get on an
- 30:34event like the Ryder Cup every other year?
- 30:40It does about what a non major tournament would do just right
- 30:46around there. So you know, it's kind of hard
- 30:49because the betting options are more limited than a normal
- 30:52tournament. You do have matchups that you
- 30:54can bet each day, but you're betting team play instead of,
- 30:58you know, top five, top two people love the bet top five,
- 31:01top ten, top 20 will or not make the cut.
- 31:03These things aren't available really in the Ryder Cup.
- 31:06So I would say a normal 2nd to 3rd tier tournament is about
- 31:11what the right is. Wow.
- 31:15All right, I got a couple of things off of golf and into
- 31:19football. In fact, I want to start on the
- 31:21local front because if this was anybody other than the Iowa
- 31:23Hawkeyes, I know I would be locked and loaded on the Hawks
- 31:26this week or that team after Indiana's performance last week.
- 31:30What power number? Say what?
- 31:31You guys open this number. Indiana -4 now north of a
- 31:35touchdown in a bunch of different places.
- 31:37Take us into the betting side of Iowa, Indiana, what you guys are
- 31:41seeing because this feels like it's setting up very much to be
- 31:44a pros versus Joe's type of play.
- 31:46Absolutely, especially once the number got to seven.
- 31:50But the public is remembers what they saw.
- 31:53And what they saw was Indiana's dismantling of Illinois and what
- 31:57was one of the feature games last week.
- 31:59I don't know, maybe Fox wants to sue Brett Bielema for taking all
- 32:02the luster up at 9:00 AM our time.
- 32:04Big noon, they call it, right? USC at Illinois, Well, giving up
- 32:07seventy kind of take some of the shine off that.
- 32:11And so the, you know, look, I didn't know that.
- 32:15I didn't think I would necessarily deserve to be a road
- 32:17favorite last Friday night at Rutgers, but the offense is
- 32:23playing better now. The Rutgers is not a top tier
- 32:26Big 10 defense, but the offense at least look competent.
- 32:30Special teams obviously gave them a boost.
- 32:34Every year somebody goes into Kennick and loses.
- 32:36That's a top ten team, right? Top five a lot of the times.
- 32:39Usually it's in late October or November.
- 32:42Could it be in late September that we see it this year that
- 32:45the Hawkeyes told the upset? I wouldn't be shocked if it
- 32:48happened. If Indiana goes in there and
- 32:50wins by 21, then I think they're a legitimate threat to the top
- 32:55tier teams in the big. Ten yeah, I do too.
- 32:57Meanwhile, starting at six O clock in Ames, we've got Arizona
- 33:01paying a visit to Iowa State, but he's also got a couple of, I
- 33:04mean, just mammoth games, Alabama and Georgia and of
- 33:08course, Oregon at Penn State. I think the book is going to be
- 33:11very busy tomorrow night. Overall, what's college football
- 33:14been like? You've told us over the last few
- 33:16years that it's slowly building up.
- 33:18It'll never, I don't think, catch Sunday.
- 33:21But is it still trending in a positive direction as far as
- 33:23people in the book and people betting on these games?
- 33:29For that question, no, It's been very like this year.
- 33:32Saturdays have not been great, especially Saturday daytime.
- 33:36It was a ghost town for Utah. Texas Tech at 9:00 AM last week,
- 33:41which we've never seen in the last three years.
- 33:45The crowd just didn't really pick up till about four in the
- 33:47afternoon. You know, a lot of the 12:30
- 33:50matchups haven't been greater. 230 your time.
- 33:53Yeah, they just haven't been compelling this year.
- 33:56It's a shame. Georgia, Alabama and Penn State,
- 33:58Oregon's at the same time. And of course, Iowa State right
- 34:01up against that. Stormies and Ames, by the way.
- 34:04Yeah, to cover the game for ESPN.
- 34:07So let me. If the crowd isn't, if we're not
- 34:11packed this Saturday with this lineup, then we definitely have
- 34:13a problem. Now, the handle is only slightly
- 34:16off. I think we're down about 3% in
- 34:18college football as compared to the last two years averaged
- 34:21together. But definitely the, the number
- 34:24of people at stadium swim and, and the book particularly.
- 34:27And I was at Bar Canada last Saturday and it was, I mean,
- 34:30when the the, when the Utah game kicked, there might not have
- 34:33been 15 people there. It is.
- 34:36I'm surprised. Well, this week you also get
- 34:39Notre Dame in their early windows.
- 34:40They go to Arkansas in a weird spot there.
- 34:42There's been a lot of steam early on, the Razorbacks and
- 34:45that one Notre Dame. Defensive injuries are probably
- 34:47a part of that. Notre Dame for you guys, Is that
- 34:51where you see a bump? Notre Dame's playing in one of
- 34:53the windows that a lot of Irish fans make their way over to the
- 34:57sports book. Notre Dame, not the biggest, but
- 35:01they definitely have a national following.
- 35:02So you you see people, but Texas is big when Texas plays,
- 35:08Oklahoma's big when Oklahoma plays, obviously Michigan, the
- 35:11Big 10 schools, because that's where a lot of our customers
- 35:15come from. If Notre Dame's into like a
- 35:17Notre Dame Miami or Notre Dame USC where it's two national
- 35:20teams, you'll really you'll really feel it there.
- 35:22It's a tricky spot. This is Arkansas Super Bowl.
- 35:24It's you know, you say they play in the SEC, but they're not
- 35:27going to win the SEC. They played awfully well to lose
- 35:31that game in Memphis last week. I thought they were the better
- 35:33team. This Taylan Green I think will
- 35:35play on Sundays. He's he's special, their
- 35:37quarterback. And Notre Dame really hasn't
- 35:39been able to get people off the field.
- 35:41There's the concern there. I mean, the look ahead in the
- 35:43games of the year. This was 10 and now we're seeing
- 35:45it down at 4 1/2 and 4. We'll get to the NFLI don't want
- 35:49to just forget about baseball because it's been so good all
- 35:52year long. And here we are in the final
- 35:54weekend of the regular season. There's so much to play for.
- 35:57The Tigers may not even make the playoffs are having after having
- 36:01an insurmountable lead. Seemingly Blue Jays and Yankees
- 36:04are tied. What's going to happen?
- 36:06Is Cincinnati going to get a wild card to the Mets fallout?
- 36:09They're so it. Can Houston get in?
- 36:11Mike, this is a great weekend of baseball on top of everything
- 36:14else that we've got going on. It's interesting, I had a friend
- 36:18say to me the other day, why isn't baseball in their regular
- 36:21season on a Wednesday, start the wild card and start the wild
- 36:25cards Friday, Saturday and do the wild card series Friday,
- 36:28Saturday, Sunday. It would be actually incredible
- 36:32because everybody would be watching Monday, Tuesday,
- 36:34Wednesday, right? The final days of the year, the
- 36:37last two days of the year will get lost in the football.
- 36:41So I thought it was an interesting thought, but yeah,
- 36:44there's so many different angles and I was almost concerned the
- 36:48Cubs were going to play their way out of the four seed and
- 36:50have to go on the road and in the in the wild card round.
- 36:54Hopefully that won't happen. I think you're probably rooting
- 36:57for cold, cooler weather with San Diego coming in, if you can
- 37:00get that for the Cubs. But yeah, a lot of intriguing.
- 37:04Maybe the American League, first of all, is up for grabs anyhow,
- 37:07whoever gets in has a chance. And we don't even know.
- 37:12I mean, if Detroit somehow misses the playoffs, do they
- 37:16even bring Hench back? I don't know.
- 37:20I tend to thank the team in the American League that has value
- 37:22right now is actually the Yankees.
- 37:25I think there's some problems in Toronto, not only with injuries,
- 37:28but with obviously there's some dissension.
- 37:30Jose. Yeah, they're they're How about
- 37:32the Reds? The Reds are holding the bat so
- 37:34tight it's unbelievable. But how about with moving
- 37:37Barrios to the bullpen and all the problems there?
- 37:40I mean, who's going to be your starter for for Toronto in the
- 37:43playoffs? Scouseman.
- 37:44I guess. You can't start Scherzer.
- 37:48No, I'm it's, it's a patchwork. So it's interesting.
- 37:51Seattle, maybe, maybe they're the one that's poised to to make
- 37:55it this year. I don't know.
- 37:56But it'll certainly be a very interesting playoff by 30 to 1.
- 37:59Brewers ticket. You know, my big concern for the
- 38:04Brewers is the Dodgers, though. I mean, you can you can go out
- 38:08there and throw Yamamoto, who's been dominant six straight
- 38:11starts, and Gaussman and Snell and use Otani and Sasaki in the
- 38:15bullpen. As bad as their bullpen has
- 38:16been, you still have two quality starters.
- 38:18You saw Sasaki and Kershaw pitch in that game Wednesday night.
- 38:22And relief. So as as all the injuries the
- 38:24Dodgers have had, as much as we said they failed to meet all the
- 38:26expectations, I still think they're really dangerous right
- 38:30now. Wide open American League.
- 38:32Wrapping things up with me, Mike, over to Circa Survivor,
- 38:35the Bills, the free square for a lot of people this week.
- 38:38I used them last week. A lot of people love the Broncos
- 38:40on Monday night against that banged up Bengals team.
- 38:43I used Denver in Week 1. I might have to hold my nose
- 38:45this week. I might have to take the
- 38:47Patriots, the Texans, something like that and win this contest.
- 38:51He got to get to the end. And I guess that's the way that
- 38:53I'm kind of looking at it. But how many people do you think
- 38:56are going to be using Buffalo this week?
- 38:59Denver said the all time nominal number of selections in Week 1
- 39:02was 7000. Of course it's because we had
- 39:0418,000 people. I think that'll be exceeded.
- 39:07I think they'll be be 8000 or more on.
- 39:11But it's just, it is really just a free square.
- 39:13And I hate to say professional teams are tanking, but boy, you
- 39:16watch the same play. It's it's, it's hard to believe
- 39:20players don't tank, but organizations certainly can.
- 39:25Yeah. So you don't, you don't have
- 39:27those two free squares. It's very interesting, isn't it?
- 39:33It is I. I I think this is the time to
- 39:36use the Texans, although I don't I don't that I don't even hate
- 39:40Packers, actually. That's what we're doing.
- 39:42We're using the Packers and the Broncos and we have the Bills
- 39:45and are saving the Bills and I'm hoping for the impossible.
- 39:49We shall see, Mike. October.
- 39:52Right. We got a minute left, and I
- 39:54meant to bring this up last week, and I know it's somewhat
- 39:56not old news, but you had a chance to talk to Christine
- 39:59Brennan for one of your shows over in Illinois.
- 40:03How did it go, Mike? Obviously she wrote a book on
- 40:05Caitlin Clark. I'm guessing that was a big part
- 40:07of the conversation. Got like 30.
- 40:10Yeah, I think the thing that I took from her was just how badly
- 40:16managed the WNBA is. And it isn't necessarily
- 40:19anything against Caitlin Clark. It's just they they didn't know
- 40:22how to handle her stardom in the way a David Stern could have
- 40:26handled Magic and and Bird and then Jordan coming into the
- 40:29league and just used it to catapult it.
- 40:32Instead, they really muted what could have been tremendous
- 40:35results. The app coming up September
- 40:3830th, you're going to have to download it if you're a circuit
- 40:41customer. If you're not, what a perfect
- 40:42time to get involved. Still looking at that date,
- 40:44Mike? Yeah, we're hopeful.
- 40:47I mean, if you ask me in 2 hours I'll give you a different date,
- 40:49but we're keeping our fingers crossed.
- 40:51And we'll keep our audience notified.
- 40:52Thank you, Mike Palm, you have a great, great afternoon.
- 40:55Good weekend. Thanks buddy.
- 40:56Yeah, good luck to the Cyclones and Hawkeyes this weekend.
- 40:59Hour 2 coming up next, Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports
- 41:02Radio Network.
