- 2:16Speaker 2: Dan Reied, Isabelle is bo there who've been on the
- 2:19Speaker 2: show before?
- 2:20Speaker 6: Yeah man, yeah man.
- 2:21Speaker 2: One time.
- 2:22Speaker 6: Where are we talking video show or are we talking podcast?
- 2:26Speaker 2: You were on the podcast we recorded one time in
- 2:28Speaker 2: a tour bus. We recorded on a tour bus in Wyoming.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Does remember following we recorded, you guys came on the
- 2:38Speaker 2: show and we talked about the business. Among other things,
- 2:41Speaker 2: we talked about the business of country music. Because you
- 2:44Speaker 2: guys are both I don't know what the hell you
- 2:46Speaker 2: call your lunch contractual contracted professional songwriters.
- 2:51Speaker 5: I want to hear more about the Mississippi Cold Shoulder.
- 2:54Speaker 6: Well, when we got there, I think I told this then,
- 2:56Speaker 6: But when Steve came up, he's real tough and like
- 2:59Speaker 6: wasn't like, hey, how you doing to see.
- 3:00Speaker 7: Actually spoke through Yan. He was like, Yanny, tell these
- 3:03Speaker 7: guys that were about.
- 3:05Speaker 6: Steve, Steve Steve, and then he just jumped in the
- 3:09Speaker 6: truck drove off.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Because I was trying to get I was trying to
- 3:11Speaker 2: get some stuff.
- 3:12Speaker 6: Squared justified it on the other podcast.
- 3:14Speaker 2: I was trying to get some things squared away for
- 3:17Speaker 2: our our deal square his things squared up. Also joined
- 3:21Speaker 2: today by my wife Katie uh not Ranellae.
- 3:27Speaker 7: There we go, Katie Finch, who has that's the thing
- 3:31Speaker 7: we need to talk about that thing?
- 3:32Speaker 2: Oh no, I'd like to Yeah, great, I'd like to
- 3:35Speaker 2: put a tonnel work into God's Country podcast and Jordans.
- 3:43Speaker 2: She thought her name.
- 3:44Speaker 7: Was Isabelle un till earlier today, been married a couple
- 3:48Speaker 7: of years and with all due respect the m v
- 3:51Speaker 7: P m V of this podcast question.
- 3:56Speaker 3: A lot of therapy went into getting us to this point.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Uh, So we're gonna do our normal thing where we
- 4:01Speaker 2: get into all kinds of stuff, but go I'd like
- 4:02Speaker 2: you guys just do your own intros real quick too.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Just just talk a little bit about yourself that you
- 4:08Speaker 2: work up eighth mile from here. Yeah, we're saying that
- 4:11Speaker 2: you have an injured finger. I do.
- 4:13Speaker 4: Yeah, we're currently on music row.
- 4:16Speaker 7: I write at fifty Egg Music, which is I think
- 4:19Speaker 7: it's just this way. I don't know if that's north
- 4:22Speaker 7: or south or whatever, this way about eighth of a mile.
- 4:24Speaker 7: Then Dan's at Sony. He works at Sony down here,
- 4:27Speaker 7: probably eighth and mile that way.
- 4:28Speaker 2: So that's you guys work for competing outfits. Yeah, yeah,
- 4:32Speaker 2: you could say that.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, but you know, it's a it's.
- 4:37Speaker 6: It's a friendly competition though it's it's more like be
- 4:40Speaker 6: because they all kind of have to work together in
- 4:42Speaker 6: order to get songs in different places.
- 4:45Speaker 7: That makes sense, Yeah, okay, Yeah, it's competing outfits.
- 4:48Speaker 4: But at the same time, like we work together all the.
- 4:49Speaker 6: Time, like we write songs, and it's not weird to
- 4:52Speaker 6: write with other people's companies, got it, because you need
- 4:57Speaker 6: you need that different angle to get a song cut
- 5:01Speaker 6: as well. As like a different perspective.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Yeah, you just helped my my younger son work through
- 5:06Speaker 2: a couple of kinks of a song he was working
- 5:08Speaker 2: on called Twinkle Little.
- 5:10Speaker 7: Star beautiful rendition of Twin Little Star Twinkle they do
- 5:14Speaker 7: Twinkle Twinkle, which is that officially called twin.
- 5:19Speaker 6: He did great, he just needed a little, Uh, we'll
- 5:22Speaker 6: push something you need that.
- 5:24Speaker 2: You remember me getting the outfit you work for.
- 5:26Speaker 7: It's fifty egg music and they got that. They got
- 5:29Speaker 7: that sing from the movie cool Hand Luke.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Oh okay when he eats all those eggs.
- 5:32Speaker 7: Yeah, they said they can't eat fifty eggs, and he
- 5:34Speaker 7: eats them. But usually this is where this is Monday
- 5:38Speaker 7: that we're sitting here recording this. Usually this town, I mean,
- 5:41Speaker 7: the roads would be jammed up with cars and trucks
- 5:44Speaker 7: and all of these back parking lots writing songs, and
- 5:47Speaker 7: the the food how or the restaurants would be jam
- 5:51Speaker 7: up with people eating. But today there's probably what four
- 5:53Speaker 7: inches of snow on the ground, and I would venture
- 5:56Speaker 7: to say that we're one of the only ones doing
- 5:58Speaker 7: anything productive on the road today.
- 6:00Speaker 6: National is looking for a reason to not do nothing.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Yeah, well, part of the reason today would be They
- 6:04Speaker 2: asked you to not do nothing to greed. True.
- 6:06Speaker 4: Oh yeah, that's that's right.
- 6:07Speaker 2: It's like during the pandemic when you felt bad going
- 6:10Speaker 2: and doing stuff.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Those are good.
- 6:12Speaker 6: I didn't feel bad about that.
- 6:13Speaker 2: We had a thing where they said outdoor recreation is
- 6:15Speaker 2: a okay, but don't go anywhere. So it put you
- 6:20Speaker 2: in a mind like we would go five six hours
- 6:22Speaker 2: to outdoor recreate and it felt like, so am I
- 6:24Speaker 2: under the outdoor wreck or my under the not go anywhere?
- 6:27Speaker 6: Well, I think as long as you stay. I mean,
- 6:30Speaker 6: my own justification was as long as you stay, you know,
- 6:34Speaker 6: relatively spaced out. Are we talking about COVID again?
- 6:40Speaker 2: Four years that when you when you're when you're writing,
- 6:42Speaker 2: are you sitting in a couch like this? Yeah?
- 6:44Speaker 7: Man, yeah, Well in my place if i'm writing, I've
- 6:48Speaker 7: got to room up here.
- 6:49Speaker 6: Wait, you want a little skit one, a little skit
- 6:51Speaker 6: of how this goes?
- 6:52Speaker 2: Yeah, a couch?
- 6:54Speaker 6: Hey man, I heard Jake Owen was cutting. I had
- 6:56Speaker 6: a thing like this.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Oh cool.
- 6:57Speaker 4: I think he needs an up tempo.
- 6:58Speaker 6: He needs an up tempo.
- 6:59Speaker 4: Yeah, to see his different he's a positive. I think
- 7:02Speaker 4: he's a positive.
- 7:02Speaker 6: So he has different knowledge than I have, right, even
- 7:05Speaker 6: me saying, hey, good to see this morning.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Let's can you back it up a minute? Sure, how
- 7:09Speaker 2: did the conversation start?
- 7:11Speaker 6: What's up, dude?
- 7:11Speaker 2: What's up?
- 7:12Speaker 8: Thing?
- 7:12Speaker 6: I heard Jake Cowen's cutting? Uh yeah, I've heard.
- 7:14Speaker 4: I heard he needs like a positive up tempo.
- 7:16Speaker 6: Who told you that?
- 7:18Speaker 4: My publisher?
- 7:18Speaker 2: So someone's pretty assembling his album and they said you
- 7:21Speaker 2: need a positive up tempo.
- 7:23Speaker 4: Yeah, because he's got it. I've heard he's got a
- 7:25Speaker 4: sad song.
- 7:25Speaker 7: I've heard he's got a dad song, a couple of heartbreaks,
- 7:28Speaker 7: a couple of heartbreaks.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Wait, why is this funny to you? This is not
- 7:31Speaker 2: the construction of an album. No, No, like I like that.
- 7:33Speaker 2: There's this we're just using.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Like, Okay, j could probably use a positive Okay.
- 7:41Speaker 2: He's got a sad song, he's got a dad song,
- 7:43Speaker 2: he's got heartbreak songs. Yeah, so he needs a party.
- 7:45Speaker 6: So I'm not gonna go. Yeah, because I already know
- 7:53Speaker 6: he has it.
- 7:53Speaker 7: Chances of getting that thing and beating something he already
- 7:56Speaker 7: has is way less.
- 7:57Speaker 6: Than Okay, he needs a up tempo. We start there,
- 8:04Speaker 6: got any hooks? Uh?
- 8:05Speaker 4: Yeah? Man, I was fishing the other day and my
- 8:07Speaker 4: dad said this.
- 8:09Speaker 6: What did he say going up?
- 8:11Speaker 2: He said, fresh set of eyes will always find more beans.
- 8:14Speaker 4: He said, saying, f fun little beans.
- 8:18Speaker 6: It's a little old school. I don't know what.
- 8:20Speaker 2: It means, but we can figure it out any day.
- 8:26Speaker 4: So what don't we write a song that is.
- 8:31Speaker 6: Say yeah, Then we go, oh, you didn't say an
- 8:33Speaker 6: aron there? What's a cool aron? And we try to
- 8:35Speaker 6: make that fit because that's what based on the information
- 8:40Speaker 6: that he has and that I have, we know that
- 8:42Speaker 6: there's a space there. We're commercial riders. Not everything that
- 8:45Speaker 6: comes out of us has to be well. My great
- 8:49Speaker 6: granddaddy told me passed down the line this saying, sometimes
- 8:52Speaker 6: it's just, hey, what does this guy need? We're commercial riders.
- 8:56Speaker 6: We're hired in order to do to fill that need.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Right, do you have particular specialties within that, yes, Like,
- 9:04Speaker 2: how would you describe Well, I.
- 9:05Speaker 6: Mean it depends on different Different writers have different strengths, right,
- 9:09Speaker 6: So I think I mean.
- 9:11Speaker 7: It's a good example of us sitting right here right now.
- 9:13Speaker 7: Like I would consider myself a melody guy. I can
- 9:17Speaker 7: write a lyric, but I feel like melodies in my
- 9:22Speaker 7: head are my first go to. Like when Dan, if
- 9:24Speaker 7: Dan plays a song, I'm not gonna say what if
- 9:26Speaker 7: the first verse said this, I'm gonna go what if
- 9:28Speaker 7: it sounded like this?
- 9:29Speaker 4: And do the the ups.
- 9:32Speaker 7: And downs of a melody to a you know of
- 9:34Speaker 7: a verse melody and then which is completely different than
- 9:36Speaker 7: a chorus melody.
- 9:37Speaker 4: And that is my strength.
- 9:38Speaker 6: Dynamically speaking, right like you obviously obviously want your verse
- 9:45Speaker 6: melody to be somewhere in a in a range that
- 9:48Speaker 6: you can lift from in order to create emotion in
- 9:52Speaker 6: the course, create an emotional lift in the course.
- 9:54Speaker 4: But Dan is I would consider Dan. We can we can.
- 9:58Speaker 7: Both of us can do all the I feel like
- 10:00Speaker 7: can do, are really good at doing all the things.
- 10:01Speaker 7: But Dan's strongest specialty that you know, that you say
- 10:05Speaker 7: is a lyric, painting a picture, getting some getting a
- 10:08Speaker 7: listener to see what we're saying.
- 10:11Speaker 4: And Dan's, you know, really really good at that.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Yeah, well some good.
- 10:16Speaker 6: I'm good. I'm good all around.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Can you cover off real quick on your finger injury?
- 10:20Speaker 7: Yeah, so I smashed my left index that's an index
- 10:25Speaker 7: finger with a set of rattling horns.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Last week because you didn't cut the brawd times.
- 10:30Speaker 4: I didn't cut that, I didn't listen to my dad.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Daddy told her I cut the broad times off there day,
- 10:34Speaker 2: did you?
- 10:35Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 10:36Speaker 8: We Uh?
- 10:36Speaker 6: I was.
- 10:37Speaker 7: We were going down for a week rut hunt last
- 10:39Speaker 7: week and I found I got a pair of horns
- 10:43Speaker 7: and found him, got him, found him. Uh, found him
- 10:46Speaker 7: on our property. Actually, we can get into this a
- 10:49Speaker 7: little bit.
- 10:50Speaker 2: I was.
- 10:50Speaker 7: I was bow hunting, sitting in my stand and I
- 10:52Speaker 7: heard the wildest like grunt slash roar I've ever heard
- 10:57Speaker 7: in my life behind me and I'm sitting out there
- 10:59Speaker 7: in the world.
- 11:00Speaker 4: It's, you know, far away from anybody. So my first
- 11:02Speaker 4: thought it was what is that? It happened again?
- 11:06Speaker 7: Thought it was a bull hung in a fence, and
- 11:08Speaker 7: then a cow, yeah, like an actual cow like. And
- 11:11Speaker 7: then I heard it grunting like a buck like, and
- 11:15Speaker 7: this is We're getting close to the runt when this
- 11:17Speaker 7: was going down, So I was like, man, what is
- 11:18Speaker 7: going on? I called Dan a video to send him
- 11:20Speaker 7: a video. He's like, dude, you need to go check
- 11:22Speaker 7: that out. I went back there and got down out
- 11:25Speaker 7: of your tree, got down on my tree to go investigate,
- 11:28Speaker 7: and found a three year old buck that had the
- 11:32Speaker 7: back end of it chewed off by coyotes.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Why was he grunting because.
- 11:36Speaker 4: He was getting eat in a life like it was
- 11:38Speaker 4: it was a oh he was bellering.
- 11:39Speaker 7: It was a grunt. It was like a roar, like
- 11:41Speaker 7: a like a yeah, it was real. I'll show you
- 11:44Speaker 7: the video. Anyway, found that deer.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Was the coyotes still on him.
- 11:48Speaker 7: No, they ran off, tagged him, take him, took him in,
- 11:53Speaker 7: cut the backstraps out of him, and then cut his
- 11:55Speaker 7: horns off to make some rattling horns. Just so you know, Man,
- 11:58Speaker 7: so I didn't we and throwing, you know, just yeah joker, yeah,
- 12:04Speaker 7: huh so that was the pair of antlers I was using.
- 12:07Speaker 7: And yeah, before going down to the hunt, my dad
- 12:09Speaker 7: was like, hey, you better cut these brastones off.
- 12:11Speaker 2: So you said to that buck, You're like, you won't
- 12:13Speaker 2: be need knees anymore.
- 12:14Speaker 4: Dang right, you're gonna help me.
- 12:15Speaker 7: Ye went down to Mississippi, ended up not cutting the
- 12:21Speaker 7: brow toones off. Last morning, I go in for a
- 12:24Speaker 7: sequence and man, I smoked my finger and it's pretty
- 12:28Speaker 7: much if you if you took pliers and tried to
- 12:30Speaker 7: rip the side of your index finger off, that's pretty.
- 12:33Speaker 6: Much what happened.
- 12:34Speaker 4: Stitched it up, quick, stitch.
- 12:36Speaker 2: I'm chilling bro, when you say a sequence, what do
- 12:38Speaker 2: you mean? I mean, I don't know what you mean,
- 12:39Speaker 2: but do you have a philosophy?
- 12:41Speaker 6: Uh?
- 12:42Speaker 4: Not really, I think uh.
- 12:44Speaker 6: The initial you were talking about that?
- 12:46Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, sequence.
- 12:47Speaker 7: I mean I'm I'm not gonna sit there and bang
- 12:48Speaker 7: them all day, you know. When when it comes to
- 12:50Speaker 7: I just try to recreate a fight that I've heard
- 12:52Speaker 7: in the while before, and and that's usually a big
- 12:55Speaker 7: bang at the front, some rattling in between. What I
- 12:58Speaker 7: what I really am kind of intrigued at it is,
- 13:00Speaker 7: and I've heard people doing now is is taking two
- 13:03Speaker 7: or three sets of rolling horns, tying them to a rope,
- 13:06Speaker 7: dropping them on the ground from your stand. So when
- 13:08Speaker 7: you're rating your sinquts starts, you just start picking up
- 13:11Speaker 7: that rope and it's hitting the ground, making leaves move,
- 13:14Speaker 7: cracking limbs and stuff and making like noise ground level
- 13:19Speaker 7: with the deer and as well as like you've got
- 13:22Speaker 7: the leaf noise going on and stuff like that.
- 13:23Speaker 2: So that is when they come. You know, people say
- 13:27Speaker 2: the turkey, that turkey knows what tree you're sitting against. Absolutely,
- 13:30Speaker 2: you know what I mean. Yeah, I've always heard they come,
- 13:32Speaker 2: even when we were messing around recently with posturing decoys.
- 13:36Speaker 4: Yeah, buck decoys in which which way?
- 13:39Speaker 2: But when that buck comes in, he's like, got it.
- 13:42Speaker 2: I see the decoy, but I know that under that
- 13:45Speaker 2: tree there should be another deer. Yeah, I mean they're.
- 13:48Speaker 4: Like aware of boat for sure.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Yeah, they don't go like, oh, there it is. They're like, well,
- 13:52Speaker 2: there he is, But what about what I know should
- 13:54Speaker 2: be here?
- 13:55Speaker 7: I've always heard that that too. The turkey thing is like,
- 13:57Speaker 7: it doesn't matter how far turkey is. If you hit
- 14:00Speaker 7: to yelp, call or whatever, he could pinpoint within ten
- 14:03Speaker 7: yards of where you're sitting. And if he's enticed to
- 14:07Speaker 7: come check it out, he's gonna be better be ready
- 14:09Speaker 7: because he's coming. And same thing with a buck. I
- 14:11Speaker 7: mean you've rattled in deer before, is you know you better?
- 14:15Speaker 7: You better rattle and then set your horns down and
- 14:17Speaker 7: get ready because if a buck's if a buck hears
- 14:19Speaker 7: that and it triggers that innate fight to survive, I
- 14:23Speaker 7: got to get over there check it out. He's not
- 14:26Speaker 7: taking his time like he's he's gonna rumble in. And
- 14:28Speaker 7: that actually is what happened. When this happened, I hit
- 14:31Speaker 7: my finger and I wear cut off gloves when I'm
- 14:33Speaker 7: bow hunting, so my hands were frozen anyway. So when
- 14:36Speaker 7: I hit it, I knew it hurt. And I looked
- 14:37Speaker 7: down at it and it was just, I mean, there
- 14:39Speaker 7: was blood everywhere. So I start to wrap it up.
- 14:41Speaker 2: And I hear.
- 14:43Speaker 7: And I look up and luckily it wasn't a dear
- 14:45Speaker 7: that I was, you gonna shoot And a three year
- 14:48Speaker 7: old eight point ran in thirty yards from my tree
- 14:50Speaker 7: and just you know, went down window of me checking
- 14:53Speaker 7: it out and looking and didn't see anything.
- 14:55Speaker 6: Scared us. He said us a picture he was like,
- 14:57Speaker 6: got a blood trail and there was blood all over
- 14:59Speaker 6: the leaves and he hurt his finger up where it was.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Everybody was like yes.
- 15:02Speaker 4: I was like yes from I wish that was because everybody's.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Like, yeah, he got one, he shot one.
- 15:06Speaker 6: He was like, no, just busted his own ship.
- 15:08Speaker 2: There's a we hit it on a thing this year.
- 15:11Speaker 2: I'm not going to talk about rattling all hour here,
- 15:13Speaker 2: but we had another thing this year. Is when you know,
- 15:16Speaker 2: you know that buck, he's gonna know where that rattling
- 15:18Speaker 2: noise is coming from, and he's gonna come down wind
- 15:20Speaker 2: of it, right, and he's gonna come down wind of
- 15:22Speaker 2: it twenty or thirty yards, No doubt. We hit an
- 15:24Speaker 2: on a thing this year. The rattler, the rattling person
- 15:29Speaker 2: sets up and then you go fifty yards. Then the
- 15:35Speaker 2: archer goes fifty yards down wind of the rattler. That
- 15:38Speaker 2: way that bark bam comes running in right on top
- 15:42Speaker 2: of them, staring in the direction that thinks it is
- 15:44Speaker 2: never even would think to look further down wind. But
- 15:48Speaker 2: then one thing is I when I was hunting with
- 15:50Speaker 2: with Seth, you guys meet Seth if you mess uth,
- 15:52Speaker 2: Yeah we did. Yeah, I had to. I almost had
- 15:56Speaker 2: to decide if I was gonna risk piercing him with
- 15:59Speaker 2: the arrow. I mean, because that buck stopped and I'm like, man,
- 16:03Speaker 2: I hope he's in sess that he could see the
- 16:05Speaker 2: buck And he started trying to slip.
- 16:07Speaker 4: Down in the Did did come between them on the tree?
- 16:11Speaker 6: Oh?
- 16:11Speaker 2: No, big time? And I had to shoot earlier, and
- 16:13Speaker 2: I wanted to because I was watching him at what
- 16:16Speaker 2: point it was going to go through and get set
- 16:18Speaker 2: really and he said he could see it happen, and
- 16:20Speaker 2: he started trying to melt into the ground. Thinking about
- 16:22Speaker 2: what that think about?
- 16:23Speaker 6: This guy sounded real desperate to kill a deer here. Man.
- 16:25Speaker 7: Gee, that's a big that's a big turkey strategy is
- 16:28Speaker 7: the caller if a turkey's not coming in, if he's
- 16:31Speaker 7: hanging up at one hundred yards, and the call if
- 16:33Speaker 7: you're you know, a couple of guys sitting there, you
- 16:35Speaker 7: got a shoot her in a collar. The caller is gonna,
- 16:37Speaker 7: you know, a good strategy to drop back, to continue
- 16:39Speaker 7: to drop back like that hen is walking away, which
- 16:42Speaker 7: will entice that turkey come coming forward.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Uh, Jordan, you you so you tangle up the music
- 16:48Speaker 2: business too.
- 16:49Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 16:49Speaker 8: So I'm a marketing director for label group here in town,
- 16:53Speaker 8: based out of LA but I kind.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Of head up there Nashville.
- 16:56Speaker 2: But you can't say who.
- 16:57Speaker 3: Yeah, Virgin Music Group.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Oh yeah, so they're playing people.
- 17:02Speaker 8: Is we don't get a discount though at the hotels
- 17:05Speaker 8: for the curises.
- 17:05Speaker 2: But yeah, we passed one of their hotels right here here,
- 17:09Speaker 2: No discount, no discount. Take the eighth of a mile, yeah,
- 17:13Speaker 2: eight of them.
- 17:16Speaker 8: And so yeah, and then kind of helping these guys.
- 17:20Speaker 8: Our brains work very differently.
- 17:22Speaker 4: Helping is not wrangling is a leading.
- 17:25Speaker 6: I mean we just kind of show up and do it.
- 17:27Speaker 4: She says lassoing, Yeah, herding, Yeah, hurting.
- 17:30Speaker 8: Like this morning, for example, they were sitting at the
- 17:33Speaker 8: kitchen table.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Oh, don't just say were I was in the same house.
- 17:37Speaker 3: No, no, no, no, Dan came.
- 17:39Speaker 7: No, we do live ten minutes apart from each We
- 17:43Speaker 7: did live. We're eight from a mile.
- 17:46Speaker 8: But Dan came over this morning. Dan was holding one
- 17:49Speaker 8: of my babies. And but they are sitting at the
- 17:51Speaker 8: kitchen table talking about buying trucks, and the conversation just
- 17:56Speaker 8: will not end.
- 17:57Speaker 7: Well it was it was eight forty five, and Jordan
- 17:59Speaker 7: was like, we gotta be out of here at nine,
- 18:01Speaker 7: and I've got sweatpants on a T shirt.
- 18:03Speaker 3: She said, nine thirty fifteen, And I just I don't know.
- 18:08Speaker 8: I also think being late is like a son of rudeness,
- 18:10Speaker 8: and so I am always just like, okay, let's go whatever.
- 18:15Speaker 4: And she walked in with a baby. This is weird.
- 18:18Speaker 7: I was sitting down like this and my my feet
- 18:19Speaker 7: propped sweatpant, my feet propped up on a chair. Jordan
- 18:24Speaker 7: had a baby in her arms. I was drinking coffee.
- 18:26Speaker 7: You know, she's we gotta go.
- 18:28Speaker 2: You concrete boots on yet? Or I had that No,
- 18:30Speaker 2: not yet.
- 18:31Speaker 4: Not yet creep. These things are mean.
- 18:35Speaker 6: This is cold.
- 18:36Speaker 4: But Dan sitting there.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Jordan deadly too. If you lived in the North, you
- 18:40Speaker 2: know better, dude.
- 18:41Speaker 6: My feet are freezing.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Eat it too. On ice going, you'll have good working
- 18:47Speaker 2: on concrete. That's good.
- 18:49Speaker 7: Jordan walked in and goes hey, And this is how,
- 18:52Speaker 7: this is why she works with me and Dan and
- 18:54Speaker 7: she she walks in and goes, hey, I love you guys.
- 18:58Speaker 4: I think you guys are great.
- 18:59Speaker 7: She was like, yeah, to go, like, quit talking about
- 19:02Speaker 7: buying a truck and go put some pants in your
- 19:04Speaker 7: in your concrete boots.
- 19:05Speaker 3: And they were both like, Okay, what have we gotta do?
- 19:07Speaker 8: And I was like, snow needs to get off the truck, Dan,
- 19:09Speaker 8: truck read shower, do something and but yeah, so I
- 19:17Speaker 8: guess in wrangling these you.
- 19:18Speaker 3: Hoo's, it's been fun great.
- 19:20Speaker 2: And then Katie, I.
- 19:22Speaker 5: Noticed your little about Jordan's common about being late. Yeah, yeah,
- 19:30Speaker 5: that is one of the main things that Steve and
- 19:32Speaker 5: I argue about it.
- 19:34Speaker 3: So are you always on Tom or.
- 19:36Speaker 2: I'm a mint man, dude? You know what a minute
- 19:39Speaker 2: mann with the American Revolution.
- 19:41Speaker 5: Yeah, we our kids were talking. They all try to
- 19:45Speaker 5: be minimum. Our youngest is the only one who.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Oh dude, he's fast.
- 19:53Speaker 5: He is always ready for school on time. Anyway you
- 19:57Speaker 5: asked me, I'm I am your wife, and I work
- 20:02Speaker 5: at meat Eater, do a variety of things and have
- 20:04Speaker 5: the amazing fortune of getting to work with you guys
- 20:09Speaker 5: on this podcast. So excited.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Do you just know we met through publishing? I didn't
- 20:14Speaker 2: know that I did. And then Dan go ahead, Uh,
- 20:19Speaker 2: what talk about? We talk about your line of work.
- 20:21Speaker 6: Oh, it's the same as rates. We do the same thing.
- 20:24Speaker 6: We already covered that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, same thing. Great.
- 20:27Speaker 2: So we're gonna we're gonna do a couple things that
- 20:28Speaker 2: we're gonna get into. We're gonna get into the God's
- 20:30Speaker 2: Country Podcast. No, you guys are not familiar. You're familiar
- 20:32Speaker 2: now with my saying that I invented a freshet of
- 20:35Speaker 2: eyes will always find more beans. I'll clarify where it
- 20:38Speaker 2: came from. It came from when you'd send people to
- 20:40Speaker 2: pick pole beans, as one does, they'll come and say,
- 20:45Speaker 2: well I got them all. I'm like, and then I'll
- 20:48Speaker 2: go out and there be more anybody, anybody.
- 20:51Speaker 5: This is a very specific saying to our children, though
- 20:53Speaker 5: I think it just applies.
- 20:56Speaker 6: I'm really curious as to how you're applying this to
- 20:58Speaker 6: your children though.
- 20:59Speaker 5: No, it's like so like literally sending them outside to
- 21:03Speaker 5: get pole beans.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, what are you? What kind of you guys?
- 21:07Speaker 2: Do bush beans or pole beans down here?
- 21:09Speaker 6: What are we talking about it?
- 21:12Speaker 2: Gardening?
- 21:12Speaker 6: No? I don't. I don't.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Okay, either way, I observed it like no matter who
- 21:17Speaker 2: you how many people you send out, they'll you send
- 21:20Speaker 2: them out. Like pick up pole beans is hard because
- 21:21Speaker 2: they camouflage inside the trestle, O L E. Pole. Well,
- 21:29Speaker 2: there's two. You have two varieties. So you have bush
- 21:31Speaker 2: beans which have snap beans and great, but they they
- 21:35Speaker 2: can be either or Okay, just just for clarity's sake. Uh,
- 21:39Speaker 2: bush beans are already generally they're determinate, meaning they're already
- 21:45Speaker 2: all at once, right, so for canning and stuff they're great.
- 21:49Speaker 2: Then you can have indeterminate pole varieties, which is produce
- 21:53Speaker 2: over a long period time. You will send as I've
- 21:56Speaker 2: had to explains a bunch of times, you'll send someone out.
- 21:58Speaker 2: You'll be like, hey, kids, go pick all the beans
- 22:01Speaker 2: for dinner, and they'll come back, but we got them all.
- 22:04Speaker 2: And then I'll go out and they didn't get them
- 22:05Speaker 2: all there's more. So didn't you invent the saying or
- 22:08Speaker 2: was this a past?
- 22:09Speaker 8: No?
- 22:09Speaker 2: I invented the saying A new old say, a new
- 22:12Speaker 2: old saying, which means it means like a like. You
- 22:15Speaker 2: can apply it to glassing, for instance, like no I
- 22:18Speaker 2: glass that hillside out, there's no deer there. And then
- 22:21Speaker 2: he's like the fresh at eyes, fresh set eyes. So
- 22:25Speaker 2: we've got a lot of variations on this.
- 22:27Speaker 6: I have a conflict with that statement working on.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Song titles, and a guy said that he tried it
- 22:32Speaker 2: on his wife the other night. She was looking in
- 22:37Speaker 2: the she was looking in the pantry for vanilla extract.
- 22:42Speaker 2: She couldn't find it, and he said, well, I'll come
- 22:44Speaker 2: in and take a look, and she said, what good
- 22:46Speaker 2: would that do? I'm already looking. He'd been wanting to
- 22:49Speaker 2: use the expression. His wife's name is Kate. He wanted
- 22:54Speaker 2: to use the expression, so he said it, and then
- 22:59Speaker 2: in rep why, she called him the one word that
- 23:02Speaker 2: no one has ever said on this podcast, see you
- 23:07Speaker 2: next Tuesday, which made me think, what kind of wife's
- 23:11Speaker 2: he got? What happened right there? What just happened doesn't matter.
- 23:16Speaker 4: See you next Tuesday is way more than one word.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what he got called for applying to saying, now,
- 23:21Speaker 2: we've been covering serious situations with TSA agents stealing your
- 23:25Speaker 2: pocket knives, and we had a guy. We haven't been
- 23:28Speaker 2: disclosing where any of these TSA agents are located because
- 23:31Speaker 2: we want to get in trouble. But there's a TSA
- 23:33Speaker 2: agent who tells people to go put it in the
- 23:35Speaker 2: bathroom drop ceiling, and a guy goes to later get
- 23:40Speaker 2: his knife, and he says that he finds multiple names,
- 23:44Speaker 2: three other knives in the drop ceiling. Another TSA agent
- 23:48Speaker 2: wrote in. He says, I worked for the TSA, and
- 23:51Speaker 2: there have been many times that someone was caught while
- 23:53Speaker 2: attempting to stash a knife in the ceiling tiles of
- 23:55Speaker 2: a bathroom. They're usually caught by another passenger, who reports
- 24:00Speaker 2: them to either TSA or the police at the airport.
- 24:04Speaker 2: My suggestion this is coming from a TSA agent, which
- 24:07Speaker 2: is what I've personally done. Put your knife inside of
- 24:10Speaker 2: a planter, you're less It's less suspicious to see someone
- 24:16Speaker 2: fiddling with a planter than someone in the bathroom fiddling
- 24:21Speaker 2: with the drop tiles.
- 24:22Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree.
- 24:25Speaker 2: A guy wrote in about hunting strategies, you guys might
- 24:28Speaker 2: be interested in this. He's talking about trying to kill
- 24:30Speaker 2: town deer. Yeah, okay, he's observing when you're hunting town deer,
- 24:34Speaker 2: and I've seen this. You're hunting town deer that are
- 24:36Speaker 2: town Turkey's town deer. They're totally used to people. But
- 24:39Speaker 2: the minute you go to hunt them, they know you're
- 24:41Speaker 2: hunting them. He's saying, the reason that's happening is because
- 24:44Speaker 2: you're acting different. You're dressing different, acting different. When he's
- 24:49Speaker 2: hunting town deer, he acts like he's going to do
- 24:53Speaker 2: a normal town thing, like go to the grocery, you
- 24:57Speaker 2: put on normal clothes and don't go toward the deer.
- 24:59Speaker 2: You tour to shed, Yeah, you don't go. You go
- 25:04Speaker 2: like you're going tour to car crank a four wheeler
- 25:07Speaker 2: out there. And he talks on his phone.
- 25:11Speaker 5: And then he turns around and WAPs him.
- 25:12Speaker 2: And he said it's so easy that he's gotten sick
- 25:14Speaker 2: of it.
- 25:16Speaker 4: So he's been successful with this.
- 25:18Speaker 5: You sound angry about that.
- 25:20Speaker 6: I'm a little angry about this.
- 25:21Speaker 2: Well, he's like, Hey, I'll act if I'm trying to
- 25:23Speaker 2: get a town deer. I'll act like I'm doing messive
- 25:25Speaker 2: with my garbage. Because the minute you like get all
- 25:28Speaker 2: your gear on and act weird and try sneaking up
- 25:31Speaker 2: on it, it's like, what the the deer's like, hell's
- 25:33Speaker 2: going out with this guy and he takes off.
- 25:35Speaker 4: He's hunting me.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Yeah, he's like he doesn't like it. Yeah, so he said,
- 25:39Speaker 2: just like you have it, be chill, do normal stuff.
- 25:43Speaker 2: He like said, it works so good, this works so well.
- 25:46Speaker 2: It ruined the whole experience.
- 25:53Speaker 6: Oh beautiful.
- 25:53Speaker 2: He's got a friend.
- 25:54Speaker 4: This guy, go find some public land.
- 25:56Speaker 2: He's got a friend. He says that hunt likes to
- 25:58Speaker 2: hunt deer. He's mechanic and he hunts deer by the garage.
- 26:03Speaker 2: He hunts in his mechanic clothes by the garage. And
- 26:08Speaker 2: he said that he thinks it's the perfect all that
- 26:10Speaker 2: grease is a good cover center.
- 26:12Speaker 6: I just absolutely demolishes, like all the standards and bars
- 26:17Speaker 6: that we were brought up on as far as like
- 26:19Speaker 6: respecting everything and do it.
- 26:21Speaker 2: You know what I mean.
- 26:22Speaker 6: It's just like, hey, man, just set up by the
- 26:24Speaker 6: garage and your work suit, shoot some ship.
- 26:26Speaker 5: So you don't think you should do it.
- 26:28Speaker 6: I'm not saying I don't think you should do it.
- 26:29Speaker 6: I would absolutely do it. I just think it. It
- 26:34Speaker 6: just doesn't feel as good to make.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Some weird you know what it is. It's it's it's well,
- 26:41Speaker 2: go on, I'm good.
- 26:43Speaker 6: I'm good.
- 26:43Speaker 2: I used to so when I used to get on
- 26:46Speaker 2: a plane and there was people in first class, I
- 26:48Speaker 2: wanted to cut all their throats.
- 26:50Speaker 6: I knew they were.
- 26:55Speaker 2: On board, rich bastards. Came by it dishonesty, you know
- 26:59Speaker 2: what I mean. Later you get then later you get
- 27:02Speaker 2: where you start getting later, I know, but now now
- 27:06Speaker 2: you know, Now I get out there, and I'm like, man,
- 27:08Speaker 2: a bunch of hard working people, you know, a lot
- 27:11Speaker 2: of sacrifices, a lot of sacrifices they made to be
- 27:14Speaker 2: in this situation up here. You guys order Champagne to
- 27:18Speaker 2: talk about down on people, the hunted town stuff. But
- 27:24Speaker 2: now I have a yard that has a lot of
- 27:26Speaker 2: town stuff in it, and I'm always plotting and devising
- 27:31Speaker 2: how I would go about it. And the one neighbor
- 27:34Speaker 2: I have right next to me is out in a
- 27:36Speaker 2: different zone, a different municipality, administrative zone, and I'm envious.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Even though you know, one of the commandments is don't
- 27:44Speaker 2: covert that neighbor's property. I coveted his property because he
- 27:48Speaker 2: would be at will to hunt the town stuff. So
- 27:51Speaker 2: I'm saying I wouldn't look down on it. Now, I'm
- 27:53Speaker 2: an aspirational town hunter, meaning it's just your situation varies.
- 27:57Speaker 8: I mean, yeah, so you wouldn't you look the country
- 28:00Speaker 8: correct back porch, a giant deer walks out across your backfield.
- 28:05Speaker 6: Depends on how the years go, okay and what season.
- 28:08Speaker 8: End of season, you haven't killed a buck yet, not
- 28:11Speaker 8: see ya, you would shoot it.
- 28:13Speaker 2: We recently looked at a property that's basically touching our property,
- 28:17Speaker 2: and my only motivation looking at that property is that
- 28:21Speaker 2: you were to have excellent town hunting.
- 28:24Speaker 3: When you say townhunting, like, are you guys like in talking.
- 28:26Speaker 2: About hunting habituated animals. Yeah, that was not.
- 28:31Speaker 5: My motivation for looking at.
- 28:33Speaker 2: That the truth, I'll still do normal stuff, but I
- 28:39Speaker 2: was like, my like, this would give you a chance
- 28:41Speaker 2: at town bears.
- 28:42Speaker 6: I'm saying there's a different for me personally now, what
- 28:46Speaker 6: I mean, honestly, ignorance is bliss too, right. If you
- 28:48Speaker 6: didn't have the foundation I guess that we were brought
- 28:51Speaker 6: up on, it probably wouldn't matter to me. I'm old
- 28:56Speaker 6: now and there there is more to it for me
- 29:01Speaker 6: than the animal. And I'm not trying to put myself
- 29:03Speaker 6: on some purist pedestal here. I'm just saying it. It
- 29:09Speaker 6: just I don't know that it would that it would
- 29:11Speaker 6: bring the same satisfaction as because.
- 29:14Speaker 5: You didn't feel like it.
- 29:16Speaker 8: So there's a guy here in town. No, no, no,
- 29:19Speaker 8: you and you guys probably know the story. But he
- 29:23Speaker 8: was dating this girl who lived within city limits.
- 29:25Speaker 2: Oh, you're doing it, you're doing she is doing it.
- 29:30Speaker 3: I'm not going to say names. I'm not going to
- 29:32Speaker 3: say names.
- 29:34Speaker 8: The girl lives in East Nashville, very well known for
- 29:37Speaker 8: having like town deer over there.
- 29:39Speaker 2: Oh no, she's at a location.
- 29:42Speaker 4: Big deer, and we're getting close.
- 29:45Speaker 8: We're going to judge you if you shoot him, because
- 29:46Speaker 8: you shouldn't shoot town deer.
- 29:48Speaker 3: Anyway.
- 29:48Speaker 8: This guy is dating this girl. He and he had
- 29:52Speaker 8: been watching this deer come up on her property. They
- 29:55Speaker 8: ended up breaking up, and I don't really know what
- 29:59Speaker 8: I think. They were kind of like talking still, and
- 30:01Speaker 8: as a talking she sent him a picture of this
- 30:05Speaker 8: giant buck in her backyard. Conveniently, they got back together
- 30:09Speaker 8: and he shot it and then posted a picture on
- 30:11Speaker 8: the internet.
- 30:11Speaker 3: In his camera, like he shot it out and then
- 30:14Speaker 3: he broke up with her the next day.
- 30:15Speaker 9: Mom, like with that, Wow, but it's kind of funny
- 30:21Speaker 9: you say that, Like he shot it off the back
- 30:22Speaker 9: porch and his normal clothes, went inside, put his camera on,
- 30:25Speaker 9: and then went outside and took the picture.
- 30:27Speaker 5: With the deer.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Well that that happened.
- 30:32Speaker 3: One degree removed.
- 30:33Speaker 2: But I like to be a very well rounded outdoorsman, Okay,
- 30:38Speaker 2: Like I hunt a trap, I fish, I hunted some
- 30:41Speaker 2: of the most I hunted some of the most remote
- 30:43Speaker 2: places you can get to. And as the well roundedness,
- 30:46Speaker 2: I would also like to build a hunt in some
- 30:48Speaker 2: of the least remote places you get to, just to
- 30:50Speaker 2: have that full breadth of experience. And I don't think,
- 30:53Speaker 2: I don't think you're going to damage the resource. Which
- 30:55Speaker 2: leads me to another thing that someone wrote in about
- 30:57Speaker 2: where a guy wrote in looking for some moral help.
- 30:59Speaker 2: He has a twenty acre plot twenty acre track a
- 31:02Speaker 2: land in western Virginia. Used to be a big cattle operation,
- 31:07Speaker 2: but it got all as things do, got all busted
- 31:10Speaker 2: up in the little pieces, one of which he purchases
- 31:13Speaker 2: load of a deer in turkeys. Here's the thing he's
- 31:16Speaker 2: in a situation where in terms of the state regulations,
- 31:21Speaker 2: he's totally fine to hunt, but there's this dumb property
- 31:26Speaker 2: owners association prohibition on hunting, and he's looking for some
- 31:30Speaker 2: moral guidance and what you should do. I just I
- 31:35Speaker 2: I never knew. I didn't really understand what those things were.
- 31:38Speaker 2: I bought a house that's in one of those things,
- 31:40Speaker 2: and I would never make that mistake again. I would
- 31:43Speaker 2: not pay any attention to that.
- 31:45Speaker 7: No, I'm either and I live in one as well,
- 31:47Speaker 7: like like we live outside of the city, but it is.
- 31:50Speaker 7: It is in a community, and there is an HOA
- 31:54Speaker 7: system in place, and they will send you letters if
- 31:58Speaker 7: your grass is not cut at a certain height, or
- 32:01Speaker 7: if you've got limbs in the backyard, which I just
- 32:04Speaker 7: kept on moving them, yeah, and just made them move
- 32:08Speaker 7: them in a different spot. But yeah, I'm the same
- 32:10Speaker 7: way man, I think, and I always say this too,
- 32:12Speaker 7: like until that association is paying the taxes on my property,
- 32:16Speaker 7: I'll do what I want to do on my property.
- 32:19Speaker 2: I have all phenomenal neighbors, same, yeah, but I know
- 32:22Speaker 2: I don't I would rather all my neighbors were horders not.
- 32:26Speaker 2: I mean, I don't want to trade my neighbors in
- 32:27Speaker 2: I would like to have my wonderful neighbors that I have,
- 32:29Speaker 2: but that but that they were hoarders and junk collectors, Okay,
- 32:34Speaker 2: meaning when you need something like I have in my
- 32:37Speaker 2: place in Alaska, I had a horder junk collector neighbor.
- 32:40Speaker 2: Anytime you needed anything, just.
- 32:41Speaker 4: Walk over there.
- 32:42Speaker 2: You go over there and need to have it.
- 32:43Speaker 4: Yeah, you don't have to keep up with it, so
- 32:44Speaker 4: you need like and didn't even know.
- 32:45Speaker 2: He has some metal yay long? Right whatever you know
- 32:48Speaker 2: he's going to have that huncle metal yay long. It's
- 32:52Speaker 2: just there's the They have all kinds of rabbits, like
- 32:55Speaker 2: junk piles. Yeah, it just be. And then my place
- 32:57Speaker 2: looks awesome.
- 32:58Speaker 4: Sure not happening in an Hoa.
- 33:00Speaker 2: Looks way better than everybody else's.
- 33:02Speaker 5: We've never gotten any like criticism from the Hoa, except
- 33:07Speaker 5: not like grass anything we've done to the house. Just
- 33:10Speaker 5: our camper trailer. Yeah, staying outside for too long?
- 33:14Speaker 4: How'd that make you feel? And when you when you
- 33:17Speaker 4: opened that letter and read that.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Didn't come in a letter for him?
- 33:20Speaker 5: Right? Was it right after your hunt with Luke?
- 33:24Speaker 2: No, it was during the big flood that we.
- 33:28Speaker 5: Had just gotten a notice about our camper trailer and
- 33:33Speaker 5: our HOA was upset about it. And I pulled in
- 33:36Speaker 5: from work one day and there was probably twenty cars,
- 33:41Speaker 5: our trailer and a tour bus generators run or like today,
- 33:49Speaker 5: and I was like, well, they were upset before.
- 33:52Speaker 2: Ye a Minnesota trapper. This was reported in I believe
- 34:07Speaker 2: this is a report in Minnesota public radio. A Minnesota
- 34:11Speaker 2: trapper had a Bobcat set out. This, Oh, this is
- 34:14Speaker 2: not this is This story makes trappers look pretty good.
- 34:19Speaker 2: A Minnesota trapper has a Bobcat set out, and he's
- 34:22Speaker 2: in the area where you can't trap pine Martins, and
- 34:24Speaker 2: he catches a Pine Martin in his Bobcat set and
- 34:26Speaker 2: he thinks it's deceased. Calls a warden because that's what
- 34:33Speaker 2: he needs. He needs a self report. This guy's an
- 34:35Speaker 2: exemplary figure because a lot of guys would have been
- 34:38Speaker 2: like that didn't happen, right, and just go about your business.
- 34:40Speaker 2: But he calls a warden to say, I had an
- 34:43Speaker 2: incidental catch. I think I killed this Pine Martin. The
- 34:46Speaker 2: warden says on the call, the trapper then says, op,
- 34:49Speaker 2: it's eyes just moved and hangs up on the warden.
- 34:55Speaker 2: He then manages to give CPR. The warden backed him
- 35:01Speaker 2: up on this, gives him CPR, resuscitates the martin, uh warm,
- 35:16Speaker 2: puts it in his vehicle. What moves the martin into
- 35:22Speaker 2: his vehicle to warm it up? No, he put his
- 35:25Speaker 2: He put his mouth over its nostrils and put air
- 35:28Speaker 2: into it.
- 35:29Speaker 4: I'm with it.
- 35:32Speaker 2: Rushes to the scene Belle Tramy County. The guy gets
- 35:38Speaker 2: it all warmed up in his all trained vehicle. They
- 35:40Speaker 2: don't say what kind. The warden rushes to the scene.
- 35:45Speaker 2: They get it revived to the point that it becomes
- 35:47Speaker 2: very angry.
- 35:51Speaker 7: Confining, confined within the ATV, and they released it.
- 35:56Speaker 5: It's impressive that he he pulled out the CPR, and
- 36:00Speaker 5: you how to do it.
- 36:00Speaker 2: Not only that, the warden reviewed video taken by the
- 36:04Speaker 2: trapper's wife that confirmed the sequence of events. The warden
- 36:11Speaker 2: was so moved he included it in his weekly report
- 36:14Speaker 2: of Notable activity activities. The trapper, I wish Kren was here,
- 36:22Speaker 2: supposedly does not want to be interviewed.
- 36:27Speaker 5: If anybody could could make that happen, it would be crinal.
- 36:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:33Speaker 8: I always think I'm readneck and then I hear stories
- 36:35Speaker 8: like that, and I'm like, you know, what.
- 36:37Speaker 4: What a story.
- 36:37Speaker 6: Why don't your parents have coons or something?
- 36:39Speaker 3: Oh yeah, my dad and stepmom raised raccoons in our house.
- 36:42Speaker 7: There's literally pictures of her dad holding a raccoon feeding
- 36:45Speaker 7: him a twinkie.
- 36:46Speaker 8: Yeah, like on the cow and they would like have
- 36:47Speaker 8: to burp the raccoons and then like a baby.
- 36:50Speaker 3: Okay, it's a whole thing.
- 36:51Speaker 2: Just kept them when I was little. My kids are
- 36:53Speaker 2: dying for one to spring the raccoon.
- 36:55Speaker 8: They fell out of a tree and they were Huey,
- 36:57Speaker 8: Dewey and Louie I think, and they would come they
- 37:00Speaker 8: would open the door not and come in and eat cheetohs.
- 37:02Speaker 4: That's pretty red neck.
- 37:03Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, I guess I am the mouth to.
- 37:06Speaker 4: What a story of the Pine Martin?
- 37:08Speaker 2: Let me ask you about that. I was going to
- 37:10Speaker 2: move on to another news story. Go on.
- 37:11Speaker 6: Sorry, Is that is that like, because obviously we don't
- 37:13Speaker 6: have pine Martins down here? Is that like a kind
- 37:16Speaker 6: of a revered animal there is this just like like
- 37:18Speaker 6: would it be.
- 37:19Speaker 2: Like No, it's more it's more heroic than reviving a possum.
- 37:24Speaker 2: So we trap Martins where we're at and it's an
- 37:32Speaker 2: American Martin people call them Pine Martin. Have you ever
- 37:35Speaker 2: heard of sable like a sable coat or a sable brush.
- 37:39Speaker 2: So Martins are sold as sable and it's a very
- 37:44Speaker 2: high end, luxuriant fur. And they used to make a
- 37:47Speaker 2: brush with the with the hair of a Martin. And now,
- 37:50Speaker 2: like I was saying, if you were an oligarch's wife
- 37:55Speaker 2: pre Ukraine invasion, if you were an oligarch's wife, what
- 37:59Speaker 2: you wanted was a sable coat lined with bobcat which
- 38:03Speaker 2: really brings this guy's worlds together.
- 38:05Speaker 6: It was like a season for Pine Martin and it
- 38:08Speaker 6: wasn't in season.
- 38:08Speaker 2: The season for Pine Martin runs, well, I don't know
- 38:11Speaker 2: in his area. He might be in a unit. So
- 38:13Speaker 2: there are Minnesota units you can trap Martin. He might
- 38:16Speaker 2: have been out of unit. But our season runs from
- 38:19Speaker 2: uh December one to February fifteenth for Martin trapping. And
- 38:23Speaker 2: they're regulated as a fur bear. They're a mustal lid,
- 38:26Speaker 2: they're a weasel, remember the weasel family. They're regulated as
- 38:29Speaker 2: a fur bear. And you'll have all kinds of quotas
- 38:31Speaker 2: in place and stuff like that. But right now the
- 38:33Speaker 2: unit I'm in is open quota. December one to February fifteenth.
- 38:37Speaker 2: So is that why there were there were worth like
- 38:39Speaker 2: forty fifty bucks? So is that why he had to
- 38:41Speaker 2: report it because it was out of season?
- 38:44Speaker 5: Was that what you were going for when we had
- 38:46Speaker 5: the snowmobile?
- 38:47Speaker 2: Yeah, Martin trapping when we had our snowbill crash.
- 38:50Speaker 5: Okay, so I have the best photo ever. I'm going
- 38:52Speaker 5: to find it for you.
- 38:54Speaker 2: We had a miss I took her trapping.
- 38:57Speaker 4: We had a misma.
- 38:58Speaker 5: It was not a miscommunication.
- 38:59Speaker 2: Here's the I said.
- 39:00Speaker 5: It was like, I have I have a great date day,
- 39:03Speaker 5: date day, date.
- 39:04Speaker 2: Day got her with the d so I had her drive.
- 39:08Speaker 2: She's like, I don't want to be driving on some
- 39:09Speaker 2: steep ass.
- 39:10Speaker 5: Trail and I was like, the one thing I'm worried
- 39:13Speaker 5: about is driving off the side of a mountain and
- 39:16Speaker 5: flipping over ballot.
- 39:19Speaker 2: So I say you should drive the snow mill and
- 39:22Speaker 2: learn how to drive on the flats. Tough to drive.
- 39:26Speaker 2: Drove it and then wasn't crazy about driving it. And
- 39:29Speaker 2: then I jump off to check some sets.
- 39:31Speaker 5: Just they just happened to be where.
- 39:33Speaker 2: I leave it. I leave it.
- 39:36Speaker 5: I can I'm supposed to do a date day, but
- 39:38Speaker 5: I have to go to check my.
- 39:41Speaker 2: Some sets, and I go down the mountain. She my
- 39:45Speaker 2: snowmobil has footwarmers. You jam your feet up into these
- 39:49Speaker 2: feet warmers. She moves up to try to warm her
- 39:51Speaker 2: feet on it. So when I come back up the mountain,
- 39:54Speaker 2: she's perched up there in the driver state. Yeah, in
- 39:58Speaker 2: the driver's Yeah, I thought she was up there because
- 40:01Speaker 2: she's itching to drive again. But she was up there
- 40:03Speaker 2: trying to warm her feet. But size just whatever. I
- 40:08Speaker 2: jump on the back and she's like, well, I guess
- 40:09Speaker 2: I'm driving again. And I had already broken trail through
- 40:12Speaker 2: this area. So then we are on the steep stuff
- 40:14Speaker 2: she doesn't want to drive on, and her skis get
- 40:17Speaker 2: a little out of the ruts. This is the day
- 40:19Speaker 2: Ken Block died on a snowbill always be find the day,
- 40:23Speaker 2: same day. So she gets the ruts out of the
- 40:28Speaker 2: skis out of the track. I reach forward to grab
- 40:32Speaker 2: the bar and pull it back on, but inadvertently punch
- 40:35Speaker 2: the accelerator.
- 40:38Speaker 6: That's what's.
- 40:42Speaker 2: A whiskey throttle. It off Off the mountain we go,
- 40:46Speaker 2: and I think, man, this is gonna hurt when this
- 40:48Speaker 2: thing starts rolling over us bunch of times, so I
- 40:51Speaker 2: kind of bear hugger and get like tucked in expecting
- 40:55Speaker 2: the machine was but the powder was so deep it
- 40:59Speaker 2: just burrowed in and I was like, man, this is bad.
- 41:03Speaker 2: But we had there's two trees in the vicinity. I
- 41:05Speaker 2: had one tree to get it back. I got a
- 41:07Speaker 2: rope polar on one tree and got it upright, got
- 41:11Speaker 2: a rope pullar on another tree and got it back
- 41:14Speaker 2: on the road. And we were lucky in underway Jordan, Uh,
- 41:19Speaker 2: that's the pinet.
- 41:20Speaker 6: I don't know if I can put my mouth on that.
- 41:23Speaker 4: That's a pine Martin.
- 41:24Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm not.
- 41:25Speaker 3: Putting my mouth And God didn't mouth the mouth on that.
- 41:28Speaker 7: That thing would eat your tongue out.
- 41:32Speaker 2: So recorded in the Okay, here's here's here's the here's
- 41:36Speaker 2: here's here's a distressing story kind of. So a group
- 41:40Speaker 2: by now in Canada how to work like in Canada
- 41:44Speaker 2: big Game the British Columbia big game guides will have
- 41:46Speaker 2: I've hunted a BC on one of these. A big
- 41:48Speaker 2: game outfitter in Canada will have like what they call
- 41:52Speaker 2: on Crown Land, they'll own the concession. Okay, so big
- 41:56Speaker 2: game outfitter the public can hunt a certain area, but
- 41:59Speaker 2: only one an outfitter can guide an area and that's
- 42:01Speaker 2: what you own. There's an animal rights group in the
- 42:04Speaker 2: Great Bare Rainforest of BC which is buying up the concessions,
- 42:13Speaker 2: doing everything normal, and it's a bid process. So there
- 42:16Speaker 2: it's like willing seller willing buyer. They're doing the bid process,
- 42:19Speaker 2: doing all the necessary paperwork.
- 42:21Speaker 6: But that would essentially be like here where they do
- 42:25Speaker 6: duck draws. They draw for blind right, what they're called
- 42:30Speaker 6: pits and stuff, and so what they do here is
- 42:34Speaker 6: is essentially it would be them entering these duck sure things,
- 42:39Speaker 6: getting the rights to it, and then just not hunting
- 42:41Speaker 6: it essentially.
- 42:42Speaker 7: But with a duck thing you have people out. There's
- 42:44Speaker 7: a possibility that you can't. This is money.
- 42:46Speaker 6: This is no this this money too. People buy pits
- 42:49Speaker 6: from people who draw them all the time. Oh oh okay,
- 42:53Speaker 6: maybe illegally, but they definitely do it.
- 42:54Speaker 4: Okay, I see what you're saying.
- 42:55Speaker 2: This is similar to a move that's been happening in
- 42:58Speaker 2: other areas where uh So, a couple of years ago
- 43:04Speaker 2: when the US Fish and Wildlife Service moved to delist
- 43:07Speaker 2: grizzly bears and the grizzly bears in the Greater Yellstone ecosystem.
- 43:10Speaker 2: We're going to go under state management some of the states.
- 43:14Speaker 2: Montana sat it out, Wyoming said that we're going to
- 43:16Speaker 2: issue twenty tags for hunting. Idaho was going to do
- 43:21Speaker 2: a sort of they were gonna do one sort of
- 43:25Speaker 2: a symbolic one tag, and there was a big movement
- 43:28Speaker 2: for if this went through, it was gonna be that
- 43:33Speaker 2: the whole they were trying to get people just to
- 43:35Speaker 2: swamp the application system and hopes that that anti hunters
- 43:40Speaker 2: would draw the tags and just sit on them. Right.
- 43:43Speaker 2: So this is like a play that you'll see that
- 43:46Speaker 2: is happening more and more and more and more. Let
- 43:47Speaker 2: me ask you about this.
- 43:49Speaker 6: Do you feel how how do you feel like if
- 43:52Speaker 6: there's a versus the revenue of hunters versus the revenue
- 43:56Speaker 6: of non hunting, where does that How does that sit?
- 44:00Speaker 2: You know? I think where you see it play out
- 44:02Speaker 2: in a really effective ways you where you have a
- 44:06Speaker 2: legitimate juxtaposition would be as explained to me, it would
- 44:10Speaker 2: be if you look in areas in Africa where you
- 44:11Speaker 2: have countries that have moved away from right, you have
- 44:14Speaker 2: countries that move to a park system, in countries that
- 44:18Speaker 2: run a hunting concession system what it winds up doing.
- 44:21Speaker 2: With countries that run like that have like a park system,
- 44:26Speaker 2: you have the same way you'd have it in for instance,
- 44:29Speaker 2: in Montana with Yellowstone National Park or Glacial National Park.
- 44:32Speaker 2: Then the rest of the area. You have a high
- 44:34Speaker 2: volume of spending in a very concentrated area and in
- 44:38Speaker 2: a bunch of neglected area. So in as it's been
- 44:41Speaker 2: explained to me would be in the case of in Africa,
- 44:45Speaker 2: you have these vast, vast, vast areas that are hunting
- 44:48Speaker 2: concession and it brings in small amounts of people that
- 44:52Speaker 2: spend extraordinary amounts of money and allows for habitat preservation
- 44:57Speaker 2: to occur on in remote areas on big landscapes. And
- 45:01Speaker 2: then you have park systems where large amounts of people
- 45:05Speaker 2: spend small amounts of money and they're very concentrated. Its
- 45:10Speaker 2: effectiveness almost lies on its effectiveness almost relies on the concentration, right,
- 45:16Speaker 2: Meaning a dude that goes to Wyoming to hunt elk
- 45:21Speaker 2: and you know the dude goes in Whoming elk is
- 45:23Speaker 2: going to go spend over ten grand. Yeah, all in
- 45:28Speaker 2: you go visit the park, you know, spending that you know,
- 45:31Speaker 2: spending that amount of money. Yeah, right, but that that
- 45:34Speaker 2: two million acres of Yelsow National Park, for instance, that
- 45:38Speaker 2: two million acres generates an enormous amount of money per acre,
- 45:43Speaker 2: but it wouldn't be applicable across these sort of like
- 45:45Speaker 2: less showcase scenarios.
- 45:48Speaker 6: Do you think that's moving our our country to a
- 45:53Speaker 6: got to own to be able to hunt place.
- 45:57Speaker 2: Man everywhere outside of the big pub land areas. Yeah,
- 46:02Speaker 2: I mean I'm witnessing that in my I mean, you know,
- 46:05Speaker 2: I'm turning fifty pretty soon here, so it's like when
- 46:07Speaker 2: I say, in my own lifetime, keep in mind that's
- 46:08Speaker 2: like a half century. Yeah, but I've witnessed that dramatically
- 46:13Speaker 2: in my own lifetime. Pay to play, right, the days
- 46:15Speaker 2: of we used to I used to maintain when I
- 46:19Speaker 2: was growing up in Michigan for trapping, I maintained twenty
- 46:22Speaker 2: five permissions. I had twenty five permissions to hunt trap.
- 46:27Speaker 6: Yeah, it's definitely happening here in the South. I mean,
- 46:30Speaker 6: you have to and I don't know, I don't know
- 46:33Speaker 6: if it's a I don't know if it's people just
- 46:37Speaker 6: don't want people on their land at this point. But
- 46:40Speaker 6: like to me, it was the most it was the
- 46:43Speaker 6: it was the most important thing I could spend money
- 46:45Speaker 6: on was land in order to lock up a place
- 46:50Speaker 6: for my kids reads kids are you know what I mean?
- 46:52Speaker 6: Like I don't care about trucks or any of that
- 46:55Speaker 6: other stuff.
- 46:55Speaker 2: It was like you you were just talking about buying
- 46:57Speaker 2: trucks this morning, when you're supposed.
- 46:59Speaker 6: To talk about readout.
- 47:01Speaker 4: No, we were talking about you bound a truck.
- 47:02Speaker 2: Well just this morning. Well he's rich now he already
- 47:06Speaker 2: got care about trucks.
- 47:08Speaker 6: I'm sorry. I shouldn't say I don't care about trucks.
- 47:11Speaker 6: I care about land more than I care about trucks,
- 47:14Speaker 6: and I care about acquiring land more than I care
- 47:17Speaker 6: about trucks. And that that's what I think. It's part
- 47:21Speaker 6: of the problem as well, is because once I get it,
- 47:23Speaker 6: anybody hunting that, they're not my family's gonna hunt that.
- 47:26Speaker 6: So the more that that happens, the more locking up
- 47:29Speaker 6: that that happens, the less opportunity there is for people
- 47:33Speaker 6: that that's not important to.
- 47:34Speaker 7: Them, especially now that that land is is through the
- 47:40Speaker 7: roof and price.
- 47:41Speaker 2: Man, that's what that's what I mean. So you've decided
- 47:43Speaker 2: no one's hunting your place.
- 47:44Speaker 6: No's not my place. You can come sit with me.
- 47:47Speaker 6: He dogg, but you're not shooting anything. You need a
- 47:50Speaker 6: dough or something. But look, here's the other thing. Okay,
- 47:53Speaker 6: let's take the six point for example, the one I
- 47:55Speaker 6: sent you the picture of. I've been watching that deer
- 47:57Speaker 6: grow for four years. Okay, So I come in, I
- 48:02Speaker 6: work and don't buy trucks for years in order to
- 48:07Speaker 6: be able to purchase this ground. Right, it comes for
- 48:10Speaker 6: sale bound, we hop on it. I go start hunting it.
- 48:14Speaker 6: Dream spot backs up to my little farms, and now
- 48:16Speaker 6: we've got this acreage. I see this six tall six
- 48:19Speaker 6: point right, he's running around out there. I'm like, man,
- 48:21Speaker 6: that thing's pretty be awesome. If he could make it,
- 48:24Speaker 6: he makes it, makes it another year, makes it another year,
- 48:27Speaker 6: and eventually turns into this desired six and a half
- 48:30Speaker 6: year old white tail. Right. So, the thought of me
- 48:32Speaker 6: bringing anybody outside of Jesus Christ to shoot this deer,
- 48:38Speaker 6: it's outlandish.
- 48:39Speaker 2: Dude.
- 48:39Speaker 6: I've been passing this thing. He's been dodging Z seventy
- 48:43Speaker 6: one's for the past six years on those roads. You
- 48:46Speaker 6: know what I'm saying. Not to mention other whack chop
- 48:50Speaker 6: mechanics sitting out behind their house trying to grease and everything.
- 48:55Speaker 4: So like to me, that deer is.
- 48:58Speaker 7: More periodicity an implant driving a flashlight and two seventy.
- 49:03Speaker 6: You know what I'm saying, and I'm with the mindset
- 49:05Speaker 6: of it. I'm just saying, it's a tough spot, right,
- 49:10Speaker 6: It's a tough spot because people want their on ground
- 49:14Speaker 6: and they want to do what they want to do
- 49:15Speaker 6: on their own ground.
- 49:16Speaker 2: Well, let me hit you with this. Okay, this is true,
- 49:19Speaker 2: but like, Okay, my friend Doug Darren, he manages his
- 49:23Speaker 2: family's farm, right, that dude, he takes the number one
- 49:27Speaker 2: number he's interested in. He's interested in two numbers.
- 49:30Speaker 8: One.
- 49:30Speaker 2: He likes to brag about how many people hunted his place.
- 49:34Speaker 6: How old is this guy? We older me, so he's
- 49:37Speaker 6: had some time on there.
- 49:38Speaker 2: Maybe you know what he's I'm older than he was.
- 49:42Speaker 2: He recently pointed out to me. I'm now older than
- 49:44Speaker 2: he was when he and I became friends. That doesn't
- 49:49Speaker 2: mean a whole hell of a lot to you. But
- 49:50Speaker 2: either way, Oh, I don't know what the hell. He
- 49:51Speaker 2: is a decade older than I am. Yeah, maybe a
- 49:54Speaker 2: little more than that. Anyway, he'll brag to me forty
- 49:57Speaker 2: four people hunting my farm. This year in a very
- 49:59Speaker 2: control or andize fashion. And if you go talk to
- 50:01Speaker 2: Doug too, the number of dead deer is usually at
- 50:05Speaker 2: or higher than the number of people that hunted his place.
- 50:07Speaker 4: How big is this place?
- 50:09Speaker 2: Several hundred several hundred acres. He takes pride in getting
- 50:14Speaker 2: people on his place. I got another I got well,
- 50:16Speaker 2: I got another bud. Does he set limits on my buddy,
- 50:19Speaker 2: my buddy, Matt Cook. There's years that dude don't hunt
- 50:22Speaker 2: his place. He's so busy having everybody else on his place,
- 50:25Speaker 2: wounded veterans, kids, non.
- 50:31Speaker 7: He's the last time I went a veterans hunted your spot.
- 50:35Speaker 5: If we had gotten the land behind us? Oh, come on,
- 50:39Speaker 5: okay him, would you invite a bunch of people to
- 50:42Speaker 5: come over and my.
- 50:43Speaker 2: Kids buddies that I got another guy, I got another
- 50:46Speaker 2: guy know uh, another guy know Mark That dude he's
- 50:51Speaker 2: got more kids run around hunting play his place. So
- 50:54Speaker 2: you don't need to be mean. But it also could
- 50:57Speaker 2: be that you could mature into this in old age.
- 51:00Speaker 6: Maybe that's what Doug Duram did.
- 51:02Speaker 2: Well, he did just he used to be. He's and
- 51:04Speaker 2: he'll tell you, well, I'm not saying no one can
- 51:06Speaker 2: ever hunt my place? Well, Jesus you said he could.
- 51:10Speaker 6: Now at this moment, and I mean, yeah, we've shot
- 51:15Speaker 6: some turkeys off there. I'm just saying, it's the it's
- 51:18Speaker 6: the dilemma, right, the dilemma.
- 51:21Speaker 2: I hear you, loud and clear.
- 51:22Speaker 6: Locking up ground for you and yours to do what
- 51:26Speaker 6: they want to do.
- 51:26Speaker 2: On Can I hit you with a scenario, then we're
- 51:29Speaker 2: gonna move on by let's go. And I was guilty,
- 51:33Speaker 2: You already look like an asshole. Well no, I'll hit
- 51:35Speaker 2: you with scenarios. So I own a weird little spot. Okay,
- 51:42Speaker 2: I own a weird little spot where.
- 51:44Speaker 6: Now let me just say this. If you've got a
- 51:45Speaker 6: record deal, you're welcome to hunt my spot. I'll swap
- 51:47Speaker 6: cuts for.
- 51:48Speaker 4: A for a for a dough up tempo positive positive little.
- 51:53Speaker 6: Slide in there. Hey man, shoot that forecorn he he
- 51:57Speaker 6: don't make it down to me.
- 51:59Speaker 2: I have a little spot that opens up some great opportunity.
- 52:03Speaker 2: Like in and of itself, the spot's nothing, but it
- 52:05Speaker 2: just gives you. It gives you like pretty good access
- 52:08Speaker 2: to an area. And buddy of mine owns a little
- 52:11Speaker 2: spot next to the little spot that's.
- 52:12Speaker 6: Somebody of mom own the spot next, no spot, No okay.
- 52:16Speaker 2: So he gets a letter from some kids saying, couldn't help,
- 52:21Speaker 2: but notice you got a nice little spot. Could we
- 52:24Speaker 2: use your little spot to get to.
- 52:26Speaker 6: The other spot?
- 52:27Speaker 2: Other spot? And I said, man, I'd act like I
- 52:31Speaker 2: never saw that letter. And I mud up being real
- 52:33Speaker 2: glad I didn't get the letter because that would have
- 52:36Speaker 2: put me in a morally compromised position.
- 52:38Speaker 6: So did the little Montana heart of yours have done?
- 52:42Speaker 2: I would have been in a buying. I would have
- 52:44Speaker 2: been in the buying. But thankfully I was like, just
- 52:46Speaker 2: I just was. I thanked the universe that that didn't
- 52:49Speaker 2: come to me, because I wouldn't want to have to
- 52:51Speaker 2: deal with the situation like that.
- 52:52Speaker 5: What did he do? Did he say? No, you and
- 52:56Speaker 5: your kid?
- 52:57Speaker 2: I advised him to act like he never saw that one?
- 53:00Speaker 6: Is that what he did? Is that what he did?
- 53:03Speaker 2: Or he was a little distraught about that? He was
- 53:06Speaker 2: a little he was a little dismayed about the address
- 53:12Speaker 2: that they found. M M, what, Yeah, they've done a
- 53:16Speaker 2: lot of work. How he felt a little spied on?
- 53:20Speaker 5: Well, we had someone.
- 53:22Speaker 2: Yeah, let's just leave you at that.
- 53:26Speaker 3: Maybe something for that.
- 53:27Speaker 8: My stepdad has land and had someone approach him about
- 53:31Speaker 8: getting to hunt it, and so my stepdad actually made
- 53:34Speaker 8: a list of jobs he didn't want to do on
- 53:36Speaker 8: the property to help clean it up, and told the kid,
- 53:39Speaker 8: if you trim the fences, paint the fences, do all
- 53:42Speaker 8: this stuff, you can have rights to hunts, to.
- 53:44Speaker 4: Which the kid has not done.
- 53:46Speaker 6: Yes, you know, and then we locked everybody out of it.
- 53:49Speaker 2: I'd invite your dad to visit with the guy I
- 53:53Speaker 2: was talking about, Doug Duran, who lets everybody hunt his
- 53:56Speaker 2: place because not only that, he has started an organization
- 53:59Speaker 2: called Sharing the Land, which is just for that purpose.
- 54:02Speaker 2: Doug's philosophy is is this, like, first off, his philosophy
- 54:06Speaker 2: on land ownership is a it's a it's not ours,
- 54:09Speaker 2: it's our turn. Interesting, it's not ours, it's our turn.
- 54:13Speaker 6: Jesus is really making me.
- 54:15Speaker 2: Look, let me tell you he's gonna get worse. So
- 54:19Speaker 2: Doug's like, every time, you know, everybody knows what the
- 54:22Speaker 2: hunter gets out of the land, right, everybody knows that
- 54:25Speaker 2: the landowner gets out of the land. But Doug's like,
- 54:27Speaker 2: what does the land get out of it? Out of
- 54:29Speaker 2: this exchange? So Doug has started this thing called Sherry
- 54:32Speaker 2: the Land, which is he brings in farmers who have
- 54:35Speaker 2: chore lists right, and he brings in groups of hunters
- 54:41Speaker 2: who say it like I'm ready to work for access.
- 54:45Speaker 2: But the work that they're doing goes toward habitat improvement.
- 54:49Speaker 2: So if a farmers like he wants shelter belts and windrows,
- 54:52Speaker 2: he wants to pull up old fencing, he wants to
- 54:54Speaker 2: do any number of things, they try to gear it
- 54:56Speaker 2: toward land improvement while improvement actually and then he puts
- 55:01Speaker 2: the he pairs the hunters with the landowners. There's no
- 55:05Speaker 2: and it winds up meaning there's no exchange of cash,
- 55:07Speaker 2: so you don't wind up in a weird regulatory space.
- 55:10Speaker 2: But it's like, oh, I've always wanted to, you know,
- 55:13Speaker 2: improve my riparian area, or try to re establish willows
- 55:17Speaker 2: along the creek or the cattle graze it down, or
- 55:20Speaker 2: try to do trout work on my stream, but shit,
- 55:22Speaker 2: I'm not gonna have time to do that. Well, you
- 55:24Speaker 2: get these holsers that want to hunt, and they'll come
- 55:28Speaker 2: out and pour the coals to it and then they
- 55:30Speaker 2: get to do their hunt.
- 55:31Speaker 8: I'm with that, and I think it's good, especially if
- 55:34Speaker 8: the landowner doesn't hunt like they're not going to be
- 55:37Speaker 8: like if you didn't hunt, yeah, you would let people
- 55:39Speaker 8: probably hunt your land.
- 55:41Speaker 2: Yeah. Man, so you.
- 55:42Speaker 5: Got like, I think in Dan's defense.
- 55:45Speaker 4: Yeah, this is a team.
- 55:48Speaker 5: The last you brought up the fact that it's a dilemma,
- 55:54Speaker 5: Like to act like it's not a dilemma is not truthful,
- 55:58Speaker 5: Like you're being honest about it, and you admitted that
- 56:03Speaker 5: you also would were conflicted when you know tangentially.
- 56:10Speaker 6: We're on the same team. He's just not as vocal
- 56:12Speaker 6: about he's just not owning it.
- 56:13Speaker 2: No, No, I'm just putting it in a tough spot.
- 56:15Speaker 6: I know.
- 56:15Speaker 2: But we're on the same team.
- 56:17Speaker 8: I'm not gonna lie. If I owned land, I wouldn't
- 56:19Speaker 8: let people hunt it. I'm just going to say.
- 56:20Speaker 2: It your husband, I mean, yeah, my brother in.
- 56:23Speaker 4: Law without me.
- 56:26Speaker 6: No.
- 56:26Speaker 8: But I mean like if I I mean, I grew
- 56:27Speaker 8: up on a chicken farm in Kentucky and I don't
- 56:31Speaker 8: I wouldn't let people hunt that. I wouldn't let other
- 56:33Speaker 8: people hunt it. I would let my family enjoy it.
- 56:35Speaker 8: I would be selfish about it.
- 56:36Speaker 6: That's what I'm saying.
- 56:37Speaker 4: I'm exploiting myself this tough spot.
- 56:39Speaker 6: And I'm not saying I'm not taking a wounded veteran
- 56:42Speaker 6: back off.
- 56:43Speaker 2: I'm just saying how wounded which war?
- 56:50Speaker 6: No, Look, I mean here's a prime I have a
- 56:52Speaker 6: prime example. They probably never listen to this anyway. There's
- 56:57Speaker 6: a there's a guy that has asked like, hey man,
- 57:01Speaker 6: do you mind? And I was like, yeah, I.
- 57:03Speaker 2: Do mine.
- 57:06Speaker 6: Nicely. I worked extremely hard to have a place for
- 57:12Speaker 6: my family to do this, and we're going to be
- 57:13Speaker 6: doing it on that day. So next year rolls around,
- 57:18Speaker 6: hey man, son's in for Christmas? You mind if we
- 57:24Speaker 6: I was like, ah, wish we could make that work,
- 57:27Speaker 6: but my brother and I are actually going to be
- 57:30Speaker 6: back there on them. Next year rolls around, hey man,
- 57:34Speaker 6: my nine year old granddaughter who has never killed a turkey,
- 57:38Speaker 6: she's a combat veteran, was a combat veteran, and has
- 57:42Speaker 6: a purple heart. Is there any chance? And I was like, dude,
- 57:46Speaker 6: I'm gonna have my nephews. All true, all true. Me
- 57:49Speaker 6: and Reed were hunting at one year, Me and my
- 57:50Speaker 6: dad were hunting the year before, and I was taking
- 57:51Speaker 6: my nephews the next year. All true things. I'm not
- 57:54Speaker 6: just lying about it, but I'm trying to establish the
- 57:58Speaker 6: fact that a bro finally somewhere, buddy, they're out there.
- 58:03Speaker 6: Because I feel like that's what we had to do.
- 58:06Speaker 6: That's what we had to do to get ground. We
- 58:08Speaker 6: had to We hunted core ground and public land, and
- 58:12Speaker 6: I mean I shot a turkey on the other side
- 58:13Speaker 6: of the lake over there then, and I mean we
- 58:16Speaker 6: we worked to have access to places to hunt understood,
- 58:19Speaker 6: and there is ground fifteen minutes down the road that
- 58:23Speaker 6: we have killed deer on. Now were they six year olds? No,
- 58:28Speaker 6: but but we got to hunt there. I feel like
- 58:33Speaker 6: you should be able. Yoh, this sucks to say. I
- 58:37Speaker 6: just keep feeling like a jerk every night time.
- 58:39Speaker 2: No, you don't need to feel like a jerk. It's
- 58:40Speaker 2: a real it's the thing. Let me bring it positive
- 58:43Speaker 2: that we can move on from the conversation.
- 58:45Speaker 6: Sorry, yeah, we've been on.
- 58:45Speaker 2: No. No, I just think that hats off to the people
- 58:50Speaker 2: that have that ability to let people go on. I've
- 58:59Speaker 2: told you joking. I'm totally joking.
- 59:02Speaker 5: If if we ever find ourselves in places where we
- 59:06Speaker 5: can plan to hunt, I would be very interested to
- 59:10Speaker 5: see if you just open it up to all hunters everywhere.
- 59:13Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 59:14Speaker 2: No, I'll be like hunt what when? Okay, do you
- 59:17Speaker 2: do that? With your spots that you hunt.
- 59:18Speaker 6: Now, are you like, after you've filmed me a little show,
- 59:21Speaker 6: do you go, hey, man, by the way, here's the pinpoint.
- 59:23Speaker 6: Go kill everything out there.
- 59:24Speaker 2: Yeah, but not to anybody.
- 59:27Speaker 6: Give me a coordinate.
- 59:28Speaker 2: Well, I, well, here's the deal. There's sort of a
- 59:32Speaker 2: you know, I have a collection of individuals. I have
- 59:39Speaker 2: a circle of individuals that there's that we there's like
- 59:43Speaker 2: an unwritten deal where I throw them little tidbits and
- 59:48Speaker 2: they throw me little tidbits, a.
- 59:50Speaker 5: Little tip for test.
- 59:51Speaker 2: It's test, it's highly reci it's highly reciprocal. And sometimes
- 59:55Speaker 2: you know in The Godfather, when the guy comes and
- 59:58Speaker 2: says the Marlon and he's like he wants something done
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: about someone that violated his daughter and the criminal system
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: let her go, Brando says to him, Someday, I don't
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: know when, but someday I'm gonna have a favor for you.
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: Maybe never, but someday I might have a favor for you,
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: and I'll take care of this.
- 1:00:18Speaker 5: That's how you feel about.
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: So the people that I share with, someday maybe I
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: share with I have an expectation that sometime down the road,
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: I might say, hey, I'm in a little bit of
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: a bind trying to take a buddy mine to get
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: some whatever ducks this weekend. You got any tips, and
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: I would expect, and if they clam up on me,
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: then I would expect, like down the road. I'm not
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: throwing tidbits. I get that, Like you know what I'm saying,
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: I'll do that with fish. But I mean, I don't
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: know about dear fish.
- 1:00:54Speaker 5: Anything you were explaining to me the other day, because
- 1:00:56Speaker 5: I was a little bit surprised by it that if
- 1:00:58Speaker 5: you take someone somewhere where and then they go without you,
- 1:01:02Speaker 5: that that's really just.
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: I just said, it's just it's good policy to acknowledge.
- 1:01:07Speaker 6: Agreed, Yeah, it's.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: A good policy to It'd be like if I take
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: someone to a spot, it's good policy for them to say, hey.
- 1:01:16Speaker 6: What, uh is it cool?
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: If yeah, like I want to go up there and
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: hit that spot. I don't want to be up in
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: each other's business. I know you showed me the spot,
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: like what are you thinking? To which I might t
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: which I would then be very upfront. I'd be like,
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: you know what I was gonna I was gonna go
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: up there with my boy. He already tagged out, I'm
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: not going to hit it this year. If you're gonna
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: hit this year, yeah, and then the one deal is
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: just let me know what you see, right, And I'll
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: say that to people. I'll be like, dude, go you
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: should check this spot, check this spot, let me know
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: what you run into.
- 1:01:42Speaker 6: Now. Look, if we're talking public ground, that's all what
- 1:01:45Speaker 6: I'm talking. It's a different deal. It's all because ultimately
- 1:01:48Speaker 6: you can't hunt it all. Right, that's a different deal.
- 1:01:51Speaker 6: And I'm with you. I would I would do exactly
- 1:01:53Speaker 6: where you're saying. Hey, man, now I'm not telling everybody,
- 1:01:56Speaker 6: and maybe if I bring you to the spot, you
- 1:01:58Speaker 6: don't tell nobody else you if you're going up there
- 1:02:01Speaker 6: with your kid, like, let me know what you see.
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: I've had people say to me, I don't go to
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: spots with people because I don't want to have to
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: then later on be like worried about that stuff. I'd
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: rather just find it all on my own and know
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: that I found it on my own and never have
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: to deal with any kind of weirdness.
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: Worse, I don't know if that's worse than owning land
- 1:02:21Speaker 5: and not letting people hunt it, because you're not really
- 1:02:24Speaker 5: sharing the resource.
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: I do share. I mean there's not there's not I
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: don't have I don't have one public land. I do
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: not have one public land secret that I don't that
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: I don't share with my circle of friends that that
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: that that that we network.
- 1:02:40Speaker 6: How big is that circle?
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: What's the initiation for that circle?
- 1:02:44Speaker 6: Yeah, no doubt.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: It's big because it's spread all around, Yeah, across the country. Yeah,
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: it's spread all around. I mean there's probably I could
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: sit and list. I could probably list there's probably twenty
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: people that depending on what's going on, that I would
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: be like, oh, yeah, buddy.
- 1:03:00Speaker 6: I mean we've checked spots because we don't hunt that anymore.
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: Yeah, And because it's public lands, that's what I'm saying.
- 1:03:06Speaker 6: I mean it's public ground that we've hunted, that we
- 1:03:07Speaker 6: hunted for a long time while we were busting to
- 1:03:12Speaker 6: have our own ground, you know. So we we pay
- 1:03:14Speaker 6: for a lease in a spot, and then we've you know,
- 1:03:17Speaker 6: we purchased some grounds. So so there's not the need
- 1:03:20Speaker 6: to continually stomp out public because it's not a it's
- 1:03:24Speaker 6: a big it's a big place, but it's not giant
- 1:03:26Speaker 6: compared to the pressure. You know.
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: It's all I just think it's all part of it's
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: just all part of fun. Man. And then I'm like
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: way more sympathetic to kids, right if someone's trying to
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: get their kid into some action, We're more sympathetic to
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: record deals.
- 1:03:40Speaker 6: If you get a record deals, there's a good chance
- 1:03:43Speaker 6: you can find some of our secrets out.
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: Moving on, Uh we well we The last time you
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: guys are on the show, we talked about country music
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: and the place that like outdoor living holds within country music.
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: How would you guys describe that? I mean, like, sort
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: of the confluence is very strong. It's not it's not
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: a subtle connection. And I would argue that it is
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: like I listened to country music made from the I
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: don't like anything like pre mid seventies. I listened to
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: country music from the mid seventies to present. It has grown.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: The outdoor hunting, fishing references and stuff within country has
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: absolutely grown in that time. Yeah, I agree to maybe
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: a crescendo right now.
- 1:04:37Speaker 6: I think it's always going to be a part. And
- 1:04:39Speaker 6: you also gotta we also got to like draw a
- 1:04:42Speaker 6: line between like commercial music and non commercial music.
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: Okay, draw that line from it.
- 1:04:49Speaker 6: It's just just a different bit of a genre. And
- 1:04:51Speaker 6: I feel like those genres are kind of blending right now,
- 1:04:54Speaker 6: don't you.
- 1:04:55Speaker 7: Yeah, I would agree, Yeah, I don't know if if
- 1:05:00Speaker 7: it's if it's like more people like you know, it's
- 1:05:03Speaker 7: kind of a snowball effect where you know, it started
- 1:05:08Speaker 7: getting written about and started getting sung about and and
- 1:05:10Speaker 7: now people are kind of jumping onto that ship and
- 1:05:12Speaker 7: writing about it.
- 1:05:13Speaker 4: Or if it's just more people are.
- 1:05:15Speaker 7: Writing lifestyle music and writing what they know, and you
- 1:05:19Speaker 7: have more of those lifestyles coming into town trying to
- 1:05:21Speaker 7: do what you know, trying to write commercial songs, and
- 1:05:23Speaker 7: so it's a good term. More of that content is
- 1:05:26Speaker 7: getting put into the songs that are getting played on
- 1:05:30Speaker 7: the radio because more people do it, you know, it's
- 1:05:32Speaker 7: it's their lifestyle besides you know, not doing it.
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: When you say lifestyle music, explain what you mean by
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: that as opposed to.
- 1:05:43Speaker 7: Faking it, as opposed to, yeah, writing about something you
- 1:05:45Speaker 7: don't know, me writing about New York City. You know,
- 1:05:49Speaker 7: I wouldn't know what If I was going to write
- 1:05:51Speaker 7: a song about New York City, I would have to
- 1:05:52Speaker 7: look up what's in Times Square because I don't know.
- 1:05:55Speaker 4: I don't I hadn't spent time there.
- 1:05:57Speaker 7: I don't you know, I don't know what buildings are where,
- 1:05:59Speaker 7: or what little restaurants or you know, little little niche
- 1:06:02Speaker 7: places that are local to people that they would want
- 1:06:05Speaker 7: to hear that tune. But I can write a song
- 1:06:07Speaker 7: right now about the woods or or fishing or being
- 1:06:10Speaker 7: on a boat or four wheeler or you know. And
- 1:06:13Speaker 7: and that's what we've always taught. When we talked about that,
- 1:06:15Speaker 7: and and the Josh Thompson episode, it's about to me,
- 1:06:18Speaker 7: country music is, and writing songs is writing what you know,
- 1:06:21Speaker 7: and and and writing about your life. And if you know,
- 1:06:25Speaker 7: my life is all about my family, God and hunting
- 1:06:29Speaker 7: and and and so most of the songs that I'm
- 1:06:33Speaker 7: gonna pin out or ideas that I have, if if
- 1:06:36Speaker 7: they meet that space, you know, I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 1:06:39Speaker 7: put in there something about sitting in a you know,
- 1:06:43Speaker 7: an oak flat in November and and watching the sun
- 1:06:48Speaker 7: rise while I'm sitting there waiting on a buck to
- 1:06:49Speaker 7: walk by, you know, because that's what I know, that's
- 1:06:52Speaker 7: what I love, and that's that's that's the truth of
- 1:06:55Speaker 7: to me.
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: You me, and a move like you're gonna play something.
- 1:06:59Speaker 4: Well.
- 1:06:59Speaker 6: I was just thinking a lot of our songs do that,
- 1:07:02Speaker 6: but there are also songs like it's just like a
- 1:07:08Speaker 6: total smooth sex tune. You know what I mean, Like
- 1:07:12Speaker 6: let me hear it.
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: I don't hear the sex part.
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: Put you gotta put the two get ready we singing this?
- 1:07:25Speaker 6: You are okay?
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: I don't have to have with the lyrics.
- 1:07:29Speaker 6: Ready here with the verse.
- 1:07:32Speaker 4: We bent burning both in keeping the lights song. This
- 1:07:38Speaker 4: is not a hunting song, by the way, what we
- 1:07:40Speaker 4: do know a song?
- 1:07:41Speaker 10: I bent thinking we need it a little time alone.
- 1:07:47Speaker 4: Three week, number one's one five.
- 1:07:50Speaker 10: We'll just say we cancel a plane tonight. I'm morning
- 1:07:55Speaker 10: gonna be a man.
- 1:07:58Speaker 4: Let's get some cana burning song.
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: Record all the linestyle.
- 1:08:05Speaker 11: Taking that saying, so the way your body's moving, keep
- 1:08:10Speaker 11: doing what you're doing to me.
- 1:08:15Speaker 4: Got not love song, girl, I wanta gotta heavy. Let
- 1:08:20Speaker 4: the passion take us to a higher please making that
- 1:08:26Speaker 4: kind of love.
- 1:08:27Speaker 5: We mad.
- 1:08:29Speaker 6: Not really about the outdoors, but we.
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: Have outdoors songs, so I'm just saying I don't know
- 1:08:34Speaker 4: where they came from.
- 1:08:35Speaker 6: You gotta write what you know, is what he says.
- 1:08:37Speaker 6: I'm trying to explain that as a commercial country writer,
- 1:08:41Speaker 6: you have to be versatile in the areas that you know,
- 1:08:47Speaker 6: So no, not all of them are Tailgate. Hey, man,
- 1:08:50Speaker 6: come on out, check this lifestyle out. But we also
- 1:08:53Speaker 6: have a lot of songs about that too.
- 1:08:55Speaker 7: But it's kind of like we were talking about earlier.
- 1:08:57Speaker 7: It's it's it's constructing an album. And and you know,
- 1:09:01Speaker 7: if if I was making an album, I would want
- 1:09:04Speaker 7: love songs on there.
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: I would want dad songs on there. I would like
- 1:09:08Speaker 4: hunting songs on there.
- 1:09:10Speaker 7: You know, I wouldn't necessarily want a song about New
- 1:09:13Speaker 7: York City or something like that, because that's not true.
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: It's not my lifestyle.
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: We recently had Evan Felker on Uh turnpot Yeah on
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: the podcast right dude, well, he is love that stuff.
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: I was asking him about. I had some a couple
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: of questions about the role of the outdoors and and
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: his music, and I said, do you ever think to yourself, man,
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: I should put more I could put more hunting references in,
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: or I should pull him out. He says he didn't
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: really like the question, but eventually said that I guess
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: if I thought one way or the other, I think
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: that I could get away with putting more in. But
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: he said, for me, I don't make it. It's not
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: about that. It's just the background, Like I need people
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: they're doing something, so I'm not talking about the act
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: of doing it. I'm talking about something that's going on
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: in people's lives and that's just what they're doing. That's
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: what's happening. Yeah, So it's the backdrop of the subject.
- 1:10:09Speaker 7: Which is which is the thing, because I mean, hearing
- 1:10:12Speaker 7: you say that, you can absolutely write I mean better together.
- 1:10:16Speaker 7: It was a great example of that is is you're
- 1:10:19Speaker 7: writing a love song that's a that's a that's a
- 1:10:21Speaker 7: slow tempo you to your you know, the one you love.
- 1:10:26Speaker 7: But it's got eight eight points in autumn, you know,
- 1:10:29Speaker 7: and and.
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: It's and it's got a yeah board board.
- 1:10:35Speaker 7: So so you're seeing that, and that's that's something to
- 1:10:37Speaker 7: commercial songwriting in the country music. Realm two is like
- 1:10:40Speaker 7: painting these pictures of the life that we all lead,
- 1:10:44Speaker 7: but at the same time tying them into a subject
- 1:10:46Speaker 7: that's love or or you know, something else, whatever it is.
- 1:10:50Speaker 6: That's my favorite part of the trick to The favorite
- 1:10:52Speaker 6: thing about the thing we just played and how it's
- 1:10:54Speaker 6: relative is that when that song was going to radio,
- 1:10:58Speaker 6: three of the wives of the four people that wrote
- 1:11:00Speaker 6: it were pregnant.
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: So it's like they had been doing.
- 1:11:03Speaker 6: Some of that.
- 1:11:03Speaker 4: And here's a little thing too.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: We were actually jump we were we were.
- 1:11:08Speaker 7: In Mississippi on a turkey hunt, and it was it
- 1:11:10Speaker 7: rained us out that morning when we wrote the song,
- 1:11:13Speaker 7: when we wrote half the song we started.
- 1:11:15Speaker 6: We literally went down there to turkey hunt.
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: We were in Camoina.
- 1:11:19Speaker 6: We will don't try to step a million dollars. I
- 1:11:24Speaker 6: don't want to hear no turkey hunting down and from
- 1:11:28Speaker 6: from from meat eater. I don't want to hear nothing
- 1:11:31Speaker 6: about what we need to do turkey hunting.
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: Yeah, we got.
- 1:11:35Speaker 6: Walk up and go. Man, these help sounds sound pretty
- 1:11:39Speaker 6: shitty over here. Don't you just don't want to even
- 1:11:42Speaker 6: step on the court with turkey. I've seen a couple
- 1:11:44Speaker 6: of those episodes.
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: I stand corrected. I stand corrected. You don't need to go.
- 1:11:50Speaker 4: Wet, dude.
- 1:11:51Speaker 7: I got plenty I've killed plenty of I got pictures
- 1:11:53Speaker 7: to show you this dripping wet turkeys.
- 1:11:56Speaker 6: I would I would rather write a hit song say that,
- 1:12:00Speaker 6: much like Reid says, he always says this, you write
- 1:12:03Speaker 6: what you know, and if you can blend some of
- 1:12:07Speaker 6: I feel like if I can get five percent of
- 1:12:10Speaker 6: either my upbringing or what I'm into now or whatever
- 1:12:14Speaker 6: into a song. I feel like, Okay, I can you know,
- 1:12:17Speaker 6: not all of them are one hundred percenters. You know,
- 1:12:20Speaker 6: this artist needs to say exactly what I'm feeling or
- 1:12:24Speaker 6: what I've been through in my life. It doesn't it
- 1:12:26Speaker 6: doesn't necessarily work that. Sometimes you're just making words rhyme.
- 1:12:29Speaker 6: Now a lot of the time, yeah, a lot of
- 1:12:31Speaker 6: the time. It's that the general idea is from a
- 1:12:35Speaker 6: genuine place, right.
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: But but if you had to be.
- 1:12:39Speaker 6: A commercial writer and write two hundred songs a year
- 1:12:42Speaker 6: and every one of them had to be about what
- 1:12:44Speaker 6: you've been through?
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: Is that a volume that's achievable to work to touch
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: that songs? I mean, for us, you'll touch that many songs.
- 1:12:52Speaker 6: Well, I mean there have been years, not now, but
- 1:12:53Speaker 6: at the in the in the grind, in the early
- 1:12:55Speaker 6: probably first five.
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: I mean, I mean you write at least three songs
- 1:12:59Speaker 3: a week. There's fifty two weeks that.
- 1:13:02Speaker 8: In a year. I mean that's one hundred and sixty ish.
- 1:13:05Speaker 8: I mean I'm confronted that a yeah, yeah, I mean so.
- 1:13:09Speaker 6: But I mean, like me, I have a nine year
- 1:13:11Speaker 6: catalog at Sony where I've been the first five of those.
- 1:13:13Speaker 6: I was writing five days a week, sometimes two times
- 1:13:16Speaker 6: a day. And what my point is, the well will
- 1:13:19Speaker 6: run dry on your experiences, which is why you need
- 1:13:23Speaker 6: co wrotes, you need other influences, you need Hey, he
- 1:13:26Speaker 6: needs a song in this realm. Otherwise you're just writing.
- 1:13:30Speaker 6: It just absolutely melts your brain.
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: There's a question I have that's more interesting to me
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: than it is to any of the songwriters. I've asked
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: this question too, would be you'll produce a Let's say
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: you produce a song here like sit in Nashville.
- 1:14:01Speaker 6: Produce is a weird that that'd be a weird term
- 1:14:03Speaker 6: though you said to create something. Yeah, uh, just clearing
- 1:14:09Speaker 6: it up.
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: So here you are, like you guys grew up in
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: the broader area. You grew up in the region, right, Yeah,
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: you're working out in Nashville, Tennessee, and you're and you're
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: working with a You're working with some outdoor know how
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: that would be known here, but might not even be
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: broadly known to other outdoorsmen outside of the country. Meeting
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: I know outdoorsmen that if I said, like, I know
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: guys in Alaska, for instance, older guys in Alaska. If
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: I said I got a nice eight on camera, They're
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: not gonna know what I meant, really, because they don't
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: they're not in they don't do trail cameras. They don't
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: traffic in the lingo a nice eight. Now, if you
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: said I got a nice eight point buck on my
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: trail camera, they'd piece that together, but they might not
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: meet recognize that. So but and that's even some hu familiar.
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: So the thing that I'm always curious about with songwriting
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: is here in Nashville, you're exporting music around the world.
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: People around the world are listening to the music you produce.
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: But then you have these references. There are no way
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: references that are no way going to be understood, right
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: because for them to be legitimate, they're like insider references. Sure,
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: I asked about this point. We're talking about like a
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: Johnson outboard. Now, if you if you went to most
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: people on the street and you asked them, hey, name
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: some outboard companies who makes outboard, They're gonna be like, well,
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: Honda makes outboards, Yamaha makes outboards, Evan Rude makes aullboards.
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: No one around now is gonna say Johnson's right. But
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: there's a there's a great reason to use that because
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: it's it's it's it's it brings reminiscent nostalgic. Right, It's
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: like a certain type of person is going to have
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: and know that.
- 1:15:57Speaker 6: I ask you this, when was when do you feel
- 1:16:00Speaker 6: like Johnson was the one?
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: Like? When?
- 1:16:04Speaker 6: What listener?
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: Like? What year?
- 1:16:05Speaker 6: Section?
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: I'm talking about specific demographic here. I was born in
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: nineteen seventy four, and we spent the eighties trying to
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: keep a Johnson ten running.
- 1:16:12Speaker 6: See, I was born in nineteen eighty three, and when
- 1:16:15Speaker 6: we had Johnson's So between seventy what did you say?
- 1:16:18Speaker 6: How old are you?
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: Like? One hundred and fifty? Right?
- 1:16:21Speaker 6: So between that age and like my age, we know
- 1:16:23Speaker 6: that that was the one in there. So when you
- 1:16:25Speaker 6: think about demographics, I would say probably the people who
- 1:16:29Speaker 6: are listening to that, That's why I clicked in them,
- 1:16:33Speaker 6: is because most of them were. We're seeing that.
- 1:16:35Speaker 4: And you kind of get two birds today it'd be
- 1:16:37Speaker 4: a tatsu, you know what I mean.
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: But it doesn't sound good though exactly.
- 1:16:41Speaker 7: Which is part of that's part of the thing too.
- 1:16:44Speaker 7: But you're getting that, you're getting two things with one word.
- 1:16:47Speaker 7: There is you're you're painting that picture of a motor
- 1:16:51Speaker 7: on the back of the boat, which most people would get,
- 1:16:53Speaker 7: and that's they would listen to that lyric and then
- 1:16:55Speaker 7: going to the next one. Or you get the guy
- 1:16:57Speaker 7: who was trying to keep a Johnson Owen for ten
- 1:17:00Speaker 7: years and that immediately clicks and he's stuck there, you know,
- 1:17:04Speaker 7: and that takes him back to man, probably some of
- 1:17:06Speaker 7: the best days of his life.
- 1:17:07Speaker 6: So kind of like boxing too. It's like you hit
- 1:17:09Speaker 6: with a left and then there's a line right after that.
- 1:17:12Speaker 7: Yeah, and some guys, some guys might dodge that right
- 1:17:16Speaker 7: hook that's coming, or some guys might get knocked out
- 1:17:18Speaker 7: by hook.
- 1:17:19Speaker 4: So you kind of thanks man.
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: I asked Evan Felker about his use of a Belgium okay,
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: a Belgium brown So that's like, you know, I brought
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: that up. Then all kinds of people wrote in, I
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: can't believe Renilda doesn't know about the Belgium made brownings.
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: My old man thought he had a Belgium made browning,
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: so and he got it. So when my maternal grandfather died,
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: my dad took possession of his browning A five, which
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: my dad mistakenly thought was a Belgium made Browning, which
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: meant something to him and didn't mean anything to anyone
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: around him. But then here it's a reference like he's
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: holding it understanding you're gonna wind up. You have a
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: reference that people aren't gonna know what you're talking about. Yeah,
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: for sure, a lot of people like it. Not you
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: have a reference that a lot of people it's con overhead.
- 1:18:10Speaker 6: Yeah, but some of us there's also some some interest
- 1:18:14Speaker 6: in having people just try to figure it out to right,
- 1:18:16Speaker 6: like go dive in there and see see what. Like, Okay,
- 1:18:20Speaker 6: let me ask you this. The fact that it's not
- 1:18:21Speaker 6: Belgium made, does that take anything away from you owning
- 1:18:24Speaker 6: the good Yoh?
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: Yeah, because I had been raised to think that it
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: was great. And then we looked up the serial number and.
- 1:18:29Speaker 6: We're like, does it say made in Belgium.
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: No, there's all these there's all these ways you could
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: have known if you knew, But no, we just looked up.
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: There's a serial number, look up and you tell where
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: it was manufactured.
- 1:18:39Speaker 6: After it went to mind says made in Belgium.
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: Oh, well that means it didn't. I don't know why
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: he thought it did. I don't know where it's at
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: right now. Probably in my mind.
- 1:18:48Speaker 6: Well, you don't even care anymore.
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: No, I do care. I had I tried to shoot
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: it for a while.
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: You're saying you'd care more if it was a Belgium.
- 1:18:55Speaker 6: That's what I'm saying. What it means more to you
- 1:18:57Speaker 6: if it's Belgium made.
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: Yeah, but I wouldn't be able to tell you why
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: they're better. But either way it didn't work good. Maybe
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: it feels Beltgiman who worked good didn't cycle. It wouldn't
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: cycle anything, wouldn't cycle anything.
- 1:19:10Speaker 4: I think too though, going back to the reference.
- 1:19:13Speaker 7: Thing is the front of our minds in a writing
- 1:19:17Speaker 7: country music, and it might be different for La pop
- 1:19:19Speaker 7: writers or New York writers writing pop songs. Like we
- 1:19:23Speaker 7: write country music, commercial country music with the country listener
- 1:19:27Speaker 7: at the front of our mind.
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: God, so like.
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: We're gonna use the lingo that the South is gonna.
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: Pick up on?
- 1:19:34Speaker 6: Can I just interjectateor like without even knowing, you just
- 1:19:39Speaker 6: clicked my brain into songwriting mode and I didn't even
- 1:19:42Speaker 6: hear the last thirty seconds of what we were talking
- 1:19:44Speaker 6: about because you said I wouldn't be able to tell
- 1:19:46Speaker 6: you why, and that's a great hook, Like I wouldn't
- 1:19:49Speaker 6: be able to tell you why, and you can. Immediately
- 1:19:51Speaker 6: my brain went, oh, man, why I love you? Why
- 1:19:54Speaker 6: I don't love you? Why I fell out of love
- 1:19:56Speaker 6: you with you while I fell in love with you.
- 1:19:58Speaker 6: I'm not able to tell you why. Why did we
- 1:20:00Speaker 6: break up? I don't know. I'm not able to tell
- 1:20:01Speaker 6: you why. Like it just doesn't turn off as soon
- 1:20:04Speaker 6: as something hits that, you're like, man, And then I
- 1:20:08Speaker 6: started thinking, well, who would be somebody that could sing that?
- 1:20:10Speaker 6: And you start running artists through your brain. Then you go, well,
- 1:20:13Speaker 6: does this guy need that or is it already cleared up?
- 1:20:15Speaker 6: Is he already cut? And he's not cutting from another
- 1:20:17Speaker 6: two years? So knock that guy out? Who's the next
- 1:20:19Speaker 6: guy on the list? And that all that happened within
- 1:20:21Speaker 6: the last thirty seconds. Because you said he's hard to
- 1:20:24Speaker 6: follow a conversation. Well, I started to bring my to
- 1:20:26Speaker 6: take my phone down to my phone and I was like, nah,
- 1:20:28Speaker 6: Katie sitting right beside me, show sure that that would
- 1:20:30Speaker 6: be rude. Just sacrifice that idea if anybody writes.
- 1:20:35Speaker 3: Well, nobody wrote that right that before this, here's one that's.
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: Good for you. It's my favorite quote.
- 1:20:41Speaker 6: Hey wait, I don't know if I want you to
- 1:20:42Speaker 6: say it on here because then everybody could know because
- 1:20:45Speaker 6: we'll just write it before this comes out.
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: That's a great.
- 1:20:47Speaker 6: Quote, all right.
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: I was explaining to him.
- 1:20:50Speaker 6: He God, do you think it's gonna be good?
- 1:20:52Speaker 11: Or no?
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: This is good. No, I see you're saying that, but
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: we know whether it is what they all say. I
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: wasn't good. I wouldn't be telling you. I wouldn't have
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: it written. Favorite quote. Yeah, they also I got favorite
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: quotes I got somebody wouldn't say in their go ahead. Yeah,
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: he said. I was explaining something hint to him about manufacturing,
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: and manufacturing is his business. He manufactures in a different
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: sector in the sector of manufacturing I was talking about
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: and I was telling him like, well, everybody knows you
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: can't blank, to which he says, I don't know why
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: that's not true, but that's not true.
- 1:21:23Speaker 6: Pretty good. It's better than my dad's. My dad's was
- 1:21:26Speaker 6: working for the weekend, So I'll take that.
- 1:21:27Speaker 4: One, bro, Dad's dads are better. When he doesn't even
- 1:21:30Speaker 4: know he's saying.
- 1:21:30Speaker 6: Them, I know.
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: My mom's like, my mom will come up.
- 1:21:33Speaker 4: With a great idea to tell you, and you can
- 1:21:34Speaker 4: write that. Dad's like, hey, man, listen.
- 1:21:37Speaker 7: I woke up last night with an incredible thought working
- 1:21:42Speaker 7: for the weekend, and I'm like, okay, well and then
- 1:21:45Speaker 7: he starts telling me what he did yesterday and I'll
- 1:21:47Speaker 7: get four US song ideas out of that.
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: Yeah, what what songwriters do you guys like?
- 1:21:52Speaker 6: I'm a big Tony Lane fan. Oh man, Yeah, there's
- 1:21:55Speaker 6: a lot we don't like too.
- 1:21:56Speaker 7: I mean we've had tell me yeah, I mean I
- 1:21:58Speaker 7: didn't put a negative. Yeah, we had him, We had
- 1:22:00Speaker 7: him on the podcast and he'll have his episode out.
- 1:22:03Speaker 7: But you know, Casey bethard Is is the goat man.
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: Now? Is it like? You like them? The ones you like?
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: You like them lyrically, you like them because the melody
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: that's interesting.
- 1:22:15Speaker 6: I mean I say this all the time. We write
- 1:22:19Speaker 6: with a lot of people. We know, we've met a
- 1:22:21Speaker 6: lot of people, and songwriters to me are the most entertaining,
- 1:22:26Speaker 6: coolest individuals on earth because there's always there's usually a
- 1:22:32Speaker 6: sense of humbleness because the town kicked them in the
- 1:22:34Speaker 6: teeth for ten to fifteen.
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: Years old when they were trying to be a performer.
- 1:22:37Speaker 6: For sure, they figured the thing out or just.
- 1:22:39Speaker 4: A songwriter, yeah, yeah, they.
- 1:22:41Speaker 6: Figured the thing out and then and then their stuff
- 1:22:45Speaker 6: started hitting, and they stayed true to what they are,
- 1:22:49Speaker 6: regardless of what that is.
- 1:22:51Speaker 4: Yeah, and I think with most of them.
- 1:22:52Speaker 7: Man, now that we've moved to town and we've met
- 1:22:56Speaker 7: a lot of the guys that a lot of the
- 1:22:57Speaker 7: guys that were writing the songs that we'd love growing
- 1:22:59Speaker 7: up up, you know, we've met some of those cats,
- 1:23:01Speaker 7: and and it's it's everything. It's it's who they are
- 1:23:05Speaker 7: as a person. It's it's their their story that you
- 1:23:09Speaker 7: they tell you and you can see where these songs
- 1:23:11Speaker 7: came from. And it's the lyrics and the stories and
- 1:23:13Speaker 7: the songs, and it's the way they sing them in
- 1:23:16Speaker 7: the melody and all of it. It's it's all those
- 1:23:17Speaker 7: things that make you love somebody's work, you know.
- 1:23:21Speaker 6: Now, I'd say, man, there they're they're major guys, like
- 1:23:24Speaker 6: I mean, Whalen, you.
- 1:23:26Speaker 4: Know, Christopherson, Yeah, uh, Johnny Cash.
- 1:23:30Speaker 6: I mean, all these people wrote songs, but there are
- 1:23:32Speaker 6: also people behind the curtains that are that are so
- 1:23:37Speaker 6: important to the genre that a lot of people never see.
- 1:23:39Speaker 6: And those people and a lot of those writers don't
- 1:23:41Speaker 6: want you to see them. They want to stay. And
- 1:23:43Speaker 6: I segue I also think That's what's great about what
- 1:23:47Speaker 6: the podcast that we're doing is we're able to bring
- 1:23:49Speaker 6: a light to those people without just completely exploiting them.
- 1:23:52Speaker 6: You know. It's it's it's more of a like a
- 1:23:54Speaker 6: respect issue and and saying that, hey, these guys earn
- 1:23:57Speaker 6: their stripes as well. There are guys like Casey Bether,
- 1:24:01Speaker 6: Josh Thompson, Bryce Long, the people that we've had on,
- 1:24:03Speaker 6: the people that we plan to have on, who just
- 1:24:05Speaker 6: live behind that curtain and.
- 1:24:06Speaker 7: Yeah, and grew up just like everybody else, like same
- 1:24:08Speaker 7: stories as we all got about in are.
- 1:24:10Speaker 6: Absolute masterful wordsmith, What is.
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: The general trajectory? You just use the term move to town,
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: ten year town, baby, I guess that means that, like
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: you moved to Nashville. What's the general trajectory.
- 1:24:22Speaker 4: Ten year town, ten town, whatever?
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: Cause, I mean it's and for me it was, but
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: tell tell me from you guys.
- 1:24:28Speaker 6: So I moved. I moved here in oh.
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: Eight because of what I mean, I know why, But like,
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: how did you go?
- 1:24:34Speaker 5: Like?
- 1:24:34Speaker 6: Now was my now is? I had a band. I
- 1:24:36Speaker 6: had a funk country band. We played but we played
- 1:24:38Speaker 6: Stevie Wonder.
- 1:24:39Speaker 4: We played Jamie Davis and soul gravy.
- 1:24:42Speaker 7: Dan was the soul gravy got it?
- 1:24:46Speaker 4: What what did I just do?
- 1:24:47Speaker 6: Somebody likes to say I was the gravy and I
- 1:24:49Speaker 6: don't know why they say that.
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: Do you no me either? So we had this band
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: and like you're the good thing that they put on
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: top of something.
- 1:24:59Speaker 8: I think it's geez.
- 1:25:02Speaker 6: Jordan just why'd you look at my stomach when she
- 1:25:05Speaker 6: said wait?
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: So?
- 1:25:10Speaker 6: Uh, anyway, we we we were getting these we I
- 1:25:13Speaker 6: didn't know it, but we were actually getting the run,
- 1:25:15Speaker 6: the Nashville like run, like possibly signing us as a band,
- 1:25:20Speaker 6: and they were putting us with different riders.
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: We didn't know it. Well, we were talking to me
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: like I'm five years old.
- 1:25:25Speaker 6: Well, we were essentially babies in the industry and didn't
- 1:25:31Speaker 6: know that this could even be a career. Right, So
- 1:25:34Speaker 6: when our band starts getting the frontman Jamie, who's one
- 1:25:38Speaker 6: of my best buddies, and then me, we're coming up
- 1:25:41Speaker 6: here and doing the co writes with with they were
- 1:25:44Speaker 6: they were using their leverage to get us into rooms
- 1:25:46Speaker 6: that we didn't necessarily even deserve on the possibility that
- 1:25:49Speaker 6: we might be a signed band.
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: But they is who the business, whether that.
- 1:25:54Speaker 4: Be a manager, a manager, B and my uh and.
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: You guys had your band was where based out of
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: North Mississippi. So you started getting some tracks, start getting
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: so you get some invites to work on stuff. There
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: you go yep.
- 1:26:06Speaker 6: And as that starts happening, we kind of realized, like
- 1:26:10Speaker 6: we don't want to necessarily be that upfront band right
- 1:26:13Speaker 6: Like it was fun, but I don't want to I
- 1:26:16Speaker 6: never wanted to do that. I always wanted to be
- 1:26:18Speaker 6: a songwriter, a back like harmony singer, a company guitarist.
- 1:26:22Speaker 6: I never had. I never had ambitions for the Light.
- 1:26:25Speaker 6: Reid grew up under us and his band and I
- 1:26:27Speaker 6: mean having little bands and stuff. My favorite story about
- 1:26:30Speaker 6: him is when when we started, I was I was
- 1:26:35Speaker 6: traveling with his band, just kind of helping. And then
- 1:26:39Speaker 6: when a big run of shows came in on the
- 1:26:41Speaker 6: week on the starting date of both season me and
- 1:26:45Speaker 6: Dad I told him I couldn't go. I said, me
- 1:26:46Speaker 6: and Dad are going to deer Camp. He was like what.
- 1:26:49Speaker 6: I was like, Yeah, we're going to deer Camp. He's like, Oh,
- 1:26:51Speaker 6: if y'all think y'all are leaving me on the road
- 1:26:53Speaker 6: while y'all go to deer camp, it's out hung up
- 1:26:55Speaker 6: the phone, canceled all the gigs and never played in
- 1:26:57Speaker 6: another one.
- 1:26:58Speaker 7: And here's my Here's I'm I'm gonna be real vulnerable
- 1:27:01Speaker 7: with this. But my it was never my dream to
- 1:27:06Speaker 7: do this. It was never my dream to write songs.
- 1:27:09Speaker 7: I had a dream to perform like because I always did.
- 1:27:12Speaker 4: I grew up in church. My dad was a Baptist
- 1:27:14Speaker 4: pastor still is and I sang. I was the front man.
- 1:27:17Speaker 7: I sang every Sunday two and three times standing ovations,
- 1:27:21Speaker 7: Let's sing it again, like I alway, that was my
- 1:27:24Speaker 7: I grew up doing that, and so I felt like
- 1:27:27Speaker 7: I had a My dream was to perform to big
- 1:27:30Speaker 7: audiences and crowds and then moving here. And I didn't
- 1:27:35Speaker 7: move here on the on the base to do that.
- 1:27:37Speaker 7: I moved here because dam was like, hey man, you
- 1:27:39Speaker 7: need to come do this like And I was in
- 1:27:42Speaker 7: school at ut Knoxville, chased a girl up there, terrible decision,
- 1:27:45Speaker 7: got some great song ideas out of it, but filled
- 1:27:47Speaker 7: physics twice and was kind of sitting.
- 1:27:49Speaker 4: I was actually at their show. I was literally Jamie.
- 1:27:52Speaker 4: It was on Christmas break.
- 1:27:56Speaker 7: It was on Christmas break Mississippi and my girlfriend at
- 1:28:01Speaker 7: the time, sorry, I'm sorry Joean for talking about a
- 1:28:03Speaker 7: girlfriend time. But my girlfriend at the time called me.
- 1:28:06Speaker 7: She goes, hey, you failed physics again. She was like,
- 1:28:07Speaker 7: what are you gonna do? And I was like, ex girlfriend,
- 1:28:10Speaker 7: how did she know she took dude, because she signed
- 1:28:13Speaker 7: me up from my classes. I didn't even know what
- 1:28:15Speaker 7: credits were in college. Bro, Like she just did everything
- 1:28:18Speaker 7: because that and that's how like, I just didn't know
- 1:28:19Speaker 7: what I wanted to do. And she was like, you
- 1:28:21Speaker 7: feel physics for a second time. You're not getting into
- 1:28:23Speaker 7: med school?
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: And I was.
- 1:28:25Speaker 7: I was having a good time in Cupolo, Misissippi, sitting
- 1:28:27Speaker 7: on a park bench outside this club where they were
- 1:28:29Speaker 7: playing this song and I was kind of looking up.
- 1:28:31Speaker 4: She goes, what are you gonna do? And me and
- 1:28:33Speaker 4: Dan had been like, dude, you got to move to Nashville.
- 1:28:35Speaker 6: Man.
- 1:28:35Speaker 7: We write from you know, three to eleven, We three
- 1:28:38Speaker 7: or four days a week. We get to travel. And
- 1:28:40Speaker 7: I and I was sitting there my part bitch and
- 1:28:41Speaker 7: I told her. I was like, I think I think
- 1:28:43Speaker 7: I'm moving to Nashville. She was like, what what are
- 1:28:45Speaker 7: you going to do in Nashville. I was like, I
- 1:28:47Speaker 7: don't know, I'm gonna sing and write songs. We broke
- 1:28:50Speaker 7: up that night on the phone on that part bench
- 1:28:52Speaker 7: atu below. I walked inside, this was going down.
- 1:28:55Speaker 4: I went through.
- 1:28:56Speaker 7: I'm like, I'm like slithering my way through this crowd
- 1:28:59Speaker 7: of people, who are you know, singing every Jamie Davis song,
- 1:29:01Speaker 7: these cover songs, and I.
- 1:29:03Speaker 4: Get to the front and I went Dan and.
- 1:29:05Speaker 6: I'm like, dang.
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: People call me spans Cat. What I went?
- 1:29:09Speaker 4: I went? I went, I'm moving to Nashville.
- 1:29:12Speaker 6: People call me the gangster of I'm like, what do
- 1:29:15Speaker 6: I fell.
- 1:29:16Speaker 4: Minute again and I just broke up with my girlfriend.
- 1:29:18Speaker 6: I'm like, oh sick, all right, let me finish this.
- 1:29:20Speaker 6: I kind of got a thing going. I'll get back
- 1:29:22Speaker 6: to you in a minute.
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: And that was it.
- 1:29:25Speaker 6: That was it.
- 1:29:25Speaker 4: I moved that semester. At the end of that semester,
- 1:29:27Speaker 4: I moved to town.
- 1:29:28Speaker 7: We started writing some songs for my project, and we
- 1:29:32Speaker 7: got a band going. We went out and played some shows,
- 1:29:34Speaker 7: and I quickly found out that that's not what I
- 1:29:37Speaker 7: wanted to do. I had fallen in love with with
- 1:29:40Speaker 7: writing music in the room and hearing other people sing
- 1:29:42Speaker 7: those songs, but being gone, I'm a homebody and there
- 1:29:46Speaker 7: ain't no way that my dad and my brother are
- 1:29:48Speaker 7: gonna be grilling real biz's at Deer Camp in the
- 1:29:51Speaker 7: fall when I'm out here grinding my ass off on
- 1:29:55Speaker 7: a tour bus, you know, twenty two hours a day,
- 1:29:58Speaker 7: just enjoying the hour and a half if I'm on
- 1:30:00Speaker 7: stage and I found out that that wasn't for me.
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: And if you enjoy the twenty two hours but you
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: hate the hour and a half you're on stage, you're.
- 1:30:09Speaker 4: In a predicament too, because because well, they don't pay
- 1:30:14Speaker 4: you to play it.
- 1:30:15Speaker 6: I feel like.
- 1:30:15Speaker 8: Josh Thompson's episode is a great answer to that question
- 1:30:18Speaker 8: because he talks about that.
- 1:30:21Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, Josh is a great example of that.
- 1:30:23Speaker 7: The guy moved to town, got a record deal, did
- 1:30:25Speaker 7: the thing, hated it, man hated it, but loved writing
- 1:30:28Speaker 7: songs and loved being at home because you still get
- 1:30:30Speaker 7: to scratch that creative itch that you have within those
- 1:30:34Speaker 7: walls of a writing room, but don't have to be
- 1:30:37Speaker 7: away from your family and you know, do the grind
- 1:30:40Speaker 7: that is being a recording artist in Nashville.
- 1:30:43Speaker 6: Speaking of which I've had a creative itch ever since
- 1:30:45Speaker 6: we ate that deer that the k.
- 1:30:47Speaker 4: Yeah, well money, talk to your.
- 1:30:50Speaker 6: Town dude, all I'm saying is, as you come to
- 1:30:52Speaker 6: the town as a writer, essentially, what what you go
- 1:30:55Speaker 6: through is finding your people first off, trying to get in.
- 1:31:00Speaker 6: However you can get in a lot of the times,
- 1:31:02Speaker 6: that's writers rounds where there's this confluence of people who
- 1:31:07Speaker 6: are trying to all get to the same place, and
- 1:31:09Speaker 6: they end up co writing and writing maybe a song
- 1:31:13Speaker 6: that gets picked up by a smaller artist or a
- 1:31:15Speaker 6: larger artist, or maybe they get an album cut on something,
- 1:31:17Speaker 6: and then all of a sudden, a publishing company comes
- 1:31:19Speaker 6: snooping and goes, hey, we see that you're friends with
- 1:31:23Speaker 6: who artists X, and it looks like you have four
- 1:31:26Speaker 6: or five on his record and he just got a
- 1:31:28Speaker 6: record deal, which immediately means there's going to be income
- 1:31:30Speaker 6: on those songs. So we would like to take a
- 1:31:33Speaker 6: chance on you, and even though you don't have enough
- 1:31:35Speaker 6: money to quit your day job as a pizza pizza
- 1:31:40Speaker 6: delivery guy, we like to give you a substantial amount
- 1:31:44Speaker 6: of income substantial, okay, a minimal source of income in
- 1:31:49Speaker 6: order to make your bill so that you can write
- 1:31:51Speaker 6: full time. And when that happens, they usually end up
- 1:31:54Speaker 6: giving a large portion of their publishing to that in
- 1:31:57Speaker 6: order to get off the ground, which is what happened
- 1:31:59Speaker 6: with both of us, which is kind of the play, right,
- 1:32:01Speaker 6: And so once you get in there and you start
- 1:32:04Speaker 6: writing songs, it's like, man, if I can just keep
- 1:32:06Speaker 6: doing this and get a cut here, a cut there,
- 1:32:08Speaker 6: then make them their money back, then all of a sudden,
- 1:32:11Speaker 6: there's longevity in what I'm doing, and over the court
- 1:32:14Speaker 6: that entire process, it's just been proven. I mean, now, look,
- 1:32:18Speaker 6: there is absolutely people who move to town and have
- 1:32:20Speaker 6: a hit within six months of being here. But the
- 1:32:23Speaker 6: majority of people that come here, learn the craft, get
- 1:32:28Speaker 6: their teeth kicked in, have a bye to success.
- 1:32:31Speaker 4: Stay uncomfortable for a long amount of time.
- 1:32:33Speaker 6: Yeah, and end up crying in a parking lot in
- 1:32:35Speaker 6: their car when they hear their song on the radio.
- 1:32:38Speaker 2: Is a is a major's store.
- 1:32:41Speaker 5: There's a lot of similarities between book publishing, Oh my god, yeah,
- 1:32:46Speaker 5: and writers in New York that that we know and
- 1:32:49Speaker 5: people that have like some people at their first book,
- 1:32:52Speaker 5: it's like New York Times bestseller. We have friends that
- 1:32:55Speaker 5: have done that, and then friends that have written for
- 1:32:57Speaker 5: twenty years and you know, love it, stay with it
- 1:33:01Speaker 5: and might find success later on. But it's it's yeah,
- 1:33:05Speaker 5: there's a I think that's the thing that I love
- 1:33:07Speaker 5: about this podcast that you guys have so lovingly put together,
- 1:33:12Speaker 5: is that I don't know a lot about country music.
- 1:33:16Speaker 5: Like I'm learning about country music really through this podcast.
- 1:33:19Speaker 5: I don't. I'm not super passionate about hunting myself. I'm
- 1:33:24Speaker 5: very happy that our family has involved in it the
- 1:33:27Speaker 5: way that we are. But I feel like I can
- 1:33:30Speaker 5: relate to the episodes that I've been able to listen
- 1:33:32Speaker 5: to because of the personal journeys, because of the stories.
- 1:33:36Speaker 5: There's a there's similarities to other, you know, individuals in
- 1:33:41Speaker 5: their own path that I find a lot of resonance in.
- 1:33:44Speaker 5: And you know, I was listening to one of the
- 1:33:47Speaker 5: early episodes, one of the edits with our oldest Jimmy
- 1:33:51Speaker 5: on the way to school, and I think I texted
- 1:33:53Speaker 5: you guys about this. He was like, this is my
- 1:33:55Speaker 5: favorite Meet Eater podcast. I was like, you better watch out.
- 1:33:58Speaker 6: I'm not.
- 1:34:03Speaker 5: But I get it. I mean, I love it.
- 1:34:05Speaker 6: And wait, I'm curious as to why he said that,
- 1:34:08Speaker 6: and I'm not.
- 1:34:08Speaker 2: Trying to get.
- 1:34:11Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:34:11Speaker 5: Yeah, just like, man, you laugh a lot listening to
- 1:34:15Speaker 5: your podcast, you guys, I think obviously your brothers.
- 1:34:19Speaker 8: They won't brag on themselves, but I will brag on them.
- 1:34:23Speaker 8: But I think something that also makes it really great
- 1:34:26Speaker 8: is these guys lived on a houseboat for four years
- 1:34:30Speaker 8: before I mean these ten years at the ten Year Town.
- 1:34:32Speaker 8: For four of those years they lived on a houseboat together.
- 1:34:35Speaker 8: They caught their dinner off the back deck of the boat,
- 1:34:37Speaker 8: They washed their clothes in the y m c a gym,
- 1:34:39Speaker 8: in the gym locker room. Facts like all these things.
- 1:34:43Speaker 8: And I think whenever people come, they're human, and they're
- 1:34:46Speaker 8: very relatable to a lot of these people that are
- 1:34:48Speaker 8: coming in here to tell their stories, and everybody that
- 1:34:51Speaker 8: sat down on this couch with them, I think connects
- 1:34:54Speaker 8: with them on a human level. And the conversations that
- 1:34:57Speaker 8: have happened thus far have been very prett much. Everybody
- 1:35:00Speaker 8: that's come in here has told a story that hasn't
- 1:35:03Speaker 8: been told and on any other platform, because it's they're
- 1:35:06Speaker 8: being interviewed by their buddies who share a very similar experience.
- 1:35:10Speaker 8: They're not being interviewed on the Today Show, if that
- 1:35:13Speaker 8: makes sense. And I think that that's really what has
- 1:35:15Speaker 8: made it such a cool thing and will continue to
- 1:35:18Speaker 8: make it a cool thing because you guys are just dudes,
- 1:35:21Speaker 8: and you grind.
- 1:35:22Speaker 3: You're still grinding. I mean, they're still so far to go.
- 1:35:24Speaker 8: And I don't know, I just feel like people, everyone
- 1:35:27Speaker 8: that's come in here so far, it's been very like human,
- 1:35:30Speaker 8: even top Hall of Fame songwriters have come in here
- 1:35:34Speaker 8: and Ben Haslip talking about owning the hat company and
- 1:35:37Speaker 8: grinding out.
- 1:35:37Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:35:38Speaker 8: I just think it's been really cool and it's going
- 1:35:40Speaker 8: to be cool for fans to see that as well.
- 1:35:42Speaker 6: I was extremely nervous about knowing too much about the business,
- 1:35:50Speaker 6: you know, to come in and talk about it day
- 1:35:52Speaker 6: in and day out, Like how boring does that get?
- 1:35:55Speaker 6: You know? But what's been beautiful is what you're saying,
- 1:35:58Speaker 6: is having a platform to where people can just come
- 1:36:01Speaker 6: in and just tell stories, like because that's essentially all
- 1:36:04Speaker 6: songwriter is a really great storyteller, you know. Yeah, and
- 1:36:07Speaker 6: finding a way to put that to music.
- 1:36:08Speaker 7: And every journey, every journey to Nashville, moving to town,
- 1:36:13Speaker 7: or you know, the journey from from a songwriter's young
- 1:36:16Speaker 7: life to loving country music to get in here to
- 1:36:19Speaker 7: actually doing it is. Yeah, there are similarities within it,
- 1:36:22Speaker 7: but man, they're so unique and those stories that come out.
- 1:36:26Speaker 4: Of that well of of stories are some of the
- 1:36:29Speaker 4: best that I think you can hear, because, like Dan said,
- 1:36:31Speaker 4: I mean, that's their job.
- 1:36:33Speaker 7: Our job is to is to tell a story in
- 1:36:35Speaker 7: such a way and to paint it in such a
- 1:36:37Speaker 7: way that you want to listen to it over and
- 1:36:39Speaker 7: over and over and over. And we're getting those from
- 1:36:44Speaker 7: from the from the best of the best.
- 1:36:45Speaker 6: Man.
- 1:36:46Speaker 2: So how deep is the well? I mean very deep?
- 1:36:49Speaker 6: And the reason the well is deep is because you
- 1:36:51Speaker 6: go through those times and and I can. I mean
- 1:36:54Speaker 6: people ask me all the time, when did you start writing?
- 1:36:57Speaker 6: And I was, like, man, third grade first, as soon
- 1:36:59Speaker 6: as I could literally write, like I had to, that
- 1:37:04Speaker 6: was my way of expressing myself. And I remember I
- 1:37:08Speaker 6: remember dealing with like I mean, I was a big
- 1:37:11Speaker 6: football player, you know. And I remember like I couldn't shore,
- 1:37:14Speaker 6: I couldn't share with anybody my writing because that was
- 1:37:17Speaker 6: too effeminate for who I was. I was a football player.
- 1:37:20Speaker 6: I was a deer killer man I was we were
- 1:37:23Speaker 6: we were catching fish. I couldn't be no poet, you
- 1:37:25Speaker 6: know what I mean. I didn't have a place, didn't
- 1:37:30Speaker 6: have a place, took buddies occasionally, but the whole point
- 1:37:34Speaker 6: being is that, like I always wrote, I always expressed myself.
- 1:37:39Speaker 6: And until I figured out that if you put those
- 1:37:42Speaker 6: poems to music you could get chicks, I was like, oh,
- 1:37:46Speaker 6: maybe I need to learn how to play guitar in
- 1:37:48Speaker 6: order to do that. And then this whole.
- 1:37:50Speaker 2: What were you're writing poems? Yeah?
- 1:37:52Speaker 6: Yeah, And just like my mom even talks about, you know,
- 1:37:57Speaker 6: if I liked a girl or something, I would journal
- 1:37:59Speaker 6: like about the thing, Like you know, it's just kind
- 1:38:02Speaker 6: of like it's it was embarrassing at the time though
- 1:38:05Speaker 6: now it's something that I'm I'm proud I did, but
- 1:38:08Speaker 6: at the time it was like, man, I can't let
- 1:38:10Speaker 6: him know that I'm I'm one hundred and fifty five pounds.
- 1:38:13Speaker 6: I can't be journaling, dude. I got dudes to knock
- 1:38:15Speaker 6: over in pee wee football. Man. I was in fourth grade,
- 1:38:18Speaker 6: away one forty five. You know, I couldn't be.
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: A little sassy guy.
- 1:38:22Speaker 6: Man. I had to go you know, making words rhyme dude. Yeah, Man,
- 1:38:25Speaker 6: the time for that, that's weak. But it was always
- 1:38:30Speaker 6: in us and music was always in read and that's
- 1:38:31Speaker 6: why I didn't have any trouble with going, Hey, dude,
- 1:38:34Speaker 6: you got to come check this out. Man, It's been
- 1:38:36Speaker 6: in you since birth. You've been singing like a bird
- 1:38:38Speaker 6: since you were seven.
- 1:38:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I didn't.
- 1:38:40Speaker 7: I didn't write much when I was little, but I
- 1:38:42Speaker 7: sang constantly.
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: In church everywhere, which is one which which church.
- 1:38:49Speaker 6: Hasn't changed. I mean you said it earlier. It's like
- 1:38:52Speaker 6: melody is more of your things that's to wear. There
- 1:38:54Speaker 6: is more minded. It never really changed, it just kind
- 1:38:57Speaker 6: of matured. So his strength is that I feel like
- 1:39:00Speaker 6: my stream, I'm not. We do this all the time. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:39:05Speaker 6: eventually after ten years you kind of learn things to take.
- 1:39:10Speaker 6: You want it spicy, you want it sweet, you want
- 1:39:12Speaker 6: it mild. I mean there's you know, and there's different
- 1:39:16Speaker 6: chilis for different people. And sometimes you want it spicy,
- 1:39:19Speaker 6: which is why you might go with a bomb, you know.
- 1:39:23Speaker 6: Sometimes you want it smooth, which you might go sometimes
- 1:39:28Speaker 6: you just want it sweet to feel good. So that
- 1:39:33Speaker 6: has a different feeling, you know. It's like there's there's
- 1:39:36Speaker 6: so many.
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: Different figures at a chili bar right now.
- 1:39:39Speaker 6: I'm just saying, different riders are different spices, and they
- 1:39:43Speaker 6: bring different tastes, if you will, to the music. And
- 1:39:47Speaker 6: the business knows that the business knows, and that's why
- 1:39:50Speaker 6: you have multiple companies pairing different people with with with
- 1:39:54Speaker 6: different people, because this guy might sound like this and
- 1:39:55Speaker 6: this guy sounds like this, but together they taste this
- 1:39:58Speaker 6: great and this guy needs that taste.
- 1:40:00Speaker 7: Well, that's why you don't have the same song. The
- 1:40:01Speaker 7: same song will be written a lot, but in a
- 1:40:03Speaker 7: lot of different ways, you know. And and that's where
- 1:40:06Speaker 7: you get that is just the melting pot of of
- 1:40:10Speaker 7: life and lifestyles that you have working in these houses
- 1:40:12Speaker 7: on Music Row every day.
- 1:40:13Speaker 2: Yeah, so hit me with, hit me with a like
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: an episode of God's Country is going to cover what?
- 1:40:22Speaker 4: Mhmm it's gonna I mean, do.
- 1:40:25Speaker 6: We have an answer to this? I feel like Jordans
- 1:40:26Speaker 6: or Katie should.
- 1:40:27Speaker 3: Answer this Hot topics kind of kick it off with
- 1:40:30Speaker 3: hot topics.
- 1:40:30Speaker 6: We just kind of get on there and talk. I
- 1:40:32Speaker 6: don't really know that there's actually.
- 1:40:33Speaker 8: A formert no, I mean intro with whatever news depending
- 1:40:39Speaker 8: on who's sitting in the seat, kind of going into
- 1:40:41Speaker 8: their upbringing their story to Nashville.
- 1:40:44Speaker 3: I feel like it's a pretty common theme performer.
- 1:40:47Speaker 2: What do you guys call them? The artists artists with
- 1:40:50Speaker 2: the writers are artists, So writers and artists, songwriters. Is
- 1:40:53Speaker 2: a recording artist. There you some of them. Some of
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: the artists are writers too. Don't put me in a spot.
- 1:41:00Speaker 7: D We get into a lot of of of backstory
- 1:41:04Speaker 7: of and kind of the way the podcast has gone
- 1:41:06Speaker 7: so far is is it almost is like the front
- 1:41:08Speaker 7: of the front half of it is is kind of
- 1:41:10Speaker 7: getting the letting the artists express himself and how he
- 1:41:13Speaker 7: grew up and where his passions come from, where where
- 1:41:16Speaker 7: they spawned from, why why he loves fishing, why he
- 1:41:18Speaker 7: loves hunting, And then that that move to town is
- 1:41:23Speaker 7: is kind of been a been a common theme and
- 1:41:26Speaker 7: and and and but like and that's what I said,
- 1:41:28Speaker 7: Like there's common similarities with these stories coming out of
- 1:41:32Speaker 7: your journey, but they're all so different, you know. And
- 1:41:35Speaker 7: and then the back half of that podcast usually is
- 1:41:37Speaker 7: about their time in town and and how their ten
- 1:41:40Speaker 7: year process or their two year process, or the story
- 1:41:44Speaker 7: about the best story they've got behind a single, their
- 1:41:46Speaker 7: first single, or what it felt like sitting in a
- 1:41:48Speaker 7: parking lot here in your song on the radio for
- 1:41:49Speaker 7: the first time and crying your eyes out and then
- 1:41:51Speaker 7: calling everybody in your phone, you know, to to congratulate
- 1:41:55Speaker 7: you or whatever you know, it's it's it's really like
- 1:41:58Speaker 7: it's a backdrop in a in a in a lining,
- 1:42:00Speaker 7: the curtain open to see behind the doors of what
- 1:42:04Speaker 7: goes on in Nashville on a day to day basis.
- 1:42:06Speaker 6: And usually the trouble we've been having not trouble, but
- 1:42:09Speaker 6: the thing we've been running into is people get on
- 1:42:11Speaker 6: here and all they want to talk about is hunting,
- 1:42:14Speaker 6: and we have to.
- 1:42:15Speaker 2: Go, Okay, let's move it, so you move to town,
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: you know? Anyway? About this book?
- 1:42:19Speaker 6: Man, I've been chasing him for three years and he's
- 1:42:21Speaker 6: hidden on you know, which makes it a little bit.
- 1:42:23Speaker 2: My appetite to talk about writing is I'll talk about
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: writing now and then same not not excited about that subject.
- 1:42:30Speaker 6: Nope, been doing it a minute. And once you get
- 1:42:33Speaker 6: to that point, and I understand people want to know
- 1:42:36Speaker 6: about it, you know, but I even feel like we
- 1:42:39Speaker 6: talked about it too long on this podcast already the
- 1:42:42Speaker 6: ten year town.
- 1:42:43Speaker 5: Wait, you guys, you got to talk about the one
- 1:42:46Speaker 5: that got away that segment.
- 1:42:48Speaker 6: Didn't you?
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: Who was?
- 1:42:49Speaker 6: Who was?
- 1:42:51Speaker 7: You'll have a good that's become a that's become a thing.
- 1:42:54Speaker 6: You'll probably explain it too much, but you have a
- 1:42:56Speaker 6: good idea.
- 1:42:57Speaker 4: That's become a thing we do. At the end of
- 1:42:58Speaker 4: the podcast, we asked to questions.
- 1:43:00Speaker 7: We asked the artists or songwriter whoever we're interviewing, what
- 1:43:03Speaker 7: their favorite, what they think their favorite, and we kind
- 1:43:06Speaker 7: of we kind of phrase it differently.
- 1:43:08Speaker 2: I guess it.
- 1:43:10Speaker 7: I just burped on microphone what your favorite country song
- 1:43:14Speaker 7: is or what you think is the best written country song.
- 1:43:18Speaker 7: And so we've gotten all across the you know, we've
- 1:43:20Speaker 7: gotten and it's not even country songs, is it?
- 1:43:22Speaker 4: Or is it country songs?
- 1:43:23Speaker 3: We've kept country songs.
- 1:43:26Speaker 7: We do that, and then we do yeah, a thing
- 1:43:28Speaker 7: called the one that Got Away, and we tell them
- 1:43:30Speaker 7: it could be a girl, it could be most of
- 1:43:32Speaker 7: them are married or a guy. You know, if it's
- 1:43:35Speaker 7: a female that we have on but most of them
- 1:43:37Speaker 7: a married. Never to touch that subject, but it's usually
- 1:43:40Speaker 7: a deer, a fish, or you know, something like that.
- 1:43:43Speaker 6: Uh.
- 1:43:43Speaker 7: And that's that's a That's a really cool part because
- 1:43:45Speaker 7: we kind of go into it in an unexpected way
- 1:43:48Speaker 7: where it kind of catches them off guard and they all,
- 1:43:50Speaker 7: you know, tell an.
- 1:43:51Speaker 6: Interesting and sometimes it catches them off guard because we
- 1:43:53Speaker 6: don't tell them we're going.
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: To do it. We're like, oh, by the way, Uh,
- 1:43:57Speaker 2: you guys talked about ten year town. Where you at
- 1:44:02Speaker 2: on the tenure cycle? What happens in ten years is
- 1:44:04Speaker 2: up everything? You mean, it's all done.
- 1:44:07Speaker 6: You just buy ground and don't let anybody hunt it.
- 1:44:09Speaker 2: Oh, so that's that's on the ten years at I
- 1:44:10Speaker 2: mean for some of us, where are you at on
- 1:44:12Speaker 2: the ten year cycle? You gotta be through. But I'm still.
- 1:44:17Speaker 7: On the I'm still on the bottom side of ten
- 1:44:21Speaker 7: my Yeah it was. I mean I moved sneaking up
- 1:44:23Speaker 7: on them.
- 1:44:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm getting there because I moved to town.
- 1:44:24Speaker 6: Only a couple of years behind me. Yeah.
- 1:44:26Speaker 7: I actually think I'm at nine because I moved to
- 1:44:29Speaker 7: town two thousand. Like, got to town doing trying to
- 1:44:32Speaker 7: you know, I was moving furniture in the day and
- 1:44:35Speaker 7: then writing songs at night, trying to grind and and
- 1:44:38Speaker 7: I guess that was twenty fifteen was and then I
- 1:44:40Speaker 7: got my first publishing deal in two thousand and six.
- 1:44:42Speaker 6: But I'm gonna say something that early season grind is
- 1:44:46Speaker 6: what is what deepens that well you're talking about I mean,
- 1:44:50Speaker 6: not to talk about how hard we had it or
- 1:44:51Speaker 6: how bad we had it, because we we found a
- 1:44:53Speaker 6: way to make it work. I died of deer meat
- 1:44:56Speaker 6: and crappie ain't too bad, honestly. I mean it is
- 1:44:59Speaker 6: when you eat with Delmonti corn six nights a week.
- 1:45:02Speaker 7: But yeah, Tibet, you can also get twelve rolls at
- 1:45:05Speaker 7: cracker barrel.
- 1:45:06Speaker 6: I don't know if biscuits.
- 1:45:08Speaker 7: We used to just just take four dollars, go to
- 1:45:12Speaker 7: the cracker barrel. We lived from fourteen biscuits, bring them back,
- 1:45:16Speaker 7: jelly them jokers, and eat it. We'd eat deer eating
- 1:45:19Speaker 7: biscuit like every morning until we ran.
- 1:45:21Speaker 2: We got some sick of those things.
- 1:45:23Speaker 6: Man, and uh we I mean you have to have
- 1:45:28Speaker 6: the hustle too, Like it's not just moving here and
- 1:45:31Speaker 6: waiting ten years and then all of a sudden you
- 1:45:32Speaker 6: can have a little Biscus says that you've got to
- 1:45:34Speaker 6: be applying major hustle to this thing. My my hustle
- 1:45:39Speaker 6: was I worked at a moving company, and then I
- 1:45:44Speaker 6: did that for a long time. I had a meeting
- 1:45:46Speaker 6: with a guy up here who was in the publishing business.
- 1:45:48Speaker 6: I saw softball bats leaning in the corner of his office.
- 1:45:52Speaker 6: So on my way out of that office, I said, hey, man,
- 1:45:55Speaker 6: where does he play softball at the lady at the
- 1:45:58Speaker 6: front told me, I looked into that place. I got
- 1:46:01Speaker 6: a job umpiring at those softball fields. So I would
- 1:46:04Speaker 6: work in the box truck during the day, I would change.
- 1:46:07Speaker 6: I would go in the back of the back box truck,
- 1:46:09Speaker 6: changing my umpire and outfit go work an umpire gig
- 1:46:12Speaker 6: until about eleven and one night I was I had
- 1:46:15Speaker 6: worked there and I ran into him. He was like,
- 1:46:16Speaker 6: what are you doing out here? What are you talking about? Man,
- 1:46:18Speaker 6: I'm hustling, dude, I'm trying to pay my bills. And
- 1:46:21Speaker 6: he was like, but don't you work, but you told
- 1:46:22Speaker 6: me you worked on a box truck. I was like, yeah,
- 1:46:24Speaker 6: I work on a box truck in my umpire. He
- 1:46:26Speaker 6: was like, man, if somebody's hustling that hard, I got
- 1:46:28Speaker 6: time for him, come see me. Went so on really
- 1:46:31Speaker 6: went and sawing cutting it. He said, I need five
- 1:46:33Speaker 6: demos of these songs. I borrowed five hundred dollars for
- 1:46:35Speaker 6: my sister and seven fifty for my granddad RP Days
- 1:46:39Speaker 6: pudd You know what I'm saying, appreciation less appreciation, And
- 1:46:42Speaker 6: I went and cut demos with my band. I took
- 1:46:44Speaker 6: him to him, he held him nine months. And in
- 1:46:48Speaker 6: those nine months, I had my phone on a charger.
- 1:46:50Speaker 6: Every single day I would look. I was constantly the
- 1:46:54Speaker 6: anxiety that was living in my gut. Knowing he had
- 1:46:56Speaker 6: those fine songs and we're about to make a decision
- 1:46:58Speaker 6: on him was like, I mean, like having coals. I mean,
- 1:47:02Speaker 6: I was just my stomach. I was in nots for
- 1:47:04Speaker 6: nine months. He finally calls back. It's like, hey man,
- 1:47:07Speaker 6: we're ready to talk to you about a deal after
- 1:47:08Speaker 6: nine months. And that is how every day that that happens,
- 1:47:13Speaker 6: will that well, it's just going deeper and deeper and deeper.
- 1:47:16Speaker 6: And now when somebody comes to town and they go,
- 1:47:18Speaker 6: hey man, I'm just in a rough spot man, Like
- 1:47:21Speaker 6: I want this music stuff to work, but I got
- 1:47:24Speaker 6: stuff I want to do at home, and I'm missing
- 1:47:25Speaker 6: Deer season because I'm out here grinding playing to thirty
- 1:47:29Speaker 6: people that don't care about my music. I can go,
- 1:47:31Speaker 6: I know exactly what you're talking about. How about this idea?
- 1:47:35Speaker 6: Does this hit?
- 1:47:35Speaker 2: You?
- 1:47:36Speaker 6: Absolutely? Tell me some stuff about what you're doing, and
- 1:47:39Speaker 6: then we find a way to construct something marketable out
- 1:47:44Speaker 6: of what out of slash person slash personal. And that's
- 1:47:49Speaker 6: what I think people get the misconception about us as
- 1:47:51Speaker 6: commercial writers. They think we're just up here faking everything.
- 1:47:54Speaker 6: It's not that. It's finding a way to make your
- 1:47:57Speaker 6: story relatable to a common listener, as well as making
- 1:48:01Speaker 6: it wrong.
- 1:48:02Speaker 2: But you're selling your struggles to other people, man, which
- 1:48:05Speaker 2: has got to hurt down.
- 1:48:06Speaker 6: Then at the beginning, a little what's the check comes
- 1:48:12Speaker 6: in doesn't hurt that.
- 1:48:12Speaker 2: It's a little bit of pride when uh, just a
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: final thought, when you're talking about the going to the
- 1:48:18Speaker 2: cracker breath, get the biscuits. When when I enrolled at
- 1:48:21Speaker 2: Lakespeare State University, in your little enrollment packet was this
- 1:48:25Speaker 2: fifty percent off at Taco Bell. Oh baby. So we called.
- 1:48:30Speaker 2: I was my brother Danny, and we called over there
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: and uh, We're like, hey, is there a is that
- 1:48:35Speaker 2: a limit? We all know? And I said, can you?
- 1:48:39Speaker 2: And so we ordered fifty soft tacos and fifty bean britles.
- 1:48:42Speaker 2: We said, just don't put any lettuce in there, and
- 1:48:44Speaker 2: I said, you come by and pick them up tomorrow.
- 1:48:45Speaker 2: So we went down there, put them in a freezer.
- 1:48:50Speaker 2: We would be going hunting in the morning or whatever.
- 1:48:53Speaker 2: We'd always take those out of the freezer and set
- 1:48:55Speaker 2: them up in the turn the heater on. Oh yeah,
- 1:48:58Speaker 2: man on the windshield and Layman, that little cracking too.
- 1:49:02Speaker 6: Bad honestly them.
- 1:49:05Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not really too bad. Yeah, I'm so far
- 1:49:09Speaker 2: from that now, But you're right, stuff madters Man.
- 1:49:11Speaker 6: Yeah, we we. I think I think it's endless. I
- 1:49:16Speaker 6: think there. I don't think it'll ever run dry, just
- 1:49:18Speaker 6: based upon yeah, the work we put it to get
- 1:49:22Speaker 6: to this place, you know.
- 1:49:23Speaker 4: Yeah, and not saying that we live, but the life
- 1:49:26Speaker 4: we live man.
- 1:49:26Speaker 7: You know, I think that will continues to grow deeper
- 1:49:29Speaker 7: because we're having kids and and and we're we're teaching
- 1:49:32Speaker 7: our kids how to hunt and thinking about the days
- 1:49:34Speaker 7: and of getting to you know, bring them on our
- 1:49:38Speaker 7: land that we don't take anybody on and letting them
- 1:49:41Speaker 7: shoot deer and.
- 1:49:41Speaker 2: They'll they'll maybe get a lease or something.
- 1:49:45Speaker 8: If a big buck is on camera and Ben's old
- 1:49:48Speaker 8: enough to hunt, we've already touched.
- 1:49:52Speaker 6: He's gonna, I mean. And that's part of the reason
- 1:49:54Speaker 6: I locked it up was for my kids.
- 1:49:56Speaker 2: To be able to do that for sure. All right,
- 1:49:58Speaker 2: ladies and gentlemen, Really not a bad guy.
