- 1:23Dollar cereal and coming up later on will be an episode of Manhunt. But
- 1:32here now is the Picture Postcard Matter, Part five from Hollywood. It's time
- 1:38now for Johnny Dellar authors he can keep our dollar. Oh good, I
- 1:46was away from the disk for a few minutes and just received the message that
- 1:49you call Look. I'm at the little hotel down in the village. You're
- 1:52not planning to move out of the No, no, listen, I want
- 1:55you to do me a favorite. Have you seen Jeffrey Harris see English gentlemen,
- 2:00and keep a sharp eye out for him. Yeah, And the minute
- 2:01he gets back to the end, call me, but don't let him know
- 2:04you're calling me. Plenty. This man named Brunner I've been looking for I've
- 2:10found him all right dead and it looks like his killer is here at this
- 2:15hotel tonight and every weekday night. Bob Bailey in the Transcribed Adventures of the
- 2:25Man with the Action Packed expense account America's Fabulous Freelance Insurance Investigator of Ours,
- 2:30Truly Johnny Dollar. Expense account submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar. Location Clive
- 2:50Box, Switzerland, the Home Office Global Casually Hertford, Connecticut assignment. The
- 2:54picture postcard matter expense account continued. The murder of Grooner meant that I had
- 3:04lost the one solid lead I had on the whole case, unless, of
- 3:07course, I could round up whoever put him away. I'd am ten one
- 3:09dollars to the desk clerk for watching the rear entrance to the hotel in case
- 3:13the killer should try to get out that way. What are you going to
- 3:16do, Johnny, go upstairs and take a look. I'm coming with you.
- 3:20No, no, I'll stay here. I won't. I'm coming with
- 3:22you. All right. I don't have time to argue. Now tell me
- 3:24again just what happened. You realized we were being followed along the street.
- 3:29You decided to wait in at allie, and I was to cut through to
- 3:31the street and go back to the inn. Yeah, yeah, go on.
- 3:36When I got to the street, I heard a man cry out.
- 3:38Then I saw Gruner fart from an upstairs window. He was dead. He
- 3:42fell from a corner room. Yes, that'd be the store over here.
- 3:46Okay, get back against the walls, all right, be careful, Jenny.
- 3:57Empty Maybe one of the other rooms, Jenny, somebody just locked up?
- 4:03Yeah, come on, rum at the end, get back else gone,
- 4:17yeah, oh great, I'll fire escape. Oh you see someone?
- 4:24Just a flash as he disappeared around the corner. Could you recognize it?
- 4:27It was much light, but it looked like the big boy who jumped me
- 4:29back in Zurich. Then it was he who killed Gruner. Would be and
- 4:31Gruno was my last lead to those stolen diamonds. You think that man who
- 4:35got the way now has that I don't know if he does, and tries
- 4:39to leave town, inspect the honigas man. I'll pick him upt the railroad
- 4:41station. Well, let's go back to the end. We did, but
- 4:46only because it meant being some place where I could quietly sit down and think,
- 4:50try to put together and make sense out of what meager information I had.
- 4:55But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I
- 4:57was stimy. More coffee, Johnny, No, no, thanks, No,
- 5:03what's the matter, Jenny, Oh what's the matter is I'm brit The
- 5:08stolen diamonds, the stolen diamonds. Unless I can figure out the meaning of
- 5:13those picture postcards, Grooner sent a Sebastian. I w looked, and so
- 5:15far I've drawn nothing but big blanks on them postcard. You didn't say anything
- 5:20to me about postcard. I know as well. Look you may as well
- 5:25know it right now. You're about my last hope. You claim you weren't
- 5:29involved in any of this, that you want to help me. Oh yes,
- 5:30Johnny, and I mean it. Okay, here's your chance to prove
- 5:33it. How take a look at these postcards. They're all addressed to your
- 5:38dead pal Sebastian sent to him by Grooner. That's right. A picture of
- 5:44the cly back in here and the picture of the ski hut on the ridge.
- 5:47Do they mean anything to you? Well, you're staying here at the
- 5:51inn, and I have seen the ski hut on the ridge beyond that nothing
- 5:57Yeah, sure, yes, But is it all about Johnny the postcards?
- 6:01I mean, Sebastian and Groooner were together in the diamond robbery back and Zurich.
- 6:05Then they split up. Grooner hid the diamonds and sent these postcards to
- 6:09Sebastian. They're supposed to be the key to the location of the diamonds.
- 6:13Now both Sebastian and Grooner ragid, which means that if I can't figure out
- 6:17this key, I'll probably never recover those stones. You told me this morning
- 6:20you thought there were others after the diamonds. Yeah, and they probably knocked
- 6:25off Sebastian and Grooner trying to get them. These postcards, the inn and
- 6:30the ski hut. Have you searched this inn as well as I could and
- 6:33the ski hut? When I got there the place of in ransacked, somebody
- 6:38beat me to it. I saw Jeffrey Harris in the vicinity on my way
- 6:42up to the hut. The Englishman. Yeah, he could be my boy.
- 6:46Maybe whoever knocked off Gruner in the village was working for him. Maybe
- 6:48mister Harris already has the diamonds in. I hope to find out if and
- 6:53when he comes back here at the Inn. I somehow doubt that he's found
- 6:57them, though they went after Grooner after the ski Hut was ransacked, and
- 7:00that would indicate they are still looking for them. Yes, the Inn and
- 7:04the ski Hut. Wait, Johnny, perhaps the diamonds are somewhere on a
- 7:10line between the two places. I thought of that, but it doesn't work.
- 7:13You can't see the ski hut from here. At the end. A
- 7:15ridge cuts it off, and we're on a line between the two. You're
- 7:17about five miles apart. I wonder what Jeffrey Harris just coming in see you
- 7:24later? Wa. Well, well it's the Dollar Chap. Yeah, that's
- 7:28right, Harris, the Dollar Chap. Enjoying your stair at climbacker man.
- 7:31Well, let's say it's been interesting, delightful place earlier, a little bit
- 7:34of a mountain climber, you know, yeah, I know, oh you
- 7:38do. I didn't think my reputation spread that much. Oh, I'm really
- 7:42does an amateur, but it's great fun. You did some climbing today,
- 7:46I believe. Yes, a matter of fact, I did splendid pace of
- 7:47rock up there. It gave me quite a workout. And you were down
- 7:50in the village this evening there is I say, oh, Jap, you
- 7:54seem to be rather an inquisitive sort. Why all the questions are? Well,
- 7:58this morning I got shot at up on the ridge. This evening,
- 8:01a man was murdered in the village. Both times you were in the vicinity,
- 8:07they were Oh now, look here, Dollar, let's not be absurd,
- 8:09right, I'm sorry that someone was potting away to this morning, but
- 8:11I assure you I had nothing to do with it, and I didn't even
- 8:13know about the murder and the village. Plus the fact you've been pretty interested
- 8:18in me ever since I arrived here. At the end, Yes, but
- 8:20I've explained all that. I thought a person who might be my old friend
- 8:22Bunny Dollar from London. Look, let's quit talking about old Bunny Dollar and
- 8:26start talking about that rifle of yours with a telescopic sight. If we don't
- 8:30be ridiculous, Oh, by, I don't have any right for Well,
- 8:31I just happen to have found one in your closet today. I say you
- 8:35are a snooper, aren't you? But you must have gotten to the wrong
- 8:37closet. I tell you I don't own a right. It was there,
- 8:39all right, and it was your closet. Well, then somebody left it
- 8:43there by mistake. Now look here, Dollar, No, I haven't the
- 8:45slightest idea what you're driving at. But I assure you I am in no
- 8:48way involved. And I must say I don't care if your attitude or behavior.
- 8:52I think I had you confused with the old bunny. Well you're not
- 8:56in the least like him. We're prowling in my closet. I guess I
- 9:03drew a blank there, Elsa. What did you hear? Dollar, Holado?
- 9:09What else? Ago? I do not know she was sitting there a
- 9:13few minutes ago. Perhaps she went up to her room. Yeah, head,
- 9:16Dollar, is this men you were looking for Goner? I'm not looking
- 9:20for him anymore at all. Like I told you over the phone again,
- 9:22himself killed in the village this evening, I know, And that is what
- 9:26made me think you might be interested in this. Hey, another postcard?
- 9:30What'd you get? It if it arrived today. It was addressed to the
- 9:33men called Sebastian in care of my Inn. That means Gruner didn't know Sebastian
- 9:37was dead. Hey, hey, this could be the missing part of the
- 9:39key. Key A picture of the village square? Does that mean something to
- 9:46you? Her dollar? I'm sure it means something, all right, but
- 9:50I'm not sure what. I went to my room and put the three postcards
- 9:56side by side. The in ski had on the red in the village square.
- 10:01The trouble was, I couldn't be sure this was all there was to
- 10:05the key. Maybe Gruner had planned to send more cars, but he wouldn't
- 10:09be sending any now. Yeah. Yeah, from any point of view,
- 10:13I was getting nowhere. Then I stopped cold point of view. I looked
- 10:18at the cards again. You couldn't see the ski hut from the inn,
- 10:22and you couldn't see the inn from the village. But maybe, just maybe
- 10:26there was some point from which you could see all three. I went downstairs
- 10:31and outside. It was a moonlight night. I started walking slowly toward the
- 10:35village, keeping the in insight behind me. Finally I came to a point
- 10:37in the road where I could see both the inn and the village square in
- 10:41the distance, but I still couldn't see the ski hut. There was a
- 10:43ridge in the way. I started cutting across a field. It looked like
- 10:48a little deserted farm. A shed loomed up in front of me, a
- 10:50small, broken out barn, and then just as I got to the barn,
- 10:54the ski hut on the ridge came into view. I stopped and checked.
- 10:58Yeah, yeah, I could see the end, the village square and
- 11:01the ski hut. And this was the one point from which the scenes on
- 11:03all three postcards were visible. This had to be it. I went inside.
- 11:09The vine was empty except for some straw in one corner. I ran
- 11:13my hands through it and I pulled out a leather case. The moonlight streaming
- 11:18through the broken roof told me I finally found the uncut diamonds. Somebody outside.
- 11:24I froze against the wall in the shadow. He came in and did
- 11:30him get close? Then I dove at him. I gave him a couple
- 11:35of the midsection of cup. I dragged him to a sweet off. Well,
- 11:41my old friend who jumped me back in Zurich. Who are you?
- 11:43Come on? No, no, I am mynn. Your outfit was trying
- 11:48to get the diamonds away from Sebastian boys. When you jumped me in Zurich,
- 11:52you thought I had them. Then you followed me. He had a
- 11:54clibak and you killed Gruner trying to make him talk. Okay, you're working
- 12:00for spell It. You know nobody. I am working alone. Don't give
- 12:03me that. You haven't the brains to mastermind a day like this. Now,
- 12:05who's the boss? I can't open up Anton? Start trying at a
- 12:13stand verse too. Wow, So the little innkeeper is Anton's boss, You
- 12:20stupid fool? What could I do on? I didn't know he had had
- 12:26me approaching one blunder after annother time. I think I get it now at
- 12:28all. It was you who shot at me up at the ridge this morning.
- 12:33Then you planted the rifle in the Englishman's room. I realized after I
- 12:35had missed that perhaps it was just as well. Sure, sure you realized
- 12:41I might be able to help you. You couldn't figure out the location of
- 12:43the stones although you had one of the postcards, but you knew I had
- 12:48the other two and might be able to figure out the three of them.
- 12:50Why not? So you gave me the third card hoping i'd lead you to
- 12:54the diamonds, which you very obligingly did. Yeve me the diamonds dollar,
- 12:58I will take them. Stand back, and aren't you sure you don't think
- 13:03he's really gonna split with you? Do you? Anton? What you meant?
- 13:07You are? Anton? You have served your purpose after all I have
- 13:11done for you. Anton started Ferrauto, who took his eyes off for a
- 13:16second. That's what I was waiting for. I dove at him justice his
- 13:20gun went off. Anton crumpled and after a fist of this faces out Otto
- 13:24did likewise. I knelt down and picked up his gun. All right,
- 13:30o'da. I just told her where you are, but my shoulder, I'm
- 13:33hurt. Don't worry, Anton, there's enough left to talk to the police.
- 13:37And you know I got a hunt. You're gonna be a real cooperative
- 13:39witness. Expense account fourteenth and final item six hundred and seventy eight dollars and
- 13:50fifty cents transportation and Incinetto's home. Total expenses seventeen hundred and twenty three dollars,
- 13:54even remarks, Otto and Anton were turned over to police Inspector Hanninger.
- 14:00The diamonds are in safekeeping about Otto Well Reed is one of the seven Deadly
- 14:05Sins. It sure turned out to be the deadliest one for Otto. How

- 16:17out, buddy, It's believable and fun for the show with Johnny being able
- 16:22to put once he has all three to find the solution and triangulate things.
- 16:29All right, well, now it's time for an episode of Manhunt and the
- 16:33clue of the movie Murder, the clue of the movie Murder. But let
- 16:41do man Hunt. No crime has been committed, yeah, no murder has
- 16:55been done yet, No man Hunt as the gun yees now magic of Worldwide
- 17:07newsrail brings you an international round up of famous personality thank referred to London and
- 17:17he is trying day. I mean those which may readily be expected to honor.
- 17:22It is advantageous now as well as importance to the futureob that we understand
- 17:30England's name and the separation making for man Hunt and the clue of the movie
- 17:57Murder. A whole week without a good murder. He'p igning the fact that
- 18:08I'm alive. They'll be a murder if you want to be around to charve
- 18:11it at my pet. One more word from the owner Robert Chemical, from
- 18:15my laboratory on you and you will disappear. It is not a homicide department
- 18:22because he went to a movie that's fine text page and goes to picture shows
- 18:26and working on it. Rue Peak of the devil and he holen Jim,
- 18:30Oh, that's on your leged mind. Let's mind, he says, plenty's
- 18:33on it. A murder. Huh, but I've viewed this time. A
- 18:37guy named Arthur Anderson feels over poisoned. The doc says, what does he
- 18:41leave us? A dead body and no clue, no subspects. The suspects,
- 18:45he says, two thousands fasfects. Everybody was in the audience at the
- 18:48movie said it. And I wish is that somebody would draw me a picture
- 18:53going how this thing could have happened. You see, the guy was poisoned
- 18:57by something he ate about five hours before he died. The doctor says,
- 19:02only on me what I'll come into my office and get the answers to that's
- 19:06yourself. Okay, I'll be across the hall. Anybody wants to pat you
- 19:14see, groom, I got a guy named John Murdoch in my office.
- 19:17He worked with his anders and he got killed. H secretary of something,
- 19:21right. I don't know what about him, know all about him? He
- 19:23said, he doesn't know anything, and what he does know only makes things
- 19:27more mixed up. And then find out to yourself. Okay, bell Oh,
- 19:33don't get up. My name is Steven Minds Murdoch. You want to
- 19:37know who killed mister Anderson. I suppose well, if it wouldn't put it
- 19:41in too much trouble to tell him. How can I tell you? I
- 19:44don't know. He sold everything I do know to this man here, look
- 19:47groom his acorn. The doctor says that somebody flips Anders be poisoned about five
- 19:52hours before he died. That makes it the bat well about three in the
- 19:56afternoon that he got it. See, mister paradox, what did mister Anderson
- 20:02eat or drink at about three o'clock? I've already told this to the sergeant,
- 20:04but I'll tell you too. I was with mister Anderson every second of
- 20:10the time from noon until he was found dead, and he didn't eat a
- 20:12thing or even take a drink of water all that time. Let's see through
- 20:17the Thing's impossible. Doc says, the guy gets poisoned at three o'clock.
- 20:21This guy says Anderson didn't need anything. Either the doc is crazy or Murdoch
- 20:26here is covering up. What are you trying to hide? My doc?
- 20:29He can eat you though. I look at that Junia boss went from noon
- 20:33until eight o'clock without eating. I do believe in eating dinner. You look,
- 20:38we worked until seven point thirty in the office and we went to a
- 20:41newsreel theater for an hour to relax, and you're going to eat. When
- 20:45it came out, nobody not a soul. And this is getting awful tiresome.
- 20:52Everybody asked the same question. I tell you, mister Anderson didn't either
- 20:56drink anything or see anybody but me all afternoon. And that's that's all I
- 21:00know. That's all he knows. He says, might as well add this
- 21:03to what to know. If nobody else could have been near Anderson to poison
- 21:07them, then you did it. You're out of your mind. Mist the
- 21:08Murdoch. Did mister Anderson have any enemy? Only his partner, me Thomas,
- 21:14fought like mad all the time. And incidentally, yes, you know
- 21:18one of those story books detected. You might be interested in the fact that
- 21:22they had a joint insurance policy that protect the company and that means that if
- 21:26one of the partners dies, the other collect something like that. Where can
- 21:30we find this, lou Thomas. We operates our branch office a couple of
- 21:33hundred miles from here, but you can get any ideas you're getting. You
- 21:37didn't leave that office all day to day. I had to check with him
- 21:40every half hour on a deal, and I talked to him long, just
- 21:42in ten or twelve times. He's afternoon that first right to telephone records from
- 21:47saying, calan, mister murdach is just one thing more give me the home
- 21:52addresses, mister Anderson, will why do you want to know whether so Anderson
- 21:55list grow Come over close in the bell and I'll whispered, okay, a
- 22:00filie Anderson, come drin so I have a fly of the idea, idea
- 22:11something anyway, I don't know exactly hot. How about it up there?
- 22:18Hitting an ant movie thea There was nothing on the screen. Why do I
- 22:23wind up in situation? He said, and that, Yeah, I'm dying
- 22:30to a curiosity. Tell you we've hid an impossible crime at the angle.
- 22:37I sid it here, I have the fame. Okay, he is crying
- 22:48days and goes with me ready, thank you to no is important job.
- 22:59We are just and England day and the reparations we are making. Okay,
- 23:08fast, okay, a friend, it's still a perfect grand I didn't teach
- 23:15an effect what now? But telling the suuk about nobody being near it,
- 23:22and I'll underwrite that myself, but also about its not eating a drinking anymore.
- 23:26So is Murdoch didn't poison and who could have? Somebody only I'll take
- 23:30all that Murdoch didn't do it. The thing's impossible, all right, So
- 23:34it's impossible. We're gonna work you an I pad. We're gonna hop out
- 23:38Anderson's department tomorrow morning and send the day the kind of a lead. I
- 23:42don't you first to say that somebody has finally submitted a murderous pool poof?
- 23:48And now you say we've got to get some kind of a lead pool poof
- 23:52a leading pat. The other thing for me to do is pool. But
- 23:55I'm no fool. I've seen nothing but corresponding for hours. That guy Anderson
- 24:07never threw anything away. He could have thrown everything away as far as Anton
- 24:11turns, Pat, I think of any value put his quads with a cart
- 24:14when well shelby, As the saying goes, Graham, Yes, I get
- 24:18so, as the saying goes, So don't we say wait until I see
- 24:22Anderson's cat is he probably starts little? Yeah? That sounds like me,
- 24:29doesn't it. But I'm always trying to dumb animals. You should know.
- 24:33Well the cat was out la foil when I had heard from all Right,
- 24:37I wait and get out of here. I guess fucking hit rus. What
- 24:42happens? Support over the door? It's right, Anderson letters it to post
- 24:56and through it under the door. That there there when we came in.
- 25:00I have to take a look a letter. H that's the bill phone bill?
- 25:08Oh the letter returned to a partic post who as everybody the post office?
- 25:15Thunder about five or five moster? Okay, what's to date? About
- 25:22two hundred and fifty miles wide? No reason contribut Yeah, you need to
- 25:27say till we're following this routine? Ros are they kid? What's the money?
- 25:34Ten one dollar bills in the car? That says gentlemen to close three
- 25:40fine ten dollars price printed on the circular center. Please took me to thunder
- 25:47and death clos you offered me for sud fine author andersy M. That's a
- 25:53human about you. Well, who say you look at something awful? Unbelievable
- 25:57in my ears? Says only one way to check what I'm thinking and chet
- 26:03that's the whole thing. Logical, Pat, you and I going up the
- 26:06northfolder? Is it post office fox? Five? O five? All right?
- 26:08You mean what the dead chests got to do with it? This may
- 26:11well be pat my pets. This dead tat means the murderer will wind up
- 26:15with a cooked foo, five hours of sand and a post office fox.
- 26:27I look for the postmaster doesn't make the set to agree. I mean somebody
- 26:32else or let it a father five? That's a I beg your pardon.
- 26:37My name is Stephen three three. It's about my partner's just I've told the
- 26:41police all I know I can prove. I was in my office all yesterday
- 26:45afternoon. Yes, I'm pretty sure you will, missus Thomas. Oh,
- 26:48that's right, as Thomas. Is this the letter you just inquired about,
- 26:52mister Thomas, I don't know you lit the name. Oh that's you're writing
- 26:56on the envelope. Well that is prett easy, Yes, jeez. I
- 27:00wanted to show my partner some of my personal offices, whip them, and
- 27:03I wrote them a note and closed itself address envelope. That's it one almoster,
- 27:08Thomas. The first letter had reached through, you would have committed the
- 27:11perfect crime. But unfortunately for you, there was some posted to on it.
- 27:17Because of a little thing like that, you stamped yourself a murderer only
- 27:26an act and desunded Lee Thomas from actually getting away with murder. Well,
- 27:29now that he's been said, tell what happened all of it? Okay?
- 27:32Lee Thomas wrote Anderson a letter offering him a terrific prog and in the death
- 27:36clock and talent, he enclosed his self addressed envelope, knowing Anderson would use
- 27:40it. Were accepting me off, Oh the one we found in Anderson's department.
- 27:41Yes, let's take it easier ahead of me pack Now. The flap
- 27:45on that repair envelope was full of poison, and when Anderson lifted it was
- 27:48curtain for to see how this could have been the perfect crime, he said
- 27:52it did. If that envelope had been resented, Thomas, you would have
- 27:56had in his possession all evidence of murder. And he couldn't prove a thing,
- 27:59no matter what perfective. But as we know, the envelope was returned
- 28:03to the Anderson apartment because the murderer didn't realize that ten single bills weighed more
- 28:07than one ten dollars. And we of course founded at the Anderson apartment,
- 28:11not really to see whatever poison, Lee Thomas Hughes, much as the looted
- 28:17the mutually and the flat on the envelope wouldn't say feel the tacharotic that need
- 28:23let glue. By the way you're runs tracing a murderers pity envelope and everything.
- 28:33I want to be scared to do this. I ask you a question,
- 28:37Sure, go ahead, okay, truly? Do you want to play
- 28:41Post Office Sydney Welcome back? Well, good to have a Churchill impersonator on
- 28:51hand. I wonder who did that particular role. And since the big things
- 28:55with these cases are the puzzle, I thought this was actually pretty pretty good,
- 29:02though not impossible to solve, though I do wonder with the weight of
- 29:07currency other ten ones would change a lot, but probably would. I'll buy
- 29:14the conclusion unless and untell someone who's a listener who happens to work for the
- 29:18postal service has other information. All right, Well, we continue on with
