- 0:01SPEAKER_01: Welcome to Five Good Minutes.
- 0:03SPEAKER_01: You're listening to today's inspirational message on the book of Genesis with Dan Irvin.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Well, as we jump back into Genesis chapter 40 today, we see two more characters introduced in the in the story.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: We see two of Pharaoh's officials, the chief cupbearer to the king and the chief baker.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: And Pharaoh is angry with these men, and he puts them in the same prison that Joseph's in.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: And we actually see then Joseph be put uh in charge under watch of these officials.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: And Joseph uh has this interaction with them early in chapter 40, verses five through eight.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: It reads this way After they had been in custody for some time, each of the two men, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were being held in prison, had a dream that same night, and each dream had a meaning of its own.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: When Joseph came to them the next morning, he saw that they were dejected.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: So he asked Pharaoh's officials who were in custody with him in the master's house, Why do you look so sad today?
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Verse 8, we both had dreams, they answered, but there is no one to interpret them.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: So here's this moment where Joseph is not where he wants to be.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: He's got plenty of issues going on in his own life, and then in walks the cupbearer and the baker, and they're in prison, and Joseph notices something about them in this interaction.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: You know, he asks them, why are they so sad today?
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: And just consider that for a moment.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Joseph had every every reason to be fully consumed with his own mess, his own problems.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: He was in prison, wrongly imprisoned, his brothers had betrayed him.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: You know, he had every reason to just wallow in self-pity and question God, God, where are you in any of this?
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: But instead of having this kind of inward mentality, inward woe is me, Joseph has this attitude to look out and to see someone right in front of him and notice what they were going through.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: You know, I think one of the easiest traps we can fall into and that I can fall into is that when my life becomes hard, it's easy for me to be just absorbed with that hard thing that's that's going on.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: And it's not even necessarily a conscious thing, something that I mean to do.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: But I think the the suffering that we go through that it's it's real and it kind of shrinks our perspective on the world, and all we can see is right in front of us, whatever it is, disappointment, anxiety, uh, a prayer that's been left seemingly unanswered.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: And we're so focused on what we're going through that it's really easy to miss the people that God has put right in front of us.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I think we imagine that the work of God, like doing something that God's size was is remarkable, miraculous, it's it's moving mountains, it's something along those lines.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: But I I think the reality of what God is trying to do in people in the world today is significant, much more significant than we could realize.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: And I think sometimes it's it's ordinary, it's every day.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: It's leaning in, it's it's listening, it's asking the question, it's sending that text message, checking in with somebody, it's saying, Hey, you don't seem quite like yourself today.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Is everything okay?
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: You know, I imagine when Joseph started this conversation with these two men, he didn't know that these two men were going to become part of God's plan as we'll see the chapter unfold.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: But all he did was notice, all he did was enter into their lives.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: You know, and the beauty of this for me as I read this and think about this is we don't have to have it all figured out.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: We don't have to know what God is doing with a step of obedience in order for obedience to count.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: You know, Joseph didn't wake up that morning and think, I'm gonna take a step forward here and becoming second in command in Egypt, which is eventually how things play out here.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: But he he simply saw two people that were in need, and he walked towards them.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: You know, that reminds me too of how Jesus lived, the life of Jesus.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: He he was being constantly interrupted by people calling out, you know, a leper calling his name, a blind man getting in his way, uh a grieving family losing their son.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Jesus spent time weeping with them.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: You know, children brought to Jesus.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, children brought to an important rabbi.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: And Jesus had time for these people.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: It seemed like Jesus, no matter where he was going, he had time for people.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: You know, what is what does that look like in your life?
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: Have you become hurried in a way or busy in a way or self-absorbed in a way where where you say, okay, other people they can figure out those their own problems because I need to figure out mine first.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: Well, the reality is that that we'll never have all of our problems figured out.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: We'll never have enough time in the day to do all the things that we think we should do.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: And that God has placed people in our paths for a specific reason.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: And the beauty of the grace that that God offers us is that while we were lost, he came looking for us.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: We were we were guilty, and he was the one that saved us.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: We were far away, but Jesus Christ came near.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Jesus didn't love us because we were lovable or impressive or had anything to offer.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Jesus loved us because that's who he is.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Because that's who he is, and he loves all of his children.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: So perhaps today there's someone in your life that's walking through something.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's something that's more difficult than anything you've been through.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's something small, but uh God might be asking you to walk with that person, to take a step of obedience, to invite, to pray, to ask, to just lean in and care.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Just like the God of all creation sent his only son Jesus to care for us.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: God help us all to think about the way that we have been loved by you.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: God, may that motivate us to love and to care for the people that you've put in front of us today.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: It's in your name we pray.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: Thanks for joining us here today.
