- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Crazy, you know, 20 episodes in.
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: What I want to do is I want to share 10 lessons of what I've learned so far and use it as a reflection piece of what the People Run Podcast has been.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: This is the People Run Podcast.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: It's wild to think of we're now 20 episodes in and what simply started as an idea that I got on a run and wanting to share stories and talk about runners.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, we're 20 episodes in, and I wanna first and foremost, thank you.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Thank you to everyone who's listening, who's tuning in, who's sharing, reposting, um, commenting on your favorite podcast platform, whether it's Spotify, Apple.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Thanks for tuning in, leaving reviews, comments, you know.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Thanks for tuning in for those of you that have been listening on YouTube.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Um it's crazy, you know.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: 20 episodes in was uh just a simple idea, and now it's uh growing, and we have more episodes to come.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: So I wanted to take this time to sit down and say thank you for being on uh on this journey with me and listening to the People Run podcast.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: For those of you who have been guests on the show, I can't thank you enough for uh being, you know, sharing your stories and sharing it with the audience and and giving some tips and advice, you know, for some of the experts as well that has been on.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Without further ado, though, what I want to do is to make it a little different is I want to share 10 lessons of what I've learned so far and use it as a reflection piece of what the People Run podcast has been since.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: But before we start that, I want to take a moment to uh say rest in peace to a good friend of mine who passed away, unfortunately, um, who was on episode two.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: If you know him, um, there's a lot of us who were friends of him and shared and and enjoyed his story.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: But uh to my good friend Alex, man, rest in peace.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: And um it's crazy that you're gone, man.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Rest in peace, brother.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: We all miss you.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Uh a lot of people running New York Marathon gonna be thinking about you this this uh coming fall here in a couple weeks, actually.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: It's about three weeks out.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: So uh thank you, man.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: The impact you left and continue to leave is is an amazing legacy.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: With that said, let's get right into these uh 10 lessons through the first 20 episodes of the People Run Podcast.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Lesson number one.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: The favorite coat from one of our favorite running shoes, uh, depending who you ask, uh just do it.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: When I started this show in this podcast, like many, you know, you're starting on your running journey, you're starting on a new path, maybe you're on a new career goal.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: You got all these thoughts in your head, I want to make it perfect.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Should I do it?
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Should I not do it?
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: The answer is just do it.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: We all start somewhere, you get better with time, and you're gonna continue learning through that journey, and you're never usually gonna regret having just started.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: So, lesson number one, just do it.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Lesson number two, as my good friend Ali was saying, was also a guest on the show in episode three, and many after have said these exact words the marathon owes you nothing.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: That might sound harsh, but that's the reality.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: The marathon is a very long distance, right?
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: And I talk about the marathon, although we've had all kinds of runners on the show, we've had um track experts, we have people who uh favor the half or favor the trails, ultras, but say that for any long distance, if you will.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: The marathon, ultras, they owe you nothing.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Respect the distance, train for it and uh give it what you got, you know, respect it, and you'll show up on race day and have fun.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: I would say the same thing even for something short like a 5k, 10k, one mile, respect the distance and show up.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Number three, piggybacking off the last one.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Consistency beats the perfect plan, right?
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: As one of my good friends said on the show as well, it's good that you did it today.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Show up again and do it tomorrow.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Consistency wins, right?
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: And why I say it beats the plan, uh as I've gone through this journey 20 episodes in, and we've had all kinds of guests on all different walks of life, different everyday runner stories.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: The one thing that's the has to common is consistency is the way to win, right?
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Show up today, show up tomorrow, show up month in and month out.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, we show up to work every day.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: You know, if you have a family, you gotta show up for your kids.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: You don't have a choice, you gotta show up every day.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: And that's part of the journey.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: And you get better at it and you improve.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: That will be any plan and any exotic workout you want to do, if you will, right?
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: If you show up consistently, you're gonna get results.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: I'm seeing it in my own running now, just showing up day in and day out.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: Maybe you're tired, but just to work out.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Show up.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Lesson number four.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: We had a great guest in Maggie, who is a sports psychologist on the show.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: And lesson number four is respect the mental game, right?
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: We all know or should know.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: And for those that have listened, we shared a little bit about this on most of the episodes, but it's what you're pretty well known out there that you want to train and be consistent, your nutrition's gotta be right.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: Your recovery's gotta be on point.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Sleep, recovery tools, take a nap.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: But you also want to respect the mental game, right?
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Stress is a big impact on how you're gonna perform when you're running out there, whether it's a race or maybe it's not a race.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: Maybe you're just trying to reach a certain milestone or goal, maybe you're trying to have a transformation in your life.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: Respect the mental game, you know, take breathers.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: I'm a big fan of naps.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, visualize, um, you know, simulate the race day.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: Um, as uh tune into that episode with Maggie, she shares a lot more tips.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: But um respect the mental game is what I would say to everyone.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: You know, calm stress, uh, take care of what you need to, um, if you you don't feel right.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Um, you're also not alone in this, you know, respect the mental game.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Number five, and I'm saying that since I've been running uh myself, I'm going through a training block right now, as I'm sure I've shared on many episodes, but many of you are.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: It's the fall seasons, a lot of races are happening as I say this and record this one.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: It is Chicago Marathon Weekend.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: I'm excited for that.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: But lesson number five is in carbs we trust.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: And that's gonna be one of my favorite sayings going along.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: I had a Carla, registered dietitian out in Florida.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: She was on uh one of the episodes.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Tune into that one if you want to get some nutritional tips.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: But the reason I say in carbs we trust, as you ramp up your efforts, whether you're running faster, whether you're running more mileage, whether you're trading for your first marathon, your first 5K, your 10k, and it's something that you haven't done, or maybe you're getting more consistently, you gotta up the carbs.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: If I took anything away from nutrition on that episode and it's helped me personally in this training block right now, if you don't fuel enough and eat enough carbs, I'll just speak from my experience.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: I got groggy, I felt tired, I felt lethargic.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: I just spoke about the mental game.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: My mental game wasn't right.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Um increase the carbs, you will have great success, right?
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: I know we all want to be fit and maybe shredded or feel good, but fuel for what you're training for and in carbs we trust.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Number six, train smart, right?
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: I talked about consistency and fueling, but um train smart, train for the distance.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: You are you are many many people have shared on the show where they you know they're they're coaches themselves and they help facilitate people to train.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: Um you want to train smart.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: You know, if you're training for for a marathon, train for those distances and those paces of a marathon.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: If you're training for a 5K, train specifically for those distances and paces that require are required on the 5k.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: If you're training for an ultra, train for the time you're gonna be on feed on that ultra, right?
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: That's something that's been pretty common amongst the guests that have been on the show.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: Train smart and for the race you're running.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: Number seven, ignore the noise.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: There is so much noise out there, I'm sure you can all relate, right?
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: Um, I don't want to date myself, but as the youngsters would say, Doom scrolling is a thing, right?
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: I'm sure we can all relate.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: Uh, ignore the noise.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: There's so much out there as what to do on nutrition and what not to do on nutrition.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: We all see the memes, right?
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: The memes are like, someone told me don't eat fruit, don't drink water, the water's bad.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: Um, do zone two.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: Another says, Don't do zone two.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: There's so much information out there.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: Follow what's proven and ignore the noise, right?
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: Um, we have a lot of good.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: That's part of why I've done this show to put good information out there, but we also have a lot of athletes and people out there that we can look to, find a good one.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: And at the end of the day, one of the previous lessons, consistency wins at the end of the day.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Whatever you're doing, if it allows you to be consistent, you're probably on the right track, right?
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Because consistency you're gonna see results.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: Number eight, be in be inspired by others, piggybacking off what I just said, but start where you are.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Just because you see someone running really fast, don't try to emulate the same pace if you're not in that fitness.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: Don't eat the same way one person eats as the other.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: Train for what and eat and and be inspired, but start where you are.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: Whether you're slower, faster, start where you are and be consistent and follow the progress.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: You know, the win for you should be progress for all of us, if you will, including myself, right?
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: Start where you are, definitely be inspired by others.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: I am I am inspired by many of the guests that have been on here.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: Um, and I continue to do so, but you also have to start where you are, and I and I think it's a unique message um that that we have to take heed into, if you will.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: Number nine.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: The world is full of runners, and there's no one way to do this.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: There's no one way to race, show up, run.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: There's no one way to do a podcast, if you will, right?
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Have fun with it.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Um, there's a world full of runners.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: We've had so many guests on here for all different walks of life.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: Um, we've had runners who said they would never do a marathon.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: We've had runners from the United Kingdom.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: Um, we have runners and someone who I I'm glad he was able to be on, and someone who I respect highly, uh Sotomai Hera, who is from Japan, but uh lives out in Sydney, right?
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: We talked on our episode about some of the the lessons you hear from running.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: For example, in long runs, running over two hours in America.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: We hear over two and a half.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: I see people run three.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: There's no one way to do this.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: We've had so many runners on here.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: Um, the world is full of them.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: We've had runners who are Olympic qualifying, we've had runners who are Olympic qualifying and diabetic.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: The world is a big place, and there's no one way to use a cliche to skin a cat.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: Last but not least, number 10.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: The people make it all worth it.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: It's everything, right?
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: We we as humans, it's kind of a weird way to put it, but people are everything, man.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: Have a good time out there, relate to people.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: I I said this on one of the podcasts with uh my friend Jerry.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: It reminds me, Jerry's been running for 20 plus years, sub 230 marathons.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: That is insane to me.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: But we joked on that episode, and I'm remember remembering or reflecting, if you will, right now on that episode where we both talked about man, it's no greater feeling than when you have a race.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: Like I mentioned, Chicago marathon is coming up.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: You go to the expo, and everyone is someone like you, right?
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: But they come from different walks of life.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: You know, everyone's just put in a 16, 20, 12-week, eight-week block, and they're all training for the same race.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: You guys are gonna hit the same course when you show up to a track.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: Um, you all run in that same 400 meter or whatever it is on the track, right?
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: We we all want carbs, we're all fueling, we're all trying to be and improve ourselves.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: There's so many people out there, the people make it all worth it, man.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: Get out there and network with people.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: Some of the people I've had on the show, I'd never thought I would get on the show.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: I've learned so much from the show uh from people in different walks of life on how they train stuff that I'm implementing in my own running, and it's kind of formed the basis of how I run and want to continue forward.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: Um, and even continue the podcast forward, if you will.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: That said, that's been 10 lessons through the first 20 episodes of the People Run podcast.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Again, I want to thank you for those of you who have been listening, tuning in, commenting, leaving reviews, um, checking out the YouTube, following us on Instagram, to all the guests that have been on.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: Um, you guys rock.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: You guys are amazing.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: I'm happy to have had you on, and and I still talk to many of the people who have been on the show, and we're sharing tips and learning.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: Um, running a race in about a couple weeks with a few of them.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: I'm looking forward to meeting them in person.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: But thank you to those who have been on, those who are gonna be on going forward.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: Thank you to those who have listening or those who are gonna listen forward.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: Um, here's to the next few lessons that'll come from the next 20 plus episodes, you know.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: Um, we have some episodes in in the tank, if you will, that are coming.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: I'm excited to share those and share those stories um and share with you and have you guys engage with it.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: Uh, this is the People Run podcast through its first 20 episodes and 10 lessons from the first 20 episodes.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: As I love to say, but I first will say keep running out there having fun.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: Until next time.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: This has been the People Run podcast, y'all.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: Peace.
