- 0:01Speaker 1: Live on Sky News.
- 0:03Speaker 2: This is Sharry Good Evening, A big show coming up.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Anti Semitism explodes on the streets of Melbourne as Albanese's
- 0:13Speaker 2: lack of leadership is on display yet again, which begs
- 0:17Speaker 2: the question is Australia safe for Jews. Senator James Patterson
- 0:22Speaker 2: will join me live shortly. Also tonight, we'll show you
- 0:26Speaker 2: the footage of Aaron Patterson that was examined by the
- 0:29Speaker 2: jury and will discuss the guilty verdict with top lawyer
- 0:32Speaker 2: Justin Quill. The Prime Minister gears up for his fourth
- 0:36Speaker 2: trip to see the Chinese President while failing to secure
- 0:40Speaker 2: even one meeting with Donald Trump. Ray Hadley fires up
- 0:44Speaker 2: this hour plus Nettayahu heads to the White House to
- 0:48Speaker 2: discuss the ceasefire in Gaza and expanding.
- 0:51Speaker 3: The Abraham Accords.
- 0:53Speaker 2: That's all coming up, but first tonight to the weekend
- 0:57Speaker 2: of horror in Melbourne. Synagogue satellite cars torched and inn
- 1:03Speaker 2: Israeli restaurants stormed and families terrorized. This is the violent,
- 1:09Speaker 2: racist country that we're now living in that's increasingly unsafe
- 1:14Speaker 2: for Jewish Australians and we want this would happen over
- 1:18Speaker 2: and over again. We begged for the federal government to
- 1:22Speaker 2: show leadership. We even developed an anti Semitism blueprint to
- 1:27Speaker 2: help solve this crisis at our Sky News Antisemitism Summit.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Yet Albanezi did not adopt a single one of those recommendations.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Perhaps he naively believed if he did nothing, if he
- 1:42Speaker 2: buried his head in the sand, the problem would go away.
- 1:46Speaker 2: But of course it hasn't, and under his watch our
- 1:50Speaker 2: country has irrevocably changed. This is now Australia a violent,
- 1:57Speaker 2: unsafe nation where racism has been allowed to flourish, where
- 2:01Speaker 2: a peaceful, philanthropic, caring community has been demonized and scapegoated
- 2:09Speaker 2: while out of control Palestinian activists are endlessly protected by
- 2:13Speaker 2: the law and the leadership. And we saw on Friday
- 2:18Speaker 2: night at one of Australia's oldest synagogues, the East Melbourne
- 2:21Speaker 2: Hebrew Synagogue.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Jews were the target's Jews.
- 2:26Speaker 2: A man rang the synagogue's doorbell around eight pm twice. Inside,
- 2:31Speaker 2: about twenty Jews were at Shabbat, that's the Friday evening meal.
- 2:36Speaker 2: The Age newspaper reports a thirteen year old was in
- 2:39Speaker 2: the synagogue office and heard the bell through the security monitors.
- 2:44Speaker 2: He reportedly saw a man he didn't recognize and thankfully, thankfully,
- 2:51Speaker 2: he didn't open the door. The man then lit a
- 2:54Speaker 2: petro bomb at the entrance of the synagogue, where it detonated,
- 2:59Speaker 2: and the damage from the bomb wasn't worse only because
- 3:03Speaker 2: the synagogue added extra protection just a few years ago,
- 3:06Speaker 2: including a blastproof reinforced steel security door. The alleged culprit
- 3:12Speaker 2: has now been arrested, Angelo Loris, aged thirty four. He
- 3:17Speaker 2: lives in the Sydney suburb of Toungabby.
- 3:21Speaker 4: The man charged with setting fire to the front of
- 3:23Speaker 4: a Melbourne synagogue is behind bars. Tonight, counter terror police
- 3:27Speaker 4: arrested thirty four year old Angelo Loris, who did not
- 3:31Speaker 4: apply for bail, over the alleged attack.
- 3:35Speaker 2: And then on the same night, a Jewish owned restaurant,
- 3:38Speaker 2: miz Non, in Melbourne's popular Hardware Lane was stormed by
- 3:43Speaker 2: around twenty masked protesters who were chanting death to the IDF.
- 3:48Speaker 2: They terrorized families eating dinner and toppled furniture.
- 3:54Speaker 3: These were those disgraceful scenes.
- 4:09Speaker 2: The genesis of this began a day earlier when social
- 4:12Speaker 2: media accounts demanded a boycott of this restaurant and they
- 4:16Speaker 2: shared the address now as you heard there the protesters
- 4:21Speaker 2: were chanting death to the IDF, a murderous phrase. And
- 4:26Speaker 2: here's where that chance started at the Glastonbury Music Festival.
- 4:32Speaker 5: Stiff to the IDF, the id to the IDF.
- 4:40Speaker 2: I mean, you just can't get your head around it.
- 4:42Speaker 2: A music festival repeating a death chant. It was a
- 4:47Speaker 2: festival just like the one where two hundred and fifty
- 4:50Speaker 2: young people were gunned down, chased and hunted before being murdered,
- 4:56Speaker 2: a massacre at the Nova Music Festival. Apparently forgot it
- 5:00Speaker 2: at Glastonbury and now forgotten in Australia and also in
- 5:07Speaker 2: Melbourne on Friday night, three cars were torched and yet
- 5:10Speaker 2: another anti Semitic incident.
- 5:14Speaker 6: Police are on the hunt for five mask defenders after
- 5:17Speaker 6: a targeted arson attack at a business in Melbourne's northeast.
- 5:21Speaker 6: CCTV capture the group setting fire to three cars and
- 5:24Speaker 6: spray painting slogans on the Greensborough property just before four
- 5:28Speaker 6: am on Saturday, before fleeing on e bikes. It is
- 5:32Speaker 6: believed the business is a weapons company with links to Israel.
- 5:37Speaker 2: We don't know the answer to this, but we need
- 5:39Speaker 2: to know whether those three incidents on the same night
- 5:43Speaker 2: are connected.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Now. You'd think we'd be used to all of this
- 5:47Speaker 3: by now, but we're not.
- 5:50Speaker 2: None of this is new, although the sadness never gets easier.
- 5:55Speaker 2: It's been around six months since arsonists tried to set
- 5:58Speaker 2: allite the newtown S Cinema in Sydney, a preschool completely
- 6:03Speaker 2: destroyed in another fire bombing, while cars and buildings also
- 6:08Speaker 2: torched in Sydney's East. And it's been six months too
- 6:11Speaker 2: since the Adas Israel Synagogue in Melbourne was firebombed. So
- 6:17Speaker 2: you'll mean the first thing that hits you, it's the smell,
- 6:22Speaker 2: it's so strong, and the soot, the police tape. This
- 6:26Speaker 2: shouldn't be what it's like walking into a synagogue country.
- 6:31Speaker 2: And after that attack we heard much the same political
- 6:34Speaker 2: commentary as we have again now this must be condemned,
- 6:39Speaker 2: the full force of the law felt Adisemitism has no
- 6:42Speaker 2: place in Australia.
- 6:43Speaker 3: The same lines, and.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Yet all these months on, still no one has been
- 6:48Speaker 2: caught or arrested for fire bombing the Adas Synagogue. And
- 6:51Speaker 2: these platitudes have become meaningless, their words unmatched by action,
- 6:57Speaker 2: and the protests full of hatred continue you in Melbourne
- 7:00Speaker 2: and Sydney, most weekends, encouraged by angry political rhetoric, as
- 7:06Speaker 2: The Door Foundation's Talie Blickbau writes in The Australian Today,
- 7:11Speaker 2: every week protesters march through the streets of Melbourne calling
- 7:15Speaker 2: for interfada and revolution, and this is amplified online. Who
- 7:20Speaker 2: could be surprised that calls for uprising would lead to
- 7:24Speaker 2: actual uprising? And Jewish leader Mark Leebler makes the same point.
- 7:29Speaker 2: He writes, as long as protests accompanied by chance of
- 7:33Speaker 2: zionus to terrorists, death to the IDF, globalize the Intovada
- 7:38Speaker 2: and river to the Sea continue, violence directed at the
- 7:41Speaker 2: Jewish community and its institutions will follow. And that's why
- 7:47Speaker 2: this angry, hateful, pro Palestinian protest movement is so dangerous.
- 7:52Speaker 2: It's not peaceful expression of political speech, as many.
- 7:57Speaker 3: Try to claim.
- 7:58Speaker 2: It's cultivating and nurturing hatred against Jews. It's excusing and
- 8:03Speaker 2: justifying cruelty and violence. The perpetrators who firearm Jewish institutions
- 8:11Speaker 2: presumably intend to kill, harass, or harm Jews. They are
- 8:17Speaker 2: motivated by their hatred of Israel, a hatred the Albanezi
- 8:22Speaker 2: government perpetuates with its actions and its.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Anti Israel rhetoric.
- 8:27Speaker 2: One Israeli minister made this point formally in an official
- 8:31Speaker 2: letter to Albanizi. He wrote, this alarming climate is unfolding
- 8:36Speaker 2: under your government's watch, and is further legitimized by recent
- 8:40Speaker 2: actions to deny entry to former Israeli minister IoLET Shaked
- 8:45Speaker 2: and pro Israel advocate Hillel Ford. These choices are seen
- 8:50Speaker 2: as discriminatory and embolden those who spread hate. This is
- 8:55Speaker 2: no longer a matter of rising tensions. It is a
- 8:58Speaker 2: test of leadership, and he warns that silence sends a
- 9:04Speaker 2: dangerous message that Jewish safety is negotiable. Now, we told
- 9:11Speaker 2: the Albanezy government of a clear strategy that would help
- 9:15Speaker 2: them tackle anti Semitism. That was the point of our
- 9:20Speaker 2: sky New summit in February, attended by some of the
- 9:24Speaker 2: smartest brains in the country, including Justice Michael Lee, John Howard,
- 9:30Speaker 2: Greg Craven, Holocaust survivors, the Israelian Ambassador to Australia, Mire Maimon,
- 9:38Speaker 2: the Deputy Police Commissioner Dave Hudson, former Treasurer Josh Friedenberg,
- 9:43Speaker 2: and many more, and they spoke and discussed much needed reform.
- 9:49Speaker 7: It is a great moral failing of the leadership of
- 9:52Speaker 7: at least some of our university set. Some students, to
- 9:55Speaker 7: my personal knowledge, are now afraid aid of being identified
- 10:01Speaker 7: by their fellow students.
- 10:02Speaker 8: Has been Jewish at Frosity of the seventh of October
- 10:07Speaker 8: twenty twenty three saw the largest number of Jewish people's
- 10:11Speaker 8: slaughters in the Holocaust. That's the fact that needed more
- 10:14Speaker 8: than general denunci agents.
- 10:18Speaker 2: And through this summit, along with the Executive Council of
- 10:22Speaker 2: Australian Jury, redeveloped fifteen recommendations across national security, education, the
- 10:29Speaker 2: university sector, migration, citizenships, social.
- 10:32Speaker 3: Media and more. And they included.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Declaration of a national emergency on anti Semitism and the
- 10:39Speaker 2: establishment of a Joint counter Terror Task Force. The repeal
- 10:43Speaker 2: of charity status and funding from religious and charitable institutions
- 10:47Speaker 2: if they promote racism or displayed terror symbols. Another one,
- 10:52Speaker 2: the Migration Act should be enforced or amended to ensure
- 10:55Speaker 2: antisemitic conduct is grounds to reject a visa or cal
- 11:00Speaker 2: an existing one. New social media legislation, such as algorithms
- 11:05Speaker 2: regulation laws should be introduced to counter foreign interference. There's
- 11:11Speaker 2: fifteen sensible areas of reform that would have a meaningful
- 11:16Speaker 2: impact in reducing anti Semitism.
- 11:20Speaker 9: We are calling for this plan of action to be
- 11:22Speaker 9: endorsed by both major parties and independent candidates, and for
- 11:26Speaker 9: public institutions in the private sector to work with community
- 11:30Speaker 9: for its implementation.
- 11:33Speaker 2: We did the thoughtful and meaningful work for the Prime Minister.
- 11:37Speaker 2: He didn't have to develop a single policy, yet he
- 11:41Speaker 2: then refused to implement any of our recommendations, not one,
- 11:46Speaker 2: so he's categorically not doing all he can. This is
- 11:51Speaker 2: what the Jewish community has asked for and he's refused
- 11:54Speaker 2: to action it. In fact, Albanezi has failed to comprehensively
- 11:59Speaker 2: address this. He didn't hold a press conference over the
- 12:02Speaker 2: weekend about these attacks in Melbourne and this is not
- 12:06Speaker 2: what leadership looks like. His fellow lifelong pro Palestinian activist
- 12:11Speaker 2: Tony Burke visited the synagogue yesterday with the dumped Jewish
- 12:16Speaker 2: former minister Mark Dreyfus, and at least Tony Burke seemed
- 12:20Speaker 2: to grasp the gravity of the situation.
- 12:25Speaker 10: Arson attacks, the chanting calls for death, other attacks and graffiti,
- 12:35Speaker 10: none of it belonged to Australia, and they were attacks
- 12:39Speaker 10: on Australia.
- 12:42Speaker 3: And this is new.
- 12:43Speaker 2: He now seems to he can see with his own
- 12:46Speaker 2: eyes what we're actually dealing with. But if he truly
- 12:50Speaker 2: wants to end this crisis, then he needs to adopt
- 12:52Speaker 2: our action points from our Antisemitism summit. As you'll recall,
- 12:57Speaker 2: when we held that summit, Mark Dreyfus accused us of
- 13:01Speaker 2: doing it for ratings.
- 13:04Speaker 11: Anti Semitism cannot and must not be weaponized in the
- 13:08Speaker 11: pursuit of votes. It must not be weaponized in the
- 13:12Speaker 11: pursuit of newspaper sales or TV ratings either.
- 13:15Speaker 2: I hope that suggestion wasn't that our newspapers or television
- 13:19Speaker 2: stations are weaponizing this, because we certainly are not.
- 13:22Speaker 3: We are defending our values.
- 13:26Speaker 2: No one who is hurting deeply from this antisemitism crisis
- 13:30Speaker 2: in Australia could possibly make such a crude suggestion. And
- 13:35Speaker 2: that's the problem with the Albanezy government. They believe this
- 13:38Speaker 2: was all confected. They didn't genuinely believe drastic action was
- 13:43Speaker 2: needed despite the multiple firebombings, the arson attacks, the torched
- 13:48Speaker 2: cars and the vandalized officers.
- 13:51Speaker 3: It's enough.
- 13:52Speaker 2: It was enough long ago, and now the Australian Jewish
- 13:55Speaker 2: community can't help. But ask is it still safe to
- 14:00Speaker 2: live here in Australia. When and where will the next
- 14:04Speaker 2: attack be? Should we be moving somewhere else to protect
- 14:08Speaker 2: our children and our families? These are the questions we're
- 14:14Speaker 2: helplessly asking in our darkest hour.
- 14:21Speaker 3: I'm going to come back to that topic.
- 14:22Speaker 2: I've got James Patterson on the show a bit later.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Also Claire Lehman and Joe hilde Brand will talk about
- 14:28Speaker 2: it with them. Two Ray Hadley a bit late. I'm
- 14:30Speaker 2: sure he'll have something to say. But now let's turn
- 14:33Speaker 2: to the big news this afternoon, the mushroom trial in
- 14:36Speaker 2: Victoria that has sent shockwaves worldwide. After seven days of deliberations,
- 14:42Speaker 2: a jury has found Aaron Patterson guilty of murdering three
- 14:46Speaker 2: relatives of her estranged husband.
- 14:49Speaker 3: New pictures have tonight been.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Released of the leftovers of the deadly beef Wellington meal
- 14:56Speaker 2: that's the meal, also a photograph of Aaron Patterson's dining
- 15:00Speaker 2: table where her lunch guests.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Ate that fatal meal.
- 15:04Speaker 2: The jury was also shown this footage of Aaron Patterson
- 15:07Speaker 2: checking herself out of hospital after she claimed to have
- 15:12Speaker 2: eaten the deadly mushroom meal. And she was checking out
- 15:16Speaker 2: of hospital against medical advice. Yet a day earlier she
- 15:21Speaker 2: seemed fine walking into a service station where she'd bought
- 15:26Speaker 2: some food. So this was part of the footage and
- 15:29Speaker 2: the evidence that the jury considered.
- 15:31Speaker 3: Let's bring in.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Now media lawyer and partner at Thompson Gear Justin Queil Justin,
- 15:36Speaker 2: thank you very much for your time tonight. Did you
- 15:39Speaker 2: expect this verdict this afternoon based on the evidence that
- 15:43Speaker 2: was presented over the course of the trial, Look.
- 15:47Speaker 12: I probably did, but I always thought it was going
- 15:50Speaker 12: to be close, And to be frank, the longer the
- 15:54Speaker 12: deliberations went on, the more the chances that the jury
- 15:57Speaker 12: were going to find reasonable doubt in So look, if
- 16:01Speaker 12: they'd come back this afternoon and found not guilty, I
- 16:05Speaker 12: wouldn't have fallen off my chair. But I did think
- 16:09Speaker 12: it was probably more lucky than not they were going
- 16:12Speaker 12: to find her guilty.
- 16:15Speaker 2: I mean, there were a lot of lies that were
- 16:17Speaker 2: exposed on Aaron Patterson's part throughout the case, but one
- 16:22Speaker 2: thing that the Crown case never achieved was a clear.
- 16:26Speaker 3: Cut motive for the murders.
- 16:28Speaker 2: And this was something that I found interesting watching it,
- 16:31Speaker 2: because clearly she was guilty in the sense that she
- 16:34Speaker 2: did cook this deadly meal that led to the three deaths,
- 16:37Speaker 2: But what was her motive? Was this something that you
- 16:40Speaker 2: found unusual justin that the crown case wasn't able to
- 16:45Speaker 2: put forward a clear cut motive.
- 16:50Speaker 12: Yeah, I mean there was hints around, you know, a
- 16:53Speaker 12: bit of a dispute with the husband over childcare payments
- 16:57Speaker 12: and the like, and there was some pretty basic criticism
- 17:03Speaker 12: of the victims Buyer and Patterson in some WhatsApp groups
- 17:07Speaker 12: some months earlier. That criticism was pretty mild, really when
- 17:11Speaker 12: you think about families in the middle of breakups and
- 17:15Speaker 12: divorces and what have you. So I absolutely agree the
- 17:19Speaker 12: lack of motive or lack of motive that would justify
- 17:24Speaker 12: the killing of three people and the attempted murder of
- 17:28Speaker 12: the fourth is surprising. I also thought it was surprising
- 17:32Speaker 12: in fact that the prosecution all they really did on
- 17:35Speaker 12: motive at the start of the case in opening was
- 17:38Speaker 12: say we don't need to prove motive.
- 17:40Speaker 1: And that is true.
- 17:41Speaker 12: But I did wonder whether just telling the jury we
- 17:45Speaker 12: don't need to prove it, so we're not going to
- 17:46Speaker 12: bother and don't you worry about it, whether that was
- 17:50Speaker 12: actually going to cut the mustard, and whether the jury
- 17:53Speaker 12: were going to be able to sufficiently put it out
- 17:55Speaker 12: of their minds. So it was a fascinating aspect of it,
- 17:59Speaker 12: and reasonable doubt in the minds of the jury it
- 18:02Speaker 12: was probably going to come from the lack of motive.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, because she or her defense case, you know,
- 18:10Speaker 2: could have argued and as they did that, she got
- 18:13Speaker 2: the bags of mushrooms mixed up and she didn't intend
- 18:16Speaker 2: to kill them. So fascinating, and of course we're still
- 18:19Speaker 2: to see what her sentence will be.
- 18:21Speaker 3: Justin Quill really appreciate your analysis. Thank you.
- 18:26Speaker 2: All right, let's return to the weekend's anti Semitic attacks,
- 18:28Speaker 2: also the rest of the day's big stories with Collette
- 18:31Speaker 2: founding editor Claire Lehmann and Sky News host Joe Hildebrand.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Great you, Joe, you know, we just I just want
- 18:39Speaker 2: to ask you about that point I made that every
- 18:42Speaker 2: time something happens, we have the same lines regurgitated by
- 18:46Speaker 2: the politicians, but no new action, no new reform.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:50Speaker 13: I think lumping anti semitism in with other forms of
- 18:54Speaker 13: racism or discrimination, I think is in itself a complete
- 18:58Speaker 13: failure to understand and the extremely precise nature of anti
- 19:04Speaker 13: Semitism and it's extremely specific history, a history that is
- 19:08Speaker 13: both religiously based and Christians have been the worst persecutors
- 19:12Speaker 13: of Jews throughout history until a certain Nazi dictator came along.
- 19:17Speaker 13: Not in recent times, no, but the point being that there.
- 19:19Speaker 3: Is some of our greatest allies.
- 19:21Speaker 13: That's absolutely right, and as a card currying Catholic, I'm
- 19:25Speaker 13: very glad that we are. But the point being there
- 19:27Speaker 13: has been always, throughout history been a very specific targeting
- 19:31Speaker 13: of Jewish people for very specific reasons, and that morphed into.
- 19:36Speaker 1: The horrors of the Holocaust.
- 19:38Speaker 13: So to say, you know, you know, we're going to
- 19:41Speaker 13: you know, there's been another attack on a synagogue, or
- 19:44Speaker 13: someone's running in you know, through Israeli restaurants chanting death
- 19:48Speaker 13: to the IDF because someone decided that would be a
- 19:50Speaker 13: really fun chance to start at a music festival in
- 19:53Speaker 13: front of tens.
- 19:54Speaker 1: Of thousands of people.
- 19:55Speaker 13: We're just going to clamp down on all discrimination or
- 19:59Speaker 13: all racism. It's a bit like saying, hey, you know,
- 20:01Speaker 13: we've found that the airbags don't work in Holden commodorees,
- 20:04Speaker 13: so we're going to ban all cars from the road.
- 20:07Speaker 13: What you need to do is you need to address
- 20:09Speaker 13: the very specific causes, and this is a very specific
- 20:13Speaker 13: epidemic of hatred and violence against one particular group of
- 20:17Speaker 13: the community, based on propaganda and deliberate fueling of this
- 20:25Speaker 13: by high profile people like we saw at Glass Andbury,
- 20:27Speaker 13: and that is what needs to be target and address.
- 20:30Speaker 2: And I think part of the issue is that you
- 20:31Speaker 2: have two lifelong pro Palestinian activists in Tony Burke and Albanize.
- 20:36Speaker 13: But the activists do not see Tony Burke.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Or well, he has been he has been involved in
- 20:41Speaker 2: the cause for a long time, got lots of documentation
- 20:43Speaker 2: to that effect.
- 20:45Speaker 3: Claire, you know, the part of the problem.
- 20:47Speaker 2: As I was talking about in the start of the show,
- 20:50Speaker 2: quoting Tarlie Blickbau and Mark Leebert, are these protests where
- 20:54Speaker 2: these hateful chants emerge. The argument has been free speech,
- 20:58Speaker 2: political expression, but free speech shouldn't extend.
- 21:01Speaker 3: To hate speech.
- 21:03Speaker 2: You know, we can't excuse this breeding of violence any law,
- 21:06Speaker 2: can we.
- 21:08Speaker 14: Well, I think it's telling that they're now using the
- 21:10Speaker 14: chant death to the idea if it shows that they're
- 21:13Speaker 14: not a peace movement, they're a pro war movement, a
- 21:17Speaker 14: pro death movement. And like Joe says, anti semitism is
- 21:23Speaker 14: different to racism because it's not motivated by contempt. It's
- 21:29Speaker 14: often motivated by feelings of envy. It's conspiratorial in nature.
- 21:34Speaker 14: And so the failure of our leaders isn't just the
- 21:38Speaker 14: failure of law enforcement. It's a failure to step up
- 21:41Speaker 14: and say that these conspiracy theories that you hear about
- 21:46Speaker 14: the Jewish people online, spread by high profile influences and
- 21:50Speaker 14: you know, pop stars at Gastonbury and so on, these
- 21:54Speaker 14: conspiracy theories are false. They need to say more than
- 21:59Speaker 14: simply anti Semitism has no place here. They need to
- 22:02Speaker 14: falsify the propaganda that is being spread. And as I
- 22:06Speaker 14: wrote in The Australian over the weekend, this propaganda has
- 22:09Speaker 14: been around for decades and we know from the work
- 22:12Speaker 14: of historians and from declassified CIA documents that the Soviets
- 22:17Speaker 14: funded this disinformation about Israel purposely after the nineteen sixty
- 22:22Speaker 14: seven war in order to drive a wedge in the West,
- 22:25Speaker 14: in order to hurt the West. It's not just about
- 22:27Speaker 14: hurting Israel, it's about hurting all Western nations and about
- 22:31Speaker 14: attacking Western values. And so there really needs to be
- 22:34Speaker 14: more of a concerted effort to counter this disinformation. And
- 22:38Speaker 14: I just I don't see any real leadership or any
- 22:41Speaker 14: effort to do so at the moment.
- 22:44Speaker 2: And in more recent times. Of course, some of that
- 22:46Speaker 2: has been funded by the iigc Iran of course, and
- 22:51Speaker 2: the kataris well, there's still foreign at play here.
- 22:54Speaker 13: Interesting point, Bob Villain, the group that's chanted death Death
- 22:58Speaker 13: to the IDF. In other footage that hasn't been as
- 23:01Speaker 13: widely circulated, they actually brag about supporting violence. They say,
- 23:05Speaker 13: quote unquote, we are not passive. He says, there's a
- 23:08Speaker 13: lot of passive and that's me an.
- 23:09Speaker 3: Update on this.
- 23:11Speaker 14: Happily, there's a clip of them saying, we want every
- 23:13Speaker 14: idea of soldier to die.
- 23:15Speaker 3: It's not like a metaphor.
- 23:16Speaker 1: That's right.
- 23:17Speaker 13: So they actually brag about supporting violence. Interestingly though, in
- 23:20Speaker 13: proof of just what a performative wank fest this is
- 23:23Speaker 13: and how gutless they are. Of course, they don't follow
- 23:25Speaker 13: through of that. They're not the ones putting their own
- 23:27Speaker 13: lives on the line or actually having to endure or
- 23:30Speaker 13: even see the violence.
- 23:31Speaker 1: They're just supporting other people and aligning themselves with that's right.
- 23:35Speaker 1: So it's just it's just street.
- 23:37Speaker 13: It's extremely dangerous and reckless virtue signaling basically, all.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Right, let's have a look at alban Easy, because he
- 23:44Speaker 2: seems to be putting Australia's alliance with America into question
- 23:48Speaker 2: over the weekend with a speech that took a subtle
- 23:51Speaker 2: swipe at Trump. This is what Albinizi had to say
- 23:54Speaker 2: when he was speaking at the John Curtain Research Center.
- 23:58Speaker 15: Curtain's famous state that Australia looked to America was much
- 24:03Speaker 15: more than the idea of trading one strategic guaranteur for another, well,
- 24:09Speaker 15: swapping an alliance with the old world for one with
- 24:13Speaker 15: the new. There was a recognition that Australia's fate would
- 24:17Speaker 15: be decided in our region.
- 24:20Speaker 2: I mean, Joe, it seems like Albanize is further jeopardizing
- 24:25Speaker 2: Australia's alliance with the United States.
- 24:27Speaker 13: I think this might be one of those sort of
- 24:29Speaker 13: magic eye things where you see what you want to
- 24:31Speaker 13: see is that.
- 24:32Speaker 1: The rawsch actess.
- 24:33Speaker 13: I was in the room on Saturday night when he
- 24:35Speaker 13: made that speech.
- 24:36Speaker 1: That speech was.
- 24:37Speaker 3: Made as a friend, as a.
- 24:39Speaker 13: Guest of the John Curtin Research Center, and as a
- 24:42Speaker 13: guest of Nick Dironfirth, who was the director of the
- 24:44Speaker 13: John Curtin Research Center.
- 24:46Speaker 1: He is a very proud Jew.
- 24:50Speaker 13: On the show, and he's obviously in the senior figure
- 24:54Speaker 13: in the Labor Party. I was sitting next to him,
- 24:56Speaker 13: literally right next to him as his guest, as albot
- 24:58Speaker 13: was giving the speech, and there was certain not a
- 25:01Speaker 13: sense that there was no sort of sense in the
- 25:03Speaker 13: ruin that this is Albanese distancing himself from the US
- 25:07Speaker 13: or flipping the bird of the US or anything like that.
- 25:09Speaker 13: This was simply saying that he would put Australia's geostrategic
- 25:14Speaker 13: interests front center.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Foreign editor Greg Sheridan in The Australia has taken a
- 25:18Speaker 2: different view and it's reinforced by the fact that Albanese
- 25:22Speaker 2: is preparing for his fourth meeting with President. She hasn't
- 25:24Speaker 2: managed to secure meeting with Trump despite the fact he
- 25:27Speaker 2: was elected in November.
- 25:28Speaker 14: Clay, Yeah, I think these things are a bit tricky,
- 25:31Speaker 14: and when it comes to foreign policy, we have to
- 25:33Speaker 14: see look at what leaders do, not what they say.
- 25:37Speaker 14: And Urbanese is not substantially increasing our spending on defense,
- 25:42Speaker 14: and if we were actually disentangling ourselves or distancing ourselves
- 25:47Speaker 14: from the US, we would we seeing a massive ramp
- 25:50Speaker 14: up in defense spending. The only way we can have
- 25:53Speaker 14: things like the ndis in our generous welfare state is
- 25:56Speaker 14: because we live under the protection of the US security umbrella.
- 26:01Speaker 14: If we distance ourselves from that, well then it's funding
- 26:05Speaker 14: from schools, funding from hospitals into our defense. And so
- 26:09Speaker 14: that's not going to happen. And so I think, you know,
- 26:12Speaker 14: we've got to be clear on who the audience is.
- 26:15Speaker 14: And probably Albanezi was just focusing on the audience in
- 26:18Speaker 14: that room, a local, domestic audience, and he's probably not
- 26:22Speaker 14: trying to telegraph anything too serious over to the Americans.
- 26:26Speaker 3: I think if there was.
- 26:27Speaker 14: Any serious movement towards a different foreign policy, we'd be
- 26:31Speaker 14: seeing a far different budget than we are at the moment.
- 26:35Speaker 2: But there's no doubt that he has zero relationship with
- 26:38Speaker 2: the President.
- 26:39Speaker 3: Of the United States. I mean it's almost unheard of.
- 26:43Speaker 14: Yeah, but I mean there's going to be a great
- 26:46Speaker 14: deal of diplomats and other professionals in the so called
- 26:50Speaker 14: deep state. He was still going to be on the
- 26:54Speaker 14: phone and you know, keeping up the relationship between the
- 26:57Speaker 14: two nations.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Right whether they can get any positive outcomes, because I somehow.
- 27:04Speaker 3: Doubt can be doing.
- 27:06Speaker 13: Eventually they will meet and I think there will be
- 27:08Speaker 13: an increase in Australia's defense spending and Trump will come
- 27:11Speaker 13: out and say yes, we support UCARST. So I think
- 27:13Speaker 13: all that movement that people are looking for, that is
- 27:15Speaker 13: what the meeting will be there to generate, and so
- 27:17Speaker 13: they can both come out and to clear that the
- 27:19Speaker 13: deal's been done and everyone's a winner, winner.
- 27:21Speaker 1: A great deal.
- 27:22Speaker 3: I've heard it here first.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Thanks Joe, see you later on the late debate and
- 27:26Speaker 2: thanks so much, Claire.
- 27:27Speaker 3: Thanks you.
- 27:28Speaker 2: Now returning now to the anti Semitic attacks on the weekend,
- 27:32Speaker 2: let's bring in Liberal Senator James Patterson. James, thank you
- 27:35Speaker 2: very much for your time tonight, and you've been one
- 27:39Speaker 2: of the strongest figures in the coalition on this issue,
- 27:41Speaker 2: which is why I am so keen to speak to
- 27:43Speaker 2: you this evening. The Jacinta Alan government has now announced
- 27:48Speaker 2: an anti.
- 27:49Speaker 3: Hate task force.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Do you think this is good enough at this point?
- 27:54Speaker 2: More reviews when really we know what needs to be done.
- 28:00Speaker 16: Of course it's not good enough, Shari, And honestly, wasn't
- 28:03Speaker 16: the fire bombing of the Dass Israel Synagogue last year
- 28:05Speaker 16: enough for Cintererellen to realize that this was a serious
- 28:08Speaker 16: crisis in Victoria? And indeed a serious crisis in our country.
- 28:12Speaker 16: Why did it require the fire bombing of a second
- 28:14Speaker 16: synagogue for her to establish a task force that will
- 28:17Speaker 16: probably make the same recommendations that the Executive Council of
- 28:20Speaker 16: Australia in Jury and others have made for the action
- 28:23Speaker 16: which is required to combat this issue. I think the
- 28:26Speaker 16: Allen government here in Victoria is guilty of the same
- 28:28Speaker 16: thing that the Albanezi government is guilty of, which is
- 28:31Speaker 16: they thought that anti Semitism would go away on its own,
- 28:35Speaker 16: that it wouldn't require leadership, that it wouldn't require action,
- 28:37Speaker 16: that it wouldn't require fortitude, that it wouldn't require strength,
- 28:40Speaker 16: that if they just let it be, that it would
- 28:43Speaker 16: eventually die acquiet death and go away and wouldn't be
- 28:46Speaker 16: a problem anymore. I hope they have now been absolved
- 28:49Speaker 16: of that false assumption, because this is a crisis, it's
- 28:53Speaker 16: an ongoing one, it's getting worse, and it requires leadership
- 28:56Speaker 16: and action.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Now, James, you're very close to the Jewish community, so
- 29:00Speaker 2: you would know what I said at the end of
- 29:02Speaker 2: my editorial earlier is true that there are many Australian
- 29:06Speaker 2: Jews questioning how safe life now is in our country,
- 29:12Speaker 2: how safe people feel going to a synagogue, going to
- 29:14Speaker 2: a restaurant that is owned by Jews or serves Israeli food.
- 29:21Speaker 2: You know there are people leaving or thinking about leaving.
- 29:24Speaker 2: How have we come to this as a nation?
- 29:29Speaker 16: You're right, Chari, this is a sentiment which unfortunately I
- 29:31Speaker 16: do here from the Jewish community in Australia and here
- 29:35Speaker 16: in Melbourne, and I urge Australian Jews to stay committed
- 29:38Speaker 16: to our country because we are a better country with
- 29:41Speaker 16: you as part of it, and will be a far
- 29:42Speaker 16: worse country if you ever feel you have to leave it.
- 29:45Speaker 16: And frankly, if this country ever becomes unsafe for Jews,
- 29:48Speaker 16: well then it's unsafe for me and my family and
- 29:50Speaker 16: my friends and my community too. I don't want to
- 29:53Speaker 16: be part of a country that's not safe for Jews.
- 29:55Speaker 16: So we all have to band together and we have
- 29:57Speaker 16: to fight to make it so, and we have to
- 30:00Speaker 16: have expectations of our government that they will lead, that
- 30:02Speaker 16: they will take action like you. I do give Tony
- 30:04Speaker 16: Burk credit for a better response to this incident than
- 30:08Speaker 16: the ADUs Israel synagogue. It took him almost a week
- 30:11Speaker 16: to visit the Dudas Synagogue. He did no press conference.
- 30:13Speaker 16: There wasn't even a social media post. This time, within
- 30:16Speaker 16: forty eight hours he turned up. He held a press
- 30:18Speaker 16: conference and his words I think were strong and they
- 30:20Speaker 16: appeared to be heartfelt. But I will judge him by
- 30:22Speaker 16: his deeds and his actions, not just by his words.
- 30:25Speaker 16: And he could do well to go back to the
- 30:27Speaker 16: Executive Council of Australian Jury's letter after the Sky News
- 30:30Speaker 16: Anti Semitism summuch that contain those fifteen policy ideas, many
- 30:34Speaker 16: which relate to him and his portfolio, including stripping the
- 30:39Speaker 16: funding for organizations involved in promoting anti Semitism, Because, as
- 30:44Speaker 16: Talli Blueberk have said in The Australian Today, this is
- 30:47Speaker 16: not just about enforcement, law and consequences, which of course
- 30:49Speaker 16: it is. It is also about the culture that leads
- 30:53Speaker 16: to these attitudes festering. And if you let these organizations
- 30:56Speaker 16: which promote hate and promote anti Semitism receive taxpayers money,
- 31:00Speaker 16: then you're implying an endorsement of it. No wonder it
- 31:02Speaker 16: gets so out of control.
- 31:04Speaker 3: No.
- 31:04Speaker 2: Indeed, a couple of other things I want to ask
- 31:07Speaker 2: you about. One is the Israeli government's strong rebuke really
- 31:11Speaker 2: measurement Natiyaho weighed in on this. He released a statement
- 31:14Speaker 2: demanding the Australian government take action to deal with the
- 31:17Speaker 2: rioters to the fullest extend of the law. But which
- 31:21Speaker 2: leads me to the second point. This death to the
- 31:23Speaker 2: IDF chant. It's more transparent than from the river to
- 31:27Speaker 2: the sea. Does it need to immediately be deemed hate speech?
- 31:35Speaker 16: Well, the ugly face of the anti Israel movement is
- 31:38Speaker 16: revealing itself every day more and more clearly in the community.
- 31:41Speaker 16: If there was any doubt left about that, I think
- 31:43Speaker 16: that doubt has now been removed. They want to terrorize Jews,
- 31:46Speaker 16: they want them to feel unsafe. They're willing to go
- 31:48Speaker 16: and protest aggressively, almost violently at restaurants as well as
- 31:53Speaker 16: synagogues in order to achieve that aim. And they're being
- 31:56Speaker 16: very clear that peace is not their objective. Now you
- 31:58Speaker 16: and I always knew that peace wasn't they're objective, but
- 32:00Speaker 16: they're making that very clear with those chances, and there
- 32:03Speaker 16: has to be real consequences. I think that chance should
- 32:05Speaker 16: be examined as to whether it or not constitutes incitement
- 32:08Speaker 16: to violence. It seems pretty clear to me that the
- 32:11Speaker 16: intent is to incite violence and while sometimes they're careful
- 32:14Speaker 16: with their language and they say the IDF instead of Israelis,
- 32:17Speaker 16: or they say Zionists instead of Jews, I think we
- 32:20Speaker 16: all know what's underlying.
- 32:21Speaker 2: That, particularly when the actions speak louder than the words
- 32:25Speaker 2: and the places.
- 32:26Speaker 3: They are targeting.
- 32:26Speaker 2: Are you know, a synagogue, a Jewish place of worship,
- 32:30Speaker 2: nothing to do with Israel?
- 32:32Speaker 3: James Patterson, thank you so much, appreciate your clarity as always,
- 32:36Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 32:37Speaker 2: All Right, coming up, the devastating floods in Texas, Elon
- 32:41Speaker 2: Musk's new political party.
- 32:42Speaker 3: And Trump's tariff deadline.
- 32:44Speaker 2: We'll talk about all of that with Koshagada, plus Ray
- 32:47Speaker 2: Hadley's on the desk. We'll see what he thinks of
- 32:49Speaker 2: the Aaron Patterson guilty verdict.
- 32:51Speaker 3: That's after this quick break.
- 32:56Speaker 2: Welcome back, and let's bring in now our Monday regular
- 32:59Speaker 2: Radio Laga and Ray Hardley.
- 33:01Speaker 3: Ray.
- 33:01Speaker 2: So much to talk about, and I want to start
- 33:04Speaker 2: with the Aaron Pattison guilty verdict. Guilty, guilty, guilty. She
- 33:08Speaker 2: was found to have murdered these three people by the jury.
- 33:11Speaker 3: What did you did you think she was guilty the
- 33:13Speaker 3: whole time?
- 33:14Speaker 5: Well, obviously it's difficult when you're not in the court room.
- 33:17Speaker 5: You know, you read the evidence, but you don't hear
- 33:19Speaker 5: how it's presented. I listened to Justin Quill, who's wonderful
- 33:24Speaker 5: lawyer in fact has represented me on many occasions in defamation.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Preceding mister Quill, and I heard him in the past.
- 33:31Speaker 5: Yes, hopefully no more anyway, sorry, Justin anyway, I heard
- 33:36Speaker 5: him say that he wouldn't have been surprised either way
- 33:39Speaker 5: it went.
- 33:40Speaker 1: It's unanimous.
- 33:41Speaker 5: But she's guilty of killing three people and attempting to
- 33:43Speaker 5: kill another person. And if you go through the key
- 33:47Speaker 5: evidence as I have this evening after the guilty finding,
- 33:50Speaker 5: it's hard to.
- 33:52Speaker 1: Not agree with the jury that it was ananimous verdict.
- 33:55Speaker 5: The next phase, of course, the sentencing, which will obviously
- 33:58Speaker 5: given us a triple murder, be a very long since,
- 34:00Speaker 5: one would imagine.
- 34:01Speaker 2: I just always wondered why, you know, obviously she made
- 34:05Speaker 2: the deadly meal, but what was her motivations pill the
- 34:08Speaker 2: in laws who were helping her with the children they
- 34:11Speaker 2: were babysitting. I just find that really odd, unless you know,
- 34:15Speaker 2: there was just something unusual.
- 34:17Speaker 3: Going on in her mind.
- 34:18Speaker 5: I think given the weight of evidence of a whole
- 34:21Speaker 5: range of things that happened after the murders. There was
- 34:25Speaker 5: certainly something going on in her mind, and we caun't
- 34:27Speaker 5: sort of venture it was the madness perhaps, yes.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Yes, indeed now I when I ask your view on
- 34:35Speaker 2: you know, I was having this conversation with Johide brand Claire.
- 34:37Speaker 1: I heard it outside.
- 34:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, Alban Easy is surely completely damaging our
- 34:43Speaker 2: relationship with the United States.
- 34:46Speaker 3: And and he's closer to China.
- 34:48Speaker 5: Now, he was about to have his fourth visit with
- 34:50Speaker 5: the Chinese leader. He hasn't cracked it for a chat
- 34:52Speaker 5: with Donald Trump yet. But it all started with sending
- 34:56Speaker 5: Penny Wong.
- 34:57Speaker 1: He might as well have sent me.
- 35:00Speaker 5: All the good she did over there, as useful as
- 35:03Speaker 5: a sun roof and a submarine. Penny trying to deal
- 35:06Speaker 5: with the Americans, and after her views on Gaza and
- 35:09Speaker 5: the rest of it, and putting herself at id with
- 35:11Speaker 5: the Americans over a whole range of things, and now
- 35:14Speaker 5: this oration over the course of the weekend with Greg Sheridan,
- 35:18Speaker 5: and I have a huge respect for Gregor is a
- 35:20Speaker 5: regular guest on my program when I was still doing it,
- 35:24Speaker 5: and his analysis of it is just spot on. Without
- 35:29Speaker 5: even thinking he's done really significant damage on the eve
- 35:33Speaker 5: of debate about tariffs.
- 35:36Speaker 1: Orcus and a whole range of things.
- 35:37Speaker 5: I mean, I don't think the Prime Minister really understands
- 35:41Speaker 5: how Donald Trump feels about the Ambassador Kevin Rudd, let
- 35:45Speaker 5: alone how he might feel about him. They're from the
- 35:47Speaker 5: opper side of politics, so you'll be doing your best.
- 35:50Speaker 5: I mean, it's a simple fact that from nineteen forty
- 35:53Speaker 5: one and just beyond that, we relied heavily on the
- 35:56Speaker 5: Americans and the Pacific, and if we getting strife again
- 35:59Speaker 5: from our northern neighbors, we're going to have to rely
- 36:01Speaker 5: upon them again and we need to have a really
- 36:03Speaker 5: good relationship with them.
- 36:04Speaker 2: Exactly if for whatever reason Alberiz he not needs to
- 36:07Speaker 2: call in a favor from Trump, well he's got no
- 36:10Speaker 2: relationship to speak of. And you know, you can't overstate
- 36:13Speaker 2: the fact that it has been eight months since Donald
- 36:16Speaker 2: Trump was elected and Albertiz he's got no meeting, no relationship.
- 36:19Speaker 2: And you look how the labor Prime Minister in the UK, Kirstarma.
- 36:23Speaker 3: Has handled it.
- 36:24Speaker 2: And he's a lefty as well, and he handed it
- 36:26Speaker 2: so well.
- 36:27Speaker 1: It's probably even more lefty.
- 36:28Speaker 5: But yeah, great, Sheridan makes the point that he talks
- 36:31Speaker 5: about defending ourselves.
- 36:34Speaker 1: I mean, have you looked at a defense budget lately?
- 36:38Speaker 5: We might as well get robots like they did in
- 36:40Speaker 5: seven and eighty eight and go outside the heads and
- 36:43Speaker 5: go up a Hawksbury or something.
- 36:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:44Speaker 1: Yeah, in all sorts of trouble. But now that's not
- 36:47Speaker 1: going to change.
- 36:48Speaker 2: The Australian Round the story this Afternoon by Steve Jackson
- 36:51Speaker 2: that Eite Butchros is penning a memoir which includes her
- 36:56Speaker 2: time at the ABC. It's going to be out in October.
- 36:58Speaker 2: I think it's called and Apologetically iter. I think the
- 37:02Speaker 2: title is from memory.
- 37:05Speaker 3: So do you think it's going to be a.
- 37:06Speaker 2: Bit of a tell all about what happened behind the
- 37:08Speaker 2: scenes at the public broadcaster?
- 37:10Speaker 5: Well, given that Ida has spent almost sixty years in
- 37:13Speaker 5: the media, I'd think there's things that she would reveal
- 37:18Speaker 5: that haven't been revealed previously pre the ABC. Let alone
- 37:22Speaker 5: post the ABC, I had a short journey with her
- 37:26Speaker 5: in about eighty two or eighty three, showing my age
- 37:29Speaker 5: when she was presenting a program on two UI where
- 37:32Speaker 5: I was a lowly placed race caller and not for long. Well,
- 37:37Speaker 5: things changed dramatically over the years, but she was always
- 37:41Speaker 5: courteous and always polite to the younger people around the place,
- 37:44Speaker 5: including men.
- 37:44Speaker 1: I've had a great deal of.
- 37:45Speaker 5: Respect and time for her, and I guess that I'll
- 37:48Speaker 5: be one of those people. October twenty eight to thing
- 37:51Speaker 5: is released, along with a lot of ABC types, will
- 37:54Speaker 5: be most concerned about what I have got to say, because.
- 37:57Speaker 1: One thing I know about her she speaks to mine fourth.
- 38:00Speaker 3: That's right exactly. By the way, She's been very good
- 38:03Speaker 3: to me over the years.
- 38:04Speaker 2: When I was clear magazine editor, she came over to
- 38:06Speaker 2: my house, gave me advice, helped me out with my
- 38:09Speaker 2: magazine covers, very generous.
- 38:12Speaker 5: I think that she's made a focus of her life
- 38:14Speaker 5: of helping young women with ability, and obviously you're one
- 38:19Speaker 5: of those young women that benefited by her advice. And
- 38:23Speaker 5: I think she's a fantastic lady. And I'm looking forward
- 38:25Speaker 5: to the book and I hope she gives it the
- 38:26Speaker 5: ABC in space.
- 38:28Speaker 3: No, indeed, I hope she does as well. Now I
- 38:30Speaker 3: have to ask you your view.
- 38:32Speaker 2: On what is being mishandled when it comes to the
- 38:35Speaker 2: anti savitism crisis in this country. How are we still
- 38:38Speaker 2: speaking about this, you know, twenty one months after it
- 38:41Speaker 2: first kicked off with vigor.
- 38:44Speaker 5: Well, we could all be embarrassed at what's happened since
- 38:48Speaker 5: with all these protests. But I was reading some stuff
- 38:51Speaker 5: this morning about what happened in Melbourne on two separate
- 38:54Speaker 5: occasions over the last week, and Krystal Mark got a mention.
- 39:00Speaker 1: Now, no one at the.
- 39:01Speaker 5: Protests would have a clue what Crystal Mark would mean,
- 39:04Speaker 5: and I'd strongly suggest to them go to Google, get
- 39:07Speaker 5: the good doctor Google out and have a look.
- 39:09Speaker 1: Crystal Nark was a.
- 39:11Speaker 5: Period in the nineteen thirties when Nazi Germany declared war
- 39:16Speaker 5: on Jewish businesses and rampage through cities, destroying those businesses
- 39:22Speaker 5: and destroying those people's livelihoods to try and in some
- 39:26Speaker 5: way destroy them as a race. They almost succeeded, to
- 39:30Speaker 5: the tune of six million people being exterminated during World
- 39:34Speaker 5: War II. So to those ninkh and poops, those dunderheads
- 39:39Speaker 5: who weren't around then, and not many of us were,
- 39:42Speaker 5: but haven't read the history books about Crystal Nark, Think
- 39:44Speaker 5: about what you did at that restaurant in Melbourne, and
- 39:48Speaker 5: think about what the Nazis did in the nineteen thirties,
- 39:51Speaker 5: and then you'll have some sort of idea of what
- 39:54Speaker 5: policy you're following.
- 39:57Speaker 2: Yeah, Well said, couldn't agree more. And it has for
- 40:01Speaker 2: the Holocaust survivors who are alive, it does bring back
- 40:05Speaker 2: similarities and the trauma, the intergenerational trauma.
- 40:09Speaker 5: You know, look, little wonderful country, but it's been a
- 40:13Speaker 5: blight on our society since October seven.
- 40:17Speaker 1: And one thing I will say.
- 40:19Speaker 5: If I see Tony Burke talking out the side of
- 40:22Speaker 5: his mouth one more time about how dreadfulness is. You
- 40:25Speaker 5: should have been saying this on October eight, nine and ten,
- 40:28Speaker 5: a couple of years ago, not down the track and
- 40:31Speaker 5: trying to make out you're on the side of the
- 40:32Speaker 5: Jewish faith.
- 40:33Speaker 1: Mister Burke, because you're not.
- 40:35Speaker 5: You've been missing in action, and you discuss me with
- 40:38Speaker 5: your attempts to try and make up for your past wrongs.
- 40:41Speaker 5: It's dreadful, and Tony Burke hang your head in shame.
- 40:47Speaker 3: Well said.
- 40:47Speaker 2: He's the Multicultural in Fairs Minister, he's the one in
- 40:51Speaker 2: charge of all of this, and the Home Affairs minister.
- 40:53Speaker 3: Now it's appalling, and you're right.
- 40:57Speaker 2: The fact that he's now speaking up is just a
- 40:59Speaker 2: re action of how bad the situation is. That he's
- 41:02Speaker 2: now realizing that the gravity of it.
- 41:05Speaker 5: He's been dragged kicking and screaming, I'm sure to the
- 41:08Speaker 5: cameras because deep in the review of his mind, he
- 41:12Speaker 5: doesn't mean what he says about the thing that Jewish faith.
- 41:15Speaker 5: He never has, never has, insincerities dripping from every pore.
- 41:20Speaker 1: Sorry if I've got a bit cranky, but it does
- 41:23Speaker 1: make me cranky.
- 41:24Speaker 2: I'm so grateful for your for your anger and your fire.
- 41:27Speaker 2: Wish you was still on the air in the morning
- 41:29Speaker 2: to fire up at them all, but at least you're
- 41:30Speaker 2: doing it here.
- 41:31Speaker 3: Thank you very much.
- 41:32Speaker 1: Ray, I get the vent by Anger one night.
- 41:34Speaker 3: Awak, yeah, please hold on to it all right.
- 41:39Speaker 2: Still to come, we'll get the latest from the floods
- 41:41Speaker 2: in Texas. People children still missing, plus Elon Musk's new
- 41:46Speaker 2: political party.
- 41:47Speaker 3: That's after the break.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Welcome back, and let's turn now to the devastating floods
- 41:55Speaker 2: in Texas and Sky News contributed Kosher Garda joins me. Now, Kosher,
- 42:00Speaker 2: we know the death tolls now stands at eighty two.
- 42:03Speaker 2: At least forty one people are still missing. But the
- 42:06Speaker 2: question is, how did this escalate so quickly before any
- 42:10Speaker 2: evacuation orders could be issued?
- 42:13Speaker 3: How did it get to this point.
- 42:16Speaker 17: That Shah is definitely one of the main questions everybody's asking.
- 42:20Speaker 17: It seems like really a force of nature, just the
- 42:23Speaker 17: speed and intensity with which the rainfall came. The weather
- 42:28Speaker 17: forecast did not predict it accurately, the timing was very unlucky,
- 42:32Speaker 17: and that the bulk of the rain happened at four
- 42:34Speaker 17: or five o'clock in the morning, when most people were
- 42:36Speaker 17: asleep and maybe not where or paying attention to evacuation
- 42:39Speaker 17: orders that started to come in from the weather system
- 42:42Speaker 17: and other authorities, and the rainfall just it was so
- 42:45Speaker 17: dramatic that it was something like thirty inches or so
- 42:49Speaker 17: is how much thirty feet I'm sorry, is how much
- 42:51Speaker 17: it accumulated in under the span of an hour. So
- 42:53Speaker 17: just sort of caught people off guard. And from that
- 42:56Speaker 17: point you're swimming upstream unfortunately figuratively and literally, and it's
- 43:00Speaker 17: just pure devastation. So much life has been lost.
- 43:04Speaker 2: And what's so devastating about this is in the US,
- 43:07Speaker 2: summer camps are a very big thing, and many of
- 43:10Speaker 2: those who are missing or even were killed, we're children
- 43:14Speaker 2: on a summer camp.
- 43:17Speaker 17: Yeah, so it's a camp called Mystic Camp in this
- 43:20Speaker 17: area in Central Texas is really beautiful. It's sort of
- 43:23Speaker 17: a valley, it's very mountainous around it, and it's a
- 43:26Speaker 17: popular place for camps, including summer camp. Twenty eight children
- 43:29Speaker 17: out of that depth toll are our children from ages
- 43:32Speaker 17: as young as six to sixteen, and there is search
- 43:36Speaker 17: and rescue missions going on right now, and something like
- 43:39Speaker 17: eleven of the people that we still have missing are
- 43:42Speaker 17: still unfortunately very young children. So it's just really really sad.
- 43:45Speaker 17: These people are at summer camp and sleeping in their
- 43:48Speaker 17: campers where this rainfall just came kind of out of
- 43:51Speaker 17: nowhere and just snuck up on them.
- 43:53Speaker 3: It's just so devastating.
- 43:54Speaker 2: And there's an expected twenty five to seventy five millimeters
- 43:57Speaker 2: more rain expected in the coming day, so that is
- 44:01Speaker 2: hopefully the situation doesn't get worse. At least people are
- 44:04Speaker 2: prepared now, but you know, for those missing, just terrible.
- 44:09Speaker 2: And now, Koach, I want to ask you about Elon
- 44:11Speaker 2: Musk's new political party. He's calling it America, the America Party.
- 44:16Speaker 2: Trump has responded to it. Have a look at this.
- 44:20Speaker 12: I think it's.
- 44:20Speaker 18: Ridiculous to start a third party. We have a tremendous
- 44:24Speaker 18: success with the Republican party. The Democrats have lost their way,
- 44:29Speaker 18: but it's always been a two party system, and I
- 44:32Speaker 18: think starting a third party just hands to confusion.
- 44:36Speaker 2: I mean, koshar I thought their feud wouldn't last long
- 44:39Speaker 2: and they'd sought it out because this is just embarrassing
- 44:42Speaker 2: taking place in the world stage, and it's affecting Tesla's
- 44:45Speaker 2: stock as well.
- 44:48Speaker 17: Yes, this is you know, people have liken it to
- 44:51Speaker 17: Godzilla versus King Kong, where they just studies two big
- 44:54Speaker 17: juggernaut figures. And I also thought, like, you're sorry that
- 44:57Speaker 17: it was just words and rhetorical back and forth. But
- 45:01Speaker 17: he does seem to be doubling down with this. Where
- 45:03Speaker 17: Trump is coming from with that statement is in the US,
- 45:06Speaker 17: which is a winner take all system. Third parties never win.
- 45:09Speaker 17: They've historically never ever won. It's never going to work
- 45:12Speaker 17: in terms of gaining control of the government. But what
- 45:15Speaker 17: it can do is be a spoiler or an influencer,
- 45:17Speaker 17: a cannibalization effect for one of the two parties. It's
- 45:20Speaker 17: happened a couple of times in history, Ross Perot in
- 45:22Speaker 17: nineteen ninety two. It's widely regarded was a big factor
- 45:26Speaker 17: in Clinton's victory over Bush. The Elder and back in
- 45:28Speaker 17: the eighteen fifties, Millard Fillmore actually got the highest number
- 45:31Speaker 17: of the popular vote in US history and is regarded
- 45:34Speaker 17: to a cannibalized Republican Party then as well. So I
- 45:37Speaker 17: think that's the concern that Trump is raising. If he
- 45:39Speaker 17: were to do this, could cannibalize and maybe hand victory
- 45:43Speaker 17: to the Democrats, and if not in the presidential in
- 45:45Speaker 17: the upcoming midterms. But we shall see if Musk is
- 45:47Speaker 17: serious or if it's still just rhetoric.
- 45:50Speaker 3: All right, Kasha Gott, I really appreciate your time.
- 45:52Speaker 2: Thank you, And after the break, just Into Alan is
- 45:54Speaker 2: poised to win the next election despite.
- 45:57Speaker 3: Chaos in Melbourne. That's next. Welcome back and let's bring
- 46:04Speaker 3: it now.
- 46:05Speaker 2: Anti Defamation Commission Chairman devere Abrahma Viktavia, thank you for
- 46:09Speaker 2: joining us.
- 46:10Speaker 3: The polls are.
- 46:11Speaker 2: Showing Victorian premierges Into Alan is the favorite to win
- 46:14Speaker 2: the vic state election. This is despite chaos in her state,
- 46:19Speaker 2: not the least of which was the events of Friday night.
- 46:22Speaker 2: She didn't bother to turn up to the synagogue right away.
- 46:25Speaker 2: Still no arrests for the dast fire bombing back in December.
- 46:29Speaker 2: Do you think the state government's response has been good
- 46:31Speaker 2: enough here.
- 46:34Speaker 19: Before I get to that, and thanks for having me.
- 46:37Speaker 1: You know.
- 46:37Speaker 19: Driving on the way here, I was reminded of Charles
- 46:41Speaker 19: the Golden form of French president. He wrote a book,
- 46:44Speaker 19: a memoir, and the first line was, I've always had
- 46:47Speaker 19: a certain idea about France, and I've lived here for
- 46:50Speaker 19: thirty nine years, Shari, and I had a certain idea
- 46:53Speaker 19: about Australia as an open, tolerant, welcoming, safe country for Jews.
- 46:58Speaker 19: But that if no longer holds. It's been absolutely shattered
- 47:03Speaker 19: and it's clear to me and it's clear to everyone.
- 47:05Speaker 19: I think that something very bad is happening. And I've
- 47:08Speaker 19: spoken to Holocaust survivors who came here after the war
- 47:12Speaker 19: and they said to me that in living memory, they've
- 47:14Speaker 19: never seen an expression and the levels of antisemitism that
- 47:18Speaker 19: we are seeing today, you know, the tsunami of antisemitism
- 47:22Speaker 19: has been rising since October seven. And what happened over
- 47:25Speaker 19: the weekend, the incidents at is Melbourne Synagogue and the
- 47:29Speaker 19: mis known restaurant, was simply plunging the knife even deeper
- 47:33Speaker 19: into the heart of every Jew. And yes, I welcome
- 47:37Speaker 19: the establishment of the task Force by a Premier Cina Allen.
- 47:41Speaker 19: But I hope that it's a task force of action,
- 47:45Speaker 19: not just press releases. We are getting to a point,
- 47:47Speaker 19: and I want your listeners and your viewers to hear this.
- 47:51Speaker 19: We are getting to a point that being Jewish in Australia,
- 47:54Speaker 19: going into a synagogue we're a star of David Oriyamica.
- 47:58Speaker 19: Going into an Israeli restaurant, even owning a Jewish business
- 48:02Speaker 19: means that you ask yourself, will I get home tonight?
- 48:05Speaker 19: Will I end up in hospital? And being Jewish shouldn't
- 48:08Speaker 19: carry a risk assessment and it shouldn't mean that you
- 48:12Speaker 19: have a target on your back. But that's the terrifying
- 48:15Speaker 19: situation that we find ourselves in.
- 48:18Speaker 2: So with this crisis of social cohesion across Australia, but
- 48:23Speaker 2: particularly acute in Victoria, everything else that's going wrong with
- 48:27Speaker 2: the state, the budget, transport. You know, is it difficult
- 48:33Speaker 2: to understand why the polls are saying that Jacinta Allen
- 48:37Speaker 2: is set to be returned.
- 48:40Speaker 19: Look, I'm not sure about you know, the political punditary.
- 48:43Speaker 19: All I know is that for too long we've had
- 48:47Speaker 19: elected leaders, not just in Victoria but across the country
- 48:51Speaker 19: is accusing the violent rhetoric. There are people out there
- 48:55Speaker 19: shari who revise Zionism that they've lost sight of the
- 48:58Speaker 19: fact that we are human. They legitimize us, they defame,
- 49:02Speaker 19: they dehumanize us, and they turn us into objects of hatred.
- 49:06Speaker 1: And guess what.
- 49:07Speaker 19: When you turn people into objects of hatred, you declare
- 49:11Speaker 19: open season on the Jewish community. And it's not a
- 49:13Speaker 19: surprise that people feel that we are fair game for
- 49:16Speaker 19: violence and for harassment and for intimidation.
- 49:20Speaker 3: No, indeed, it is.
- 49:21Speaker 2: And I should mention that crime broadly is a serious
- 49:24Speaker 2: issue in Victoria as well.
- 49:26Speaker 3: You know, of course we.
- 49:27Speaker 2: Have seen this extreme anti Semitic violence on the weekend,
- 49:30Speaker 2: but crime has been plaguing the state from mastevere Abramovich,
- 49:34Speaker 2: appreciate your time. Thank you so much, all right, and
- 49:37Speaker 2: thank you for your company tonight.
- 49:38Speaker 3: I'll see you tomorrow at eight o'clock. And right now,
- 49:41Speaker 3: here's Paul Murray no man Cave
