- 0:02Happy Sunday morning, everybody. King Louie, look at it.
- 0:08He's looking good. Man.
- 0:11Oh man. It has rained 40 days and 40
- 0:13nights here in Saint Louis and I think it's finally over.
- 0:17If it if it is finally over. We run the Sonoco Dirt car this
- 0:23Friday at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, IL and then of
- 0:27course, Saturday with the World of Outlaw Sprint Cars right here
- 0:33in Pevely, Missouri at Federated Auto Parts Raceway.
- 0:36So come watch me race next week Friday night in Granite City, IL
- 0:41and Saturday night with the World of Outlaw Sprint Cars.
- 0:45There'll be two divisions, World of Outlaw Sprint Cars and R
- 0:49Modifieds. All right, let's get right to
- 0:53it. Controversy, controversy Down in
- 0:58Darlington, our most famous driver, Chase Elliott.
- 1:08Chase says that the throwback weekend, you know where
- 1:15everybody plays part. You know you got what do you
- 1:19got? You got Joey Logano pretending
- 1:22he is Kale Yarborough this weekend.
- 1:27Joey Logano's car looks good. It looks like the number 11
- 1:31Holly Farms car. I think Josh Berry is.
- 1:38What is it Jim Clark? The Formula One car you got fans
- 1:44running all around with with their legendary jackets.
- 1:51You got Larry McReynolds with his original Davy Allison, you
- 1:57know, Haviland shirt on so you can see where you know this
- 2:03started years ago. Now respond right here.
- 2:06Play part in the conversation. How many years has the throwback
- 2:12weekend at Darlington? How many years has it been going
- 2:14on? Seems to me like maybe 10, eight
- 2:18to 10, something like that. This was a wonderful idea.
- 2:23This was it was definitely a gimmick, but there's nothing
- 2:28wrong with gimmicks. I think sometimes people confuse
- 2:32the word gimmick with advertising.
- 2:35It's no different than going to your ballpark, you're bait.
- 2:38Let's say it, you know it's baseball time right now, right?
- 2:41They got bobble head night. That's a gimmick.
- 2:44Bobble head night is a gimmick. You get a free bat.
- 2:49That's a gimmick. But it's also, it's really
- 2:53called advertising. It's called advertising.
- 2:56So the throwback weekend at Darlington is really
- 3:00advertising. It's meant for people to have
- 3:03fun, get more people there, more people to watch, and in return
- 3:08make the sport better and everybody make more money, more
- 3:11money. We want more people at the
- 3:13racetrack. So they feel like if it's kind
- 3:16of like Halloween, right? Throwback weekend is Halloween.
- 3:20You're dressing up, you're painting your car as somebody
- 3:23you're not, you're not that person, but you're pretending it
- 3:27is. And it's a lot of fun.
- 3:31Now, I believe now you can respond right here.
- 3:33I believe it was one of my my older PR people that started
- 3:38this. I think it was Chip, was it Chip
- 3:42Wiles? Chip Wiles was the president
- 3:45down there at at Darlington for quite a while.
- 3:49What was it, Chip, that started that respond right here.
- 3:52Somebody at NASCAR is watching this.
- 3:54Whose idea was it? All right, so, you know, I come
- 4:01up with this saying the big story in the garage area is our
- 4:04most popular driver. Has it any listen?
- 4:08It's good content. So they're sitting there and
- 4:11they're interviewing Chase Elliot and they go Chase, you
- 4:15know, your car for this week and that.
- 4:17And he goes Chase Elliott. I think he answers a question.
- 4:23Maybe it wasn't Chase. Maybe it was a you know what I
- 4:26saw is just Chase answering a question.
- 4:29I'm sure you've seen the talk on social media on at the throwback
- 4:32weekend has lost its luster. I'm curious on where you stand
- 4:36on that. Do you feel like this weekend
- 4:37has lost its luster overtime? I thought it lost it about four
- 4:41or five years ago, so I was way too early to that conversation,
- 4:45I think. But.
- 4:47Not to be a downer, but I, you know, look, we're, we're and I,
- 4:50I joked about this before, you know, years ago, but like, if we
- 4:55kept going down the road, we're going to be throwing it back to
- 4:56me in like 2018. So like, you know, at some point
- 5:01I think we got a chill on it a little bit.
- 5:05I think we've, I think we've rode the horse to death and we
- 5:09tend to do that a little bit too much.
- 5:12Chase Elliott says this. It has wore its welcome out.
- 5:17In other words, he said pretty soon a throwback weekend will be
- 5:21Chase Elliott's 2018 car. It's kind of funny.
- 5:27And then then, you know, then everybody you know, listen, you
- 5:32know, if somebody else would have mentioned that, it wouldn't
- 5:36have been anything but our most popular driver.
- 5:38How many how many most popular drivers in a row is Chase
- 5:42Elliott won? His is it 10 years?
- 5:45Is Chase Elliott the most popular driver for the last 10
- 5:49years? Respond right here.
- 5:51How many most popular drivers in a row has Chase Elliott won?
- 5:56So anyway, because Chase Elliott said it's warts, welcome out.
- 5:59It ricochets throughout the garage area.
- 6:03Danny Hamlin brings up a good point.
- 6:05How's the calculus change for team owners when you're trying
- 6:09to balance partnerships with changing the colors, changing
- 6:13the schemes, logo, stuff like that for the throwback weekend?
- 6:16Yeah, I mean, I think it sounds good in theory, but, you know,
- 6:19truthfully, these these guys are trying to find a, you know,
- 6:23reason to, you know, get a return on their investment.
- 6:26And so when you kind of change their their logo or maybe you
- 6:30change other colors and stuff, it doesn't really line up with
- 6:33what they want. So it's just sponsor driven
- 6:37sport. What do you want?
- 6:38What do you want me to say? I don't know what's out.
- 6:40There's nothing else to it. He said, listen, I think it's
- 6:44wonderful. I think throwback weekends
- 6:47wonderful, but not everybody can play part.
- 6:50You all are forgetting that like Progressive Insurance is paying
- 6:54$600,000 per race. Say it with me.
- 7:00Say it with me. You didn't know that whatever it
- 7:04is, 400,500 thousand. Listen, it's not anything less
- 7:08than 400,000 per race. So if your sponsor is paying
- 7:15$600,000 race, we're not pretending it's Halloween, OK?
- 7:22We're going to make, we're going to make sure Progressive gets
- 7:24the real logo on there because they got to answer, you know,
- 7:28you don't want to change everything up and, and, and, and
- 7:30people going, who the hell is that?
- 7:33It says progressive on it, but it, it looks like Mario
- 7:37Andretti's car from 1963, you know, but, but a lot of people
- 7:42don't know that. And then another thing we're
- 7:44dealing with is a generation gap.
- 7:47Some of us old people, you know, I'm 61 years old.
- 7:50I, I can tell you whose car's who, but somebody 40 years old
- 7:54right now might, they'd go, who the hell is that?
- 7:57So although it's fun to a lot of older people, you know, you look
- 8:02OK, Chase Elliot, let's take example.
- 8:04Super young. How old's Chase?
- 8:07He's not 30. What is he?
- 8:092425 S Chase might not even know who some of these drivers are.
- 8:15But then Brad Keselowski, he might know because Brad's
- 8:18getting of age now. Brad is getting of age.
- 8:21Brad Keselowski. And right there, Brad
- 8:24Keselowski, he's very smart. So Danny Hamlin says, hey,
- 8:29listen, I think it's wonderful, but not everybody can play
- 8:32along. OK, So we heard what Denny said.
- 8:34Now Brad Keselowski, he says, hey, it's not all about us.
- 8:39It's not all about the drivers. You look in the grandstands and
- 8:43the fans are pretending it's Halloween.
- 8:46The fans got their old gear on and they love it.
- 8:51So respond right here, everybody.
- 8:53I told you everything. I think you figured it all out
- 8:56it it started out as bobblehead day.
- 9:00It started out as bat day, right?
- 9:04Hey, it's throwback weekend at Darlington.
- 9:06And now, 10 years later, we're doing the same thing.
- 9:11I don't think it's hurting anybody.
- 9:14My opinion is it's not hurting anybody.
- 9:17Just keep it going. However, if somebody doesn't
- 9:20play along, you cannot get mad at them.
- 9:23OK, I'll meet you all halfway. If Progressive Insurance and
- 9:29let's say, you know, Miller Brewing, you know, let's say
- 9:34they don't want to play along. Well, then you can understand
- 9:38that. But you know, listen, when you
- 9:42think of The Wood Brothers, they love it.
- 9:44The Wood Brothers, they love it. They play along Once again that
- 9:49green car that that Josh Berry is running this week.
- 9:52That's that's that is a tribute to Formula One driver.
- 9:57Did I say it right? Respond right here.
- 9:59Is that Jim Clark the green car? I could be wrong.
- 10:04But anyway, look at this. That's what it's been like.
- 10:09Look at that 12 plus inches of rain in three days down there by
- 10:13Paducah. But we have been we've had every
- 10:17bit of 6/6 to 9 inches. I've been I've dried in a
- 10:21swimming pool twice. All right, everybody, I think I
- 10:25wore this out. As old Larry Mack Reynolds say.
- 10:28I believe I beat this like a dead horse.
- 10:30Respond right here. Do you like throwback weekend at
- 10:35Darlington? Could could you go without it?
- 10:39Do you understand it? Do you like wearing your old
- 10:42jackets and old shirts like old Larry Mack does?
- 10:48How about old Ward Burton this week?
- 10:51Ward Burton, Ward Burton he still looks good.
- 10:54He looks like he could drive him and Jeb over on the Xfinity side
- 10:57got that that hardest call. Ward button got the hardest
- 11:02call, but I've hey, has anybody done Ward Burton's WNBA call?
- 11:09What a WNBA call call run real good.
- 11:12Ward what happened? Where'd a call bust in the
- 11:15flame. That's who we got to get on
- 11:20Kenny Conversation. Ward Burton respond right here.
- 11:24Do you want to see Ward Burton on Kenny Conversation?
- 11:27All right, everybody have a great Sunday and we're going to
- 11:31watch the Cup race. It's going to be a good one.
- 11:33Darlington. The track is too tough to tame
- 11:37the Lady in black. I love Darlington, have a great
- 11:40Sunday.
