- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. Great to have your company.
- 0:15Welcome to a new week. It is Monday, it is the 20th of
- 0:20November, and boy are we in the back half of things getting
- 0:24serious heading into the crazy season.
- 0:27I hope your life hasn't gone completely upside down just yet.
- 0:30Maybe you've even got a night or two free this week, but boy, it
- 0:34starts to hot up with end of year functions for this and
- 0:37that. And boy, throw some kids and
- 0:39school function in there and it's a busy, busy time.
- 0:43But it is all good stuff. And Speaking of good stuff,
- 0:47that's not a very neat segue, but we're just going to roll
- 0:50with it. Thank you so much.
- 0:51We are moving forward in the book of Isaiah, really entering
- 0:56into the last couple of sections, this section.
- 1:00This is still while God's people are in exile.
- 1:03They have done the wrong thing. And the consequence of that as
- 1:07God has dragged them out of the promised land, far away into
- 1:11Babylon under the rule of the Babylonians.
- 1:14And the last couple of weeks we've heard God speak words of
- 1:17comfort, but he's still been saying you guys, you guys have
- 1:21really been stubborn, stiff necked people, and This is why
- 1:24you're here. But I will take down the
- 1:27Babylonians and I will remain faithful to you.
- 1:31But now we enter the next phase this week and next, where really
- 1:36God talks about the fact that he is going to restore them.
- 1:39He is going to restore their homeland and that is full of
- 1:45hope as these poor people far away are wondering whether God
- 1:49is ever, ever going to remember them.
- 1:51Yes, they did the wrong thing. Yes, he will be faithful, but
- 1:54what is that going to look like? So as we travel forward a few
- 1:57thousand years, here we are, Here we are living in a very
- 2:01different part of the world, a very different time, but still
- 2:04we have this faithful God. So as we hear these words spoken
- 2:07to these people in exile long ago, we can hear God speaking to
- 2:12us through this prophet, Speaking of his faithfulness and
- 2:15that he will restore the promises of where we're going to
- 2:19live with him. It's a beautiful section, so
- 2:22join me as we read together. Isaiah, chapter 49.
- 2:37Listen to me, all you in distant lands.
- 2:41Pay attention, you who are far away.
- 2:43The Lord called me before my birth.
- 2:47From within the womb He called me by name.
- 2:50He made my words of judgement as sharp as a sword.
- 2:54He has hidden me in the shadow of his hand.
- 2:57I'm like a sharp arrow in his quiver, he said to me.
- 3:01You are my servant, Israel, and you will bring me glory, I
- 3:07replied. But my work seems so useless.
- 3:11I've spent my strength for nothing and to no purpose, yet I
- 3:15leave it all in the Lord's hand. I will trust God for my reward.
- 3:21And now the Lord speaks the one who formed me in my mother's
- 3:25womb to be his servant, who commissioned me to bring Israel
- 3:29back to him. The Lord has honoured me and my
- 3:33God has given me strength. He says You will do more than
- 3:38restore the people of Israel to me.
- 3:40I will make you a light to the Gentiles, and you will bring my
- 3:44salvation to the ends of the earth.
- 3:47The Lord, the Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel says to the one
- 3:52who was despised and rejected by the nations, to the one who was
- 3:55the servant of rulers. Kings will stand at attention
- 4:00when you pass by. Princess will also bow low
- 4:05because of the Lord, the faithful one, the Holy One of
- 4:09Israel, who has chosen you. This is what the Lord says.
- 4:15At just the right time. I will respond to you on the day
- 4:19of salvation. I will help you.
- 4:22I will protect you and give you to the people as my covenant
- 4:26with them. Through you I will re establish
- 4:30the land of Israel and assign it to its own people.
- 4:34Again I will say to the prisoners come out in freedom,
- 4:39and to those in darkness come into the light.
- 4:43They will be my sheep, grazing in green pastures and on hills
- 4:48that were previously bare. They will neither hunger nor
- 4:52thirst. The searing sun will not reach
- 4:55them anymore. For the Lord in His mercy will
- 4:58lead them. He will lead them beside cool
- 5:01waters. And I will make my mountains
- 5:04into level paths for them. The highways will be raised
- 5:08above the valleys. See, my people will return from
- 5:13far away from lands to the north and West, and from as far South
- 5:18as Egypt. Sing for joy, O heavens,
- 5:22rejoice, O earth burst into song, O mountains, For the Lord
- 5:27has comforted his people and will have compassion on them in
- 5:31their suffering. Yes, Jerusalem says the Lord has
- 5:35deserted us. The Lord has forgotten us.
- 5:38Never can a mother forget her nursing child, can she feel no
- 5:44love for the child she has borne.
- 5:46But even if that were possible, I will not forget.
- 5:49You see, I have written your name on the palm of my hands.
- 5:55Always in my mind is a picture of Jerusalem's walls and ruins.
- 6:00Soon your descendants will come back and all who are trying to
- 6:04destroy you will go away. Look around you and see, for all
- 6:09your children will come back to you as surely as I live, says
- 6:15the Lord. They will be like jewels or
- 6:18bridal ornaments for you to display.
- 6:21Even the most desolate parts of your abandoned land will soon be
- 6:25crowded with your people. Your enemies who enslaved you
- 6:29will be far away. The generations born in exile
- 6:33will return and say we need more room.
- 6:36It's crowded here. Then you will think to yourself,
- 6:40who has given me all these descendants, For most of my
- 6:43children were killed, and the rest were carried away into
- 6:46exile. I was left here all alone.
- 6:50Where did all these people come from?
- 6:52Who bore these children? Who raised them for me?
- 6:56This is what the Sovereign Lord says.
- 6:59See, I will give a signal to the godless nations.
- 7:04They will carry your little sons back to you in their arms.
- 7:08They will bring your daughters on their shoulders.
- 7:11Kings and Queens will serve you and care for all your needs.
- 7:15They will bow to the earth before you and lick the dust
- 7:19from your feet. Then you will know that I am the
- 7:23Lord. Those who trust in me will never
- 7:26be put to shame. Who can snatch the plunder of
- 7:30war from the hands of a warrior who can demand that a tyrant
- 7:34lets his captives go. But the Lord says the captives
- 7:39of warriors will be released, and the plunder of tyrants will
- 7:43be retrieved. For I will fight those who fight
- 7:47you, and I will save your children.
- 7:50I will feed your enemies with their own flesh.
- 7:53They will be drunk with rivers of their own blood.
- 7:56All the world will know that I, the Lord am your saviour and
- 8:02your Redeemer, the mighty one of Israel.
- 8:17Your ways are so far beyond anything that we can fathom.
- 8:22My Lord, Your plans stretch for generations and generations.
- 8:28And as we get caught up in today and this week and this month, if
- 8:33we're broad minded, we can feel frustrated and like you've
- 8:39forgotten us. We hear these words spoken
- 8:43through your prophet long ago that you do not forsake your
- 8:47chosen people. You write our names on the palms
- 8:52of your hands and you deliver us.
- 8:57And Father, we know that you have already delivered us.
- 9:00You have given us Jesus. You have won that victory over
- 9:04sin and death so that we can be with you.
- 9:08You are magnificent and you are victorious through history.
- 9:15Help us remember that. Help us stand firm in the
- 9:19surefire knowledge of who you are and what you have done for
- 9:22us and who we are in you. We just praise you, our mighty
- 9:29God, and it's in the saving name of your son Jesus that we pray.
- 9:35Amen. Play song.
